i think we need to talk about this unit thematically

i know it's "haha april fool's day, they're stuck in a futuristic city and rui wants to study the silly sekai aliens" but like... hear me out

im pretty sure these 4 were picked because they all have one major thing in common— the fact that they were failed by society.

kaito v1 was a commercial failure on release, to the point where other vocal synth companies looked at his low sales and consequently made less male vocal synths— leading to the large gender gap in vocal synths that we still have today (although its less than what it was ~5 yrs ago imo). i think clpl actually considered this when picking kaito for this unit solely because it's vbs kaito— the kaito that most strongly resembles old fanon kaito in how he can easily be described as a carefree dumbass that loves icecream.

rui was ostracized his whole life for being "dangerous" with his shows by his classmates, as well as being isolated because of how he was "different" from the other kids (implied neurodivergent). this lead to rui struggling with depression as well as a myriad of other issues (such as his abandonment issues) later on.

akito was ALSO ostracized for being too serious about his passions and having a "bad attitude", which lead to him developing an inferiority complex as well as leading to him essentially being overly polite to strangers because of his past trauma where he was publicly humiliated, had his reputation ruined, and brought disgrace to a place he loved just for accidentally spilling water on someone 💀 (find a way out is so real) ((also i choose to see akito as neurodivergent mainly because of how his behavior is framed idk i feel like him being overly polite is him masking, esp. when u compare his behavior between different people.. recent example: how he acts around rui vs how he acts around mafuyu for example)) (((also, he's rui's narrative foil, so it just makes a lot of sense???)))

and then there's haruka, who was so close to being the "perfect" idol but couldn't because of her trauma from hurting mai— she was unable to meet the expectations of being an idol under the pressure of probably not only her managers but also the large fanbase she always wanted to give hope to

For five ask game: au where Izuku's quirk is the ability to regenerate organs, but only organs. He only finds this out after interacting with All Might, since he had never met anyone before then who had lost any

1- despite what Izuku thinks, All Might isn't the first person he's used his quirk on- he once regrew the appendix of a woman on a train who'd had an appendectomy, and he's accidentally regrown the tonsils of another people. He has absolutely no idea, and neither do they- its just a surprise seven years later to find out somehow, your appendix was not as removed as you thought.

2- Izuku's quirk activation requirements are two and simple for single organs- he has to have physical contact, and he has to want to help. He'd brushed the hand of the woman with the appendectomy when he'd given her his seat on the train, he'd regrown the tonsils of a classmate he was pulling away from bullying. There is a drawback though- Izuku experiences the physical pain. He thought it was random cramping or from said bullying injuries.

3- So, it isn't too hard to meet the requirements for Toshinori- but unlike the others, there's a lot of organs missing there, and it is very noticeable when that changes. Toshinori stumbles, wheezing, and Izuku drops from sudden pain. Toshinori manages get them pulled away from the open beach, unsure if it's a villain's quirk attacking or what, and to call someone on his phone, and a very uncomfortable half-hour later they're in an ambulance headed for the school and Recovery Girl.

4- RG is equally shocked to see what's going on- she insists on looking both of them over. She concludes there's definitely a quirk at play here, but neither remember seeing anyone else on the beach, so while she tells Nedzu to look in the registry, she also has Aizawa come up to erase both of them. When he turns erasure on Izuku, the kid suddenly isn't in any pain anymore, and Toshinori's organs stop fixing themselvse, so he is. Izuku quickly tells him to stop, and when Aizawa asks what his quirk is, Izuku says he doesn't have one.

"No," Aizawa says very slowly. "You do." but Izuku then insists whatever, help All- ah, help his friend. Aizawa has to blink sometime anyway, so he does, and then quickly escapes the room without answering izuku's question of 'wait, are you eraserhead?'

5- the good news is that as Toshinori's organs finally finish regrowing, Izuku's pain stops. Toshinori's goes back now though because ah, he's going to need some further assistance to actually put everything in a usable place, but he insists he'll be fine, and tells Izuku to keep training for the week he'll be treated, since he can't wait to see the progress his miracle of a successor makes, and he's curious how many kinda zany ideas the kid will have about his own quirk to ramble about after too. Walking him out, RG gives him a card with her number on it too, since he's sure to be getitng himself in trouble in the future as well. It's such a cool piece of kinda hero merch, izuku almost isn't even sad about missing All Might for a day. (but definitely does the rest of the week.)

rewatching the kyoto goodwill event simply bc i missed him badly 😓 and i got to the ep where we get his backstory and when i tell you i GASPED.

so when it switches to older him having that conversation with whoever that woman is, he asks why the kamo clan took him in and she says bc his father’s ACTUAL wife (cuz yk toshi’s mom was just a concubine) gave birth to a child that didn’t have a technique.

personally i believe this child is older than noritoshi by at least a year for 1) the narrative and 2) the amount of sense it makes??? techniques usually kick in around 5-6 y/o and there’s no exact date for when it happens. could happen when you turn 5 or your last day as 6. so they could’ve most likely waited to be sure, but i feel like they already knew…

(unsure if kid straight up had no curse energy or simply didn’t have an innate technique; either way i don’t think it mattered to the clan)

but this kid doesn’t have the technique and toshi is brought in as the new heir. when i tell you the ideas started FLOWING. little noritoshi wanting to get along with his older sibling because they were family, but doesn’t realize his entire existence is an insult to this child. an insult to everything they knew at this point. THEY should be the heir, not serving tea to some bastard child who got lucky.

this is like the opposite of that no quirk au...

1- ok, so you need to have your own pre-existing plus alpha factor in order to activate any quirk in your body. Have no plus alpha factor or no quirk? Quirkless, you need both in order to actually manifest a power. Some quirkless people do actually have quirks, but no factors to activate, and some vice versa. One For All quirk works like a car, but doesn't come with the key to activate. Toshinori had a key, and also a second, secret car that protected him all along from dying of having two cars, or getting his limbs blown off by the new car. The metaphors getting away from me.

2- Izuku, however, has no plus alpha factor because i know thats what you wanted out of this prompt. (he has a quirk- his hair is a visual indicator of this, but alas, no key.) Which means, he's going to be unable to actually use OfA once he has it.

3- but since his New Quirk Car is Totally Haunted and full of Secret Smaller Cars... i mean, does the can-do-anything quirk from Toshi mean OfA would let Izuku do anyhing if he thinks he can? No, since Izuku can't turn on the can-do-anything quirk to let that happen. hm. BUT, but, Toshinori does have a key, and Izuku's got part of his genes now, so can Izuku do anything Toshinori believes he can, just not anything Izuku thinks he can? I mean that'd probably just open more doors for izuku since his own self worth wouldn't hold him back. So actually what's going to happen is related to how Toshinori can feel his vestige self, but only when in contact with Izuku- Izuku can do anything Toshinori thinks he can, as long as Toshinori is physically touching him.

4- so..... that entrance exam is going to be frustrating. OfA just doesn't activate. Uraraka is injured by the zero pointer, but RG heals her up. Izuku goes home and after several hours of sheer dread, eventually musters the courage to tell All Might he needs to meet him at the beach, intending to give OfA back. All Might arrives, and tells Izuku that he is the right choice, still. He only had a few hours with the Quirk in his system, and only fifteen minutes to figure out activation, so All Might is fully ready to blame his own teaching on it. They try a few times to activate it on the beach that night, and nothing works. Toshinori puts his hand on Izuku's shoulder and says it's alright, they can try more later, but Izuku wants one more shot - and shatters his arm in the process.

5- he hardly feels the pain, overjoyed it worked even if All Might has to rush him to RG for more healing and a very irritated lecture about the hour. Still, they're in good spirits when they meet the next day for training, not at the beach (too popular now) but a room in Might Tower. And yet... Izuku can't do a repeat. Toshinori suspects he still needs more muscle mass and his body is instinctively preventing activation to avoid injury. He begrudgingly gets Gran's help, and everyone's trying to figure out what the pattern is. Gran bullies Toshi into asking Nedzu for help, which he does after an apology for resigning before the school year even started. But Nedzu likes puzzles, and he eventually suspects the reason, but isn't sure why physical contact is enough to override it, and if that will continue to work once Toshi burns through his share of OfA (or dies). He does, however, have an idea- would a support item with Toshi's DNA be able to replicate the effect? What good luck that UA has a hero student and a support student who can help- Mirio Togata and Bibimi Kenranzaki! (Izuku doesn't know why All Might looks so nervous at the suggestion that they meet to ask for help...)

might tower was built some 8 or so years into toshinori's employment as a professional hero. it's 86 floors including the penthouse, and houses just about anything you could think you'd need on a day to day basis working for the big man — including multiple cafeterias, roomy offices, an entire event center, and a whole floor dedicated to being a pretty well stocked "break room", even including a gym and spa. he likes to take good care of his employees, as he can only imagine how stressful it'd be to work under japan's number one hero, the world's symbol of peace. and seeing that there's a lot of them, he does his best to accommodate them all, as briefly stated in this hc post. a good chunk of the tower is also open to the public. aside from a few unauthorized areas throughout the floors, like the offices and conference rooms, but even those can be authorized through a supervised tour. the exception to this, however, is behind the MIGHT GATE on floors 82 through 86.

the might lobby begins on the 82nd floor and is mainly comprised of an open, 3 story foyer used to house and display awards and gifts he's received over the years — like the 20ft bronze all might statue we've seen in the comics. there's also an information desk where people can ask for directions and schedule tours, as well as all might's landing pad — a designated, roped off area where he can safely land after returning from his hero work. immediately beyond the might gate is all might's office. it's big, and rather empty — probably pretty underwhelming to most who've had the pleasure of seeing it. it's comprised of a grand desk, surprisingly void of any paperwork, a couple of large portraits that he received from a fan quite some years ago, and a few plants to help fill the area. in case the immaculate condition of the place wasn't enough of a hint, his office is hardly ever used. up until the more recent years, he's had staff to take care of all of his back office work. so it's treated more like a glorified foyer to his LIVING QUARTERS located through another oversized set of doors. toshinori didn't always live in the tower, but as work piled up and days grew longer, he found himself spending more time commuting to and from work than he was able to spend at home. so it didn't take long for it to become his permanent residence. to some, all might's living quarters would probably be considered just as underwhelming as his office. it's an even LARGER space, with even more areas void of any sort of personality or life, but it has everything he'd need to live comfortably enough — a rather large kitchen, a master suite, a private gym...it even has what some would consider to be a pretty impressive sort-of theater for a living room, as one of yagi's favorite things to do is watch movies. to an outsider, the way everything is placed and laid out, the apartment as a whole may sort of seem like...an afterthought. perhaps because he wasn't planning on living there full time as he was, that it was something that he just accepted to be at some point and made do with what he had. the apartment's also never considered showroom ready, as most people would probably think. toshinori doesn't have any staff taking care of his quarters, as he quite enjoys his privacy beyond the gate. so he's fairly decent at picking up after himself and cleaning up his own messes — but seeing as he's practically NEVER expecting company, the bed's not gonna be made and you'll need to watch your step for stray house shoes when walking around.
