More Rime doodles! Nina was thrilled to bits at getting to hang out in an actual bar that wasnt just the ships galley lmao
Tannis (the very cute sweater man in the top left corner) belongs to the super cool dm @coffeecakecafe, and the lyrics that Nina is very enthusiastically singing were written up ON THE FLY by the incredibly talented @bacoj8 who plays the beautiful bard Jasper who is going to single handedly bring sunshine back to the Dales

I was surprised to see you put george in absolute best - did you like him the whole time??? I had moments where I loved him but he ended up being too irredeemable for me so im curious to hear your thoughts
he's always been one of my favorites, if not my absolute favorite character! a character being entertaining is way more important to me than their likability and I am almost always entertained by george. take owen for example: i absolutely hate him and don't find him likable because he is a smug murderous abuser but i find him very entertaining. the show has lots of great villains who are awful people but we all love them because they are charismatic and fun to watch. I feel the same way about george.
he brings a lot of the show's humor and i like his awkwardness. his nerdyness and intelligence contrasts well with his monstrous side and i like seeing his progression in season 1 towards becoming more accepting of himself. i will also admit that out of the 3 supernaturals in the show, i find werewolves more interesting than vampires and ghosts. i know a lot of fans of the show are more into the vampire stuff and i like it too but i just like werewolf storylines more anyway so that's definitely part of why i like george.
in season 2 we see how much george was affected both by killing herrick and by his relationship with nina falling apart in addition to his guilt about infecting her. even if he's not always at his most likable throughout that season we see character progression. a boring character is stagnant and doesn't change. seeing a character change and grow (for better or worse) makes them more dynamic. a character with flaws is more interesting than a character who is perfect and never does anything wrong. there are characters on the show who i find likable but mostly boring (like hugh or sykes).
i didn't put season 2 george on a lower tier like i did with mitchell because i was still entertained by george in that season, whereas i find mitchell's s2 vampire king storyline one of the least interesting storylines in the whole show (sorry anyone who loves it, just not for me).
HOWEVER i do wish the show had addressed him cheating on nina with daisy a bit more since nina never actually finds out about it (although he heavily implies it in that scene in episode 3x05(?) and i always thought it was weird that nina never confronted him because she is very smart and i would think she'd be able to figure it out). that felt like a totally unresolved aspect of their relationship and seems like a common complaint about george's character. i do find it kind of funny that most fandoms view adultery as worse than murder since i see people criticize george for cheating but never see people criticize mitchell for the box tunnel 20. im guessing it's because mitchell is seen as unable to control himself and will inevitably fall back into his dark side whereas george knew what he was doing (but i do wonder if it being post-full-moon when george cheated on nina was a factor in that decision with the wolf and its more primal tendencies influencing him more than other times of the month. im not justifying george's actions here but it's just interesting that i never see that possibility discussed while mitchell is granted more leeway for what is a much worse crime).
my least favorite version of george is in 4x01 and i agree with what other people have said about it feeling like a weird one-off episode that doesn't feel like the show we know. the whole episode feels like it only exists to kill off george but not before butchering his likability. he's just a husk of himself and his complete detachment from his daughter to the point of not even naming her is really upsetting. i get that grief can do that but i wish the writers would've went a different direction. i would've much preferred them killing off both nina and george in this episode so that we could've seen them parenting together while also dealing with losing mitchell. george comes off as sort of selfish to me in the way that his grief for nina completely overshadow annie's grief for both nina AND mitchell. the episode doesn't leave enough room for annie's feelings. I wanted to see him and annie coming together, not them being driven apart because he barely lets anyone else into the nursery. so he definitely loses likability for me here but i think a lot of that is that it's just an awkward episode that's really more of a stepping stone between 3x08 and 4x02.
i do find it really interesting how the fandom seems to criticize george more than mitchell. i think mitchell sacrificing himself because he knows he will never be able to control himself forever allows him to be redeemed in the end and he is given a heroic send off. george ALSO gets a heroic send off by saving his daughter and killing griffin but for whatever reason people don't seem to view him as redeeming himself as much as mitchell did.
so i guess my answer to your question is that george is still one of my favorites despite where his character ended up because:
he's very funny
i like werewolves and the contrast of his personality to what he is
russell tovey is a great actor who is good at both comedic and dramatic moments
i like his relationships with nina, annie, and mitchell
his character evolves and has ups and downs throughout the seasons
most of all, i am consistently entertained by him

Robin Sloane, my mentor.
Robin Sloane is a badass.
First thing, full disclosure. as they say. I’m not one of those folks who posts about family though sometimes you just gotta call it like it is. To be completely upfront, Robin Sloane Seibert is my wife and the mother of our sons. But, this post is about about work and how this amazing woman has been one of my most important guides and advisors. Right from the start, without intending to be at all advisory, she upended –all in a good way!– exactly how I’ve thought about my work. That doesn’t happen often in life and more than worth this shout out.
Robin Sloane has been a major innovator in the world of music video, always ready to work with emerging talent, encouraging them to dream. She started in the record business at a fantastic indie label outside of Burlington, Vermont, Philo Records. Founded by the charismatic entrepreneur Bill Schubart and his brother Michael Couture, Philo specialized in the contemporary folk scene that Robin followed, and, added to her college radio experiences and love of rock, she thrived at the label. After college she did a quick stint at Rolling Stone before landing in the publicity department of Epic Records, now part of Sony Music.
Getting a whiff of what was going on in music video in the early 80s, Robin jumped in, promoting Epic’s artists to any television outlet that would play her clips. When MTV went on the air she was more than ready. She started out strong, and promoted Adam & The Ants –among many others– to the channel, earning MTV its very first gold record. And after that things only got better.
Tumblr media
Adam and The Ants Gold Record Party, Epic Records & MTV, Windows on the World NYC (Top, L-R) Buzz Brindle, Roberta Cruger, Alan Hunter, Julian Goldberg, Chip Rachlin, Bill Bennett, Walter Winnick, Robert Smith (Bottom, L-R) Robin Sloane, Harvey Leeds, Gail Sparrow, John Sykes, Nina Blackwood, JJ Jackson, Martha Quinn, Liz Nealon
By the time that Robin and I met on a blind date in October 1992 I was more than a bit intimidated. She had special talent and had a winning way with arts so she’d become a major player in the industry. She’d run video in the 80s era of the storied Elektra Records, winning the very first MTV Video Music Award for The Cars’ “You Might Think.”
youtube
Moving on to the powerhouse Geffen Records she was running the entire creative department, charged with imaging the company’s artists in video, album covers and whatever ephemera went along with it all. Among the highlights she was responsible for the famous album cover of Nirvana’s “Nevermind” and it’s breakout video, “Smells Like Teen Spirit.”
Tumblr media
youtube
As we got to know each other, bonded by a shared passion for music of all kinds, Robin filled me in on what makes great artists tick, how to identify a true “star” and, possibly most important of all, the critical role of ambition in success. Honestly, these were things that had never occurred to my somewhat academic and intellectual approach to the work I loved. I had been under the mistaken impression that “talent” was the driver, that the most talented person would “win.” Robin had a much more intuitive approach, one that had been honed by her personal experiences as much as her professional ones. She might have had the intuition, sure, but she’d mastered it into approaches that completely bowled me over.
Talent was great, of course, now I found out it was only one of the things that made the world go ‘round. Ambition and competitiveness were key too. And maybe most of all, the one that had completely eluded me for my entire life, was the artist’s blinding self regard, the fuel for the whole package. So, while I thought there was one driving factor, Robin let me know that it was more like a table that had to be held up by three equal pillars.
Who knew?! Robin did. Now, I had a clue too, and I’ve worked with it for the past 30 years.
Over time, I also realized that Robin’s view of corporate politics made me look like the truly naive rube I was. She had a street understanding that I lacked, and set the stage for my ignoring how to “get ahead” and focus instead on the independent life that was better suited for me.
Robin went on to rack up more platinum records and VMAs as the 90s wore on, but soon she was able to move from her role as a creative enabler to being a creative person herself. Over the years, she’s morphed into a classical musician and perceptive writer.
For me, my failures are my own. But, the successes over the years are a true partnership with this woman.
Endlessly curious, deliciously smart and totally fucking badass, Robin Sloane is a real force of nature.

A vida vale realmente a pena?
Sim!
A música.
Crazy
Canção de Gnarls Barkley
Eu lembro quando
I remember when
Eu lembro, lembro quando perdi a cabeça
I remember, I remember when I lost my mind
Havia algo tão agradável naquele lugar
There was something so pleasant about that place
Even your emotions have an echo in so much space
And when you're out there without care
Sim, eu estava fora de contato
Yeah, I was out of touch
But it wasn't because I didn't know enough
Eu simplesmente sabia demais
I just knew too much
Isso me faz louco?
Does that make me crazy?
Isso me faz louco?
Does that make me crazy?
Isso me faz louco?
Does that make me crazy?
Possivelmente
Possibly
And I hope that you are having the time of your life
But think twice, that's my only advice
Vamos agora, quem é você, quem é você, quem é você
Come on now, who do you, who do you, who do you
Quem você pensa que é
Who do you think you are
Ha ha ha, abençoe sua alma
Ha ha ha, bless your soul
Você realmente acha que está no controle
You really think you're in control
Eu acho que você está louco
I think you're crazy
Eu acho que você está louco
I think you're crazy
Eu acho que você está louco
I think you're crazy
Apenas como eu
Just like me
My heroes had the heart to lose their lives out on the limb
And all I remember is thinking I want to be like them
Desde que eu era pequeno
Ever since I was little
Desde pequeno parecia divertido
Ever since I was little it looked like fun
E não é por acaso que eu vim
And it's no coincidence I've come
E eu posso morrer quando terminar
And I can die when I'm done
Mas talvez eu esteja louco
But maybe I'm crazy
Talvez você esteja louco
Maybe you're crazy
Talvez estejamos loucos
Maybe we're crazy
Provavelmente
Probably

RICKY
(preocupado)
Não, você está com medo de mim.
JANELA
Não, eu não sou.
Mas ela é. Ricky a estuda.
RICKY
Você quer ver a coisa mais linda
Eu já filmei?
INT.
quase ouvir, certo? E esta bolsa foi
apenas... dançando comigo. Como um pouco
garoto me implorando para brincar com ele. Para
quinze minutos. Esse é o dia em que eu
percebi que havia toda essa vida
por trás das coisas, e isso incrivelmente
força benevolente que queria que eu soubesse
não havia razão para ter medo. Sempre.
Uma batida.
RICKY (CONTINUAÇÃO)
O vídeo é uma desculpa esfarrapada, eu sei. Mas isso
me ajuda a lembrar... eu preciso
lembrar...
Agora Jane está observando ele.
RICKY (CONTINUAÇÃO)
(distante)
A vida é Lindo, Crazy, Plastic, Awareness* e Bag!
Viva a V I D A!!!!

Top 10 of 2020: Screenshot Edition
Well, 2020′s drawing to a close! Bluntly put: What the fuck was that? “Pandemic brings civilization to its knees” wasn’t what I had in the cards, but it’s what we got.
Also I went through a lot of changes myself. Got more confident in my identity. Lost touch with some friends, but it was for the better. Met some great new ones too! Got to strengthen bonds with old friends also. Laughed, cried, broke down, and the rest of the gambit of emotions this year brought. Oh, and I graduated college too! But I’m not sure I want to do what I went to school for LMAO. It happens!
Now for the focus of the blog: I surprisingly didn’t play too much of The Sims(TM) this year! Truth be told it was on its way out, a bit down and out, at the end of 2019 and as we began 2020. The Sims, although a mainstay in my heart, didn’t captivate me nearly as much this year. Perhaps it was the stress of finishing my degree, the overwhelming feeling of living in a pandemic, or a combination thereof, but playing a “life” simulator wasn’t at the top of my list. I branched out into other franchises (Final Fantasy, Persona, The “Tales Of” series, etc.) instead.
But! In some spirit of a rewind, I put some of my favorite screenshots here! Not all were posted, but I wanted to share.
Here’s to 2021!

Sophie’s Exhaustive Dark Academia List
For a while now, since my dark academia rec list was such an unexpected success, I’ve wanted to create a list of all the dark academia books I’m personally aware of, regardless of whether I have already read them, as sort of a resource for the community. I have now done just that!
The titles in bold are the ones I have read. The ones I would especially recommend (which, okay, yeah, are almost all of the ones I’ve read) are in bold and italics. Note that this doesn’t mean I loved absolutely everything about the recommended book, just that I think it was good or worth reading overall.
If anybody is aware of a dark academia read that didn’t make the list, please leave a comment and I’ll update the list! Thank you! And thank you to everyone who has already recommended titles to me, helping me compile this list! :)
Also, just to be clear: My personal definition of dark academia would be a story that is set at a school or university or focuses heavily on academia otherwise (maybe the characters are in a secret book or debate club, discuss academic topics, something like that) and in which something bad or dark happens. This could be a crime (violent or non-violent), an accidental death, something supernatural going on... Note: Some of the books on the list (meaning of those I haven’t read) might only fit a looser definition of dark academia, e.g. maybe they have a dark subject matter and include some intellectual elements, even if the setting isn’t actually an academic institution.
And now, without further ado, enjoy!! As I said, I hope this will be a good resource for the dark academia community! And I want to update this list regularly so that it’s as exhaustive as possible! :)
