Hello there again, I offer some more overshadowed Macaque because he’s just too pretty. This time giving his glamoured form some appreciation.
Hoo boy this drawing took so long, 7+ hours. I started it immediately after I finished the last one but then I got sick so that kinda put a pause on it. Then I decided to further torture myself with drawing a background, seriously I struggle so much with them.
I don’t really know what his full glamoured outfit looks like so I tried my best to draw out something that looked ok, that being said I’m horrible at designing clothes so it’s nothing spectacular.
Overshadowed as is created by @lego-sand

Prologue - A Coin.
Well, I don't know who I made mad, but someone or something is mad at me. This morning didn't go as planned. First, my apartment building experienced some short-circuiting last night, which caused my alarm to reset and not go off. Consequently, I had to rush to get ready for work. However, when I went to get my clothes from the dryer, I discovered burned clothes due to the circuit issue and struggled to find something decent to wear. So, I ended up missing the bus, having to run to work, and being an hour late. Unfortunately, it rained on the way to work, but I made it nevertheless.
As soon as I entered the office my boss approached me. "Miss [Redacted]! I'm so sorry! You would not believe the morning I have had. But don't worry, once I dry myself off I will start cleaning the rooms." I started but was interrupted by my boss. "I'm sorry to interrupt you but we need to talk", she glances to her side as some of the other employees whisper to each other. " Preferably in my office", her eyes returned to me. "No, it's okay. We can talk here. If my lateness was the issue, I assure you it won't happen again!", I said, a little more desperately than I hoped for. I was praying it wasn't what I thought it was. Maybe she is going to promote me, or wants me to transfer! "It's not about that. It's about our company's policy. Can you please come to my office?", she asked again. Grabbing my bag tight, I responded " No. You can tell me here". My boss lets out a sigh before saying " Fine, I regret to inform you that you are being let go". And now I'm walking home, in the rain, without a job. Dang, I sound like a telenovela. I continue my dreary way home. This rain really came out of nowhere. I reach my city's little park as it seems to be hosting an event. Horrible timing on their part. Well, it's better than being out there in the rain.
I approach a large tent and lift the flap to uncover a soft, yellow light. Lanterns sit in front of small booths. There aren't many people here even though you'd expect more to be in here avoiding the rain, too. Some people go up to the booths while others watch. The booths have a variety of food, shops, and games. There is a group of kids going from booth to booth and the youngest of the group notices me. She shuffles over to me and asks " Why are you wet?" A little girl asked. "Oh... because it started to rain. And I didn't have an umbrella," I answered. "Why didn't you bring one?" She questioned. "Um. I didn't know it was going to rain," I respond. The group of kids seems to have noticed the youngest is missing. The oldest one spots the little girl next to me. She runs up to us. Starts to drag away the child as she scolds the little one. "What did I say about wandering off? Especially when you talk to foreigners!" Okay, rude. She drags the younger one away. While the little girl with brown hair waves goodbye. I give a small wave back. I notice a gentle blue light shining briefly in the corner of my eye. I turned to my left and noticed an empty booth with a blue coin placed on it. I walked towards the booth and examined the coin that was left behind. Curiously, I peeked over the booth and realized that the booth wasn't even set up yet. I picked up the coin and noticed it had no design on it. After looking around once more, I decided to take the coin with me and started to make my way out.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The rain had stopped, so I started to make my way home. I continued to explain the weird coin. But as I waited for the green light to cross the street. The light shines on the coin right to see "Make a Wish." A wish? So this might be for some wishing well at the event. Maybe I should have looked around a bit more before leaving. Hmm. What would I even wish for? Maybe a job? Nah, that's too boring! Let's put on my weeb for a moment. Okay, if I was some opening to an anime. Maybe I will be cliche and say I want to be stronger and destroy my enemies with the power of friendship! Hmm. If this is my protagonist moment, I want to be somewhat unique. Oh! I know! " I wish I could go to all my favorite fandoms! It would be cool to get to know the characters and explore their worlds!" I say as I flip my coin in the air. For a brief moment, the coin glows. Before I could catch the coin. Someone shoves me aside and grabs my purse. "Hey!" Ba Bump, Ba Bump.
Everything feels like it slowed down... I angrily try to follow the person, but soon realize my mistake when big bright lights blind my right side. My mind races a thousand thoughts at once. As I turn my head towards the light, my body moves forward. Ba Bump, Ba Bump.
I could hear the driver slam their brakes and try to swerve away from me... But it's too late... Time moved fast again as time stopped being in slow motion. And the vehicle slammed into me... Crash. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I jerk upward. I take a quick and sharp breath in and out. In and out. I attempt to even my breath. I think back to chasing the guy, the truck zooming at me, and the pain. A lot of it. Am I dead? I look all over. I might be in a cave. Everything looks rocky. Multiple tunnels are going to who knows where.
However, one of the tunnels has a faint blue glow. I stand up unsteadily and walk towards the gentle blue light. My steps are slow and shaky. At the end of the tunnel, I see an underground lake with all different types of blue crystals on the ceiling. Despite how beautiful it was, it was not what caught my eye.
It was the woman sitting on top of the lake. Which is already weird enough! She had a long blue gown with trims of gold all around it. It is so long that you can't even see her feet. She also had long dark blue hair that reminded me of waves crashing into each other. And on the top of her head is something close to a crown. It is attached to the back of her head with a circle headpiece that has two rings in it with many gems. Her dark skin is also decorated with gold. "You are here early." The woman softly spoke.
I jumped when she suddenly spoke as I wasn't expecting it. "You were supposed to help her. But I should have expected this since you humans are so flawed. I need to rework the plan for you to take her home when she comes of age." The lady stands. And turns to me. I finally get to see her face. She has the crown continue to the front of her face where it dangles. She has her eyes shut. Is she an anime character? The heck. Her lips are a dark blue. However, her eyelashes are light blue.
Dang, this woman really likes blue. "Since you have some time before you are needed, where do you want to go first?" I jumped again. Lord, I need to stop dozing off. Wait. "Huh?' I blinked slowly at her. Which she probably didn't even see.
"What do you mean? Actually, where am I? I'm dead...?" It's now just hitting me that I died. Pun not intended. "You are in the in-between. Yes, you died. Now, where do you wish to go?" She continues to speak softly and flatly. "The in-between? Like in-between death and life? Since you know, I have passed away." I am now curious about this in-between. "Yes and No. You are also in-between worlds but not. We are higher than gods, but not. We are just in-between." She whispered. "Do you wish to stay here? Or do you wish to go to another?" She continued. "To another? Do you mean another world?" "Of course. You can go to any world you wish. Just tell me its name." "Wait! Am I about to be iskaied!? OMG! I even got hit by truck-kun! And I can choose which world I can go to!?" I screamed. "Their so many to choose from! I'm having my anime/manga mommet! Wait! Can I have powers?! Or love interests?!" I exclaimed. "You can have that if you use your wish coin. And even more." She has been taking steps closer to me without me realizing it. "But only once per world. So choose wisely. If you would like, I could choose a world for you to go into."
I take a step away from her. "Wish coin?" "Yes, a wish coin. It's how you got here." She snapped her fingers. And that familiar coin appeared in her hands. "When you took my wish coin. As well as making a wish with it. You accepted my deal. Thus making you my newest wish child. And until I need you. You may have your fun in the other worlds." "A deal? What deal?!" I asked. "I am bored of this conversation. I will be sending you to a random world now. I will talk again soon." She turned away from me and started to walk back to her lake. "Hey! I'm not done asking-" Before I could finish my sentence. I see her raise her hand and snap her fingers. There is a bright glow underneath me. I feel myself falling as a bright light surrounds me. I scream as the world changes from an underground cave to a clear blue sky. Is she trying to kill me again! I continue to fall until I fall into cold water. Splash.
Ngl I feel that I’m one of the few who wants Bionicle returning in an official form in some capacity, but is against G1 specifically returning or even getting an official reimagining, as I instead wish for a G3 that takes more a Final Fantasy  like approach where it has elements that make it Bionicle (robots/cybernetic beings in a overtly non scifi setting, colorcoded group of characters associated with elements, a large focus on worldbuilding in particular societal and mythological one, MN standin, Makuta being there in some form etc) without being just “G1 but with a different hat” a lot of fan G3 concepts and even G2 to an extent was. So basically I want what Bara Magna, G2 (to much lesser extent as a good chunk of G2 was just stripped down G1) and that scrapped Bionicle Mythic concept tried to do, but better executed.
Like we need to face the facts: G1 will never get finished at this point, as what was left unfinished was Gregs stories. Greg has moved on to other stuff and seems to be content in leaving Bionicle in the past. Even if Greg wanted  to finish the serials I’m not sure if Lego would allow him to, especially now that he has been laid off. And as such I see an official ontiunation and ending possible. At best I could see Greg giving his blessing to a fancontiunation or handing the wriitng duties to someone else (which is very unlikely since again, Greg got laid off from Lego) but beyond that I don’t see much.
As for a reimagined/reimxed G1. dgmw I’d love a reimagined G1: for as much as I love G1, it’s a very flawed series, so making a remake/reimaging of G1 that would be the best version of G1 as possible would make me very happy. Thing is...I just don’t think my ideal G1 reimaging is possible. I have a very specific set of criterais I want and one of them is for it being aimed to an older audience (mid-late teens to young adults)...something I can’t really see LEGO doing in this day and age. If G1 got an official reimaging I could see it be something much more childish and stripped down. Like maybe not G2 levels of stripped down since G2 flopped once but like..even in best case scenario I feel G1 reimagining would be less “still G1 in core concept, plot and tone being grimdark lite but with more character moments, a well developed complex world and ACTUALLY HAVING A PLAN RATHER THAN THE HEADWRITER PULLING SHIT OUT OF HIS HAT HALF OF THE TIME” and more like Ninjago and Monkie Kid. And I like those two shows but that isn’t just what I want G1 remake to be like in all honesty.
So yeah. While I want Bionicle to return as a story rather than a little thing Lego remembers once in a while, I think it’s best to leave G1 in the past and focusing telling a new story that’s worth the moniker of Bionicle, and just creating a G3. Or maybe even a spiritual successor, whether its by Lego or some other party. I admit I don’t really like spiritual successors that just ape one thing and the ones we have for Bionicle aren’t really that good but I’d love to see more media that’s clearly inspired by Bionicle while also trying to be its own little thing.
Main Alias/Moniker: Cyclops
Legal Name: Scott Daniel Summers
Other Aliases: Cyke, Slim, Scotty, Summers, One-Eye, Shades, Hot Shot, Risky Business, Ray Charles, Buddy_Holly
Date of Birth: August 13, 1986 (Age: 19)
Status: Alive
Species: Mutant
Sex: Male
Gender: Cisgender
Height/Weight: 5’9’’ (1.75 m) / 162 lbs (74 kg)
Hair/Eye Color: Hair/Eye Color: Brown / Brown (Glowing Red Almost Constantly)
Timeline (1986 - 1996): Scott didn't want to write up his own file. Something about a conflict of interest. So here I am. I choose to believe that means he sees me as capable as himself, since Scott otherwise takes his duties as a TB pretty seriously. There are still a ton of personal details I wasn't able to get from Scott directly, but I did get from Jean with Scott's consent, and I'd say that's about as good a verification as any.
Scott has had a rough life, but what he went through wasn't what entirely made him into who he is. When corresponding with Alex, it sounds like Scott was always a bit of a quiet kid, the kind who preferred to play around with his LEGO bucket than go outside. The family moved around a lot, which probably didn't help Scott with making friends. That's probably why he seemed to cling to Alex in these days. Even though Alex was super-young back during this time, he still vividly remembers Scott being very protective, helping Alex with his math homework and cleaning him up whenever Alex got scuffed up. Poor Scott might have been able to catch up on his social skills, were it not for everything that came next.
Timeline (1996 -1998): Now, even those among us here on Stars & Stripes, the full details of what went down at the Starcore Incident remain unclear. We have a prevailing theory, but pending the approval of an actual, real-life alien onto the Brigade (Rick himself has been vouching pretty hard for this Marvel guy, so it shouldn't be too long), all we know for certain was that Canadian billionaire Peter Corbeau wanted to get humankind into space, and someone else didn't want that. And because Chris Summers was the chosen pilot for the spacecraft and invited the rest of the family to the lunch site to watch him fly off, they all got caught in the crossfire.
First, Scott watched the spacecraft carrying his dad get shot out of the sky. Next, his mother rushed him and Alex into a convoy and rushed off the launch site as it was being bombarded from above. Scott's mom didn't get far and was swerved off the road. Pinned to the car from the wreck, she pleaded to Scott to lead Alex into the woods and keep him safe, but the brothers only made it out a little bit before Alex broke down in hysterics. As Scott tried to tend to Alex, he saw from afar two figures aiming a shot. When Scott shoved Alex out of the way, the blast that hit the ground then flung Scott into the air, striking his head against a boulder and knocking him out cold.
What happened next is much less speculative, but no less nasty. That monster Essex, he somehow found Scott and took him to his clinic in Arkansas. Over the next year, Scott was kept in the clinic's basement, sedated but conscious enough to be subjected to Essex's experiments, all to extract and toy with Scott's X-Gene. What finally pulled Scott out of it was Jean, when she became a guest of the clinic herself. The connection was hazy, but the mental impression of a red-headed girl around his age gave Scott enough focus to finally escape. His optic blasts cleared an entire concrete wall, and Scott blindly ran off into the Ozarks.
Waking up a year later, clear across the country, and suffering not only from intense migraines, but what seemed like lasers bursting out from his eyes to say that Scott was overwhelmed would be an understatement. This was how he fell prey to Jack Winters, a jewel thief who was operating in the area at the time. Winters came up with half the solution to Scott's optic blasts, and gave him a nice pair of Ray-Bans. They weren't as effective as his later custom ruby lenses, with Scott literally burning through his shades over time, but it was enough to entrust Scott to Winters, who became his lookout and accomplice in his crimes.
Scott's blasts would still sometimes get out of control, and enough random arsons made in this stealing spree caught the attention of Agent Duncan, who then reported the situation to the Professor. It all came to a head when Duncan assembled the local law enforcement to corner Winters in his latest raid. Desperate, Winters opted to hold Scott hostage, only to find his body becoming immobilized. The Professor then telepathically instructed Scott to exit the store, where the two then had a more proper introduction once the cops rushed in to detain Winters.
Timeline (1998 - 2004): With the help of Agent Duncan and Professor Xavier, Scott was sent to live with his grandparents in Alaska, where he lived a much more stable Iife for the next few years. Scott still wasn't much of a social butterfly, but his traumas didn't completely cripple him, either. During this time, Scott got super-introspective, getting into meditation and martial arts (Huge fan of Bruce Lee). He also got involved in his school's sailing and journalism clubs, which is how he met his one and only high school friend and confidante, Lee Forester. Speaking with Lee, Scott around this time didn't sound much different from how the rest of us know him for, save for being even more stiff and reserved. And, knowing what he just went through back then, I honestly don't blame him.
This was also around the time Scott first got into sleuthing. Not only having been victimized by forces he didn't understand, but also just insanely curious about his mutant nature, Scott first fell into his habit of never being able to leave things be. It's probably what ended up having him become one of Rick's earliest recruits into the Brigade. Scott never managed to uncover the full truth of what truly went down at Starcore, but he did at least track down Alex. He chose to remain with his adoptive family in Vancouver, but the two brothers remained in touch.
Speaking of keeping in touch, Scott maintained contacts with Xavier all throughout this time. The Professor hooked Scott up with his first pair of ruby shades, and frequently held check-ups on Scott's condition and his own private testing of his mutant power, and Xavier was completely open to any and all questions Scott had about mutants, of which there was apparently a lot. I can personally attest to this, the Professor is one of the few people Scott can become an absolute chatterbox about. He trusts him out of all of the original team. So when the Professor called Scott to come to New York following graduation to help him with a social study on the mutant experience, Scott left Alaska without a second thought.
The first day he stepped foot into the Mansion, Scott was met with his literal dream girl. Apparently, his face grew as red as his glasses, and then when Jean attempted to greet him telepathically he then rushed out of the room. The two tried again with the introductions eventually, but it would still take a bit more time for Scott to open up to Jean. All the other non-mind-readers of the First Class, it was a whole lot smoother. Scott got along with Hank pretty well. The two bonded not only on mutant issues (Scott with the social aspect, Hank with the genetics), but also because the two now had a sparring partner with their martial arts hobbies. There was a brief pecking order once Wren entered the picture, one that Scott didn't feel like dignifying and let Wren believe she was the leader of their little group, for the time being at least. The two even worked together when Bobby got into his legal troubles, and because of that Bobby was especially fond of the two of them.
Soon enough, Scott found himself in a friend group he could trust and depend on, and he believed in the Professor's whole dream wholeheartedly. So when the Brotherhood invaded Santo Marco and created an an international incident, it was a lot for Scott to take in. He looked for the Professor for guidance, only for Xavier to shut himself off entirely, taking the whole situation even worse. Hank told Scott and the others of the whole history between Xavier and Magneto, and the story sparked something in Scott. With a little encouragement from Jean, Scott first rallied the rest to take action, and then cajoled Xavier to let them take their training to the test. It took a lot of convincing, but eventually the group piled into the Professor's fancy private jet, ready to sneak into Santo Marco and change history.
Who or what is a Hirunda?
I got tagged by the loveliest @soupum! Now, without further ado... Let's. Start. Sharing!
Who were you named after?
Shockingly, no one in particular: my parents had 2 names in mind and when they saw me for the first time, I didn't look like a Louis.
As for my inter-webs moniker, it was originally the PSN account my dad set-up on the first ps3 we had way back when. Since I mostly played LittleBigPlanet on his account, I hijacked it and the name Hirunda kinda stuck everywhere I went.
When was the last time you cried?
The last time I cried was when my dad picked me up on my last day working at a Korean fried chicken shop. I had just got rejected for another job I thought I had in the bag, the current job sucked ass for a variety of reasons and I was so exhausted I decided to not show up for my 4 weeks notice period (I had given my resignation on the same day). I was in a good position to fall back and bounce back (which I did) and things are okay now.
Working in hospitality is a lot, be extra nice & patient with hospitality and service workers.
Do you have kids?
Nuh-uh
What sports do you play/did you play?
I used to do Karate, got up to brown belt which was neat. The lessons and the vibe were chill. I stopped when we moved half-way around the world and I couldn't find a good dojo to continue. Now I rarely do sports.
Do you use Sarcasm?
Oh yes
we use it a fair bit at home for laughs and giggles, never being mean spirited.
First thing you notice about people?
Faces maybe? I don't usually think about that sort of thing too much, I wonder if I should.
Do you have any talents?
I'm decent enough at troubleshooting tech-adjacent issues. I'd also say I'm a decent actor*
*[Citation needed]
Scary Movies or Happy Endings?
I've warmed up to scary movies over the last year once I realized horror wasn't limited to jumpscares, though I'm a real sucker for happy endings.
Where were you born?
(in a) Bath, England (hehehehe)
What are your hobbies?
Playing video games
Acting. Recently got back into it with community theatre and I love it. I had to back out of a production because I was juggling too much at the time. It's a lot of fun but it wears you out, taking a break from it now.
Playing video games
Lego. Loved the stuff since I was a kid, still love it as an adult
Making video games (every full moon or so)
Did I mention playing video games?
Do you have any pets?
Yes! His name is Kedi: He is as much of an awful little scamp as he is lovingly irreplaceable
Tumblr media
Exhibit A: The culprit
How tall are you?
Somewhere in the 1m 80~82cm range, I don't recall my precise height.
What was you favourite subject in school?
Drama(/Theatre): the only subject where fun was allowed! >:3
Second place is prob Maths
Dream job?
I think the world would have to become Star Trek (minus the militarism) before I call any job a dream job. Is space communism too big of an ask for this world?
And so, it is with a mighty dose of foolish idealism that I end this post. Imma pass the torch to @hiverious and maybe @pwdev, no obligations though.
Each time the zombies touch the creature, you will lose one life. As you start to log extra hours you'll perceive why the adjustments have developed and why everybody enjoys taking part in in new worlds. A new X- Males film is sure to be proven this yr, and as one of many more in style mutants, Wolverine will certainly be one of many picks come costume season. Lego games bought the most hit to its all film series this yr. What kind of games are you going to weblog about? That said, we fairly considerably know that Lumia is lifeless and that the company has a one p.c share of the cell market now, so a relaunch known as for if the company is going to try to make a comeback, so if not now, in some unspecified time in the future count on the corporate to begin branding all its products with all of the Flooring title, significantly as Google is carrying out using the Pixel and Apple along with the "i" moniker.
There is no doubt that 3D printing has performed a role on the planet we all know at this time, nevertheless it additionally targets a really particular demographic of individuals. As an illustration, infants and toddlers between 0-2, need to develop very important attributes comparable to mobility, dexterity, autonomy, understanding the process of cause and effect and so forth. Due to this fact for every particular bracket, Lego creates age-particular toys so that youngsters benefit immensely and experience a fulfilling play time. It'll fulfill energy routinely. A new-era Robocop was seen in theaters very lately so youngsters will almost certainly need to wear the costume pretty soon. This laptop file will then be despatched to a 3D printer, the place the clever laptop on the printer will acknowledge the dimensions. Before a product may be 3D printed, it needs to be drawn up on the computer by an engineer or a designer. It's a pc which is straightforward to make use of and it has a strong processor and reminiscence. Use the mouse or arrow keys to control the Ninja Miner. The Great Sage Equal to Heaven my beloved!!!
They gotta stop making these new cartoon characters so cool and relatable, I can’t keep adding comfort characters to my list of favs. Fun fact, I did the doodles first and the full digital drawing was just to pass time while I wait for my laundry to finish. Even funner fact, I got into a water balloon fight today, I felt powerful holding balloons in front of dry opponents.
LEILA BARAK
age: 29.
gender & pronouns: cis female & she/her.
neighborhood: university heights.
occupation: inventor.
fc: ayça ayşin turan.
BIOGRAPHY
trigger warnings: parent death.
Growing up in a tight knit family, Leila was as connected to her siblings and parents as a kid could be. They were her whole world when she was young, attached at the hip to her older sister Dilan and clinging to her parents at all times. Even from a young age, it was obvious that Lelia wasn’t the most outgoing, rarely leaving her family’s side. Around her family she was a bright light, happy to talk and chatter like any kid would, but the second she was outside of the house, she closed off and grew quiet, exhibiting a deep shyness.
Staring school was a difficult adjustment for the young girl. Not being with her parents or siblings left her lost and making bonds with others didn’t come easily for her. Even in elementary school, Leila wasn’t very social, preferring to spend her time in a corner reading or tinkering with some electronic. Her teachers were concerned about her, but even with thorough testing there didn’t seem to be anything wrong with Leila. She was just quiet, someone more interested in learning and building than she was in making friends or playing on the playground.
As she grew older, the same trends stuck. Leila never really learned to adjust socially. Outside of her family and the occasional friend of her siblings, Leila didn’t have many friends of her own to speak of. More often than not she was labeled the weird girl, the nerd, any number of harsh monikers that kids in her classes came up with. The teasing only sent her further into her shell and by middle school, Leila had simply accepted that she wasn’t going to be the girl with friends at the lunch table or people to hang out with after school. Instead, she threw herself into what she enjoyed. Though her parents weren’t exceptionally well versed in mechanics, they supported her in her love for it all. What started out as Lego sets and puzzles turned into robotics and engineering kits for teenagers.
At the tail end of middle school, tragedy struck the Barak family, their father passing away and leaving them all with an empty place in their lives. Leila dealt with it all by closing down further, pushing even her family away at times. She would spend hours in her room alone building things and breaking them down, letting her grieving process work itself out through her creativity. It was during this transition to high school that Leila more or less stopped attending to her schoolwork. She began failing out of a lot of her classes, homework left unfinished and her time spent with anything but what she was meant to be doing. It only made things harder in the wake of their father’s passing and before long, Leila left high school to finish her schooling out at home.
No longer tied down to the restrictions of the regular school day, Leila flew through her classes. She could sit down, focus, and finish everything without having to worry about the day to day drama of high school. While it kept her from building the social bonds that she probably needed and meant she couldn’t branch out and find her way with the various clubs and robotics competitions a normal school would have offered, it was where Leila needed to be. With the accelerated homeschooling program, Leila finished high school by the age of sixteen.
While college was an option on the table, Leila decided to forgo further education, instead opting to just go at it on her own. She already had several inventions that she’d created over the years that were viable products to sell and knew that she could create more. It was a rough few years to start, Leila living at home and not seeming to go anywhere, but eventually her big break came. One of her inventions was presented to a large engineering company and they bought the patent outright, offering Leila a position at the company in their research and development department.
Leila accepted the money for the patent, but turned down the job itself. She had grown so used to working on what she wanted, when she wanted, that it just didn’t seem right to her. Instead she used the money to buy a small space to start her own workshop, creating and inventing anything that her mind could think of. Once she was started and her name was out there, it became easy to find work. Most things she worked on were passion projects, things she would make and put on the market to potential buyers. Other things became puzzles from other companies that hired her to solve problems that their own engineers couldn’t.
It was a simple life, a quiet life, but at times a lonely life. When things with her sister’s marriage went up in flames, it didn’t take more than a few weeks of feeling utterly alone before Leila up and moved her workshop out to Providence Peak to be closer to Dilan. It allowed her to help her sister pick up the pieces after being left at the alter and brought her a sense of comfort again. She’s now been in the area for several years and has continued her work. A number of her creative endeavors have ended up around the town, bettering things to some small degree everywhere you look.
Freshly twenty-eight, Leila is starting to realize that perhaps she’s not quite as content as she’d like to be. She loves her job, she loves her family, but seeing everyone around her grow and flourish, she’s worried that her life has grown stagnant. Without her career, she’s not sure what else she has. Her life has been spent in a corner and Leila is ready to see what the world has to offer.
Epoch Xperience Interviews Nordic Weasel Founder, Ivan Sorensen
Tumblr media
Mr. Sorensen needs no real introduction to many miniature wargamers. His company, Nordic Weasel Games, has taken the historical miniatures gaming world by storm, and he’s become the force on Wargames Vault. His formula of “substance over flash” has produced good games for a very reasonable price, and he has taken full advantage of PDF technology to produce a quality product one can buy and have in your (virtual hands) the next day.
Without further ado, I give you Ivan Sorensen:
Biography
My name is Ivan Sorensen, and I am a game designer and self-publishing writer of miniatures games, as well as the odd role-playing game. Under the moniker of Nordic Weasel Games, I have worked as a game writer for close to 7 years.
I am an avid player of board games, miniatures games, role-playing games, video games, and anything else I can get my hands on. I have spent half my life on this planet in Denmark, where I was born, and half in the United States, where I currently reside. I am married, have one kid and two cats named Scruffy and Lancelot.
Unlike a lot of historical games writers, many of my formative miniatures gaming experiences actually came from science fiction games, so I suppose that has given me a little bit of a different perspective.
So, how did you get started in writing rules? Was there an “aha” moment, or did you fall into it?
Tumblr media
At the risk of sounding cheesy, I have basically always created little dice and board games for myself, using Lego pieces or other things that we had available, usually based on video games I had read about in magazines or other ideas like that.
Tumblr media
When I was 12 or so, I remember getting a copy of White Dwarf magazine from a local gaming club I had joined, and it blew my mind. We had some limited exposure to the idea of space marines and all these things from the Milton Bradley Hero Quest and Space Crusade board games, but the idea of battle games played without a board, using miniatures and dice was too much to resist. I knew I had to get into this, and as I had no money for it, I sat down to write a game I could play with my Space Crusade figures, which would look as much like what I imagined Warhammer 40.000 would be like.
Since then, I had pretty much always been the “rules guy” in the gaming groups I was part of, whether we were playing miniatures games or RPG’s, so it just came naturally over time, I suppose. As I got access to the internet and later got access to ordering things from the UK or US, I devoured every game I could get my hands on and was even remotely interested in.
The start to writing games that were any good was my own attempt at creating a World War 1 game system (titled Trench Storm). I had shared it online, and to my great surprise, it began catching people’s attention and got a (very) small following, with people even purchasing miniatures to play it. Eventually, I was contacted by the US distributor for IT Miniatures, who offered to print it to promote their 20mm figure range. The rest is, as they say, history. Once in a great while, a copy of that game still pops up on eBay, it seems!
How did Nordic Weasel Games come to be?
So that story took place right around the time I moved to the United States. After moving, I had a lengthy period where I did not have my work permit yet, so game writing seemed like an obvious distraction, resulting in Fast and Dirty, a sci-fi rules set that you still see mentioned online here and there.
Tumblr media
As the years went on, I kept tinkering and building things but mostly for my own enjoyment. Sometime during the fall of 2013, I started seriously working on a new game system for WW2 skirmish actions that I felt had some real potential to go places. At the time, I worked at a relatively dead-end middle management job at an incredibly toxic information technology company. You know the sort of job, where you have been there for too long, and you hate every minute of it.
Come the spring, I decided to take a gamble that I could make enough money from game sales to make it worth pursuing and quit. I figured if I could find a way to do it without putting money on the line, then if it all bombed, I could just walk away and find something else to do in life.
Consequently, Five Men in Normandy was released on June 15, 2014, and as of today, we are still here!
Tumblr media
What is in the future for Nordic Weasel?
Hopefully, many big things! The biggest priority for 2021 specifically is to get into print books, though there are a lot of stumbling blocks in terms of layout requirements and so on.
I always keep a list of projects I would like to do, though I try not to talk about them too much in case they fall through. I am the sort of guy who always starts with 20 ideas, so by the time the unworkable ones have been weeded out, there are 2 or 3 left.
What I can say is that I am actively looking at fantasy miniatures battles, and I would love to do more WW1 and Black Powder era gaming material.
The real big question is that I am also very much at a point where there are just too many things to do it all alone. I cannot write 4 or 5 new games, support an entire back catalogue, and update old titles all by my lonesome, so I look forward to trying to solve that in the future. I suppose this is a good problem to have, but it is certainly also an intimidating one!
Is there a period of history you want to write rules for but have not?
We have worked extensively with the two world wars and the black powder era in general, as well as 20th century-to-modern era battles, and with Knyghte, Pyke and Sworde we even delved into medieval warfare.
Tumblr media
The one that stands out as something that would be fun to do is World War 1 air combat, complete with goggles and scarf flapping in the wind. A little romanticized sure, but great fun, and there is a lot of fantastic models available.
For a historical era I have not touched on at all, I would say that while I have done games that cover it among other 19th century conflicts, a dedicated American Civil War set is something I would be very keen to do.
There are a lot of fantastic rules out there for the period, of course, but I feel like the “Weasel” approach of being solo-friendly and campaign-oriented could carve out a nice space of that market. Plus, I find the era quite fascinating. Growing up in Denmark, I was never really raised with a particular view of the conflict, but having married into a proud Vermont family, it is, of course, unavoidable.
Can you tell our readers what goes into rules writing?
I think this is something that is intensely personal, and the rationale for writing something can be varied: It may be due to sensing an opening in the hobby space that does not seem to be catered to currently. It may be that I have a personal passion for a given setting or era, or it may simply be that I have a clever game mechanic and want to build a game around it.
The process for me usually starts with sketching out a page or two of keywords, mechanics, and things I’d like to hit on a notepad. Then I work on building it out with simple sketches for the main areas of the mechanics: Activations, movement, shooting, morale, and so forth. Basically, carving out the cornerstones of the game system. At this stage, it is entirely possible it feels like it’s not going anywhere, and it goes in the bin.
If the core idea seems to have merit in this skeleton form, it’s time to test it out with some generic troops and see if it actually feels fun on the table. From there, you just build out from it: Get other people to read and play it, read it out loud to yourself, etc. Figure out what parts need ironing out and improving and which are good.
It is really all an iterative process. Once I know the game has legs to stand on, I start writing out the table of contents in advance, so I can “fill in the blanks” as I go. If I know I am going to have a section later for off-map support, I can keep that in mind when I am developing each piece of the mechanics and so forth.
Eventually, any project hits “The Suck (TM).” This is whatever part you hate doing the most, whether it is layout or proofreading or points systems or whatever. For me, it is terrain rules, funny enough. I never read that section of a rulebook, and I never enjoy writing it, but you must. “The Suck” is where your game will probably die because if you let it overcome you, you will put the book down, and every time you click on the word processor, you will immediately be faced with it. The best way to defeat “The Suck” in my experience is caffeine and not letting up: When it starts rearing its ugly head, it is time to keep going and don’t stop until you are through with it.
Has desktop publishing and PDF only supplements changed the face of the hobby? Has it affected the quality of the product we see today?
Absolutely yeah. It’s not that long ago that a game being available in PDF was a novelty, whereas today, if a game is NOT available in PDF, you are going to lose sales.
I think the barrier of entry has also dropped dramatically. Even a basic word processing package can churn out a PDF document that you can distribute online or sell. Of course, with proper page layout software, you can achieve much greater results (as some of my friends are rarely missing a chance to tell me), but you need to examine what your skill limit is. Any tool has a skill cap, to borrow a video game term. If you are not currently good enough at what you do to push up against the limitations of your software, burning 200 dollars on new apps will not make your books any better.
It is funny, though, because the wargaming field is so diverse in the type of things we see. You can pick up relatively big-name games that are incredibly plain-looking: Black and white, no art, rudimentary layout. Then right next to it, you see a PDF that is full-color, original artwork, and gorgeous. And the two can be viewed as equal value to the audience.
Of course, eye candy DOES sell, but I think once you are beyond the Warhammer circles, gamers become a lot more content-focused.
What are your favorite historical periods and why?
The 19th Century, the two world wars and the Russian Civil War.
Tumblr media
Really, the whole era from circa 1910 to 1925 or so is fascinating to me: It is, of course, the transition of the old, romanticized world to the world of modern warfare, as well as being incredibly diverse in the sort of things you can see. The Russian Civil War sees tanks and armored cars, partisan bands, nationalist militias, Red and White guards, Cossack cavalry armies, Anarchists, and anything else you can shake a stick at. It is really a wargamers heaven for finding odd units to model up on the gaming table.
Honestly, my love of history, in general, comes from one source: “All Quiet on the Western Front.” I think anyone with a passion for history has that moment where they realize that history is not about abstract concepts and kings and dates but is about real people who lived and breathed and had dreams and hopes. “All Quiet” was that for me, and it left a life-long impression on me when I read it as a teenager a few years from the age of the characters in the book.
What do you see for the future of historical miniature wargaming?
Oof, that is a dangerous question. I think I managed to predict the rise of “Warband” level games (games where you play a small force in skirmish actions and with some level of character progression between games). Right now, that idea has set the fantasy and sci-fi miniatures scenes on fire, with everyone churning out their own version of the concept.
In historical gaming, there are elements of it, but it has not been embraced to the same extent, possibly due to the grognard bias against skirmish games. I think if I had to put money on something, I would say watch out for historical skirmish games with campaign aspects or character progression in the next year or three.
I also think solo gaming is going to continue to gain in popularity and respectability, with more games developed primarily or even specifically for solo play. I am super excited to see this field because there is a lot of things that can be done here with how enemies arrive on the table, fog of war, and so forth, which is not possible in a conventional opposed game.
Tumblr media
Playtesting, how important is it?
Very, but it’s also very misunderstood. I see people post all the time on forums about how they have been testing their game rules for 5 years. That sounds very impressive, but if you are only getting together 3 or 4 times a year in that time frame, you are basically starting over each time. Additionally, just playing the game with your own group is fine to iron out the basic problems of a game, but it will lose its value very quickly.
Tumblr media
To get actual feedback, give the game to people who cannot ask you questions and let them figure it out. Now your text must stand on its own feet and must work without you being there to explain the intentions. That is the real test. I would say three games played by strangers is worth more than ten games with your usual Saturday group.
Of course, tracking down people who can understand the rules, will play the game, [and] report back to you, AND aren’t crazy is a challenge. If you post online, 50 people will say they would love to, and of those, two will read the book. Once you find reliable people who can give you good feedback, cling to them for dear life.
 What are the benefits and pitfalls of self-publishing your own wargaming rules?
The biggest advantage is, of course, that you are in charge. What you want in the book goes, if you want a supplement, it will happen, and so forth. Additionally, your game will reflect what you wanted it to be. I think in [self-publishing], you get a lot clearer creative visions and indie gamers tend to gravitate towards that: A game that has something to say on the topic is extremely attractive, even if you disagree with a particular conclusion.
I try to do as much myself as I can, though, of course, I do rely on outside sources for things like artwork, feedback, etc. Part of that is that this way, I know I can support the product down the road: If I want to fix a rule where we came up with a better way of doing it, or I want to add a new section, I can do that.
The downside, of course, is that you are on your own: Your art is as good as your own wallet can make it, your book looks as good as you can make it (unless you pay for it), and so forth. You also must promote it yourself. If you are writing for something like Osprey, they have marketing power and money to put behind the project.
Anything else you would like to say to our readers?
Before you write a game, ban yourself from reading any game on the same topic for a few months. If you are writing a WW2 tank game, put all your WW2 games in a box and do not open it. You should be spending that time immersing yourself in the topic in the form of books, music, documentaries, or anything else. Never ever another game.
Also, it cannot hurt to blast some metal albums, at least in my experience.
