"The Homesman" review - SPOILERS

I think Tommy Lee Jones said, in one of "The Homesman" panels at a film festival, that this movie is better appreciated with multiple viewings

And I have to agree with it.

For me is the journey of Mary Bee Cuddy and her final choice. The first time I saw the movie; I was kinda mad and turn off by it. Why would she decide to do that? She was a woman ahead of her time, strong and capable, independent with strong morals, assertive and empathetic. Why? But, in a way, that's really the question of the movie, how much does it take for you to break?

This is a hard movie to watch at times, but I think that is the first (correct me if I’m wrong) that actually focus on how women were treated in the Nebraska, 1854.

Usually when we think of Women in Westerns, the idea that pops to my mind is "little house on the prairie" or "Calamity Jane". I have a feeling that what happened to these 3 women and Mary Bee are closer to the reality of what women went through during those days, especially in the hard conditions they lived in.

For that alone, this is a movie I would recommend watching (just keep in mind that the movie doesn't shy away to show the harsh conditions these women lived in and the impact on their mental health)

The movie is call “The Homesman” and Tommy Lee Jones is first billed, making him, at first, the main character of the movie, even if he just shows up at the end of the first act and closes it before the ending credits, but this is really the journey of Mary Bee and her battle with the cards that life gave her to deal with.

When we first see Mary Bee, she's an independent, self sustained woman, with strong morals. Through the movie, we see that she's also has empathy, she cares for these women, in the way their madness brought her to tears, the way she baths them, and (one of my favorite moments) the way she tries to connect and understand Grace Gummer's character.

But behind the strong personality and morals, and the caring person, there is also a very lonely person that craves to be loved.

And we can see from early on the affect the conditions these pioneers lived also had on this strong woman. With all her independence, and strong will, Mary Bee longs for love and companionship, she feel alone and misses her old life in a more civilized society.

There are a few scenes during the movie that hint at this, starting at the very beginning during the dinner with Giffen, when she proposes to him (unthinkable in 1800s), not because she loved him, but because it would make sense to join their properties and to have a companion. Something we see her doing again later with Briggs.

More than once we witness Mary Bee needs for having a companion, to be loved, and being denied again and again.

First by man, my reasoning here is they felt threatened by a woman that not only could walk shoulder by shoulder, but even walk ahead of them. A woman they would not have any control over, particularly when we look at the other 3 women married life. And, in a lesser degree, a woman, that’s over 30 years old, was probably considered too old, during that time.

And second by God. When she stays behind to repair a child grave and praying for them, she feverish asks to be loved, in a moment, right before where, I think, things start too shattered for her. After her prayer, she has probably the worse hours of her life, the despair and the humiliation of having to be on her knees sharing dry grass with her horse next to her, feeling betrayal by her travel companion.

We also gets a glimpse how the hard living is affecting her and the cracks on the strong persona. The fake music playing for Giffen, her words both to the reverent and the man that builds the carriage for the journey.

Now, many viewers seem to see the reason for her choice and the trigger that leads her to it is the scene that happens during the previews night, myself included after my first viewing. And it bothered me, because I didn’t felt it was in character.

But on second viewing, I realize that her decision was made even before that night (in fact, I think that what happens is because she already made her choice and wanted to know/experience that connection before she end it all), and, to me, she sealed her fate by the river when she again search comfort in music.

Like those 3 woman, Mary Bee was also affected by the harsh conditions, from the beginning of the movie, there were already cracks in her strong personality, and seeing what these woman have become, the events of when she’s lost, and others along the journey, including the fate of her horse, her losing faith that she would ever find a companion to walk next to her in life, the lack of music, all add up to her breaking point.

There must be also a symbolism in the fact that when she’s completely shattered, she finds refuge in the same coach they use to secure the 3 woman that were already broken to the point of madness.

This is a movie about women, mental health, and how much can one take before they break?

The acting is superb all around, there are 5 movies that I think Hilary should have got a academy nod, 2 she got her Oscar, “Conviction” was another that I think she should have got at least a nod, the 4th one is this movie. Her performance really solidifies the movie.

This is not a movie that will drive the viewer to watch it multiple times, and the fact that the point of view is very women centered will push away some of the male audience, but, like Tommy Lee Jones said, it really gets a bigger appreciation with subsequent views.

I liked the part with the roast pig(s).

Harsh, brutal, and unrelenting. The Homesman presents a traditionally structured western story with some interestingly untraditional characters and perspectives.

Hilary Swank gave an excellent performance, portraying a sympathetic character with a tragic arc. It really took me out of things every time a character referred to her as "plain", because she's anything but. Tommy Lee Jones was pretty great too; Though his character was more typical for the genre, he did a good job conveying a man with inner conflict and depth.

I really did not expect the POV change that took place about two-thirds of the way in, and I definitely have mixed feelings about it. On the one hand, the last third of the movie worked well and contained some of the best scenes in the movie, but it also significantly reduced the focus on the hardships of frontier women that had made the story compelling in the first place.

The Marco Beltrami score was pretty good; Subdued and sparing used, but very well fit to the tone of the material. Likewise, the cinematography conveyed a good sense of wide, oppressive emptiness that suited the script and setting.

Just like with Charlie's Angels (2019), I saw Hailee Steinfeld listed on the letterboxd page then forgot about it, before being surprised when she showed up right at the end to barely be in the movie at all. Not that this has any real relevance to my review, I just thought it was weird it's happened twice now.

A grim but fascinating story. Very good.
