She paused, her eyes flickering toward my office before returning to me. “Of course,” she nodded and made her way over.

I watched her closely, noting the subtle tension in her shoulders and how her fingers twisted the hem of her workout top.

Nic’s eyes darted past me, no doubt catching a glimpse of Lilith’s hawkish surveillance. She shuffled her stance, angling her body, an instinctive shield against Lilith’s piercing gaze.

Nic muttered, her lips curling into a bitter smirk. I could tell she was fighting to keep her calm exterior intact, the burden of our predicament threatening to fracture her usual unflappable demeanor. “Look,” I started, my words hanging in the air as I instinctively reached out to touch her arm but stopped myself just in time.

Her eyes locked onto mine, and for a moment, there was a flash of the old Nic—the one who’d laugh off a challenge and dive headfirst into the fray. Then it vanished, replaced by a guarded wariness that felt like a punch to the gut.

“I wanted to discuss keeping this... relationship strictly professional.” The words left a bitter taste in my mouth as they hung between us, discordant against the backdrop of the gym’s muted clatter of weights.

Her gaze drifted, not genuinely engaged in the conversation, yet she offered a nod. “I appreciate your understanding, Nic,” I murmured, my words strained as if trying to mask the underlying unease. In return came her automatic reply, lacking depth, “Of course.”

I watched her turn towards the door, her usual graceful movement now laden with a tension that seemed foreign to her lithe form. As she moved past Lilith’s line of sight, their gazes collided. Nic’s face, previously etched with the effort of maintaining composure, sparked with something fierce and unyielding—a silent challenge to the suspicion smoldering in Lilith’s dark eyes.

The air felt charged, like the static cling of a storm about to break. Lilith’s words slithered through the tension, “We’ve had issues in the past with inappropriate relationships between trainers and students.” The accusation hung there, her voice a poisonous dart aimed at my heart.

My jaw clenched, but Nic’s response tugged at my heart. Surprise briefly crossed Lilith’s features before a mask of icy indifference settled in. The tension thickened, fueled by anger, defiance, and turmoil.

Out of the blue, Delilah appeared, positioning herself next to Nic. A shared glance passed between them - not just concern but a hint of understanding as well. Nic took charge, brushing past Lilith. Watching them head towards the exit stirred up a strange mix within me - relief mingled with a twinge of disappointment. And beneath it all? A sense of awe.

I marveled at how the usually reserved Nic, often overshadowed by her husband’s neglect or Lilith’s sharp words, now stood so resolutely and articulately against Lilith. It revealed a side of her I hadn’t anticipated seeing, igniting something inside me. Maybe admiration...and a dash of that same exhilarating danger that had entangled me in this situation.
