"I love you," the younger man said ever so casually as if such declaration wouldn't change the world for the better or the worse. Solas couldn't blame him, he didn't know any better— wasn't allowed to know the truth yet. Francois smiled at him and then pulled Solas closer for a kiss and his soft, supple lips still tasted the same for the wolf in the sheep clothing.

Sweeter than honey and more tempting than any sins in the world. It felt like coming home.

Francois thought he was only making out with his magical studies professor, a humble but stern elf with a sarcastic sense of humor that could cut deep through the skin, but beneath it all was a man with so much compassion and passion. Not with the god who was responsible for remaking the world in his image— not with the beast who ripped everyone apart from their loved ones and their families when the old world ended and new one reborn.

Memories scattered like the ashes of old Thedas.

Some reborn and some lost in the wind, although Fen'harel had made sure that his friends, lovers and everyone they cared about shall be reborn again.

Dorian and The Inquisitor still emerged from the ruins and ashes, so did Leliana, Anders, Hawke, Fiona, Briala, The Trevelyan and Pavus families and others. The children whom Francois lost in the process of rebirthing this world shall be born again.

But the pain would return as well when Fen'harel loved ones eventually remembered what happened.

Solas wasn't ready for it—could never be ready when he had to eventually face the judgment of what he did. It was necessary to save the world but still didn't erase the anguish and suffering. Sometimes he wanted to keep his friends and lovers ignorant of what happened, let them living this new life unburdened. But it wouldn't be fair and the dread Wolf knew he couldn't keep lying or running away.

WIP Wednesday

I’ve got a bunch of random crap that may or may not turn into anything (probably not). Here you go, random crap. I haven’t been feeling great lately, but it’s good to know that I’m still writing. A lot. It’s random shit, but it’s still writing, so that’s something I guess.

One. 

Unfortunately, now I must find a new meaning for myself without you or a calamity to guide me. I no longer know who I am, amatus. I cannot go back to who I was before we met; you have changed me in so many wonderful ways. I am free to trust, to stand proud against my father, to fight for justice, to admit I was wrong, to learn from my mistakes. Knowing you, loving you, has made me stronger than I ever could have been alone. However, I still feel as though I am not yet the man I must become. My country needs a miracle. That the entire mess was the doing of my people, ancient and otherwise, was a blow.

Two.

“No,” she laughed, brushing a curl off her nose. “I should think not. We have plans tonight, Dorian. You’ll never guess who I just ran into!”

He sighed, rolling his eyes. “Unless it’s someone who will grade these papers for me and write a couple of grants, I’m afraid the only plans I have for the evening are take-out and a date with this pen.” He twirled the ballpoint between his fingers.

Three. 

Anders was smiling. Dorian couldn’t help himself; he bent over, kissing him, both men sighing with pleasure. Avoiding thoughts of the future had become their solace; they had both decided simultaneously and wordlessly that they would squeeze every moment of happiness out of the present before their lives fell to pieces.

Four. 

Her brow furrowed, searching for a memory that wasn’t tinged with sadness. “In truth, the things that hold the most weight in my mind are those that caused me the most grief. The contented ones were all shoved away. I had thought it better to believe that only sorrow existed, more fuel to add to the flames. It allowed me to function. The juxtaposition of what was with what could have been… It always hurt too much.”

Five.

They were supposed to be learning about the history of the Circles, but Anders had fallen asleep again. He hadn’t been resting properly at night since the Templars had brought him back, carted him in front of Irving and Gregiore; his lessons were the only place he could sleep these days. There were plenty of people about, the rooms were well-lit, and the enchanters droned endlessly. In essence, classes were the perfect draught; they set Anders right to sleep without fail.

Six. 

Fog descends over the dusty city as the small man behind the desk rolls a cigar. Red hair, red jacket, red chair. The shade stands out against the general darkness of the room; it feels like all the other colors had simply given up and walked out leaving only vibrant reds and dull grays.

The man pulls a lighter from his breast pocket, and the red flame casts his face in shadow, just for a moment. The end of his cigar catches alight and he sighs, leaning back. He offers a drag to the person facing him, but their refusal suits him just fine.

“It’s been a long time since anyone has had much in the way of hope around here. Kirkwall is a pit, it’s true, but sometimes you just find a whole and think to yourself, well, if I die here, at least nobody’ll have to start digging.

“The name’s Tethras. I’m something of a storyteller, those these days nobody is much in the mood for stories. But I’d like to think that once we stop telling them, that’s when life has ground us all down into such tiny pieces that there’s nothing left to salvage. Floating through the air like motes of dust.

“So, I’ll keep talking, as long as you’re listening, friend. I’m just a bit player in this story, but I know enough to tell you that it’s one worth sticking around for. Gets better with every telling.”

alright, so I almost didn't include Failure on the list, because it's VERY old, and I don't think I'll ever complete it. One upon a time, I wrote some futuristic, cyper-punk-ish-but-not-really shorts for DWC, the main one being Hacking. They were fun, and I had a DWC prompt I think this one was intended to fill, though I didn't really get to that part.

Anyway, in a futuristic world, where the underground organization The Inquisition fights against the corrupt politician Corypheus. Iwyn is a hacker/thief, Solas is a rogue scientist with secrets....

“I see you are done with the shower, vhenan. Thank you for retrieving this, it should be most useful for the Inquisition.

“Good.” Iwyn steps right behind him, runs her hands over his shoulders. “You could have joined me.”

Solas chuckles, and turns halfway around to look at her. “I wasn’t sweaty and dusty making my way through miles of air ducts.”

“It was hardly miles. And that wasn’t why I was… what is this?”

Solas turns his attention back to the table, and lets his hand fall away from her waist. Iwyn holds up a newspaper clipping, a full article with several pictures. He had forgotten about that, and his insides plummet.

Fairy is a recent DWC piece I'm working on, which got out of hand. Solas and Iwyn, post Crestwood, walks into a mushroom circle and is trapped by a fairy. It's fun writing, but it's too long and I just.. can't close. bleh.

“Your worried!” Lharrissah claps her hands excitedly and her wings buzz. “He’s your lover, isn’t he?”

“No. Yes. I mean – it’s complicated.”

“Seems like you should uncomplicate it. But anyway. We can do that later. For now, you have an important task. I need you to fetch something that’s very dear to me.”

“Of course you do.”

“Good.” More excited fluttering. Iwyn is surprised she doesn’t take off. “I need you to climb a mountain, and bring back a unicorn feather. I promise I’ll wake him then.”

“A feather? Not a goat or a druffalo or whatever a unicorn is?”

“Oh, you can’t bring me a unicorn. You’re… not qualified.”

“I see.”

au I left on there ambiguously. It's the first actual chapter of the Professor Lavellan AU, when if I turn it into an actual fic. Hm, some of this is not bad?

She pulls into the parking lot at what feels like an eternity later, though she still has time to get started on time. No time to get coffee though.

As she stomps towards her office, Professor Dorian Pavus breezes in. Thrusts a paper cup into her hand.

“A special gift for my newest co-worker. I know traffic was horrendous.”

She smiles in thanks. Dorian was the friendliest member of the staff, as she had discovered in the few weeks she had been here. Always quick to smile and happy to talk.

“I know, I am the most fabulous colleague you have ever had. No need to thank me. Now go teach. Your poor students are waiting.”

AU where Dorian isn’t really Dorian Pavus: hes a great great great great great descendant of the original, and he fucks around with time travel just like his adopted great grandfather (because of course his grandpa was as gay as he was duh) and ends up as the Dorian Pavus of the inquisition

AU in which Dorian is a history professor time traveler in which his gay modern ass falls head over heels in love with all these historical figures but he never thought The Iron Bull was like this from his writings and oh would you look at this it explains why scholars are really confused about Pavus’s dialect doesn’t match the traditional atlus Tevinter writings at the time

Fic writer meme!

Was tagged by @hawkeish @inquisitoracorn @hollyand-writes @musetta3 and @noire-pandora so it’s probably time I do this thing. Will tag @midnightprelude @oftachancer @silversynthesis and @fandomn00blr who have probably all already done this or at least been tagged but I lose track (let me know if you did this already) Name: I’m blarrghe on here and blarghe with only one r on AO3, keepin’ it simple. Fandoms: Just Dragon Age really Most popular oneshot: Anders, Attraction, Other Things That Start With A Most popular multichapter: The Merrill Sessions, by like, a lot. Which is a tad distressing because I’m not 100% on where it’s going yet... Actual worst part of writing: research probably. The other day I went “Halward Pavus is a venture capitalist!” and then I had to go learn what venture capitalists even do and on god it’s so boring. How you choose your titles: Depends. A few have shakespeare-inspired titles (regardless of any actually related shakespeare inspiration in the plot, but y’know, it’s shakespeare, so it’s in there somewhere.) My wips usually have silly titles so I just try to grab on to something from the story. Do you outline: Yes, to varying degrees. I usually write out a sort of point-form plan of events, and in places it might be elaborated on to the point of having full blocks of dialogue or basically perfect scenes. And it changes as the story shapes up. Every now and then a one-shot just pops out fully formed all by itself though. Usually between 2-4am or while I’m on a bus.

Ideas I probably won’t get around to, but wouldn’t it be nice?

- prequel fic to my longfic Shall We Not Revenge? that follows my OC Leila through the Fifth Blight when she was a child fleeing Kinloch Hold to the point where she joins the Inquisition, which would feature my Warden Surana and my Hawke both as background characters since she passes through both of their stories unseen. It would be very OC heavy, feature a lot of bardic intrigue in Orlais, and probably no one would read it but it would be a really fun and cool way to connect all my stories.

- Prequel fic for Taren Lavellan because wow I really did not have to go so hard on fleshing out his backstory but it’s all there. Would feature sexy sailors, a ton of Dalish lore that I just fully make up, and the Found Family trope. Would love to do it as a handful of comics one day or smth.

- post tresspasser “Veronica Mars style” canon-compliant college mystery fic where Taren goes to the University of Orlais to be a giant nerd/guest professor. It would feature Dorian being framed for murder and silly college roommate drama.

- Um, finishing Shall We Not Revenge. I’ll get back to it eventually. And then probably rewrite half of it because it’s a goddamn mess.

- A bunch of heavy metal power ballads about gay elves.

Callouts @ Me: I’ve never kept a regular schedule in my life. Best writing traits: People have said I am good at capturing character voices and I’d tend to agree. I think my dialogue is pretty good and I’ve definitely gotten better at descriptive metaphor of late. Also my OCs are very fleshed out & you should care about them.

Spicy Tangential Opinion: I’ve read so many good takes in response to this question over the last few days that it’s hard to think of something new to say! @inquisitoracorn in particular said something really good about recognition being more luck than skill which was true and also comforting.

Ok this has probably been said in a lot of ways but yesterday I went on a little rant because in this house we read a lot of comics and a lot of mythology. So recently it’s been the Poetic Edda and I found myself thinking about art and stories and human nature and Thor, who in Marvel comics is so wholly divorced from his Eddic origins. He’s walkin’ around in blue jeans and kissing scientists in a modern setting while having plotlines that are vaguely Norse-mythology-inspired and also other things. Meanwhile the mythology itself is just an accumulation of years of oral traditions that changed over time, and so on and so on. And so if a writer were to take the Thor of the MCU and stick him in a story based on like, a Jane Austen novel, the only difference there between that person and a Marvel writer is whether or not they’re getting paid.

Anyway the point is one part “fanfic is real writing” and one part “Information Wants To Be Free”. We talk about fanfic being great practice as if it’s practice for real writing, and while it is great practice, it’s also not actually any different to tell stories for free with characters and tropes and themes you took from other places because that’s all art ever is, anyway. And people do incredible things with themes and new riffs on existing thoughts and references to classics and on and on in fanfic! For the most part I think people in fandoms tend to understand and appreciate this, but because Anyone Can Put Anything On the Internet (even if it’s bad!) there’s a bit of stigma over the “realness” of the art. But making stories is what humans do and they should get to do it in whatever capacity they want. Art should be weird and personal and stolen from everywhere; there’s no such thing as a wholly original idea because that’s not how skills are learned. You gotta learn ‘em from somewhere -- from other people’s art. As long as you are not actively harming others or inciting harm then just like, make shit.

Oh also, that all said, you should definitely read real books to get better at writing.
