The way scum villain has so many themes about writing/the literary arts and mdzs has so many themes about music and tgcf has so many themes about visual art and how each character that represents each of those respectively has their own struggle with their craft (passion burnout, loss of control over their ip/creation, obsession and dissociation) that gets turned on its head as their stories continue and their art comes to represent satisfaction and connection and devotion and love

my all-time favorite False Childhood Memory is the time Mister Rogers guest-starred for an episode of The Magic School Bus. I can find no record of this actually happening but I remember it vividly and by gosh mcgolly wouldn't that have been the niftiest beans

#in my memory it started out Roger Rabbit style (w/ Real World Mr Rogers being visited by cartoon characters) #and then the Bus transformed into a machine that transformed MISTER ROGERS into a cartoon #and then he hopped on the Bus to join the class for a Standard Educational-Yet-Traumatic Magical Field Trip #also the animation style was suspiciously similar to the time the Supernatural Bros guest starred on Scooby Doo #so that really should have tipped me off about the reliability of this specific memory #(also i remember being really anxious about whether or not Mr Rogers would be permanently stuck in the toon world #so in hindsight this was probably just another weirdly vivid stress dream i get those a lot #and they can be a Wild Ride (magic school bus theme song callback) #as anyone who stuck around with me through the Clown Deli Meat Dream Post can testify #)

I love that ship where both characters are introduced as friendly, only for one to turn out to have been lying the whole time and try to kill the other, all of which eventually culminates in their defeat and dramatic (and literal) fall, only then for them to return as a reluctant ally of their once enemy who knows them way too well and whose new relationship with them is largely interpreted as bantery. lego ninjago really had it all. father vs son villain vs hero dynamic. serpentine suggests getting rid of lloyd and garmadon throws him over the side of the ship. garmadon also needs to defeat lloyd but you can't touch his son. brother vs brother fighting. an entire episode about class struggles bc the ninja do not get paid to be ninja and have to live in a shitty one room apartment. silly magic and lore about elemental powers. lloyd having to both literally and metaphorically grow up too quickly. zane and nya's identity issues. nya finding her own identity in a group of ninjas and having her own thing outside of her brother. kai and nya reconnecting with their parents through their powers. cole having to be a literal ghost and deal with the fact that he's dead. a silly old man that drinks tea and walks around on his pupil's shoulder. campy action. dragons. what more do you want from a series

obligatory childe post ft 4.2 archon quest spoilers and also my incomprehensible ramblings (read at your own discretion)

fontaine left me with a Lot of thoughts about childe even if his screen time was kinda pitiful

it's been opening up a lot of implications for childe's potentional importance to the greater, overall plot of the story though and its driving me up a WALL but more importantly it's made me pick apart his character

which brings me to Fontaine actually being PERFECT for him to have featured in, actually. because the whole damn nation is a theater, a stage for its archon. Hydro has never fit him better because the parallels of focalors/furina to ajax/tartaglia aren't exact but it's pretty damn close. a separation of the "other" (divine in case of focalors, whatever is wrong w childe in his case) and human.

I just think a lot about how Tartaglia is only ever Ajax with family. you really don't see his old name anywhere, he's pretty openly adopted Tartaglia (kinda childe too) as his name literally in every other circumstance. which you can chalk up to just like. well, he's usually on fatui business, of course he'd use his fatui name, but. even with traveler, it's childe.

so. you know. makes me wonder if as far as he's concerned, Ajax is dead. "Ajax" died when he fell down that crack in the ground and something else crawled back out.

which makes me wonder how he'd feel about the Creator calling him Ajax.

conflicted, probably. because you know him well enough to know his old name..but he's not Ajax anymore, is he? he's not the child with a sword in hand trying to play adventurer, he's a Harbinger. he's Childe, he's Tartaglia.

conflicted because he has doubts, even if he'd never voice them, that maybe you like "Ajax" more then Childe.

Okay, I have a question for fellow Spies Are Forever fans. One thing I find super interesting about the show is that, perhaps more than any other piece of media I can think of, the musical seems to have few casual fans; I'm sure there are some out there, but it's a pretty consistent thing that if this show resonates with you it RESONATES. Something that happens relatively often (and is always a joy to observe) is seeing someone go "I'm going to watch Spies Are Forever for the first time!" and then follow it up with something along the lines of "my life has irrevocably changed and I will never stop thinking about this". And I know using hyperbole about those kinds of feelings about fiction isn't uncommon, but something about the show does feel like it genuinely sticks with people. I know it did for me, I first watched it 2019-2020 and while obsessions come and go it's stayed with me pretty constantly since then.

I think that's the case for a lot of other people too, and that brings me to my question: what do you think is it about Spies Are Forever that makes it so impactful? I want to do some thinking on that front myself (I have a few ideas that need more fleshing out), but I was like well I could just ASK other people why this show in particular means so much to them so... yeah! If you have any insights into why Spies Are Forever stays with you (or with the fans in general), I'd really appreciate hearing from you!

I think a part of why I find Hub so cool is how he seems to be one that won't hold back in a fight. These sketches don't even scratch the surface on what I mean, but he has this certain feel on the battlefield.
