On Saturday, I got the novelization of The Nightmare Before Christmas, by Megan Shepherd. Today, I got the Barnes and Noble leather bound edition of The Adventures of Indiana Jones, by Campbell Black, James Kahn and Rob MacGregor.

Synopsis

I apologise in advance for the wonky scans. I was trying to figure out a good way of doing it without creasing the corners and some of them turned out kind of messy. I’ll include a transcription of everything below the cut.

At the annual Spring Festival in Ponyland, all the little ponies celebrate the end of winter with a happy pageant of song and dance. But, while they revel, the wicked witch Hydia (Cloris Leachman) and her equally nasty daughters Reeka (Rhea Perlman) and Draggle (Madeline Kahn), hatch a plot to turn peaceful Ponyland into a dark, dank and dreary wasteland.

During the festival, Lickety Split, a well-meaning but self-centered little pony, inadvertently ruins the show. Humiliated, she runs away, accompanied by her friend Spike, the baby dragon.

Meanwhile, back at the Volcano of Doom, Hydia, Reeka and Draggle busily conjure up evil spells. When an initial attempt to flood Ponyland fails, an enraged Hydia decides it’s time for the Smooze.

She sends her daughters out to collect the necessary ingredients: mold, mildew, muck, mire, fungus, slime, rust and phlume.

The evil witch sisters collect everything except the dreaded phlume, but they don’t tell their mother, who happily creates the Smooze, (Jon “Bowzer” Bauman). Soon the purple ooze bubbles over the lip of the volcano and heads towards Ponyland. “Nothing can stop the smooze now,” cackles Hydia.

Warned of impending disaster, the little ponies prepare for the oncoming Smooze. Wind Whistler and North Star fly over the clouds, bringing Megan, Molly and Danny, along with the Rainbow of Light.

As the Smooze rolls across Ponyland, it traps Lickety Split and Spike in a cave, where they encounter the Grundles, ugly but friendly little creatures who have lost their kingdom to the Smooze. With the aid of the Grundle King (Danny DeVito), they escape.

During a tremendous showdown, the Rainbow of Light manages to stop the Smooze, but in the process, the Dream Castle is covered over, the rainbow is trapped in gooey muck, and the little ponies are forced to evacuate their beloved home.

A shocked Hydia forces her daughters to admit that they omitted the phlume from the Smooze formula. Furious, she sends them out after the dreaded ingredient. Mission accomplished, the phlume is added to the dormant Smooze, and it springs back to life.

Desperate at this point, Megan, Wind Whistler and Fizzy visit the wise old Moochick (Tony Randall), who provides them with an ancient map leading to the Flutter Ponies, magical little winged ponies who might be able to stop the Smooze.

Lickety Split, Spike and the Grundles have a series of misadventures as they outrun the Smooze. During their travels, they rescue Morning Glory, a tiny gossamer-winged Flutter Pony, trapped in a well. A grateful Morning Glory offers to lead them to Flutter Valley.

Meanwhile, back at the new pony home, Paradise Estate, the little ponies, the Bushwoolies and other woodland creatures huddle together helplessly as the Smooze oozes towards them. The witches gloat triumphantly atop their Smooze boats!

Just when all seems lost, the sky fills with tiny Flutter Ponies who shift into Utter Flutter, creating a tremendous wind when they flutter their wings in unison. The sound is like a thousand tiny wind chimes and the force sweeps the Smooze all the way back

to the Volcano of Doom, uncovering the Dream Castle and freeing the Rainbow of Light. Hydia, Reeka and Draggle are dumped back into the volcano, along with the last of the Smooze.

With new understanding about the meaning of friendship, the heroic Flutter Ponies return home. As thanks for saving Lickety-Split and Spike, the Ponies give Dream Castle to the Grundles. Happiest of all is Baby Lickety-Split, glad to be back home with the Little Ponies where she belongs.

It's Cool I'm Good (2010)

I was all set to do a Monday TRUE RANDOM but then I realized that the film which the machine selected (1967's Countdown) was actually directed by Robert Altman and I definitely plan on doing a full Altman Director Focus at some point so I decided to pivot and watch a 35-minute experimental art movie instead.

I discovered this one just the other day via Megan Boyle's LIVEBLOG 2.0 and I loved it. The IMDB description is very funny but also accurate ("A bandaged woman with mysterious injuries wanders aimlessly around, telling jokes and other patter to the camera held by her volunteer nurses") and I also love that Mel Blanc is listed as one of the stars there because towards the end a Bugs Bunny cartoon is shown playing on a TV.

The editing is really good here, both video and sound. Almost unexpectedly so given the context/fidelity of the medium. I liked the mix of added and diegetic sound, a lovely blend of pop music and more abrasive stuff that collides together in bursts alongside the scattered, nonlinear 'narrative'. To that point: they clearly didn't have the rights to any of it, making it impossible to release in any commercial/official capacity (it strangely isn't even listed on Letterboxd, though a number of her other films are). It makes me wish more movies were made in this rogue style, where you can film yourself playing the flute alongside the album version of "Stairway to Heaven" without giving two shits.

The content of her mostly one-sided convos range from animal biology/habitats to civil engineering to this deranged bologna butt fable/joke...

It's an incredibly funny movie which is a rare treat in something that's also so firmly grounded in the world of experimental film.

The commentary also felt simple enough: existing in this fucked up world is hard, but we can (or should) always try to find levity in that struggle.

Each uncut DVD contained 3 episodes available both in an uncut, unedited English dub and the original Japanese format with English subtitles, and 3 DVDs were released, for a total of 9 uncut, uncensored and unedited episodes. The opening and ending themes were changed from songs by various popular recording artists to an instrumental song done with a synthesizer.Ī separate "uncut" DVD release was commissioned between 4Kids Entertainment and FUNimation Entertainment, featuring a new adaptation that is more consistent with the original. The Japanese sound effects were replaced with American sound effects, and the background music was changed to melodramatic synth music. These include different names for many characters and monsters, changes to the appearance of the cards to differentiate them from their real-life counterparts and various cuts and edits pertaining to violence, death and religious references to make the series suitable for children. The adaptation received many changes from the Japanese version to tailor it for international audiences. Synopsis:Rotten Tomatoes, home of the Tomatometer, is the most trusted measurement of quality for Movies & TV. In 2001, 4Kids Entertainment obtained the merchandising and television rights to the series from Konami, producing an English language version which aired in North America on Kids' WB! between Septemand June 10, 2006, also releasing in various countries outside of Japan. An interview with Brian Zimmerman mentions that they were only contracted to do three seasons of the series, meaning it was possibly 144 episodes. 25 Days of Actress, Part three!

Inspired by Be Kind Rewind’s video series for the month of December, here are the first movies I recommend you check out, if you haven’t already. These are all movies that are pre-2000, and feature a performance by an actress that I enjoy (and the actress did not win Best Actress or Best Supporting Actress for the role).

These are in no particular order!

17. Allison Janney in Drop Dead Gorgeous

I love this movie so much. It is an incredibly underrated cult comedy from the late 90′s, and I may even consider it to be my favorite comedy (made after 1960, at least). This movie is a mockumentary about a beauty pageant in small town MN, and they follow around contestants and discover the “ugly side of beauty”. It’s just...so great. And Allison Janney plays the friend of Kirsten Dunst’s mom....she’s basically the cool aunt. Loretta is caring, protective, flirtatious, and absolutely hilarious. Janney absolutely nails the comedy in this film, and Loretta gets some of the best lines.

18. Hayley Mills in The Trouble with Angels

So, the reason why I didn’t talk about Hayley Mills in The Parent Trap in part two was because I wanted to talk about her performance in this movie! Mills plays Mary, a young girl sent to live in a all-girls Catholic boarding school (run by Rosalind Russell!), and the film follows the hijinks of Mary’s “scathingly brilliant ideas” along with her best friend, Rachel. Mary is the rebel of the two friends. She comes from an unhappy home, and really has no one who cares about her, outside of the school. She’s quick-witted and sharp, but also vulnerable and lonely...she knows how to have fun, but seems to understand when to back off. The movie follows the characters over three years of school, and it’s interesting to see how Mary changes...you almost don’t notice until you watch it again, and you see the layers in Mills’ performance.

19. Madeline Kahn in Clue

What can I say about this performance that hasn’t already been said?! Madeline Kahn as Mrs. White gives one of the most hilarious comedic performances I have ever seen. Mrs. White is cunning and ruthless, but she barely lets any of that show underneath her cold and aloof exterior. But as the night goes on, she starts to “let loose” a bit. There have been plenty of times when I’ve gone back to re-watch scenes, just so I can watch her in the background. She has some of the most interesting bits of physical comedy...sometimes only shown in a tiny gesture or a double-take. But it is genuinely brilliant.

20. Susanna Foster in Phantom of the Opera

My favorite Phantom adaptation and my favorite Christine! As a kid, I just watched the movie and enjoyed it...but now, as an adult, I am in awe at how good her performance is. Foster’s Christine is kind, sweet and caring, with a wonderful vulnerability....you just want to take care of her! I was amazed at the fact that in the final lair, she is legit trembling! That is not easy to do and make it look real...but I also love her Christine’s intelligence (like when she tries to convince Claudin to take her to the foyer so she can sing for him), and her ambition. She may be in a love triangle, but her career is important to her and she makes that known. She’s just great.

21. June Allyson in Little Women

And now we’re into my favorite Little Women adaptation and my favorite Jo March! I just watched this movie again the other day, and it just gives me a warm, safe feeling. June Allyson inhabits the character of Jo March so well, that in this particular film, I could not imagine another actress playing the role. She really shows the fiery side of Jo...you can tell that she is someone who just says whatever pops into her head, and there are some nice comedic moments as a result. And it’s nice to see how she matures by the end of the film. You can feel Jo’s passion for her writing, whether it’s by instructing Amy on how to act a scene or making herself cry at how wonderful her latest story is. And she has wonderful chemistry with everyone onscreen, especially Margaret O’Brien, who plays Beth. During that final scene between the two, you really feel how difficult this is for Jo, and you want to cry right along with her.

22. Margaret O’Brien in Meet Me in St. Louis

Speaking of Margaret O’Brien, let’s talk about one of the best child performances ever given. I’m kind of cheating a bit, as O’Brien was actually awarded an Oscar for her work in this film, but this was back when the academy gave out Juvenile awards...little mini Oscars for actors under 18. But Tootie is a precocious child living with her large family in St. Louis...she is definitely an interesting kid. The kind who decides that her dolls occasionally succumb to illness and need to be buried in the yard. But she’s not creepy, I promise! One thing Margaret O’Brien was known for was being a great crier (along with June Allyson), and there is a scene in this movie that absolutely rips my heart out. She doesn’t do the cute “child actor” cry, with it’s just a few fat tears falling down while they stick out their lip. No. She cries like a real kid. So much so, that I can’t help but weep when she does. I saw this in the theater last year (remember theaters?!) and had to be very careful not to make too much noise!

23. Megan Cavanagh in A League of Their Own

Another move with a great acting ensemble...particularly for actresses! And I started thinking, which performance and character do I like the best? It was no question: Marla. Marla is a wonderful character played beautifully by Megan Cavanagh. She’s one of the best players on the baseball team, but she’s shy and awkward...someone who probably hasn’t been in a lot of social situations...and it’s so heartwarming to see her blossom. I just wish we had more of her in the movie!!

24. Bette Davis in Now, Voyager

I think this may be my favorite Bette Davis performance. Charlotte Vale is a shy, put upon young woman, living under the thumb of a domineering mother. It’s clear she suffers from severe anxiety and she ends up spending some time in an institution. But her life changes for the better when she begins therapy and goes off on a trip where she finds love, unexpectedly. As always, Davis gives such a wonderful and nuanced performance, saying so much while doing very little.

25. Marilyn Monroe in How to Marry a Millionaire

Another movie that I saw for the first time very recently! Before watching this movie, I had only seen Monroe in The Misfits and All About Eve...I hadn’t watched any of her light comedies that she was so well known for. And when I discovered this at the library, I decided to give it a shot! After watching it, I want to watch more of her movies! Monroe plays Pola, a half-blind model who is trying to find a rich husband. She is absolutely charming in this role! I loved watching the scenes where she tries to get along without her glasses; as she thinks she won’t get a husband if she wears them. The scenes really showed her flair for comedy and I still believe that she’s a better actress then most people ever gave her credit for.
