because i’m a fan of ridiculous, silly domestic aus: ryan who buys a roomba (equal parts laziness, curiosity, and time management induced) and shane who names it, just because:

“so what’s its name?”

ryan looks up from the roomba, which is puttering around his living room and intermittently bumping into furniture, to furrow his brow at shane. “its name?”

“mhm.”

“it’s... it’s a vacuum cleaner. it doesn’t have a name.”

shane looks at the roomba thoughtfully. “what about roger.”

“rog-- stop. no. you’re not--”

“roger the roomba.” shane nods to himself.

“i’m not calling my vacuum roger.”

“ricky?”

“no.”

“roger it is!”

no, no it is not, ryan refuses to let this happen, except then goddammit if shane doesn’t cheerfully say hey, roger! every time he goes over to ryan’s for movie night, or aw, roger’s tired whenever the roomba gets low on battery and starts making unhappy booping noises, or--

so of course one night ryan’s making popcorn while shane gets a movie set up, and he hears the frantic beeping that signifies something got caught in the wheels of the roomba. he sighs heavily and pokes his head into the living room with an irritated roger, what the hell, and then he freezes because oh no.

shane looks delighted. it’s awful. it’s the worst. ryan’s going to kill him.

roger makes an infuriatingly pleased boop when ryan clears the debris from his wheel track. unbelievable.

It’s in the aftermath of a heist gone bad, after Jeremy pulls a stunt that nearly costs him his life, after the whole crew’s spread out into shitty motels along the coast. 

It’s morning, Ryan sitting in a bed he wishes were his own, dried blood stiffening his hair still after a long night where he and Jeremy didn’t talk much, Ryan too caught up in the anger and the helplessness and the what-ifs.

Jeremy’d been gone when he’d woken up, sunlight streaming in through dirty Venetian blinds and throwing everything into sepia tones, and it’s a good thing Jeremy pushes the motel room door open not long after Ryan wakes, because Ryan might’ve gone looking for him, because–god, because everything’s too fragile right now.

When he enters the room, he gives Ryan a faint, cautious smile and tosses a paper bag at him.

Ryan fumbles it, picks it up off the bed, sits up cross-legged and opens the bag. Three glazed crullers, still warm, sit on top of one another. He narrows his eyes. “Are these apology donuts?”

Jeremy smiles again. “Depends on if they’re working or not.”

They are, but Ryan just hums noncommittally and takes one of the crullers from the bag. He starts pulling it apart with his fingers, tearing it into bite-sized pieces and popping them into his mouth one by one. Between bites, he eyes Jeremy.

One of these days, one of them’s not gonna be lucky enough to make it out alive. Ryan knows that.

He’s just hoping he’ll go out first.

For now, god, okay, Jeremy’s whole and breathing and smiling at him, anxious little creases at his eyes, and Ryan relents. The anger, it’s not worth it, not when they’re both still around to face the next fight.

“C'mere,” he mumbles, mouth full. Jeremy grins, bright as anything, and flops down onto the bed beside him. 

Later, maybe, they’ll talk about taking risks, about being careful, about what it means to love someone in this business.

For now, Ryan pushes pieces of crueler into Jeremy’s waiting mouth and watches the sun bring the room into color.

so @80-percent-leg <3 asked me about my favorite shyan fics, or if i had any recs, but

a) i’m a slow/inactive reader and i haven’t read 0.1% of the 2000+ fics on ao3 and that’s not an exaggeration, 

b) my memory sucks,

I’ve been a part of the Unsolved fandom since November 2017, and I continue to be staggered at just how goddamn talented this fandom is. I’ve read so, so many thousands of words of quality fic, and I wanted to share a few of my faves with you! this list includes Shyan and ot3 fics, along with a few crossovers.

Ryan/Sara/Shane

A Perfect Piece of Ass, Like Every Californian by beethechange. 6866 words, rated E. ao3.   “Happy birthday, Shane,” Sara says. “I got you a Ryan.”

Comments: this is just pure, unadultered smut and frankly, we don’t deserve Bee. she’s so good and this is so good.

Civil Discussion by ricky_goldsworth. 1854 words, rated E. ao3. “Sara,” Ryan says, very seriously. “You can have sex anywhere, if you’re determined enough.”

Comments: in real life, I have an impassioned rant ready to go at any given moment about how dumb of an idea shower sex is, but this fic almost changed my mind. it’s that incredible.

Cotton by ricky_goldsworth. 561 words, rated T. ao3. It starts on a Saturday night.

Comments: clothes sharing is my favorite trope of all time, and this was super sweet and perfect.

Daisy Canfield Will Have Her Revenge On Los Angeles by ricky_goldsworth. 5852 words, rated T. ao3.  Once Sara becomes a permanent addition to the True Crime crew, it’s inevitable that she ends up roped into the filming for the next season of Supernatural, too.

Comments: This is the first ot3 fic I ever read and it made me fall in love with them. The dynamic is spot-on, and the way they fall together is very sweet and natural. 

ghoooOOOooost.mov by ElasticElla. 1542 words, rated M. ao3 & tumblr.  "Did I tell you Shane and I might’ve caught a ghost on video?”

Comments: not only does this fic have one of the best titles that I’ve ever seen, but I’m a sucker for Ryan being stuck on Sara and Shane, and this fic is a nice twist on that!

hands to the sky (show me that you're mine) by angelsaves. 3631 words, rated E. ao3.   Sara fills in for Shane on a Buzzfeed Unsolved Supernatural shoot, and she and Ryan totally see a ghost. The only way to keep it from infiltrating their nightmares is, of course, cuddling.

Comments: I love, love this, especially the Ryan/Sara dynamic! 

Ryan/Shane

a breath of myth and mystery by abovetheruins. 8295 words, rated M. ao3 & tumblr. At first Shane has no idea what the whole song and dance routine is about. All he sees is the familiar broad span of Ryan's back, the dimples resting just above his ass, the dip of his spine, and miles of bronze skin, until Ryan nudges his hoodie further up the length of his back, wincing as he carefully maneuvers the hem over what Shane realizes aren't actually folds in the fabric but lumps beneath it.

Comments: I’ve never been a huge wing!fic person, but this fic changed my mind. it’s wonderfully written, and there’s some extremely sensual moments that were a delight to read.

(a moment) by thisissirius. 1437 words, rated G. ao3.   Ryan is shivering when they get back to the motel. 

comments: Look, you can never have enough huddling for warmth! this is extremely sweet and fluffy.

and all the birds have flown by anarchetypal. 1575 words, rated M. ao3. Detective Madej knows Ryan Bergara is guilty, but there’s no evidence. Nothing will stick to him. He’s like smoke, and Shane can’t catch him.

Comments: I love a good serial killer au, and this is right up there. the narration is very different and unique, and I dig it.

and i'm puffing my chest, getting red in the face by pissedofsandwich. 6052 words, rated T. ao3.  Or: Shane is definitely not at all jealous of how close Zack and Ryan are getting during the making of Sports Conspiracies. Except that he is.

Comments: I love jealous Shane, and I love Zack Evans, and this fic has a multitude of both. the ending is fantastic.  

Back to You by punk_rock_yuppie. 6168 words, rated T. ao3 & tumblr. Shane wakes up and knows immediately that something is wrong.

Comments: this fic punched me in the heart. it’s a little bit angsty and a little bit bittersweet and extremely good. 

Be Your Teenage Dream Tonight by hapakitsune. 4203 words, rated E. ao3.   Shane wears a cheerleader outfit for #content and things get weird.

Comments: have you ever wondered if there was smut involving That cheerleader outfit? I’m here to tell you that yes, there is, and it is amazing. 

but still let me tell you that i love who you are by BooyahFordhamYacht. 1136 words, rated G. ao3. Or, five voicemails from Ryan that Shane refuses to delete.

Comments: Look y’all, I’m also sucker for coffee shop AUs and this one is perfect. their dynamic is complicated and feels super natural, and the ending is very soft.

Comments: so y’all know that video about Shane walking in heels? this fic came first. it is hilarious and smutty and perfectly characterized, and comes complete with a cake recipe!

He’d always had the hunger under control, didn’t need to feed often or much at all unless he had gone too long without. Food sustained him just as well, though it never did quite sate that itch, the craving for skin and sweat, breath and heat.

Comments: I didn’t know that I needed incubus Ryan until this fic, but not only is it quite hot, it’s also surprisingly sweet and domestic!

Comments: this fic was a present for me, and what a marvelous present. Shane fawning over how Ryan looks playing basketball, plus frottage? it’s truly wonderful.

Hold Your Breath, It Gets Better by beethechange. 10297 words, rated E. ao3.  Comments and summary: Essentially, Shane discovers Ryan’s anal beads. Shenanigans ensue. Very well-written, ludicrously hot shenanigans.

Comments: another orphaned fic. One of the tags on this is ‘sensuality’ and honestly, what an accurate tag. The first kiss in this is a+.

Comments: The way this author writes kills me. The details, how thoroughly they get into both of their heads, the analysis of their relationship, it’s all so damn good. 

I love your bones (series) by thewindupbird. 32,357 words across three works, rated E. ao3. 

Comments: the precursors to Maelstrom, these fics are bittersweet and beautiful and painful, all in the best way possible.

One of them, and you'll never guess who, gets more than a little freaked out. Featuring: pure terror! confessions of love! and a somewhat-terrifying framed photograph of a woman!

Comments: this is such a cute fic, with an exceptionally soft Shane just wanting to be alone with Ryan. it’s so fluffy.

if you believe in magic by abovetheruins. 2908 words, rated E. ao3.  Ryan has this theory – just the one, because it’s the only one that makes sense. Not that it actually does make sense, because… well, it doesn’t. Shane will say that it doesn’t, anyway. He’ll say that it’s ridiculous, that it’s illogical, that the only reason it exists in the first place is because it strokes Ryan’s ego, and hey, he’s not wrong.

Comments: this is a last minute addition, because I read it last night and my brain just kinda shouted hot damn the entire time.

Comments: I have a soft heart and fluff makes me happy, so this definitely made me happy.

Comments: Look, I’m a big fan of that trope, so I really enjoyed this!

i'll tell you about the magic (it'll free your soul) (series) by  punk_rock_yuppie. 18260 words across three works, rated E. ao3.  A variety of magical creatures inhabit the earth: werewolves, sirens, and faeries, oh my! The LA Buzzfeed office is chockful of these creatures; here are some of the shenanigans they get up to.

Comments: Features telepath Ryan, demon Shane and some delightful BuzzFeed shenanigans! 

I’m Gonna Keep You in Love with Me (for a While) by beethechange. 21847 words, rated E. ao3.  Comments and summary: Every fandom needs a married in Vegas fic. This is that fic for the Unsolved fandom. It’s one of the best things I’ve ever read. Bee writes developing relationships like no one else. 

i’m lost without you by bodhirookes. 7213 words, rated M. ao3.  Ryan's weekend long Star Wars marathon gets interrupted when Shane starts throwing rocks at his window, and it only gets better from there. As in, lots of boys crying and having life-affirming sex and Jake Bergara kicking ass and taking names better.

Comments: There seem to be surprisingly few high school aus in this fandom, but this one is A+. It’s perfectly sweet and nostalgic. 

In These Frozen and Silents Nights by beethechange. 25257 words. ao3 & tumblr. Planning a shoot at a remote cabin in Vermont the week before Christmas wasn't Ryan’s best-ever idea. Taking a leisurely walk in a blizzard wasn't Shane’s. Scrap the ep, there’s a new plan: survive the storm, stay warm, try not to kill each other, and figure some shit out along the way.

Comments: If you love Shyan in general or snowed-in fics in particular, you need to do yourself a favor and read this. The characterization is nothing less than perfect, it made me laugh, it gave me emotions... this fic is essentially perfect. The comment I left on it is embarassingly long and rambling.

it started like this by sky_somedays. 2465 words, rated T. ao3.   Shane thinks that if he can just pin down when it started, maybe he can do something about it. Think himself out of it, somehow. Understand the problem to solve the problem.

Comments: this fic feels like a series of vignettes, documenting some moments in their friendship/relationship, and the writing style is fantastic.

Comments: I can’t put my feelings about this fic into proper words. Please just know that it’s probably one of the best things I’ve ever read, and that’s including published works.

Comments: an orphaned series, but the author is absolutely amazing. This series is about Shane and Ryan growing up together, and it’s beautiful, and the nostalgia is utterly magnificent. like childhood friends? how can you go wrong?

Comments: if y’all like meet-cute fic, then boy do I have the fic for you. this was one of the first fics I read in the fandom and it is adorable.

Summary: Ryan finds out Shane is a demon after squirting him with his holy water gun. They both react.

Comment: The summary (cause it’s my own) sounds cheesy af, but it’s actual a darker, more serious fic (though it’s definitely humorous at times). Ryan’s fear kink is 10/10.

Horror and Chill, Baby by Squeakyshroom

Summary: Ryan won't chill, so Shane gives him a helping hand.Or: Ryan's straight but not when Shane touches him like that.

Comment: Hot damn. This fic is a college au progression of their relationship, with Ryan coming to terms that he likes a guy, and that guy is Shane. Also, super hot but pure cause they have “horror and chill” nights.

Maple Close (series) by summonedwheezes 

Summary: Ryan and Shane are childhood friends who grow up together, fall apart, and fall back together. 

Comment: I’VE BEEN BLESSED BY THIS SERIES! Love this au, love the different perspectives, love the fluff and the spice. @summonedwheezes ‘s writing is so melodious. All in all beautiful.

Summary: Ryan knew there was something wrong from the start. And he loved it.

Commentary: Boy, this one is amazing. I love fucked up shit, and this fic it’s-- it has such a moment in it, such a powerful scene, just the image of it it’s enough to make you want to scream. Read with the Raw soundtrack, man.

Eventually, the Darkness Stares Back by EAST (WESTAGE)

Summary: Shane realizes he likes Ryan exactly the way he is: alive.

Rated: T

Commentary: Oh, this gave me the creeps. Shane is fucking scary, man, and the whole scenary, the moment when everything happens, I just– wow. This one’s good.

The Lengths He Will Go by Boy_Obsessed_With_Bands

Summary: Every once in a while, Shane Madej comes strolling home with blood on his hands and clothes.Each of those nights, Ryan helps clean up the evidence. Erasing all evidence of Shane's most recent victim.Everything was going smoothly until Zach beat them to their house.

Commentary: In this one, Ryan is Shane’s keeper. He’ll do anything for this man he so much loves, and that includes, becoming like him. It’s a good writing, an interesting one-- but someone from BuzzFeed that we love dies.

Commentary: We are in smut territory now. This one is FUCKED UP, like– all of these are fucked, alright, but this one is just… oh holy shit. Ryan, uuuuh, gets off Shane coming to him every time he kills someone. But I like it. Another take on the “don’t call me baby” comment.

Commentary: When we got the character Banjo McClintock, millions of interpretations started to appear. And while we do know the one most used in the fandom, this one is kinda one of my favorites-- in which Shane prepares himself to be Banjo.

Summary: “Ryan.” Shane breaks off and sits down again, slides his chair closer to Ryan’s, stares him down. “God, fuck, look at me, okay, I did this. I did this, this is my case, this is mine, everything you’re talking about—”

Ryan can’t help it: he laughs. It comes out a little anxiously, but it’s a laugh all the same, because Shane can’t really expect him to buy into this, right?

And Shane looks—well, murderous is either the wrong word or the right one.

“I’m not kidding.”

“You really want me to believe—”

“You entertain all possible theories, right?” Shane says, exasperated and angry, and Ryan notices it’s the first time he’s ever said that seriously. “That’s what this stupid show is—that’s what you do.So entertain this one.”

All at once, it stops being funny. Something the size of a golf ball seems to lodge itself high in Ryan’s throat. He realizes it’s alarm, fear, a caged bird thrashing against the bars inside himself. He’s waiting for Shane to break, to burst into laughter, to say it’s all a stupid joke, but it doesn’t happen.

“What the fuck,” he croaks out.

Rated: M

Commentary: In this one, Shane is #offended that Ryan thinks he is an amateour in the Art of Killing, and also does the horrible, terrible pun of “Cereal Killer” as he eats Ryan’s cereal. It’s fantastic.

Summary: It’s been a few months since Shane learned about Ryan’s extracurricular activities, and tonight he wants to do it.

Rated: M

Commentary: Part of one of my favorite series in the fandom, in this one, Shane becomes what Ryan is and deepens the plot of said series. It’s very graphic, and weirdly artistic.

trevor and alfredo who play this up with unbridled joy. they’ll wear the same outfits. someone will call one of their names and the other will answer. sometimes even the crew gets tripped up.

geoff has to do post-heist headcounts twice, never implicitly sure whether he counted two heads or the same one twice.

there’s a murmur of a rumor on the streets about a guy in the fake ah crew who moves so fast it’s like he’s in two places at once. trevor and alfredo hear about it and grin in unsettling tandem.

three favorite fic writers are (in No Order Whatsoever); anarchetypal (same username on tumblr), sunlaceandpaperflowers (glimmerkeith on tumblr), and adenophora (i don’t know if they have a tumblr acct.) these are just a few ppl i’m subscribed to on ao3, there are so many more fic writers that i love

7. early influences on your writing

this is a really interesting question! i can’t pinpoint specific books or authors since i don’t really remember what i read when i was a kid, but mystery/thrillers really got me hooked. the detective genre, yknow? like. those stand out to me.

also just fantasy in general, i believe. tuck everlasting was a book we had to read in mmmiddle school? elementary? idk what that class would be categorized by american standards. that, and i don’t remember what grade i was in when we read it

12. favorite place to write

i know there’s supposed to be like a Space in your room or somewhere in your house where you’re supposed to write, to keep yr mind focused n all that shit, but i just write from my bed tbh kdfjgdf i can’t…write anywhere else, since i’d be too worried about someone peeking at what i’m writing

write. i swear to god, just write. the idea alone is scary enough, but once you let yourself fuck around and just write down whatever ideas you’ve got, it all comes back. it gets so much easier. writing is fun, don’t forget that.

make time to write for yourself, too. don’t write because someone wants or tells you to (within reason); if you need a break, take a break. don’t overwhelm yourself. writing is supposed to be fun and if you aren’t having fun, take a step back and think about why that may be
