Victor finds Lucas sitting in the living room, seeming to be on the verge of tears and reluctant to talk about whatever happened.
Upon closer inspection, he realizes that Lucas has a picture book in his lap.
It's The Scarecrow by Cynthia Rylant.
(Olivia recommended it to him for book club. She wanted to hear his thoughts on metaphors and their usage in children's literature, and possibly talk about The Neverending Story next week, but...)
Victor picks up the book and skims it, glancing over a few pages, then realizes why it had such an impact on Lucas.
He tries to make his own dinner for once and burns it. He ends up microwaving ramen and coaxing Lucas into playing Mario Kart. They don't say anything, they just play Victor's favorite courses, and Lucas brakes at the finish line to let Victor win.
Victor falls asleep at his desk, and Lucas spends the night reading books on psychology.

But at least I’m not fourteen
anymore,
talking to other people’s husbands
avoiding my stepfather
drinking all of the clear stuff I can
find in my
mother’s cabinet,
washing it down with talcum powder
and orange juice
passing out in parks
or at football games
and getting the dark, dark chills
in the early hours of the morning.
Staying forever far from home
completely, completely at sea.
Knowing God has cut me out
jagged, loose, wild.

Decent movie. It could’ve done without Stuckey. But still. Decent movie.

📽️ Sweet Home Alabama (2002)
This is one of my mom’s favorite romcoms. I can see why she likes it (hello Patrick Dempsey and Josh Lucas), but this is not a movie that comes to my mind when I think of my favorite romcoms. Don’t get me wrong, though, I do actually like it. Just not as much as Leap Year or How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days. There are so many great moments in this movie, but I can’t get over the fact that Reese Witherspoon’s character is annoying to me. Patrick Dempsey’s character, on the other hand, is amazing. Josh Lucas’s is okay, but Patrick Dempsey’s is the best. Anyway, this movie is worth a watch, just expect a lot of fluff and predictability.
Sex/nudity: 2/10 (kissing, sexual innuendoes)
Language: 2/10 (no f-words, other strong language is used infrequently)
Violence: 1/10 (one punch)
Overall rating: 6/10
