TEHRAN – Deep within the heart of Iran lies the awe-inspiring site of Tang-e Chogan, a captivating testament to the grandeur of the Sassanid Empire (224–651).

Visiting Tang-e Chogan (literary meaning “Chogan gorge”) is an immersive experience, allowing travelers to traverse the corridors of time and witness the grandeur of an ancient empire. The site is located near Bishapur (“Shapur’s City”) of Fars province. Tang-e Chogan is home to six reliefs related to Shapur I and Bahram I and II. There is also a large statue of Shapur I, which is six meters high, located in the Shapur Cave, at a height of about 700 meters from the river bed.

Furthermore, the site embraces larger and more crowded reliefs than any other Sassanid era reliefs, with three of them being more than 30 square meters in size and a body of more than 30 persons in each relief.

The first relief, which is larger and more crowded than any other one, is a scene celebrating Shapur I’s victory over the Roman Empire. Shapur I can be seen in the center of the relief riding on a horse and Gordianus’s corpse is under the feet of Shapur’s horse, Valerian’s hands are held captive in Shapur’s hand and Philip kneels in front of Shapoor’s horse and demands peace. The Persian military and officers are also behind Shapur in five rows of horses and the Roman officers and noblemen are seen in 5 rows carrying gifts and offerings in front of King Shapur I.

The second one represents the victory of King Bahram II over the Arabs. On the left is Bahram on horseback, and the Arabs are led by Iranian commanders to offer the king horses and camels.

The third bas-relief shows the ceremony of the Bahram I receiving a royal ring from Ahura Mazda. The engraving of this amazing relief is very artistic and even the wrinkles and the details of the clothes and so on are all beautifully illustrated. Everything in this relief fits in amazingly well. Even the physical details of the horse and the veins on the horse’s legs have been shown.

The fourth one depicts the scene of the victory of Bahram II over the rebels, in which the king sits on the throne in the center, while on his right side stand the Iranian commanders and soldiers with respect, and the rebels and captivates on the left. They are brought by Iranian soldiers to the presence of the king.

The fifth bas-relief located on the right side of the gorge is the most intact and complete relief among the others. It is about Shapur’s victory over the Roman Empire.

The sixth one depicts the ceremony of Shapur I receiving a royal ring from Ahura Mazda, as well as his victory in the war against the Romans. In this relief, both King and Ahura Mazda (the creator and highest deity of Zoroastrianism) are shown riding on horses and facing each other.

The Sassanid era is of very high importance in the history of Iran. Under the Sassanids, Persian art and architecture experienced a general renaissance. Architecture often took grandiose proportions, such as the palaces at Ctesiphon, Firuzabad, and Sarvestan, which are amongst the highlights of the ensemble.

Crafts such as metalwork and gem engraving grew highly sophisticated, yet scholarship was encouraged by the state. In those years, works from both the East and West were translated into Pahlavi, the language of the Sassanians.

Rock-carved sculptures and bas-reliefs on abrupt limestone cliffs are widely deemed as characteristics and striking relics of Sassanian art, top examples of which can be traced at Bishapur, Naqsh-e Rostam and Naqsh-e Rajab in southern Iran.

In 2018, UNESCO added an ensemble of Sassanian historical cities in southern Iran — titled “Sassanid Archaeological Landscape of Fars Region”-- to its World Heritage list. The ensemble comprises eight archaeological sites situated in three geographical parts of Firuzabad, Bishapur, and Sarvestan. It reflects the optimized utilization of natural topography and bears witness to the influence of Achaemenid and Parthian cultural traditions and Roman art, which later had a significant impact on the architecture and artistic styles of the Islamic era.

The Sassanid archaeological landscape also represents a highly efficient system of land use and strategic utilization of natural topography.

1 Nephi Chapter 16, "The Compass."

The wicked take the truth to be hard—Lehi’s sons marry the daughters of Ishmael—The Liahona guides their course in the wilderness—Messages from the Lord are written on the Liahona from time to time—Ishmael dies; his family murmurs because of afflictions. About 600–592 B.C.

The Liahona is a "logic compass":

Li= power of logic

Ah= from God

On= Pillar, from the Abode of the Sun

A= The One

Ishmael's Daughters are:

Mahalath= pierces the truth

Basemath= precious or pure, sweet smelling

"For The sage who escapes to refuge to pierce the truth and discover what is pure, the One Who Abides in the Sun will provide the logic."

1 And now it came to pass that after I, Nephi, had made an end of speaking to my brethren, behold they said unto me: Thou hast declared unto us hard things, more than we are able to bear.

5 And it came to pass that they did ahumble themselves before the Lord; insomuch that I had joy and great hopes of them, that they would walk in the paths of righteousness.

6 Now, all these things were said and done as my father dwelt in a tent in the avalley which he called Lemuel.

=Valley of Dreams.

7 And it came to pass that I, Nephi, took one of the adaughters of Ishmael to bwife; and also, my brethren took of the cdaughters of Ishmael to wife; and also dZoram took the eldest daughter of Ishmael to wife.

Nephi the sage marries Nebaioth the high places.

Sam "escape" marries Basemath "balm of God".

Zoram "brother of the wasp" marries Mahalath, the pierce the truth and free from falsehood.

="God's voice announces the hidden truth through the dreamers. Everyone who dissents but humbles themselves before the truth will reach the high places, find balm for their suffering and be forever free of falsehood. All of this is why one should read the Book of Mormon."

8 And thus my father had fulfilled all the acommandments of the Lord which had been given unto him. And also, I, Nephi, had been blessed of the Lord exceedingly.

9 And it came to pass that the voice of the Lord spake unto my father by night, and commanded him that on the morrow he should take his ajourney into the wilderness.

10 And it came to pass that as my father arose in the morning, and went forth to the tent door, to his great astonishment he beheld upon the ground a round aball of curious workmanship; and it was of fine brass. And within the ball were two spindles; and the one bpointed the way whither we should go into the wilderness.

A ball of brass + Spindles=The atzei chayim (sing., aitz chayim) are the two wooden shafts attached to either end of the Torah scroll, around which it is rolled. Each shaft is made long enough to extend beyond the top and bottom of the scroll, and is used as a handle with which to hold the Torah scroll and to scroll from portion to portion.

=the Liahona. A type of compass.

11 And it came to pass that we did gather together whatsoever things we should carry into the wilderness, and all the remainder of our provisions which the Lord had given unto us; and we did take aseed of every kind that we might carry into the wilderness.

12 And it came to pass that we did take our tents and depart into the wilderness, across the river Laman.

=River of Purity. The kind that does not want to give itself up.

13 And it came to pass that we traveled for the space of four days, nearly a south-southeast direction, and we did pitch our tents again; and we did call the name of the place aShazer. [Sha=to turn, Zer= the Rock or the flint. = turn the mind on, to ignite the mind].

Four Days from awakening to intelligence, this is correct. The Fourth Commandment is to observe Shabbat, "conclusion and rebirth" which is what the verse says happened.

14 And it came to pass that we did take our bows and our arrows, and go forth into the wilderness to slay food for our families; and after we had slain food for our families we did return again to our families in the wilderness, to the place of Shazer. And we did go forth again in the wilderness, following the same direction, keeping in the most fertile parts of the wilderness, which were in the borders near the aRed Sea.

The bow and arrow are "distance weapons" used to decode the Torah and all Kabbalah in order to complete Midrash. The Book of Mormon is Midrash.

To supply food using the Bow and Arrow is to feed the mind, the fire mentioned above with knowledge.

15 And it came to pass that we did travel for the space of many days, aslaying food by the way, with our bows and our arrows and our stones and our slings.

16 And we did follow the adirections of the ball, which led us in the more fertile parts of the wilderness.

17 And after we had traveled for the space of many days, we did pitch our tents for the space of a time, that we might again rest ourselves and obtain food for our families.

18 And it came to pass that as I, Nephi, went forth to slay food, behold, I did break my bow, which was made of fine asteel; and after I did break my bow, behold, my brethren were angry with me because of the loss of my bow, for we did obtain no food.

19 And it came to pass that we did return without food to our families, and being much fatigued, because of their journeying, they did suffer much for the want of food.

20 And it came to pass that Laman and Lemuel and the sons of Ishmael did begin to murmur exceedingly, because of their sufferings and afflictions in the wilderness; and also my father began to murmur against the Lord his God; yea, and they were all exceedingly sorrowful, even that they did amurmur against the Lord.

=This happened after Egypt. The former slaves started bitching about having no food- and they had to do for themselves.

The Rebbe's Teachings ”We Ate in Egypt for Free” (v. 5)

One of the complaints of the Jewish people to Moshe was that “we ate in Egypt for free” (v. 5). At first glance, this would appear to mean that food was provided for the Jewish people in Egypt without their having to pay because they were slaves to the Egyptians.

21 Now it came to pass that I, Nephi, having been afflicted with my brethren because of the loss of my bow, and their bows having lost their asprings, it began to be exceedingly difficult, yea, insomuch that we could obtain no food.

22 And it came to pass that I, Nephi, did speak much unto my brethren, because they had hardened their hearts again, even unto acomplaining against the Lord their God.

23 And it came to pass that I, Nephi, did amake out of wood a bow, and out of a straight stick, an arrow; wherefore, I did arm myself with a bow and an arrow, with a sling and with stones. And I said unto my bfather: Whither shall I go to obtain food?

The Sling with Stones=

There are wicked people of whom the verse says, "And may He hurl away the soul of you enemies as one shoots a stone from a slingshot" (SamuelI 25:29);

24 And it came to pass that he did ainquire of the Lord, for they had bhumbled themselves because of my words; for I did say many things unto them in the energy of my soul.

25 And it came to pass that the voice of the Lord came unto my father; and he was truly achastened because of his murmuring against the Lord, insomuch that he was brought down into the depths of sorrow.

26 And it came to pass that the voice of the Lord said unto him: Look upon the ball, and behold the things which are written.

27 And it came to pass that when my father beheld the things which were awritten upon the ball, he did fear and tremble exceedingly, and also my brethren and the sons of Ishmael and our wives.

28 And it came to pass that I, Nephi, beheld the pointers which were in the ball, that they did work according to the afaith and diligence and heed which we did give unto them.

29 And there was also written upon them a new writing, which was plain to be read, which did give us aunderstanding concerning the ways of the Lord; and it was written and changed from time to time, according to the faith and diligence which we gave unto it. And thus we see that by bsmall means the Lord can bring about great things.

30 And it came to pass that I, Nephi, did go forth up into the top of the mountain, according to the adirections which were given upon the ball.

31 And it came to pass that I did slay wild abeasts, insomuch that I did obtain food for our families.

32 And it came to pass that I did return to our tents, bearing the beasts which I had slain; and now when they beheld that I had obtained afood, how great was their joy! And it came to pass that they did humble themselves before the Lord, and did give thanks unto him.

33 And it came to pass that we did again take our journey, traveling nearly the same course as in the beginning; and after we had traveled for the space of many days we did pitch our tents again, that we might tarry for the space of a time.

34 And it came to pass that aIshmael died, and was buried in the place which was called bNahom.

=Obedience died in a place called "Nahum" or "compassion". Compassion is an instinct and cannot be made to manifest out of obedience.

35 And it came to pass that the daughters of Ishmael did amourn exceedingly, because of the loss of their father, and because of their bafflictions in the wilderness; and they did cmurmur against my father, because he had brought them out of the land of Jerusalem, saying: Our father is dead; yea, and we have wandered much in the wilderness, and we have suffered much affliction, hunger, thirst, and fatigue; and after all these sufferings we must perish in the wilderness with hunger.

36 And thus they did murmur against my father, and also against me; and they were desirous to areturn again to Jerusalem.

37 And Laman said unto Lemuel and also unto the sons of Ishmael: Behold, let us aslay our father, and also our brother Nephi, who has taken it upon him to be our bruler and our teacher, who are his elder brethren.

=the Ego, which does not want to be yoked but wants to daydream all day long does not want to hear the Voice of God or that of the Sage.

38 Now, he says that the Lord has talked with him, and also that aangels have ministered unto him. But behold, we know that he lies unto us; and he tells us these things, and he worketh many things by his cunning arts, that he may deceive our eyes, thinking, perhaps, that he may lead us away into some strange wilderness; and after he has led us away, he has thought to make himself a king and a ruler over us, that he may do with us according to his will and pleasure. And after this manner did my brother Laman bstir up their hearts to canger.

39 And it came to pass that the Lord was with us, yea, even the voice of the Lord came and did speak many words unto them, and did achasten them exceedingly; and after they were chastened by the voice of the Lord they did turn away their anger, and did repent of their sins, insomuch that the Lord did bless us again with food, that we did not perish.

Laman, the ego wants to run wild into "strange wilderness" but the sage, chastened by the Teachings feeds himself with wisdom instead, and steadfast, does not perish.

Looking for Light - A Journey

When given the task brief “Looking for Light A Journey” I took immediate inspiration from one of the photos by Todd Hido used as an example in the brief. The photo featured a room of a house without any furniture, very bare, with the warm light of a sun rise or sunset filling the back wall stuck in my mind. Looking at the image I felt a sense of something missing and absence about it. The absence of people, existence, furniture and life and the wonder as to the cause of the absence.

I wanted to find a space where I could capture this mood as well as capture a similar light coming through the window. A feeling of warmth, cold, history, emptiness and abandonment. Also I wanted to capture depth and detail in the images using long exposures with the lens focal setting at a medium or high f number. The location I found was an abandoned farming croft house tucked away in the hills behind Dingwall. I came across this croft house a few years ago while on a little walk. The condition of the croft was pretty interesting as it was still fairly intact, showing signs of its former inhabitation. It even still had old wall paper clinging onto the walls in the living room. But there were still large signs of deterioration within, wallpaper rotting, floor boards missing, back wall in the kitchen area partially collapsed. But it still felt like it could have been inhabited within living memory.

The first image I had set was of the fireplace in the living area. I arrived around 3pm as the sun was about to set under the hills to the west. Golden light was pouring through the south facing window and on to the fireplace. Rather appt for the fireplace to vast in the warm glow. I set my camera on a tripod in the back corner of the living room. Lens focal length set to f/ 8, ISO 100 and exposure length between 2 and 3 seconds. I took several versions, some in landscape and some in portrait. Very pleased with the final results and would need very minimal adjustments in post-production optimizations.

Second images I wanted to have a colder, lonelier feel. This featured the door of the living room leading out to the corridor and the boarded-up front entrance to the croft with light peering in between the door panels. Camera still on the tripod, repositioned next to the front wall of the living room facing out into the corridor. Camera settings still the same as before to capture the deteriorate details of the house.

Third and final images was to be an exterior image looking towards the croft. By this time the sun had gone down, darkness was creeping in. I wanted this image to look like the ghosts of the past still inhabited by having light emanating from the living room. I set up and torch in the fireplace and a large candle in the window. This shot was still rather tricky to achieve as I only had the one lens with me and I had to move away a fair distance to fit it into the frame. Camera settings were the same, but this image required a bit more optimizing in post to get the atmosphere I really desired with the warm orange light coming out of the living room window.

I am very happy with what I was able to achieve with this shoot. I think the colours are rich, the images are dripping with a moody atmosphere, the light in each one gives off a different vibe.

The aim of this project, "Looking for Light: A Journey" was to explore and photograph different types of light.

I began by doing some research and I found Sean Tucker's videos on light to be quite interesting and helpful. Inspired by his photographs, my first thought was to shoot photos of light on architecture. Unfortunately, this wasn't really an option for me as I don't live close enough to the city, so I switched my focus to natural light and started to consider what light is. Not about the scientific definition but more about what light is in our everyday lives and what light means to us as people. I thought about our main source of light (the Sun) and how it can have an impact on emotion and mood. The darkness of the winter months can make us feel down and cold whereas the light and brightness in the summer months can lift our spirits. I took this into consideration when beginning to plan my shoot. light is hugely associated with mood and emotion.

After the research stage, I started to plan my shoot. Between the restrictions and the weather being quite dull this past week, I decided to do my project indoors. I started thinking about different ways light came into my house: through the windows and doors, filtering through blinds, reflecting off a mirrored surface and considered the different ways I could capture creative shots of light.

Next, I started to consider what my journey would be. I considered the journeys I completed daily, the walk and my daily routine but I couldn't find anything interesting to photograph. I felt quite stumped but then I steered my thoughts away from the idea of a literal journey and started to think about a metaphorical journey. A journey that was simple and ordinary but held meaning and could be interpreted in various ways. A journey through my room.

The first image is of candlelight projecting through the pattern of a pot. There are candles all over my bedroom. They are a very prominent feature of my space and I find the soft glow of the candle quite relaxing and calming. The next image is reflected light through a bottle of water. I always make sure that wherever I go I have a bottle of water with me and I have a large bottle with 'you got this' printed on the front that is permanently at my desk. The final image is the light pattern on the back of a CD. I absolutely love listening to music and while most of it I stream online through different platforms I still have some CDs.

My final images are quite simple and at first glance, I feel like they don't quite go together. There isn't any obvious theme or connection that shows a link between the three images. But the link that joins these images is of course that they are equal parts of a journey. I think this is a meaningful journey captured in a simplistic way. It is open to interpretation and could indeed be perceived as random by someone who doesn't know the story, but I think that I was I like. The title could be interpreted in many different ways,

If I was to do this project again I would like to take a different approach. I would perhaps shoot the same scene at different times of the day, capturing the lighting in different ways or maybe show a physical journey from A to B and the capture the light I find on my way.
