So...more thoughts about the Chosen One AU, this takes place several days after the Life Debt is created.

Jedi Master Mace Windu stares at the young woman blankly. Her hands are bound in front of her and she has a a distinctive pout on her face. More curiously, Captain Keeli keeps inching towards her, reaching towards the binder as if to free her, and has had his hands smacked away several times already. "Master Ima-Gun," He finally says, "What, exactly, is going on here?" Mace asks, when in truth he means, 'what the actual kriff, man?' Ima-Gun Di has a pleasant smile on his face, as he introduces the young woman sitting on the floor, "She saved our lives on Ryloth." "And you arrested her for it?" Depa asks, horrified. "We haven't arrested her," The Jedi said lightly, "She claimed that I created a life debt between my battalion and her, and myself and her. So I brought her here to verify the truth of those claims." "You can't do this to me!" The young woman shouts loudly, "I am a Republic Citizen and you are not allowed to hold me against my will." "Exactly! This is kidnapping!" Obi-Wan says as he stands to head over to the young woman. "Life debt, you say." Master Yoda hums, "Saved you, she did?" "Yes Master." Master Yoda hums again, and then turns his gaze to Captain Keeli, "Anxious, you feel, Captain." "This feels really kriffing weird, General." Keeli admits, "Every fiber of my being is telling me that I need to uncuff her and that I need to protect her from you. But she also tried to bite me. Three times." "Not comfortable around Jedi," Plo Koon murmurs, "Curious for a Republic Citizen." She glares at him, "Yeah, well, I was an exiled ten year old who turned to a Jedi for help, and all I got was a head pat and a go home to your parents." "Oh? Exiled?" She scoffs, "Turns out it's dangerous keeping a Chosen One around. Even a baby Chosen One." "My dear," Obi-Wan's smile is strained, "Prophecies are tricky-" "There's a Major Death God living on the lower levels of Coruscant feeding off of the death and despair of the people who live there. And his personal Champion sits in the highest seat on the senate." She interrupts, and then the manacles pop open, and she hops to her feet, "Also, his champion is apparently a sith." The entire room falls silent, and she beams at them, "Great! Good talk!" She points at Keeli, "I release you from your life debt?" She pauses, "Did that...anything? No. Yeah, I didn't think so." She takes a step back, "So...I'mma go. Before said Death God realizes that I'm here and tries to kill me..." She almost makes it to the door, when Master Yoda twines the Force around her and pulls her back to the center of the room, "Further conversation, this requires."

Weekend Top Ten #539

Top Ten Things I’ve Suggestion to my Daughter That She Refuses to Consider

As is my custom, when one of my brood hits a birthday, I turn my Top Ten over to them, to pick whatever listings take their fancy. My eldest, who has just had a Significant Birthday this last week, has decided – as is her wont – to use this facility to mock me.

How very dare she, etc.

So what we have here, then, is a list of various things I have recommended to her at some point. Movies I have unsuccessfully pitched for on family movie nights. TV series I thought she’d enjoy. Books that she should, as a person what is good at reading and likes doing it and stuff, have a crack at. At all turns I am dismissed, because chief among my daughter’s interests is Disagreeing with Me. In a manner very much like John Constantine immediately lighting a cigarette after being cured of cancer, Daughter #1 will gladly curtail her own enjoyment if said enjoyment proves I might have been right about something. To whit, the very act of my recommendation instantly makes any endeavour unpalatable to her. She mainlines contrariness. She luxuriates in spite.

None of this is unexpected. Whereas I was always quite stoked by the various films my parents described to me – Close Encounters, Pale Rider, whatever – I do know kids like to find their own route down the mountain, and don’t want to follow in the footsteps of their parents. They also like to just be dicks about it sometimes, and that’s fine too. I just thought maybe she’d have waited till her teens before this all kicked in, but I guess that’s progress for you.

Anyway, here you go: a special daughter birthday list of things she’s deliberately denying herself just to make me sadder. Tt, as Batman would say. Tt indeed.

Batman: Mask of the Phantasm (1993): my kids are certainly not super-phobic, and Daughter #1 in particular is a bit of an animation nut, so this film could go down well. But I’ve gone on about how excellent it is to such an extent that it’s anathema to her now. I mean, I dunno; maybe it’s a bit slow and serious for her tastes. But it’s a masterpiece, goddammit.

Indiana Jones (1982-2023): it’s tricky finding the right ground for adventure movies, because while they like Star Wars, they’ve not shown much in the way of enthusiasm for similar action-oriented films. There’s so much here that they’d find cool, including Marion Ravenwood; my kids are big on spunky female leads. And Han Solo is my youngest daughter’s favourite Star Wars character. But no. this is always refused. As Daughter #1 says, “I don’t like Nazis but I still don’t want to see their faces melted.”

She-Ra and the Princesses of Power (2018-20): this one is irritating, because she was watching this show. I don’t think I even introduced it to her! I think she found it herself! But I’d gotten into it and I wanted to see how it all panned out, whereas she drifted away and couldn’t be mithered. And so whenever I suggested she watch it, she refused. And now it’s on this list. Bah.

DuckTales (1987-90; 2017-21): she likes all these different daft cartoons, like The Loud House or Teen Titans Go!, so I thought she’d like this. Whether it’s the vintage eighties version or the modern update, what’s not to love about Duckburg? And sure enough she gave it a whirl but then refused to go further. Having said that, I don’t feel I’ve really gone on about it too much, so maybe she just didn’t like it.

His Dark Materials (Philip Pullman, 1995-2000): Daughter #1 is a voracious reader, at a reading level far above her actual age. So I think it’d be beneficial to stretch herself a little bit, reading books meant for older kids. The problem, of course, is balancing complexity of language with complexity of tone; what teen books are suitable for a pre-teen? I thought this would fit the bill, especially as she likes a lot of serialised adventure narratives. But thus far, she’s refused to give it a try. Maybe coz I said it was one of my favourite books.

Willow (1988): another example of me wanting us all to sit down of a Friday night and watch a family-focused adventure movie. Especially because there’s a TV series out soon! I love Willow, and I reckon the kids would be into it too. Except not, because denying my enjoyment has to take priority.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (from 1984): effectively a slight-less-wacky Teen Titans Go!, TMNT is – in its myriad forms – really the sort of thing that would be up Birthday Girl’s street, apart from the fact I’ve suggested she might enjoy it. I don’t mind what version she watches, I still think it’d be cool. Maybe she’ll get into the new game. Probably not.

The Marvel Cinematic Universe (from 2008): see, this one’s a bit weird. It’s true that I do bang on about the MCU an awful lot. But she has shown some interest: she wanted to watch Iron Man, until she found the desert attack at the beginning too intense; and she recently watched (and allegedly enjoyed) The First Avenger, even if she didn’t cry when he fell on the grenade like all good-hearted people do. I honestly think this is in part a reaction to both me and my wife suggesting Ant-Man a few times, and also just generally her attacking me where I’m most vulnerable. She’s a proper Thanos, this one.

Ghostbusters (1984): I’m gonna be honest, I’ve never really earnestly suggested this one, because Daughter #1 is of a rather sensitive disposition and I honestly think she’d be utterly freaked out by the library ghost and the terror dogs and stuff. I mean, I used to find that terrifying in the eighties, but that was also the thrill. Anyway, she refuses, which is fine in this instance, because I’d quite like to avoid having to explain what that ghost is doing to Dan Aykroyd’s trousers.

The Hunger Games (Suzanne Collins, 2008-10): I don’t wanna short-change you here, but this is just His Dark Materials all over again. Except a bit more annoying, because whilst I can see her bouncing off the intricacies of HDM, I think she’d actually get really into Katniss murdering children left, right, and centre. Anyway, the odds of her getting over herself and giving it a whirl are not in our favour. That was a joke.

My main takeaway from all this is that Star Wars and Transformers aren’t on the list, so there’s hope.

Back when WarnerMedia (which technically no longer exists in the same form) announced that it would be premiering its entire slate of 2021 films on HBO Max, this is the kind of month they likely had in mind. For HBO Max’s list of new releases in August 2021 is highlighted by an honest-to-goodness blockbuster.

The Suicide Squad is set to premiere Aug. 5 on HBO Max. This film featuring some of DC Comics’ most curious villains borrows its name, format, and many of its characters from the David Ayers-directed 2016 film Suicide Squad. This time around, the rogues gallery is directing by James Gunn (Guardians of the Galaxy) and his colorful disposition. In addition to The Suicide Squad, August sees the arrival of the Hugh Jackman-starring Reminiscence on Aug. 20.

It’s a good month for movies overall on HBO Max. Many intriguing library titles arrive on Aug. 1, including Collateral, The Fugitive (1993), The Shawshank Redemption, and Spawn. The Jurassic Park trilogy (Aug. 14), and Godzilla v. Kong (Aug. 17) make their return to the Warner streaming service a little later on.

HBO Max’s original TV offerings can’t compete with The Suicide Squad in August 2021, but there is still plenty to enjoy. The third season of erstwhile DC Universe series Titans premieres on Aug. 12. That will be followed by the second season of former Comedy Central delight The Other Two.

I don’t but I can make one.

Fandoms: The X Files, Marvel’s Daredevil/Punisher (don’t get me started on how badly I hate comic canon Frank Castle but fuck me do I love the tv version), The Walking Dead, Welcome To Night Vale (since 2012, baby!), Limetown, Alice Isn’t Dead, Being Human US, Friday Night Lights (tv), American Gods, Skyrim, The Last of Us, Resident Evil, Silent Hill (game franchise, longtime fan), DC but only as it relates to Selina, Ivy or Harley; Marvel in general (MCU/Comics though I’ve got ~thoughts~ about a lot of their comic runs) but I’m simultaneously a Tony Stark fangirl and detractor, John Constantine/Hellblazer (I guess that’s technically DC), Pacific Rim, Star Wars, LOTR, Anne Rice’s Vampire Chronicles, Within The Wires podcast. I’m sure there’s more but they’re the only ones I can think off offhand. I loved the Hunger Games books and about half of the movies but I can’t say I consider myself fandom.

Fandoms I write about: The Walking Dead, Marvel/MCU (Avengers, Punisher, Cap, nearly every woman on the roster), there may or may not be some American Gods coming up the pipe soon.

Gave it a chance, not for me: Teen Wolf (it was cute, I like the cast, but I think I’m a little too old for their target demographic), Vampire Diaries (I have bad associations with Somerhaulder thanks to a shitty RP experience), Once Upon A Time (watched every episode with Witwer, had no idea what the hell was going on), Mortal Instruments (my best friend took me to the movie, I do like the actress playing lead on the tv show but I don’t care enough to watch it), I inherited all my wife’s reader-born hatred of anything related to Divergent but I did hate-watch the first one because Miles Teller.

I was once a huge Supernatural fan but I fell off around season 7 in syndication, watched 8 on Netflix and thought it was okay but honestly I’ve lost interest in the show completely at this point. I casually watch OINTB, didn’t start until like a month ago but I can see where a lot of the criticisms come from (also, I’m stuck in an ugly, ugly place between my throbbing lust for Pablo Schreiber and wanting to strangle Pornstache with my bare hands).

Sensor Sweep: Wulfhere, Monster Manual, Heroism, Howard A. Jones

Heroism (Rogue Blades Entertainment): “The heroic books, even if printed in the character of our mother tongue, will always be in a language dead to degenerate times …” Henry David Thoreau wrote those words in the mid-19th Century for his distinguished book, Walden. They rang true then and they ring true today. Of course there will be those who say we do not live in degenerate times, that we live in the greatest of all ages, that our technological and social achievements are pressing us towards some utopia, but those who are true students of history and have open eyes might argue otherwise, or at least they might hold more than a little skepticism about the potential greatness of the immediate future.

Fantasy (Tor.com): Here’s a funny thing about “action reads:” a lot of people would equate that to mean a whole lot of running and chasing and swordplay. They wouldn’t be wrong, of course, but all the physical action in the world can’t liven up a bland tale, or make boring characters interesting, and there’s actually plenty of forward momentum and tension to be had in some fantasy adventure stories without the more obvious blood-letting. And then of course there’s lyrical prose. Me, I prefer to see my action with great characters and some lovely writing, and today I’m going to share a few favorites that deliver all those things.

Writers (Slate.com): Three years ago, over breakfast, my friend Helen handed me a novel about a quest that, unknown to both of us, would set me off on a quest of my own. The book was called The Dragon Waiting, and it was written by the late science fiction and fantasy author John M. Ford. Helen placed the mass-market paperback with its garish cover in my hands, her eyes aglow with evangelical fervor, telling me I would love it. I would soon learn that, owing to Ford’s obscurity, his fans do things like this all the time. Soon, I would become one of them.

Writers (The Nerd Daily): In this sequel to For the Killing of Kings, Howard Andrew Jones returns to the ring-sworn champions of the Altenerai in Upon the Flight of the Queen to continue this thrilling, imaginative and immersive epic fantasy trilogy.

We had the pleasure of chatting to author Howard Andrew Jones about his upcoming fantasy sequel Upon the Flight of the Queen, which publishes on November 19th from St. Martin’s Press. Howard talks about what readers can expect and the challenges he faced, the inspiration behind the trilogy, what’s next for him, and more!

Genre Fiction (Dark Worlds Quarterly): There are those Fantasy writers and critics that accuse Robert E. Howard’s Conan of lacking any depth because he just hacks his way out of trouble. In fact, I think it was Robert Bloch in his intro to Wolfshead (Bantam Books, 1979) who said it, qualifying his words with the fact that he preferred Howard’s subtler characters such as Kull or Bran Mak Morn. I would hate to disagree with such a wonderful writer as Bob Bloch but I think he kinda missed the point. We want to see Conan hack his way out. Just as people pay gobs of money to be ringside at a boxing match.

Subculture (Amatopia): But if you show up humble and willing to learn, and don’t lie about knowing stuff about the subculture, you’ll find you have a whole bunch of cool new friends eager to help ease you in. At the very least, the people in the subculture will respect you, even if they may resent your intrusion. In time, you learn to be a part of the crew.

Fantasy (Matthew J. Constantine): The first novel in the Prydain Chronicles, The Book of Three introduces us to Taran the assistant pig-keeper, Hen Wen the pig, Gurgi the…um…wildman?, and the rest, as well as the Welsh inspired land of Prydain. The book drips with a sort of gauze filtered, dreamy Fantasy in a similar vein to Tolkien’s Shire, particularly from The Hobbit. Reading the book, I kept thinking it would have fit as a comic strip in the tradition of Prince Valiant. It also has a lot that could translate well into an animated film or potentially a live action film these days.

D&D (Skulls in the Stars): Die, Vecna, Die! (2000), by Bruce R. Cordell and Steve Miller. This module has the curious distinction of being perhaps the last “old school” adventure ever published! Die, Vecna, Die! was one of two mind-bogglingly epic adventures released with universe-spanning ramifications, allowing DMs to have a reason for transitioning from 2nd edition AD&D to Wizards of the Coast 3rd edition D&D. The other is The Apocalypse Stone (2000).

Fiction (DMR Books): Next week DMR Books will make our first foray into historical adventure fiction with the first book publication of Wulfhere by A.B. Higginson! Wulfhere, Higginson’s only novel, was originally serialized in Adventure magazine in 1920. In the Dark Ages of England, kingdoms were ready to be carved out by any with the ambition and might to do so. The mightiest ruler of all was Penda, Lord of Mercia, a man as strong as he was ruthless. He had no equal in martial prowess, except for his son Wulfhere…

Tolkien (Alas Not Me): Crucial to the tale of Eärendil the Mariner is his ship, Vingelot or Vingelótë, without which Eärendil would have been stuck in a port on a western bay where lonely sailors pass the time away talking about their homes. The name Vingelot gives us a tantalizing and frustrating example of how very easily stories can be lost, likely forever.

Writers (Mystery File): Over the course of his writing career, Clark Howard may have written over 200 short stories, not all of them criminous in nature, plus a couple dozen crime novels and collections. This does not include an unspecified number of works of true crime the editor of EQMM mentions in her introduction to this tale. Howard hardly ever used a character more than once, and “Blues in the Kabul Night” is no exception. When mercenary for hire Morgan Tenny smuggles himself into war-ravaged Kabul, the capital of Afghanistan, it is for a specific reason. His twin brother is in a high security prison there and scheduled for execution soon, unless Morgan can do something about it.

RPG (Brain Leakage): As I mentioned a few weeks back, I’ve been at work on an Appendix N inspired science fantasy series, one that envisions what D&D fiction might have looked like if it followed the wilder literary roots of the game, rather than filling in the map of TSR and WotC’s pre-fab fantasy worlds. And while I still plan on writing that, the fact is my recent thought experiments on what Fantasy Effing Vietnam would look like have gotten a bit more attention. To the point that I’ve gotten several messages in public and in private expressing interest in a published print version.

Calendars (Mens’s Pulp Mags): Now, with Eva’s permission, we’re offering a special collectible to go with the book: the Authorized 2020 Eva Lynd Calendar. It’s a limited edition calendar featuring photographs and artwork Eva modeled for, and it’s available exclusively from me on eBay. If you’re a regular reader of this blog, you probably know why Eva Lynd is so familiar to fans of the men’s adventure magazines (MAMs) published in the 1950s and 1960s.

Fiction (Sacnoth’s Scriptorium): So, I’ve been trying for a long time to find an answer to the two questions: Did the Inklings ever read Lovecraft? And Did Lovecraft ever read the Inklings? So far as the first question goes, the answer is: still not proven. We know that Warnie Lewis was a fan of ‘scientifiction and read some of the pulp magazines like AMAZING STORIES. And THE NOTION CLUB PAPERS suggests that the Inklings were fairly conversant in science fiction. Certainly there are some echoes of Lovecraftian themes in Tolkien’s account of the Things beneath Moria, Lewis’s description of the subterranean world far beneath the surface of Venus, and especially Wms’ Cthulhesque octopoid-lords of P’o-l’u.

RPG (Walker’s Retreat): With last weekend’s Big Brand marketing event masquerading as a fan convention came the announcement–with no release date–of the fourth installment of its iconic isometric dark fantasy action RPG franchise. You know which one I’m talking about, and it’s not the MMORPG. I thought I’d take the time to give you all some alternatives that you may have overlooked or forgotten about, beside Path of Exile and adaptation of other Big Brand properties.

Art (Pulp International): Above, numerous Italian posters for 1960s and 1970s westerns. Some of these movies were true spaghetti westerns (produced in Italy and shot in Europe, often Spain), while others are U.S. productions. All the imagery is beautiful. The artists responsible include Renato Casaro, Rodolfo Gasparri, Averardo Ciriello, Aller, aka Carlo Alessandrini, et al.

Review (Hillbilly Highways): I bought Congregations of the Dead over a year ago on a bit of a lark because it was cheap. Which isn’t to sale that it didn’t sound right up my alley. A country noir/urban fantasy/horror mashup with significant pulp influences? (A secondary character is named Carter DeCamp in an obvious homage to Lin Carter and L. Sprague de Camp and Manly Wade Wellman’s characters Silver John and John Thunstone seem obvious influences as well.) What I didn’t realize is how damn good it would be.

D&D (The Other Side): For today’s Monstrous Monday I want to do another review. For this one, it still follows my ‘Back to Basic’ theme I have been doing all year even though it is not a Basic-era D&D book. It is though one of my Basic era books. The book is the Monster Manual and it was just about 40 years ago that I first held this book in my hand. This is the book. This is the book that got me into D&D and RPGs.

Warhammer (Warpscream): This book opens with a look at the bleak life of the average imperial citizen. Urinating in water recyclers on the arid world of Baal. It’s one of Guy Haley’s strengths is that he can paint such a despondent picture so rapidly to open with. The story briskly moves along as we are made aware of a dire threat to the world of the Blood Angels.

Writing (Frontier Partisans): I guess it triggered a memory of Robert E. Howard’s description of his own trip to the Carlsbad Caverns in the early 1930s. Howard is best known for his creation of the fantasy character Conan of Cimmeria — and he translated his experience in New Mexico directly into a Conan story. . . The power of the works of J.R.R. Tolkien derives in great part from his ability to evoke a landscape that is at once fantastical and real. Tolkien was profoundly affected by landscape — beloved and comfortable; awe-inspiring; terrifying and appalling.
