Fort Worth ex-police officer Aaron Dean shot and killed Atatiana Jefferson in front of her 8-year-old nephew after a nonemergency call about an open door in her home.
The door was open to get smoke out from burned hamburgers. Dean claimed self-defense.

-  Mohammad Gorjestani and Even/Odd, “1-800 HAPPY BIRTHDAY” (2022)
In 2020, working closely with impacted families to center community aesthetics and “inside-out storytelling” that allows them to tell their own stories, Gorjestani developed 1-800 Happy Birthday as an audio website that invited the public to record and listen to voicemails that humanize and celebrate lives lost to police violence and systemic racism.
The current exhibition features 12 upcycled NYC payphones, which ring periodically with voicemail messages from family members, friends, and strangers, to serve “as monuments, beacons of love.” Each booth, designed by New York artist/designer Paige Hanserd in collaboration with the families, is decorated with flowers, Mylar birthday balloons, bodega candles, and snapshots of celebrants.
“I want you to leave this place committed to do something,” Rev. Johnson [mother of Oscar Grant] urged the audience, which included George Floyd’s brother, Philonise, who had happened to be in New York and heard about the exhibition.
“He came in and asked if George had a booth,’’ said curator Klaudia Ofwona Draber. “We explained that we don’t do a booth unless the family is involved.”
Philonise Floyd came back for the panels, nodding along to Rev. Johnson’s words: “We need some to stand in front of us and others to walk beside us.”

Schalliol found nearly every demolished North Side building he’d photographed had been replaced within 10 years, while most on the South and West sides were left as vacant lots.
Redevelopment was swift in predominantly white neighborhoods, while it was almost nonexistent in others, Schalliol said. Chicago’s infrastructure “continues to be defined by structural racism,” Schalliol said.
“Divestment, both public and private, have produced these outcomes and vacancies, which hurt neighborhoods of color,” Schalliol said. “On the North Side, we see buildings that were perfectly fine demolished to make way for new ones. On the West and South sides, buildings are demolished when it’s the last resort.”
I wish I could say I was surprised, but there's a ton of lots in the west and south that are still vacant and undeveloped decades after the riots and fires that followed the murder of MLK Jr.

As I watch conservatives across the nation banning books from James Baldwin & Toni Morrison & even outlawing entire subjects & fields of study like AP Black History, I’m reminded of how mainstream it was only a handful of years ago for people to insult the idea of trigger warnings: an effort that had nothing to do with a government-sanctioned book banning & would be no different from listing the potential disturbing elements similar to what already exists in films, TV & games. Back then just the suggestion of trigger warnings was enough to send conservatives into a blind fury railing about “PC culture running amok” & “Liberal snowflakes want to censor everything that hurts their feefees!”. Yet here we are in the present with conservatives straight up banning books at a state level, targeting teachers & librarians that stock or provide such books for fines & potentially worse, & outright attempting to federally outlaw whole academic subjects & their related texts (Queer Theory, Black History etc.). And the irony only grows since the blatantly close-minded bigots & willfully ignorant conspiracists leading these efforts specifically justify their crusade of ignorance & regression by claiming it’s in the interest of providing “safe spaces” for cisgender white Christian children.

gotta be honest, i really loathe the concept of "school-appropriate" on a fundamental level, especially now that i'm a teacher, and a music teacher at that. like, of course i get where they're coming from, but it's such a bullshit idea in this day and age. kids are aware of and exposed to much more than ever before, and they're not fucking stupid. i hate having to maintain this veneer of purity and cleanliness to my kids, because everyone knows that's not actually the case on either side. so many of my students listen to music that i simply cannot discuss with them, much of which I LISTEN TO MYSELF, without the fear of disciplinary action for myself or for them.
rap and hip hop, for example, are huge among many of my kids as you might imagine. i'm perfectly aware of the subject matter often discussed within their playlists, and even though i greatly admire and respect the artists making the music and understand many of the cultural and historical elements surrounding the genre, the conversation basically ends there. as a music teacher, that is incredibly heartbreaking. it makes the kids feel like their interests are somehow invalid because it doesn't meet the "gold standard" of the entrenched eurocentrism and puritanical practices which still persist and permeate every aspect of american education today. and make no mistake. when i was a kid, i was listening to, watching, and playing some truly vile shit, so i can only imagine what it's like for kids today. fuck, man.

Interestingly story and the consequences of defining “Blackness”. The pretzel logox of racism is based on white oower.
The solution not discussed in the podcast is the DNA test for the mitochondrial gene identifican of race meaning your Mother ‘s DNA would determine your race. This would truly define the race of children in a definitive manner. Now I will let that this purculate until that coffee is done.

"For years, studies from around the world have shown systematic racism blocks access to healthful lifestyles and appropriate healthcare among consistently marginalized groups — particularly people of color. Despite this, decision makers have done little to address these inequities."

I don’t usually post a lot from the specific news channels I watch on YouTube but I was just struck by how this short features the emblematic issue with the current conservative war against “woke”. This guest is literally in the same spot that DeSantis’ goons in Florida flopped into when they tried to end the career of a liberal judge they disparaged as “woke”. When held to account these conservatives will ALWAYS trip over the specifics because “woke” to them only exists as a scare word. This guest attempts pathetically to say “it’s too complex to define in a short time” when the people who are actually woke & proud to be so explicitly know the definition as being aware of the ways governments, institutions & societies have & can fail, oppress & disenfranchise certain people for neutral aspects about themselves whether that be race, gender identities, disabilities or even level of income & advocacy for changes to the status quo to increase equality & equity for marginalized groups. In the disaster of an attack from DeSantis’ fascists I mentioned before, even they ended up having to give a similar definition when pressed because there wasn’t really any escape from that truth. In this clip, the guest also tosses out a pitiful & completely disingenuous lie that woke Is to “create hierarchies” as though the things wokeness opposes such as income inequality, racism & white supremacy, sexism, misogyny, xenophobia, transphobia etc. aren’t explicitly hierarchical issues plaguing our society based on nothing but hate, disdain, ignorance & apathy towards people not considered the default, outside of the status quo, or simply not “worthy of consideration”. Honestly, any & every time the word “woke” is venomously spat out by conservatives & out & out fascists like Trump, DeSantis & their ilk, the immediate response should be to cut them off & demand that they define it. Because, in the same way we’ve allowed them to frame anti-fascism as a negative thing in the eyes of so many people, their regressive projects only advance when we allow them to redefine reality & lie about terms that explicitly already have a definition.
