2000 Stockholm - Number 10 - Severina - "Daj mi, daj"

Severina - the only truly bona fide Croatian celebrity (or so say Nacional, Croatian weekly). Music star of the Croatian charts since independence in the early 1990s, regular feature of the gossip columns, singer of the unofficial 1998 anthem of the Croatian World Cup team, seven albums released and now finally singing at Dora. What took her so long?!

She's here singing Daj mi, daj (Give me, give me), which sounds like it's going to be a demanding song of expectation and desire. She bounces on stage with a rose at her throat and a hot trio of dancers. It turns out to be a song in which Severina is at the heart-broken end of a relationship and wants to be given the courage and strength to carry on. Quite the twist there.

Getting Severina to enter Dora must have been a coup for the organisers and it might even have expected her to walk off with the crown. While she did finish third in the televote, the regional juries were far less impressed, and they represented 95% of the result. She ended up eighth overall with this strong, catchy song.

There might have been some push-back against her as she was a frequent name in the scandalous sections of the tabloids and the juries may not have wanted her to represent the country, but this year it was not Severina's year. She did try once more. In 2006 when she won Dora and went to Eurovision. And that was after her sex-tape scandal!

The Dora of 2000 was only a minor blip in Severina's career she carried on releasing album after album, numerous singles and collaborations, she starred in a rock opera produced for the stage as well as other stage roles. She's done cameo's in films and has survived so much scandal and gossip it's kind of unbelievable.

Let me tell you something. One of my uncles - he was crazy, it's true, but he also had moments of genius - believed, or said he believed, that books, the objects that we call books, are animated by a kind of collective spirit. Migrations, invasions, outbreaks, extinctions. There are wars between different kinds or genres of books, he said. And, as in real wars, the best don't always win; but for us, in the end, there are no losers, although they all fade away.
