What’s the point in growing upWhen each day you give less of a fuckMeditate they sayIt’ll take the pain away while you suffocate (I’d rather medicate)
Now I’m trying my best to translateThe emotional cocktail pouring out of my brainAnd I’m trying my best to keep it at bayPut it on the shelf for a rainy dayBut I can’tAnd it feeds my anxietyTakes the best of meHoovers up…

Manchester based singer songwriter Abbie Ozard brings us some subtle whiffs of The Cure meets The Smiths on her retro tinged, synth peppy indie pop/guitar pop gem, Growing Pains. It’s a delightfully glistering introduction to the musician, who only has two official releases under her belt so far. With them, she’s caught the attention of Blossoms, BBC Radio 1′s Huw Stephens, and made notable festival appearances, including at Manchester’s Neighbourhood Festival. Mellifluous guitars, contagious hand claps, and her saccharine voice lure us into the lambent twirling song. Abbie Ozard, who also took influence from a range of moderns such as Snail Mail and Fenne Lily, explains of Growing Pains: “The song talks about a young persons perception of love and the confusion that comes with it. I wanted to write a song that makes teenagers feel less isolated when falling in and out of love and struggling with identity and acceptance. A challenge that i’ve had to go through myself and one which i’m sure many others have to or are yet to go through.” For an earlier release from Abbie Ozard, listen to contemplative meandering Gone below. A full debut EP will arrive later this year. Abbie Ozard will be playing her second headline show at Aatma in Manchester on April 18th. Growing Pains can also be found on Spotify, here.

Abbie Ozard announces new EP Water Based Lullabies; shares dizzy lead single ‘Pisces’
Manchester’s Abbie Ozard announces new EP Water Based Lullabies for July 1 via House Anxiety (Bad Boy Chiller Crew, Genesis Owusu, Carpetgarden; formerly King Krule, Courtney Barnett, Vagabon). Lead single ‘Pisces’ is out today.
‘Pisces’ is a woozy anthem for the fanciful - a wobbly indie-pop put-down concerning zodiac culture-clash. Delivered with pastel insouciance by Abbie, it’s an apt emblem for the aquatic theme of the upcoming Water Based Lullabies EP. The track showcases the lighter side of the EP’s sentiments - which overall touches on growth, family, and introspection.
Talking about the song, Abbie says: “After releasing songs about yearning, loss and change I was set on creating a bad bitch anthem that girls, gays, theys and everyone inbetween could feel empowered by. ‘Pisces’ is about recognising your own strengths, taking control of what you really want and setting your standards high. This song was so fun to write, me and James were in stitches when we were writing it but behind the humour there’s a deeper meaning to it all. Don’t settle for mediocrity, know your worth and surround yourself with people that make you feel amazing.”
