listening to the “listening in” podcast trailer and was jumpscared by how slow rachel brosnahans speaking voice is when she’s not in character as the most caricatured fictional comedian of my recent years

The Edge of Sleep Starters !
Taken from  the 2018 QCODE Media’ podcast, The Edge of Sleep! Some of these have already been edited. You can change them however you see fit!
“July 8th. It’s a beautiful day. The sun is shining, the birds are chirping, and… Everyone is dead.”
“It’s more like the world went to sleep and never woke up.”
“You need someone to keep your bed warm? Give me your phone.”
“Except it’s better than a video game because you actually get laid.”
“Actually, no. That’s a lie. I’m a complete wreck… I miss you.”
“So, what’s the problem. We love each other, right? Right?”
“I can’t believe I even have to say this, but you know I would never hurt you, right?”
“Sorry, I like to play my tunes so loud I can’t hear myself think.”
“What kind of hospital is this? You want me to leave my friend’s body on the side of the road?”
“Well, you still look good so… Go to hell.”
“(Name), right now I just need you to shut up and fall in line.”
I couldn’t hear what they were saying, but I could see their faces. Every one of them looked afraid.”
“It’s not the same. They do the killing, we do the fixing.”
“The worst part is the fear in people's eyes. The look of terror when they know they’re going to die.”
“You know you’re really ugly when you cry? Why don’t you shut the fuck up?”
“I’m okay. I think I’m okay. I’m more scared than I am tired.”
“It’s hard to explain. It felt like deja vu mixed with a panic attack.”
“Scientists and medical practicers love a good enigma. It’s fun for them. It’s just not that fun when /you’re/ the enigma. And that’s what I was.”
“We don’t need empathy. We need help.”
“Did you say a monkey that looks like John Cena?”
“That’s why I’m bleeding. I think I’ve been shot. There’s a hole in my rib cage.”
“If you scream, I’ll cut your tongue off.”
“I made him laugh! Is that good?”
“Fuck that. He’d probably like to hear me beg, I won’t give him the satisfaction.”
“Well, they say broken bones tend to mend faster than broken hearts.”
“She saw something dark in me, it outweighed the light.”
“I will use my personal suffering to entertain him.”
“If we stay and keep fighting, the bad thing will give up. It will get bored and leave you alone forever.”
“I’ve never seen you this way. Like a person that got a glimpse into hell.”
“Basically, it’s a fucking miracle it wasn’t worse.”
“If we kept quiet, we didn’t have to talk about what had happened to the world. Or to our friends or loved ones.”
“In the silence, we could hide from what we feared most.”
“You’re not selfish for wanting to love someone. That’s what everyone wants. You’re just… human.”
“Hey, get your finger out of my sauce.”
“If you’re suggesting we help kill this guy, say what you fucking mean.”
“How do you think their parents felt when they had to bury their fucking kids?”
“Goodnight forever, humankind. It was fun while it lasted.”
“We’re all tired and scared. It’s not cool if I’m the only one who can’t keep their shit together.”
“My dad got fucked up the day I was born, so I’m gonna get fucked up on the day that I die.”
“This is the end, man. And you don’t get to tell me how I choose to die.”
“If you want to die, go do it somewhere else.”
“Don’t worry. I can handle a bad dream. I’m a pro.”
“If this doesn’t work, I’ll bring you back to life and kill you again.”
“Something that does not belong here. It wishes to eat the world.”
“My past, your future, our home.”
“What chance do we have if we stay here? Look at us. We’re all dying as we speak.”
“In one night, a nightmare killed the world.”
“If I fall asleep, will I become like them? Like the people who tried to hurt us?”
“Hey, fuckos, this is your captain speaking. Still alive back there?”
“Maybe you’re going to die. Maybe you can join us.”
“I want to see the stupid look on your face right before you die.”
“I dreamed of you.”
“They are hungry, greedy. They see, and they take.”
“I tried ending it all a hundred different ways, but there was no way out.”
“All that I was was being chipped away, one memory at a time.”
“Just one face. Please. That’s all I want to remember. Just let me keep one smile.”
“I had forgotten who I was, and all that was left was loneliness.”
“It was the pain of everything it took from me and everything I’d lost.”
“They said they’ve been waiting for you. They have seen you in their dreams.”

Oh okay I see what you mean. I've been avoiding podcasts by wondery and any bigger productions. I feel like I don't have to hold my breath as much with indie podcasts, whereas if I hear there's a female protag or a nonbinary character or something by a bigger studio I feel like I'm waiting for the shoe to drop.
yeah!
i've noticed a lot of smaller audio productions (or honestly, audio productions that started out small, even if they grew larger later) tend to come from a different starting place than bigger productions. Like, a lot of the smaller audio dramas have a specific story/vibe they want to tell without all the social or practical restraints other medias have or to reach out to a smaller and/or marginalized audience.
meanwhile, the bigger companies sometimes seem to approach podcasting more as, like, a TV show they're trying to pitch to a major network? with about as much sensitivity reading as you'd expect from that.
100% get the feeling of waiting for the shoe to drop (whether it's bad stereotypes, bad politics, or whether this big company podcast is gonna hold my hand and tell me that being gay is okay).
sometimes they're good! QCODE Media is a fairly big-name media company that produces some good stuff (Left/Right Game [horror], Bad Vibes [horror]), but yeah, overall, i've had way more like with indies.

The Left Right Game
Qcode Media
Sci-fi, horror, mystery, supernatural, urban legend, thriller, detective, investigative, experiential
3.9/5
Adapted from a creepypasta on Reddit, this creative fiction podcast that matches tantilizing premises and atmospheric sound effects to the brilliant, ethereal voice of Tessa Thompson easily inspires the listener’s imagination into picturing the unsettling horrors encountered by this varied cast of personalities. A crew of amateur sleuths, bored hobbyists and paranormal fans gather together for a road trip through the heartlands of Arizona to investigate the urban legend of the ‘Left Right Game’. As simple as it is to play the game - get in a car and take a left turn, then a right, ad infinitum; no one could have anticipated the cost that the journey would exact upon each and every single one of them.
Throwing herself in with the lot is a brilliant, ambitious young journalist named Alice Sharman. Curious and analytical, Alice is inclined to believe that she is along for the ride just to humor expedition leader Robert’s obsession with a fringe conspiracy on the Internet - until her perception of reality is irrevocably transformed.
Shocking interactions and malicious surprises are experienced by us, such as with the harmless-sounding, and then abruptly threatening Hitchhiker that every member of the crew must give a ride, and must not speak to. Visceral imagery of a disturbing scenes are narrated to us, such as of Jubilation city, a stretch of American suburbia with one street of nuclear families having perfectly synchronized dinners on their lawns; and on the next turn, an identical street with notoriously absent inhabitants, red Xs marked over every front door, and piles of clothes discarded on the floor - with zero explanation.
The everlasting hope on journeying through the Left Right Game is that there must be some eventual end, a pot at the end of this psychedelic rainbow - a point at which there are no more turns left to make. Horrifying, captivating, equal parts punishing and rewarding, the Left Right Game dares one and all to come along and figure out just how far the path goes. It doesn’t presume to stand between man and his unending quest for an answer. But it’s on you to not forget that it’s been made clear right from the start that there isn’t - and never will be - an end.
Would enjoy this if you liked: Annihilation (2018 film), the SCP Foundation

Tumblr media
glad you like my design >:) in this house we love a nasty fear demon. I think the podcast deserves more exposure! it’s kind of cheesy and silly at points but it’s apparent that a lot of work went into it and I think there are some really good performances and entertaining stories in it!

Have you read the article “Listen up: why indie podcasts are in trouble” yet?
https://www.theguardian.com/media/2021/aug/01/listen-up-why-indie-podcasts-are-in-peril
Ah yes this poppued up on my twitter this morning but I only just got a chance to read it!
It does fall into the pitfall of mostly talking about non-fiction podcasts, but the namedrops of Lauren Shippen and Ella Watts as cool, it was more than just the cursory namedrop of WTNV that a lot of stuff does (they're mentioned too). This specific paragraph is also great, about big companies starting to move into the podcast field when it was built by indie creators:
"It feels a little like gentrification: cheap, diverse, slightly grotty areas of a city that have their own style and rhythm and culture are discovered by those with money and the character changes. Yes, those small local cafes might still exist for a while, but if another, bigger premises is taken over by a brand that appears local, but is actually Pret, then newcomers won’t know – “I just found this great place!” – and will spend their money there."
This part was also very interesting as well because I haven't heard of this company, but the concept they're talking about rings very true in a "yeah that checks out" way
"This aspect might be changing: several people pointed me to dramas made by QCode, a new, well-funded podcast company formed by ex-Hollywood insiders. QCode, its critics suggest, takes the concepts of indie drama – dystopia, horror, sci-fi, diversity – and then straightens them out, making queer relationships straight, and (you guessed it) employing big Hollywood celebrities as actors, such as Richard Madden and Demi Moore."
And if I'm gonna be nitpicky the article does fall pray to the trap of mentioning a bunch of non-fiction hosts and a couple of fiction writers, but never mentioning a single sound designer/editor which feels weird because that's half the medium! But overall, good article, thank you for the link!

Anon from the twink definition discourse here! Long time no see! I noticed some BetterHelp discourse, so, here to spill the tea again (●'◡'●)
Firstly, some general context, articles and links: DiscreetOnlineCouncelling.com - My Beef With BetterHelp, An Insider Review. PatientsLounge.com - My Unbiased BetterHelp Review. Polygon.com - The BetterHelp Scandal Explained. MaastrichtUniversity.nl - How BetterHelp Changed Our Perspective on Influencer Responsibility. Reddit.com - Please Don't Use BetterHelp.
The Core Problems
BetterHelp is only as good as its therapists. When the original concerns were brought to light in 2019, BetterHelp was found severely lacking with its range of therapists and their specialities. Concerns included a disproportionate rate of white to POC therapists, a lack of therapists who are speciality-trained in things such as LGBT+ counselling, race-based counselling, trauma-specific therapy, ect. Users also had complaints that therapists were disorganised, frequently unavailable or weren't providing any resources or beneficial tools for progression.
Next, BetterHelp's data protocols and practises. BetterHelp is American-based and has an opt-out system for data collection and third-party marketing, however this combined with their excessive user data mining, data harvesting, marketing and user tracking practises have raised concerns over confidentiality breaches, immortal use of data collection, ect. BetterHelp is also accused of issues surrounding transparency regarding their data protocols and marketing. Some such concerns included confidential discussions, recorded sessions and data between clients and therapists being harvested for user data which was then sold to third-party vendors who used it for targeted marketing.
Third; pricing. BetterHelp advertises itself as the most affordable on-demand therapy option on the market, however prices start at $60-$90 (£40-£70) per week and are subject to unlimited change based on varying factors such as your location, the therapist you choose, how often you use the service, ect. These prices have been lowered from original quotes extending up to $200 per week. While still cheaper than privatised licensed therapy, these prices are exorbitant for the services and availability the app offers.
BetterHelp is also being accused of purchasing/farming positive reviews, though this is still under investigation. Discrepencies and suspicious activity can be seen on sites such as the BetterHelp UK TrustPilot page, where 5* reviews are flooding in close proximity from accounts with little to no otherwise activity, similar wording, same time stamps, ect. BetterHelp has yet to respond to accusations. (Fun fact: Google was actually proved to be farming its own positive Google Chrome reviews on the Play Store in 2020 after introducing the tab function changes, which saw Chrome's rating flop from 4.2* to 3.1* in a matter of days. Google declined to comment or respond to the evidence and continues to farm fake reviews for various Google products.)
Discussion
Your Anons are a little behind the news in that BetterHelp's lax practises were challenged in 2019, and as such the platform has already undertaken several changes in an attempt to reverse its reputation and public image. This is not to say its perfect, however, as BetterHelp is still being challenged over its confidentiality, suitability and other concerns.
Ultimately BetterHelp is still on the plank, as they say, though it routinely advertises itself as adapting, understanding and changing itself to better understand and fit the needs of its customers. BetterHelp is still ultimately a business model and for-profit organisation, however. I personally cannot see them changing any of their data concerns except for transparency and declaration clarity.
Its also worth noting that Distractible is ultimately managed by QCode/Wood Elf Productions(/Media) and that the parent company is ultimately responsible for sponsorships and partnerships. M/B/W have discussed in a semi-recent episode the realities of their adverts and how they tackle them.
Based on similar case studies, they will receive information packets and staple criteria either directly from the sponsor's PR teams or from QCode/WEP such as 'be sure to include X slogan' or 'state X, Y and Z product specifics' but are largely given free-reign on the scripting for their promotional segments.
I hope this helps to provide some context and insight. For anyone who intends further investigation please account for the fact that there will be discrepancies between 2019 data and 2022 data.
Veeery helpful thankyouu!
