Time for a Night Vale Tournament!
A lot of tournaments are going on here on this Hellsite, and now that I've had polls for a while with no good ideas, I want to go ahead and make a tournament of my own.
So it's now going to be time for the Obscure Night Vale Ships tournament! If you have an obscure Night Vale ship, whether that's a rarepair or a less popular pairing from the books or liveshows, please send it in and I'll try to get the brackets up later this weekend.
Ships that are NOT eligible are the pairings that have been mentioned with relative significance for at least five years in the main podcast feed. This means that ships like Cecil x Carlos, Abby x Steve, and Maureen x Michelle would not be eligible. However, Jackie Fierro x Sheriff Sam would be eligible, because even though both characters have been around for more than five years, their relationship was only ever alluded to in It Devours.
Characters without canon sexualities can be submitted, and friendships or enemy ships will also be considered. Please specify if you're submitting something as a friend or enemy ship. Everything is at my own discretion but ideally we'll have between 16-24 rarepairs.
One last thing: I haven't decided if Charlevin should be considered, but if you can present a good enough argument one way or the other I'm open to being swayed.
Looking forward to deciding once and for all what the best obscure Night Vale ship is!

Movies I watched this Week #139 (Year 3/Week 35):
2 more back-to-back re-watches of Ron Fricke’s sublime non-narrative Head trip Samsara (“Impermanence”). Spiritual poetry, gorgeous visuals, breathtaking scope. A perfect film to watch while mushrooming. 10/10. (Photo Above).
🍿
First watch (no idea why I waited all these years) of William Friedkin’s Sorcerer, his ill-fated adaptation of Clouzot's 'The wages of fear'. Roy Scheider is a desperado transporting nitroglycerin in the Dominican jungle, together with 3 other unfortunate misfits.
🍿
A enchanting, classic 1974 French drama, Vincent, François, Paul and the Others, my second by Claude Sautet (after ‘The heart at winter’). A group of middle class 40-something friends, lovers, husbands and wives face a series of midlife crises. Among them Yves Montand, Michel Piccoli, Gérard Depardieu and Stéphane Audran. The camaraderie reminded me of the friendship in ‘Goodfellas’ (without the crimes, violence, and immorality). 7/10.
🍿
The big clock, my first Corporate Noir by John Farrow (father to Mia, husband to Maureen O'Sullivan). Ray Millard acts and sounds exactly like Cary Grant-Lite in this less-known thriller.
A curious visual: There's a very stylish shot at an empty executive boardroom with a giant conference table, and the only items on it are oversized personal ashtrays next to each chair.
🍿
Val Lawton X 2:
🍿 The best movie of the week, the documentary Val Lewton: The Man in the Shadows. Produced and narrated by Martin Scorsese. A terrific biography and assessment of this melancholic producer who had the potential to become one of the biggest auteurs, but who is now barely-remembered for a series of 1940's low-budget, B-movies from RKO studio. I previously only saw his 'I walked with a Zombie', but I'm going to watch as many of the others as I can.
🍿 "...My Goodness, ain't nobody likes chicken Gumbo?..."
Lewton's first project, after he was installed as head of RKO low-budget horror department, was Cat People. "A disturbed woman", a Serbian fashion illustrator [Not too many of those] turns into a ferocious panther, after she's shown at her very first scene, littering repeatedly by throwing her discarded drawings in the streets.
🍿
Our friend, my second film by Gabriela Cowperthwaite (After ‘Blackfish’). A sad, non-linear tearjerker, based on a real story. Dakota Johnson is dying of cancer, with her husband, two daughters, and their best friend, who selflessly stays by their side. The first film when I liked the role Casey Affleck plays. 7/10.
/ female /
🍿
The new gonzo documentary Telemarketers reminded me of a chapter from my own life that I'm not proud of. For about 3 years in the mid-90's I sold bogus investments, gold futures, and fake ostrich options (!) over the phones in exactly the same way as the conmen in this sleazy, seedy, funny, cynical story. Except that over in Jersey they sold $35 donations and got paid $10 an hour, while we in Costa Mesa, CA got a $3,500 commission for every time we fleeced $40,000 from someone, which happened very often. So much money, and so many regrets later!
🍿
4 more I can watch over and over again:
🍿 My 10th-15th rewatch of Edgar Wright’s brilliant Hot Fuzz.
1. If you know nothing about it beforehand, and watch it for the first time while stoned, it’s impossible to know what it’s really about until the end; the story changes style, intention, musical cue and genre from scene to scene.
2. Is the violent shoot-them-up climax, cartoonishly exaggerated, (where still, nobody dies) the most cliché-filled action scene ever?
3. The subtle musical score underlining every scene is sublime; I am going to listen/watch it again - without the pictures, just the sound!
4. Actually, the whole editing, visuals, sound editing, borrowing from dozens of prior movies, is extraordinary.
5. Every part of the dialogue - every single line - is highly quotable!
10/10.
And as always, How to do visual comedy, from ‘Every frame a picture’.
🍿 I just saw the trailer for The big Lebowski for the first time; It really ties the movie together pretty well. So I "had to" watch the movie itself again. A masterpiece on every level. Even the IMDb synopsis encapsulates it correctly: "Jeff 'The Dude' Lebowski, mistaken for a millionaire of the same name, seeks restitution for his ruined rug and enlists his bowling buddies to help get it."
I also like Wikipedia's chapter on its 'Use as social and political analysis'. With a magnificent score (which includes Dylan's 'The man in me', Gypsy Kings cover of 'Hotel California', Yma Sumac's Ataypura) and with Asia Carrera as Sherry, the porn actress.
The last sentence in it is 'Say, friend, you got any more of that good sarsaparilla?' Always 10/10.
🍿 Once again, Ali Wong’s first stand-up Baby Cobra. Funny, filthy, hardcore vulgar, very sexy; "Best pregnant comic".
🍿 Top banana, S1E2 episode from ‘Arrested Development’. From Vanity Fair’s ‘List of 25 perfect TV episodes’.
🍿
The source, another banal documentary about a spectacular human being, ultramarathoner Courtney Dauwalter, who just cemented her status as the greatest ultrarunner of all time by the unprecedented triple crown wins of the ‘Western States 100’, the ‘Hardrock 100’, and UTMB in the same summer. Emotionally inspirational.
🍿
The midnight gospel, an adult animated series, my first by Pendleton Ward. I saw the first episode yesterday, and I already can’t remember a single goddam thing from it.
🍿
From Dane Sitagi’s The ballerina project: Basia Rhoden dances in the city of Chicago.
🍿
Throw-back to the "Art project”:
Ballerina Adora.
🍿

A Magic Afternoon
Summary: Michelle shows Maureen a card trick one rainy day.
Words: 947
Warnings: none!
Read on ao3
Notes:
-I love stage magic! It’s fascinating and I’ve never understood people who say knowing how the trick is done ruins it.
-The card suites in Night Vale, rather than being hearts, clubs, spades, and diamonds, are eyes, teeth, wings, and hands. This is pure headcanon btw, we actually don’t know anything about playing cards in canon.
Enjoy!
It was raining, that gray, all-day kind of rain that filled streets and left puddles in backyards. It was a rare occurrence in a desert area like Night Vale, and as such, the City Council had panicked and shut down the town. Dark Owl Records, like all other businesses that day, was closed, so Michelle and Maureen sat on top of the front desk together that afternoon, holding hands and complaining about customers.
“Ugh, there was this one guy in here last week,” Michelle grumbled, “who asked me for any “magic music”. When I asked him why, he said he needed it for his magic show. Apparently he was some sort of stage magician. I told him to get lost and I think he stole a record on the way out.”
“He sounds like a jerk, but I actually don’t mind stage magicians,” Maureen said. “I don’t think they’re, like, cool or anything, but they’re nice to watch sometimes.”
Michelle shrugged. “Yeah, but they have awful music taste.”
“Do you know many stage magicians besides that one guy?”
“I’ve met a few. My mom had some friends that learned magic, and they all loved Woody Guthrie.” She rolled her eyes. “Do you have any gum left?”
Maureen took a package of bright teal gum from her pocket, handed a piece to Michelle, and took one for herself. “You know what I really like?” she said, unwrapping it. “Those magic tricks that are just sleight-of-hand. Dark magic just seems like cheating, you know?”
Michelle popped the gum into her mouth. “I guess. But isn’t the point that you aren’t supposed to be able to tell the difference? A magician never reveals their secrets and all that crap?”
“I’ve never understood that,” Maureen remarked. “It’s better when you understand what’s going on. It almost makes me appreciate the capabilities of our own human hands or whatever.”
“Or whatever,” Michelle agreed. “Hey… if you like magic, I know a card trick, if you want to see.”
“Sure. Do you even have any cards?”
“Yeah, in here.” Michelle hopped down and rifled through the drawers of the desk for a few minutes until she triumphantly pulled out a box of cards. She opened it and began shuffling with the traditional method of tossing the cards in the air and gathering them back up in a random order. This done, she turned back to Maureen and fanned the cards out facedown across the top of the desk.
“Are you going to say it?” Maureen asked, grinning.
“Say what?”
“‘Pick a card, any card”.”
“Please, that’s so cliche.” Michelle considered for a moment, then sighed. “Only for you, Maureen.”
“I won’t tell anyone.”
“Pick a card, any card,” Michelle said in her best stage magician voice.
Maureen chose the one on the outermost edge. It was the five of eyes.
Michelle pushed the cards back together and separated them into two piles, one face up, one facedown. “Memorize your card, but don’t tell me what it is. The put it facedown on this pile.”
Maureen did as she was told, and Michelle put the two piles back on top of each other. She took cards off the pile one by one, until she reached the five of eyes. “Is this your card?”
“Yes.” Maureen took it back and examined it as though it held answers. “How did you do that?”
“A magician never reveals her secrets,” Michelle said slyly.
“Not even to her girlfriend?”
“It’s a pretty basic card trick, actually,” Michelle told her, taking the card back and shuffling the deck again. “I’ll show you.” When she had gathered up all the cards, she had Maureen pick another one (the two of teeth this time), and again split the deck. “The trick is this pile,” she told Maureen, tapping the deck of face up cards. “You memorize the one on top- the nine of wings- so that when you stack them both together-“ she held out the second deck, Maureen laid her card on top, and Michelle set the other deck on top of it, facedown- “you know what comes before the card the other person picked.” She again went through the pile until she picked up the nine of wings. “Your card will be next,” she said, and held up the two of teeth. “You try.”
Maureen shuffled, laid out the cards, and separated them into two piles after Michelle had chosen one. She glanced at the face up card. It was the queen of hands. Michelle put her card on the facedown pile, Maureen stacked the two together, and when she reached the queen of hands, the thought of What if I did it wrong? briefly crossed her mind, but she shrugged it off and held up the ten of eyes. “Is this your card?”
Michelle actually smiled. “Yes.”
Something almost like happiness flooded through Maureen. “Do you know any other card tricks?” she asked, offering Michelle a hand as she climbed back up onto the desk.
“No,” Michelle replied, resting her head against Maureen’s shoulder. “My mom taught me that one when I was eight, and I showed it to everyone I could. I wanted to learn more, but then everyone at my school got really into card tricks and all those kind of things, so-“ she made a face- “I figured I’d better not.”
“I do think sleight-of-hand magic is getting less popular,” Maureen mused. “Everyone’s trying conjurings and stuff now.”
“Maybe I will learn some more, then.” Michelle grinned up at her. “And I’ll show them to you, if you want.”
“Yeah,” Maureen said, and pressed a kiss to Michelle’s hair. “Yeah, I think I’d like that.”
A Magic Afternoon is a production of my love of magic tricks. This fanfic was written by me, and produced by the fact that I know exactly one card trick. This fanfic’s weather was brief, heavy rain outside the author’s window. Comments? Questions? Leave them in the notes, come find me @moon-lite-all-nite, or shout facts about neutron stars into your empty mailbox. Check out @moon-lite-all-nite for rambles, incorrect quotes, occasional fanart, and more writing. Today’s proverb: You only live once, and that life is short. Put tomatoes in your scrambled eggs.

michelle x maureen headcanons for the soul:
adopting a dog as an excuse to move in together
naming said dog athena like a couple of nerds
for their 1 year anniversary michelle brings in cans of paints and they spend the day redecorating the apartment in pastel colours
for their 2 year anniversary maureen does the same except this time its Goth Season Babey
one time, when they had just begun hanging out, they accidentally wore identical outfits and thats when they knew they were meant to be
they share wardrobes because i dare you to suggest otherwise
michelle is great at baking and maureen is great at staring at michelle work, awestruck, while she pretends to help
michelle teaching maureen to bake and then suddenly they're having bakery fundraisers to keep dark owl records running every once in a while
sunday night is binge night and they take turns deciding what to watch and always fall asleep, legs entangled, on the couch in front of the tv as it faded into static
they absolutely went on a double date with cecil and carlos (on the latters request) and were absolutely rolling their eyes the entire time while simultaneously feeding each other desert
they don't actually know for sure who asked the other out or when "hanging out" turned into "dates" so their "anniversary" is just the new moon night of the month they met
the whole beagle thing really got michelle into witchcraft and maureen into history and they spent many a days in the library running from the occasional loose librarian and smuggling in banned titles with some help from tamika
their secret town ship name is "m & m's" and they secretly love it
jus michelle & maureen being soft thank you

Podcast WLW Week?
Last year I hosted a collection on AO3 dedicated to posting fanfic about queer wxmen* in audio drama. As we all know here on Tumblr dot com, there’s a lot of really great queer representation in podcasts, and that’s great. But a lot of the times, people only focus on the male-presenting gay ships while ignoring all the amazing gay girls we have in the media - something that is especially important considering that a lot of popular podcasts are created by queer wxmen.
This collection was open from April 7th to April 15th. Now, I’m considering making a collection like this again, but actually trying to get people signed up for it and maybe turn it into a gift exchange? This post is really just to feel out interest for the project. You don’t have to identify as WLW to post!
As an example, here are some of the characters and pairings that you could write about.
Maureen/Michelle (Ace lesbian/unspecified wlw, Welcome to Night Vale)
Pamela Winchell (Unspecified wlw, Welcome to Night Vale)
Rita Penumbrapodcast (Pan/bi, The Penumbra Podcast)
Sir Caroline/Quanyii (Lesbian/unspecified wlw, The Penumbra Podcast)
X (Asexual, Girl in Space)
Alice/Keisha (Lesbian/lesbian, Alice Isn’t Dead)
Violet Liu (Bisexual, The Strange Case of Starship Iris)
And of course, many others as well!
Anyway, let me know what you think about making a WLW Week for audio drama fanfiction.
*I use wxmen instead of women to be more inclusive towards genderqueer and nonbinary people that may identify with femininity or womanhood to some extent - for example, Chance Sequoya from TPP

I know it was practically canon in every other way, but I felt so fullfiled hearing Cecil refer to Maureen and Michelle as girlfriends.

heyy i've literally been on your blog for like 4 seconds BUT i saw some ships that i love, so - do you want to do a list of your OTPs from every fandom? partly because it could be fun for you, partly because i need more serotonin which i only get from finding new ships haha
omg absolutely! First of all, thank you for asking 💕
I just started writing and this ended up being super long *hides in shame* I hope you enjoy it ✨
I love so many shows and ships, so I'll list them all below but if you ask what my absolute favorites are, I'll just add "!!!" to the fronts of the specific ships that make my brain melt, bc of how fucking much I love them.
The number of ! indicates the amount of brain damage that ship has given me, which is directly proportional to how many hours I could go on and on about them as characters and them as a couple and how perfect they are for each other.
Alright let's do this.
I'll start with the classics, and then move on to lesser known ones:
!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Queer as Folk US - Britin (Brian x Justin)
!!!!!!! Harry Potter - Wolfstar (Sirius x Remus)
! Harry Potter (ot3) - Wolfstarbucks (Sirius x Remus x James)
Harry Potter - Jily (James x Lily)
Harry Potter - Drarry (Draco x Harry)
Harry Potter - Scorbus (Scorpius x Albus Severus)
look- I know jkr is problematic, which is why I don't give her money anymore. But fanfic is free and I grew up with these characters, I will not let go of them. I have SO MANY thoughts about wolfstar and the Marauders jfc I could go on for hours.
!!! BBC Sherlock - Johnlock (John x Sherlock)
And any adaptation of Sherlock Holmes tbh, the Guy Ritchie movies are also *chef's kiss*
!!!!!!!! Supernatural - Destiel (Dean x Castiel)
fair warning here: Destiel is my otp and I believe in endgame Destiel but as I've said before, Dean is my emotional support character, which means I ship him with basically anyone who is strong enough to lift him up against a wall 🤗 which includes but not limited to:
Supernatural - Denny (Dean x Benny)
Supernatural - Drowley (Dean x Crowley)
Supernatural - Dean x Lee
Supernatural - Dean x Lissa
Also, if you've never watched spn... Idk what to tell you, you're in for a wild ride. Because that show is BRILLIANT but ALSO and (I cannot express this enough) at the same time it is a trashcan on fire. If you've watched it, you know exactly what I mean.
Alright, let's move on:
!!!!! Shameless US - Gallavich (Ian x Mickey)
!!! Teen Wolf - Sterek (Stiles x Derek)
Teen Wolf - Scallison (Scott x Allison)
Teen Wolf - Allydia (Allison x Lydia)
Brooklyn 99 - Peraltiago (Amy x Jake)
Brooklyn 99 - Holt x Kevin
Brooklyn 99 - Rosa x Pimento
Welcome to Night Vale - Cecilos (Cecil x Carlos
Welcome to Night Vale - Michelle x Maureen
WTNV is a podcast, not visual media but if you haven't listened to it, do yourself a favor and do it now!!
Sense8 (ot3) - Hernando x Lito x Danny
Sense8 - Raj x Kala
Sense8 - Amanita x Nomi
Sense8 (ot3) - Raj x Kala x Wolfgang
Glee - Seblaine (Blaine x Sebastian)
Glee - Huntbastian (Hunter x Sebastian)
Glee - Brittana (Brittany x Santana)
Supergirl - Supercorp (Lena x Kara)
Supergirl - Karolsen (Kara x Jimmy)
The Flash - Thallen (Barry x Eddie)
The Flash - Westallen (Barry x Iris)
The Flash (ot3) - Westhallen (Eddie x Barry x Iris)
The Flash - Harmon (Cisco x Hartley)
Davinci's Demons - Leonardo x Lorenzo
... Aaaand, I think that's all I can remember for the fictional ones 🤔 some of these shows I haven't watched in yeeeears, but I thought I'd add them bc why not.
Now. That being said...
These next ones might be problematic. But I *do* actually ship some rpf... I KNOW SHAME ON ME.
Now, I want to make it very clear that I only engage in fan discussions, I read fanfic, and then I move on with my life. I DO NOT bring this up to the people involved, nor their families nor their friends nor their partners. And I hate when people do that. I know these are real people and not fictional characters so I don't harass them about this, nor do it bring it up to them in social media or their concerts or in any possible way.
I just enjoy my anonymous tinhatting with strangers online, and then I get off the internet, and go to work, and see my friends, and I move on with my life. I simply like the idea of these ships. I like to imagine, from whatever little information I have received about these people (based on what THEY themselves have made available for me and others to look at and overanalyize) I like to imagine that this people had been at one point or another romantically involved. But I honestly couldn't care less if they weren't. I'm just having fun reading fics online.
My rpf ships are:
Larry (Harry Styles x Louis Tomlinson)
Kaylor (Taylor Swift x Karlie Kloss)
Swiftgron (Taylor Swift x Dianna Agron)
and I guess for the sake of fairness I'll add:
Taylor Swift x Joe Alwyn (bc unlike some gaylors and bi-lors I DO believe they're together for real, and they make me believe in love 🥺)
... Aaaand that's it. That's all the people and characters I ship. 😬
