@stripedroseandsketchpads tagged me in this. And oh my god. If you think there are Too Many Words in the fic I publish, you should see my poor notes app. Here is a sneak peek of its contents. I haven't edited for brevity/those I'm actively working on, these are just all the unfinished files I could find. Some I don't intend to do any more with, others I'd really like to pick up again. The only ones being actively worked on right now are the Andor Saga AU and the first one on the list for Andor.

I put ALL the Lymond I could find in mainly for @oughtaagh who has been leaving the most lovely comments on my Lymond fics that I have totally failed to respond to. I'm sorry! I will cycle back round to Lymond one day, it's inevitable <3

C: We decided we were thirsty, and you wanted to go to Cavo's. As yet untitled Brassian alternative scene - what if instead of a great collaborative cover story this was a great collaborative fuck? Almost(?) finished?

Saga AU pt 2. This actually does have a working title of 'The Bear and the Berserk' but this doc is just a short bullet point list of plot things for a specific part of the fic.

Cassian pov. It's a Cassian pov chapter! For...drumroll...the first chapter of the Saga AU pt 2! The rest is going to be back to Brasso FPN. The file actually includes a rough first draft of chapter 2, as well.

"You're up early this morning," Bix says lightly. A follow-up chapter to Only Ever Just One Night started back when I had epic plans for continuing this, bringing in Cinta and Vel and Luthen, whumping the hell out of Brasso, and having Cassian rescue him. This is just one scene of awkward conversation with tea though.

Oh god it developed Plot. Related to the previous chapter - a bullet-pointed list of things that might have happened in this fic I Wil Not Write (not least as I'd rather just see what happens in S2 first anyway).

It was a sunny day in Batumi... Patchy few paragraphs of the next chapter of Inchoate.

THE LYMOND CHRONICLES

Canon-verse/other AUs

Multiple pieces of follow-up to The next man with a ladder, Danny/Jerott post-canon: It was dark when they rode into the port town... [Chapter 3, basically done, plus most of Chapter 4 but it devolves into broken paragraphs at the end]. "I'm going to the other bed," Danny said in a voice like someone was standing on his throat... [??? there's loads of this written! This is the file where they Get Down To It] Stitch the scenes together [a few paragraphs in which I hoped to make a logical leap from Chapter 4 to fucking, but seemingly never quite got there].

Lymondar saga draft. Actually two files of the abortive first effort at writing a saga AU. I was trying much harder to write in saga style and playing with lacunae in a way that was fun for me but exceedingly nerdy. I think I found the idea more fun than the execution, too.

St Seb. Remember ages ago when I was writing a post-canon 'Jerott gets shot full of arrows and has to admit his feelings because he thinks he's gonna die' fic? This is the file! Some bullet points and some text, some of which I even posted as Sunday sixes way back when iirc.

Fait prosperer qui n'est à croire vain. Fuck me, there's LOADS of this. Pawn in Frankincense/Ringed Castle AU where Marthe steals Lymond's ride with Kiaya Khatun and persuades her they should take over Russia together. Meanwhile Francis is left with Jerott. Hahaha. It kept getting longer because Francis kept trying to escape and I kept finding ways to drag him back, but the 'and now kiss!!' with the two of them behaving in character was just not coming easily.

Francis Crawford's Holistic Inquisition Agency. I wrote this??? One chapter of a Lymond/Dirk Gently AU, where Francis is obviously Dirk and Jerott is a furious/bemused Todd.

She tried every instrument, she redrew every chart. A few short chapters, never finished, of Marthe wrestling with her role in canon and her fate as assigned by La Dame. A couple more paragraphs of a similar sort of thing in Volos.

Malta. Half-arsed few paragraphs of wondering how Jerott would cope with meeting a fellow Knight being imprisoned for sodomy.

Band AU (my 1980s rock band AU for the series, see also @theartistknownaslymond)

Au of an Au. What if, after the Battle of the Bands at Solway, Jerott went to stay at the Edinburgh townhouse for a while and he and Francis got to collaborating in the shed? There's quite a lot of this and it's quite fluffy.

Out out out! The band celebrate Thatcher's downfall. Happy epilogues for everyone! However it's an epic task trying to do all the characters justice, so I was trying to write it as vignettes to match each song on the playlist. Six-ish are written. And earlier draft with plan for characters intercting is in Ding dong the witch is dead.

Jerott/Marthe - four times it just about worked, one time it really didn't. What it says on the tin? aka you just know Jerott has said 'Francis' instead of Marthe at least once when he comes. Only the beginning of the first time exists in this chapter, but I think I explored the idea elsewhere, whenever I dig up that file...

DWTH missing scene. Jerott/OC missing scene from Don't wake the house. Not finished, probably not going to be finished. I think I have enough Jerott smut on the go.

Workshop. Patchy draft of pre-canon Jerott and GRM 'therapy' session in which GRM learns about Francis Crawford and what a hold he has on the boy he thought of as his own plaything. GRM doesn't like sharing.

F/P. Draft of a fluffy kiss prompt someone (@erinaceina? @notfromcold?) sent for Francis/Philippa. Post-canon pregnant Philippa and worried Francis written when it was too hot in summer. It's probably complete enough to post tbh! hmu if you want it posting.

Jerott behaving badly (again). Somehow this ended up in the 'comfortember' section of the notepad, which...no? Maybe it was intended to be originally, but it grew a life of its own. Post-canon, post split-up with the OC, pre-getting together with Danny. Joining the mile high club and regretting it, then ending up crashing at Joleta's (who he meets coincidentally at the airport, NOT who he's screwing in the airplane loo!!). It's meant to end up cathartic, but didn't get finished :') I'm actually really pleased with what I have - post-canon Joleta is so much fun to write!

Somewhere (Google Drive?? an actual Word doc??) there is also loads and loads and LOADS of Pawn in Frankincense band AU around Baron Morgan's place (the Aga Morat), featuring fucked-up Francis/Morgan, fucked up Marthe/Kiaya, fucked up Francis/Kiaya, and bewildered cold turkey Jerott. There's also some Jerott/Marthe from later on.

Other

Crossover. A sequel to my ATWD fic I will shake mountains, where Merab and Irakli encounter celebrity diners in the restaurant they work in: respected musician Francis Crawford and friends take the boys for a drink and share queer/artistic inspiration/history with them. There's quite a lot written but I couldn't quite manage to finish it off.

St Mary's. Another ATWD/Lymond crossover, placing Merab and Irakli among the mercenaries of St Mary's. Mostly bullet points.

3m. Furious that there was no fic for the film Three Months I decided to jot down a scene I wanted to see afterwards. I wrote four lines and cannot remember what my plan was at all.

I'm gonna say something very controversial about the Steddie shippers/community, but before you cancel me please just read what I have to say:

I need to start clarifying that I myself enjoy and ship Steve and Eddie. I enjoy their edits, fanart and fanfiction (I have one work written about them actually). I know that the Duffers weren't expecting them to blow up but I myself believe that they're two characters that have SO MUCH POTENTIAL to be written as a couple.

However, recently I have seen a bunch of post about Steddie shippers talking about surpassing the 8000+ works written under the Steve/Billy tag on Ao3 (They're always acting like it's a marathon. They write things lik: "Come on guy, we can do it!!!")

Listen, I understand where you guys are coming from, because I personally believe that while Billy Hargrove is an excellent written character (as in he's a really complex character) he IS a bad person, an awful person even, the list of problematic things about him is LONG.

So yeah, I understand that you guys want to surpass the number of Harringrove fanfics and put Steddie on top because it's indeed a fact that canonically Steve and Eddie have a better potential of being a healthier couple, an awesome ship.

Still, what's the point of surpassing the number of fanfiction written if the works that are being published under the Steve/ Eddie tag are not viewed as creative and fun works anymore? A lot of you are just perceiving their fanfiction just as a "number", a "target" to accomplish.

If you go through the "Eddie/Steve" tag you'll see that it is clogged with works that are just titles, works that have been improperly tagged, works that people are clearly not planning on finishing, works that are a copy of the previous one (as in it's literally the same story, the same tropes, the same dialogues and same plots with minimum variations). Works that are straight up -Excuse my language- SHITTY.

The fanfics that were written by the Stranger things fandom from 2016 until the first few months of 2022 (wether the fanfic was Mileven, Harringrove, Byler, Lumax, Jancy, Elmax, Stancy, etc) were works of people that wrote them driven by the fact that they genuinely love the fandom, the ship or just writing in general.

I can't tell or classify people's intentions (only they know why they write their stories) but by the way you guys are behaving on TikTok, Twitter, etc. in regards of the Steddie fanfiction it seems like a lot of your are only posting for the sake of posting.

Again, I'm not the fanfiction police or anything but... is it worth it?

Will it be worth it if Steddie has thousands of works under their tag if most of them are objectively a much lower quality than the 8000+ works that Steve/Billy fans have been working on for about 5 years? Why are you putting that kind of pointless pressure on yourselves?

I can testify that most of the Harringrove fanfics are very well written (I'm not a Billy Hargrove apologists, don't come from me) so when Steve and Eddie became a thing I was excited because "Yay! A non problematic ship that involves my favorite Stranger Things character (Steve) is here" and yes, at first it was fun but now that the Steve/Eddie tag is clogged with bullshit & not even half of the fanfics are good it's turning disappointing.

And yes, the Billy Hargrove of the fanfics is super "remixed" to make him less of an ass, but at least those stories are well planned and executed.

Also... The majority of the Steve/Eddie shippers seem to be the biggest Billy Hargrove antis (and I get that, canonical Billy is AN ASSHOLE, he's literally all the red flags in one dude. I would run away from him if I ever saw him on the street) but somehow you guys tend to "Billyfie" Eddie Munson a lot. You guys tend to give him Characteristics and fanfiction tropes that have been given to Billy for years...

Like, why? I find it kind of ridiculous...

At this point I don't know if I want to read more about Steve and Eddie anymore... Or if I do it I guess I'll have to sort from the thousands of awful stories that have been written in the span of months...

Or maybe in a couple of months you guys will forget about this weird behavior and will start writing decent stuff again.

As always, this is MY OPINION. If you disagree that's okay, we can have a civilized dialogue without insulting each other (also, English is not my first language, excuse my mistakes).

My advice as someone who has been reading fanfiction for more than 10 years is: Quality over quantity, guys.

Take your time! Writing can be a very personal an beautiful process, It is DEFINITELY NOT ABOUT NUMBERS, specially not in fanfiction where people are writing not as a job but FOR FUN.

WIP Update

Tagged by @late-to-the-fandom. Thanks so much! This is great, because I've got a hell of an update. Instead of posting actual lines of text, though, I think I'm just gonna blab about the updates I've made real quick. But to the people I tag, do whatever you want. Go nuts!

Update the First:

We have titles now! Working, of course, and I'm still looking to @adrielcastlyre to approve or veto what we've got. These titles are kind of operating on the new-ish idea that we might split our third book in two, since we cover a lot of things in that book. So that's still under debate. And I probably won't use these for tagging purposes until we've got them finalized. Nonetheless, here's what I've got:

P&K 1: Pemoki & Kenacia. May or may not replace the ampersand with the actual word, but I really like the way the ampersand looks in Ovo font, which is what I use for drafting. Centers Catherine and Adriel. You already know the premise for this one. P&K 2: Fledgling's Descent. P&K 3: Stirrings of a Silent War. P&K 4: The Fallen Star of Thaeryvon.

We may also include a spinoff about some of the minor cast of Book 2, but if we do, it's a while away.

Update the Second:

We've finished the first chapter of Part Two of Pemoki & Kenacia, and we've come to the conclusion that our writing style's shifted so much that we need to go back to the first few chapters and edit. So that's what I'm working on currently. I'm cutting a lot of the fluff. So far, the result's something similar in length, but I think that's only because I haven't gotten to the long-winded section about the potato spinner yet, which really doesn't do much except give a sense of setting and reinforce what we already know about Petra and Eva.

I'm thinking I might cut out most of that section and replace it with something more concise.

Update the Third:

We're cementing the arcs and plot threads of Fallen Star. I want to go into more detail about this, but for now, let's just say we're having a lovely time making everyone miserable.

Update the Fourth:

Informally, I'd like to introduce a few characters who actually matter now in a way they really didn't in previous versions:

Do you write in order?

Right, first off. Don't think so? I'll get ideas for scenes within the plot here and there, and try to write them out as I can, but I don't feel much attachment to the idea of working through them only in the order they appear in the Story.

Do you start with something particular?

Hmm... Like above, the first thing I write is often whatever first came to mind which started the idea fo the WIP in question in the first place. I get attracted to writing some major battle, since I mostly do military fiction, or some other short dramatic blurb just to get the idea out there.

How fully formed does your writing come out the first try?

Not at all, yet also yes? I'm pretty crap when it comes to going along with the editing process, so whatever it is I write usually ends up just staying there, as "what it is". It generally means it ain't perfect, but I think it's often good enough, and it allows me to put out a lot of writing on different projects as I jump between them. If I'm ever gonna get more serious about writing, I'll definitely have to pick up a proper post editing habit.

How many drafts do you go through?

Kinda linked to the previous answer, in that once I get the first draft done I generally avoid touching it for a long time. Everything I've posted here on Tumblr, for example, was the "first shot" at writing that particular blurb.

Tell me about your process?

Effectively non-existent, really. Almost anything I've written about, as far as the 12 Worlds is concerned, started off as a piece of the worldbuilding puzzle for me, and most of it will stay there unless and until I decide that I want to see it actually take form. My version of "plotting" for a story is basically just crafting the history of whatever event I'm writing about, then deciding which perspectives and characters I want to conjure up to "give it a face". This doesn't usually focus on, characterisation, relationships, or the like, which might end up writing on the fly, and ultimately all the writing is subservient to showing off some part of the Setting's worldbuilding. Any given event inevitably spawns of multiple writing ideas within it, which is definitely part of the plan. This is why I prefer to write across multiple, seperate perspectives of the action, and in the case of my military fiction both sides of a conflict. The ideas almost generate themselves as I poke and prod around the event in question, and I write whatever piques my interest or comes up.

My #1 post of 2022

Hey there! If you consider yourself a fan of fiction horror podcasts, then I have a recommendation for you!

Spirit Box Radio is about Sam Enfield, who finds himself replacing renowned psychic the Illustrious Madame Marie as host of the Advice and Community Segment, a show for witches, arcanists, and the magically-inclined. However, Sam seems to have no penchant for the Arcane Arts, and in his struggles to be a good host he finds out that the show may be haunted not by ghosts, but by secrets.

The show has the creeping sense of unease of The Magnus Archives, the weird whimsy of Welcome to Night Vale and the LGBTQ+ representation of Hello from the Hallowoods!

If this sounds like something you'd like, then I have good news for you: The show has completed two whole seasons and a third (and final!) one is in the works, but it needs your help!

Just gonna drop this here...

it's a silly little powerpoint with some outfit images on the slides, sorted by date. not complete, dont come for my throat. working on it though!

Edit 23/09: Completed all shows up to today. Would love feedback on any potential mistakes.

Hey op, you make a good point in your post but you might want to reformulate it a little bit..? Because a lot of pro-censorship people using CP are talking about fictional content (like underage fictional characters, etc) and not actual CP, which *is* absolutely banned on AO3. I know it's not your intention at all, but to someone who doesn't know the context, your reply might make it seem like there are real images of real, abused children on the website, when in fact anyone trying to upload any of those is getting banned and reported to the police.

((Oh also if it's ok, if you reply to my previous ask could you please screenshot it and censor the name instead of replying directly? I would prefer not to get harassed by the same mob that is currently attacking you 😅))

no, i won't screenshot this. you chose to send a message to someone who had anon off, you don't get to then dictate what happens to the ask after that. If you think your point is so important to make that you had to come to my ask box where anon is off to make it, then it's an important enough point to keep your name attached to. This response is specifically a response, to you, so, yes, i'm keeping your username attached to it. I will, however, turn reblogs off and not put it in any tags, because this response doesn't need to be spread around, it just needs to be on my blog.

Also, if I'm being attacked, it is news to me. There are some people responding to that post and clowning, but i haven't been, like, targeted, by people disagreeing with it.

The post in question

On to your actual point. The post has over 10,000 notes and is out in the tumblr wild, so i don't understand what you think me editing it now is gonna do about the wording issues you think this post has.

That being said, I was actually really specific about my wording. I used the phrase "CP" a total of once in that post, when i was roughly quoting a post made by someone for censorship: "[i saw] a post literally on my dash of the "if you're not for banning content on ao3 just admit that you like CP" ilk." I never referred to the content on ao3 as CP, somebody else referred to the content on ao3 as CP, that's literally the entire reason i made the damn post.

In my next paragraph, I say that "I do not like and do not want to see underage content," note i did not say CP. I said underage content because underage content is the thing that ao3 has, it's the warning tag that ao3 uses that I use to exclude content, its tag's existence is the thing that people for censorship are pearl-clutching about.

I didn't waste words on the post trying to specify that ao3 doesn't allow actual CSEM, or explaining how the "underage" tag includes a huge diversity of non-pornographic content because i was trying to make a very specific point concisely. The post was about how censorship will only censor the filtering system and not stop the content from being published and viewed on the site, and as such without those filters people will see such content unwillingly, I wrote my post with the focus on that.

Also I didn't waste words because, and I can't stress this enough, the pro-censorship crowd does not give a flying fuck about the semantics of CP vs CSEM vs CSAM vs "Underage", they will use all those phrases interchangeably as though they are all the same thing, they will not admit they're wrong or fix their word usage when someone points it out to them (and many many posts have been made to point this out to them.) So I saw no point in specifying those differences in my post. I'm not going to waste my time hitting my head against a brick wall when I've seen people do the same countless times before and not work, I'm not wasting my time making the same damn arguments on the subject that have already been hashed out to death.

If someone read my post without context, misunderstood what I wrote, and decided to assume they understand the situation based solely on my post without bothering to further look into the subject, that is 100% their problem, and not of my concern.

I’d agree about the body type differences, Phoebe and Hannah are on the skinny (and as someone pointed out stereotypical period heroine) side whereas Ruby’s body type is like Florence Pugh’s which im not sure what the proper term is for. Ruby is shorter than Phoebe a bit but so is Florence, and between them Flo is the one I’d say is closer to Phoebe’s (and Hannah’s) body type so I get what that anon was saying about conventional attractiveness and wishing Fran’s new actress didn’t really fall under that

Thanks for the ask anon! Okay so I've seen this pop up a few times now. Before this ask, it was mentioned in my previous ask and I think that anon may have gotten it from a post in the main tag that I've seen before but for the life of me cannot find it right now. So if anyone sees that post mentioning Hannah not being like Ruby in physical likeness please do let me know in the comments thanks!

I just want to put this out there as a blanket statement: As someone who has always been skinny and not targeted to be ridiculed because of her weight, I feel like I'm not the best person to talk about this. So if anyone else better equipped wants to weigh in on this please feel free to do so!

That being said, here is my two cents: I kept googling the girls and comparing to see what 'different body type' I was missing because honestly the only thing I see is Ruby has a rounder face than Hannah and Phoebe. However, in this full length picture, she's looks to be my height and weight so I'd consider her skinny since her build reminds me of mine.

And to me personally, Florence Pugh is more curvier than any of the three Bridgerton girls.

As Trivia @hptriviachamp has mentioned in our discussions; "While she wished for better body diversity in bridgerton, neither Ruby nor Hannah fulfil that, and she's not gonna judge their acting ability by their looks- and that goes either way." And I feel the same way.

Would it have been great if we got more body diversity via Fran's new casting? Yeah! It would have been great to have a fat actress like Nicola or Barbie Ferreira to portray a character like Frannie. It would definitely minimise the villianising of plus size characters on the show through Penalty at the moment.

But we got Hannah Dodd and so there's no use wishing for someone else. Maybe we could get a curvy or plus size Sophie but we'll see!

My friends and I have speculated that the production team only wants Nicola and Penelope so that the spotlight can be shined on her as the token fat character sigh.

Plus size Sophie works if they’re not following her story in the book exactly. But (for Frannie) as a rich girl and one of the Bridgertons would’ve been perfect for that rep. Even in other countries, back in the day, being bigger or curvier was a sign that you were well off. As for existing rep in the show, we’ll only get Nicola who I hope doesn’t get pressured to lose some weight for intimate scenes. There’s also a problem in any sort of Media that there’s just specific type of Plus size that’s acceptable. I mean as far as “plus size” rep goes and not what should really be fat rep because aesthetically there’s a difference right?  This was an opportunity to show a diverse body type as a “diamond” Hannah is, I’m sure a wonderful actress, and deserves the role but there are definitely actors out there who are just as talented but don’t look like models. If they have an opportunity to recast a role, they should’ve been more conscious of how they could again positively represent a community that is always undermined especially when it comes to “aesthetics”. 

Overall, I'll say it's okay to be sad and wish for more body diversity in the show but I honestly don't think Ruby brought body diversity into the show in the first place.

This is probably my last post of 2020, and I had to take a couple of days to think about this because I really have no recollection of which works were made this year and which ones were made the previous year. 😅

I know which one was my least fave, but the top faves are a bit more difficult. This was a year of great growth in my art for me. I'm starting to settle into a style (starting to! I don't think I've found it yet), backgrounds became more and more intricate... And each piece helped in that in their own way.

I'm gonna have to settle for 5, but just know that this list is likely to change in like 5 minutes. I'm also not counting commissions because that would make this absolutely impossible.

This is a bit of a cheat. I didn't START the drawings in 2020, but since it was completed this year with Fall and Winter, I'm counting it as a 2020 piece. So sue me!

It's always going to be one of my faves, I think. It's the first time I went heavy with the background... I mean, this thing is almost all background. I also forced to work with limited colour palettes for each season which was a lot of fun.

I have Spring and Winter set as lock screen and home screen backgrounds. It works really well!

It is by far the piece I've done that has been the most popular, everywhere I've posted it. And I don't really know why. I guess the number of characters involved? This is by far the most characters I have ever added to a piece. And I have silently promised myself never to do that again. This just took so long, and the poses were complex, and the details, but once it was finished that was such a satisfying feeling.

Even though one of the ideas I have for 2021 involve even more characters. Uh Oh.

We go from one of the most popular to one of the least popular. 😅 But I don't really care, I'm really happy with how this turned out. One thing I really want to start doing is little comics, building up to one day where I can make a multipage  comic on my own, and this was the first step in that direction. Well, technically the second. But still, I'm really happy with this, even if it's not anyone else's fave.

Ah yes, the most intricate background I've ever done. I guess my mindset after "Train Ride" was "Hey, this was pretty hard to draw. LET'S MAKE IT HARDER!"

No regrets though. I really don't have a lot to say that I haven't already said other than working on those screens and the details there was so much fun, I was gutted when I realised some of it wouldn't show because of the composition. But then again, maybe I should have planned it better so they would.

The most experimental one out of all the pieces I've done and... it was an absolute joy to draw this, from start to finish! It's also probably the least popular art piece I've posted, but in this case I kind of get it, since it's so far from my style and so different from everything else I post.

But what can I say? I had a blast! It was a joy to draw! I want to draw more pixel art of fake 8-bit Marvel dating games with these two! I was GENUINELY considering learning some basic programming to make a mini game like this. I have them as mini prints with UV coating around Stephen and Tony and I love them too. This was the most fun I've had drawing anything this year so I had to add it here.

So, once upon a time, I was working in retail and started a series of short comics about retail store idiots (Right here - it’s still online, but pretty much dead (or let’s say, on infinite hiatus)). After a short, but effective depression, I never found the motivation to continue even though I had plenty of ideas to share and characters to present. My job had become a nightmare and I didn’t want to rub salt in the wound, so I stopped, even if I liked that project.

Nowadays, I’m much more into the Miraculous fandom and I wanted to create something to bring smiles to people, even just a smirk, but to make something no one had done before (that I am aware of), but also, something I would be comfortable doing on a regular basis. So, I was talking to my sis @melyxan​ about my previous project, as to what I should do with it, if I should publish it on my second account where I barely have 10 followers, or here where my main account is dedicated to ML content only. So Mel, in her infinite wisdom (*cough*), told me “Why not make a RSI, T&S Bakery edition?”

PAGE A DAY: RELOADED

My previous efforts at writing a page a day have yielded mixed-to-poor results, so I’m starting again with another story. I’m also going to be putting it on my main blog (that’s here) in the hopes that I can get some feedback. To make sure I do it, I’m setting myself some ground rules:

- I’ve got to write at least one word each day. I know it’s not a page, but if I can write at least a word towards it I’ll have done something, and something is better than nothing.

- NO EDITS, not until I’ve finished the whole thing! I have terrible trouble just finishing a story - this time I want to finish, so I’m committing to not rewriting parts of this until I’ve finishing a first draft.

- I’ve gotta post something story-related each day. If I’ve only written one word it’s not gonna make me feel great to post, but I can always write about the characters, the world, the obstacles. So long as I can create a post about the story I can write just a little.

- Keep it fresh. It’ll be easier to write if I’m making it an exercise - practise styles, try different voices, see what works and what doesn’t. Once again, I can’t rewrite it until I’ve written everything else, but it’s a way to keep me writing.

- Answer questions. If any of you have questions about the story as I write it, I’ll answer them. Enthusiastic and interested readers will help motivate myself to write, so please ask questions if you got em!

That’s all for now. Story posts start on Sunday - I’ll be using the hashtag #Stolen Sword to mark them all (if you want to mute it - or read along!). If you’ve not read any of my writing before, some of it is on my other blog, @pageadaytale.

Working title is Stolen Sword, and it’s a fantasy story of dragons, witches, prophesies and dying to save the world.

I have just gotten into the Discworld series, mostly because of Neil Gaiman's love and admiration for his dearly departed friend. I find them delightful and thought provoking. What is your favorite? I've read 4 so far. Also did you read them in publication order, or jump around?

I tend to jump around when I read them, partly because I find some of the early ones difficult to get into but mainly because I love the City Watch books. I'm tempted to say my favourite is Night Watch, but I think I'm going to go for Men At Arms, for two reasons:

1) It's still early enough in the Watch series that Vimes is a plucky underdog;

2) The final confrontation against the villain is a homage to For a Few Dollars More, which is an absolutely brilliant film.

There are other reasons: I like the running theme of "personal isn't the same as important", and Vimes is at his best when he's actively opposing Vetinari's plans (or being not-so-subtly reverse-psychologied into carrying them out). There's some early-installment weirdness from Carrot, but also in this book he gets to demonstrate his cunning and Charisma whilst still policing by the book.

Anyway, I love the City Watch series and I recommend everyone read them bc they're brilliant stories, but they're also the platonic ideal of how policing should work - keeping the peace, rather than acting on the whims of a ruling elite.

Ankh-Morpork: A Peaceful Transition of Power

Lately I’ve been wondering what happens when Vetinari dies.

The Disc still spins, borne ever onwards through space on the backs of four elephants who themselves stand on the shell of Great A’Tuin, the World Turtle, but what happens to Ankh-Morpork?

I don’t think riots, or a power vacuum - Lord Vetinari is too clever by half for that, he’s planned for this eventuality. There will be no struggle, no civil war; there will be a peaceful transition, and the city will continue to work.

My first thought was, “It’s obvious! Captain Carrot will take his rightful place as King!” But I can’t see that happening. For one, Carrot knows who he is and he has no desire to take up that role. For another, a King taking the throne of Ankh-Morpork would be such a world-shaking event that, much like the death of Granny Weatherwax, everyone across the Disc would feel it.

And I thought about everything we’ve learned about Vetinari through the City Watch books, and everything we’ve seen, and another thought struck me.

Who better to take over from Vetinari, than the kid who’s learned from the one who learned from the man himself?

Young Sam probably doesn’t go into the watch, at least not for a long time. It’s not that his dad wouldn’t approve - of course he would, following in his footsteps! - it’s just that it seems... unbecoming, the son of the Duke of Ankh a watchman. And sure, the Duke himself was a watchman, he commanded the Watch! But that’s... different. The Duke’s son should be lounging in carriages and waving to the people, or hobnobbing with the guild leaders at galas; he shouldn’t be skulking around in the shadows on a rainy night, feeling the cobbles through the soles of his shoes!

But Stoneface put his foot down on some things. Young Sam went to a regular school rather than the Assassin’s Guild, And of course it was at his father’s insistence that he spent a year as constable when he was old enough. But the family’s connections become his connections, and suddenly there’s a kid in the Watch who speaks to Lord and Lady Selachii with the same easy tone that he negotiates with Chrysoprase.

And before you know it, there’s a kid in Ankh-Morpork who knows the city better than anyone, and who knows everyone who’s anyone. And more importantly, who knows what makes people tick, in the deepest recesses of their heart...

I wonder if Vetinari realised, when he first made Vimes Sir Samuel. I wonder if he knew he was putting the pieces together to train his replacement.

Ways in which Emma is starting to act like Not Emma™

1. "improbably" and "scudding" feel like VERY old words. I looked up scudding and its peak usage was around 1850, but it recently has started to be used more so this reason could just be a strawman

2. "well it doesn't matter what I thought" as much as we all love Emma implying that she thought he was going to propose, this is so much Tatiana on so many levels. Tatiana has literally said in previous diary entries that her "only purpose in life...is meant to be to find a better last name to replace [Lightwood] with." Emma is a modern woman who, while I'm sure she would love to marry Julian more than anything, probably wouldn't be hanging onto that expectation any time he seems intent on asking her a question.

2b. the fact that Emma just let that thought linger and disappear is a trait that Tatiana might have as the youngest child and only daughter of a family that values sons more. Her language would display more attributes of "powerless language," which discounting her thoughts, especially ones that show she is a woman in love, seems like it would be akin to

3. "I was pretty freaked out he even mentioned BREAKING UP as a concept" I related to this line too much to realize that this wasn't Emma at first. I can't imagine her being this insecure, especially with loving, doting, logical Julian, who would obviously use this as a preemptive statement alone. [Emma just describing the sky at all] feels so... like the way Tatiana writes, she does it as if she's in a movie. She likes to portray herself as the Main Character and in such needs a bunch of outward images to set the scene and give reason for the choices she makes.

Emma, on the other hand, literally would not give a shit about any of that, because, as she herself said, she isn't a writer. Her writing is completely stream of conscious and often goes completely off the rails. She wouldn't set a scene, give reasons, and then follow it up with a logical story arc, as the first paragraph of this diary entry does.

Heyy Tori! Do u have any advice for people starting out writing, I'm considering writing a few drabbles but I never seem to like anything I write ? (also it's tremendously difficult to get characters right) p.s I've never read any of your stuff where the character is out of character so you get an A+ on that and I love reading your stuff so much!!

i would probably say the best thing you can do is not think too much about characterization? it may seem counterproductive, but i find when i’m too wrapped up in would he say that? would she do that? is this Right For Them? it’s so much harder for me to write and enjoy what i’m writing. i know some people like to visualize the character speaking like they’re watching a movie as they write, but i physically cannot do that (i can’t visualize when i read at all) so i just see if i can hear the phrase that i’m writing in the character’s voice if that makes sense?  but again, try not to overthink it and just write. you can always go back and edit things later. 

i rambled so i’m gonna cut it here

another thing i would say is to outline your fic if you’re having trouble. i don’t normally outline drabbles, but if i’m really struggling? you bet i’m making a checklist of events i want to write. it’s less intimidating when it’s just an idea you have to write rather than something you have to come up and write

if you’re nervous about attaching your writing to your username, make a sideblog to post fics under! i will say it’s kind of a drag not having my fic blog be my main blog, because it’s sometimes harder to interact with people and get to know my mutuals, but i do like having the separation (this way i can shitpost about the x files and the people who are just following me for marvel don’t have to see it if they don’t want to). 

i would also say to just let the ideas come naturally, and let them take you in any way they want to go. it’s always way easier to write a fic that i got a random epiphany for over breakfast rather than a fic i’m forcing myself to outline and write, and if you start with one idea and it takes a complete 180, just let it happen. i don’t suggest this, but i’ve literally burned myself cooking because i got a fic idea i was so excited about and i forgot i was in front of a hot stove.

most people are going to be really nice, but i think one of the most important things is to not take shit from anyone. if you don’t want to write something, don’t feel pressured to, no matter what. when you start to write only because you feel like you have to please the hungry masses outside your home, writing isn’t fun anymore. i’ve been writing fic for five years now, and i didn’t think i would ever write again after i left my previous fandom just because it felt more like a chore than a hobby. i’m so glad i started up again with marvel, but i’m always hyperaware of when i might be starting to give too much and i need to take a step back.

also, you seem lovely so i don’t think i have to say this, but just take things in stride. the amount of times that i’ve seen anons come into my mutuals ask boxes and yell at them for only reading “popular” fics is so saddening. i’ve gotten my fair share of it myself. tumblr’s algorithm sucks, and unfortunately the system is stacked against new writers because the tags are super weird sometimes, but it will get better. that’s part of the reason that reblogs are so important, and while i don’t agree with writers who passive-aggressively shame their followers into giving them feedback, i’ve definitely wanted to write more after a fic of mine did well. just keep your head up and keep writing, and people will recognize your fics for the amazing writing that they are.

if you want to get your name out there, join fic events or writing challenges! i wrote my first two fics on this blog for people’s writing challenges! most challenge runners are really good about reblogging all the entries into their challenge, and a lot of time challenges are celebrations for a good number of followers, so a lot more people may see your fic. i’m gonna shamelessly promote my own writing challenge here, and if you want to join but you’re not sure if you’re going to go through with it, you can always claim a prompt anonymously and then it doesn’t matter if you post or not because there’s no pressure. also i will reblog every entry into my challenge and comment, because the the first fic i posted on here i only got a like from the challenge runner and you know what? i’m still a little bitter about that because i damn well liked that fic 

also on that front, sometimes there are fic events like exchanges going on that you can join. not all of them accept xreader fics, but some (like the bingo events) do i think. i also run an exchange (it’s like a secret santa event) specifically for marvel xreader fics twice a year. but just doing an event like that might get you more comfortable with writing too!

I’m merging your asks since they are similar. Here be my recs:

For raunchy fics, you should definitely check out works by @i-got-these-words (Ao3 link). Those are very well written and feature unabashed steamy fun. They also have a series of short drabbles that are written based on requests here. My personal favourite is Huaxia – a historical/fantasy AU that incorporates the elements of Omegaverse; I’m not a big lover of A/B/O but that fic happens to be one of the few that I truly find enjoyable. I Am Not A Prostitute by traceytries is another well-known work that features sexy stuff in every chapter, so you might check that. 

If you dig both explicit stuff and angst, @agapaic aka powerandpathos is your person. Beings is a very explicit, BDSM flavoured fic that keeps both HT and MGS fairly in character. Sleeping With Roses is one of the most Tianshan fics that paradoxically doesn’t feature He Tian; it’s extremely gut-wrenching and beautiful. 307 is another mature fic based on an official OX illustration; despite the rating it’s much deeper than it appears. Other than those I would definitely recommend checking out their more demure fics. The writing is beautiful, and quite British I might add, haha. Sweet Tooth is one of my favourite fics of all times, period. REM and Water on the Bridge are excellent character studies. If you enjoy AUs, you should probably check Nothing’s Gonna Hurt You Baby for its flavourful 30s setting. 

I have already mentioned @nightfayre ​ in my previous ask. I greatly enjoy their writing style – it’s quite poignant and evocative. Their fics are chiefly softer and do not feature as much angst as those by powerandpathos. Hook, Line, and Sinker is the most recent fic, and it’s absolutely brilliant. I would also recommend reading Fire and the Flood, which is a Pacific Rim AU.

Another writer I would like to recommend is @notthatiwilleverwriteit ​. Apart from the relationship, between HT and MGS, their works also focus on the supporting characters. The Cycle of Sunflower is a great reading choice.

As an afterword, I don’t really read FF.net or Wattpad, so I can’t give any recommendations regarding works there. Also, there are many authors who post their fics on tumblr, so you just have to watch the tag frequently.

(1/2) Y'know I want to be a writer, but school sucks. Everyday we have these homeworks and projects(that I do during weekends/free time). I can't allot a time for writing a fic. I feel like shit, everytime I read fics I just feel insecure like how am I gonna do this/that when I can't even free my time for that dream. Also, I have to maintain my high grades as to not disappoint people and myself. I'm exhausted, but I can't just abandon things like that.

i’m not sure if i’d be able to give you useful tips with regards to finding time to write. i, myself, am struggling to manage my time now that i’m studying again.

honestly, months before i started this blog, i felt insecure as well. my grammar sucks compared to other writers in this platform. i don’t use fancy words, i suck at writing description, you know things like that.

but before i completely drown myself with negativity—that i couldn’t write fics that would be enjoyed by others or that is well-written—i took a step back, and started to plan and imagine how i wanted my blog to look like.

[shokugeki no soma spoiler] it’s like what soma did when he failed to capture the guests’ attention during their activity in totsuki hotel—the one where he made souffle and only managed to sold (?) 8 plates at first. he took a deep breath and pictured out what he needed to do and what he needed to do in order to pass the test. and the first thing he do is showing off his skills to a kid, and presenting her the food.

that scene from the anime is my inspiration before starting keiyoomi. my previous blog sucks and flopped immensely at first. i thought keiyoomi would fail as well since i only have 14 followers before. 😅

anyway, you are free to write whatever you want in your own pace. it’s totally up to you whether you’d like to post or share long fics or ficlets. as long as you’re having fun, then you’re doing great.

also, i’m not a very creative person myself. so, i sometimes use dialogue prompts available here on tumblr. just don’t forget to credit the sources. 😅

lemme add the things i did with this blog in the past few months (for pointers, maybe?):

wrote some of my stories without editing it, only to rewrite it for a couple of times until i’m satisfied. [farewell, mr. almost, ver. 3 and paalam]

started a mini series filled with ficlets that barely reach 200-1000 wc. [hq!! characters with babies, potato omelette]

still trying to write something despite feeling burnout. some are enjoyable, but there are those that flopped, but who cares? [tag: #keiyoomi: does impulsive shits]

this are some of this things i could maybe share with you. ah! and before i forgot, please try not to write your fics directly on tumblr. there are times when the app is down and your hardwork might perish into nothing. you can use wps, or word, or google docs in writing your first drafts/rough drafts.

also, um. . . some other tip? maybe this part is directed to myself?

don’t focus a little TOO MUCH of your attention to the imperfection of your writing. polished story is really great, but if you’re similar to me who tends to um feel lost while trying to write a “perfect story,” it’s probably best to remember that having a rough draft is more important because it is easier to clean up a messy draft than start from scratch. idk.

write as much or as little as you want. i’m pretty sure nobody’s checking whether or not you’ve a reached a certain wc. and you’re writing for free. you’re writing free stuffs. come on. just enjoy writing.
