🥺 hi. I get so anxious asking for requests. So I’m sorry if it’s weird. But could I please please Pleaseee get a ghost x fem reader. Hurt to comfort. They were on a mission and she’s there for medic help. Not even to fight. But she got taken by the bad guys. And she gets tortured for information that she doesn’t have. It wasn’t supposed to happen like this. It wasn’t supposed to happen at all, actually. It was just another mission, another day on the job. You went out with the boys as usual, their assigned medic as theyghost refused to work with anybody else. You weren’t sure why. Maybe it was your soft demeanor, your gentle touch, the way you never judged himthem for anything hethey did. But whatever it was, they liked you, and so with them you went.

You hung back at the evac point, also as usual. Sitting in the truck, first aid kit on your lap, a comm in your ear as you listened to your boys and made sure they were all okay. It was a tense fight, gunshots and pained grunting filling your headset. You were on edge, rocking back and forth as you listened for your que to come in. In fact, you were so focused on the comms that you didn’t even notice the danger you were in until it was too late.

Your first cue something was wrong was when the comms went silent. The sounds of battle filled your ears for hours before getting cut off abruptly. Your hand shot to the comm link, fiddling with it as you frantically tried to reconnect, worried something was wrong.

“Ghost, do you copy?”

“Ghost?”

“Price?”

“Gaz?”

“Can you hear me??” Your voice got more and more panicked as you got no response. You yanked the headset off and shrugged your vest on, kit in hand as you slid out of the truck.

Your second clue something was wrong was when you looked up to see the barrel of a gun pointed directly at your face. You didn't even have time to ask ‘what’ before everything went dark.

“Hello, princesa.” You blink hard as the blindfold is removed from your eyes. The light is blinding, the splitting headache you got from being pistol whipped only intensifying under the harsh lights.

“Who are you?” You manage after a moment, eyes slowly focusing on the man in front of you. He is large, easily over six foot, and built like an absolute unit. His face is covered by a black balaclava, though his scarred, tattooed forearms are on display.

“Don’t play stupid with me.” His voice is deep and smooth, and if you weren’t in the situation you are in you would have asked him to keep talking.

“‘M not! I don't-"

“Don’t lie to me Princesa. I don’t like liars.” A shiver runs down your spine as his tone darkens.

“But I’m-”

“Ah ah lovie, I am one asking questions here.”

“I wasn’t ask-”

“SHUT UP!” You flinch back at the drastic change in tone, the sound sending bolts of pain through your skull.

“Oh sorry Princesa, did that hurt?” Seriously, you are going to get whiplash from his bi-polar personality, “Forgot you have concussion. Let's get you Advil for that and then we see if you talk, yeah?"

You watch with blurry vision as he leaves the room, slamming the door shut behind him. The sound sends waves of agony through your pounding head, and by the time you can focus again he's back.

All it takes is one well placed blow to the head, an attempt to get you to pay attention, and you're out like a light.

“I don’t know anything I swear! Please! I don't know anything!” The sobs tear raggedly out of your throat, already raw from screaming. Your voice is scratchy and broken, but still you can't stop begging.

“I don’t know anything” You sob. Those words, I don’t know, had become your motto over the past few daysweeks(?)

“Oh Princesa. I know.” He croons, running a finger down your bruised face.

Time was meaningless. Has it been 2 days since you were captured? Two weeks? Months? You don’t know. Your meals come at staggered times, and your captors never come at a routine time. The lights turn on and off at staggered times, nothing in a set pattern, a system created to mess with your mind.

Not that you know that. This wasn’t the kind of life you lived. You were a medic for heaven's sake. Your hands had been built to mend, to fix, to heal. Not to clutch at broken bones, to scratch against cement, to be chained and broken. You arewere a gentle creature, not designed for this world of torture and terror.

"They no come for you." You moan as the words pound through your skull, nearly unintelligible.

"Wh'...y'say?" You mumble, voice scratchy and broken.

"You're friends, Princesa. They are no coming for you." He sighs and moves next you, prodding your side with his steel-toed boot, "You are replaceable, your skills are easily replicated, they no spend time and resources to find a simple medic."

"They…'ll c'me." You wheeze, refusing to belive that Price, that Gaz, that Soap, that Ghost, would just...leave you.

He laughs in response, digging his toe into your side until your gasping in pain.

"We shall see, Princesa. We shall see."

You weren’t built for this. Weren’t built to recognize the manipulation, the mind games. Weren’t built to survive the two-face man who was reshaping your brain. The man who was your greatest source of pain, but also your only friend. The man that flayed your flesh open, but soothed and bandaged you when it was all over. This man, who was slowly becoming the only thing you could trust in your unstable world. He may bring you unbearable pain, but he brought you comfort too.

"That looks bad, Princesa." The man lightly touches the bones sticking out of your forearm. You whine in pain, clutching it to your chest. He chuckles, wiping your blood off on the cell floor.

"Let's get that fixed up, yeah?" His voice is soft, and gentle, and the nicest thing you've heard in a loooong time. His touch is the same, gentle caresses of bruised and broken skin, revolting and appealing at the same time.

Oh, it's utter agony as he sets and stitches your arm with no pain killers. You scream, back arching, lungs heaving, body seizing.

But after? Oh it's heaven. He holds you, cradling you against his warm body, making sure you don't go into shock, telling you you're a good girl, and that you've made him proud. You hate yourself for it, but you can't help but preen at the praise.

He brings you a calendar. One month. It’s been one month since you got taken.

“It’s been over a month.” He says, a deep voice tinged with pity, “and no sign of your…friends. I’d give up being rescued if I were you, because they clearly have.” You can barely hear him as you stare at the paper in his hands, 31 days marked off with big, bright X’s. 31 days that you have been trapped here. 31 days that your squad…hadn’t come for you. Is he right? Are they really not coming? Did Ghost really give up on you? Are you-

“Ay Princesa, I even did what you asked. I sent your squad pictures and videos that even the greenest tech member could pull some coordinates from, but nothing. It’s like I said. Your ‘friends’ don’t care for you. They are not coming for you. I am your only friend in this place. Tell me, who bandages your wounds, who feeds you, who makes sure your living space is comfortable?”

“Y-you do.” You whisper uncertainty, “But…you also hurt me, don’t you?”

“Oh Princesa, I wouldn’t hurt ya if y’ would just listen. It not torture if you're disobedient. It's just…punishment.” His voice is sickeningly sweet, “And you just back-talked me. Do you remember what happens when you try to give me sass?”

"I get…punished." You mumble, cheeks flushing with shame.

"Obviously, you fucking idiot. I mean how."

"I…you…I have to do affirmations."

"Look at that, y'r gettin' it!"

"Say it again." He snarls. You sit in front of a mirror, face bruised, bleeding, and swollen.

He makes you keep going, repeating those 4 sentences until you literally can't make sound anymore, a fact he tests by seeing how much it takes to get you to scream. You pass out before he gets anywhere.

for all klowns -they speak their own language but can fully understand and speak in english! i also like to think they usually learn & become fluent in multiple, and not just earth languages either -have the capability to mimic & replicate voices and sounds almost perfectly. kinda like crows or something -sexual reproduction is rather obsolete, never existed (asexual reproduction of some kind or artificial reproduction, considering the slim scene)?, or the popcorn seeds ARE eggs. i guess they're like frogs... ((it's also interesting that popcorn is used so casually rather in attack or just dropped around randomly. implicative that klowns are disposable OR that popcorn klowns aren't actually *klown babies* but rather another species)) ---> (i actually used to have a klown oc who lived on earth after being sprinkled into the dumpster by jumbo, as a little popcorn)

anyways time for klown specifics

jumbo -7'0" -generally pretty quiet and self kept. not out of shyness but of just self preference and choice -very very intelligent, coordinated, and in a way controlling. he's very meticulous and never really makes mistakes; everything is intentional -seen as a leader but whether that's an actual role he holds is debatable. i don't know if they need a hierarchy of leadership -sadistic (though not as much as slim imo) and genuinely likes to kill for fun. carries a looming sense of eerieness and an unwavering gaze that makes him seem even more intimidating

slim -6'9" -prideful & narcissistic. generally a bit of a showoff who boasts a LOT, usually trying to do his job as efficiently and effortlessly as possible -extremely controlling and aggressive. refuses to share any bit of power and control he can maintain with any other, and very often degrades and puts down others to have his way. also he's just generally kinda physically aggressive, like the car scene -deeply sadistic and looooves killing for fun, as well as the thrill of breaking rules & using force when he can; very easily gets caught up in the moment of fun. laughs and giggles a lot -enjoys being praised but tends to become overwhelmed when complimented by mass groups or when given in private by another. fluster-able

spike (i know everyone else says he's an incel but he is my precious baby girl) -6'5" -easily excited and has much higher energy than others. very friendly, upbeat, and a little bit oblivious -very playful and fun-loving (he literally squeals "whoo!" when he goes down the firefighter pole im in tears), as well as highly optimistic. he often tries to see the good in things and others; doesn't really process/recognize passive aggressiveness or even direct insults -doesn't often experience more negative/conflicting emotions but generally attempts to suppress them. is also very protective when it comes to those he cares for; however, very easily trusting anyways -moderately intelligent but comes off as less so due to naivety

rudy -6'5" -super low energy, as well as generally neutral and passive. would probably be a centralist unfortunately. goes with the flow for the most part and is pretty indifferent to everything -follows the rules religiously and has a deep fear of being punished. is a little bit cowardly and generally refuses to speak up for himself or his beliefs (i imagine he might be a little more confident in case of someone he cares about bit it's situational) -struggles with physical expression, and generally goes from a neutral (even depressed looking lol) look to being able to actually smile. often looks exhausted or uncomfortable -easily distracted tbh. will literally forget what he's supposed to be doing and become hyper focused on another mundane activity

shorty -5'0" -super chill and relaxed. doesn't really have complex emotions and is overall pretty simple; though, this does not mean he's stupid -no fears of authority or generally negative emotions of the sort. doesn't mind doing anything else other than his job. again, super carefree and relaxed -despite this more carefree nature of his he also does have some more immature and childish habits and behaviors. likes to play and mess around a lot, and may often seem and act innocent -will sometimes try and interact with humans beyond his job purposes for fun and or curiosity. might leave you alive if he's feeling a bit funny

Tiny details and shit that others wouldn't have noticed. Hes still an idiot tho godbless GKEHSJ. Hes the number one mad gear fanboy. Hes good w explosives but crap with other tech.

MY SWEET BOYYYYY (i say abt a 25 year old man), deon is definitely the softest oc i have so far, he is the second in command, later the leader, of my first community in state of decay 2, the fragments! he took over the position after his best friend (and crush) max's mental health started to decline as a result of stuff he had to do as warlord (a subclass of hero in sod2) :( he is a very kind hearted man, always wanting what is best for the settlement and as a trader hero, he established a trading outpost at their homebase allowing for traders from around the region to come and trade! he also looooves animals and specialized in pathology to help create more plague samples and became one of the settlement's main medics! he is a very busy man but he doesn't care what is thrown his way, as long as it means that the settlement and the valley is safe!!

it comes as no surprise as someone who was once embroiled in arasaka's innerworkings and coming from a family who was thoroughly involved in arasaka business would be standoffish but after being backstabbed by a higher up in a botched assassination attempt on another higher up and having everything she had worked so hard to earn taken away in the blink of an eye, it's no wonder that venus is the way she is :/ but don't let her steely expression and sharp words get to you too much, once you crack through her touch outer shell, you will find a woman who wants nothing more than to be loved and trusted :/ she rly does have a heart of gold tho, she kept it quietly but when she was still employed at arasaka, a small chunk of her paycheck went towards a school for inner city kids to help fund their educations and provide teachers with supplies 💗

I'm literally itching to get this semester over with so I can be free again. I just need to get to the start of july 😭😭😭 I have so many things I want to read and even a lot of ideas for very specific fic rec lists because I love doing those a lot.

Fun fact, when I made my first ever fic rec list, you commented about how I did well with it and it just made me so happy because it really took me a while to put it together and I overthought it a million times. That's also what made me decide to reread cmi and properly review it too and now we're here 🥺🥺🥺

Also about your question whether we picture ourselves as the reader while reading fanfic! I actually never do. I feel like if I did, I'd just always keep thinking 'I'd never do/say that' and get annoyed lmao. Every main character in a fic is an OC to me and they all have their distinct looks in my head based on their distinct personalities.

Also also, you talking about cmi14 has me feeling so emotional. I literally can't imagine a time when that story has ended so I'm always happy to hear that we still have a while to go. EYYYYMOSTER HIGH IS BACK WITCHESSokay adult enby obcessed with dolls cringe ahead.I am so excited for the return, I LOOOOVE figures and dolls, especially ones centered around monsters and myths, so monster high reels me in like a sucker.I really dont draw many teens, but seeing the new box art for the dolls looking more teenage than mid twenties is actually kinda nice! I like a lot of the changes, Clawdeen, whos just always pretty much the best main character in previous gens, now she's more centeral and main character I'm sooo excited! This design is kinda a combination of her box art and doll art for the new series I love that she has glasses and freckles, and just the cutest little outfit, I did forego the chain on her belt and adding details to her belt but IDC i think ti looks fine without, it was too much for me with the pattern around it, needed to have a diffrent texture between her clothes and belt.Tried to draw her with a more teen body than I typically draw (<5% of my ocs are under 20.) and I'm pretty okay with it, I think maybe her face looks a little aged tho? lacking baby fat? IDK but I'm mostly happy with her, she's just sooo cute. If you're into MH lemme know what your fave character or doll is!! I missed a bunch and I love hearing people talk about things I like that they enjoy. :lmao: (Don't be creepy about lil clawdeen, she is a child.)

How have I never drawn my original bunny waifu in a bunny suit?I asked myself this while browsing my galley so picked her for my first Bunny Suit Art Jam 2022 held by @atomictiki (RIP his tumblr lol)  It's Peridot, the best design and most fun character in Puchi Carat according to me. I tried to mix in some of her original art style in making it a little more anime in the eyes and the white highlight is based directly on how they draw highlights in her official art. Anyway, I quite like this one! Hope I manage to get a couple more done for the month, but I'm taking a short holiday soon so that may interrupt that plan! I'll see what happens.

Okay I got another idea for Bunny suit jam by atomictiki, a character who's been drawn in one a few times, has a figure of her in one too, but I wanted to do some sorta classic anime vibes.

One of my earliest childhood crushes I rememebr is Ryoko Hakubi, I never got far in the anime but she really grabbed my heart with a vice like grip, I love her english dub voice too, that kinda deeper sarcastic sound? love it, it's actually what inspired me to draw Ryoko, the fact that Eda has a simailir voice, caused me to remember my love for Ryoko.

I love whumpblr as a community - by this I mean the people in it, and not necessarily just the content. Everyone is incredibly kind and supportive of each other, and the fact that we all share a pretty specific set of interests with one another makes us feel like family. What I have to say about not liking whumpblr is not based at all on the community or people itself, but the content or aspects of content that I personally don't enjoy. With that disclaimer out of the way, I can't stand when characters are labelled whumpee, whumper, and caretaker. Lmao this is probably the biggest pet peeve that gets aggravated on the daily. I like characters, and to me, whump isn't very special when enacted on random cardboard cutouts of stand-ins that just illustrate the scenarios. I can't enjoy whump if there's no personalities involved. So I go for the committed storylines with named, fleshed-out characters, because that's what makes the whump actually hit. I just don't understand the appeal (past the initial story prompt for those writing whump who want to find scenarios to use) of a personality/gender/backstory stripped scene with stand-ins we don't care about getting beat up.

It just takes away the entirety of the impact. I could read about the absolute worst torture happening to "whumpee" and just not feel a thing, but give me the same scenario happening to either a character I know from media (in fanfiction) or an OC of the author's that I've come to learn about and love, suddenly everything means 200x more. And you can make use of such subtle horrors (I'm big on subtlety, which is another reason I hate the use of the literal roles being the names given to the 'characters' lmao xD) when it's a fleshed-out human.

But that's just me! Plenty of people seem to love it, or else they find other uses for it and push aside whatever qualms they have with the non-character approach. There are also some posters who do put personalities into their whumpee and whumper, but like...what is the POINT of naming them like that if you're going to treat them like a character?

Anyways. xD There are plenty of other things I don't like about whumpblr because I am a very picky person, but that's the biggest thing, and I don't want to gripe and complain about everything that gets on my nerves about it. Besides, I can overlook anything I don't like just for the simple fact of everyone being SO kind in the community. I don't care what you write if you're just a great person behind the scenes. Never stop. Enjoy yourself. Draw your crowd. I think it's wonderful that people share and get supported, even if I don't personally enjoy or understand the appeal. :)

Oooh! This one highly depends, because though there are certain tropes and/or whump actions that I enjoy, some are incredibly tough to write and others are ones I'd only read about, and would never try writing myself because I don't think I'd be good at it. More than that, there are also ones that I fall to all the time because I can't get enough of writing it, and it's a main coping mechanism for me.

To break all these down, I'll start with my top favorite, which is whipping. I find it frustrating as hell to write whipping scenes, but goddamn I eat them up in media, whether movies, books, or Tumblr posts. I mean it's also my top BDSM kink along with rigging, so it relates most to that. Plus the SOUNDS? *Pounds table*

I wish more whump included spanking/belting, because that's usually seen as a sexualized action, but I'd like to see it performed non-sexually as just a humiliation tactic. I loooove belting. But it's also another frustrating thing to write, so I can't provide my own version of it with much motivation.

A trope that draws me in rather...violently and unexpectedly is the "rescued whumpee" trope. So a "pet" character who was previously abused coming to a new owner, expecting mistreatment and being met with a kind, caring master instead. This is perhaps the most magnetic one to me, and whenever there are scenes where the whumpee gets scared into panic attacks by either the owner losing their cool or accidentally bringing up a traumatic memory, BRO I FUCKING DIE. Whumperflies go off the charts. And in general I love the pet whump and how it differs from the sexualized BDSM play of the same style, because it offers the slavery fix and the owner/obedient submissive dynamic that I love while staying away from things that I don't quite love about pet play (the animalization part LOL, which is not sexualized in pet whump and feels more comfortable to me as a dynamic).

I find myself writing this sort of trope more or less, especially with the trajectory of Dancing With Death and the third party (Emery) witnessing the abuse of the pet character (Angel) while also trying to find a way to eventually rescue or at the very least offer comfort and protection. My favorite is the abuse continuing and the third party only being able to offer background help. You get the constant hurt/comfort that way.

I again don't want this to be too long so xD I will end it with my absolute favorite trope to write, which is the kidnapper/kidnapped trope. My pet way of writing it though is to explore first the abuse, the psychological manipulation, and then the eventual breakdown of both parties, which is the key element to me. I like a kidnapper who is secretly insecure and needy/lonely, and a kidnappee who slowly finds the ways to get to the kidnapper's depth, whether meaning to or not. But if you've read my Sinner fanfic, you'd already know that. ;D

I enjoyed answering these! Sometimes it's just nice knowing there's at least one person who wants you to spill the beans about your personal opinions, and to be able to unload without hating yourself for it. So thank you, anon! <3

I think the reason why it’s more visible on Jungkook’s side for now is because Jungkook is making a very conscious effort to go against his knee-jerk reaction of distrusting OC. His walls ARE breaking down because he’s realized that under everything else, she cares about him. OC’s going much slower because this is just so completely new to her. Trust?? In this industry?? But she’ll come around eventually. You’re completely right though, Jungkook is the one who’s taking the first steps here!

Ahah that’s funny, I come from a fandom where one of the characters only calls his love interest by her name when he starts getting closer to her, so that’s a device I’ve grown very fond of and I’m shamelessly reusing that in here. So there is a brief passage that talks about Jungkook’s perspective in the Interlude:

“Worried about your safety, Jung— Mr. Jeon.” You sound almost annoyed, and normally he’d mark that as a small victory, but he doesn’t miss your slip up. He can’t. It makes him tense, and he has to wonder if it’s because you think less of him tonight. He’s sure — he’s convinced — that you would never, not in a million years, have made that mistake with Mr. X.

But the truth is, Jungkook’s conflicted about it. In the beginning, he suspects it's disrespectful because OC called him Jungkook when she was his handler and he thinks it means she still sees him like that. As time goes on though, he starts to think that the real 'OC' is not the cold, calculating appearance and that when she calls him by his name it’s when she lets the genuine 'OC' surface and shows that she cares. In the chapter before this one, he kinda realizes how hard it is for her to do that and how much she has to fight herself to let it happen. In this chapter, that’s why he changes his mind when she says his name, he realizes it must mean something’s gone very wrong.

My lips are sealed about Anna but like, from a story perspective it would really disappointing if I dropped that plot thread, right? Surely I wouldn’t leave everyone hanging like that right? 👀

"(Y/N), the funny thing is to try clothes on, not the buying part." He rolls his eyes as if it were evident, and Jimin nods silently with a smile. The two of them have been adamant about coming with you for your shopping day, and it has been taking way too long for your liking. It's not like you hate shopping per se, but you always struggle to find something to your taste and to your size. So shopping has always been more frustrating than anything else.

"I'm here to buy clothes, Tae. Not try some ridiculously expensive clothes on and leave with nothing-"

"Come on baby, live a little, it's not going to kill you to try out an outfit with us!" Jimin is pushing you from behind, while Taehyung takes your hands and drags you in the store with him. You huff in annoyance, but comply anyway.

You never go into those kinds of stores: you feel out of place and definitely uncomfortable under the eyes of some people who do not hesitate to throw some dirty glares to the three of you. They know you are definitely not the kind of people who should enter this shop, but here you are anyway.

Way to make you feel uncomfortable.

Yet, Taehyung and Jimin seem oblivious as they pick clothes for each other and for yourself while you sigh, fully aware that they will not give you a choice, especially not when they usher you into one fitting room and throw clothes at you.

You smile nonetheless because both of them surround you in the two other fitting rooms; you can hear them giggle quietly even if they take their fitting session very seriously. Poking your head out to see if they were done as you were prepared, you catch Taehyung’s eyes while you both wait for Jimin to be done.

“Jiminie, loooove, are you soon done?” Taehyung and patients are usually a good mix, but today his camera is ready to picture the moment with his two mates and he cannot wait to send it to everyone else (maybe he can even add it to his Instagram page? It’s been a while since he uploaded anything).

“I’m here, I’m here,” Jimin comes out with a smirk; he knows damn well that he’s rocking his outfit. You cannot help but stare for a second while Taehyung gets ready to take his picture.

“Come closer, I need a pretty one for Instagram and another one for the group chat. I need to flex my gorgeous soulmates.” You chuckle soundlessly, even if you catch one of the employee gawking at you with a glare. You try to ignore her and Jimin kisses your cheek for the first picture, successfully distracting you from the woman.

“O-Kay, this is definitely not for Instagram.” Taehyung snorts as he watches the picture before he goes back into place. He motions for you to smile and you see his features mirroring yours.

Behind his camera, Taehyung does not try to conceal his amusement as he takes the second picture. He knows that the woman who is glaring at the three of you is more likely to ask you to stop or to come and ask you what you are actually doing, but should he really care when he takes one of the prettiest shot he ever got?

mason twirled an unlit cigarette between his fingers, his other hand shoved deep in his pocket, fingers wrapped around his lighter. he didn’t even have the urge to smoke anymore, which was odd, because he still felt everything around him a little too much. he didn’t understand why it was so easy to quit but chalked it up to wanting to treat the detective with respect as a member of the team.

it didn’t occur to him until after brooks had walked out of the bakery that there might be more to it. that maybe it wasn’t just about respect or trying to get into her pants. he wasn’t sure what else there could be – it’s not like they had done anything physically that would be enough to replace his coping mechanism.

now when he felt the urge to smoke, he saw her face instead. heard her voice telling him that the smoke would eventually kill her. pictured that gentle, hopeful look on her face accentuated by a soft smile. saw her sitting behind her desk, head tilted and resting on her hand while pointing to the “no smoking” sign in her office with the other.

even though everything seemed normal on the outside, mason could sense something had changed for them both. brooklyn had withdrawn into herself, avoiding holding his gaze beyond a passing glance, and ignoring his suggestive remarks when they were alone. it created an unfamiliar ache in his chest, to the point where he wasn’t enjoying flirting with her as much. it was a odd sense of discomfort to feel, seeing as how he was no stranger to uncomfortable sensations.

at least ava and nat had the decency to play along as though nothing was amiss, even though every once in a while, nat would throw a worried glance their way. felix, however, had no such qualms about pointing out the obvious awkwardness between them.

“so… brooklyn, you haven’t hung out with us in a while outside of these meetings,” felix said with a grin that mason was starting to really hate. he let out a low growl, which felix pointedly ignored. “and i know mason would loooove your company. he just broods in the dark when you’re not here.”

brooklyn had to suppress the chuckle that wanted to emerge at the image of mason hiding in a corner of the room and arched one of her eyebrows at felix instead. “i don’t see how his brooding has anything to do with me.”

“because the man is clearly –”

“felix!” nat’s exasperated tone cut him off before he could finish his sentence, but the knowing look in his eyes and sympathetic smile made brooklyn’s heart thud a little louder than usual.

“um, i guess it has been a while since we’ve done something not work-related. why don’t we watch a movie or something?” she suggested, trying to divert everyone’s attention away from whatever it was that felix was about to say.

“yes! you pick the movie and i’ll get the popcorn and we’ll watch it right here!” felix’s eyes shined with excitement and brooklyn couldn’t help but chuckle.

and that’s how mason found himself watching pride and prejudice in the warehouse living room later that week.

brooklyn wiped a stray tear from her eye as mason leaned toward her. “seriously? this makes you cry?” he was genuinely sort of surprised. brooklyn could be just as, if not more, stoic than rebecca and he found her difficult to read sometimes, especially if she refused to make eye contact with him and if her body didn’t react to his advances.

“he’s got too much pride, she has too much prejudice. he says he’s not good with words, so he shows her how much he loves her by overcoming the issues his pride caused and when she finally sees all that he does and understands his true nature, of course she falls in love with him. it just works, okay!” brooklyn sniffled, putting a hand on her heart. “it’s one of my favorite movies.”

“mine too! i mean, it is now anyway,” felix said, wrapping his arm around her shoulders. “are you going to stay tonight, brooks?”

brooklyn covered her mouth to stifle her yawn. “i shouldn’t. i have to be up early tomorrow and i didn’t bring my car since it was so nice out.”

nat frowned. “it’s dark, one of us should—”

“i’ll walk you home,” mason interrupted, standing from where he had been sitting on the armrest of the couch during the entire movie.

brooklyn hesitated. it had been easy to forget what happened at the bakery and pretend as though nothing was wrong when she avoided being alone with mason. but she also didn’t want to draw attention to the fact that she was avoiding him, even though she knew the team had probably figured it out and were just being nice about it.

she looked up at the expectant looks from the others and realized she had fallen silent. “oh, um, alright, i’ll see you all tomorrow,” she said quickly, picking up her purse and following mason out.

“i really wish those two would work things out,” felix said softly once the door had closed.

“i’m sure they will. brooklyn’s just going to have to be a little patient with him while he figures things out,” nat said, picking up the first edition pride and prejudice book she decided to read while everyone else watched the movie.

the walk back to brooklyn’s apartment was quiet but to her surprise, not wholly unpleasant. for the first time in a while, her chest wasn’t constricting from actively trying to suppress her feelings and reactions around mason. for some reason, they were able to walk side-by-side, his warm presence washing over her and easing whatever tension she had been holding that day and letting her body relax.

by the time they made it back to her apartment, her arms swayed casually at her sides and she smiled contentedly to herself. she hoped they could end the night on a high note and moved to unlock her door.

“hey, brooklyn.”

she tensed before looking up at mason, one hand holding her keys near the doorknob. he was leaning against the wall, hands tucked deep into his pockets.

“yes?”

he looked at her with something brooklyn hadn’t ever seen before swirling in his grey eyes. his mouth opened and then closed as if he wasn’t sure what he wanted to say before frowning and looking away.

she tilted her head sideways. “isn’t this where you make some suggestive comment to try to get into my pants?”

mason’s head snapped back to look at her so fast she almost missed it. “think that's all i’m good for, huh, sweetheart? did it ever occur to you that i might not be in the mood?”

“okay…” she squinted at him in confusion. “wait, why are you upset?”

brooklyn’s heart was beating so fast she thought it would leap out of her chest. she swallowed thickly and willed her body to calm down so she could avoid being disappointed by mason yet again. “i’m not a game for someone to just have fun with for a time and throw away when they start getting bored. i want someone to think i’m worth waiting for,” she said, afraid to say it any louder than a whisper even though she knew mason would hear her anyway.

“oh sweetheart, i wouldn’t be here right now if i didn’t think you’d be worth it,” mason said, his eyes full of sincerity and a gentle smile that caught her off guard. she was so used to his flirty remarks being accompanied by a smirk that the absence of it was almost dizzying.

brooklyn frowned in confusion. her brain was used to making sense of things logically and she had barely had a full conversation with mason since that moment in the bakery when she felt something more between them, something deeper, swirling underneath the tension. it was dangerous to let herself hope, but maybe, just maybe, he felt it too.

“i know what you want and as soon as you get it, you’ll be done with me. well, i’m not interested in playing your game, mason, so feel free to find someone else,” she said, the quiver in her voice contradicting the gravity of her words as she opened the door to her apartment and stepped inside.

mason’s hand shot out to keep the door open and brooklyn looked up at him, eyes widening slightly in surprise.

“i could never be done with you,” he said softly. there was no hint of snark or teasing in his voice.

he stepped into the doorway, casting a shadow over her small frame even in the dark of the apartment.

“what do you want, mason?” she asked, something akin to hope starting to bloom in her chest.

mason gently stroked her cheek with his thumb, pausing briefly at the corner of her lips. “you,” he answered with such confidence and honesty that brooklyn knew she believed him wholeheartedly.

he slowly lowered his forehead to hers. “just you. we don’t have to do anything physical. i just can’t help but want to be near you all the time. that damn movie’s in my head now.”

she looked up at him shyly through her eyelashes and smiled, walked backwards into the apartment so he could close the door behind him. even in the dark, mason could see the vibrant blush on her cheeks that was slowly becoming his favorite feature of hers.

“that’s all i wanted to know. does this mean i should expect an impromptu confession in the rain?” she teased, moving to turn on the light and make herself comfortable on the couch.
