finally listened to new allie x single - although my enthusiasm slightly died off after "girl with no face" (pretty bad sign if i dont feel much for the title track....), i actually really like the production here again.... having high hopes for the upcoming album again! ive always loved her collaboration with violet chachki so im unbelievably excited to hear more neo-synthpop(?) sounds from allie. yayyyy

Cape God — Allie X

2020 — review — ★★★☆☆

This is the second time I listened to this album. The first time being back in 2020 when the album dropped, right when covid-19 started to get serious. First listen didn't manage to grasp me and is one of the reason I started to distant myself from Allie X's music.

This time isn't very different. I really tried to enjoy it as much as I could but the songs are so far away from what I liked about Allie X's music. Gone is the fun synth pop she's so good at and with that a lot of, if not all of her personal touch.

The songs aren't bad by any means. But it feels like they lack personality and purpose. The first 3 songs are good and showcase how she can try different things than before. Unfortunately this change doesn't let her go all the way and ends up sounding too safe. You can still hear some of her usual touch at times on some songs but that's not enough. The production feels too secure, she doesn't take any risk while changing her sound removing most of what made her music hers. Even the collaborations with Troye Sivan and Mitski failed to move me.

Unfortunately, I ended up feeling bored by the end of the listening experience. I'm happy that she ditched this sound for the next era, at least it seems like it. I'll probably won't go back to this record anytime soon.

Nintendo playground: In the golden wasteland lobby, just past the closets, there is a locked gate which won’t open unless you or a friend you’re holding hands with has one of two specific capes on (like the Office). If you or your friend do have one of the capes, you can enter the playground— which is an area that locks the camera so you can play in “2D” (there is an option to turn it to 3D in the level). The capes are available to buy to anyone playing on switch.

The war: If you’ve spent any time looking at Sky’s lore, it is fairly clear that, at some point, there was a war. The general themes of the golden wasteland (spirits, elder, the battlefield), the Aurora concert (the seed and eyes of a child), the consistent sword and shield imagery… something definitely happened here, though it’s unclear what.

Megabird: In Orbit, if you look up at the sky, there are a bunch of stars— many of which forming what looks to be a birdlike head. You can see it more clearly during the credit sequence. This is believed by many to be an entity known as the Megabird, who is basically the god of this world— the one who created everything.

Eggs in boneyard: To the right of the broken bridge, there is a tree that has some light blue eggs in its top.

King/Prince: An entity/entities which appear(s) most in concept art and the statues from the battlefield in GW. Very little is known about them, apart from them being the king of Sky at some point before the events of the game— completing the trials of prophecy and henceforth becoming ruler. It’s unclear if the King and Prince are separate entities. It’s a common theory that they were a skykid, or the first skykid, hence why the trials were easier for them. Their concept names are Alef for the Prince, and Resh for the King (more on that later).

Darkstone: Darkstone is most present in collecting it during the Season of Abyss and activating some doors, and has been theorized to be the downfall of the kingdom of Sky, acting as a metaphor for climate change and nature vs technology. It has been theorized that this is what caused the war— the Isle, Prairie, and Forest not wanting to go further, while Valley, Wasteland, and Vault wanted progression. It has also been proven to originate from what looks to be sucking the Light from light creatures, primarily mantas presumably.

Constellation: In the “Concert in the Light” album, the song that plays during the credits can be found, so people can finally listen to the song on platforms other than YouTube (though the official version cuts off the second half, only including the part with Aurora’s vocals). In this album, the name of the song is “Constellation”.

Elders’ old names: In concept art, the elders all had names based off Hebrew letters. In order from Isle to Vault: Daleth, Ayin, Teth, Samekh (sometimes Sah for one and Mekh for the other to differentiate, but they share the name), Tsadi, and Lamed. They’re also sometimes referred as the time of day their realm represents: Dawn, Day, Rain, Sunset, Dusk, and Night.

Light Awaits: An early version/prototype/beta of Sky, before it was released as what it is now.

Chinese servers: Like many multiplayer games, China has their own version of the game with its own servers, and a slightly different way of running things. Based off some discord messages, they might choose the traveling spirit based on what the community wants rather than it being random, and have different events.

Queer Metalhead History

It’s time for a brief lesson about the history of queerness and metal music. That’s right, the metal and queer communities are old friends and allies. 

So, the leather community has been around since the late 1920′s/early 1930′s, but leather bars specifically became more popular in the late 1950′s. And you know who was hanging out at leather bars? Gay bikers and veterans, who needed safe places to gather during McCarthyism and the Lavender Scare. In fact, the Satyr Motorcycle Club, the oldest gay biker club in the United States, was recently inducted into the Leather Hall of Fame.

And who was spending time in those clubs and with those gangs? Rob Halford, lead singer and songwriter for the legendary heavy metal band (and my personal favorite band of all time) Judas Priest. His song “Raw Deal” (1977) includes the line: “The true free expression I demand is human rights” and references “Fire Island”, a popular gay hangout in New York. 

He stated in a 2019 interview: “I urge people, LGBTQ, any of us that are still trying to find that moment to break down the door … step forward and say, 'This is who I am and I’m proud of who I am. I'm not going to be intimidated. I'm not going to live in fear. I'm not going to put everybody else before me.”

In 2020 he was interviewed by Rolling Stone and said: “Everything changes when you hit the stage. Just getting out there and holding a mic, there’s something very tangible that shifts in me and suddenly it’s the Metal God. It’s a bit like when Superman went into the phone booth and came out. Whereas he came out in a cape and tights, I come out in leather chaps.”

The title “Metal God” comes from Priest’s sixth studio album, British Steel, which was released in 1980. The album cover depicts a man’s hand holding a razor blade and wearing a spiked leather cuff on his wrist; Halford’s experiences in the leather community forever affected the metal community, who picked up on this trend quickly and spread it through the culture. 

He posted selfies with his favorite cat t-shirts through the entirety of the COVID-19 lockdown, for fuck’s sake, and swaps book recommendations with his life partner, Thomas. 

And yet the metal community remains largely homophobic, with Motley Crue’s Nikki Sixx using the f-slur repeatedly, the infamous “AIDS Kills F***s” t-shirt worn by Skid Row’s guitarist Sebastian Bach, and plenty of other examples should you care to learn more. 

This Pride Month, as a metalhead raised by an 80′s metalhead who took my queer ass to see Judas Priest a few years back (love you Dad), let’s say thank you to this badass “stately homosexual”. Let’s remember who’s predominantly responsible (not entirely, but he helped A LOT) for the leather aesthetic in metal. For some of the queerest lyrics of all time (Grinder, anyone? Perhaps Hell Bent for Leather?). For being a general badass Metal God.

have you done a track by track review of Cluster? not an album technically but it is very beloved to me

sure :) i listen to it all the time so

crave - sometimes you want some good ass pop punk that stands out little and this song is the one you want. what else can i say. lyrically, the song follows geoff's perspective during a breakup he was going through at the time (and awsten would soon have himself by the time the ep was released). it uses the imagery of awsten's room because they lived on the same bunk bed together there for a while so it all makes sense on why the song is the way it is. i love the geoff solo even if you can't tell it's him on the first listen bc his and awsten's vocal tones are so similar. - 8/10

territory - i listen to this song a lot but i could not tell you what it's about for sure, specifically those first lines. from what i can gather, it's mostly about contemplating over the state of a relationship, and the obsession that comes with staying despite things going pretty stormy. musically, there's these pretty jangly guitars throughout the song, its simple parts contrasting with the rolling thunder of the drums. good ass song. i still do not know what the "filtered mood swings oh wait they're indie" lyrics are supposed to mean - 8/10

mad all the time - this is legitimately my most listened to song on spotify. it's so good and it does not help that with every year it keeps being relatable. a song about writer's block that turns into venting about awsten's life at that point. it begins with this haunting, stuttering melody of guitars accompanied by a drum pad that evolves into the wailing riffs and drums in the chorus as awsten repeats the title. it's too good of a song i have to listen to it at least 10 times to feel like i listened to it enough. - 9/10

pink - a song about being obsessed from afar over someone you've known for a long time. it's a cute little pop punk song with electronic embellishments that add the parx touch but wow this song. of course, i think we're all familiar with the "it's just that it's not fun when i find out you're playing for the other team" lyric that awsten literally refuses to explain other than say the song isn't about a lesbian. he probably shot himself in the foot with that a little, but i digress good song, we are never going to find out what he meant by that for real - 8/10

no capes - i feel like no one really notices how well pink segues into this song whether on accident or on purpose with its sparkly intro building into the verses. a song about the doubts coming with getting bigger as a band and managing expectations if things go wrong. it's one of those songs that sound happy until you actually listen to the lyrics when awsten starts pleading for someone to listen and doubt himself. it's sad but it's also fun (musically). it's one of those songs that make you sit down and go fuuuuuuuuuccccccck - 8/10

god this is a good ep. the fact that this could've been an album is its only crime but i get it, they were a newly signed band so i'm relying on awsten to leak those damn demos when he can. i like this ep in particular because of that desolate feeling the guitars will have on most of the songs on top of some of the subject matter. this is an indie album (to me). stream cluster everyday all day you won't regret it. - iz

2. Album of the year?

the sophtware slump grandaddy... kind of depressing album to define a year but its so insanely good. listened to it a tonnn january/febuary and then got back into it again recently its such a winter album. all of grandaddys stuff just conveys this feeling of listlessness and wandering aimlessly which i really clicked with on the ship. he's simple he's dumb he's the pilot, jeds other poem (beautiful ground), and miner at the dial-a-view are my top songs off it.

22. Favorite place you visited this year?

SEEE i saw so many cool places and could have so many cool answers barbados, ithaca, DC, and st. thomas are definitely high on the list. but im gonna give the lame out answer and say that just sailing around aimless was my favorite "place". the first 2 weeks before i went up to the bridge i geniuenly had no clue where we were and i just sat outside everydays in the middle of the ocean god knows where and it was incredibly beautiful. for a more specific answer the mid-atlantic was the coolest, SPECIFICALLY CAPE HATTERAS!!! the carribean also has its charm but there's something very very old about the atlantic that you could feel.
