The Tartakovsky's Primal vibes are strong. I would not be surprised if the director drew inspiration from it. Everything from the title, character, dialog-light execution, and score, reeks of it. MUST WATCH!

Here’s How To Watch ‘Sisu’ Free Online: Is Sisu (2023) Streaming On HBO Max Or Netflix
Sisu is a documentary film released in 2021, directed and produced by Marko Roth. The film explores the concept of "sisu," a Finnish term that roughly translates to "resilience," "grit," or "determination." Sisu is a quintessentially Finnish concept, rooted in the country's long history of surviving harsh winters and enduring challenging conditions.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The film features interviews with a variety of individuals, including athletes, military personnel, business leaders, and others who embody the spirit of sisu. Throughout the documentary, the interviewees share their personal experiences of overcoming obstacles and pushing themselves beyond their perceived limits.
One of the most striking aspects of Sisu is the stunning cinematography. The film is shot in various locations throughout Finland, including forests, lakes, and mountains, and the natural beauty of the country is showcased in all its glory. The film's visuals are accompanied by an evocative score that complements the themes of perseverance and triumph.
Another strength of Sisu is its ability to inspire and motivate viewers. The stories shared by the interviewees are powerful and uplifting, and they serve as a reminder that, with the right mindset and determination, anything is possible. Whether it's a young athlete training for the Olympics or a business leader facing adversity, the film encourages viewers to embrace the concept of sisu and push through their own challenges.
However, despite its strengths, Sisu does have a few shortcomings. One issue is that the film could benefit from more diversity in its interviewees. While the individuals featured in the film are all impressive in their own right, they are largely white and male. It would be interesting to see how individuals from different backgrounds and experiences relate to the concept of sisu.
Additionally, while the film is visually stunning, it occasionally feels overly long. At times, the pacing can drag, and the stories shared by the interviewees can start to feel repetitive. A tighter edit could have made the film more impactful.
Overall, however, Sisu is a thought-provoking and inspiring film that explores an important concept. By showcasing the resilience and determination of individuals from various walks of life, the film encourages viewers to embrace their own inner strength and push beyond their limitations. The stunning cinematography and evocative score add to the film's emotional impact, making it a must-see for anyone in search of inspiration.
Let's take a deeper dive into some of the specific aspects of Sisu that make it such a compelling film.
The Power of Resilience
At its core, Sisu is a film about resilience. The concept of sisu is about pushing through adversity and persevering in the face of challenges. The film showcases individuals who have exemplified this trait in their own lives, whether it's a soldier who has endured the rigors of military training, or an athlete who has overcome injury to compete at the highest level.
The stories shared by the interviewees are truly inspiring, and they serve as a powerful reminder of the strength of the human spirit. One particularly moving segment features a young athlete who has trained for years to compete in the Olympics, only to suffer a devastating injury that puts her dreams in jeopardy. Despite the setback, she refuses to give up, and with the help of her family and friends, she works tirelessly to recover and get back on the path to achieving her goals.
The film also explores the idea that resilience is not just about overcoming challenges, but also about learning from them. Several of the interviewees discuss how they have used setbacks and failures as opportunities for growth, and how they have emerged from these experiences stronger and more determined than ever.
The Beauty of Finland
Another aspect of Sisu that sets it apart is its stunning visuals. The film is shot entirely in Finland, and the natural beauty of the country

Sisu thoughts (Spoilers, duh)
I had no idea what to expect from this going into it, I hadn’t even seen a trailer or even any ads about it. What I did get from it was a WW2 action film that tonally confused me, but had good action and decent characters.
The opening shots of MC dude digging for gold were so artsy, and the semi-pretentious assertion that “sisu” is untranslatable made me think this was going to be a dark, gritty story about how shit the Nazis were, but when the first of them got big fuck-off knife through the temples in one clean strike the tone set by the cinematography didn’t change but the cartoonish action threw a wrench into the works. All of the action just felt so comedic, but at no point did I (or anyone else in the cinema) laugh at it. Indeed, the jokes (I assume there were meant to be a few scattered jokes, they all followed a joke format) no-one really found funny, except for the end when MC goes to the bank and asks for big bank notes in exchange for the gold he was toting.
Come to think of it, given the trafficked women the Nazis were taking and the other war crimes shown it just came off as dissonant. In one shot, you get to see a blown apart horse, complete with broken ribs and entrails, but later in the same scene you get to see a Nazi turned into a fine red mist by a thrown land mine in a very anime-style shot. Baffling.
That scene had an amazing shot though, the image of the Nazis rolling up in their convoy through the mist over MC guy scrabbling to pick up the gold nuggets was beautiful. Very, very imposing, and it really made me appreciate the big screen.
Moving off that though, the Nazis made for good cannon fodder, especially the commander one, and while we didn’t get too much in the way of characterization for the MC guy the quiet, stoic war hero we did get was good as is. The women the Nazis captured had some pretty good moments, despite their lack of screen time, and the scene of them rolling up to the (I assume Finnish) checkpoint was a real sight to behold.
Overall, enjoyable action film, not much else, and the director confuzzled the shit out of me with the weird inconsistencies in tone.
