Labyrinth Theory
Rewatched Labyrinth again and as always I find something new with each watch through.
After Sarah wakes up from her hallucination she falls into the junkyard and meets Junk Lady. Junk Lady manages to take Sarah into an identical replica of her room, where Sarah thinks she dreamed it all. Until, she opens the door and the Junk Lady comes in and begins showing Sarah all of her possessions and trying to get her to stay in there with them.
But here's the detail that I never thought about before.
Tumblr media
She piles them on the back of Sarah's chair. She piles them on Sarah's back. She's trying to turn Sarah into one of them.
I'm a big "it was all real" truther with this movie. And with that in mind I think all of the Junk People in this movie are former runners. People like Sarah who were trying to save someone, and failed.
When Sarah opens the door to leave the Junk Lady says-
JUNK LADY: "Better to stay in here, dear! Yes! There's nothing you want out there! No, oh, no." (01:12:15)
I think the Junk People failed to save someone from the Labyrinth, and were thus trapped. Maybe they ignored who they were saving to instead find comfort in their items, like Junk Lady tries to do with Sarah. Or they failed and then found comfort in their items. If you look on Junk Lady's back she has a chess board, a drum and some stuffed animals along with everything else. It looks like she tried to take her whole room with her, including the chair she sat in. Similar to how Sarah sits down in her chair.
And isn't that a fitting punishment? You failed to save what truly mattered, so why not carry with you for all eternity what you really cared about. I mean, Junk Lady says it herself:
JUNK LADY: "It's all here. Everything in the world you've ever cared about, is all right here." (01:13:20)
Not to mention her reaction to hearing Sarah reciting from the Labyrinth book. She's heard those words before, but in this version of the film she's no longer being puppeted by Jareth. So how does she know? Unless she had that book once too.
Idk what are y'all's thoughts?

Labyrinth 2 and 3 The Prequels
Generations love Labyrinth, the 1986 musical fantasy film directed by Jim Henson; they can’t get enough of it. There’s comics, novels, merchandise and more… But new fans who can’t get enough of the Henson classic may be unaware that intentionally (or unintentionally) there’s already prequels of sorts awaiting their viewing. Back when music television was king, David Bowie released many Labyrinth…

I’ve always called her The Bag Lady but I think most refer to her as The Junk Lady — either way, Agnes is a treasure.

5 episodes into Rings of Power and still enjoying the hell out of myself. The first scene with the travelling song is more in spirit with Tolkien than almost anything I’ve ever seen. It’s not Tolkien if people aren’t singing okay? I wanna know who wrote those lyrics they’re amazing
Numenor remains close to perfect, I’m loving all the dwarven culture stuff (says a lot for someone who never really cared about dwarves), and the elves (except the hair) are all pretty on point. I mean Arondir apologized to a tree. That’s so elf it hurts.
people say amazon wanted their own GoT but this isn’t GoT. There’s no gratuitous violence or torture for one thing, even with the orcs who canonically do pretty terrible things to their prisoners (and I’m 100% certain they’re going with the elvish origin which has many Unfortunate Implications). They haven’t even mentioned the canonical incest (yet). Though most of that was First Age and all of it ended in tragedy.
and yes, there are politics, people scheming, dying, there’ll probably be some murders but have you read the fucking silmarillion??? This show is actually LIGHT compared to some of the stuff in the Silm (the top tags on AO3 are pretty informative actually lmao)
But the point is I don’t get GoT vibes at all. YMMV but IMO this show is much closer to the spirit of Middle-earth than people think.
If this was a fanfic I’d be hooked refreshing the page! It’s a high budget fanfic. Bougie Tolkien Junk Food.
And I’m loving it.

recently thinking about the concept of a new npc/semi-cryptid healer character: a little (REALLY little) old lady who rides around on a giant animal (boar or something) whose....family(??) has a long history of healing talents through accupuncture, herbal remedies, pressure points, chiropractic things, etc.
the family line/line of practice has a history of very long life BECAUSE of the healing practices, so this little old lady is maybe...150? 170? years old??? shed be the healer the guild goes to, since her remedies are BETTER than mochis magic AND limes tech junk, she can help any one of them without problem
but the odd thing about her is that shes NOT a witch, weirdly. her healing is 100% natural, which means it works on those with high magic res, since it has nothing to do with magic.
i also think the family history would have this weird relationship with witches, where theyre willing to heal them (for a price of course), but they absolutely REFUSE to give their secrets to any witch. "You'll just make it better and put us out of a job." they always say, so even mochi doesnt know what the hell is in that soup shes eating, all she knows is that its capable of instantly restoring 90% of her magic (5 day cooldown before she can drink it again though, lest she die)

There are lots of reasons to hate AI generators right now. But aside from the plagiarism, the impact on career artists of all stripes, and the general use of AI for grifting schemes, they also just really suck if you already have trouble with unreality.
I'm not talking about "oooh those AI images sure are creepy."
I'm talking about "folks with low media literacy are telling me, a nervous, obsessive wreck, that Unreality-Type Things are Definitely Real because the Smart Science Fiction Machine told them so."
There's an old lady who frequents my workplace as a customer, and she likes me, y'know? I keep the place clean, I let her chat. I'm polite. So, she's decided that I'm a nice person who deserves to be warned if something bad is happening in the world. Trouble is, she eats up every news source without scrutiny, and has chipperly informed me that "ignorance is not bliss" when I've admitted that I don't follow the news very closely (for mental health reasons.)
Anyway, her daughter's taken to addressing the AI software in her phone about current political events. So the old lady came to me one day, very nervous, and quietly informed me that World War Three is probably going to happen in November.
Because the AI said so. And the AI, it's smart right? That's why it's callled "artificial intelligence." It's gotten fed all that knowledge, so it must know these things.
Except that it doesn't. Text AI are just sentence generators. No context, no awareness, no thought process to speak of.
I know this. I'm not socially competent enough to inform her of this in-person, since that requires more talking than an "uh-huh, yep," but I know this. I know that World War Three is not happening in November just because an AI said so. Ask an AI "when is WW3 happening?" ten different times, and it'll give you ten different answers. Tell it that it's full of crap, and it'll automatically apologize right before spitting out the next crap answer.
But she doesn't know this.
She's trying to warn me about something that scares her.
And she does not know that in trying to warning me, she is a) ineffective, and b) inflicting a different kind of harm.
Because my terrible, frustrating brain, with its ten different kinds of internal malware and software glitches, is looking over my shoulder at the future just in case. And so is she.
AI is misinformation and misinformation is hell.

i'm deeply amused by how nervous has a 10-point interest in money. while i relate this to the architecture and furnishing of the beaker manor - he sees what wealth has bought the beakers & what they choose to do with it - the thought of nervous taking up a lot of odd jobs and side hustles post-escape is something i'd love to see more of in fan works.

The people who get upset about pronouns in bios confuse me.
Like, even if we remove trans, enby, neopronoun users, et cetera from the equation; a hypothetical world where everyone is born with their body and gender lining up from the get go. Even in that hypothetical universe, it would still make sense to have them there. This is the internet, it's anonymous, how is anyone supposed to look at that username and picture of a cartoon bear and know I'm a cis woman? It's not like cis people like being misgendered either. If you want to talk about me to another person, you're gonna have to figure out what words to use somehow. It's just a courtesy, so people don't have to guess, and I don't have to answer the question "are you a guy or girl?" over and over and over again.
You can't see my face, can't hear my 12-year-old sounding voice. Are people just expected to parse my gender from my crazed ramblings? I could see them making out the Midwest accent and maybe the mental illness, but gender? Really? Really now?
Like, is someone supposed to see me write: "Went to Canada once and got to see the bagged milk. Good times." and be like "Ah yes, these are obviously the words of a female!"
