Coach Carter (2005)
Tumblr media
There are only so many ways a film about a basketball team can go. What really matters isn’t the plot but the characters who populate it. Thankfully, Coach Carter has a strong pillar at its centre. With a compelling sports story and a couple of decent side characters to add some spice, it’s a basketball movie worth seeing.
Based on a true story, Ken Carter (Samuel L. Jackson) takes a coaching job at Richmond high school. The players are rude, disrespectful and in need of discipline so he hands them contracts they must sign and agree to in order to play. The players, which include Kenyon (Rob Brown), the coach’s son Damien (Robert Ri’chard), Timo (Rick Gonzalez), Jason (Channing Tatum), and “Worm” (Antwon Tanner), must attend all their classes and sit in the front row, wear suits and ties to all games, clean up their dialogue and maintain a 2.3 grade point average. When Carter begins enforcing his rules, he rubs many people the wrong way.
Samuel L. Jackson is at his best when he’s screaming at people or bossing them around, and that’s what he does here. He rules the basketball court with an iron fist, tossing punishment to anyone who mouths off without mercy. Coach Carter is fun to watch because of him. It’s also enjoyable because you can see the logic in his method. Ken Carter has the best intentions in mind and no one else seems to believe in these players. When they do, it’s only because of their basketball abilities. Things don’t always go well with his team but it just makes you more eager to see him double-down on his efforts. You don’t want him to change or grow. You want him to inspire the others and when he does, you feel great.
The players he’s coaching also help make the film enjoyable. They’ve got their own little dramatic stories, the best of which is Kenyon's. Until recently, he didn’t think his future would amount to much. He’s got a baby on the way with his girlfriend, Kyra (Ashanti). Now that going to college might actually be a possibility, he’s caught between the plans that were thrust upon him by circumstances, and the one he wants to craft for himself. There’s a compelling story there. The other players and their stories accentuate how important it is for them to get out of the rut they’ve allowed themselves to fall into. At least, most of them do. Carter’s son, Damien, for example has few scenes. You’d think with the controversy his father faces when he stands his ground about demanding his players keep up their grade or skip games, he’d have something to say.
At points, Coach Carter milks its drama a little much. Every teacher at Richmond high school is depicted as lazy and without any hope for their students, whatsoever. Director Thomas Carter tries so hard to make us outraged you smell the phoniness and it prevents the film from being all that it could be.
Whether the story of Ken Carter followed the events depicted in this film or not, this is a formulaic picture. You won’t mind too much, as the central performance by Sam Jackson and his character gives you something to root for, look forward to, and look up to as well. (April 18, 2019)

very UO but if they couldn’t bring back Jake, they should have stuck Peyton and Julian together as endgame over Leyton! Julian and Peyton had already supposedly been in love, they both like cities (LA, NYC etc) and it makes sense they’d live there due to their careers, and both Peyton and Julian for a lot of their time on the series seemed ambivalent about starting a family. Also, Julian is smart and on the introverted side like Lucas but a little goofy like Jake - a combination of the traits Payron goes for! Meanwhile, we saw so clearly in season 5 that Brooke and Lucas both loved being back in one tree hill, they both seem to have jobs they can do anywhere, they both very much prioritize settling down and having a family, they were already unofficially co-parenting Angie, they still have that seemingly effortless and magical connection, they balance each other out perfectly…I could go on!
Honestly, I wouldn't have minded that one bit. First of all, Peyton deserved a million times better than Lucas by the time he finally got around to choosing her. She was lacking any sort of spine or self respect when she ran to that airport. As irritating as I found her character for large stretches of season 5, ultimately she wasn't in the greatest place and only imagined that her happiness could be attainable if she won Lucas back. Now to get back to what you were saying. I definitely think Peyton was better off and would have thrived most living away from Tree Hill in a bigger city where her dreams could really take off. I mean, the show really said that because Peyton wasn't exactly where she wanted to be at age 22 that this made her a failure and retroactively meant her decision not to rush down the aisle at age 19 had been a terrible, awful, shameful mistake. Seasons 6 and 7 Julian would have made a lot of sense as a partner for the ambitious Peyton who had faced so much trauma and pain in her hometown. STRONGLY agreed about your points re: Peyton and Julian being ambivalent and sometimes even negative about settling down in Tree Hill compared to Brooke and Lucas who genuinely loved it there and couldn't imagine raising their families elsewhere. I'm aware every aspect of this was unintentional considering the possibility of a Brucas endgame post season 3 was basically taboo, but in terms of compatibility Brooke/Lucas and Peyton/Julian made the most sense. If we couldn't have Jake back for Peyton, obviously. In the end, Peyton still left Tree Hill, something Lucas never wanted. And Julian settled for staying in Tree Hill for Brooke even though he'd rather be in LA. Relationships are all about compromise, but it's interesting how their situations sort of parallel. You should go on, because I love reading your thoughts! I genuinely think if not for Peyton's continued interest in Lucas and Lucas having an unfortunate history of making the same mistakes over and over again, Lucas would have eventually ended up with Brooke. Season 5 Brucas had such an ease around each other. Their goals lined up perfectly. The chemistry was still there. Their communication was really solid and both went out of their way to emotionally support the other. Maybe it's because the pressure was off considering neither was expressing their feelings, but you see them taking care of Angie and the way Lucas considered proposing to Brooke and instinctively know that they could have had it all. It's really depressing.
#Anonymous#I know it was all for the sake of the cliffhanger but I'll never be over Lucas desperately wanting to marry someone and fantasizing about#his potential marriage to Brooke#Peyton and Lindsey make sense#Lucas literally almost married Lindsey and Peyton spent the entirety of season 5 chasing Lucas down expressing remorse over rejecting#his marriage proposal#Brooke was never technically his love interest at any point#They hadn't dated since the first episode of season 4 and the last time Lucas tried to make something happen in the flashback set between#seasons 4 and 5 Brooke turned him down#But they were taking care of Angie together and he was this emotional support for Brooke because it's exactly where he wanted to be#And I mean the airport scene where he shows up after Brooke said she could say goodbye to Angie on her own#Lucas clearly at least at the back of his mind was thinking about Brooke as a romantic prospect even if it was unspoken#I'll die on this hill especially since most fans decry the idea that Lucas was ever legitimately in love with someone besides Peyton#The fantasy was kind of bullshit because out of all of Lucas's possible wives Brooke is the only one who in reality would want to#live in Tree Hill permanently but it's like he needed to convince himself Brooke was all wrong for him as did Mark Schwahn#Like sorry you accidentally wrote them as perfect for each other for two seasons and then later had to walk it back with poor writing#And felt Peyton should give up any sort of independence and free thinking to be right for Lucas#Ignore this because these tags are a mess

Watching One Tree Hill along with the podcast really has given me new insight, specifically to Peyton
And I feel like I’ve imprinted on her like Jacob to a rutabaga
That girl faces so much trauma in such a short span of time and has no one around for her.
I just want to listen to sad music with her and be there with her. That’s all Peyton ever needed, someone to be there.

OTH Rewatch Review 3x07
IIIIIII DON'T WANNA BE ANYTHING OTHER THAN WHAT I'VE BEEN TRYNA BE LATELYYYYYYYYY
Jesus Christ
So, like, here's the thing about this fucking Inception dream sequence. What is happening? Is Nathan dreaming about Haley making out with Brooke after waking up from a nightmare about Lucas and Chris in bed together after Lucas woke up from dreaming about being in bed with Brooke? Because it's a dream within within a dream. I don't know what your subconscious is like Nathan.
Nathan's grin. I mean, technically you've slept with both of them. AND HALEY'S SISTER.
"What is she doing talking to that troll?" "By troll do you mean Peyton?" Oh, Haley. How I love you sometimes.
Because Peyton fucking SUCKS.
"I'm over possessive-best-friends-with-weird-lesbian energy. And Haley!" That was actually a good delivery but if anyone has the lesbian energy here, it's Brooke and Rachel.
"Well, at least somebody wanted me." Oh, preteen Zal was SO frustrated with this ENTIRE storyline.
"HALEY, YOUR BOYFRIENDS ARE HERE." lol.
"You look so..." "Overdressed." Good delivery. But also Haley, my girl, the SUN is out, why are you wearing a little black dress?
I mean "little black dress" this is still OTH.
They really felt uncomfortable in the clothes they had to wear??
This is so dumb, she's clearly going out with Nathan and Haley too, Lucas.
YOU ALL HAVE CELL PHONES. CALL HER.
Ugh, Skills.
"I've been on kinky dates before..." with who? I guess s1 Nathan would've done something weird.
Remember how s1 Nathan was like a legit emotionally, verbally abusive villain?
"Let's spring [the senior in the nursing home]! It's just a couple of hours, what harm could it do?" If this was a dark comedy, he'd die.
Chris tipping a random woman on the beach and slapping her ass is just ... ugh. She should've slapped him. Alas, Mark Schwahn.
Haley having a quiet but profound breakdown. Brooke, "It's OK. Let's just go to the mall." And she is being helpful and it is very sweet but that's also hilarious. Uhhh, sorry that your wedding spot is being destroyed, let's just go to the mall instead. You know? Nothing profoundly sad happens at the mall.
"I can't believe she's doing this." IT WAS A GROUP DATE, LUCAS.
"This guy has caused a lot of trouble, Brooke knows that." Lucas, the people that he caused trouble between WERE WITH HER GETTING INTO THE CAR. YOU SAW THEM.
Tumblr media
I swear to god Lucas, I would hit you. SHUT UP.
24. Braley are such better friends than Breyton.
25. I REALLY wish we got more Nathan and Brooke scenes because they had a really fun chemistry together and I liked that they were both being courted by Haley and Lucas and they could both understand where the other was coming from
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
26. Haley's laugh at Chris saying "Maybe he's afraid of me" is hilarious because she stops and continues. But Chris shutting her up with "Maybe he doesn't care anymore" was mean but well-played.
27. It's funny how Chris Keller is a better Damon than Damon. Because he's not a good actor but he doesn't overplay it.
28. Aww, jealous Nathan
Tumblr media
29. James Lafferty's shoulders are quite broad this episode.
30. Nathan is vulnerable and you were practically giving the enemy a LAP DANCE. I mean she wasn't Brooke but the exaggeration is very Brooke and also very high school. I remember in high school we were at a school dance and this girl's boyfriend was getting jumped outside while she was dancing with another guy and all of us girls were like WHAT THE FUCK??? [INSERT NAME] IS GETTING JUMPED AND YOU WERE BASICALLY HAVING SEX ON THE DANCE FLOOR! What did we expect her to do? Get jumped with him?? Teenagers.
31. "I didn't do anything!" "Except for kiss Chris and run away with him?" I mean, she's got a point Haley. "What about you messing with Lucas and hiding all those letters you wrote to him under your bed?" I mean, she's got a point Brooke.
32. "I know this is where we made love in the rain." I mean, it wasn't ON the balcony though. It should've been.
33. "I still feel our past just like you do" well especially considering that you were the one who was left.
34. Rachel calling Lucas gay because he's CLEARLY into Brooke and is like please stop getting naked around me because I LOVE BROOKE is hilarious because what?
35. Chris also getting Brooke more and more drunk so they can have sex is incredibly gross.
36. "All of the celebrity..." she had ONE original song and was doing covers and opening for actual celebrities? WHAT ARE WE TALKING ABOUT HERE?
37. We could also talk about the fact that Nathan was the one who encouraged her to sing in front of people etc. etc. and she wouldn't have been a "star" without him in her life at all.
38. Mouth's reveal that Mel is his grandfather is ... OK? I know this is supposed to push Peyton to Ellie but meh.
39. "SHE NOTEBOOKED YOU?" "I totally Notebooked him" lmao these references.
40. Nathan keeping a flower from the beach is Lucas keeping a feather from Brooke's wings.
41. *SIGH* Brooke and Chris. What, it takes like two more episodes for them to be together?
42. I also absolutely do not believe that Brooke wouldn't have kicked Chris out of the house right after sleeping with him. She'd be disgusted.

If you ever need proof that something beautiful and magical can come from the darkest, cruelest places.
If you feel like there’s no hope for you because you were raised in a garbage dump.
If you feel like the world took your only chance at goodness before you even knew what good or bad meant.
Just remember that Mark Schwahn:
- told Craig Sheffer that he’d never kill him because he was based on his real brother
- screamed at 22y/o Sophia Bush for cutting her bangs because that’s how the cheerleaders at his high school wore their hair and they wouldn’t sleep with him
- he’s her lobster try he’s her Voldemort
- tormented Hilarie Burton until Moira Kelly told her “run” and saved her life
- that time when eighteen women who were cast and crew on OTH banded together and published a letter accusing him of sexual assault and harassment
- is responsible some of the strongest, longest-lasting friendships I’ve ever seen, because that’s what happens when one person tries to ruin everything and everyone: they banded together to survive, protect, and love each other, and to create something amazing despite, and maybe even to spite him
There is only one Tree Hill, and it does not belong to the monster whose name is splashed all over the title screens. It is our town, our school, our family, and we will always win over the Dan Scotts and Mark Schwahns of the world. They don’t get to spoil us. They don’t get to win.

a beautiful weekend view. just woke up from a long nap, still on my pjs with my messy hair but definitely not with a messy view.
clearing and releasing everything in my head today and letting the universe know that i’m beyond grateful for everything. three years ago, i didn’t know where to head or even be in life, and now i keep winning and winning.
like what Mark Schwahn said, “one day, you’re 17 and you’re planning for someday and then quietly, without you ever really noticing, someday is today and then someday is yesterday and this is your life.” 🤎

“The flight back from that is when he assaulted me. He assaulted me again in the car on the drive from Raleigh to Wilmington, He went straight to set and he told Danneel [Ackles] that he and I made out the whole time, and it was fun, and he was trying to make her jealous.“

Mark is a deplorable dark soul but you can’t fault him for telling the TRUTH about Elta in his OTH writing re: “In one scene, Mouth talks about Rachel leaving him for a more attractive man while everyone else comments on her plastic surgery.” Meaning her Leaving Riley Smith for Jackles and her being labeled the “plastic” Kween by SPN fandom. Elta sent on to OBJECTIFY HERSELF by accepting roles where she plays a bimbo without much intelligence living a SUPERFICIAL life putting her happiness in a MAN. Sound familiar? She said on the drama queens podcast she changed her last name as she was “Mrs Ackles all the way” as she prefers to ride the coattails of a partner to AVOID having to do any WORK herself [laziness] like vanity EP title on TW so she should be THE HW Queen of Nepotism

If I hear one more podcaster totally shaft Nathan and call Mouth the best boy on the show I will blow my top!!! The more I hear that the more I fucking hate Mouth. Mark Schwahn's fucking self insert/mouth piece is not the best boy on the show. The piece of shit that treats Millicent's virginity like he owns it is not the best boy!!!! Nathan is so underappreciated. Today I heard a podcaster who is on S4 say that Mouth and Chase are the best boys on the show. Again some people do not deserve the sweet angel that is Nathan Royal Scott!

Memorie Della Collina
Tumblr media

I love your takes on OTH and agree with nearly all of them! You and an anon had interesting thoughts on Julian and why he seems perfect on paper but was so meh in reality, and I laughed out loud when you pointed out that the writers radically changed his personality at least once or twice a season. I have a mutual who watched most of season six, skipped season seven, and was stunned when she tuned into season eight and was like ‘wait, since when is Julian the adorkable comic relief—-who is this?!’ I think for me I got a weird social climbing vibe from him, which would be annoying but understandable if we’d met him in high school but is a quality I find really off putting in adults. He’s obsessed with the so-called popular group of a high school he didn’t even attend and even says something gross (brulian fans fins it cute but no) after the first time he and Brooke have sex about now getting why she had been popular . He just seems to really care about popularity/social status and the fact that he himself was uncool in high school a decade ago and making a good impression in Hollywood and all that. I actually like that Lucas took an instant dislike to him because so did I!
Thank you! Yeah, Julian was an odd character. He's not a bad guy or even particularly irritating. It's just that the writers were unable to decide which personality to give him. So to begin with, Julian is this slick, underhanded guy who shows up in Tree Hill to make Lucas's movie while also fucking with Peyton. But once Lucas discovers Peyton's past with Julian, that goes away pretty quickly. They stuck with confident, almost worldly Julian when he first started hooking up with Brooke. Season 7 was kind of a mixture of season 6 Julian while also giving him more nerdy moments. Season 8 Julian wasn't even the same character. He couldn't do a simple high five. He did matching Halloween costumes with his mom. There were jokes sprinkled in about manly man Nathan who likes things like sports and beer vs Julian who is effeminate and knows how to pick out beautiful flower arrangements where it's clear who the butt of the joke is supposed to be. In season 9, they tried and failed to make Julian a darker, edgier character by having him go through a self destructive phase after leaving his son in the hot car. There's no actual coherency to his personality or character development. He's almost completely defined by being Brooke's love interest and to some degree, an awkward replacement for Lucas who doesn't quite fit in. It's to the point that Mark Schwahn apparently wanted to rip off the Dawson's Creek finale so badly that they once again decided to "go meta" by having Julian create a tv series about Lucas's book after they'd already done the same story line with the aborted movie back in season 6. Naturally, Julian writes himself into the series, stealing away Lucas's winning shot at the state championship and being the one to make the sex tape with Brooke.
That's an interesting take that I can't entirely disagree with. It's so fucking weird that the Julian we met in season 6 would ever care about this random group of high schoolers from a small town. We're invested because we've been watching their story lines since the first season, but you'd think Julian would have grown beyond trying to fit in with the popular kids and had met and bonded with his own "people" back in LA. I realize Julian being a regular required him to eventually mingle with Brooke's friend group, but it could have been done in a much more casual way. Oof, yeah. Brooke had tried so hard to define herself by things unrelated to sex and looks back on her sexual history during her teenage years as something.. not quite shameful, but also not something she's proud of. It wasn't the right thing to say at that moment, and if Julian read Lucas's book he would have known there was much more depth to Brooke than that. While I don't personally dislike Julian, I do think he was kind of desperate to fit in and receive validation from the popular kids. Again, I struggle to understand why he wanted validation specifically from the OTH characters considering he was already working in Hollywood when we met him. Julian Baker was basically two different characters awkwardly smashed together. I like him well enough, but in all honesty he's carried by the fact that he isn't Lucas. Lucas is so flawed and indecisive for most of the series that even though he's a far more dynamic and consistently written character, his massive lows make it easy to forget his highs.
