Kids First Always - July 5th, 2022
During my years in field of education and over the last nearly ten years of working with families in the mental health field, too often children struggle with mental health issues that stem from choices completely out of their control.
A strong co-parenting relationship reduces the stress of children and provides comfort and security that every child deserves. When parents choose to work together for their child, they can balance the responsibility of parenthood by having another person to discuss issues with and rely on which can help to reduce their stress too.
Tumblr media
In my role as a targeted case manager, I continue to try and share positive examples with many co-parenting households some basic tips that can benefit their children over health. In fact, some research indicates that children from successful co-parenting household often are more likely to be successful in a career and even have lower divorce rate as adults.
Some research answers more positive outcomes from coparenting:
Children that see parents respecting each other often have higher self-esteem and learn social maturity.
The child will have better relationship with each parent.
Successful coparents never put the child in the middle of conflict; this can lead to mental health struggles and difficulties outside the family.
Coparenting makes things easier for others that are in the child’s life, teachers, caregivers, extended family, and friends.
When coparents communicate well, the child will learn social skills such respect and cooperation that they can carry with them throughout their life.
Children can experience first-hand courteous and effective problem solving through effective co-parenting, which will serve them well in their future.
Children can learn organizational skills they can carry into adulthood.
If problems arise with the child, work together to resolve them. If you choose to battle it out, never do so in front of the child. Negative thoughts may arise, please do not bad-mouth the other parent in front of the child. This can cause doubt and resentment toward that parent, which can lead to anxiety and unnecessary stress for the child. They may begin to question and doubt one and even both parents. If a child can’t trust and communicate with their parents, they will seek for that comfort elsewhere that could lead to self-doubt and detrimental relationships.
As society continues to have more non-traditional households with both parents living in one home, we need to always keep in mind to put the child first. Children did not ask to come into this world, we created them, therefore it is every parents’ responsibility to do their best to care for their child and put their well-being before themselves, significant others, or current love interest. After all, you created this child so you should do everything in your power to make their live the best it can be, by always putting the child first!!

WIP Wednesday
Since I gave you a taste of my work in progress for the Dafoeverse fics I've been writing last week, I decided to give you a dose of what I have written for the Molinaverse fics that have been put on indefinite hiatus.
Because I love yall, I appreciate your patience with my ever changing phases (like I'm the goddamn moon), and I've left you on read for far too long.
Tumblr media
Also, side note, if any of you have suggestions about how I should go about continuing any of these WIPs, please let me know in the replies, my ask box, or DMs. Thank you! 😘

Covert Affairs (this one goes out to @freddiefredfive)
Tumblr media
Rafi was talking to Donnie when they walked back in and Leo was nowhere in sight. Kazia figured he was back upstairs with Jeanine, so didn't think anything of it.
But the remaining brothers were talking and laughing loudly and didn't even notice that Tadeusz and Kazia were in the room until Rafi noticed the young woman.
He was staring offly hard with his big brown eyes that perfectly complimented his baby face and reddish cheeks.
He looked like Leo, but had skin as smooth as a baby's bottom and his hair was curly and styled nicely on his head.
Kazia could immediately tell that he probably thought highly of himself, since the threads he was wearing were of high expense and quality.
"Well, hello," he said seductively before he realized that Tadeusz was standing next to her.
Tadeusz scowled at him before he nervously laughed and put his head down.
But next thing he knew, he was grabbed by his collar by the older, taller, stronger man.
"Kazia's mine, got it?" he angrily said before he plucked his head.
"Yeah, yeah. I was just playing, buddy. You know Layla is my girl. I love her so much...I just wish she wanted to marry me..."
"I don't care," he sternly said. "Now, let's have a chat."
He dragged the poor young man away, much to Kazia and Donnie's horror.
"You like them rough, huh?" Donnie teased after.
"Not usually," Kazia admitted before pushing a strand of hair behind her ear and blushing. "But Tadeusz is different."
"If you say so," Donnie moaned.
Meanwhile, Tadeusz brought Rafi to one of the backrooms and threw him down before he closed and locked it behind them.
"Who's that Rudy guy?" he sternly asked.
"Tadeusz, do you have history with him or something? Why do you care?"
"My punching fist might be out of commission, but I'll use my other on your pretty little face if you don't answer what I asked you!"
"Okay, okay," Rafi flinched. "He's just a friend of mine. Well, actually he knew Layla first. They have mutual friends and when she introduced him to me, I knew he would be a perfect fit for our familgia."
"Oh, I see," he softly said as he paced. "So we don't even properly vet members anymore. Oh, silly me. Now, tell me Rafi, why do you think you can trust him?"
"I mean I am a good judge in character."
"Yes, Layla is a lovely girl," Tadeusz sarcastically said. "But you really aren't cut out for this life. What would you do if your brothers' lives were snuffed out...one by one? What if you had no one to hold you hand?"
Rafi was about to reply before Tadeusz cut him off again.
"Because I was once naive like you. I thought seeking quick, easy money would be heaven in Belarus...but it wasn't. I was betrayed many times and every time it became harder and harder to take their lives away," he coldly said.
"Until it wasn't anymore. It was just something that had to be done. You cross me, you die. It's as simple as that. So I say all of this to say, Rafi, you better watch that Rudy fella or I'll be forced to take both of you out, painfully...very painfully. Got it?!"
"Yes, of course."
"Good, glad we had this talk. Now come on. You didn't properly introduce yourself to MY Kazia."
"Right," he moaned as he trembled while getting up.
But Tadeusz just yanked him again and brought him back into the room by his arm. He dropped him again and the young man fell so hard it made both Donnie and Kazia jump.
"Hello, Kazia," he greeted. "I'm Raphael Scaglioni, but everyone calls me Rafi. Nice to meet you."
"Nice to meet you too," she softly said as he got up.
She shook his hand and then he went over by Donnie.
Kazia looked at Tadeusz confused, but he just put his hand on her shoulder and kissed her cheek.
"Nie przejmuj się. Chciałem tylko zapytać go o Rudy ' ego." (Don't be alarmed. I just wanted to ask him about Rudy), he told her. "Rozumie tylko siłę." (He only understands force)
"Nie jestem zaskoczony," (I'm not surprised), she replied back. "On naprawdę wydaje się trochę przytłumiony." (He really does seem a little dim)
"To dlatego, że jest." (That's because he is)
"Prawo." (Right)
"Everything alright, Tadeusz?" Donnie asked as his little brother still hid behind him.
"Yes, everything is fine," he softly said.
Donnie didn't believe him though. He only spoke Polish, usually to himself, when he was angry or frustrated around them. Kazia nervously giggled before her stomach started growling.
"Sorry."
"No need to apologize," Tadeusz assured with another kiss on her cheek. "Well, if you would excuse us, I'm gonna take Kazia back upstairs to eat and meet Layla."
"Of course," Donnie said before they both headed back up the secret staircase behind the replica Trevi Fountain.
The secret door closed by itself behind them once their feet touched the hardwood floor of the cafe and when it did, it startled Marla and Layla. They both jumped before they both smiled at the young couple.
Tadeusz and Kazia smiled back but Kazia noticed that Jeanine and Angelo weren't there anymore.
But there was one customer at one of the tables by the painted Union Jack that was munching on a croissant while watching videos on their laptop.
This person was wearing noise canceling headphones, so they were completely unaware of what was going on around them.

Jealousy
Tumblr media
"I don't know what I want to wear," Alice whined as she frantically looked through all of her clothes hanging up in the closet.
Her husband, meanwhile, was sitting on their bed, just watching her.
He began to worry that she was gonna have a panic attack again, so he tried to lighten the mood.
"I don't see why you can't wear what you have on now. You look gorgeous."
Alice giggled.
"Thank you, Aldie. But I want to make a good first impression and an red and brown plaid overall skirt and creme shirt just isn't gonna cut it," she said. "I want to wear something a little fancier."
"I don't see what the problem is. We met Rodney before and in overalls."
"I know, but he has Shaye with him. I do want to start making some friends around here."
"She's no friend until I vet her," Alden grumbled.
"Of course," Alice quickly agreed. "I trust your judgment."
The way she said that made Alden worry again since she sounded like she was about to cry. So he got up and walked over to her, rubbing her shoulders again to comfort her.
"Alice, it's gonna be alright," he whispered. "Although we are safe, I still can't help but be cautious. I don't want anyone to hurt you the way he did again."
"Oh, Alden. It isn't that. I just...even far away from home I still feel unsafe. I hate that I can't just trust people anymore."
"Not all people are untrustworthy," he said before he moved his hands down to her midsection. "Just take a deep breath."
Alice did as she was instructed and as she did so, she suddenly felt herself being picked up and brought over to their bed.
She kept her eyes closed though and allowed Alden to put her down on the middle of the bed.
"Keep deep breathing," he instructed before he hiked her skirt up and slowly took her panties off.
Once discarded, he began to softly kiss her inner thighs before he finally went for the kill. Alice was still trying to keep her deep breathing up during all of this, but then her breath hitched as soon as she felt his tongue inside her.
She, at first, gasped before she got her breaths back up and began to deep breath again. Her heart was beating so fast in her chest as her lover kept going, teasing an amazing orgasm out of her. She tried to hold it back and tightly gripped the sheets below her, but eventually she broke and loudly moaned as she climaxed.
But she didn't just climax, she also squirted a little which amused her husband. She could clearly hear him giggling between her legs, before the sound of joyous slurping invaded her auditory sense.
"I'm sorry," she nervously apologized.
"Don't be," he whispered before he kissed her lower lips. "I haven't gotten you that excited in quite some time."
She giggled.
"Yeah, I haven't had that reaction since before...the first time...he appeared..." she realized before she started to cry. "I'm sorry, Aldie. I just...I just..."
Alden immediately picked himself up and grabbed Alice before he held her in his lap and began to sing to her again to calm her down.
"It's alright, Misu. I won't let him hurt you. I won't let him get near you ever again."
Alice didn't respond, she just kept crying with her head nudged on his shoulder. He gently rubbed her back, still singing a little to her.
But as he sung, his mind went dark...real dark.
He knew he would gain so much joy taking away the life of the man that hurt his wife so. But he had to stop himself.
He had to.
He couldn't risk going to jail. It wasn't worth it.
But yet, it felt so inticing. It felt like a sure fire way to get rid of him once and for all, but he knew Alice would be against it. It was her battle to fight, after all he was her old flame.
She never wanted to put Alden in the middle of this, but now here he was. Here he was miles away from the place he used to call home, consoling his anxious and brow beaten wife in their so-say dream home.
The man took everything from them. So was he in the wrong to want to cause him the most harm he could?
He still kept his singing up, well until Alice stopped crying and moved her hand to his cheek.
He just looked at her before she leaned over and kissed him.
"I love you so much, Aldie," she softly said.
"I love you too, Misu."
She lightly smiled and was about to kiss him again before her phone began to ring.
Alden kissed her cheek and reached for the phone that was closer to him before he handed it to her.
"Hey Nick," she greeted. "What's up?"
"I just finished watching your first local interview," he started. "I love the storefront. It's gorgeous."
"Thank you," Alden smugly said. "It makes a perfect bookstore."
"It really does. Nice taste, man," he said with a laugh. "Also I can't believe Lori Amato is your cousin."
"That's what I'm saying! I was fangirling a little too hard. But she's so nice," Alice chirped. "His whole extended family is so sweet. They've been nothing but friendly."
"Well, I'm glad to hear that. I also see that you have a lot of new fangirls, Alden. There are a lot of thirst comments on this video."
"I don't see why. I'm not the stern Dr. Bertanelli of Middleburg University anymore."
"So," Alice huffed. "You're still handsome and fine as hell and these girls agree with me."
"You're not mad?" he asked.
"Why would I be? I don't get jealous like you do," she joked. "They can say whatever they want, but at the end of the day, you're sleeping next to me."
He chuckled and kissed her nose.
"Also, I noticed that the amount of views and comments on our first video with Alden performing with us as Java Joe's has gone up by a lot."
"Really?" they both asked.
"Yep, really. We also have a lot of returning reviewers to our second performance with Alden. Most of the viewers are from Navassa, of course."
"Wow, well maybe we'll have to get the band back together...for the sake of the fans," Alden said.
"I'd be down. I'm sure Quinn would be too. Adam's a father now so it might be a bit difficult and then Mitzi and Maisie have their own band, Ungaii, now but maybe I could intice them."

Ring Around the Rosie
Tumblr media
"Dinner's ready!" Sabrina called from the stairs while Otto and the actuators were setting up the dining room table and bringing the stew and the freshly-baked soda bread to the table.
As soon as Flo placed the last fork down, Rosie came down with Mallory in her grasp, while Margaux clung to her free arm.
She was giggling with them which made Sabrina smile before Rosie put Mallory down for both of the girls to greet their mother.
They both hugged and kissed Sabrina, then ran to the table and took their seats.
"They're such wonderful girls," Rosie told Sabrina as they walked to the table together.
"Yes, yes they are," Sabrina chirped before she took her designated seat.
Otto led Rosie to her seat while Harry cut the bread and Flo and Moe helped scoop the stew unto Margaux and Mallory's bowls.
"Daddy," Margaux asked.
"Yes, Rosie Posie?" he answered back while he took his seat, watching as Flo and Moe went ahead and put the stew in the adults' bowls too.
She giggled.
"What's this?"
"It's Irish Stew and Soda Bread," Otto answered. "Thom Donaghue's recipe."
"Who's that?" Mallory asked.
"My father," Rosie excitedly answered with a big smile, making the girls giggle. "And your father learned the recipe and now he's able to make it for us."
"He's never made it before," Margaux admitted.
"I wanted to make it for Rosie. To welcome her back into our family," Otto explained.
"It was my favorite meal my father would cook for us," Rosie added. "It was also the first meal he had with my parents. He was so nervous to meet them but then he and my father bonded over Tolkien."
"Who's Tolkien?" Margaux asked.
"He's a wonderful author. He wrote fantasy novels. His literature was a great escape for me when I was younger."
"He wrote The Hobbit and Lord of the Rings," Rosie added. "Are you familiar with those books?"
"I didn't know they were books. But I know of the movies," Margaux answered.
"Otto, you need to get them into the books," Rosie nudged. "Have I taught you nothing? They love literature. I'm sure they wouldn't mind sharing your love of Tolkien with you."
"How many books did you read to them upstairs?" Sabrina suddenly asked.
"Just three. But they are so inquisitive and curious. They're two bright little girls. Well advanced beyond their age."
"Thank you!" they both chirped.
"Would you be interested in learning more about Tolkien?" he asked them.
They both nodded, so he said, "Well, alright. Guess we're gonna be taking another trip to the library."
The girls both cheered.
"But until then, we can watch The Hobbit tonight if you would like. We do have Family Movie Night on Fridays. And Rosie, you're welcome to watch the movie with us."
"Where can we watch The Hobbit?" Otto asked Sabrina.
"We have a subscription with the parent company of our SmartTV. You can rent it or buy it on their website."
"Oh, well guess we have our movie for movie night!" he cheered.
Rosie giggled after taking her first bite of the stew.
"Otto, you really outdid yourself. This is really good."
"Thank you," he said with a genuine smile.
"You're welcome," she said before taking another bite.
"I suppose he used to spoil you too with his cooking."
"We would switch nights to cook, but when it was his turn. He always blew me away. I'm not surprised though. Maria was a wizard in the kitchen. She always had the best side dishes at my family's parties."
"Maria was close to your parents?" Sabrina asked Rosie.
"Oh, yeah. After his father died, she would come around all the time. We loved having her."
"How nice," Sabrina cooed.
"Sabrina," Rosie started. "I must say I love the way you decorated this home. Otto told me you picked out most of the decor and I'm impressed. Also I love the crushed flowers hanging on the walls in the guest room. It just takes me back to our old apartment and my old office at the university."
"I figured you would," she said. "We actually bought those for our old apartment when it was just us two. Otto told me how much you loved crushed flowers so I decided to get them since I love them too."
"My mother and I used to make scrapbooks of different flowers we would find around the yard," Rosie started. "I would pick them and show them to her before we would crush them and add them to the book."
"Small world," Sabrina chirped. "That's what I used to do with my grandmother back in Atlanta."
"No way!" Rosie chirped. "Well, now we have another reason why Otto fell for you."
"I guess so," she joked. "But wait, are you from NYC?"
"No, no. I'm from Rochester but moved to NYC when I got accepted to Columbia University."
"Oh, gotcha. I'm from Atlanta originally, but moved here to pursue my dreams of being on Broadway. Of course my dreams changed when I met Otto and especially when we had the girls, but I love my life. I wouldn't change a thing."
"Glad to hear it," Rosie said. "It's funny because my dreams changed too when I met Otto on those steps. I was planning on moving to Belfast and being a professor there, but then he knocked me off my feet with his science know-how and dorky smile."
"Am I that charming?" he asked before blushing.
"Don't flatter yourself too much," Rosie warned. "No one looks good with a big head."
"Fair," he moaned before taking a bite of his soda bread.
"Mommy," Mallory asked.
"Yes, Muffin?"
"Can Rosie stay with us?"
"Yeah, can she?"
"Well, I hope she can. Your father did set up the guest room all nice for her."
"Rosie?" Margaux asked with big puppy dog eyes. "Would you like to stay with us?"
"I would love to," she answered before looking at Otto. "I see she has your puppy dog eyes."
"Yeah, she's my little twin."
"Daddy, can she tell us a bedtime story tonight?" Margaux asked.
"Am I not good enough to read you a story anymore?" he asked with a whiny tone. "I thought you liked Story Time with Sailor Aubrey."
"We do, daddy," Margaux assured. "But we..."
"Margaux, how about this. What if Sailor Aubrey had a first mate? How about we have Story Time with Sailor Aubrey and First Mate Annie?"
"Anne is her middle name," Otto whispered to Sabrina, noticing her confused face.
"Yay! I like that! Can we do that, daddy?"
"Sure we can, Rosie Posie," he told her. "Thank you, Rosie."
"Of course. I hope you don't mind, Sabrina."
"Oh, no. I don't. I let Otto handle story time. I handle bath time."
"Okay, good. The last thing I want to do is ruin your groove."
"Oh, no, you're fine, Rosie. Thank you for being considerate though."
"No problem," she said. "So what's for dessert?"

Jolly Ol' Saint Otto
Tumblr media
Imag'n Toy Boutique was not too far from their Chelsea townhome, so it was a quick, quiet drive.
Their parking lot was behind the building, so Otto slowly turned the corner and parked in the empty space next to the back entrance.
He got out of the car first, taking in the crisp cool air as his breath was first taken away in a wisp of cold smoke as he took a first.
His actuators, who were once out and free huddled next to his vehicle's heater, quickly tucked themselves tight inside his big coat, jittering from the cold sensation they were forced to feel.
And although Otto was freezing and shaking in his coat, he couldn't help but adore how adorable Sabrina's reaction was to the snow.
The whole ride there she was silently humming Christmas carols while watching the snow fall, making his heart skip a beat.
Slowly, he opened her door and helped her out. She giggled and twirled around in the snow fall after she was released making her cold husband laugh in delight.
Swiftly, he joined her before she ran over and hugged him. He tightly hugged her back, enjoying the fluffinest of her coat as well as her natural warmth before he remembered the task at hand.
"We should have a snowball fight," she cooed as they walked gloved hand and hand to the front entrance.
He chuckled and answered, "After we finish shopping. I think there's probably enough snow in the parking lot to do that."
"Okay," she happily chirped.
They didn't even manage to fully get through the front door before the owner jumped out from the back to greet them.
She had a very happy attitude with a big white smile to boot. Her very curly red hair was bouncing in the reintroduced wind that the open door brought while her blue-green eyes twinkled in the bright lights about her.
"Hello, welcome to Imag'n!" she cheered before she realized who was standing in her doorway.
It was like she lost her train of thought as she stared at her customers, immediately noticing the actuators popping out of the bottom of Otto's coat to enjoy the warmth from the store's heater.
She squealed and ran over to them.
"Oh my gosh. Oh my gosh. I can't believe you're in my store. I'm such a big fan, Sabrina."
"Oh," she chirped. "Would you like..."
"Yes!" she immediately answered before she took her phone out of her pocket. "I just want a picture."
Sabrina nervously giggled and replied, "Okay."
Flo moved over by them and picked up the woman's phone much to her surprise. Meanwhile, the others came over to observe her before Otto told them to come back by him.
Reluctantly, they obeyed and Flo was able to take the pictures in peace. She took three and then handed it back to the woman, but her claw stayed opened with a faint glow of yellow.
"Ooh, these are really nice," the lady chirped. "Who knew the tentacles were this good at photography?"
All of them screeched at her comment before Sabrina pet Flo's claw and corrected her.
"They're called actuators. They hate being called tentacles," she said before the other three came by her and pet her cheeks in response.
"Wow, they really like you," she observed. "Not that I should be surprised. I watch your podcast all of the time and they're always all on you."
"You're an Actuatually fan?"
"Am I? I started watching it after I saw you perform as Giselle. You were amazing. And honestly, you two make such a cute couple. Relationship goals."
"Thank you, I think," Otto responded.
Sabrina giggled.
"Oh, where are my manners?" she jokingly asked. "I'm Elinor Whittaker. But you can call me Ellie. I'm the owner of this establishment."
"Oh, we know," Otto remarked. "I read about your grand opening in the Post."
"Funny, I thought you would have said The Daily Bugle."
"I don't read that trash," he grumbled.
"Right," she moaned. "Well, I assume you're here for the little one. I heard the news. Congratulations. You two are gonna be wonderful parents. Now if you just follow me, I'll take you to the baby toys."
"Actually, we're here for..." Sabrina started before Otto stopped her.
He insisted that Elinor take them to the baby toys, despite Sabrina's look of frustration at him.
Elinor didn't notice though and led them to the back of the store nearby the many Lego building sets that were displayed based on difficulty.
The baby toys, which were on the adjacent wall, were displayed flawlessly with each type of toy being put in a certain place.
The sensory and teething toys were right in the center of a buyers focal point while the educational toys were to the right and the plushies and dollies were to the left.
But Otto's eyes lit up when he noticed a plastic toy boat that looked a lot like the one he had as a child.
However, he reserved his excitement until Elinor finally left them alone to browse.
After she left, Sabrina started to softly tease him about the fact that they weren't there to look for toys for Margaux. But he was so fascinated with the boat that he didn't even register her teasing.
Slowly he grasped it in his leather gloved hands and just took in the amazing craftsmanship of it.
Although it was just plastic unlike the wood carved one his abuela gave him decades ago, he still could admire the beautiful paint job reminiscent of his old toy.
He hypothesized that whoever made this really want to put a nice little touch on it.
Sabrina soon noticed his fascination and the little admiring twinkle in his eye, which made her warmly smile.
Leave it to Otto to find the simple, little things in life so intriguing, she thought.
But she did admire that about him as well though.
"Starlight, we should get this for Margaux."
"Octi, we came here to shop for..."
"I know, I know," he playfully huffed. "But I want our little girl to have a piece of my childhood."
"Piece of your childhood?" she asked curiously.
"I used to have a toy boat just like this," he happily explained. "But it was handmade...wood carved. My abuela made it for me. She painted it almost exactly the same."
"Your abuela was a woodworker?" she asked in a surprised tone. She knew that his mother, Maria, was half Spanish so the fact that he called his grandmother 'abuela' didn't confuse her, but what did confuse her was how fondly he spoke of her.
He rarely talked about his family other than his mother, but it was a welcomed info-drop nonetheless.
"Yeah," he said with a bright smile as he kept looking at the boat in his hands. By then the actuators also fully crept out of his big coat and admired it too, their lights glowing as pink as Otto's pale face.
"She was a woodworker and a potter. Her mother was gifted in the work of clay and her father was a carpenter. She was the third of five girls and my great-grandfather was afraid that he wouldn't have anyone to pass the skill on to. But she grasped it real fast and helped him at his shop until she met my Opa. He was on a European tour and they met at a Cafe. They fell in love and eventually moved here. My mother grew up not too far from here."
"You never told me that."
"It never came up," he said with a chuckle. "Maybe I'll show you on the way back home."
"I would like that," she replied. "So I guess you really loved that boat."
"I did. I took it every where I went when I was little. My Opa was an boating enthusiast. He had his own boat that he would take me on all of the time and we even participate in some boat races near the Hudson. We won a couple of tournaments."
"Hmm, so that's why you're so good with your hands," she hummed. "It was all in your hereditary."
He chuckled.
"Yes, well that and many summers with abuela and opa."

The sun sets over a tidal flat in Southwestern South Korea. Tidal Flats are a type of Ecosystem that Provide Habitat for Wildlife and help fight climate change—yet many are at risk of disappearing.
Yubudo, South Korea — As Byeongwoo Lee slowly walks across a sandy tidal flat on Yubudo, a small island off the west coast of South Korea, the birding guide does so quietly.
“You can’t see the birds right now,” Lee said. “You can feel them.”
Through the scope, it was just possible to make out their blurry shapes in the dark, and to hear the gentle but powerful “whhhrrr-reet-reet-reet” of tens of thousands of birds as they fed at the shoreline and in the shallow water.
As the sun rose, the tide retreated until it revealed six miles of the muddy sea floor. Channels of water like tree branches crisscrossed mud teeming with crabs, clams, snails, and sea worms.

Top: Depending on the time of day, tidal flats are either completely submerged under water or exposed to the air. Seen here at low tide, tidal channels criss cross an exposed tidal flat neighboring a residential neighborhood in Muan, South Korea.
Bottom: During an annual ceremony that takes place on the first full moon of the Lunar New Year, Gwangho Chu bows before a ceremonial table placed on a tidal flat in Wando, a small island in South Korea. Coastal communities in the Yellow Sea region have continued to honor the centuries-old tradition of celebrating the ancestral spirits of the sea and praying for a good harvest from the tidal flats.
Tidal flats like these are a type of wetland found on coastlines around the world. Korea’s Yellow Sea tidal flats, like those found on Yubudo Island, form the heart of an 18,000-mile route traveled by 50 million shorebirds as they migrate from eastern Russia and Alaska in the summer to Australia and New Zealand in the winter.
Many of them only stop once on their marathon journeys, and the tidal flats of South Korea provide them with essential food and shelter.
Yet despite their critical importance to the environment, many are at risk of disappearing. Some of the most important, and most endangered, are found surrounding the Yellow Sea along the shores of China and the western side of the Korean peninsula.
For decades, people have been transforming them into industrial sites and farms, squeezing them into smaller areas and pushing some species to the brink of extinction. But as science increasingly shows how wetlands like these benefit wildlife and help fight climate change, South Korean scientists and conservationists are gaining momentum in their effort to save and restore what’s left.

Many of the residents living around the seawall used to make a living working in the seafood industry, but the destruction of nearby tidal flats significantly decreased their harvests, threatening their livelihood.
Why Tidal Flats Are An Environmental Powerhouse
“The tidal flats made the relationship between humans and the sea possible,” said Joon Kim, a senior researcher at the Jeonnam Research Institute who studies the culture around Korean tidal flats.
Since prehistory, South Korea’s coastal communities relied on tidal flats for harvesting clams, crabs, octopus, and seaweed, adjusting their way of life to the tide’s schedule. Their biodiversity and abundance inspired many beloved local cuisines, unique coastal culture, and a fishing economy worth over $330 million U.S. dollars a year.
These same ecosystems are now helping fight climate change.
South Korean universities are partnering with the government to study tidal flats and their ability to clean polluted water, protect shoreline communities from storms, and mitigate climate change by absorbing carbon dioxide.
Korean tidal flats are full of tiny one-celled organisms called benthic diatoms that sink through the mud as they complete their life cycle, burying carbon dioxide in the deep sediment, says Jong Seong Khim, a marine scientist and professor at Seoul National University.

Bottom: People ride recreational boats through a man-made canal at a city park in Songdo, South Korea. Once a thriving tidal flat ecosystem, Songdo was built on reclaimed land and hailed for creating "a city out of nothing." Over the past 70 years, South Korea has lost over two-thirds of its tidal flats due to reclamation projects like these.
The diversity and number of benthic diatoms make South Korean tidal flats unique, as does its thick mud—over 80 feet deep in some tidal flats.
In 2021, Khim and his fellow researchers published a study showing South Korea’s tidal flats and salt marshes absorb 260,000 tons of carbon dioxide annually, equivalent to taking about 110,000 cars off the road every year.
The same year, the South Korean government announced a four-year project to bring back tidal flats and salt marshes to help fight climate change.
Kim hopes that by showing how effectively tidal flats store carbon, governments and conservation groups will recognize them as valuable and save them from being destroyed.
Why Tidal Flats Are In Danger
In the past 70 years, South Korea has transformed from a country devastated by war into a highly developed, industrial nation. During this rapid change, two-thirds of its tidal flats subsequently disappeared.
In a country surrounded by the ocean on three sides, like South Korea, engineering solid, dry land over water-logged terrain, a process referred to as land reclamation, can expand territory or create more farmland.
Of all the threats to tidal flats—such as sea level rise and pollution—land reclamation has led to the most loss.
Scientists are only beginning to understand the true extent of this loss globally, but one recent study suggests 16 percent of the world’s tidal flats have disappeared in the past few decades.
“We are at a point where we should consider what we can do to give back to tidal flats,” said Kim.

One of the most controversial shoreline developments is Saemangeum, a 100,000-acre reclamation project seven times the size of Manhattan.
Developers first envisioned Saemangeum as a vast agricultural area for rice cultivation, then as the economy changed, they promised to turn it into an industrial corridor.
In 2006, despite lawsuits and protests, a 21-mile-long wall in Saemangeum deprived the ecosystem of the water it needed to exist. Just one part of the region’s transformation, it set the Guinness World Record for the world’s longest sea dam.
Millions of shellfish died when the wall severed the ecosystem from the tide.
Finding no food and no place to land, tens of thousands of migratory birds disappeared. About 90,000 now-endangered great knot birds died, driving their total population numbers down by at least 24 percent.
Tumblr media
Top: The 21-mile-long Saemangeum seawall is is the longest such structure in the world. After its construction, tens of thousands of shorebirds disappeared from the area that used to be one of the most important habitats along the Yellow Sea region.
Bottom: As excavators work on tidal flat reclamation in Songdo, shorebirds rest during their annual migration from Australia to the Russian Far East. Developing tidal flats in this region destroys critical habitats for the 50 million migratory birds that fly this route every year.

Sura is one of the last remaining tidal flats found within the Saemangeum reclamation site. Dongpil and Seungjun are part of the Saemangeum Citizen Ecology Investigation Team, a grassroots organization that advocates for conservation and documents threats to tidal flats impacted by the Saemanguem.
It wasn’t only wildlife that suffered. Before the wall, the area was known for the nation’s best clams, with a fishing industry supporting around 20,000 people. Nearly all of that disappeared.
And yet despite promises of jobs made to the community, developers have completed less than half of the reclamation, and much of what has been reclaimed are undeveloped empty lots.
Saemangeum developers now plan to build an airport over the last remaining tidal flat, Sura, with construction scheduled to begin in 2024. Activists are suing to stop it, pointing out that the site still provides habitat for endangered species like black-faced spoonbills and Far Eastern curlews.
“It’s painful to remember how much it’s changed. Sometimes you forget how beautiful it was in the past because your eyes adjust to what it looks like now,” said Dongpil Oh, one of the activists involved and leader of the Saemangeum Citizen Ecological Investigation Team.

Around 90 percent of these endangered shorebirds breed on the country’s west coast. After their worldwide population dropped below 300 in the late 1980s, conservation efforts have brought their numbers to around 5,200. “As a top predator in tidal flats, their health can indicate the health of the overall ecosystem,” researcher Inki Kwon said.
Bottom: Ecotourist guide Sunjeong Heo points out a flock of birds over a tidal flat at Suncheon Bay Wetland Reserve in South Korea. Drawing over six million visitors a year, the UNESCO World Heritage site is a blueprint for the country’s tidal flat conservation and ecotourism.
A New Era of Conservation
After 30 years of construction, Saemangeum has become synonymous with ecological collapse, but it also sparked an environmental movement in South Korea after people witnessed what happens when tidal flats are lost.
Two years after the Saemangeum seawall was finished, in 2008, the South Korean government banned new large-scale reclamation projects—though developments already in progress, like Saemangeum, are still permitted.
And in 2019, reclamation of tidal flats finally plateaued in South Korea, when the net gain from restoration barely surpassed the loss, according to a 2023 report from the International Union for Conservation of Nature.
One of the best places to see the benefit of this kind of conservation is South Korea’s Suncheon Bay Wetland Reserve, on the peninsula's southern edge. The wetland was spared from the threat of development in the ‘90s, when residents and activists protested the government’s plan to mine the land.
Suncheon Bay became the country’s first internationally protected coastal wetland, and its tidal flats were designated a UNESCO World Heritage site in 2021, along with four other tidal flats in South Korea. Every year, over six million tourists visit the wetland and the nearby National Garden to see wildlife like hooded cranes and blue-spotted mud skippers.
With municipal and national funds, the Suncheon Bay Wetland Reserve bought nearby farmland by the coast, restoring the connection with the sea.
Their holistic approach to restoration has introduced organic rice farming to reduce pollution from runoff and educational opportunities for ecotourists, residents, and children in local schools. Suncheon’s success is a blueprint for tidal flat conservation around the world.
“Our focus is on letting the tide flow again, like it always did,” said Sunmi Hwang, a conservationist with the wetland reserve. “And then nature heals itself.”

Donald Trump and his supporters are unable to process facts. That inability led to many of them engaging in questionable election-related lawsuits and extremely questionable election-related public statements. Alleging a “stolen” election, Trump and his backers claimed, without any supporting evidence, voting machines/software made by Dominion Voting Systems and Smartmatic conspired to rob the lame duck of a second term in office.
Windbags of all varieties not only opined about widespread election fraud, they made statements of fact that apparently contained no facts. While Trump and his fanbase sued states and a laundry list of people they felt had wronged them, these companies decided to start suing back.
So far, the entities with actual facts on their side appear to be winning. Dominion Voting Systems has been granted permission to continue its lawsuit against Fox News for its participation in delivering false claims about the company. Now, it’s Smartmatic’s turn. A New York appeals court has ruled Fox can’t escape this defamation lawsuit. (via Volokh Conspiracy)
The decision is short (four pages!) but pretty damn sweet. It denies the anti-SLAPP motion and other motions to dismiss filed by the defendants (which include Fox News, Fox News personalities Jeanine Pirro, Lou Dobbs, and Maria Bartiromo, and frequent Fox News guests Rudy Giuliani and Sidney Powell). As the court points out, Smartmatic has alleged enough to sustain the lawsuit’s continuance.
"Supreme Court [this refers to the lower level trial court] correctly declined to dismiss the defamation claims asserted against Fox News, Dobbs, Bartiromo, and Giuliani. Under New York’s Anti-SLAPP statute (Civil Rights Law §§ 76-a[1][a], [2]), to withstand dismissal under CPLR 3211(g)(1), the claims pleaded must have “a substantial basis in law,” which requires “such relevant proof as a reasonable mind may accept as adequate to support a conclusion or ultimate fact” (Golby v N & P Engrs. & Land Surveyor, PLLC, 185 AD3d 792, 793-794 [2d Dept 2020]). The meticulously detailed complaint satisfied the requirements of CPLR 3211(g)(1)."
More specifically, the court says the complaint filed by Smartmatic contains “significant allegations” the multiple defendants “made defamatory statements” about the company’s supposed involvement in the rigging of the 2020 election. It also says the Fox News “reporters” did more than report on defamatory statements made by Trump supporters. They also advanced these views by granting them credence and offering supporting statements of their own — statements that appear to have recklessly disregarded the truth.
"In fact, according to the allegations in the complaint, Fox News, Dobbs, and Bartiromo stated that Smartmatic’s election technology and software were widely used in the 2020 election and in Dominion machines to switch votes, when they actually knew, or easily could have known had they not purposefully avoided publicly available knowledge, that in 2020, the Smartmatic technology was used only in Los Angeles County and that the vote switching claims otherwise had no support… Based on the same \ reasoning, the claims against Pirro, which are based on similar allegations of defamatory statements made with actual malice, must be reinstated."
Yep. They screwed up. And someone who thought he might have time to head home and wipe the hair dye-tainted flop sweat from his brow is now back in the (liable/libel) mix, thanks to the New York appellate court.
“However, Supreme Court erred in dismissing the third and fifth causes of action as against defendant Giuliani, and we reinstate those claims.”
It is to LOL. The guy who managed to give opportunistic, bottom-feeding lawyers a bad name is still potentially on the hook for millions in defamation.
The only party to be granted an exit is Fox Corporation itself. Smartmatic’s lawsuit — as “meticulously detailed” as it is — doesn’t have enough in it to show Fox Corp. itself engaged in defamation. The eminently sanctionable Sidney Powell is also allowed to walk away from this lawsuit. But that’s only because she chose to spend most of her time (allegedly) defaming Dominion Voting Systems. She’s still a viable defendant in that company’s lawsuits.
These defendants may have cast their lot with Trump, but the loyalty only goes one way. While Trump no doubt benefited from their agitating on his behalf, these defendants are on their own when it comes to shelling out damages should the case be resolved in Smartmatic’s favor. That’s the thing about grifting. It’s a team effort until there are consequences to be suffered. Then everyone is on their own, ignored by former compatriots who are putting as much distance between them and the resulting damage as possible.

I do think that a lot of Tubbo’s intentionally scaring/hazing of ranboo stems from the fact his own boundaries have been crossed so many times to the point he doesn’t have a sense for what is and is not acceptable behavior+ and bringing it back to the song pygmalion here, he’s trying to push it so he can see if Ranboo’s going to like snap and hurt him like so many other people have, which dovetails nicely with the lyric “and how do you know she won’t seize control”+ it’s also a little bit of Tubbo trying to be ‘the person on top of the dynamic’ before ranboo gets to it because aside from clingyduo that’s pretty much all the interpersonal dynamics he’s ever had.
have you read Withered? I feel like Tubbo’s attempt to avoid being put into a situation like with what he had with schlatt and then inadvertently continuing the cycle of abuse with jack is kinda a magnified version of what was going on there? Like he assumes an imbalance of power is inevitable and just becomes determined to be on top of the imbalance instead of on the bottom?
but when I said that cbeeduo didn’t have the same aspect of being comforted by the other person’s emotional distress, I meant that in the album, Sylvia likes seeing Jeanine in distress because she likes knowing that Jeanine is just as messy inside as she and cbeeduo is predicating on both members insisting that The Other Guy Is Totally Fine Actually And If He Isn’t I Can Fix It
Re fist paragraph yeah that's basically what I meant wrt the shaped by his prev experiences. Like a lot of how Tbbo acts in the worse ways is stuff he has been actively taught by his interactions w/ everyone else yk? He's just been taught how power play works this is just how you operate and interact w/ people
Re 2nd paragraph HELL YEAH WITHEREDSWEEP. Like no genuinely it is absolutely part of the overall larger thing on the DSMP of cycles of violence and coercion
Re third paragraph yeeee that is definitely tru. It's not that kind of schadenfreude as much as it is . Well . Living In A Society

Admittedly I have super specific tastes but how do you feel about Hughie x Marvin 👉👈 ?
I really think that they would be cute! I can honestly map the progression from their first meetings, when Marvin is showering him with praise for his computer skills, and being an emotional tether when Hughie runs into A-Train. I’m a Butchie warrior but I can’t help but think that they would be very good for each other, because Marvin is nice and Butcher is mean (I love him, Hughie loves him, but he’s a jerk) and I think it would compliment someone like Hughie, who wants to see him become his best self and is patient enough to see it through. Part of this is Marvin’s status as a family man, especially the fatherhood aspect. He has the energy and attentiveness necessary to be a good dad, and I easily see Hughie benefiting a lot from that kind of patience and peace. Maybe that’s just me projecting, because I’m a DILF hunter and it’s just a part of me I can’t change 🫢.
I think that Hughie would be a good dad, too, because he knows that parents, and the lack thereof can really shape a big part of who you are, so he’s really good with Janine (or Jeanine), helping her with homework, attempting to play pretend with her even though I’m sure he’s bad at it, bringing “Starlight” over to hang out, etc. There’s also something to be said about the way their traumas have intersected at this point and how all of the things they’ve been through together have shaped them and their relationship. It’s clear that Hughie likes people who could break him in half and MM is all big and buff and serious, but also so gentle and understanding. I bet he smells like vanilla and leather and disinfectant.
Mostly, I think that Hughie is like a blunt and he should be passed around to everybody to maximize the group morale. He’s like the team girlfriend, they all share him just a little bit. Have you heard of the phrase “Pass-Around Party Bottom”? That’s what he is. I’m not really a connoisseur of Marvin x Hughie fics (sorry, Butchie warrior 🫡)or other material so I don’t really think about it often enough to have a deep or productive conversation quite yet and I just woke up, so my thoughts are very scattered but yes that’s how I feel.

Echo for the ship ask 😄
Ship It
What made you ship it?
everything, like Jeanine and Nathan’s chemistry was addictive, the season one writing was exemplary, them sharing a milkshake? Max healing her at the risk of his own life/secrets? Liz telling him she felt safe with him even though she didn’t trust him? the freakin’ pilot episode handprint? also, like just circa episode three Max throwing out that “I love you” and it being so believable and painful as a viewer cause it was undoubtable even though both characters were relatively new and hadn’t seen each other in a literal decade (sorry to ramble, I just adore them so much)
What are your favorite things about the ship?
again everything, but to be frank the way they keep coming back together and always choose to work through their problems and support each other, like the amount of issues and world shattering events they’ve gone through yet they’ll take a few deep breaths sit on their couch and be brutally honest for a moment
Is there an unpopular opinion you have on your ship?
well, I liked Max from the get go… outside of that I love Liz’s morally dubiousness except when it’s harmful to her loved ones (cause she’d never), and Max Evans is a bottom
send me a ship <3

Real Farmer — Compare What’s There (Strap Originals)
Tumblr media
Real Farmer, from Groningen in the Netherlands, plays scrappy, stripped down, anthemic punk, blitz-speed strumming clamoring over eruptive blots of bass. The band shares a member with Lewsberg (that’s bass player Marrit Meinema) but none of that outfit’s tamped down, VU-ish surreality. These are straight up bangers, ripped and bashed and shouted. They’re tuneful in the way that Cock Sparrer anthems can be, the songs glittering under a pile of clash and racket.
“Perry Boys,” for instance, puts a stirring hook under battering ram sonics—furiously slashed guitars blurring into one sound, drums bunching into rapid fire fills that sound like a line of bottle rockets going off one by one. Jeroen Klootsema delivers hoarse, impassioned spates of words, the sand in his sung-spoke voice akin to Fontaines DC’s Grian Chatten or Royal Headache’s Shogun Wall. Meinema makes an impact as well, through blurts of clarifying bass and surprisingly breezy intervals of melody. That’s her crooning “ah-ah-ah” at the beginning of “Inner City,” like Alicia Jeanine, though in this case, there’s a freight train coming. You might flash onto the great Prolapse in this and other Meinema-forward cuts, the cool solace of female vocals over a sucking black hole of madness.
And then there’s “I Can’t Run,” a blunt force swagger that’s full of drama and doomed heroism. Klootsema growls and barks and entices, his rough voice carving out large gestures and doomed romantic theatrics. The bass bounces along right at the bottom of the clef, part dance, part bludgeoning, and the guitars rain down hard but not as fast, in a cut that beats like a dying heart. See if you don’t think about Iggy Pop and “Lust for Life” when the video plays.
There’s more variation in this disc’s 13 songs than you might expect, with some tracks led by Klootsema and others by Meinema, some brash and unyielding, others embellished with flourishes of melody. What there isn’t is a single bad song. Punk’s still thriving in all kinds of places. Add Groningen to the list.

UN envoy in Iraq to step down at end of May, says country ‘on a knife edge’
Tumblr media
The head of the United Nations political mission in Iraq, Jeanine Hennis-Plasschaert, has told the Security Council she expects to step down at the end of May, adding the country was “on a knife edge”.
The former Dutch defence minister was appointed by UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres in late 2018. The UN Assistance Mission for Iraq aims to advance inclusive political dialogue and helps coordinate humanitarian and development aid.

“For Iraq to further continue on its path of stability and progress, an enabling environment will prove essential. And, such an environment requires restraint from all sides,” Hennis-Plasschaert told the 15-member Security Council on Tuesday.
Iran-aligned groups, known collectively as the “Axis of Resistance”, have been waging attacks against Israeli and US targets from Lebanon, Yemen, Iraq and Syria, since Israel began its war in Gaza following the Hamas attack on October 7.
Washington responded with attacks in a cycle of escalating violence that Iraqi officials said threatened to undo progress towards stabilising the country after decades of conflict.
“While we are, of course, aware that many authorities and actors seek to limit further escalation, it is clear that the situation remains volatile. Iraq – indeed, the wider region – remain on a knife-edge, with the tiniest miscalculation threatening a major conflagration,” Hennis-Plasschaert said.
There was an “urgent need to cease attacks, be they originating from within or outside” of Iraq, she said, adding, “And, as stated many times in past years, this must include reining in armed actors operating outside state control.”
Security Council permanent members Russia and China have criticsed the US for its recent air raids on targets in Iraq and Syria.
The two countries accused Washington of raising the risk of regional escalation at a meeting of the Security Council late on Monday. Moscow claimed that the US decision to launch the attacks was linked to the upcoming presidential election in November.
Russia had requested the council meeting after the US launched dozens of attacks against Iran-aligned targets in Iraq and Syria. The raids followed a drone attack on a US base in Jordan that killed three soldiers.
The US air raids, which killed more than a dozen people, including civilians, demonstrate Washington’s complete disregard for international law, Moscow’s UN Ambassador Vassily Nebenzia said. He accused the US of seeking to draw Middle Eastern powers, including Iran, into a regional conflict.
The United States invaded Iraq and toppled leader Saddam Hussein in 2003, precipitating years of rebellion and fighting among Iraq’s ethnic and religious groups.
It withdrew its troops in 2011, but sent thousands back after ISIL’s surge into the country three years later.

All It Took Was One Look - Chapter 37

Jeanine
Dom and I were sitting in the living room at my house watching T.V.
I could tell something was wrong with Dom but I had yet to ask him.
He was fidgety and constantly peering at me from the corner of his eye throughout the movie till I couldn't take it anymore.
"Dammit, Dom. What's wrong with you?" I demanded swirly jumping from the couch and glaring down at him.
I was playing with him but my playfulness soon dispersed as I saw his face.
The serious and scared look on his face caused me to change my attitude to worry.
I knelt in front of him grabbing his hand in mine.
"What baby? What's wrong," I asked seriously.
"We need to talk," he whispered to me.
My heart stopped then... was he going to break up with me?
He was going to break up with me.
Slowly I stood and backed away from him.
He must have noticed the look on my face and he shot from the couch.
"No, no, no, no, no."
He rushed reaching out to cup my face gently.
"No, Jay not that talk. I just need to tell you something, something important," he said nervously.
I swallowed as I nodded at him.
He smiled as he held my hand and guided me out of my house and into the backwoods close to my house.
I know is sort of scary to have woods behind your house.
Perfect target for crazy maniacs.
Once we were far enough away from my house I was beginning to sweat as my mind began to go into over drive.
Why the hell is he taking me back here?
Omg. Is he going to kill me?
I shook my head... he wouldn't do that... he the sweetest guy I know and I trust him.
We stopped finally and were surrounded by a crap load of trees, my house was long gone.
"Why are we out here?" I asked him timidly as I looked around.
When he didn't answer I turned back to him and frowned as I found the look of panic on his face.
"Dominic?"
"I love you, Jeanine," he blurted.
My eyes widened and my breath caught in my lungs.
He what?
Did he just say what I thought he did?
"W-what?" my voice was barely a whisper.
"I Love You," he said again pronouncing it clearly.
Yep. I heard him right.
"Dom," I didn't know what to say to that.
Did I love him too? My heart was beating erratically.
No one has made me feel like this before.
He was so different and I didn't know what to do.
He cupped my cheek in his warm big hand... those weird comforting tingles he always made shot up my face and I closed my eyes in pleasure.
"You don't have to answer Jeanine but I had to tell you before I burst."
My eyes opened to find him inches from my face... his deep brown eyes gazing into mine with such an intensity that my knees became weak.
I love him. I think I love him, too.
I knew it right then and there but I couldn't open my mouth.
I was afraid to.
"You make me feel alive Jay and I know that no one else is going to be able to make me feel this. Ever," he continued, his thumb lightly caressing my bottom lip.
"Just looking at you makes my heart beat faster than a mocking birds wings. You are everything to me and I can't hide from you anymore... I don't want to," his words were making me feel dizzy and warm.
Wait hide?
I wanted to ask him what he was hiding but my tongue refused to obey me.
"I want to show you the real me but I don't know what you will do," his voice strained.
I didn't like him feeling uncomfortable... he didn't have to hide from me and he could trust me.
"What is it Dom?" I finally asked.
He backed away from me till we had a sizable distance between us.
I gave him a questionable look.
"What are you doing?" I asked him taking a step closer, his hand came up to stop me.
"I'm showing you the real me Jay," he said his face became expressionless.
I was so confused.
"Just please understand," was all he said before he took his shirt off and unbuttoned his pants.
My eyes widened in surprise.
What the hell.
But I couldn't look away, I mean DAMN this boy had a body on him.
He was in his boxers and out of breath.
"This is me, Jeanine."
Then it happened.
I cringed at the nasty sound of bone breaking and reforming together.
I stared to freak thinking something bad was happening to him.
I began to rush towards him to help him when a huge wolf took his place and I froze mid step.
Its head reached my shoulder... I stared at it in disbelief.
This was Dominic?
No. It couldn't be.
It eyes stared at me, brown the same color as Dom's.
Oh my God this was...DOM.
I scurried backwards falling on my bottom as the realization hit me hard.
He walked over towards me slowly and I crawled backwards as the terror of him eating me entered my mind.
A scream ripped its way from my mouth and I was stopped trunk of a tree.
I covered my face waiting for him to rip me apart but it never came.
Lowering my arms a bit I saw him pause a few feet away from me with the most heart crushing expression on his face.
My chest tightened to see him look like this but I couldn't get over the fact that my boyfriend was a FREAKING WOLF.
When I realized he wasn't going to move towards me anymore... I rose to me feet slowly my eyes watching him wearily.
I sidestepped breathing hard as my heart pumped in fear.
His brown eyes never left my face and I swore I could see tears starting to build in his eyes.
But I couldn't worry about that... I had to get out of here.
Away from him.
I gently walked backwards and when he made no move to stop me I turned tail and ran, back to my house as fastest my feet could take me.. letting out small screams on the way.
The moment I reached my house I rushed in the front door as my mom was walking in the kitchen.
She turned around in shock... her hand to her heart but I didn't have the energy to care.
"Jeez, Jeanine don't run in that house like that," she scolded but I ignored her as I ran up the stairs and into my room.
My heart was beating a mile a minute as I stared at the walls but saw nothing.
He changed into a wolf.
This isn't possible, these things don't happen.
I was pacing my floor as I tried to wrap my head around all this but it was hard.
He was a werewolf.
A freaking werewolf.
A heart wrenching howl sounded from outside causing me to stop pacing and look out of my window.
Omg.
I was in love with a werewolf?
"I need Aiden to tell me what in the hell I should do."
********
Hospitals always freak me out.
The thought of all the people who have died in here and that there is a freaking morgue somewhere in the basement.
A shiver ran down my spine as I walked down the hall to Aiden's room.
The feeling of dread washed over me again as I neared the door.
I still couldn't believe that my best friend was stuck in a coma.
I stood from the door way looking at him lying there motionless... it's been over a month and he still wouldn't wake up.
I was kind of shocked that Liam wasn't in here like he always is.
Walking closer to the edge of the bed the tears were filling up in my eyes as I stared down at him.
"Hey Aiden," I softly said.
I heard that coma patients can hear you so I didn't feel stupid talking to his unconscious body.
I set my purse down on the side table and turned to sit on the bed with him.
"We miss you around school, Aiden."
I took his hand in mine.
"We have so much to catch up on when you realize what an asshole you've been and wake up," I chided playfully.
My smile vanished though when I thought about all that we would be talking about.
Like how Dom was a flipping werewolf.
I closed my eyes as my heart squeezed at the memory of that day.
I didn't realize that I was shaking till I opened my eyes to see that the room was moving unusually.
"Aiden, Dom told me a secret that I'm not sure how to handle," I whispered to him... scooting further on the bed, my legs drawn up against my chest as I leaned on the back of the plastic bed frame by his feet.
"What do I do?" I asked staring blankly at the white wall ahead of me.
"I'm confused and scared."
And of course I got no answer.
Sighing I trained my eyes back on Aiden.
His eyes closed, his still pale face.
"You'd probably call me a crazy if I told you. I bet if I was overheard, they would throw me down in the psych ward for evaluations and tests to see if I really am crazy," I laughed humorlessly.
"I like him, Aiden. But how can I be with Dom if I'm scared of him all the time?"
The response to my question was the constant beeping of his heart monitor and noisy respirator.
My arms tightened around my legs.
"I've been ignoring him and trying my hardest to stay as far from him as possible. I feel bad about it but what am I supposed to do?"
I was starting to choke on a sobbed that began to form in my throat.
Maybe it was the thought of how indifferent and mean I've been to Dom or that I wanted Aiden to answer me back... needed him to tell me what to do.
I crawled closer to him and laid beside him placing my head on his shoulder like I always did when we talked about important things.
"I know I'm hurting him... I can see it in his eyes and it's tearing me up inside."
I stifled a smile as I thought of what Aiden would say to that.
'Well damn Jay, if it's doing all this to you it's not worth making yourself suffer. Screw it and go for it...'
"I know what you would say but you haven't seen him," I whispered to him.

Predicting the Past
Initially titled Predicting the Past: Experiments in Reverse-Prescience, in its early digital version, the catalog tells about how Shimmel Zohar was born in Zhidik, Lithuania, in 1822, and arrived in New York in 1857, and eventually established a photographic studio on two floors of 432 Pearl Street, on the Lower East Side, a neighborhood teeming with Jewish immigrants. About how he enjoyed some success but then suddenly abandoned his studio and hit the road, becoming an itinerant photographer touring America, perhaps in search of Flora, his former showgirl paramour — and, who knows, maybe even the roller-skate girl —, planning to return to New York within a year but then simply vanishing, never to be heard from again. All true, apparently, except for the photos. In short, after a series of failed searches for Zohar’s material, Berkman had to give up and restage all his tableaus, “as a sort of tribute to Zohar Studios”, by following the Yiddish directions found in a notebook. It all began in the late ’90s, when Berkam and his wife Jeanine were visiting the Chelsea Flea Market, in New York, and came upon an ancient, dog-eared scrapbook, which they bought for $60. Suddenly, arrested by one photo in those pages, a sort of theatrical cabinet card with a “loopily melodramatic image on the front,” Berkman started wondering where it might have come from — there was no credit on the back. Then, he found the notebook — “a big, thick ledger sort of thing, which consisted of a handwritten diary” — in the false bottom of a battered old Zohar’s trunk bought at the Elli Buk’s antiques emporium, down on Spring Street, in Soho. The notebook was lost after the death of the man in charge of translating it from Yiddish, Feivel Finkel, an old friend of Berkman. But, fortunately, Feivel had described the tableaus… “So yeah,” Berkman said, “technically, the photos are actually mine. But we really don’t need to make a big thing out of that. As I say, I myself don’t want to get in the way.”
