The year is 2004, and 15 year old me pops in JDM Insider 2 for the 1st time. One car immediately catches my eyes, the Night Walkers Verossa driven by Tomokazu Hirota. I loved how wild the car looked and how crazy Hirota drove it & I knew I had to have one. Flash forward 19 years later, and I spotted this beautiful Pearl Blue Metallic JZX110 Verossa from FAC (Freee's Auto Customes), and I HAD to have it. Similar to my old S2000, I had no idea this was an OEM color. I then learned that only 19 were ever made!!! With only 1200 turbos produced and 350 5sp, this is a gem!

I've been a Schassis man my entire life, but the opportunity to have this car was too golden not to miss out. I contacted the dealer and did the entire deal myself. It was scary, yes, but I went through with it from all the good feedback I received from people who have worked with FAC. I can not praise them enough for their excellent customer service and openness about any questions I had. I finally own my dream car!

This upcoming spring, I'm traveling to Japan with my wife Sarah and my Mom to see it in person and to do a long overdue tour of Japan. Selling the 180sx was sad, and I love that car, but I had to make this happen. I can't wait to visit my friends in Japan after being away for over a decade! Tokyo, Kyoto, & Osaka/Kansai, here we come in 2024!

Bueno, ahí reside la belleza de la ingeniería japonesa. Siempre me sorprende cómo logran empacar tal cantidad de potencia y eficiencia en un paquete comparativamente pequeño. Para empezar, echemos un vistazo a uno de mis favoritos, el Honda S2000. Potente y venerado por los entusiastas, esta joya de máquina consta de un bloque de motor que literalmente HA "campeado". Aunque sea un poco antiguo, el S2000 se destacó por tener uno de los motores atmosféricos de cuatro cilindros más potentes del mundo. Además, su apretado cambio de marchas manuales, una verdadera delicia para los puristas. Ahora hablando de puristas, ¿qué me dices del Toyota GT86/Scion FR-S/Subaru BRZ? Estos gemelos (o trillizos) lucen el mismo motor de cuatro cilindros boxeador, que a menudo es objeto de críticas por su falta de potencia y carácter. Yo digo, ¡déjale la potencia a la imaginación! El verdadero encanto de estos coches reside en su excelente equilibrio y maniobrabilidad, no importa la potencia del motor. Pasando a algo más moderno, tenemos el Audi TT RS. Un rey en su propia liga, este coche Japonés representa la maldita paradoja de un motor 4 cilindros; hecho en Japón, con la sangre alemana, es fruto de la colaboración entre ingenieros de ambas nacionalidades. Su motor turboalimentado de 2,5L ha sido votado varias veces como el mejor motor de 5 cilindros en el mundo y genera una potencia asombrosa de 400 caballos de fuerza. No es de extrañar que tenga tal reconocimiento. Ahora, vamos a tocar un tema candente. Sé que muchos no estarán de acuerdo conmigo aquí, pero en mi opinion, el Subaru WRX STI hizo más daño que bien al entrar en el territorio de 4 cilindros. A pesar de la gracia salvadora del par motor y la legendaria tracción total, el empujón turbo se siente artificial y falta del refinamiento que otros coches en esta lista poseen. Así que ahí está, una oda a los motores de 4 cilindros en los coches deportivos japoneses que tan a menudo son menospreciados. Que estos ejemplos sirvan como recordatorio constante de la maravillosa ingeniería que la tierra del sol naciente ha producido. ¿Pero qué piensas tú? ¿Qué cuatro cilindros más te gusta?
