THE BIG QSMPSTUCK LOREDUMP AKA: I finally get to do all the lorebabble I wanted to do.

EDIT (11/1/2023): THIS VERSION IS NOW OUT OF DATE AND DOES NOT INCLUDE THE PEOPLE IN THE ICE CUBES. I AM CURRENTLY REWORKING PARTS OF THIS BUT MOST SHOULD STAY THE SAME FOR THE NEW POSTS SANS BAGHERA, KAMETO, AND DANTDM'S CLASSPECTS! LOOK FORWARD TO UPDATED POSTS IN THE FUTURE.

SOME NOTES: 1. I have a very specific version of qsmpstuck going on with my art I make that I made with a group of friends (thanks Slimercord!) 2. There are other people who made other classpects and takes on QSMP characters that are more character based, mine is not that case, it looks at how QSMP as a whole would work as a full sburb session, and balancing how many people would be on each aspect or class to carry that motif of Homestuck's balancing/equal duality theme. This means I am looking at and using Classpects as a narrative & plot device, not necessarily a personality test like how someone would classpect a real person (This is how the Extended Zodiac works, and why I choose to ignore it for character classpecting. It works great for classpecting real life people though, so by all means you can use the EZ for you and your friends!). 3. AND WITH THAT! It means two people per aspect and and class, with the exception of space and time having three people, and knights and heirs having three people. 4. FAIR WARNING: IF YOU HAVE NEVER READ HOMESTUCK, THERE IS LOTS OF DEATH IN IT, WITH LOTS OF RESURRECTIONS. I WILL BE DISCUSSING DEATH IN A VERY JOKING MANNER HERE! 5. For posterity in case things change in the future: This post was made August 2nd 2023, after the French were added, and right before the Election arc finished. I'm sure if I came back to this after QSMP is over my classpecting would be different. (Updated August 20, 2023)

HERE WE GO! The big ol google doc sheet I had to make for this. Every note on that godtier order list is how we decided the character would godtier, and we still aren't even technically done! I have so much information built up for this AU I am not sure I could include all of it in this post.

CLASSPECTS

Anyway, in terms of classpects, the way we went about deciding was 1. Finding symbolic meanings we felt fit the characters best 2. If the classpect was funny and had a fun double entendre to the character 3. If we really struggled, we went and picked up Dahni Witch of Light's classpect analyses and found which class fit a character best within an aspect we had a vague idea of. I find Dahni's analyses to be the best at classpecting non-homestuck characters with, because they give enough leeway in interpretation and are somewhat broad, while still applying as a fictional character's story arc, rather than solely a personality test. We also basically ignored most classpect's assigned "role" concept thingy, they were too nebulous in meaning to help much, with the only ones we kept being Sylphs are the passive creation class with Maids as the active creation class, and then Bards are passive destruction, Princes are active destruction.

AND NOW BACK TO THE CUBES YOU CARE ABOUT: As stated before, we did lay it out so we (mostly) only had two per aspect and class, to get that true fan session balancing spirit. Space/time and knight/heir are the only ones with three members. Here's how the outfits look!

My favorites here & their reasonings are: - Etoiles: Sylph of Blood - We all agreed him getting a classpect that is at least somewhat silly would be fitting, but all immediately came to the conclusion that he would hands down be a blood player. From his love of fighting, and the way he goes about befriending everyone he meets to help them, he's just so blood player. To balance out our initial silly classpecting idea, we made him a Sylph! It fits, like, really well! He creates friendship, he helps people, like. What more could you want from a classpect for him. - Mariana: Maid of Doom - I sent these two asks to this other person about this and liked their reasonings lol. - Spreen: Prince of Breath - Look I'm a Spreengirl I think he would play a great active destruction class and he takes away other's freedom (in minecraft). He kills people. He's just so Prince to me. It's really funny. - BBH: Knight of Life - Do you know how funny it is to take a guy who's whole thing is that he's like entirely black and red themed and put him in the burlap sack outfit. Also Knight & Space player frog breeding combo. He's working with Foolish on those frogs. - Foolish: Page of Space - This guy is the ultimate builder of all time ever. He was hands down the easiest to look at and go Oh he is THE space player here. - Fit: Prince of Space - Y'know 2b2t and hacked clients and griefing people? Prince of Space. Plus since he's a space player, soooo - Philza: Knight of Rage - Another great Space & Knight combo. This guy is such a hater on QSMP (positive) he doubts easily distrusts whenever necessary. Such a rage player. - Missa: Bard of Time - Missa is really failgirl I know quite a few people haven't like... watched much of his MC stuff. However you should check out when he had to be placed in a box to fish by himself so he wouldn't die a third time in Minecraft Extremo. He's a perfect Bard, and then he does music. Great set up for a Time player. Wouldn't want it any other way. - Antoine: Seer of Void - truly. Truly. A guy I looked at for two minutes and immediately knew what classpect he needed. That scene where he just like lightly questioned Cellbit after he escaped the federation and it made Cellbit so nervous he started just saying things that made him look way more nervous than necessary? Core Antoine moment for me. The fact he has a basement filled with so much writing on every candidate? The fact he hides his true face so much? We don't even know what's going on there? Void Player. Seer. So fitting it's beautiful to me. - Felps: Maid of Breath - Look, breath is THE aspect of freedom and doing what you want at your own pace. I think I would be committing a cardinal sin if I DIDN'T make Felps a breath player. - Tazercraft: Witch of Doom & Page of Time - They get to do a fucked up glitch timeloop. With these two classpects they can literally do whatever they want forever. Witch of Doom is a classpect that you give to a character if you know they can rip everything to shreds, have fun doing it, but wouldn't (usually) use it to actively hurt people out of true malice (for no reason) (a witch can DEFINITELY respond negatively if push comes to shove). Page of Time is so funny as a classpect also. Just like... Look up what the Page godtier outfit looks like. You'll see what I mean... And why Pac is a page. - Rubius: Waste of Breath - This classpect sounds really mean, sorry. I promise I like Rubius. He's supposed to be a stand in for what the Hussie author insert was in Homestuck, opposing Doc Scratch and fighting him. Hussie was a Waste of Space, I wanted to keep the pun with waste here. Breath worked the best. The federation has a Lord of Blood ability to counter him. Neither of these two count for the main classpect total.

One day I might post a copy of the google sheet and link it for more in-depth reasonings for every character, but like... almost everyone had reasonings like this where we spent waaay too long analyzing everyone LMAO. This is getting long as is, so I'll cut off classpecting here.

DREAMING MOONS

I am about to say something that will make people either really mad or really happy. There is no canon true definition of what assigns you a dreaming moon in Homestuck's text. The only thing we can glean from canon about which moon you get is that Prospit humans make their bed in the morning, and Derse humans don't. Needless to say, this doesn't help when you want to individually give each person a dreaming moon, but it IS great news for me: it makes assigning dreaming moons based on dividing the cast in half really, really easy. That is how it worked for the troll session, it was cut in half with teams, and then assigned based on red team vs blue team. So that is what I did here. All of the English speakers were given Prospit, and all of the Hispanic side were given Derse. This has lore relevance. We'll get back to it in a moment.

Also for note, the Federation is Prospit, with Dersite carapacians being a more nebulous identity against the Federation. Hispanic side was given Derse because they just seem more like Derse guys. Plus the whole Time on Derse/Space on Prospit theme going on in original HS canon is something I kinda wanted to go along with.

Quackity was given dual dreamer, with one of his dreamselves being ElQuackity, hence why he isn't listed. To balance this, we had to make another dual dreamer, and figured handing it to Kameto, who basically is permanently lost in the void, would be a good balance.

The French and Brazilian sessions were assigned using the "well this character would make sense here" method.

Server/Client Orders & Session Chains

If anyone needs a brief refresher, a client is the person you get into a sburb session, and a server is the person gets you into the session. Everyone is a client and a server to someone different. (tl;dr John was Rose's client, Rose was John's Server.) THAT BEING SAID! It means the loop for sessions close once you're all connected to both a client and a server. There are three separate sessions here, and one of them is a mobius double reacharound.

For clarity, the arrows mean: Client <- Server

The Original session, the mobius double reacharound, is the Spanish-English session. The order is

Quackity <- Mariana <- Spreen <- Roier <- Missa <- Vegetta <- Maxo <- Luzu (<- BBH)

BBH <- Foolish <- Slimecicle <- Jaiden <- DanTDM <- Fit <- Philza <- Wilbur (<- Quackity)

Because of the nature of a Mobius Double Reacharound, it means BBH and Quackity enter the session first, by technicality. The first person in a session is also the person who does the ectobiology. Unlike the troll session which only had Karkat as the ectobiologist, if Q!Quackity were the sole ectobiologist, no clones would be made and everyone would be stuck in a paradox, so I think it's funnier if BBH and Q had to work together on Ectobiology. I find their dynamic hilarious. Anyway, Luzu and Wilbur had to be the last in their respective chains, because no one else would be able to enter.

The next chain is the Brazilian closed Session, which is

Forever <- Mike <- Pac <- Felps <- Cellbit (<- Forever)

As previously mentioned, Pac e Mike (uou uou) have very good classpects to make up for the fact they have no space player. I'll come back to this.

The final chain is the French closed session. It goes

Baghera <- Antoine <- Etoiles <- AyPierre <- Kameto (<- Baghera)

They have balanced moons! They have a space player! They have a seer even! Both light and void! However, in missing a time player, they are forever doomed to fail the session.

LANDS OF PLANETS AND PARTNERS

Now I can finally explain actual lore. My apologies for making you read about 1000 words before this.

The Hispanic-English session is glitched. There is not a planet for each person. They have to share planets with a person from the opposite dreaming moon, generating lands that are a combination of two different aspects entirely. The planetary pairings for this prime session are the same pairings used for the initial egg pairings.

I really love designing lands for Sburb AUs it's my favorite thing in the world. The first one is the Land of Acid and Alcohol, Slimecicle (Heir of Heart) and Mariana's (Maid of Doom) land. Its oceans are acid and gasoline, and then covered in bottles that are a Russian roulette of alcoholic beverages, and then Molotov cocktails! The second is the Land of Steam and Dreams, Roier (Witch of Blood) and Jaiden's (Seer of Hope) land. It's filled with buildings built in an industrial revolution style architecture, playing on how people could believe in social mobility and "making it" in that time period, while also being reliant on heavy metallic machinery! I have a lot of fun conceptualizing lands.

The session's glitches don't stop at the planetary pairings on their own however, and it continues when Luzu attempts to enter the session. The session glitches from him being BBH's client, where it refuses to match pairings if they're connected directly, as the game would be unable to generate the gates above each player's house, it would simply loop back to connecting with the same Land. Luzu ends up being paired onto Quackity's land because of this, because the Game still detects him as having a dreamself on the opposite moon, even if he technically has both.

This causes BBH and Wilbur's land to glitch, and they end up paired together (as a bit of a nod back to how BBH and Wilbur were initially intended to be paired, before admins just made a new egg for Wilbur). We'll get back to this in a bit.

Some other lands from the AH session I enjoy are - The Land of Lush Forests and Iridescent Lakes, also known as LOLFAIL, BBH and Wilbur's land, which is a double Life player land, so the oceans are filled with gemstones and the land is covered in the most dense forest imaginable. It has the most difficult underlings spawn on it compared to any other land in the Anglo-Hispanic session. - The Land of Frogs and Typhoons, Spreen and Fit's land, which every space player is guaranteed frogs as part of their land, combined with Spreen being a breath player, it is a constant hurricane with frogs in it. They do not work on trying to calm the storm. They just start killing the frogs. There are so many frogs. The frogs are constantly flying at anyone who enters the land. Fit's slogan is FTF. Thank you to crow qsmp-yaoi for saying this idea because it truly brings me to tears every time I think about them being hit by those frogs flying at Mach 10. - The Land of Synapses and Static, Maxo and DanTDM's land. It's a darkened land, caused by Maxo's void, and then covered in a blanket of constant fog so thick a lighthouse can barely cut through it. The land also has mimicking noises to make familiar sounds to any player that steps on it, caused by Dan's Mind. It is an overbearingly lonely land. One where you understand what it truly feels like to be alone. One where you can lose someone as soon as you take your eyes off of them. Maxo last saw Dan on this land. No one else has seen him since.

I'm going to stop myself here, but I might come back and draw some more Land illustrations for these, haha.

Denizeggs

With the planetary partners, you might have seen this coming. Each planet in the combined session is missing a Denizen. Instead, what each player finds at the heart of the land is a little egg they need to help raise. They all find eggs at different points, however. Some people find their egg before they godtier, some find them afterward.

All of the eggs correspond to the land of their respective parents, however Luzu joins into the session too late to ever meet Tilin, second to last of the chain, she's already dead by that point.

And then the final major glitch in starting this session, when Wilbur joins as the final member of the chain, and enters, the only land open is BBH's land. Due to the nature of Sburb already knowing how things would end, it was always going to be this way, and there was no other option on who's planet he would join. The game glitches again, and detecting a second Prospit player, spawns in a new Denizen: Tallulah.

The eggs generally follow how they were in QSMP proper. Some of them die early. Some of them don't. Juanaflippa is as tragic as she is in canon. Two dads who are just bad at raising a child and it would have never worked out. Slime still kills Tilin by accident. Spreen doesn't care about Ramon, ditched him etc you know how it goes. The eggs are partially a planet quest too, so it's best if the eggs do live here.

Also in the glitches with this, there's a lack of consorts on any of the combined planets. There are a few, but not really as common as canon proper would have.

BRAZIL! 🇧🇷

The Brazil Session is a closed session between the five Brazilians. One of the requirements to complete Sburb is that you need a Space player (required to have forge in order to complete the final genesis frog & launch it into creating a new universe) and a Time player (required to keep the session in the proper timeline). The Brazilians have a time player (Pac), so they're halfway there!

There's some hiccups along the way. Mostly just Cellbit accidentally killing Felps and having to sprite him so Mike could make him a robot body to live in, but same old same old etc. Pac and Mike also kill each other by accident, but some other stuff happens there.

They still don't have the main aspect to actually continue the session, realize this, and also have a guy with one of the most conceptually powerful classpects to exist in terms of being able to glitch a game and save everyone. They manage to contact the primary session, reaching out to two grieving parents who are desperate to do anything to revive their daughter, one of whom is also a very powerful Doom player.

Brazilian Lands (brief edition)! - Land of Vultures and Culture, Forever's land, is a Hope land based around having Forever work to help save consorts who are hiding beneath intense structures and live in very isolate communities from each other. There's also massive megafauna in the skies that are always trying to kill them. - Land of Electronics and Experiments, Mike's land, is a pretty typical doom land, based around Chume labs, and has a constant lightning storm overhead - Land of Dancefloors and Dollhouses, Pac's land, is a combination of a land quest he has to get through, and a typical time land. All time lands have a clockwork or a music theme, I think him having a hot pink land that's massive amounts of dollhouse rooms attached to each other he has to make it through is just a fun concept. - Land of Cloud and Sky, Felps's world, is just a land with everything high in the sky. His whole quest is about him harnessing his ability to go with the flow to connect his consorts together. This is hard when he's sprited himself after dying upon entering due to Cellbit fucking up and accidentally killing him, and living in a robot body built by Mike. Aradia style. - Land of Searchlight and Bone, Cellbit's world, is a giant panopticon style prison. With so many bones, both decorating the prison, and filling the prison cells. His final moment is when he gets to the office of the panopticon, and it is his quest bed. He has a whole ordeal over it.

RICARLYSON! So these guys have regular consorts and Denizens, Richarlyson spawns in the heart of Skaia, and gives the quest for the other five guys to raise him.

Pac (Page of Time) has the ability to manipulate time as he wants once he realizes his abilities. Mike (Witch of Doom) can rip a hole in the universe so big it saves all of the players and sets them smack in the middle of another session, especially a previously contacted session with the connection being a Maid of Doom. With a time player land as well, they get a scratch construct on the Land of Dancefloors and Dollhouses, setting up their ability to scratch their session and set loose a whole new universe where theirs once stood.

French

The French session has probably the most normal planets of everything going on here, what really starts their journey going awry is that they have no time player.

Antoine, being a Seer of Void, can see something is going wrong. He makes contact with people outside of their session in an attempt to restore things to balance. He goes off into the veil and contacts the horrorterrors, and sets up a connection between two Doom players who seem they both desperately need it.

While he's doing that, the rest of the French proceed to have the most normal Sburb session out of anyone. Etoiles is having a great time on his planet. Aypierre gets a genesis tadpole. Kameto has two backup lives.

French Planets (Brief Edition) - Land of Apples and Airplanes, Baghera's land! It's probably the nicest land of anyone's. There are many jokes about how she doesn't get why everyone keeps complaining about their lands being horrible until she reaches theirs. - Land of Sham and Soil, Antoine's land, it's a dark land with tall dirt towers that make it impossible to see where you step. You'd need to be someone who could find where you're going in the pitch dark to even survive here. - Land of Bonds and Breakouts, Etoiles's land, is a land of a giant maze dungeon labyrinth. It's a nightmare for everyone but him. He loves it. - Land of Bogs and Frogs, AyPierre's land, is a land with frogs in a very thick swamp. I'll be honest i Just need to cook on this one some more. - Land of Hidden Leaves and War, Kameto's land, is a Naruto joke.

POMME! Is like Richas she's in the middle of Skaia. An easter egg if you will.

The French session is brought into the primary session when Antoine manages to contact with everyone else fully, rather than quietly watch from the outside. Etoiles and Baghera lose their original selves, and are their dreamselves when the universes collide in, and were unable to godtier, due to not knowing about the quest slabs.

GODTIERING! & the rest of the chronological story

THIS is the order of the godtiers from the beginning of the Spanish-English session. Anyone in the other sessions who godtier before their universe collide event has a red numeral to keep them distinct. I feel pretty strongly almost everyone would godtier here, they're all characters based on gamers. Sburb au works exceptionally well when you know everyone's gaming style.

Also, yeah I have notes listed on each godtier order for how each person dies. Like it's that detailed atp.

Spreen has the highest kill count out of everyone on purpose. I think he'd be down to cut his friends down knowing they'd be revived immortal afterward. As well as, the federation is Prospit in this scenario, they want everyone to godtier. I think him playing to what they want out of him feels his style. Anyway, he sprites his own dreamself due to ElQuackity messing with timeloops. To make his living player self trust him, Spreensprite convinces him to godtier Roier first. It is himself he's talking to, after all. Roier becomes the first godtier in any universe, and not out of his own volition. After seeing it really did work with Roier, Spreen godtiers himself. He gets li'l bear ears ala Jade getting doggy ears with her dreamself sprited, he threw in a Rubius cubito to his kernelsprite first. I like the bear ears I'm biased .3. q!Spreen being really fun in a Sburb concept is why I got hooked on this au after all.

After the first lore is repeated, BBH godtiers himself by decapitating himself with a sendificator to fuck with Foolish. He's kinda bitter about getting beige clothes. He befriends the midnight crew at least. This is before he has Dapper. He finds out about godtiering from Roier by accident and then is like. Oh I have the BEST idea.

Vegetta is killed by Spreen by request, wanting to be stronger to protect Leo, and then Spreen godtiers Missa in order to use his time powers on Derse to throw his dreamself at the kernelsprite, locking the time loop. Anyway, Missa is essentially locked in a tower on Derse's moon after this, now permanently in his Dreamself's body, who hadn't awoken prior. Fit realizes people are walking around in weird clothes, hears about it vaguely from BBH, sends a text to Spreen who'd been ghosting him, and goes like. Hey man. Wanna kill me? And gets his first reply in months.

Phil is attacked by an overpowered monster and almost dies, and Missa manages to get the message to Fit that this is happening through time shenanigans, and Fit manages to get him to his questbed before he fully dies and loses his dreamself. Phil is not happy about this and could not be angrier. He doesn't blame Fit though it's like a self anger thing.

THE BRAZILIAN CASCADE HAPPENS! PEOPLE DIE. By which I mean Slimecicle and Mariana work together to try to help the Brazilians into the session in a bid at saving Juanaflippa, hoping one of them have the ability to revive her. Slimecicle is murdered in the crypts of Prospit by Quackity in a duel, where he cuts off Quackity's arm in exchange for Quackity cutting down his life. Truly one of those luck moments where Charlie dies on his questslab. Mariana is murdered at the same time by Spreen, who is now fully working under orders from the Federation.

Pre-cascade, Pac and Mike both godtier, because they stumble into a stable timeloop, by Mike accidentally glitching Pac's questslab into throwing it at him and killing him. He godtiers with this. Now, as a fully godtiered page of time, they make it to Mike's questbed, and godtier!Mike nudges Pac's slab at Past!Mike to pick up and throw when fucking around with powers.

Felps godtiers in the cascade along with Mariana and Slimecicle, they leave behind Derse and its moon, and they both get destroyed. Where his body sleeping on the quest slab godtiers. Aradia style. Except... as a Maid of Breath, his robot sprite body doesn't explode. He just sort of... exists in both. When one falls asleep the other wakes up. The rest of the Brazilian session just assumes the Cascade fucked with his robot body's energy sources. He kind of just figures each side is a weird dream he keeps having.

Cellbit is staunchly anti-godtier, while Forever wants someone he trusts to godtier him. Cellbit refuses to godtier Forever, and causes a major fight between them. Then Spreen murders Cellbit into his godtier under orders from the Federation, which is preceded by a long Scooby-doo-esque chase, where BBH sees them both, and decides to follow. BBH is a fully godtiered Knight of Life here, he has resurrection powers for other players, and Spreen is functionally immortal as well. BBH 100% catches up to him after he kills Cellbit, and proceeds to put Spreen in a torment nexus of dying and undeath. Thus ends the Killing Spree(n).

AND THEN THE FRENCH CASCADE HAPPENS! The final session connects, and Baghera sacrifices herself to make it happen. After they make it in, they learn about Quest slabs, and there's a whole thing with Etoiles dramatically getting her to her questslab before she fully dies. Etoiles then proceeds to go kill himself on the questslab immediately after. Felps is also hanging out with the French, they found him hanging out in the void and take him with them. They lose Kameto in the void however, nobody's really sure where he went.

Pre-French Cascade, Antoine is the only French player to godtier, and no one will explain how it happened. It seems like no one really knows, but Etoiles keeps saying more fantastical descriptions every time someone asks. He's never taken his seer hood off of his face.

Back in the order of the godtiers, Forever befriends Baghera, and eventually her and Etoiles and Cellbit help him godtier. It's a whole event. Richas is having a blast.

Bobby dies, and Jaiden decides to godtier in order to get into the Federation's good graces, as well as out of guilt of feeling that if she were stronger and godtiered she could have saved him. Roier godtiers her.

AyPierre is godtiered in a tragic accident with one of his many machines. Etoiles helps pull him to his quest bed. He's a Thief of Space he has fun with it.

Foolish is the second to last person to godtier, and he is godtiered by Pomme by accident. He wanted his godtier to be as cool as possible, and somehow managed to not godtier by this point. It's just very him. He's down with the page pants.

Quackity is the final member to godtier. BBH kills ElQ at one end of the universe with the aid of Maximus. Slimecicle kills the regular QQ in one final duel.

At the end of the universe, the only people left alive and able to contact the rest of the sessions to never godtier are Wilbur and Maxo.

DanTDM disappears on the Land of Synapses and Static, never to be seen again, along with Turnip following soon after.

Luzu finds a glitch and is absorbed by it not long after he enters.

Nobody is really sure if Kameto godtiered or not.

MISCELLANEOUS NOTES

We're currently working on figuring out sprites for everyone, so hey! I might come back and add an update on that, but this post is so long my computer is lagging. I have a gaming laptop. It shouldn't be doing that. Here's some stuff on the sprites we do have + some misc notes.

Cellbit's flashlightkind is like how Kanaya's lipstick works. It's a chainsaw.

Spreen has Spreensprite, BBH has Skeppysprite, Missa has a sprite that is a mysterious skull sprited twice called Skullskullsprite, and Roier has his dog with a spiderman called Dogmansprite, and Jaiden has Arisprite, who's Miku & Ari combined :D (thanks icarus!)

On creating a wiki for your worldbuilding

Do you have a lot of lore to keep track of? Whether you're an author, a Game Master, or simply someone who really really likes worldbuilding, this post is for you.

Here's a quick overview of what I'll be talking about:

Platforms people use to create personal wikis

Formats and organization systems you may find useful when creating your own wiki

A brief look at the actual content you might put in your wiki (I'm planning a more in-depth post on that later with more images and demos)

And because this is gonna be a long'un, I'm putting a read-more here! I'll also make downloadable epub and PDF versions of this post available for free on my Ko-Fi at some point in the future.

(I'm also planning to reblog with a list of links later on, but I want this initial post shows up in search)

Also now that you're here, I'm going to say this isn't, like, super comprehensive or anything. I'm just talking about stuff I know a little about or have experience with. Please feel free to reblog with additions and/or corrections as needed!

What is a wiki?

According to Wikipedia, "a wiki is a hypertext publication collaboratively edited and managed by its own audience, using a web browser."

In this case, you'll likely be the sole person making updates to your wiki. The web browser part is optional these days as well, as you'll soon see.

Platforms for creating wikis

Websites for creating worldbuilding wikis

WorldAnvil

This one is actually designed for people who want to create big worldbuilding wikis.

Pros: Worldbuilding prompts! Those are great. It's got a pretty comprehensive set of article types too.

Cons: Kind of expensive to upgrade for features like making your wiki private, and it does NOT work well with adblock turned on, so if you don't want to pay for a membership you'll get inundated with ads. I'm not a huge fan of the interface in general and a lot of it isn't intuitive, but I like what they're doing so I support them anyway.

Tiddlywiki/Tiddlyhost.com.

In addition to having a cat as its icon and also a silly name, each 'article' you create with this is called a 'tiddler' which makes me think of Chuck Tingle. I haven't used it much myself yet, but I did make an account and it seems pretty neat.

Miraheze

A community-hosted wiki platform that runs on MediaWiki (which is what Wikipedia runs off of).

Pros: It's not Fandom.com.

Cons: You have to request a wiki and can't just make it yourself, as far as I can tell. I haven't actually looked into this one as much.

Neocities

An option for if you want to go super oldschool and create a website using only basic html and hyperlinks (without the handy shortcuts of bbcode or Markdown). Monthly cost is $5 usd if you want to have more space and your own domain.

Pros: 100% control over your content.

Cons: Doesn't support PHP databases for wiki software, and can be fairly labour-intensive to update if you break a link or something.

Fandom.com

Unfortunately, this one is the top result you'll get when you look up how to make your own wiki. I'm only including it here to tell you to stay as far away from it as possible!!

Its staff are known to ban wiki creators from their own wikis and a bunch of other nonsense that I'm not getting into here.

Programs and apps/web apps for creating worldbuilding wikis

Obsidian.md

My personal favourite. I'm planning to make a whole post about how I use it in the near future as part of this article series.

It's a markdown-based application that you can get on just about any platform (Windows, MacOS, Linux, iOS, Android, etc) which is great. Obsidian is really easy to pick up and use and also has great themes and community plugins!

Best thing is, it's FREE and you only have to pay if you use their publishing service, which... I don't, so.

Notion

I've heard this one is pretty good too. Idk if it costs anything. It's another "second brain" style app (might be markdown also?) and I think it might do more than Obsidian, but I haven't checked it out much myself.

Microsoft Word/Google Docs etc.

...Or just about any word processor that lets you create internal hyperlinks. Word may work best due to the collapsible headings so it doesn't get too unwieldy, but *shrug* whatever floats your boat.

Excel/Google Sheets etc.

Or, again, any spreadsheet creator that lets you create internal hyperlinks.

I'd recommend having some basic spreadsheet knowledge before doing this. It could get complicated. Before I started using Obsidian, I was using Sheets to keep track of my glossary, notes about characters, and plot ideas.

Types of formatting & organization systems

There are as many organization systems as there are people who want to organize their stuff. Everybody needs something a little different! I find the ones that work best for me are systems that have a lot of customization options.

Here are a couple I know of.

Johnny Decimal

This system is absurdly simple in its concept and yet so versatile. From their website (it's just johnnydecimal dot com but I'll link it in a reblog later):

Take everything you need to organise and sort it in to, at most, ten large buckets.

Make sure the buckets are unambiguously different.

Put a label on each bucket.

Their website has a better explanation than I can give in this post, but I'll sum up the appeal of this system as quoted from their site: "There's only one place anything can ever be."

Usefully, part of this method is creating a directory for the rest of the system.

So if you're like me and tend to shove things wherever only to lose track of it later, this is a great system—especially when used in conjunction with the Zettelkasten Method (see below).

Zettelkasten Method

Originally devised as an extensive paper-based knowledge management system, Zettelkasten is meant to easily add new entries to a knowledge base while giving each one a unique ID for easy 'linking.'

The creator of this method said 'it is not important where you place the note, as long as you can link to it.'

As with the Johnny Decimal system, I can't explain it super succinctly (nor can the website, if I'm being honest), so I'll include a link in a future reblog for a video that gave me an excellent run-down of the basics.

Setting up your own system

An organization system is only useful if you can actually, y'know, use it.

It can be fun to set up a super-detailed organization system with predetermined categories for everything, but is it easy for you to use? How will you navigate it?

Making decisions

There will be a lot of decisions to make as you set up your system. The only set-in-stone rule I follow is... don't set anything in stone. It's okay if you decide something that doesn't work later on.

Figuring out your categories

My advice: go fairly broad. You can always sub-categorize. I'm going to go over my own wikis for Athenaeum and Rocket Boosters in detail in a later post, but here are the starting top-level categories I'd recommend for worldbuilders:

A meta category for notes about your database, templates, and any relevant research you've done.

Characters, including main characters, minor characters, and important figures

Worldbuilding

In the last category, which is the main reason for the existence of my wiki, I might have:

Culture

History

Locations

Organizations

Lore (if relevant)

Technology

Transportation

I'll go over the nuances of these 'main' subcategories in that future post I mentioned. In other words, the stuff that actually goes in those categories!

Determining the importance and relevance of worldbuilding elements

You'll need to figure out whether a topic is complex enough to deserve its own entry, or if it should be a sub-heading under another entry. It's okay if you decide on both! I have short subheadings under some entries that amount to "see [link to main entry on that topic]."

I've also decided to expand subheadings into their own topics, and I've removed topics as their own entry and shoved them under subheadings. I do this a lot, in fact! So it's okay if you don't know.

Templates

Will you be creating several of one type of entry?

Individual character profiles

Towns and cities

Factions

(to name a few)

It might be handy to figure out the basic types of information you'll need about each of those things and create a template for them.

A character template might have spaces for the basics, such as name, role, age, and so on.

Some characters will have a lot more information, and some might have even less than what your template dictates! And that's fine.

A word of warning about using system-creation as procrastination

Creating a wiki can be a daunting task. You might decide it's not for you, and that's okay. But you might also decide to go headlong into the process and work on every minute detail, and that is also okay, but.

But.

Beware of using your wiki as an excuse to procrastinate your actual writing/session preparation. Yes, use it to keep track of all the lore you've injected into your manuscript/campaign/whatever, just make sure it stays in its place as a companion to your main project rather than becoming your main project.

How formal should your entries be?

Honestly this one's entirely up to you. I have a mix. Some entries are written like Wikipedia entries with a thorough explanation of the topic with proper punctuation and formatting, while others are simply bullet-point lists of thoughts and ideas that I can return to at a later date.

The studio was warm in the coldest night of this Autumn, warm yellowish light and the red carpeted floor made it feel like a cosy log cabin. A full drum set with a few too many ride cymbals and windchimes sat close to the middle of the fat bare bricked wall, with a small metal bucket that had the remains of broken splinter drumsticks. A rack of guitars and two bass holders stood next to the right wall where an old armchair sits, a few different sized amps scattered round the square room. Right in front of the glass that separates the control room from the studio three mic stand in a line with noise cancelling boxes surrounding each of them.

In the control room there is a strong smell of weed and other smokeable herbs, "No! You can't take Runaway Blues off the album!" A man with short shoulder length brown hair and a moustache protested as he puffed on his cigarette as he lied back on the couch, his dark glasses fell back on his face as he tilted his head back. "I agree with Jake. It shows how good we are even when we're shit faced." The man with long curly hair, a gorgeous ethnic nose, stood up – towering over the other 4 people in the sesh – and began to roll another blunt on one of the control panels. The one that started this debated piped in, "Thanks Dan for taking my side." He said sarcastically, his curly mullet was like a solid cloud on his head, and he has a moustache like Jake. "We'll our wonderful manager and producer here," A man that looked like Jesus pointed to a woman that sat next to Jake on the couch. "Was the one that wasn't shit faced, I think that's why it was actually good, Joshua." He finished. "Hey, hey, I'm not saying it's shit because of you, please believe me y/n!" Josh dramatically pleaded to y/n. She was looking up at the ceiling. Pupils dilated. Blunt in hand. "Just, make it shorter." She said confidently, waving her hand a bit. Still not looking at anyone and head craned back. "You have the answer to everything." Danny said his mouth slightly gaped that such a simple solution didn't register in any of their minds. Or he's just on a psychedelic trip and can't spark up a brain cell.

The following week the band had dates in LA since they were still doing there 'Dreams in Gold' Tour. The band was already at the venue setting up, some still sleeping in the bus. Y/n had some business to attend to in their studio in New York before going down to LA. She decided to walk down the infamous Sunset Strip, as a historic music place like this could not go untrekked when having the chance. Wearing a black turtleneck, dark blue flare jeans with dark brown boots and a satchel bag hanging from her shoulder, a small suitcase's handle in the other hand while the silver case dragged its wheels on the floor. As she caught the sight of the colourful sign of The Rainbow, a voice called to her. "Y/n?" A older man, short blondish hair, leather jacket, sunglasses.

Axl Rose.

And like the trigger of a gun being pulled,

A life was lost.

Y/n's POV:

Everything stood still,

I stood still.

Then it all went dark. It was a black lifeless void.

Falling backwards but being physically still.

Time was reversing.

A previous life. My life?

Memories rolling past like an old film.

I can't comprehend this. What is happening to me?

My first years of school, late 60's early 70's. That's not right. It was the early 2000's.

Falling in love with music, Queen, Elton John.

Highschool was trip. My parents being stricter than anyone else's, they didn't believe I could have a job as in the music industry.

Studying music in college then going on the Uni and taking a science course to get my folks off my back.

One of my most successful record deals was Mötley Crüe and Bon Jovi.

Before they even started writing lyrics for their songs, I knew it off by heart and helped them gain success with it and recording went like dream.

Now I was searching the East Coast for a new band to sign.

March 1985, The City of Angels.

A flash of light, and my eyes flickered open.

It a cold night, dark but the city light was somewhat comforting.

It was the Sunset Strip, but something was...

Analysing the Quality of Napoleon's Marshals With Silly Data Science

Let's talk numbers and laugh at funny graphs with missing data!

Other people in this fandom do really lovely detailed information posts, I do weird fanfic, dragon shitposting, body pillow design shitposting and run a stupid Lannes ask rp blog. But! I'm also a programmer with an interest in Numbers, and today we're going to Analyse These Dead Frenchmen with a bunch of screenshots of graphs.

Ethan Arsht published a really interesting article called Napoleon was the Best General Ever, and the Math Proves it., where using data scraped off Wikipedia articles, he creates a statistical model drawing from multiple variables per battle to calculate How Good A General Is At Winning.

Give the article a read, it's great stuff, but if you don't feel like it, he basically applies WAR - "Wins Above Replacement" - which is a value from baseball that measures how many wins a player is worth when compared to a replacement.

So the general's WAR would be how well they compare to a completely average general who replaced them. Yes, as Arsht says, "in other words, I would find the generals’ WAR, in war."

But as he says, this is not a stringent historical analysis and is more of a fun thought experiment. Wikipedia is probably the most comprehensive dataset on this topic that he had access to, but it is Wikipedia the crowdsourced online encyclopedia, so it is going to have holes and inaccuracies. And this was written seven years ago, and the data was collected then, so any updates to these articles since then wouldn't be reflected.

And it's not a perfect model that takes into account everything - it's an approximation, a whole bunch of number crunching. I haven't looked too deeply into how the numbers work exactly, even though I could.

I think that 0 would be "completely and utterly average"? A positive WAR is good, a negative WAR is not. Napoleon is the best general ever at 16.679 WAR, the next highest is Caesar at 7.445 WAR.

But I'm interested in Napoleon's marshals. The 26 men he raised up to military nobility! The dramatic assholes who kept arguing with each other. I'll post links for all of them at the end of this, but I won't be screenshotting each of their WAR graphs, just a few.

I'm not entirely sure how the scraper collected the information about what battles a commander is considered in "charge" of - I tried looking at the provided code repository but I am reminded that data science people bless them are not really good at structuring or publishing code and why are all the html pages just straight up saved in the root folder why are the jupyter notebook outputs just uncleared aaaaaaaaaaaaaaa

Oh yeah this was scraped from seven years ago so current wikipedia pages won't be reflective of what's on the graphs - so we can assume that this is just grabbing stuff from the "Commanders and leaders" part from each individual battle page and collating them into numbers

Anyway let's look at the iron man himself, Davout, considered to be the best of Napoleon's marshals.

honestly this is the entire reason why i wanted to write this post

in soult's defense - as a soult defender - he had a pretty shitty army full of conscripts, was isolated, was occasionally pretty bad at adapting tactically to new surprises and had to deal with the english being stubborn fuckers, but he was brilliant in setting things up strategically and forcing the english to catch up through a fighting retreat with a demoralised army, stopping them from closing in on france too

but also the way this graph bullies soult so hard makes me laugh a lot

Anyway, yeah, these graphs are definitely inaccurate and I'm also posting these to see the Napoleonic community on tumblr's reaction to them, but they are a fun way to engage with history!

Just don't take them seriously, and feel free to argue in the tags/comments/reblogs

I could theoretically use this guy's code to rerun this just for the Marshals now - I know my way around some data science code - but I do have a lot on my plate, but it would be a fun experiment!

Bearhugsandshrugs Update – April '24: Discord, beta reader match ups, WIPs, book writing!

Hey all, it's been a while since I shared an update!

TL;DR: Updates on fics, community things, and my life!

Last time I told you about the book proposal I wrote for my agent, and I managed to complete that and submit it! Even better news was that she liked it. So I will refine parts of the story I wrote to incorporate her feedback, and then in a month or so it'll go out to publishing houses in the hopes that someone buys it! Keep your fingers crossed for me so your girl gets published :)

Admin: Discord Server, Community, Pinned Post

In case you missed it: I launched a discord server where we hangout to talk about Gort and writing. Last week we finished the first writing buddy match up, where I paired six writers with a buddy so they can beta each other's fics. It made me super happy that the community came together in that way!

There will also be a super cool event coming soon that @littleplasticrat came up with, I'll share more on that next week when I have more headspace to give this the hype post it deserves. Just teasing a bit: it does involve Gorty and fashion :3

I also published a new lore & theory masterlist for BG3 and I'm working on compiling the drabbles and headcanon lists, too.

WIPs

In March I already told you that I was moving all WIPs to May, maybe even June. Since I'll be traveling in May, I might or might not have time to work on the WIPs.

Worthy Chapter 3: Structure is drafted. ETA hopefully in May

Folie Chapter 7: I scrapped the entire structure. While I'm motivated to write Raph and Haarlep again, I'm not particularly fond of my original idea so I have to redo the last chapter, ETA probably June

Durgetash series (concept linked) and Raphael series (concept linked): on hold for now. Neither of them grabbed my attention long enough for me to do more with it.

There's one fic/art trade I'm going to write for @tatterings and it's likely either going to be Astarion or monster fucking. So keep an eye out for that.

Series

Both MAD and Gorsimp are continuing! I'm sketching out Act 3 for MAD which we're about to enter. Due to life stuff I changed to posting schedule to every two weeks for MAD, while Gorsimp continues to update 1-2x a week (mostly thanks to @bloodlessbhaalbabe's incredible discipline on keeping us on a schedule).

And in more MAD news, I made a playlist for that fic! Give it a listen if you want to cry.

Other stuff

I'm slowly coming back online after a few really bad months of physical and emotional health turmoil. I'm okay for now and I've been taking care of myself, creating some distance from the fandom to protect my peace of mind, and I'll probably continue to take it slow for a while.

Last time I said I'd do another giveaway when I hit 1k followers. Since I've barely been on I haven't made much progress – it's about 50 followers or so away, but this blog isn't really growing right now. Guess I'm getting a much needed break from taking on too many WIPs :D anyway, I just wanted to say it's still on my mind, but I don't particularly feel the need to promote it because it'll happen when it happens.

Something cool to celebrate in the meantime: Folie à Deux hit over 1,000 kudos on AO3! Crazy to me!!! Thank you all so much. Tumblr Sexywoman Poll: Final Roster

Alright folks here's the final roster for my Tumblr sexywoman poll. Other people have done this but I want to see what kind of drama I can stir up this time. This will be a poll on which sexywoman is the most Iconic TM. What that means - if she's actually sexy, if she had cultural impact, if you just like her character, etc - is up to the individual voter.

Polls for each round will be up at 8 AM PST, with round 1 starting on February 7. Rounds 1 and 2 will last for one day each, rounds 3 and 4 will last for 2 days each, and round 5 will last for three days. Just to build dramatic tension. (EDIT: I checked and Tumblr is lame, unfortunately, so my only options are to keep the poll up for a day or a week. I will keep the first three rounds up for a day each. I'll probably have the last two rounds up for a day too but if enough people thing keeping one or both of them up for a week is good for dramatic tension I will do that.) I will also have a one-day buffer between each round to prepare for the next one. (Please bear with me - I'm a student.)

A disclaimer: I don't know almost half the franchises on this roster. I only know them from the sheer volume of horny fanart of said characters that crosses my dash via osmosis. I am aware some characters on here are minors in canon, and there may be more in the franchises that I don't know.

The inclusion of canonically underage characters does not reflect my values, only that I've seen a lot of people on Tumblr sexywoman-ify them. Regardless of whether it was right in the first place, I've seen people on Tumblr be horny about all the characters on this list. To not include them on this poll would be disingenuous.

This post will be pinned and updated with links to the polls for each round. All polls will be tagged "tumblr sexywoman poll" on my blog in case I don't get around to updating the links right after the polls are up. While I LOVE to see people arguing over their blorbos this poll is just one elaborate shitpost on my end so I hope everyone keeps it lighthearted and fun. May the best Tumblr sexywoman win!

For Christmas this year, I treated myself to a new external hard drive. It's 5 TB, which is pretty much the most storage space I can get before the hard drive gets too physically big to fit on the back of my laptop where it lives like a parasite. It's great, I am so pleased with the purchase. I was able to consolidate so much stuff from other, smaller hard drives. And I left the stuff on those other hard drives too, so now those act as backups in case something goes wrong with one hard drive. I have a few of the most important things backed up in the cloud as well, but I like having a physical media collection with physical backups.

Instead of having my comedy stuff spread across several different places, I now have one big comedy folder (currently 1.54 TB) with lots of sub-folders for different comedians, where I have their stand-up and TV shows they've made and radio shows and audiobooks and ebooks and whatever else I have downloaded by that person, all in one place. It's so convenient. There's a whole system for things like mixed-bill gigs where I have the same file copied to the folders of each individual person on the bill. Or if it's not just one file but a big folder, I use shortcuts. My folder with every No More Jockeys episode is in the Mark Watson sub-folder but a shortcut is in the Tim Key one. I have a lot of systems for that sort of thing.

So I can generally - not always as a perfect measurement, but generally - tell how big a fan I am of a comedian by how much stuff is in their comedy sub-folder. It's especially telling if their folder starts getting its own sub-folders. If there's so much in there that I have to separate it into stand-up shows, TV shows, books, etc.

I know I'm really going too far down a comedian rabbit hole if they get a sub-folder just for their guest appearances on other things. Mainly I use their folder for their own stuff - things where they were the writer, presenter, and/or star actor. But in some rare cases, I'll collate episodes of a variety of shows that are hosted by other people, in which this comedian was a guest. I don't do that often, there are a lot of comedians whom I'd count among my favourites who do not have sub-folders like that. So if someone does have one, it's a major sign that I've been rabbit hole digging.

It's fine. I happened, today, to be going through my posts from a year ago because someone asked for a link to one. While doing this, I happened to find a post I made almost exactly a year ago, from which I'd like to copy-paste an excerpt:

John Robins is dangerous. Not in general or anything - just to me, right now. It is, as I’ve said, the fastest I’ve ever turned around on liking something like this. My opinion on him for quite a while was… “Well I don’t have a really good reason to dislike him, but he’s just sort of annoying, right? Every time he’s a guest on something I wish he weren’t. I don’t even know how to explain it, he just reminds me a little of Phil from The Thick of It?” Then I watched The Darkness of Robins and listened to A Robin Amongst the Pigeons, and learned that not only was I wrong, I was the exact opposite of right. He perfectly appeals to everything I like best in a comedian, I just judged him on that one Mock the Week appearance even though Sara Pascoe was also being a dick in that episode, and I didn’t hold it against her because I already liked her. Anyway, he’s become dangerous now because any time I hear him do anything, I’m reminded more of how much he appeals to every single thing I like in a comedian, and I want to hear more of him. Which is bad, because there’s large rabbit hole that I could fall down, but I have shit to do. It isn’t the lockdowns of 2021 anymore, so unlike back then, I can’t just sit down and listen to over a hundred hours of a radio show featuring some guy who spent 2006 in one particular house in Bristol. I’m sorry Robins, I only have so much capacity to do that, and I spent it all on Jon Richardson and Russell Howard. No, I didn’t know at that time that Russell Howard was going to turn into a Jordan Peterson advocate; if I’d known that, maybe I’d have given you more of a chance. But we can’t go back now, can we?

I was right, it was dangerous. I'm pleased to say I managed to hold out for almost a whole year before taking a hard fall down the rabbit hole.

I advised you as the writer to read until the end to be able to understand how to and what you are allowed to request, I understand if some of you are displeased by these rules however not following these would make me uncomfortable.

My page is a safe place for everyone, any nationality, race, gender, sexuality and all else is accepted unless you, yourself discriminate against others. In that case you'd be blocked. I can guarantee you that your comfort character or s/o would not care what you looked like (if anything I think they'd adore it), they would love you either way.

Disclaimer: It would take some time to write your requests, especially that I don't have a schedule for this. I have a personal life to balance behind all of this, though I cannot promise a certain date, I would update you on your requested fanfic. I would only be able to do this if you did not request anonymously, if you did I would try my best to publish it as soon as I can.

I like taking my time with writing and I know some people don't like waiting for too long or aren't patient enough, I don't have a specific posting schedule so please keep that in mind.

I don't write smut, it makes me quite uncomfortable and I have no experience writing it. Also Wattpad may or may not have been the reason why. (However the act of doing it can be mentioned and some borderline explicit content but not too much, I'm just not gonna go into detail about it)

I don't do homophobic, transphobic, racist, political, religious, pedophilia fics or any of that kind. Maybe mentions of it, and it will have a warning but never a fic where that's the plot and it's advertised as good.

I can write cheating fics however I don't not condone it in any way and I would only write them if it's the character cheating.

I only do x readers, I've always written it and character x character is something I never got back too. Not that I've written anything x character, it's just that ever since I started writing it's always been x readers. (I would only write a character x character if it's implemented within a fic)

I can write female and gender neutral readers.

I am all for polyamory whether it'd be pivot (multiple people are in a relationship with one person) or all three (or more) in a relationship.

Headcannons, depending on the length of each one, 6 characters maximum. Scenarios, depends on the request. One-shots, 1 character and plot (unless it's poly). (I meant all these numbers separately, like a separate character for each one)

Grace of The Terminator and Reese of Dark Fate.

In this post I'm going to outline some of the main ways Terminator: Dark Fate deliberately treats Grace as a counterpart to Kyle Reese in T1/The Terminator.

There are plenty of allusions to Kyle as a character with Grace, in some cases with a bit of a twist, and we know those echoes are deliberate rather than accidental for reasons I'll go into below.

I’m mostly just itemising them here and some of it will also crossover with the Sarah Connor stuff posted before, but I wanted to have this together in one place to refer back to. Not least so that in a future piece when I say “Hey, you know how Grace is playing Kyle’s part, well…” I can link back and people can see what I mean if they want, without having to take a huge diversion in-text.

So like I say, I won’t go too deep into the big picture implications of this stuff, but that's something I have got in the pipeline.

Finally, if I’ve missed out on anything obvious, I’d love to know - I will be updating in future if I think of anything else to add.

It's all happening under the cut, baby.

First though, a word -

Word of God.

Before getting into the stuff from the movies themselves, I want to look at what Tim Miller himself says about it.

He drew the parallel explicitly in this interview with EW (and probably others) -

“There’s this new future because of what Sarah did at the end of Terminator 2, and it’s worse than ever,” reveals Miller. “And that gives us the opportunity for these new characters. Gabriel comes from something that is not Skynet, but it’s like Skynet. And Mackenzie comes from something that Kyle Reese and the Resistance did.”

The context here feels a little garbled, but to clarify I don’t believe he means Kyle’s actions literally, directly brought about Grace, I think he’s framing her as part of the Target/Protector/Attacker triumvirate he mentions here. YMMV, so I've linked both.

Regardless, we know from this that Grace as a successor to Kyle was a conscious thing. That established, more interesting to me at least are the ways that is done by the movie, and that's really what I want to talk about.

1 – Come With Me If…

The first half of T1 is played as a surprisingly straight mystery, and the full bore sci-fi and horror stuff really only takes over pretty late in the day. Who are these two extremely weird dudes tailing Sarah across town? What are their respective goals are in Los Angeles tonight, and how are they connected either to Sarah or each other?

Both are presented as alien and possibly threatening to Sarah in different ways, but it’s mostly Kyle, not the T800, who is presented as the most immediate threat – he’s a strange, dirty stalker, with improvised weapons and unpredictable behaviours, and he's cunning enough to evade the police Sarah still genuinely believes might help her. The T800 is clearly weird and dangerous, but he’s a shadowy, distant ogre of a thing, lurking almost out of view by comparison.

All of this is exploded at last when the T800 catches up with Sarah in a nightclub, and finally gets her in his sights. Reese shows up with his shotgun to save Sarah just in time - “Come with me if you want to live”, he says, and in an instant, everyone’s cards are on the table.

Grace declaring herself to Dani by essentially quoting Reese's opener is how Dark Fate first definitively tells us she’s a goodguy just like him.

Though the trailers spoiled the shit out of it, if you watch Dark Fate in isolation it’s clear we’re not meant to be sure which of the two time-travellers is aggressor, and which is protector, right up until the shooting starts. James Cameron himself talks about this in the “Legend Reforged” featurette, noting that we’re given conflicting clues about which one is which for the first 20 minutes of the movie.

Until then, in fact, people who encounter the Rev-9 are generally better off than anyone who runs into Grace. The Rev-9 shapeshifts, sure - and Taco thinks he’s no good, yeah - but it’s Grace we see actually hurt people and use a digital HUD to fight with superhuman reflexes and speed. Where the Rev-9 is downright personable to everyone it encounters, Davis plays Grace initially as a little odd and… well, mechanical.

Rev-9 even seems to have the inside track on where Dani is. Grace lands in the middle of nowhere and has to find her way across town to link up with her, but he seems to have her home address from the get-go*. He introduces himself as her friend, but Grace is friendly to nobody so far.

By the time everyone does step into the open in the factory, okay, sure you have probably started betting on Grace, but it’s still a little ambiguous. It remains so right up until the moment Dani’s dad pulls a gun, and Grace appears from nowhere to say the magic words and blow his face off.

Grace breaking out her shotgun serves mostly the same purpose as Kyle's in T1 - showing that she’s here to protect Dani, not to do her harm – but invoking the line is what defines her as Reese’s direct successor, as surely as uttering a passphrase or flashing an ID badge to camera.

The contract in it is updated a little this time around, all that said – Grace’s offer is “Come with me, or you’re dead in the next 30 seconds” – the nature of the Terminator they’re facing now means that, unlike Reese to Sarah, she can promise Dani only a half-minute of survival at a time.

[*As an aside – Check out how the Rev-9 calls Dani by her good old goverment name, Daniela, something unusual enough for her father to remark on. Grace, from the get-go, addresses her very directly as “Dani” – an instant clue how well she knows her. The Rev-9’s appearance right on Dani’s doorstep might initially suggest his information is better than Grace’s, but it’s likely he’s just taken the address from the same digitised files now that phone books are a thing of the past. Grace has her info from the source - she has been tipped off to go direct to the factory, because that’s where Commander Ramos knows (and remembers) she’s going to be.]

2 – What’s in a name?

Most Terminator geeks call Kyle… well, Kyle, myself included - but actually we only hear that name for the first time in the last third of T1, almost 200 pages into the script.

Up until then, he is referred to only by his surname - Reese. That’s how he introduces himself to strangers, and to Sarah.

In fact it’s even how the script captions all his dialogue; he is exclusively called Reese in the script notations. He only offers his first name to Sarah eventually, as they finally start getting to know and trust each other.

That’s redundant for Grace, obviously, who both knows and trusts Dani more than she can imagine already. Grace dispenses with the formalities altogether, and only bothers offering her first name.

We never do hear her surname in the movie at all though - she goes only by Grace, and even when we glimpse the rest of her family at the end we never learn what they’re all called. According to Tim Miller, the name is “Harper” - but it’s not clear to me that’s altogether canon, and it’s not in the end credits. Even the Rev-9 has a name in the end credits.

Reese, Grace, the point is they’re both fairly close cousins when you yell that single syllable sibilance across a factory floor, and I think that's very definitely an intentional choice.

3 – She's Got The Look.

“[Reese’s] over-coat is off, draped over the shotgun on the seat beside him. His bare arms are sinewy and scarred.”

Visually, Grace has a fairly unique silhouette for the Terminator universe, but she does take some key character design cues from Reese (to the point that even her hairstyle isn’t a mile off, in some of the Future War stuff especially).

As a more overt example though, she and Reese have both been given prominent scars on their left chin/jaw. Reese’s scar is important enough that it’s actually described in detail in the T1 script’s description of him, so it is considered a character element, and – like Grace’s augmentation scars – is used to distinguish the passage of time between one flashback and another, so it’s no coincidence*.

But the characters also share a thing for more deliberate body modifications.

Kyle has an ID tattoo he reveals to Sarah when he’s still earning her trust, put on the inside of his forearm when he was taken as a Skynet work camp prisoner. It’s described in the script like so –

“He pushes up the sleeve of his jacket and shows her a ten-digit number etches on the skin of his forearm. Beneath the numbers is a pattern of lines like the auto-pricing marks on product packages.“

Compare his code to Grace's coordinates -

Unlike Grace’s, it’s got barcode lines along with the digits - but just like hers, it’s an unusual red colouring.

That's interesting because other post T1 properties tend to retcon Kyle’s tattoo to a more generic black ink, but after showing it, Kyle goes on to explain it was burned in by laser rather than inked - so technically it’s a skin brand rather than a tattoo as such.

Grace does refer to her co-ordinates as a tattoo - and it would make sense if it was ink rather than scarring given her healing factor - but reverting to red even though it’s not super screen friendly marks it as a deliberate decision regardless.

Not for nothing also - both of these tattoos are flashed to Sarah Connor personally in the cabin of a car, in order to convince her skeptical ass to get onside.

There probably wasn’t a ton more thematic significance or whatever on the rest of Mackenzie Davis’ real sculpted-looking stomach there incidentally, but I sure would have loved a really good look. Just to make sure and all.

[*What is probably coincidence, but makes for a fun sidenote, is that both scars suffer some continuity issues - Grace has her scar before the Rev-7s attack the Dragonfly, as seen above, but when speaks to the medic it’s turned back into an open wound. It’s seen as an open wound again when we briefly see her awaiting surgery. From there, it seems to disappear, and it continues to reappear and disappear alternately throughout the modern day scenes later too.

Similarly, Kyle’s scar alternates between being a fresh wound to being a scar, before disappearing altogether through T1, and then reappearing again. It’s a classic bit of nerd trivia about T1 as it happens, but although it’s tempting I can’t imagine a deliberate Easter Egg quite so obscure.]

4 – History Lessons

The starkest difference between Kyle and Grace as characters is probably in their upbringings – Kyle tells Sarah outright he was born after the war began, so he didn't experience it directly, and doesn’t know a time before it. In another mark of how much more urgent the threat is this time around though, Grace does – she has already been born in our time, so her war isn't a lifetime away, it’s right around the corner. Unlike Kyle, she remembers the world of now before it was broken, which is presumably why she’s able to adjust to being dumped backwards into it a lot easier than he does. Even then though the parallels are probably deeper than the divergence. Here's how Kyle describes his childhood to Sarah in the T1 script -

REESE (continuing)

Didn't see the war. I was born after, in the ruins. Grew up there. Starving. Hiding from the H-K's.

We only hear about his childhood like this, second hand - but this is the exact situation we see Grace in this scenario on screen. This scene is part of the reshoot reframing Grace and Dani as familial, so I'm inclined to wilfully ignore it for the most part, but it is interesting in that it show us Grace, as a child starving in the ruins, living out the scenario Kyle has described down to a tee. Indeed the fact Future Dani uses the term “HK” in Grace’s flashback is probably drawn from this conversation - it's a term she could only have learned from Sarah, who heard it in turn from Kyle in the very exchange above.

Both movies also use Reese and Grace’s dreams and nightmares as the means to show us their respective Future Wars. Reese is tired enough from running that he simply falls asleep, and we are shown his nightmarish memories in the meantime; Grace loses consciousness due to an Augment crash and has the corresponding flash back (or forward, if you prefer) to the battle at the South Tunnel.

Cameron has often explained that Terminator’s Future War was inspired by a nightmare he had, and Grace’s sequence is shot appropriately, per the commentaries, to echo that - it's meant to look like a nightmare or fever dream, which is why it's distinguished by woozy camera, muted sounds, foggy colours and the quite Hellish imagery of Rev-7s stalking in front of the fiery horizon line. Kyle’s nightmare-memory of the infiltrator massacre pivots around a moment where he ponders an image of Sarah, a photo that's then damaged in the attack – Grace, more directly, looks on at the wounded figure of Dani herself as a sharp reminder of the stakes.

The details, the nuts and bolts are different, but the dynamic is much the same.

5 – Role Play.

Most obviously of all of course, the two characters play similar protective roles.

Grace shows up from the future, having come across time, to protect Dani from her would-be assassin, just as Kyle protected Sarah. Beyond having her quote him on her reveal and repeating his shotgun intro, the movie makes plenty more visual allusions to really underline the point, and uses multiple shots of Grace to recall shots of him in T1, even outside of action sequences (the shots at the top of this post, for example, as both characters realize their pursuer is once again an imminent threat).

But by the end of T1 of course, Kyle’s destiny is revealed to be far more important than simply Sarah’s bodyguard - he is in love with her.

And he has always been in love with her, before ever he met her.

Indeed he frames his decision to come across time as because he’s in love with her, as you can hear here -

Check out the emphasis there by the way, “I came across time for you, Sarah."

Kyle isn't privy to the grand scheme, but he sure as hell knows why he volunteered - I came across time, not because I was ordered to or to save the world, but for you, because I love you.

Within that grand plan, his role isn’t simply to protect Sarah either; it is to love her, and be loved by her in return, so that together they'll conceive the leader to save the human race in the future.

That this is her predecessor's ultimate purpose is something Mackenzie Davis herself is very much aware of, even acknowledging and goofing around with the extrapolation -

- so again, it’s not like this is an unconscious parallel either*.

Davis is more than aware the character her own was proxying wasn't simply there to keep his "Dani" physically safe.

In the both movies, Time Travel for humans is depicted as a painful, and dangerous, thing to endure, and even if the mission succeeds these people will die a very long way from anyone else they might know or care about. Kyle speaks of travelling as if it's something he might only consider doing for love; such that only that person would matter.

One distinction between the two depictions - one that Miller himself highlights - is that time travel from Kyle's future is visually associated with fire and the colour red. Time travel from Grace's is associated with ice and the colour blue. Fire as a motif tends to follow Kyle around throughout T1, in a way that ice and water and the colour blue has a funny habit of following Grace.

What is consistent though is that Kyle's arrival, like Grace's, is depicted as a physically difficult thing to endure, something that not everyone could even survive. In an early T1 draft, Kyle arrived with a working partner who didn't; Grace arrives alone, but few others could have survived the fall that greeted her.

When Kyle tells Sarah he came across time for Sarah, he says it as doing it was a self-evident proof of the love he asserts. We can only take the same as true for Grace.

Obviously Grace’s role from there is a little different to Kyle's because, okay, she doesn’t literally impregnate Dani and they don't literally conceive a warrior-saint together in the process - but she does what she does for the same reason he did, and Dani does inarguably love her back.

Whether that’s all platonic or not is an argument for a subsequent post, but the lengths to which Dani goes for Grace throughout the movie - and, it’s implied, afterwards - can only be interpreted as love in some form.

In a message she records for her as-yet unborn son, Sarah wants John to know that in the few hours she spent with his father, they “loved a lifetime's worth”.

Grace, for her part, has known Dani for years - but Dani only knows Grace for a couple of days, and still, for her sake, sets out to change the course of the future. It’s surely love that prompts Dani to make herself Commander, so she has a chance to save Grace from going back later - just as it was love that had Grace offer her life for Dani’s, out loud, at least three times.

In the end, Dani and Grace’s bond, in the short time they spend together, marks the conception of a future saviour every bit as much as Sarah and Kyle’s sexual liaison. They even have that much in common.

Those are the most overt parallels that come to mind to me, and like I say, I'm all ears to hear more, but the obvious question raised by this stuff is how are we to interpret that?

What are we - or were we, at some point in the movie's development - intended to make of it? Well if you're as interested as I am in that question, stick around, because I'll be thinking about that in much too much detail too, someday soon.

[*This caught my eye btw because Davis said in another interview she’d never actually seen T1 until preparing for the part, so she’s not a lifelong Terminator lore nerd.

You know who is though, clearly, a lifelong Terminator lore nerd, is Tim Miller... so while it’s not impossible this is an off-the-cuff remark entirely on Davis' behalf, it's very tempting to wonder if it was something the two had actually discussed during production. Something to think about, eh?]
