A hand touched his temple, pressed to turn his face. “Hey, hey, stay with us.” That sounded like a good idea. He wasn’t sure where else to go... But they sounded more distant. The hurt was more distant, more dull. Even that pleasant touch felt more distant. As if it touched the surface of his skin kilometers and kilometers away from where he lay feeling it. Bringing his attention back to them was like digging himself out from a collapsed dune of sand. “…hope so,” Roach was saying. “It’s just, he’s lost a lot of blood.”

So @queerly-autistic's post here got me thinking about another, very different scene that strikes home what a good actor Taika is: when Ed pushes Lucius off the ship.

I remember seeing this for the first time and being overwhelmed with the terror and the sorrow as that switch gets flipped and we see Ed become, for a moment, monstrous. It's as heartbreaking as it is terrifying, that shift from the memory of the silk to the murder of Lucius, and it all happens across Taika's face: the change in expression, the emotionless smile, the sudden burst of violence. It's the first time we see Ed being capable of real cruelty, and it is all the harder because until that point we have seen his kindness and his silliness and his tenderness.

The fact that the viewer can watch this happen and be horrified and heartbroken and also not come away hating Ed is testament to Taika's performance throughout. We know what happened to him.
