Fontaine Subé - Reims, France
In the late19th century, Auguste-Frédéric Subé, a wealthy merchant in Reims, left most of his estate to the city and designated 200,000 francs for the erection of a monumental fountain. It was built in the center of the Drouet d'Erlon square in 1906 according to the design of André Najoux. The figures around the column illustrate the local economic activities of the region of Reims - Vineyards, Commerce, Industry, and Agriculture. The four statues around the base symbolize the rivers Marne, Vesle, Suippe and Aisne.
A bronze statue of Fame originally stood at the top of the column, but it was removed by the occupying German army in 1942.  Sixty percent of the city was destroyed by the end of WWII, but most of the fountain was intact. In 1989, a new statue of Victory, by the sculptor Jean Barat, was added. The fountain was extensively restored in 2016 with a budget of € 650,000 provided by donors and corporate sponsors.

May 19, 1922 The Outbursts of Everett True by A.D. Condo
[ID: Everett True stands underneath the awning over a storefront, staring at a torn scrap of fabric dangling off the edge. An arrow pointing to the torn fabric informs us that it's been "this way for days." /end]
[ID: Everett yanks the torn fabric off the awning. The shopkeeper who owns the place walks up angrily behind him. /end] Shopkeeper: Hey, there, what's the idea in tearing my awning like that?!!
[ID: Everett brings his hand down onto the top of the shopkeep's head, knocking him to the ground. /end] Everett: CIVIC PRIDE!!! That's the idea!!!

Gatekeepers don’t belong in pride. Aroace lives matter and they belong in queer spaces
Oh God i love when straight people try to co-opt black lives matter for their own shitty belief. Literally no one has ever said your life didn’t matter. Not me and not history.
Because not dating isn’t a sexuality 😌

"City and County." Weekly British Whig (Kingston). May 8, 1913. Page 6. --- The city and the county should be brought into closer relationship, especially in all that pertains to their mutual welfare. The farmers should be asked to become members of the Board of Trade, and there should be the closest intimacy between the producer and the consumer. The example of one neighboring city in this respect is commented on. It made a special study of the cheese industry, showed by photographs the various processes of production, and used these in advertising the cheese business in England. Last fall, when in Duluth, I saw in the Commercial Club window a sam ple of the products of St. Louis county. This county was not famous for its agricultural products, but a young enthusiast conceived the idea of emphasizing the value of the soil by experiments and the results were most gratifying. Frontenac's agricultural expert, Mr. McTaggart, should be invited to give to the Board of Trade the results of his observations, and the fruits of his handiwork to the end that the products of our soil may get a greater prominence and receive the reputation which is its due. Farmers and citizens are interested in education, in good roads, in good markets. in railway connections and trade, and these could be promoted by co-operation and joint service.
The city is to be congratulated, in passing, upon its new spirit, the presence and activity of which are to be seen in the prosperity that prevails. The council is to be congratulated upon its splendid start in the matter of street paving. It has only made a beginning. Paving is expensive, but it is a paying investment, and it contributed incalculably to the advancement of the city.
The Board of Trade hesitates about suggesting anything to the council which falls within its duty, but the board tenders its support in the belated but important undertakings, and assures the mayor and aldermen that in respect to sanitation, health, city planning, and other things it is behind them and hopes for their success.

Minneapolis begins search for first-ever poet laureate
Tumblr media
by Jacob Aloi
Minneapolis will have its first official poet laureate next year. In a news release yesterday, the city announced a program that will seek out its first official literary and cultural ambassador.
“I am thrilled about our investment in a poet laureate and our deepened commitment to expand and infuse arts and culture into this enterprise work, in connection with residents and our communities,” said City Council President Andrea Jenkins in the news release.
The city’s Arts and Cultural Affairs Department is partnering with the Loft Literary Center on the program. The city will designate the poet laureate, while the Loft will oversee the program and application process.
“I think it’s like an amazing opportunity for our community to see how our literary culture can really be connected to that community,” said Lucia LoTempio, a Loft staffer who will manage the project.

Ten inessential worldbuilding features for local communities in your fantasy RPG:
A grievance or conflict of interest with a neighbouring community which the community's members feel much more strongly about than the issue's magnitude really warrants
A substance or commodity important to everyday life with no local source, and the complicated and inconvenient arrangement the community has made to obtain it from outside sources
A local practice or custom whose original motivation has been rendered obsolete by changing circumstances, and which is now carried forward out of tradition
Something that's technically illegal, but everyone does it on the sly anyway, with enforcement of its illegality being reserved for people the community's leaders want to mess with for unrelated reasons
An obscure piece of trivia or local history which the community's members regard as obvious and widely known, to the extent of treating outsiders with contempt for revealing their ignorance of it
Some undertaking or realm of achievement in which the community isn't particularly exceptional, but which the community's members believe they're the best around at as a point of civic pride
A mostly harmless thing that nobody talks about because its existence or some facet of its historical context is regarded as an embarrassment to the community
A particular prank that's become traditional to play on visitors to the community, and which occasionally gets taken further than is strictly appropriate
A specific area of the setting's history where what the community's members insist really happened is wildly at odds with the accepted version of events
A genuinely dangerous circumstance that everyone treats with casual disregard because it's always been there, and only a damn fool would actually get hurt by it anyway

Follow the Music Man
in time to the throb of African rhythm.  He’s tall and lean, stylishly frayed, fist bumping the man in the sleeping bag propped by the old cinema and the girl cross legged on the pavement – but on he swerves, swinging – things to do – people to see.  He looks ahead but sees all around. The large plastic bag, for-life, slung over his shoulder matches his trainers.  The rest of him is swathed in…
