Prism: I'm gonna become a book thief. Folio filcher. Parchment pilferer. FCG: A literary larcenist? Prism: Yeah! That's right, when I'm done reading them, I'm gonna set them on fire! Laudna: No, that's an arsonist. Prism: Oh. FCG: Maybe you need to read some more books. Deanna: We got to steal you a thesaurus, baby girl.
— Critical Role C3E64: "Reunited"
Humble suggestions for the Criminal Nerd:
bestiary burglar
codex cracker
compendium cribber
document desperado
grimoire grabber
hardcover heister
leaf lifter
letter looter
library liberator
manuscript moocher
octavo outlaw
page pincher
paper plunderer
paperback purloiner
paragraph picker
scroll snagger
sexto snatcher
spellbook swiper
tome taker
vellum villain
volume varlet
BONUS: anthologist
Some of these would also be formed as *clears throat* exocentric verb-noun compound agent nouns (like "one who picks pockets" is a pickpocket, rather than a "pocket-picker") : liftleaf, lootletter, pinchpage, snagscroll. And these could also be proper nouns, family names (for a certain kind of family, heh) or nicknames or criminal aliases or even tiefling virtue names.

“Can I ask you a question?”
Janet turned to face her semi-regular visitor, an alternative version of her son, and boy, wasn’t that a sentence?
“Different from the ones I’ve been asking, I mean?”
“Oh course, birdie.”
It had been rather awkward for the both of them the first time Janet had instinctively used a pet name that she used for her own Tim, one that his Mother had also used for him.
He had blinked away tears so quickly that if she hadn’t known all versions of her son so dearly she would have thought she had imagined it.
From that point on she made sure to only call him Tim or Birdie, a pet based off his hero identity, (and it still took the breath out of her lungs to think about any version of her baby fighting criminals with nothing but a belt full of tools and a metal staff. Her fear for him was not at all canceled out by her pride). The name deemed safe since her own Tim was a civilian.
Though, even “Tim” got confusing sometimes when trying to differentiate between her son and the son of dead version of herself.
She had asked if it would perhaps be better to call him Jackson and he had frowned at the suggestion, suggesting Alvin or Carl as alternatives instead with a sudden, sly smirk and a snicker when he saw her expression.
He smiled at her now, a soft, gentle thing, that spoke of comfort but his eyes were sad.
“Do you think…” he paused, “Do you think, if things were reversed between our worlds and you had passed, sorry, this is, uh, um a pretty heavy question...”
Tim trailed off, eyes glued to the bare white wall across from him and Janet walked over and sat beside him, not touching, just silently offering support.
“It’s okay, it’s obviously burdening you, let me carry some of the weight. What’s on your mind, Birdie?”
“If it were you that had die-passed, and your Tim had access to trans-dimensional travel, would it… would it make you sad or hurt your feelings if your Tim was to visit my mom?”
Janet paused, thinking it over.
Tim didn’t look at her, allowing her to consider her words carefully.
“A little bit, I think. Not hurt, but sad, because of course my preference would be to be a part of his life. However, even if it would make me a little sad, it would mean the world to me that another Janet was able to open up her arms to my son, that he had found a way to ease his pain, even if just a little bit.”
He smiled at her and it was watery.
“You know, when I come to visit, I take the information you give me and I go though my Mama’s stuff, almost like I’m gathering clues here and putting the pieces together there.”
He paused, trying and failing to not fidget.
“I had no idea, about the Emily Dickinson poem, until you told me and then I went home and she had used that poem in a couple of her poems and social media posts.”
He leaned in to her space.
“It’s nice, getting to learn about her, even now that she’s gone… I appreciate you, you giving me the chance to do so.”
Janet gently bumped shoulders with him, “Of course, Birdie.”
“It also kind of feels weird,” he confessed, “to investigate my own mom like this.”
Janet hummed, and took a chance, “Well, you are two anthropologists’ son, investigating the dead is kind of in your blood.”
Tim choked out a laugh, “Yeah,” he huffed out, voice low and rough but still amused, “guess you’re right.”
He leaned back against the sofa, “She’d love that, I think, being an anthropological revelation.”
“I’d be flattered, certainly.”
Tim snickered at that.
“Do you think your Tim is gonna be an anthologist. Like you and his dad?”
Janet hummed, “Maybe. He enjoys coming out to digs on holidays and summer vacations. But he also enjoys his photography and he keeps making jokes, that I’m not entirely sure are actually jokes about becoming a professional skateboarder.”
Tim snorted in amusement, “Well, I’m rooting for him if he goes for it.”
Janet grinned. “I will too, if that’s his passion in life, though I will expect him to have a backup plan, of course.”
“Of course.” Tim agreed.
“Anything but vigilante!” She shook his shoulder gently, “I already have one of those to worry about!”
He laughed, and he didn’t sound like her own Tim when he laughed.
He sounded like her, or well, she thought, another version of me.

this is so stupid and overthought and pointless but lol it's me sooooo
like I literally got into f1blr through videos of Lando following Carlos and Daniel around and finding them absolutely hilarious and just being their personal squealing little chew toy/satellite. so believe me I LOVE that. and god knows I've written enough about how Lando needed/sometimes still needs to hide behind these big bold alpha personalities.
but I think the ??? that transpired for some of us over the gradual blossoming of Lando's dynamic with Oscar had a lot to do with how much Lando opened up in front of our eyes bc of his new position w Oscar and how that developed. he literally said how much it felt weird for him to imagine himself in the older/more experienced position and you can see in the super early content how much Lando couldn't get a read on Oscar bc there wasn't the usual bromance stuff he's so used to. but Oscar also was so mature and calm that he didn't need Lando to do for him what Carlos and Daniel were for him.
and it seems so stupid but it's almost like Oscar hitting that growth spurt and his voice getting a little deeper sort of clicked things into place for Lando?? bc Oscar had been living alone and cooking for himself and in a serious relationship for years and he didn't need anyone to raise him or protect him like Lando needed as a rookie. and he had lived away from his family or a support system from around 14/15 so he was fully used to finding his way around and navigating new places largely alone.
but him getting taller and broader suddenly fit with his personality so much better. he didn't have his cherub Prema face clashing with how cool and confident he was anymore.
and obv Oscar has always said how much he learned just from observing Lando as one of the fastest guys on the grid, but also Lando has emphasized how much he has learned from Oscar about mentality and staying true to yourself. so again there wasn't any need for Lando to try and be big brother/mother hen.
but!! you know what Lando got to teach Oscar? and what Oscar had trained for years to be the most apt pupil about?
Lando!
bc we never really got to 'learn' Lando as a person before now unless it was on his streams, his content with Max F or his own social media content. his friendships with the other F1 guys are all a variation of bromance since they all love him - but all of them are based on Lando being the introvert among extroverts and bonding over shared activities and interests. not a lot of Lando personality stuff gets revealed around those guys bc he's Just Baby.
but w Oscar Lando came to realize he could roll whatever Mood he was in at him and Oscar would smile and laugh or make feeble resistance and give in anyway - and Oscar took all of it in. he literally already had a fairly encyclopedic Lando knowledge as we well know now but he just ?? never got bored of watching and learning Lando! whether it's Lando's music blaring through the shared wall or Lando not being able to open things or pronounce words or Lando specifically not liking something or not wanting to do something or Lando wanting Oscar to give a different answer or wanting Oscar to agree with him instead - Oscar smiles and patiently files it away.
which is exactly what Max does with Lando. at some point he clearly realized that the best way to get Lando to open up and trust - not unlike an outdoor cat - was to be part anthologist and part nature documentary narrator. Lando only opens up when he knows he has the space to. he gets so genuinely upset at how often the media or fans won't follow his original meaning or look past awkward wording or misuse his original tone. it's why he said he often loves being around people who will lead the conversation and not put pressure on him to talk.
bc for example, Carlos was only joking when he said that Lando needs to mature or how he'd "scold" Lando for being too silly and not paying attention, but to some people it's used as confirmation that Lando's immature. Daniel loved when he'd get Lando to laugh so hard that Lando couldn't do his to-camera work or require millions of takes, but to some people it's seen as Lando not taking anything seriously. it's so easy to take someone as vulnerable and unedited as Lando and slice out one video or one moment and create a false narrative around him. you can see the times when Lando has slunk away from social media and gone a bit mum or dull in his media work when that happens.
but Max and Oscar are there to act as interpreters for the audience at home! Lando drops off to sleep during a Quadrant shoot? Max explains that this is standard procedure wherever he is. Lando is far too hyper for a challenge and won't let Oscar breathe without giving him a hard time? Oscar laughs and gently ribs him back to let people know that it's all in good fun and Lando isn't actually on a tear. Lando winds Max up mercilessly or accidentally reveals that Max has a gf? Max makes sure everyone knows he's joking when he gets "mad" and later on says how much Lando looks out for him. Lando won't let Oscar make his own choices in a silly F1 quiz? Oscar feigns being hard done by but he also says how good Lando's answers are. they do this all the time with him and we see Lando more vocal and more loudly himself with them bc they translate what he can't.
it clearly isn't easy being someone bursting with about fifty different personality traits at once and just as many passionate interests all vying with dyslexia and hyperactivity mixed with introversion and sometimes crippling shyness. it's very easy to love that person - which is why the entire grid does - but it's not easy to understand them or what they need in any given moment.
so I feel like that's what we've gotten out of the Lando/Oscar dynamic that we haven't seen before with Carlos or Daniel. Oscar isn't ever going to be a big personality and he's self-described as "low frequency" - he won't be winding Lando up for fun or bringing energy that makes Lando bounce off the walls. he's also found Lando fascinating almost from his first year moving to the UK. so as fans we love seeing Lando get to have a teammate who loves the business of observing Lando - but we also love getting to see so much more of Lando as a result if that makes sense??

Carpe diem' doesn't mean seize the day--it means something gentler and more sensible.
'Carpe diem' means pluck the day. Carpe, pluck. Seize the day would be "cape diem," if my school Latin servies. No R. Very different piece of advice. What Horace had in mind was that you should gently pull on the day's stem, as if it were, say, a wildflower or an olive, holding it with all the practiced care of your thumb and the side of your finger, which knows how to not crush easily crushed things--so that the day's stalk or stem undergoes increasing tension and draws to a thinness, and a tightness, and then snaps softly away at its weakest point, perhaps leaking a little milky sap, and the flower, or the fruit, is released in your hand. Pluck the cranberry or blueberry of the day tenderly free without damaging it, is what Horace meant--pick the day, harvest the day, reap the day, mow the day, forage the day. Don't freaking grab the day in your fist like a burger at a fairground and take a big chomping bite out of it. That's not the kind of man that Horace was.

Some Dome Octarian Society Headcanons
Honestly we only see the military side of the dome dwelling Octarians and it really makes me wonder what their society must be like.
We really don’t see much about what life is like outside of just stuff about the army and I wanted to base this off the fact that nobody is in the wrong and that “everyone is just doing their own thing”.
The most valued occupations are STEM careers, especially those who work in engineering and technology.
Militants and medical professionals are a close second followed by musicians, composers, and artists, most of whom receive support from the government to create music and art for them (ex; Turquoise October making Octotronica and the propaganda we see in the sunken scrolls)
Most octarians are pushed to and do chose their careers from a very young age. After or during their equivalent to middle/secondary school octarians usually do internship style programs instead of a traditional schooling, thus why there are so many child soldiers.
All schools are funded by the government and so they are where a lot of propaganda and nationalism are instilled in people.
Marina is a special case and was able to skip most/all of the required schooling and go straight to an internship program due to her intelligence.
Many of the octarians who live in the domes as of around ME2022 have chosen to be there for one reason or another. For example, while some octarians are still conditioned to be loyal to the army, some have genuine loyalties to Octavio, some are pressured by tradition or a feeling of obligation, and some people just don’t want to leave because they have lives there. Nevertheless, post ME2018 the Octarian domes have many fewer inhabitants than usual.
Lots of their infrastructure is built off of the skeletons of the formerly flooded old human dome cities which have been built upon almost beyond recognition.
Octarian anthologists know a lot more about about human society due to this and they became so advanced due to the fact that they could somewhat build off already existing technology. This is why the Sunken Scrolls contain so much information about the Splatoon universe pre mollusk era- they’re written by the octarians.
Biological family is not something with a big focus, especially when many of the members of society have been created through asexual reproduction. They raise kids with a “it takes a village to raise a child” mindset.
Although there are special cases where children will be raised by one specific person or multiple people, they aren’t necessarily the kids biological parent(s)
Later on in life this applies to the group that someone chooses to work with, as they usually have to live and work in close proximity to each other and form strong familial friendships with one another.
Blackouts are a regular occurrence and most of the population keeps a lot of candles at hand for emergencies. It’s very difficult to create renewable energy due to the fact that things like sun, wind, and weather have to be artificially created.
This is due to the amount of electricity that is presumably used on Octavio’s weapons. And also raves. Like chill out dude.
But I digress. Due to that, power eggs are some of the only sustainable and reliable energy sources which is why keeping good relations with the Salomonids is absolutely essential.
Due to their close relation, a good chunk of the population knows the salmonid language or have at least heard terms in it before. It’s not the majority of course but it’s more than you’d expect, especially considering that not many will actually ever interact with them.
I think that styles based off of poppy/preppy ME2017 inkling fashion are very popular with rebellious teenagers.
That’s all I have right now. Maybe I’ll come up with more in the future and also maybe I won’t.
