It’s one in the morning let’s talk Six of Crows analysis - it feels like it’s been ages since I did any analysis, which is like the entire point of this account so sorry about that but here we go: We should talk more about Adem Bajan you guys okay because first of all he effectively comes to represent the vast majority of everyday people in a clear juxtaposition to both Inej and Van Eck, but he also is in a position of far less choice than I think we give him credit for.

As a reminder, Bajan is a young Suli boy (presumably somewhere around 19 but we have no confirmation of that) working in the Van Eck household teaching Alys music. He is highly implied to be having or to have interest in having as affair with Alys, and was Van Eck’s chosen jailer for Inej at the beginning of Crooked Kingdom. Van Eck claims he made this choice because he thought “a Suli boy would be most conspicuous” when he was attempting to lure Kaz into a trap to save Inej, but it was also an inarguably smart decision in that, as Inej even comments herself, Bajan was easy to talk to, made her feel nostalgic, homesick, and alone, and very nearly succeeded in drawing information out of her without having to restore to torture. If anything, resorting to torture was Van Eck’s major mistake at this point but that’s really a conversation for another time. Bajan is a really interesting character because he doesn’t want to hurt Inej and specifically encourages her to tell him things so Van Eck won’t escalate things further, but when Van Eck does escalate things Bajan is unable - or possibly unwilling - to stop him. For this Inej calls him a monster, and when he claims he did nothing replies “no, you’re the man who stands idly by congratulating himself whilst the monster eats its fill”. She draws a Suli phrase on him that effectively means he’ll be rejected by the community forever and his spirit/soul won’t be accepted, and she describes it as the worst fate or something along those lines sorry I can’t remember exactly. But what’s the most interesting thing is that even though he claims not to believe in any of it Bajan gets noticeably upset by this and says “that’s not fair”. Inej is surprised that he’s this soft, and there’s a very clear juxtaposition between the lives they have lived.

BUT - let’s look at this from Bajan’s perspective. And remember - this is important - Bajan is not described as an employee of Van Eck’s, but an indenture. An indenture. So Bajan is a young boy indentured in a foreign country to a man as high up in the country’s government as you can get and who has clearly been illustrated to the reader as a terrible person on several different levels that I won’t dissect in too much detail right now. He appears to have acclimatised himself to Kerch surroundings and acts with elevation above his status, because that’s what he has to do to survive in the upper echelon of a deeply classist society that actively diminishes and disapproves of his culture. (<<if anyone wants references for that let me know and also I’ve written about it quite a bit before so that’s kicking around on my page somewhere) He refuses to speak to Inej in Suli because “it makes me maudlin” and my question to you is: is he rejecting the language to further attempt to fit in and as a product of internalised prejudice, or because it’s so incredibly painful to be half-connected to a culture not only that he has forced himself to reject but also that he feels he can never safely return to? Probably both. He tells Inej he doesn’t believe in Suli superstition, religion, or culture, and yet is deeply upset when she uses it against him. Is this because he actually does believe, or wants to believe, in the Saints and the Suli interpretation of them but has rejected them for survival and the supposed betterment of himself? Possibly.

Bajan strikes me as very similar to Jesper in the way he presents himself as free, flirty, and casual, but had a considerable weight to almost everything he says and considerable pain hidden closer to the surface than he may have realised. I think there are parallels between him and Inej if we want to see them, but also a very stark difference in the way Kerch and Ketterdam have treated them. Bajan may not be privileged but even as an indenture he has - or at least as far as we know has had - a far safer and kinder experience than Inej has. This could be related to gender since the hyper-sexualisation of Suli culture is mostly centred on women - “the Menagerie always stocked a Suli girl” (I’ve intensely analysis this quote before so I won’t now but ugh there’s so much to say) - but we do know there are young boys captive at the pleasure houses as well although less commonly and it’s also possible that this difference is linked to Bajan’s decision to turn his back on Suli culture in order to appeal more to Kerch society whilst Inej continually embraced her culture and arguably became more religious in response to her experiences.

This is complicated because I’m not entirely sure how I feel about Bajan. I understand and support Inej’s perspective and everything she saw whilst in a far more dangerous position that he was, but is it possible that this was a lonely boy who saw someone he thought was like him and tried to communicate with her the only way he thought was safe? You are completely isolated in a foreign culture and hate yourself for having suppressed your own upbringing in order to survive, but now you meet someone else who yes, is in more danger than you, but who you might be able to help so that she can help you in return. You aren’t safe to speak freely and so you subtly tell her that you are an indenture, hoping she acknowledges that none of this is of your free will and because you know that she was indentured too (and remember from a societal pov there is very little understanding of what indentured girls at the pleasure houses actually go through and although that doesn’t excuse ignoring Inej’s trauma it may explain why he doesn’t fully acknowledge that their positions aren’t equal), you tell her that speaking your own shared language makes you feel maudlin, hoping she realises that you desperately miss your homeland and using your language makes you feel even further from your family than you already are because you can’t share it with them. She doesn’t seem to be taking any of it in, your employer has every intention of hurting her and you don’t know what else to do, so you make a last plea: you ask her about home. You think you’ve already made it clear that speaking about home is painful, so you ask her about it to invite that pain, to share it, so you both understand. But it fails, because she only sees your employer puppeteering you. You openly beg her to tell him the truth so that he won’t hurt her but she refuses to comply, and after all of your efforts and your desperate attempts to connect and beg her to help you both go home, her response is to turn your home against you and banish you from it for eternity. So when you see her the next morning, how could you possibly look her in the eye?

Bajan did not make all of the right choices in his brief time on the page. He didn’t. But maybe he was trying really hard, and he had no other options left.

Anyway I’m not saying this is definitive one way or the other it’s just an interpretation but I find him a very interesting and very sad character and I although I support all of Inej’s actions in these scenes from her point of view I do find myself wondering how she appeared to Bajan and how he felt in the aftermath.

If Inej were the “main lead”, why does Leigh’s acknowledgement at the end of SoC specially call out Kaz as the protagonist + say they (Leigh and kaz) limped along the road together. Why does the back descriptions of both CK and SoC only mention kaz by name. Why does Kaz’s name appear 1112 times in CK and 1139 in SoC via inej’s 660 in CK and 622 in SoC. She gets more pov chapters but a lot of are also focused on kaz (kaz breaker didn’t need a reason is literally her first line) and kaz’s pov is often hidden for reveals too. The stories revolve around him so much more than inej as he’s the leader, assembles the team, has 4+ narrative foils, etc. Leigh even said she came up with SoC because she envisioned a character named “dirty hands”. idk why you’d think it’s disrespectful that people recognize kaz is given far more weight than the other 5 crows in SoC duology. Also audience surrogate isn’t the same as main character.

So. This was an unnecessarily aggressive ask. You could have just ignored my fairly lighthearted post and moved on with your life. But to answer your questions and elaborate on why I think Inej is pretty clearly the 'main lead' of the SoC ensemble cast:

Kaz is called out as a protagonist because he is one. The duology has six co-protagonists; all of the Crows share that status. That's why the book is called Six of Crows, because it's an ensemble cast. And Leigh called him out because she self-admittedly poured a lot of herself into Kaz, particularly his perspective on and handling of his physical disability.

The back descriptions call out Kaz because he's the "leader" of the Crows and it's a heist plot; the marketing team is trying to sell the books by appealing to existing fans of heist plots like Ocean's 11 and Lies of Locke Lamora. However, the book's marketing has no actual impact, necessarily, on how much weight is given to any one particular perspective or story throughout the actual narrative relative to the other Crows. That's not a Leigh Bardugo decision; that's a MacMillan Marketing Team decision.

Likewise, how often a character's name is mentioned does not necessarily reflect their presence or narrative impact in a story. For example, Inej's name is only sparingly mentioned in the first nine chapters of Crooked Kingdom despite Inej getting two POVs and that entire subplot completely revolving around her, largely because Kaz is lashing out at the rest of them whenever she's mentioned. Inej is also referred to as "Wraith" on multiple occasions instead of her name, while Kaz is rarely only referred to as Dirtyhands in place of his name; usually the story will refer to him as both in the same sentence, upping the name mention numbers. Inej has less name mentions largely because she talks less, not because she's treated as a "less important" character. The two Pekka chapters at the end of each book also up Kaz's name mentions and several characters full name Kaz a lot; it's an interesting quirk of the story.

Also, if "how many times a character's name is said" indicates character importance, Nina would be seen as the secondary principal Crow in SOC and Jesper in CK, as their name mentions come secondary to Kaz in both books. Unfortunately for both Nina and Jesper, I don't think anyone would particularly argue for either one. Name mention numbers don't mean anything on their own because again, largely they indicate which characters talk the most and not which characters are given the most narrative importance.

Inej also has 5 narrative foils (Kaz, Nina, Matthias, Adem Bajan, and Dunyasha) and 3 major antagonists (Heleen, Dunyasha, and Van Eck) throughout the duology, the same number as Kaz, so I'm not sure why that's supposed to be particularly compelling evidence that Kaz is the "main" character. If anything, that's indicative of Kaz and Inej getting equal narrative status.

Inej gets the most POV chapters AND the most page time in both books:

Inej is our POV character for 22.6% of the duology. Kaz is second with 18.2%. And even though Kaz is the first Crow to be mentioned (first page of Ch. 2), Inej is the first Crow to actually appear (also the first page of Ch. 2). She gets both the first and last 'main' POV chapter (Ch. 2 of SOC and Ch. 44 of CK) and is also the last Crow to physically appear (in Pekka's epilogue chapter).

Sure. Kaz is the leader and the orchestrator of the heist and auction plots. But the narrative puts much more emphasis on Inej's thoughts, actions, wants, and desires than it does Kaz's. She gets more and longer chapters. We spend much more time in her head, examining her understanding of the world around her and her relationships to the other major characters. And if it comes down to a choice of choosing Kaz or Inej as the duology's "main" lead? Inej is the primary instigator of quite a lot of Kaz's character development but Kaz is not the primary instigator of Inej's; while Kaz is a significant factor in her journey, her development is much more linked to her own trauma, her desire to reunite with her family, and her desire to end the slave trade. His story revolves a lot more around her than hers does around him.

She is also the one to narrate the first main chapter (SOC Ch. 2) and the last main chapter (CK Ch. 44): the books open and close with her story. The parley exchange is a flash-bang introduction to each one of the core Dregs trio with an emphasis on Kaz, but it's still Inej's story that we get first:

She’d joined up with the Dregs less than two years ago, just days after her fifteenth birthday. It had been a matter of survival, but it gratified her to know that, in such a short time, she’d become someone to take precautions against. Though, if the Black Tips thought tricks like this would keep the Wraith from her goal, they were sadly mistaken. ..................... The thought rattled noisily around in Inej’s head. If Kaz was gone, would I stay? Or would I skip out on my debt? Take my chances with Per Haskell’s enforcers? If she didn't move faster, she might well find out.

We see Kaz through her eyes because that chapter revolves around introducing what Kaz is to her: someone she cares about, someone she stays in Ketterdam for, someone who infuriates her, someone who saved her.

And the final main chapter of Crooked Kingdom, likewise, ends with Inej and her story. Her boat, her mission, her boy, her future, and her parents:

Had she really thought the world didn’t change? She was a fool. The world was made of miracles, unexpected earthquakes, storms that came from nowhere and might reshape a continent. The boy beside her. The future before her. Anything was possible.

Ultimately I think you misunderstood what I was trying to say. The point I was trying to make is that while the heist (and thus everyone's primary motivation for going on the job in the first place) revolves around Kaz, the story often revolves around Inej: her thoughts and reactions to what happens, everyone else's relationship to her, her decisions regarding her backstory and trauma (it's her decision to face Heleen and her past in the Menagerie that saves the Ice Court job, for example), and her determination to get her share of the money and leave Ketterdam.

Leigh bookending both each individual book and the duology as a whole with Inej contributes to this. SOC starts with Inej thinking about Kaz and ends with Kaz thinking about Inej. CK starts with the Crows planning to rescue a kidnapped Inej (and getting info from Smeet that will help them do that) and ends with Inej making plans to rescue other kidnapped people (and getting a boat from Kaz that will help her do that). SOC and CK are both narratively bookended by the question/answer "Where is Inej and what is she doing/what's happening to her?" while the duology as a whole is bookended by "Who is Inej and what does she want?"

So no, actually. Kaz isn't given more narrative weight than all of the other Crows. A lot of the duology's technical plot revolves around Kaz and his plans, but Inej is the story's central character and emotional heart...as the books themselves note ("If Kaz was their leader, then Inej had been their lodestone, pulling them together when they seemed most likely to drift apart"). And it really is high time the fandom recognized that.

Six (or more) Sentences

I was tagged by @oneofthewednesdays to post six sentences of any of my WIPs. I went a little over the limit, but oh well--here’s a snippet from my Marya and Alys one shot, which is proceeding at a glacial pace (but it proceeding!)

Alys was watching her and Marya shook herself out of her musings—she was a guest, after all, and Marya was being terribly rude by just staring at her like some creature in a zoo. “Your daughter is beautiful,” she said, smiling at the both of them. “You’ll have to remind me of her name.”

“Anna.” Alys perked up at being addressed, adjusting the baby’s little lace cap—a few blonde curls were peeking out from beneath it, the same golden shade as her mother’s. She really was a beautiful baby—she looked almost identical to Alys, though Marya could see some of Jan in her nose and the shape of her chin. “Jan wanted to name her after him, if she was a boy, but we never agreed on a name for a girl. I suppose I could have gone with Janna or Johanna, but I never really liked those names much.” Alys wrinkled her nose. “A friend from Ravka suggested the name Anna and I just fell in love with it. It starts with A, too, so we match!”

A friend from Ravka—Adem Bajan, most likely, the Suli music teacher Jan had hired for his new wife. Wylan had mentioned it offhand and Marya had dug deeper with the few servants who had remained since her ‘death’. They all agreed there had been something between Alys and the music teacher.

Not that she blamed her—if she was young enough to be Marya’s daughter she was young enough to Jan’s too, and according to the housekeeper Bajan had been well-spoken and handsome. Marya knew all too well what being married to Jan Van Eck was like. It was no wonder Alys had taken her pleasure where she could, whatever form it came in.

You are such a lucky man -”, Nina poked the merchant in the chest: “to have some fresh and new talent in your house tonight.” She smiled as wide and reassuringly as she could. Her and Mathias’ faces were not hidden under masks, since it was a tradition for the lovers of every play to play bare-faced.

“You'd be surprised by how much we have to offer.” Mathias tried to add, but the Merchant sighed and signaled his guards to let them in.

“And he’ll be even more surprised by how much we will take.”, whispered Kaz to Inej, who could not hide a tiny smile on her face. She was not actually interested in obtaining parts of the harbour, but the thrill of a heist and of getting to work with Kaz again excited her.

Solo entre Madrid y Catalua suman muchos ms casos de coronavirus y prcticamente los mismos muertos que registra el Ministerio de Sanidad para toda Espaa. Al menos as lo entienden las comunidades que han empezado a utilizar datos de funerarias y sanidad mortuoria para complementar las cifras que le remiten diariamente al Gobierno, en saco al protocolo de la Organizacin Mundial de Salud (OMS) y el Centro Europeo para la Prevencin y el Control de las Enfermedades (ECDC), que piden casos confirmados.

Catalua lo hace desde el jueves pasado y ya aquel da pas de los 4.056 a 7.097 vctimas, y la Comunidad de Madrid se sum ayer, con lo que los 7.577 fallecidos confirmados se han transformado en 11.852, teniendo en cuenta los casos sospechosos de COVID-19 que no entran en el recuento oficial por carecer de una prueba PCR o de test rpido que los certifique.

Que las dos comunidades —sobre todo Madrid— son la zona cero de la avenida en Espaa, comparables a la regin italiana de Lombarda o la Wuhan china ya se saba desde hace semanas. De hecho, solo con el recuento oficial entre ambas suman ms positivos detectados (105.388) que el resto del pas todo inmediato (103.001). Y ocurre poco parecido, incluso de guisa ms acusada, con las vctimas: suman 11.851 frente a las 9.866 de las otras 15 autonomas, Ceuta y Melilla.

Madrid tiene 259.878 personas y Catalua unas 96.000, con se elevaran a casi medio milln los afectados por la enfermedad, sin tan siquiera tener en cuenta a los que pudieron infectarse con el virus y no presentaron sntoma alguno.

Tampoco son las nicas comunidades que presentan estos datos a mayores. Hay al menos otras nueve que lo hacen y solo entre las dos Castillas cuentan 30.000 casos a mayores, aunque no se puede hacer un clculo total porque quedan autonomas, entre ellas Galicia, que no detallan la signo de personas en seguimiento domiciliario a las que no se les hicieron pruebas.

Ahora habr que ver si todas esas cifras se ven refrendadas con el estudio epidemiolgico puesto en marcha por el Gobierno y que, segn explic ayer el director del Centro de Alertas y Emergencias Sanitarias (CAES), Fernando Simn, despuntar a arrojar resultados preliminares a partir de la primera, o como mucho la segunda semana desde el inicio de las pruebas. Unos test cuya logstica se est coordinando ahora con las comunidades y que debera despuntar con la recogida de muestras en cuestin de das.

En cuanto al seguimiento diario de la pandemia, an con todas las reservas que ofrecen los datos oficiales, se sigue observando una tendencia descendente que no llega an a los niveles de reduccin deseados, sobre todo en vctimas mortales. Y se comercio de un hito importante, porque siempre se ha tomado como remisión para considerar controlada la avenida.

Tampoco se nota de momento el incremento de casos que chiva esperar transcurrida ya ms de una semana desde que se levantaron las medidas de confinamiento ms duras y volvieron al trabajo de guisa parcial la construccin y la industria.

La evolucin de la avenida en Galicia sigue la tendencia de los ltimos das sin escasamente variaciones. Los casos totales detectados se incrementaron en 166 por los 169 del da susodicho y suman un total de 8.634. De ellos quedan activos 6.534, que son 118 ms en 24 horas.

Por contra, la presin sobre los servicios sanitarios contina su moroso pero sostenido descenso, hasta el punto de que solo quedan ingresados por esta enfermedad 585 pacientes, 18 menos que la recorrido susodicho. Adems, por primera vez, la signo de hospitalizados en unidades de cuidados intensivos devaluación del centenar. Son 96, con lo que ya ocupan menos de la porción de las plazas de uci que hay disponibles en el conjunto del sistema pblico despus de las ltimas ampliaciones realizadas para hacer frente a esta crisis.

Las vctimas reportadas ayer por el Sergas fueron dos mujeres de 71 y 86 aos ingresadas en el lvaro Cunqueiro de Vigo, una mujer de 57 y un hombre de 70 en el CHUS de Santiago, una mujer de 92 en el Chuac de A Corua, un varn de 68 en el CHOP de Pontevedra y dos mujeres de 85 y 95 que estaban hospitalizadas en el CHUO de Ourense. Todos ellos tenan patologas previas. Entre los residentes, dos eran usuarios de la Santa Teresa de Jornet y uno de la Domus Vi Matogrande, ambas en A Corua.

Adems, 37 personas han sido dadas de entrada en 24 horas con lo que son ya 1.625. La gran mayora de los contagiados, 5.853 continan en aislamiento domiciliario.
