I love you bad art, I love you amateur art, I love you self learning, I love you cheap art supplies, I love you journals, I love you crafts, I love you art available for everyone, I love you second hand art and objects, I love you free museums, I love you handmade gifts, I love you childish drawings, I love you art that nobody ever saw except for the artist, I love you taking time to learn a skill, I love you art history, I love you free tutorials, I love you art as a school subject, I love you things that took a long time to make, I love you art studies that are considered useless, I love you the human need to create and change the world around you to be more beautiful and more meaningful.
I hate you AI art, I hate you generated content, I hate you singe-use images, I hate you mindless consumption, I hate you stealing from artists, I hate you reposting without sources, I hate you lying about using AI, I hate you pretending like art is something unachievable and reserved only for the chosen ones.
Make art!! Make "bad" art that is actually special because you took the time to make it. Make art for yourself that you show no one. Make art for others that they'll cherish forever. See how your whole world changes, see how you start noticing beautiful and inspiring things all around you. Make things with love and devotion. Fuck AI.

Reading and Response #2
The thing about internet art is that it will be forever changing and evolving due to the continuous advancing of technology. From "Web Work: A History of Internet Art", it discussed the term 'net.art' as an accident more than a direct coinage of the vast ways art can manifest itself online. "Agents of Change: The internet. Net Art and How the World Wide Web has Created a New Medium" talks about that very concept regarding the definition or parameters of net.art, highlighting the difficulty of defining because the spectrum of the internet is so wide. I like how this article listed six features of net.art as identified by Baumgartel: connectivity, global reach, multimediality, immateriality, interactivity, and equality. I think these features describe net.art in a way that encapsulates the complexity of the internet and the controversies on what is considered art. In "The Digital Canvas: The Odd and Fascinating History of Internet Art", adds on to this because net.art is unbounded by galleries, museums, and exhibitions, meaning that everyone who has access to the internet has access to net.art.
I also think that internet art has different expectations compared to other forms of art making like traditional painting or drawing. Things on the internet can be trashy and can be 'low quality' simply because it is on the internet. GIFs do not have to be the best quality because the message can still be communicated. In "How GIF Trash Became Internet Culture Glue", it emphasizes this because GIFs and GIF culture does not exist within a limited single space, but rather communicate and evolve with technology and media. For instance, in "A Brief History of Animated GIF Art, Part One", GIFs are not always made with artistic intent and platforms like MySpace in 2003 harbored GIFs that exchanged messages, relatability, politics, and memes. All of these articles attempt to fathom and define internet art and GIFs, and learning about the history of these things is necessary when understanding the future of them. I use GIFs in text messages to capture everything I am trying to communicate, and it was interesting to learn about the artistic implications and applications of GIFs.
Tumblr media
This GIF is simply hilarious. It is funny taking an icon like Walter White, who has nothing to do really with trans rights, and connecting it to exactly that.
Tumblr media
I reference Drag Race memes and quotes all of the time. It has incorporated itself in my every day vocabulary.
Tumblr media
I love GIFs that capture amazing moments in animes and shows. Just one clip of this anime entices people to watch the whole thing.
Tumblr media
This GIF is from the youtube series DHMIS (Don't Hug Me I'm Scared) and it is a take on media targeted towards children and how it can be corrupted. I do this dance move all the time.
Tumblr media
I like the idea of taking a still painting that has so much nuance regarding the meaning, and giving it more emotion, character, and personality through animation.
Tumblr media
I appreciate and take part of the art form of makeup, and I love how this GIF captures the transformation and expression that makeup creates.
Tumblr media
The beauty, grace, and pure artistry of a cat eating corn.
Tumblr media
One of my favorite things is Kermit memes, especially the low quality ones that make it significantly more funny.
Tumblr media
Any internet art interpretations of Gorillaz is very interesting and cool because Gorillaz is an animated internet based band.
Tumblr media
Vanelope was surprisingly one of the first things I thought of when reading about glitches. The fact that her character was discarded and not given value because she glitched almost perfectly reflects the standards of art and the controversy of the quality of art especially surrounding glitches.

My Pace-#1-Staying Feisty With Stray Kids
Welcome to My Pace, a series of articles about the different K-Pop music and songs that have changed my life and perspectives over the last 2 years.
For this first installment, I'm going to be talking about what Stray Kids does for their fans and how they helped me through more than one rock-bottom.
Tumblr media
Read On Medium
The funny thing about rock bottom is you don’t realize you were there until months later.
By the time September of 2021 rolled around, the rock bottoms seemed to keep coming. My hip injury was drawing out unresolved for years. People around me were growing impatient. I wasn’t nearly recovered from my surgery, I had no source of income, and my mental health was about as solid as Casper. My relationship with my mother had become strained.
Now, I had to move out of the house she owned.
I know it all sounds very cruel, but I am a grown-arse adult after all. My mom was trying to do what was best for our relationship and future.
But even so: I was scared.
While I had built the best support system I could, there were a couple of ingredients missing. My other bands were between comebacks, and my family had little to offer in the way of support. Through most difficult times in life, music is all I have.
Enter The Kids
Stray Kids get a bad rap for no real reason.
But they are a loud, feisty, and brave group of young men.
To get through this life transition with my mental health intact, I was going to need some feisty.
My relationship with Stray Kids and their music has been feisty from the start. I started listening to their music out of spite. When I grew tired of the fan wars raging on Twitter, I decided to listen to Stray Kids. I wanted to know if all this talk about “construction music” had any footing.
As it turned out, Stray Kids had those two missing ingredients that I needed: that feistiness, and EDM.
I Know You Know Lee Know, But Do You Know EDM?
I had listened to Stray Kids songs before and didn’t much like them.
However, I have a long history of hating something at first exposure, only for it to become one of my favorites things. (hello Cat & Dog by TXT). So I was open to giving them another chance.
I listened to NOEASY a few times on a long car ride. What I found was a diverse, passionate, and satisfying mini EDM album.
EDM has always been one of my favorite genres and I’d recently been finding the American scene defunct. (Exhibit A: several “Best of 2021 EDM” Spotify playlists feature Blackmill songs that came out ELEVEN YEARS AGO)
Stray Kids filled a musical void I’d been missing. What these people were referring to as construction music, I realized, was EDM.
Electric Music Masters 3RACHA
Not only that, Stray Kids were doing it better than most artists in the genre. When I realized that the album itself, NOEASY, was a clapback to the people insulting their music, I knew Stray kids had me.
Say it out loud―noeasy, noisy. An earlier song, God’s Menu, has literal construction noises in it, and they bang pots and pans in the music video. This idea of taking the negative thrown at you and transmuting it into art was aggressively inspiring to me.
Deciding to go My Pace
I won’t make any crazy claims about Stray Kids defining their own pace when it comes to their careers. But I do believe in the statement of their song “My Pace." I think they operate within the confines of their career at the pace that works for them, as best they can.
What I mean by this is the volume of music they produce reflects their mentality towards their art.
Stray Kids know the best way to become incredible music composers is to make as much music as they can.
The Stray Kids song “My Pace” is an encapsulation of what this era of my life meant. My 20s were ending, I was dislocated, and facing the reality that I had to start defining a career for myself.
“There's no need to rush, my pace
Don't compare yourself with others
It's okay to run slower
Just follow my lane, my lane
Take it easy
Just look ahead and run
You ready? Let's go
I don't know where my destination is yet
I don't know
I don't know how I'd look like at the finish line, I want to know
But for now I run on the road ahead of me, I'll decide later
Until then, I'm not looking at others
Don't forget my speed, my lane, my pace”
Time to Run, Time to Rest - Chan’s Room
Stray Kid’s leader, Bang Chan, hosts a weekly livestream pretty much every single weekend. During Chan's room, fans can tune in for updates, questions, and see who’s pick-up lines can make him blush the hardest.
For the lost and lonely, the stray if you will, his weekly sit-downs are a lifeline. When I moved out of state, away from every security I’d ever known, Chan’s Room was a lifeline for me. Wanting to tune into the security and inspiration he provided every week was part of my motivation to start defining my own freelance work schedule.
Not only that, but his dedication to this weekly livestream taught me that going your pace doesn’t mean being lazy or lackadaizical.
Going your own pace means pushing yourself hard, but taking that break when you start to feel the gas tank get low. When he doesn’t have the energy, he tells us honestly, and we wait for next week.
The Hellevator Up From Rock Bottom
Without going into heavy detail, I hit several more rock bottoms through the course of that next year. The roommate situation not working out, my cat being sick, me being even sicker. Ultimately I had to bail and move back to Maine for mine and my pet’s health. This led to being jobless and homeless for over a month. At risk of sounding like a pity party, I faced the reality that all the people in my life I thought I could rely on failed me.
Except Stray Kids.
I can’t even tell you how many nights their songs got me through. Ballads like “Star Lost” and “Gone Away” spoke to and softened my loneliness. Songs like “Mixtape: OH” and “Sorry, I Love You,” fed me the love I felt I was lacking in my life.
These songs calmed my nervous system and put me to sleep when pills wouldn't.
This high-energy rag-tag group, literally known for being so loud their practices have interrupted other group's vlives, who antis accuse of making horrible, low-quality construction music, swept me up with their gentle voices and carried me through nights I couldn’t go to the hospital because I had no insurance and no money. Nights that once again, something was very wrong inside me and doctors couldn’t tell me what.
I had already learned awhile ago that life tends to be one hurdle after another. Just when you think you’ve finally risen up and found your voice, something in life tries to silence you again. Stray Kids taught me that sometimes, you have to get loud about what you need. You have to be feisty enough to protect yourself and your family.
Feisty enough to fight for the life and success you want, even if no one else wants you to have it.
Especially us stray kids who don’t have a lot of people to lean on.
Stray Kids Everywhere All Around The World
I’m well beyond the idea that these music groups are “just boy bands.” Especially in the context of the pandemic, groups like BTS, Stray Kids, TXT, and Twice were present for their fans, in a time where most people could barely get out of bed in the morning.
Stray Kids are a group who go to great lengths to stay connected to their fans. I feel their love it every time Chan turns on the camera on Sunday and gives Stays their “big hug” goodbye at the end. I feel it every time Felix posts one of his weird voice messages on Bubble. Every time Changbin offers a word of encouragement, or Seungmin serenades our aching hearts, or Hyunjin freestyle dances for us to show us his progress.
The members of Stray Kids have experienced rock bottoms themselves. From physical and mental health struggles to Bang Chan’s lonely trainee days to the battle that was the Kingdom competition. But they keep going, they stay feisty, and they stay loud.
And every time I think I couldn’t love them any more for it, I find I do.

WIP Thursday
i know this was supposed to be wip tuesday, but it got lost in my likes and i have been dead. anyway lol i was tagged by @themarcspector to talk about wip stuff. rn i don't have really an excerpt or anything because i'm on a break, but i do have some vague notes in my head about some of the characters from slasher, and what may be in store for them later.
this is a vague outline for a scene i was thinking about yesterday.
Some of the girls sit on the back porch smoking.
Roxanne: There's something wrong with this town.
Phaedra: I hear that.
Roxanne: It's like it's cursed. Rotting from the inside out.
Zelda: I'm from here you know.
Phaedra and Roxanne stare at her in surprise.
Phaedra: You're from here? Here? How?
Roxanne: Yeah, you seem weirdly well adjusted considering you live in like murder central.
Zelda: It's just a front, y'know, survival. If you act like nothing bothers you, nothing can touch you. But...I don't know how much longer I can do this.
Zelda looks down at her hands.
Zelda: Back in high school my girl...snapped. Her stepfather was abusing her and she just couldn't take it anymore. She dressed up in a clown getup, got a razor, and started carving up creeps all over town. It was in all the papers.
Roxanne: Jesus.
Zelda: She confessed to me, right before she got caught. Not because she felt guilty. But..I think maybe she thought if she didn't explain why, I would think she was a monster for what she'd done. That I'd stop loving her. Which I guess to her was worse than being locked up.
She's in the mental hospital now. I go visit her whenever I can.
Roxanne and Phaedra are crying. Mascara tears flow down their faces.
Roxanne: Oh God Zel...
Phaedra: Promise me something.
Zelda: What?
Phaedra: Promise me you'll get out of here.
Zelda goes to protest.
Phaedra: Promise me. Zel, you can't keep living like this. Your girl is not getting out any time soon, okay? You need to live your life.
Zelda: But I can't just abandon her!
Phaedra: Then visit! Fuck Zel, this place will kill you. You hear me? It. Will. Kill. You. You can't see your girl if you're dead!
Zelda storms off.
Phaedra covers her face with her hands.
Phaedra: Fuck...
Roxanne puts her hand on Phaedra's arm.
Roxanne: Hey, it's okay. Let her cool off for a while.
Phaedra: I'm just scared. For all of us. I keep feeling like something's on its way.
Roxanne stares off into the distance.
Roxanne: Yeah...me too.
so there's that. here's a little bit of backstory on the others:
- barbara, linda, sidney, lisa, and veruca are all from salvation, texas. (linda didn't really run in the same circle, so she didn't meet them until they ended up in the rental house at hell's gate u. the others were all on cheer squad together in high school. barbara and sidney decided not to do cheerleading in college, partly because they just didn't feel like doing it anymore, and because it would force them to spend time with lisa and veruca.)
- manny is from nyc.
- linda's family was possibly abducted by aliens.
- linda and janet met on a greyhound bus on the way to college.
future stuff:
- zadica's paintings try to come to life and kill people. (i just want to preface this by saying she and michelle leave after they graduate and zadica becomes an accomplished artist and michelle works in an art museum. so they'll be okay, i promise.)
- i haven't really figured out everyone's majors yet, but i think it goes:
Sidney - mechanical engineering
Michelle - art history (maybe?)
Zadica (Michelle's girlfriend) - studio art
Lisa - doctor (i know it's vague, i'm sorry)
Olivia - film

Annabeth' Backstory...
I'm here to say that Annabeth/A-chan finally got a backstory! ✨
Warning ⚠
It contains implicit self harm
Mother issues approach
Low self-esteem sometimes
If you're sensitive about this themes, don't read. You're warned...
...
It was a beautiful baby. Hair as blond as gold, eyes as blue as diamonds, skin as fair as snow, and a little face so rosy, it was impossible not to fall in love with that baby. Even her laugh was infectious. Everyone in that family felt ecstatic when they found out that she was born healthy and strong.
The years went by and Annabeth d'Auvergne grew up. With grace and beauty. Her tastes were developing, her opinions and... her talents. At just 3 years old, little Annabeth was already scribbling papers, whether they were important or not. As she grew up, her talent evolved. One day, her parents decided that she should meet her friends. Little 7-year-old Annabeth — dressed like a little princess — was taken to the company of her parents. Annabeth comes from a wealthy family that even with money, were having difficulties in their company. Few ideas, did not sell. It seemed that everything was going to go downhill... or was it?
Little Annabeth was sitting at a table with her parents, a small group of men wearing suits approached and greeted them, but Anna didn't take her eyes off her small sketchbook for nothing. Her pencils spread across the table along with crumpled papers. One of the men in suits felt strangely drawn to the doodles the child was making with such passion. So much so that when he was willing to try to pick up one of the crumpled sheets, a pair of small hands stopped him by taking the paper.
— I'm sorry if this old uncle scared you. — He smiled. — I saw that you draw a lot, can I see? Please?
Anna was afraid. But when her father's hand touched her shoulder, she relaxed and handed him the notebook. They were doodles, yes. This he could not deny. But what he saw went beyond mere scribbles. Art. Made with colored pencils and colored markers, both with worn ends and some even tiny from being used so much.
Alice, her mother. She seemed to recognize what her co-worker saw in that notebook. They would argue about that some other time. Months passed and the same men went monthly to visit little Annabeth and see if she was getting better quickly or not. She even got gifts. Tablets, materials from a professional, even a drawing table she got. They invested in courses for her, private tutors, classes on the history of art. They were creating an artist. She was going to be one. She should be one.
When Annabeth turned 12, a plan was proposed to her. She was going to do drawings for her parent company, as a joke. She would receive salary too, but she would still have to study. At first she saw it as a great opportunity. She would help her family and her parents' business! A great idea, correct?
. . . correct?
Still at the age of 12, Annabeth began to notice that her life would not be as happy as she dreamed. Her drawing deadlines were tight, she needed to redo more than once if they didn't like the idea and in the future she would do animations for commercials. The weight she felt on her shoulders was no small one. One night, while Magnus — Annabeth's father — was walking through the corridors in the middle of the night towards the kitchen, he saw a strong light coming from under his daughter's room. When he opened the door, he was horrified. It was his Anna, his little Anna, sitting on the floor with her digital drawing pad on the table and an awful lot of coffee mugs around her. Dark circles under her eyes were more than visible, they were glaring. How long has it been since she slept?
No matter how many times he complained to the company, the deadlines didn't get shorter. Annabeth was starting to go through hell. But it was still going to start, it wasn't even close to ending.
"Severe insomnia". That's what she had. Annabeth didn't sleep more than five or six hours a day. Per week. Per month? And if she took medicine, she got the rare minimum eight hours of sleep. Anna began to stop caring about the outside world. She didn't go out for walks, walks, nothing. Not even her hair made a point of combing. She didn't leave her house. Her relationships with her family grew closer. They didn't talk like they used to anymore. That's when they stopped at home. Magnus still tried to make any communication with his daughter while he was working, but Alice was too busy. Even for his only daughter.
Annabeth changed drastically, now it wasn't "visits" to the hospital anymore. It was practically another house of hers. Maybe she scratched herself too hard? Maybe she should give up the insane amount of coffee she was drinking? Maybe she should stop taking so many sleeping pills? Maybe she should eat better? Maybe, maybe, maybe. She questioned. Whenever her mother's eyes fell on her. They hurt. Like knives. The glow that Annabeth had died. Annabeth wasn't Annabeth anymore.
The bandages no longer left her body. The bandages on her face, the bandages on her arm. Nothing seemed to go away. Neither did her blonde hair. She was already starting to hate the color, she remembered the woman who had brought her into this world. But I can change that, right?
No matter how much her screams filled her head, her ears were numb. Her head down hid the tears that insisted on coming down. But even so, she didn't regret what she had done. It didn't matter how much her mother screamed or how much her father tried to calm her down. Anna was happy. But that happiness would make her life worse. Too much.
15 years. The age she is now. Her life didn't make a point of getting better. But it's not like she cares. She just had to survive a few more years until she was 18. Then she would decide what to do. Until then, it was just being her. Annabeth d'Auvergne, the girl who dyed her hair white and only went out to parties when it was related to her "work".
This was how she would live. Until she stopped breathing. Or is it not?
...
Wow that was a story, wasn't? Now, allow me to say what, and who inspired me to create Annabeth or A-chan for the closest people ;)
One day I was in Twitter and I saw this image made by Avogado6
Tumblr media
At the same time I saw it, I fell in love with it, the way he did. The lines. The color. Everything. Then I thought, "What about I made an character with this?" And poof! A-chan started to exist. Her personality is based on mine, and you might not understand her story at first, BUT if you want to ask something about her, I would love to answer your questions don't matter how complex or simple they are.
And yeah, that's it XD I hope you guys enjoyed this. Take care!

like. listen. as an artist i get why so many artists feel so morally opposed to the use of ai art generators, and are also scared of how this will tangibly affect our future careers. i 100% get it, i do. but just cause i get the emotions behind it doesn't mean i agree.
i think it's a knee jerk reaction at best, and outright Actively detrimental to art and artists in the long term at worst. my previous reblog has a lot to do with laws, and you may say "laws do not equal morality" and i agree with That so WHY in god's name is the proposed solution of the anti-ai side sTRICTER LAWS??? BAFFLING to me, honestly.
"well it's not REAL art! / Learn to draw!" congrats! you've officially reached the point where you're trying to constrain and define art, which people have tried to do throughout the wrong side of history, and is - if we bring this back to morals - an extremely unethical stance to take, especially for anyone that wants to work towards a fair and open society. at this point you're also probably regurgitating a lot of hate that gets thrown at, for example, collage artists.
as for how this will effect careers in the short and long term...who knows! i've got a fee thoughts and predictions, but no solid answer for this one. i'm not clairvoyant and i'm not an economic analyst so i can't say. however, i very much doubt it's the oh so horrifying future of All Robot Artists everyone is envisioning. i think a larger degree of automation is inevitable, but that applies to pretty much every line of work. and it isn't a "problem" of automation itself, but rather a problem of how our capitalist society expects us to still work to survive while...providing less work and/or not paying enough for the work we actually do.

This is incredible to think about because like. An alpha Zoroark would be so incredibly scary and dangerous and then you have those two scrawny kids (clearly would have died in the wilderness if left alone without their pokemon) that are not scared at all somehow and they're like "oh yeah that's kind of our mom :)" at which point you have to accept that somehow your life is insane now and you should just get over it.
Also do the people of Hisui think the twins are, like, creepy or something? Because of the whole Zoroark thing but also I can't help but think that there might have been tales and rumors about twins in Hisui? Like... "oh if you have two identical children it means one of them is a Zoroark" or something? Which uuuh wouldn't be helped by the masks. And they're so good with pokemon and strong which is SUS. And also Ingo and Emmet are so clearly neurodivergent which I think wouldn't be very understood in Hisui. Like... Are there rumors about the twins? Like "they're actually two Zoroarks who got stuck in human form" "they're actually ghosts" "they're corpses animated by the Alpha Zoroark to creep people out" "they're golems created by a god" "they're a new kind of pokemon that just looks human"... Things like that? Idk... Or does their oddness just gets sweeped under the rug of "at this point we just have to accept it"? Like they're just weird. Discovering another weird thing about them is like well just yet another weird thing lmao.
I'm clearly more invested in this au than I thought I was..... Sorry I guess? Wasn't expecting to get so attached.
(also, I really really like your art. It's awesome and seeing Zoroark with the twins just looks incredible?? You're really a great artist!)
I'm glad you're enjoying the au skghg it's the most self indulgent thing that's stuck to me and I love it
It's the Peal Clan who tends to have the most interactions with them, followed by Sabi and whatever Galaxy Team members that are brave enough to actually make it to the Alabaster Highlands and there's all sorts of stories that go around about the twins. I like to think that Unova is the region that's most superstitious about twins (considering the history of the Twin Dragons and such and I have my own mini hc that with both the submas twins in Hisui, the region is kind of. Freaking out. Just a little) but I love the idea of Hisui having it's own superstitions, especially with how different people's relationships were with pokemon in that time. Ingo and Emmet have cryptid status, which they absolutely do not help with their mannerisms (also I love the hc about them speaking Unovan/English while Hisui is in Japanese and only professor Laventon can really understand what's going on with them), but honestly it's more their adopted Zoroark mom that scares people away than anything they do or say.
They become sort of like the rift where they're this weird mystery that people get used to and just kind of avoid until the protag shows up and is charged with investigating the strange zoroark family that live in the caverns under the Bonechill Wastes and they get to find. Literally just a pair of kids from the future who really, really miss trains

-Lowkey competitive and a perfectionist, he needs to get ALL the trophies and achievements but he enjoys the game and plot first
-Shuichi and Maki literally have to force him to sleep cause otherwise he stays up all night playing games
-If he had to pick a fave genre it'd be action games, fighting games or racing games
-His phone ringtone is the Super Mario Bros theme song
-Kirumi, aka mom™, always scolds him for slouching and corrects his posture
-Constantly browses the interwebs for new or rare games/consoles/merch/etc he doesn't have yet (someone help this man and his bank account)
-He has rows upon rows of games and don't even get me started on all the consoles he owns
-Besides playing videogames, he likes watching gaming documentaries and movies (especially the movies)
-His fave one is probs Wreck It Ralph and he cries a lot during the "I'm bad and that's good, I will never be good and that's not bad, there's no one I rather be but me" volcano scene
-His lab is literally designed after an arcade
-If he plays games with his friends he will literally only let Himiko, Gonta, or Chihiro win, the rest will get obliterated into next week (not even his sidekicks get the special treatment)
-He will fight you if you think yourself a superior/true gamer just cause you play action packed games and hate on people who play "cutesy" or chill games
-He ALWAYS has a handheld console and does not go anywhere without one
-He got scouted by Hope's Peak when he won a fuckton of gaming competitions
-He always commissions Rantaro for artwork of his game characters
-Likewise he always commissions Sayaka for character costumes he wants to wear for cons (everyone is talentswapped so Rantaro is the ultimate artist and Sayaka the ultimate cosplayer huehue)
-His hoodies are sacred and so far he's only let Shuichi wear them
-He started a gaming club in the school and they meet up every Friday to chill, play games, and have friendly tournaments
-"Press f to pay respects" is his mantra
-He happens to like outer space a lot since he would always stargaze with his grandparents
-Hence why he automatically loves any game setting in space (cue Rainbow Road being his fave course in Mario Kart)
-He can probably tell you the history of gaming from the creation of Spacewar and Tennis For Two to the modern day in one sitting but he literally goes like 👁👄👁❓ for a sec tryna remember what he had for dinner last week
-One of his future goals is to create his own videogame
-Loves interacting with people online/through multiplayer, he has an endless amount of virtual friends

Browns 50: A Conversation With Zawe Ashton
Tumblr media
Zawe Ashton has worn a myriad of hats in show business — as a film and theatre actor, director, writer and late night TV host. Her career, which she began at just six years old, is multilayered and transcends traditional categorization. The London-born polymath boasts leading performances on Fresh Meat, Netflix’s Velvet Buzzsaw, the Broadway play Betrayal. Her own play, For All the Women Who Thought They Were Mad, released in 2019, addresses the rampant cultural bias faced by Black women in the healthcare industry. The powerful drama feels more important than ever in the midst of the global Black Lives Matter Movement. Armed with a passionate drive and love for her art, along with a refusal to adhere to the structural limitations of race and gender, Zawe is only getting started. Fresh from the Browns 50 shoot, she tells us more.
What are your first memories of wanting to act?
I started when I was six. I knew when I started acting classes that I wanted to do it for the rest of my life. The Anna Scher theatre classes were based on respect and integration. Learning about poetry, history and the world was just as important as crafting ourselves as actors. I’ve never let go of the activism instilled in me there.
You’re also a playwright and screenwriter, and the author of Character Breakdown. Can you tell me more about the writing aspect of your career?
I started writing and reading poetry in my teens. I fell in with a group of artistic people in college. Instead of clubbing, we’d write rap and poetry. I won the title of Youngest UK Slam Champion when I was 17. Later, I began integrating writing into acting. I realized there weren't enough scripts for people who looked like me at my school. That’s when I wrote my first play, and from there, everything came.
Your play, For All the Women Who Thought They Were Mad, released in 2019, is about the Black female experience confronting racial prejudice in health and pharmaceutical institutions. Can you speak on that — given the play’s ongoing relevance in light of the BLM movement?
I wrote it aged 25, and for 11 years no one wanted to put it on. It’s about Black maternal mortality, cultural bias, and Black female relationships that exist without a dominant caucasian character. People were scared to put it on because they were unfamiliar with the wider context. Now the mortality rate for Black women in the US is a hot topic, but people dying isn’t a hot topic. How many Black playwrights and screenwriters are waiting for the times to catch up with their experiences?
Your first novel, Character Breakdown, is a fictitious memoir about a Black female actor. What are some challenges you’ve faced as a BIPOC in entertainment and how can future generations overcome those challenges?
There’s a spectrum of different types of aggressions and prejudices. When I started acting, I’d be asked to come to set already done-up, because they didn't have people willing to do my hair and makeup. It was the same for many BIPOC actors. The trailer is this peaceful rite before going on screen, and POC get robbed of that. It has lasting psychological effects. In 2020 there are still models and actors calling people out.
I’ve also been yelled at in meetings about my artistic property. The question is, would this be happening to a white male counterpart? I don't think so. Both my play and book are about cultural bias, micro AND macro aggressions and the white male gaze. When we keep writing and talking about it, we make the next generations aware of their strength.
How does costume affect you as an actor? And what are some of your favorite TV and film fashion moments?
Costume has a huge effect on me as an actor. If I'm wearing the wrong shoes, I find it hard to fully embody the character. One of my breakthrough moments was the creation of the character Vod for Fresh Meat alongside June Nevan and Janet Horsefield. Vodd’s style embodied every era of fashion — ‘90s rave, ‘80s punk, afrofuturism, with some ‘70s psychedelia and Grace Jones-esque androgyny. The most stylish films are from the ‘50s and ‘60s Italian neo-realists, and the French Nouvelle Vague. Even an alien from outer space would see how they dressed and think they were iconic.
How does your style change according to where you are? Do you dress differently when in London than in NYC?
I'm incredibly affected by my environment when it comes to fashion. The American and UK styles are so different. We’re more experimental and confrontational here. In the US, things can feel a bit more… sexy and normcore.
Who are some designers you love?
I still wear designers who supported me from the beginning — The Vampire’s Wife, Stella McCartney, Erdem, Tom Ford, Christopher Kane, my friend Roksanda... It's nice to support people who also support me. Fashion can be kind, it doesn't have to be harsh.
What are some upcoming projects you’re working on?
I’ll be shooting The Handmaid's Tale in Toronto. I’m a Margaret Atwood fanatic and Elisabeth Moss is incredible. Talk about iconic fashion on that show… I’m also finishing a couple of screen projects and there could be a new book beginning to bubble up...
Zawe wears dress by Khaite from our exclusive Browns 50 Designer Collaborations.

I love Ryan Murphy's shows but with all the Lea Michele stuff coming out, RM should be exposed next. So much problematic things he did - some, I'm learning now and some, I've made up excuses in my mind before. And I am confused about Darren Criss. Is he problematic? Did he apologize for some of the shit he said? And I'm coming across some discourse about RM grooming DC. I mean I read something about this back in the Glee days but I did not believe it. Now that the world is aware about grooming and abuse, and that DC worked for other RM projects, is there a correlation somewhere?
In the past few years, I have become disillusioned by how much of my role model artists, fictional characters and people I know irl turn out to be disappointing. I guess, they are only human and no one is perfect and perhaps I should stop stanning literally anyone. I can admire artists, fictional characters and people I know irl but maybe it would be better if I stop putting people in a pedestal. No one is that perfect. I should set my expectations of people and life to really low so I won't get hurt that much and if they do something really nice then I'll be surprised and glad.
Thing is I would still like to watch RM's shows. They make me feel seen and validated. I can separate fiction from reality, suspend my disbelief but it's also not right? Supporting people who make other people suffer. It is a moral dilemma. At this point in this dystopia of a life and a dysfunctional world, I'm tired, scared and I only have a few good things to believe in. Even then sometimes I just want to curl up in a cocoon. But life goes on whether I join or I hop off, and maybe I should continue to try to be better and I try to make the world a little better.
The pandemic 2020, all the things that people do to hurt each other, the consuming feeling that I am trapped in my life, are making me lose hope. Life gets better in small ways. As Fitzgerald said in The Great Gatsby, " So we beat on, boats against the current, borne back ceaselessly into the past." It has to be towards a better future tho. We can still try. While creating positive social change can be directly done through legislation, we can also create positive change through art and education. Sometimes I feel like there's no point at all and sometimes I feel like we can still create positive change as evident in history and as actioned by people who are fighting for equality.
In uplifting news, Lili Reinhart came out as bisexual. It's nice to have another positive representation, until well... I shouldn't really stan anyone anymore.

oh my gosh, I want to hear ALL your NY adventures!:D They sound intense and dramatic ! (also it's true NYC isn't really representative of the US, it's...NYC XD , I PROMISE other Big Cities even art different, but!! I really want to hear your Culture Clash experiences!) I'm glad you've come back in an arting mood and the play was fun!!
Tumblr media
Our adventures were intense, but mostly because we’re kinda dumb spaniards. We decided the subtitle of our trip was “Panic and Stress™” because holy macaroni we were confused half of the time.
Also I want to apologize to every person I talked to while I was there because I Forgot How To Talk every two seconds. Like, I understood everything they told me but my mind was like [……..] when I had to reply.
I’ll leave some stuff that happened in the read more but this post was getting really long, so I might make a part 2 in the future!
Well, first things first: I lost my dignity right at the JFK airport. We had been flying for eight hours straight (I read The Princess Bride, which was very fun!), from 7pm (in spain) to 9pm (in nyc) and… have I told you I’m deathly afraid of heights and the ocean? Well, I was on a window seat while we were flying over the whole freaking ATLANTIC OCEAN and it was nighttime the whole flight so everything was PITCH BLACK except for the plane wing and I WAS SO NERVOUS but my friends were very kind and patient so I didn’t panic a lot. Just a little bit. You know, the normal amount.
And, to avoid getting killed by jet lag, we tried to stay awake the entire flight (I think I was the only one that managed to do it, tho. Just this once: thank you, insomnia!) but when I got to the security thing my tired, tired mind forgot languages existed and I made a fool out of myself. But everything was fine because the man asking me (way too many) questions decided I was a danger but only to myself (or that i was simply Stupid™) and let me go.
Tumblr media
Beetlejuice was really really fun! The people working at the theatre were the nicest, the actors/actresses were amazing and I had a great time! (except for the part where I thought I lost my phone and panicked a lot) I loved loved loved every part of it but tHE LIGHTS AND THE STAGE WERE SO WELL DESIGNED LIKE- I can’t even.
We also visited the Museum of Natural History (one of my friends is a big dinosaur/fossil nerd, so she became our makeshift guide) and the Museum of Modern Art (here I was the makeshift guide because after all I’m a Fine Arts graduate and also a huge Art Nerd). I found my nemesis (Picasso) there but also lots of artwork and artists that I had kinda forgotten existed since I finished college.
Tumblr media
[Also I rediscovered I have a serious case of Baby Face™, because 90% of the people my two friends and I talked to tought I was Their Child (they’re older than me but not that much) so there’s that too. I’m baby, I guess.]
Some cultural things people warned me about but I really didn’t think they were serious (also don’t take this very seriously I’m a Small Town Girl (living in a lonely wooorld) just pointing random things I noticed):
People driving madly, like they were on a Fast & Furious movie (I was very very scared oh my god)
People not giving a shit about anything (but I’ve seen that in Madrid and London too so I guess it’s a Big City Thing?)
People shouting at the top of their lungs in the middle of the street????
We ate a lot. Like, A LOT.
Also, coffee. It’s kind of a meme where I’m from that people that aren’t from spain/portugal don’t know how to make good coffee (i’ve been to other places in europe and can confirm) but in NYC we truly tasted what it’s known in spain as aguachirri. I was so, so, so watered down. It tasted like dirty water
That, and the fact that we couldn’t find a Bar like the ones we’re used to in Spain (where you can order beer/liquor or a coffee/tea or soft drinks (and also tapas but that’s a thing for another day) at the same time and it isn’t weird). Everything was either a café (Starbucks everywhere) or a pub, with no middle ground.
Every other big city I’ve visited had a… “historic district”, I think it’s called in english???, but NYC had this kind of modern vibe everywhere we went
This is gonna sound very very strange, but the sidewalks were very… errrh… plain, I guess? I’m used to sidewalks having tiles or a pattern (like this or this)
There were screens and ads everywhere ??
People not recycling at least plastics???
But most of all, what really confused me was Taxes and Tips
Taxes as in having to think that something will be more expensive when you go to pay for it
and Tips as in I’m dumb and having to make a percentage of something and then add it to another number shuts my mind off and my head cannot process it like ???
Both of these basically mean: I’m Very Stupid and Math Will Be My Ruin Someday
Aand that’s everything that came to mind now, but as this is getting kinda long I’ll save some anecdotes and more “Me Being A Dumb Foreigner” for part 2 :D

Yeaaah! Nice to see your requests are open :) Can I ask for a matchup ? With a boy ~ I'm 23 years old, basically small (1:58cm), brown long hair and green eyes. I'm an independant woman, and I really enjoy my freedom. I'm kind though, and I really love to cuddle the people I love when I feel comfy enough. I got artistic vibes, love to write of course, but also dance. I love history and travelling a lot ! I have a weird humour and I'm always teasing my friends ! Thank you wedding magician!
Wedding magician?? You are too precious, Mad!! I love you dearly, and I hope you enjoy your matchup! x
Your match is…
Sabo
Tumblr media
Sabo loves an independent woman. Given his career choice, he can’t really devote all of his time to doting on his partner (though he really wishes he could) so he finds it easy to be with you! You are so comforting and reassuring when he has to leave you for a lengthy mission, he really appreciates how easy you make it for him because he’s upset enough as it is, and if he knew you were upset too it would just crush him. He has duties to fulfill, being the Revolutionary Army’s Chief of Staff, but you totally respect that and he just adores you for it. Your love of freedom reminds him of his love for justice. He’s working hard to make a free world for not only the people of the world, but also for the two of you!
He always promises to you that once the war is over, and everything is as it should be, he’s going to take you everywhere around the world with him. Show you the places he’s visited and was dying to show you and also experience new places with you! He loves adventure much like you, and though your relationship is grounded now, he can’t wait to provide a fun, thrilling future for the two of you (and a family perhaps?).
Your kindness to loved ones and even strangers is really what won him over. He can be a little hot-headed once provoked, but your calm and collected personality really keeps him level-headed for once. Koala especially thanks you for that! He’s a bit impulsive, so he needs you to be willing to go with the flow sometimes. Your life together can be a bit sporadic, but it’s never boring to say the least!
Sabo is a big ‘ol baby when it comes to cuddling. After coming home from a long meeting or a tedious mission, he’ll walk through the door of your home, come up to you without saying a word, and just wrap his arms around you. Sabo loves to give great big bear hugs, he never holds back on his affection for you! His favorite time is laying in bed with you, you pulled snug against his chest while you play with his wavy blonde locks. It’s so relaxing and peaceful, so different from the missions he has to endure. It almost always makes him fall fast asleep! Speaking of, he is a major cuddler during bed time, so clingy and tight! You’ll wake up in a mess of tangled legs, his snoring face in your neck, and his arms secured around you. It’s like he’s afraid you’ll disappear if he lets go.
He really adores your artistic side, as he destroys everything he touches lol Sabo is not artistic in the least bit. The only thing he is capable of doing is carrying a tune (not a bad singer, but not that good either) and whistling! (I HC Sabo as a really good whistler - that takes talent!). He loves to read your work if you’re willing to let him view it. He’s not the best at feedback though, as he just loves everything you write! Dancing is another talent that Sabo somehow possesses, all thanks to you. It took quite some training, but Sabo can now ballroom dance with ease! He loves to put on classical music and just dance with you right there in the living room. Though, he really prefers to watch you dance and sway your hips on your own though…all for him *wink wonk*.
Your appearance is really endearing to him, he loves the height difference! Sometimes you get mistaken as his little sister and he laughs his head off every single time, much to your annoyance lol But, in all seriousness, he’s seen many eyes before, but none ever quite like yours. Green is such a rare eye color, and he reminds you how beautiful and unique you are all the time! Behind closed doors, Sabo is very open and affectionate, never scared to tell you how he feels or what he thinks about you. In public, he can be a bit more distant, but only because he has a reputation to maintain. If you’re ever craving and missing attention when out in public, he’ll always make up for it later in your bedroom
Your teasing nature is enjoyable to him because he is very teasing as well. He gets a kick out of you messing with Dragon especially, because that is a hard man to crack, but you somehow always make him smile, even if it’s a little one! You both love to pull pranks together on fellow Revolutionary members. You two are like best-friends who are completely enamored with each other. Your relationship together is fun-loving and light-hearted!
Other potential suitors:
Killer - Despite his ruthless pirate tendencies, he is really drawn to kind women. Your sweet personality really eases the tension he’s always under from dealing with such a rambunctious captain. Like Sabo, he really appreciates your independence. He’s really not in the right state to provide and take care of you just yet, so you being okay with some alone time really assures him in your relationship. He’d hate to leave you all alone if he knew it truly bothered you. He can also be really cuddly when you ask him to!
Hawkins - Hawkins is really interested in your artistic and love of history/culture side. He finds your creativity mesmerizing and he loves to read your works. Together, you two create lovely paintings, pictures, stories, and many other art forms! Unleashing his creativity and artistic side with you really puts him at ease and it’s great bonding time. You two like to visit foreign places, studying the history/culture of the areas. He’s also a really good dancer!
Ace - He really just finds you all around an enticing person! Your sweet nature really makes him feel better, especially when you assure him that he is loved when he really doesn’t think so. He finds your artistic side really cool and he likes when you include him in your projects! He will gladly give you genuine feedback and help you in any way possible. This klutz seriously can’t dance, so he prefers to watch you do your thing! He’s also major cuddly, so you accepting his affection is definitely a plus!
