They’re on a hunt when it happens. It’s something so innocuous Cas doesn’t think about the action until they’re driving home. They’d pursued their monster-of-the-week and run into another hunter who claimed they were an old friend of John Winchester.
It took too long for them to realise the hunter was the one behind the killings, acting as a go-between, doing some dirty work for Hell. They found themselves cornered in the man’s yard, trapped and backed into a corner with a not-so-friendly looking hunting dog standing between them, and the high fence, their only exit. Cas’ grace was failing, so he was unsure if he could get himself and the Winchester brothers out of the mess unscathed.
Cas knew many things about Dean Winchester, he knew he wasn’t cruel for the sake of cruelty but he also knew any man with a gun in his hand, who found themselves backed into a corner would be tempted to fire. It wasn’t often Dean surprised Cas, but that day he did. He held his hands out in front of himself, open-palmed and moved slowly to greet the animal. Its pinned ears and raised haunches kept Dean several arms lengths away, but they stood facing each other until the animal calmed.  When it did, Dean touched the creature softly and ushered both Cas and Sam out. By the look on Sam’s face, Cas understood he’d also been surprised Dean’s plan had worked.
It isn’t until they’ve caught the hunter and driven back to the bunker and Sam had retired to his room that Cas decided to broach the subject.
“How did you know the dog wouldn’t attack you?”
“Call it a hunch,” Dean replied trying to minimise whatever had occurred, letting Cas know he was touching on something important.
Something Dean didn’t want to talk about, was usually the exact thing he needed to talk about. Cas isn’t sure how he manages it, but after a few prolonged glances and a long stretch of silence, Dean speaks.
“It’s a hunting dog, Cas. Course it’s going to attack you if it’s been told to. I know they’re dangerous, I ain’t stupid. But you sit with the thing for a while, show it you can trust it,  and maybe it starts to get iffy. Thing doesn’t like to fight, it just does what it’s told. You pet it and confuse the hell out of it. Hunters want the things to be tough, so they never touch ‘em gently. Think it’ll make ‘em soft.” Cas understands.  Dean is the dog.
Cas wonders if he’s ever been touched gently. He decides it’s his job to make sure Dean is.
He spots a few scratches and bruises littering Dean’s body from the aftermath of the hunt and pulls him into the kitchen, trying to get a better look at him. He reaches out a hand to heal Dean but the man shrugs him off, making an excuse about not wanting Cas to waste his grace. That won’t do. Cas needs to show Dean that people can be gentle with him.
That’s how the two end up knee to knee at their unconventional version of a dining room table, with Cas helping to cradle a packet of frozen peas to Dean’s face. Cas tentatively strokes a thumb over the underside of Dean’s eyes, along his cheekbones. No one taught Cas how to be gentle, so he’s unsure if he’s doing it right, but from Dean’s stunned silence he thinks perhaps he is.
In the following days, Cas grabs every opportunity he can to touch Dean softly. He shocks Dean speechless as midway through a conversation Cas moves forward and gently brushes a strand of hair to the side, that had fallen into Dean’s eyes. When he needs to move past Dean he places a soft but firm hand in the middle of his back. He even throws a blanket over Dean’s shoulders on a partially cold morning.
When he begins to run out of ways to be gentle he finds another, one that even Cas knows is toeing the line of things he can get away with.
“Night, sunshine. I’m hitting the hay,” Dean grumbles, rising from his seat beside Cas in his ‘Dean Cave’ as the movie they were watching comes to a close.
Cas stands with him before he can talk himself out of it and cautiously, places a kiss to Dean’s cheek. He lets it linger before pulling and mumbles,
“Goodnight, Dean.”
Dean doesn’t say anything, doesn’t do anything. He raises a hand to his cheek, as though to capture the heat of Cas’ lips and stares at him with wide-eyed amazement. And once more Cas sees the same look of frozen and confused horror as the dog. So it was true. Dean wasn’t used to being treated with such fondness. Cas would have to change that.

Don't grieve in front of me, Dean. It makes me uncomfortable, part II...or prequel?
How'd I get here again?
Oh, yeah. I got here, because I got excited about the cars. I remembered Dean driving a brownish tan/brown car in THE SCENE from Slash Fiction? Pinto, I wondered. FORD?
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Alas. It's a Pontiac Acadian. I was so hopeful. It's a VERY similar style though. But it definitely calls to mind the car when Cas n' Dean presided over Mary's loss of John in 4x03. It looks like the car on the beach in 13x01, when Dean is grieving Cas. And this...is 7x06, when Dean is ALSO grieving Cas.
It's also VERY interesting how the break light's out on the driver's side. That's because Dean is out of commission. In SPN, often the headlights or the break lights show which brother is "down for the count." At the end of season 1, ep 1, it's Sam who's down-and-out, because he lost Jess.
Here, it's Dean. He "appears" on, but the break light shows us the truth.
We cut from the "out break light" to...THE winged Pony, hanged. The pony is the light. It's yellow. It's the sunshine. Because the light is out.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
It's winged. It's in the rearview. it's noosed around the neck, like how Cas said that freewill is something you hang yourself with. He cuts it off and throw it into the backseat, desperate to forget. Cause it's Caaa---
Anyway. You could argue Dean is lamenting the life he'd left behind, but the Lisa-Ben dynamic was Dean's Ford Truck phase, and this winged thing is-- it's just-- it's just 100% pointing to Cas. If you don't think so, the next bit is damning.
Sam turns on the radio to make Dean feel better. A sad song comes on, and Dean drops the act for a MILLISECOND. And Sam? He says SORRY.
Then, he gets uncomfortable.
It's the earlier match to the peanut-butter-and-jelly-strong-choice scene from season 13x06 (widow era).
Sam is afraid of this kind of grief. (And for good reason. Thanks, John!)
"What would you say if I called on you now..." is the first line. Come when you call, etc etc etc. And Dean looks just about ready to burst into tears. No, watch the scene. He looks devastated when he hears it and realizes what it is, like a little intake of breath.
Dean grieves Cas...with music.
Tumblr media
Ah, the familiar pattern. Dean is struggling to be allowed to grieve in this season. Everyone's terrified of his grief, even Bobby, who demands he "not be a person" and "keep doing the job" in a desperate plea to keep Dean from "dying before he does." Bobby doesn't know what to say or how to grieve, so he tries to keep Dean alive the only way he can think of, with utilitarian pragmatism.
But Dean needs to feel his emotions. Even though the scene above is played for laughs, it's really about Dean's emotions leaking out despite his attempts to hide it.
Tumblr media
Ahem. Not writing Dean-Cas till "later seasons," my ass. Dean wore his heart on his sleeve whenever he was "allowed" to. My gosh!

Someday I'll do a thing about all the car-hopping they have to do until, you know, Dean is "Dean" again.
Dean, going through the motions, "acting like one of the dead ones." And...the Impala makes a return once Dean accepts that Cas can't help, and then Cas says he's gonna go with to try and mitigate the wreckage he left.
Cas agreed to try and "fix" things, just as Dean accepted their brokenness. (No ones cares if you're broken so long as you try.)
And the we see Baby again for the first time. Hmmmm.

Destiel fic recs
Well, it looks like the brainrot is permanent and there is no cure. I can't seem to get enough of these dudes. Please enjoy the fruits of my unending obsession with another rec list.
Love Bites by @malmuses (Explicit, 34k)
I don't know why I love a tiny creature Dean, but this fic had my entire heart from the first chapter. Not since OctopusDean said bloop has a Dean been this adorable.
Dean, a vampire in bat form, gets injured by Cas' menace of a cat (affectionate). Cas nurses him back to health and, as Dean heals, he finds himself more and more enamored with his savior.
Cas is delightfully awkward and Dean is entirely smitten and it makes for an adorably soft dynamic. Plus I want to put bat!Dean in my pocket. He’s so cute.
Boyfriend of Thursday by mnwood @deancasheadcanons (Explicit, 40k)
Look all I'm saying is Dean deserved to be a little slutty (affectionate). This one is a romp and a delight. Dean Winchester doesn't do monogamy or commitment. Instead he has a regular hook-up every day of the week.
But when he and his Thursday call it quits, he's looking to fill the open position. It feels like he's in luck when he runs into a hot dude at Chipotle. But Dean discovers that maybe his Boyfriend of Thursday is worth breaking the rules for.
I love an openly bi, confident Dean and this Dean definitely fits the bill. This Dean is really fun and in some ways very vulnerable and he is deeply respectful of his hookups which makes it a great read. This one could have gone the other way, making him shallow and capricious, but despite his rules and his rigid system, Dean deeply cares and that makes it really fun to read.
The side characters are fantastic, plus there is positive representation of polyamory and some really interesting casting that makes this one super entertaining.
Passing Ships by quiettewandering (Mature, 78k)
Something about Dean and Cas going against fate to be with one another has always made me a little feral, so it's no surprise that a fic based on the concept that Cas, a cupid assigned to get Dean together with his soulmate Lisa, fails spectacularly when he falls in love with Dean himself would immediately draw me in.
The Cas in this fic wants so badly to do what's right, but he can't help but care about the humans. He hits all the right notes for me and i had at least ten breakdowns over him. And Dean is also just so enamored and such a disaster and you just wanna smoosh their faces.
I Can See Your Halo by redamber79 @imbiowaresbitch (series, 2 works, Explicit, 9.8k words)
This one is s-p-i-c-y and just a bit sacrilegious in the best way. Um, let's just say the author explores some novel uses for the angel blade and Cas' halo that will live inside my brain rent free for a very long time. Ahem
It also serves as a fairly delightful fix-it with a really fun resolution that will also have a condo in my mind.
It's scorching hot and a really fun read.
In It For The Long Haul by @ltleflrt (Explicit 25k)
This is the fluffiest, softest fic to soothe what ails you. Dean, a long-haul trucker, meets an intriguing waiter at a truck stop and starts reordering his life to find ways to see him again.
This fic is just pure sunshine. Cas keeps choosing meals to make Dean happy. Dean keeps blushing and flirting. The angst is low. It's really just a good time for everyone. A soft story about liminal spaces and finding someone to share your life with.
Racing Stripes by tiamatv (Mature, 37k)
I'm admittedly a sucker for a sci fi AU, but even if I wasn't I would still love this absolute gem of a story. Dean is one of the top racers in the world, finally about to live out his dream of racing in the difficult and high stakes Chicago Race. Unfortunately for him, revisiting Chicago also sets him on a crash course with the love of his life, Cas, who left him years ago for the promise of an education and a future, and even worse, Cas' dad who is dangling the same for Sammy in front of Dean’s nose.
The worldbuilding in this fic is immaculate. An abandoned and rotting Chicago is almost it's own character, and there is a quiet desperation in the story of people who have become beholden to corporations to survive. The action sequences are also gorgeous with the pivotal race being so cinematic I felt like I could see every twist and turn. And don't get me started on the gorgeous weaving of canon into the fic. It was so clever.
But the standout for me is the gentleness in Dean’s characterization. The way he wants so badly to do what's best. The way he longs for Cas. There is just something gorgeous about Racing Stripes Dean that made me want everything good for him.
Listen, I tell you a mystery by bathilda bagshot (wellthengameover) @the-lions-mouth (Teen, 25k)
Thee Dean and Mary parallel dissertation, this character study has everything. Mary trying to conform to cisheteronormative ideals while feeling the pull of hunting and a particular redheaded angel. Teenage and Stanford Era Dean to tear your heart out. Dean and Mary finding something of each other. And a happy ending for Dean and Cas.
It's told in snippets. Vignettes that delve into trauma and hope. They build an absolutely beautiful parallel story, gorgeous for their intersections and the places they diverge.
And there is a gentleness to it all. We see Mary and Dean in various states of distress and desperation. We see the effects of the cupids bow and poverty and loneliness and completely fuckery. But there is never any judgment, just kindness in the way they are written.
This one made me cry real human tears and it's definitely one that will haunt me.
A Judicious Application of Free Will by Annie D (scaramouche) @no-gorms (Explicit, 57k)
This is an older fic, but I swear Annie D has such a good grasp on Dean and Cas (or is possibly psychic) that there are elements that will make you swear it was written post canon. This one is hard to describe because it ends up with some gorgeous narrative twists that I don't want to give away. Suffice to say: Dean meets a handsome recluse, Cas, whose past threatens to engulf them.
It's twisty and ambitious, with so much heart. Canon is woven in to the story in unexpected ways and it's ultimately one of those fics that you don't want to put down.

Dean loves loves loves little terms of endearment for Cas. He uses sweetheart on the daily, darling when he’s flirting, handsome when he’s flirting with intent, sunshine when the angel is particularly grumpy, and answers yes dear whenever Cas calls for him.
The thing is, Cas doesn’t use nicknames for Dean. Like at all. Ever. And if Dean is being honest, which he’s trying to be more of, he’s a bit irked.
It’s always Dean. Dean Dean Dean Dean Dean. Dean. Dean.
“Like what the hell Cas, am I not your love? Your honey, your sweetie pie, not even your snookums?” Dean asks while laying in bed next to his husband, fiddling with the ring on his hand that represents a promise, trying to remind himself he is all those things to Cas and so much more.
“This has been troubling you,” Cas states, looking away from his book and squinting at Dean.
Dean just shrugs, not knowing what else to say.
Cas sighs, bookmarking his page before sliding down the bed and turning to his side to face Dean, who is resolutely staring at the ceiling.
“Dean, look at me.”
Green eyes meet blue.
“You are all those things to me. You’re my love, my honey, my sweetie pie, even my snookums.”
Dean lets out a huff of laughter at the word snookums coming out in the angel’s gravelly voice.
A soft smile graces Cas’ lips. “You’re also my happiness. You’re the ocean I willing drown myself in, the sun I would graciously let melt my wings. You are Dean, the only being in the universe that has ever wavered my devotion to the lord Himself; you are the human who set me free.”
Overwhelmed, tears have begun to well up in Dean’s eyes. Cas catches them before they fall with a brush of his thumb as he cradles Dean’s face and pulls him closer.
“Dean, you are everything. You have rebuilt me in a manner similar to how I once rebuilt you. I am who I am because you are who you are, Dean. Across all the languages in all the cosmos, there is no other word that holds the weight of who you are to me than your name and all it encompasses, all other words pale in comparison.”
Dean’s eyes haven’t left Cas’ and the sincerity in his gazed coupled with what he’s saying has Dean feeling warm and so utterly loved in a way no nickname ever could.
“And you don’t get words wrong sweetheart,” Dean states, voice heavy with emotion.
A gummy smile. “Exactly, Dean. I don’t get words wrong.”

The Plan
Relationship: Dean Winchester/Castiel
Summary: Cas has been his best friend since they were eight. But now they're both applying for universities and Dean is more anxious than he wants to admit.
Tags: fluff, first kiss, self-esteem issues
"If you get accepted to all of them, which one are you gonna pick?"
"I dunno, Sammy!" Dean snaps, closing the book in front of him with more force than necessary. The pencil that Dean had been anxiously chewing on just seconds ago rolls off the desk with the vibration, and lands on the hardwood floors with a clack.
"I'm so sick of everyone pressuring me for answers!"
"Dude... it was just a question..."
His baby brother is getting bigger and bigger. He's nearly Dean's size now and shows no signs of stopping his growth spurt. But in moments like these Sammy can still pull off a face that reminds Dean that he's just a gangly 14 year old kid - with huge puppy eyes and a sad retriever look. Dean would calm down and apologize for snapping if he wasn't so riled up:
"Not when you're the third person asking me that today. Just lay off my back already!"
Sam raises his brows high, and his lips quirk in the way they do when he's preparing a comeback.
"Touchy~~"
"Bitch."
"Moooooom, Dean called me a bitch..."
"You-"
Mary's voice reaches in from the hallway almost instantly: "Dean, language!!"
Sam sticks his tongue out, grins triumphantly, and then whispers "jerk" before running back to his room.
Freaking Sammy...
"At the risk of being the fourth to ask..."
His best friend speaks up from behind him, letting the sentence linger in the air unfinished. Dean turns around in his chair to see Cas sprawled across his bed, calmly observing him. He has a book open in front of him, but it's upside down so Dean's pretty sure he wasn't really studying.
"I do wonder the same, Dean."
"Not you too, man."
"I'm just curious."
"Look... I don't know, Cas."
Dean sighs, and finally decides to give up on studying, since his mind is too far gone.
His room is not so big, so when he stretches his leg, it actually reaches the bed. He uses this fact to his advantage, one foot pushing insistently at Castiel's thigh in a silent demand for him to move. It works, effectively making his best friend sit up and scooch over enough so that Dean can also sit down on the cushy mattress.
Even though there was more than enough space to leave a few inches between them, they end up squished right against each other. But Cas doesn't complain, so Dean lets his head drop onto his best friend's shoulder, and closes his eyes for a brief moment, trying to chase away the worry bubbling inside. His brain keeps racing around, thinking about the future and how everything seems so scary and uncertain. He still feels like a kid but he has to make all these grown up decisions and move away from everyone he loves.
It doesn't really seem fair.
"Can't I just stay here forever?"
Although Cas doesn't answer, he reaches out, sensing Dean's distress. His hand finds Dean's nape, and starts stroking tenderly along Dean's spine, soothing all the muscles down its path. Dean just leans into the touch and sighs again, now a happier sound.
Cas has a way of always feeling like sunshine, peeking through even on the cloudiest days. Dean basks in the attention, and lets go of the worries for a moment, just focusing on the warmth of Castiel's hand, and the way Cas' breath ghosts against his hair. He thinks he feels Castiel kissing the top of his head, a feathery touch, barely there - but maybe he was just imagining it. After a few moments of silence, Dean finally allows himself to ask:
"What 'bout you, Cas? You never told me which university you decided on."
The soothing hand leaves Dean's back and he instantly misses the contact. Cas stares at him silently, and it's only when Dean rights himself up and looks back, raising a brow in question that Cas replies, with a mysterious finality to his tone.
"I don't know yet."
"What? Really? You don't know?"
Cas simply shrugs. He's suddenly very interested in the book in front of him - it seems he finally notices that it is upside down and his hands fumble to turn it around.
"Oh..." Dean is surprised, to say the least.
His best friend is always so sure of himself, so certain of the path that has to be taken to succeed in life. When they started highschool Cas had already picked all his classes before Dean could even decide on one. So Dean wasn't expecting an 'I don't know'. If anything, Dean was expecting a bullet list of next steps and timelines to achieve his life goals or something geeky like that.
"Ok," Dean mumbles out, slightly dazed, before turning even more interested. He can't believe he never asked:
"Huh... which universities did you apply to?"
Blue eyes snap back up, meeting his.
There's a weird sort of tension in the air until Cas finally answers.
"MIT, Caltech and KU."
"What?! Are you serious?"
Dean turns to face Cas fully, the ecstasy obvious in his eyes. He grabs Castiel's knees and squeezes.
"Those are exactly the same ones I applied to! Dudeeee, that's such a coincidence - it would be awesome if we ended up in the same one!"
Dean rambles excitedly, not noticing the calculated gaze on his best friend's eyes.
"This is the best news I've heard all year, Cas - I freaking LOVE you!"
He throws his arm around Cas, squishing him tight and kissing his cheek like crazy, forgetting that wasn't a normal thing best friends do.
"And with your big brain I'm sure you are gonna get into all of them, Cas!"
Cas huffs out a small laugh, his eyes crinkling softly at Dean's excitement. But his smile fades away when Dean's face darkens. He slowly releases his grip on Cas, and Cas knows what's coming before Dean even starts.
"Me, on the other hand... I mean... what if I don't get into any of them?"
"Dean."
Cas sounds tired beyond his years, as if he hasn't just turned 18, but instead has lived centuries watching the Earth turn on its axis.
"Dean, look at me."
Dean complies, though he's not sure why. Emboldened, Cas barrels on, confident and unwavering:
"You're one of the brightest people I have ever known."
"No, I'm not," Dean scoffs.
Cas squints, and his head tilts.
"You do realize that your GPA disagrees?"
"You're one to talk, Cas... you have 5.0 GPA! And I'm pretty sure the only reason you don't have higher is because you were afraid the teachers thought it was too good to be true."
"I like Advanced Placement classes..."
"Yeah, well. You're basically a superhuman genius or something."
"Hmm... in that case perhaps you should listen to me when I say you'll get into all of the universities you applied to."
Dean rolls his eyes, but Cas persists:
"My GPA is not the point, Dean. I'm not the one who secretly thinks I'm dumb, despite being elected Valedictorian and having the second highest GPA in our entire school, and likely one of the highest in the country for our year."
"I was only chosen as Valedictorian cus everyone knows you suck at speeches, Cas! You'd probably just get up there and give a one-liner about how 'we're all people trying their best in a world where it's easy to do your worst' and then end with a weird goat joke that no one gets."
"That was my speech in middle school."
"Exactly!"
"The joke just didn't translate well. It was funnier in the original language."
Dean roars with laughter, and then slaps Cas in the back.
"And that is why I am Valedictorian, buddy."
Cas looks slightly uncomfortable, but it just makes Dean laugh harder. He's clearly imagining a myriad of terrible speeches that some imaginary Castiel would do. When he finally comes down from his high, he wipes the corner of his eyes, and shakes his head.
"Man... I'm gonna miss you too much if we don't end up in the same uni..."
Cas awkwardly looks away.
"Why didn't you pick one yet anyway? Knowing you, I thought you already had a whole grand plan in mind," Dean pries, curious. Cas remains quiet, staring a hole into a spot on the wall. Dean can tell when his best friend is holding something back. Dean bumps his knee against him, and insists.
"What is it, Cas?"
Cas chances a look, and quickly caves in as soon as he sees the bright green eyes staring up at him.
"I'm waiting."
"Really? What for?"
Cas looks away again, cheeks slightly tinged in pink. If Dean didn't know him so well, he would say Cas was embarrassed. But Cas was never embarrassed, so he must be imagining it. When Cas seems to stall, Dean pushes again.
"What are you waiting for, buddy?"
"You didn't pick yet."
"Ok..."
Dean scrunches his nose.
"What does that have to do with it?"
Cas looks back at him, annoyed.
"What?"
"You didn't pick yet," Cas repeats slowly, as if somehow that explains everything. Dean just makes another face, even more confused.
"So what? It's not like you're planning to follow me into whatever university I-"
Cas looks at him meaningfully.
Wait. What?
Dean can feel himself turn red and redder, all the way up to his ears. No. No way. Was Cas really waiting for him to choose just so he could go to the same one???
"Yes, so..." Cas confirms his unspoken question, closing the book in front of him, "please hurry up, Dean. Your indecision is interfering with my plan."
"Your... plan?"
And that's when Cas pulls out a bullet list of his life goals - Dean was right, he does have one - and hands it over.
"I was supposed to be at step number 7 already, which is getting an apartment for us near the campus. But if you don't pick a university I can't start on that one."
"Cas."
"Yes?"
"Did you seriously put 'Marry Dean Winchester' as bullet point number 20?"
"Well, 18 is too early, and 22 seems too late. I think bullet point 20 is the perfect balance."
"Cas..."
"Yes?"
"We're not even dating yet."
"Of course not," Cas says with some exasperation, pointing at number 10 on the list, "that's only after step 8 and 9, Dean, since we will be much more emotionally mature."
Dean smiles, a silly, huge grin and shakes his head. Well, he was never one to follow grand plans and by led by other people's rules so he cradles Cas' face between his palms, leans in and kisses that stupid look off of his best friend's face.
Cas squirms under him, a delightful surprised hitch leaving his mouth, but ends up clinging to his leather jacket like there's no tomorrow. When Dean finally pulls away he marvels at his best friend's spit-slick lips, and the way that dark hair got all ruffled up, making Cas impossibly sexier.
"So," Dean chirps cheerfully, the future suddenly seeming much more exciting.
"Which university are we going to?"
Cas doesn't answer, just pulls him back in for another kiss, and then another. They only stop to come up for air, and even then they're both smiling wide, breaths ragged and hearts beating fast.
"What about th-"
Oh god,
Cas started kissing up his jaw, and somehow Dean's jacket found its way the floor.
"-C-Cas, w-wha- t-the plan?"
"Mmm," Cas mumbles between kisses, and then his tongue darts out to lick a line behind Dean's ear, making Dean shiver and fall apart with a whimper.
"Changed my mind."
"Hell yea-"
"Boys."
The voice suddenly startles them both apart, and they turn at the speed of light to find Mary Winchester at the entrance of Dean's bedroom, staring past the -very open- door. Dean can't believe he was this freaking stupid, and he can feel his heart hammer anxiously in his chest.
"Mom, it's - it's not what it looks like-"
Mary rolls her eyes.
"Oh really? 'Cus it looks like you knuckleheads finally realized you're made for each other. I could power a town with the stares you two have been throwing at each other for the last ten years."
"M-mom," Dean mumbles.
"Now, hands off each other and come help me with dinner. I think I burned the rice again..."
---
"MIT."
Dean blurs out right in the middle of dinner. All the eyes lift off of busy plates full of food, staring up at him, waiting for more explanation. Dean squeezes Cas' hand a bit tighter below the table before clearing his throat and trying again:
"We decided on MIT."
His family cheers, rushing to congratulate him. Sammy however, asks all too eagerly:
"We? Are you both going to the same one?"
Dean blushes, suddenly nervous, "y-yeah."
John groans, making Dean practically jump out of his skin, heart hammering on his chest. But then his little brother's voice raises over the sound:
"Called it," Sammy announces, and shoves an open palm in front of their father, "pay up old man!"
John reluctantly pulls out 50 dollars, just as Mary smacks both of them on the back of their heads, clearly displeased with whatever just transpired.
Dean stares at his father like he just grew an extra head but John just slowly chews at his food, and doesn't provide any additional explanation.
"I'm happy to hear that, baby," Mary says gently, looking genuinely pleased. She proceeds to elbow John, and the man finally seems to realize he should say something.
"Yeah. Good for you, son. You take good care of each other, you hear? Keep your noses outta trouble."
Dean blushes and nods furiously, the words of his father always his gospel.
Cas, in the meantime, is far too focused on scribbling all over his (now slightly crumpled) piece of paper. It seems 'Marry Dean Winchester' is now circled extra hard, and has been moved up a few steps on The Plan.
Dean ducks his head and smiles, shy and proud. Yep, it's still gonna be scary moving away from his mom and dad and he's gonna miss the hell out of his lil brother.
But he's got Cas.
Whatever happens, they're gonna be alright.

Suptober 2022 Day 17 - Muse
Destiel, Short fic, 1,315 words, Fluff, Songfic
Things are a bit awkward for Cas as he tries to resettle in the bunker after coming back from the empty.
Under the cut or on Ao3
Muse
Cas had been back from the empty for nearly a month, but he just couldn’t seem to settle in. Things had been good… quiet. Monster activity had been way down since Chuck was no longer around to stir the pot for more interesting storylines.
Sam was settling gratefully into a more advisory role for the hunting community at large, helping Garth coordinate hunters and take calls when necessary.
And Dean…
Cas sighed.
In some ways, Dean was just the same as he'd always been… In some ways, he'd never been further away.
Every morning, Cas would stumble bleary-eyed and yawning, into the kitchen to find Dean cooking breakfast. Dean would say, "Mornin', Sunshine" and hand him a mug of coffee with cream and two sugars, just the way he liked it. Sam would come back from his morning jog and the three of them would chat about whatever hunt was most interesting or any lore on which he needed their input. Jack would even pop down from heaven occasionally, not to interfere, but just to visit.
There was just something… off between Cas and Dean. Cas had never expected to come back after his confession, of course. He also knew that there was slim chance that Dean would be interested in talking about it. So it hung in the air between them, not heavy, per se, just there , always.
Cas tried to tell himself that it was fine. At least Dean hadn’t pushed him away or kicked him out of the bunker. Some days Dean would even seek Cas’ company out, just two days ago he had padded into the library and settled into one of the reading chairs with his latest Vonnegut book while Cas researched at the table.
It should be fine, peaceful even. This was really the best possible outcome that Cas could have ever hoped for, but… they weren’t talking. Not like they used to.
They used to sit together and tell each other everything, all their frustrations, all their fears, and now… now they talked about mundane things like the weather and which show to binge-watch next.
Dean had also started disappearing in the middle of the afternoon. For the last two weeks, he’d vanished into the bowels of the bunker for hours at a time. The first time Cas had noticed it, he’d gone looking for Dean in his room but found it empty. He checked the kitchen, the garage, and even down in the dungeon, but Dean was nowhere to be found.
When Dean had reappeared, Cas had asked as casually as he could where Dean had been. Dean had brushed the question off and changed the subject.
Was Cas fooling himself? Was Dean actually uncomfortable with Cas and just waiting for Cas to take the hint and leave?
One way or the other, Cas was at a breaking point. Given the choice, he would stay by Dean’s side for the rest of eternity, but he wasn’t sure how much more of this artificial distance he could take.
He missed his friend.
Cas sighed and tried to refocus on… whatever movie was playing on the screen of his laptop as he sat alone in his room.
A tentative knock on his door pulled him out of his morose thoughts. He paused the video and called, “Come in.”
Dean opened the door, then stood on the threshold, eyes darting around the room as he shuffled from one foot to the other.
Cas’ stomach sank. He had been fooling himself; Dean wasn’t comfortable, in fact, he looked more nervous than Cas had ever seen him. A poisonous voice in the back of Cas’ mind hissed, Here it comes. The talk. We can’t be friends anymore, Cas. I tried, but I just can’t do it. You have to leave…
Cas shook his head and blinked, trying to dislodge the thought and refocus on the present.
Dean cleared his throat and rubbed a hand over the back of his neck before stumbling out, “Hey, Cas, would you… I need to… Can I show you something?”
Cas felt his head tilt to the side. That had not been anywhere near what he’d expected to come out of Dean’s mouth. He nodded and followed Dean down the hallway toward the— shooting range?
Two folding chairs sat inside the sound-proofed space, one of them holding an acoustic guitar. Cas frowned and turned to Dean, who motioned him wordlessly into the unoccupied chair.
Dean picked up the guitar and settled into the other chair, his eyes firmly fixed on the frets as he fitted his fingers to the strings. He strummed once, then stopped to rub his hands on his jeans with a wince.
He started to play again, and Cas thought that he recognized the tune…
Every question, every thought in Cas’ mind fled as Dean began to sing, his voice quiet and unsure as his fingers clumsily picked over the strings.
You fill up my senses, Like a night in a forest, Like the mountains in springtime, Like a walk in the rain, Like a storm in the desert, Like a sleepy blue ocean. You fill up my senses, Come fill me again.
Cas stared at Dean in awe as Dean hesitated, then started humming the next part of the song.
He knew that he shouldn’t read too much into this. Dean had clearly taken up the guitar again and just wanted to show Cas what he’d been working on. Cas had even mentioned liking this particular song years ago when it had come on the radio. Dean didn’t… he couldn’t mean…
Dean reached the end of the hummed verse and his fingers were surer on the frets now, his shoulders more relaxed. He finally looked up at Cas, his eyes shining with so much emotion that Cas’ breath stuck fast in his lungs. Dean’s voice came out strong and clear as he sang:
Come, let me love you, Let me give my life to you, Let me drown in your laughter, Let me die in your arms, Let me lay down beside you, Let me always be with you, Come, let me love you, Come love me again.
Dean strummed the last few notes and all the brightness of his soul shone in his eyes as he smiled softly at Cas.
Cas wanted to laugh, to cry, to scream, to dance, to kiss Dean until neither of them could see straight. Instead, he sat frozen, not daring to breathe for fear that he would shatter this dream and wake up cold and alone once again.
Dean said, “Um, you know I’m not good with all this…” He trailed off and gestured in a way that seemed to encompass the both of them. “I, um, I know it’s not as good as… you made such a beautiful speech and I… I just wanted to do something, I dunno, kinda big and…” Dean trailed off again as his face fell. “This was dumb wasn’t it?”
Cas shook his head so hard, his neck hurt as his breath left him on a sob. Tears streamed down his face as he choked out, “You… I never… You didn’t have to…”
“Shit,” Dean said, his eyes going wide as he jumped out of his seat and rushed to Cas’ side. “Don’t cry, I’m sorry. You don’t… We can just pretend that this never happened—”
“No!” Cas shouted, his voice echoing in the large room.
Dean froze where he was stooped over Cas’ chair, his eyebrows furrowed and mouth hanging open.
Cas grabbed Dean’s shoulders and growled, “Dean Winchester, this is the nicest, sweetest, most loving thing that anyone has ever done for me, and I will cherish this memory for the rest of time.”
Cas took a moment to relish in the adorable shade of pink that suffused Dean’s face before he pulled him in and kissed him.

A Winchester’s Daughter 2/?
THIS IS A SUPERNATURAL X OC X B99 TIE-IN
Maya is a 17 year old cop who is on the hunt for the dad, only, when she finds him, she also finds out the world in which he comes from.
Tumblr media
The moment Maya landed back home, all she wanted to do was sleep. But, of course, the universe hated her.
She must have only been down an hour or so when, from the living room, she heard a crashing noise before the sound of apologies.
Even without the voice, Maya knew this wasn't Daisy coming in late at night after spending her free time at the bar with the rest of her colleuges - it being Saturday night and all. Usually when Daisy came in, the sound of stumbling came first from the door, the keys being thrown on the counter top before she made her way through the kitchen and down the hall towards her bedroom.
But this stranger did the opposite.
The noises began from the kitchen before they made their way around the counter, bumping into the coffee table in the living room and scrambling around for...something.
So, with a groan, Maya pulled her gun from her safe and made her way from her bedroom and into the living room/kitchen area. This was where she found the stranger stood by her window trying to force it open...from the inside?
"Freeze!"
The stranger's hands flew up into the air as they dropped the sash window shut. "Wait! Wait! Please - Please don't shoot. They-They wouldn't work anyway. But, please. Don't shoot."
"Jack?"
"Guilty." Jack smiled sheepishly.
Maya, to be honest, was more confused than usual. "What are you-?" But then she got to the window and found Dean and Sam crouched on the fire escape. "Oh, that's why."
Sighing, Maya clicked her safety on and lifted up the window from which she had to watch the two brothers struggle to climb inside since they were basically 4 times the length of the window.
"I could have shot you." Maya commented with annoyance and tiredness clear in her voice.
"Not if they're not angel-"
"Killing bullets, yeah, I know." Maya sighed. "Must have left them in my other pants. What are you doing here?"
And then there was a knock at her front door.
"That'll be Cas." Dean told her.
Maya looked between the three of them, rolling her eyes before moving to the door and opening it up.
"I told them we should have called first."
Maya nodded sleepily. "Thanks, Cas. And, he's right. You should have."
"We did." Dean told her. "You didn't pick up."
Maya stared at him with blank annoyance, thinking why she wouldn't have picked up. And then it hit her. "Gina."
"What?"
Maya shook her head. "Doesn't matter." It was the only thing Maya could think to tell them rather than explain the whole business behind the halloween heists that happen every year.
"Well, why didn't you use the stairs, like Cas?"
"We rang the bell, like, a billion times."
"It was 10."
Dean rolled his eyes. "Same thing."
"Well...if you guys are tired, Daisy's gone for the weekend so someone can use the spare bed in her office and there's a pull-out in the sofa. I'll see you in the morning."
Maya took her gun with her and placed it back in her safe before belly flopping onto her bed and practically falling fast asleep but she did manage to catch the last few words of Sam and Cas.
"Not only does she look like him, she sleeps like him, too." Sam said as Maya left the room.
"Like a bear?" Cas asked, confirming that they were thinking the same thing.
"Like a bear." Sam nodded.
By the time Maya woke up, it was 9 in the morning and she could smell cooking coming from the kitchen. Low and behold, as she entered the kitchenette, she found Dean cooking pancakes at the stove, Sam sat reading something and Jack and Cas sat in the living room. And Daisy sat with them.
"Morning sunshine, pancakes?" Dean asked, spotting her over his shoulder.
Maya was slightly in shock but nodded with a small smile. "Thanks."
"Coffee's done!" Daisy shouted over to her.
"Thank god." Maya exclaimed, pouring herself a mug. Meanwhile, Sam and Dean held a smile on their faces as they watched their daughter/neice drink coffee as they had both done before and after (and during) every hunt that kept them up at night.
"Okay, water now."
Maya gave a small whimper as Daisy took the mug from her hands and handed her a bottle of water. "Don't give me that face. You know after a full cup you're awake for three days. Amy actually thought you'd taken an adreneline shot. So, drink up."
"When you go away, it's the only time I can drink it."
"And now I'm back."
"Why are you back?" Maya asked.
"Well, don't sound too dissapointed. I might start to think you don't like me."
Maya just rolled her eyes. "You know what I mean."
Daisy sighed, the pair taking a plate each from Dean who had stacked a couple of pancakes on each. "Ryan cut the weekend short."
"Ryan?" Maya asked.
"My new boss."
"He was there?" Maya asked shocked.
"And he couldn't have been more of a jackass if he tried." Daisy sighed.
"Why? What did he do?" Sam asked out of curiosity.
Now every was in the conversation, talking about how much Ryan was a jackass and how much work was a pain in the ass. And then it moved onto other topics of conversation such as Daisy embarrassing Maya by revealing all the things Maya had tried to forget about when she was young.
But Dean couldn't have been happier. He hadn't laughed like this in a long time. And hadn't been this...proud of someone before. His kid was a freaking genius!
"Oh, crap. That reminds me." Daisy said, looking to her watch. "I need to run to the lab for an hour or two. I left some samples to see how quickly the moulding process take hold. Anyone want to come and looking at fungi for the next hour or two."
"Hard pass." Maya and Dean spoke. But Sam and Jack agreed to go. Cas had some small errends to run, so that left the father-daughter duo alone.
"As long as no case pops up in the next ten minutes, let me get dressed and I can show you around the city? Daisy will keep them busy for the next three hours. Last time I went, I got there at 9am and didn't leave until 5 in the evening."
"Sure, Kid."
A few hours later, they pair had made their way to the standard sights in the city before finding themselves inside Argo's Bakery and Diner, sat eating a slice of his apple pie, each.
"You weren't kidding."
Maya smiled, shaking her head as she dug her fork into the pie. "No, I wasn't."
The pair sat and talked for a while, about life, about family, about hunting. And then they got deep. About family deaths. About Dean's time as a demon. About being in Hell. About the world ending nearly every year. About her mom's death. About...anything really.
"What about Mary?" Maya asked. "Is she still questioning if I'm real?"
"She loves you." Dean told her, truthfully. "I know that much. We might have only known you've existed these last 8 months, but, we love you."
Maya smiled. "You don't say that much, do you?"
"Not unless one of us is about to die, no." Dean eventually said after he thought about it.
Soon enough, the pair paid for their meals - Maya taking not taking no for an answer when Dean said he'd pay for the both of them. And, they even brought back some for the others.
"Hey, you're back." Maya smiled as they entered finding Sam, Jack, Cas and Daisy sat around the coffee table playing monopoly.
"We brought pie."
"Great!" Daisy smiled. "Agro's?"
"You know it."

ive been thinking about that lake house destiel AU for a while now and what if the empty was like the upside down in stranger things so everything that exists in this world also exists in the empty world and Dean and Cas both settle at this lake house but they are in different dimensions or whatever you wanna call it but there is some kind of a rift between them at this very house so they are able to send letters back and forth and then Dean secretly starts looking for ways to break Cas out of the enpty dimension, first unsure if it'll even work so he doesn't tell Cas straight away but when he does, Cas gets sad because he doesn't want Dean to be upset when the plan most likely fails and Dean insists it won't fail. But Cas cannot allow himself to hope gor something like that. But then just like that he's standing knee high in thr lake and for the first time he feels his pants wet around his calfs and then he feels the sunshine warming his cheeks. The wind blows gently and he turns aound and there he is - Dean, walking towards him with the biggest smile on his face. He's hugging Cas in no time saying "I told you it wouldn't fail" and "You are here" and Cas maybr starte to cry. And then Dean os crying too and they are holding each ither's faces and Dean whispers "I have been eaiting to do this forever" and he kisses Cas and Cas whimpers and kisses him back.

I’m going to get back to posting again soon… but right now all I’m thinking about is how my favorite term of endearment people choose for Cas to call Dean is “my beloved”
it’s perfect yes that is 100% what an Angel would call his favorite. He would be saying it like Arabic men use habibi because of course he would, he’s an Angel
And we just so happen to have a very similar word in America that men use but I never see it, so allow me to now make a suggestion for what Dean would call Cas… Beau.
it’s perfect. It’s so cowboy and everything. It’s culturally acceptable for straight men to call each other so it’s believable for Dean who I can’t every really buy being able to comfortably use “Babe”/“Baby”(no, that’s the car)/“honey” for another man, and “sweetheart” and “Angel” are only believable in private. Beau? None would be the wiser, he can get away with it scot-free! And Cas, ever so literal, gets to be called Dean’s beauty on a whim. By the one person we know Cas considers so beautiful. Likewise, I really like “sunshine” for being another culturally acceptable endearment. I mean, obviously, since that’s the one Dean actually called Cas in the show a couple of times. But it’s also in perfect harmony with beloved, because in Arabic ‘light’ (Nūr) is used affectionately so often; I imagine Cas interpreting Dean calling him sunshine to mean that he basks in his presence. As it happens, “Nora” is the feminized version Nur, and I like to think Cas saw some symbolism in that when he met Nora and entertained a relationship with her, before being confronted with seeing Dean again
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Now, following this theme- I think I’m on board with “honey” as an endearment for Cas, too, but not in public. Where Dean might think it’s embarrassingly corny, Cas might think it’s vulgar lol. However poetic

He used to call me Cas (now he calls me everything)
Title: He used to call me Cas (now he calls me everything) (Read on A03) Rating: Teen Characters: Dean Winchester, Castiel Pairing(s): Castiel/Dean Winchester Words: 1,175 Summary:
After Dean arrives in Heaven, it takes Castiel three months - and a lecture from Bobby - to go see him for the first time since The Empty took him. Inspired by Any Other Name by A_Diamond.
Dean calls him baby the first time they kiss. Castiel finds him one day, three months after his arrival, following a scathing lecture from Bobby. Castiel had deflected with Kelly, Charlie, Kevin, Ellen and Jo and even with Mary; but Bobby was the only one that had ever been able to truly chastise him like a father would. So he went, and he found Dean, and he remembers this dock and this lake. But there's a second chair where there used to only be one, and Dean is staring at him like he doesn't believe he's real. Then he's got Dean's hands on him, and his hands are on Dean, and they're gravitating closer and closer until finally, finally, Dean kisses him and says 'baby, where have you been? I've been waiting'.
He calls him sunshine in the mornings, when he finally shuffles into the kitchen, drowsy, chasing the scent of coffee in the air. He'll smile, softly, head still foggy from sleep (he sleeps eight hours now, and isn't sure how he ever survived on four when he was alive), and Cass will snake an arm around his waist to pull him close and lay a kiss on his cheek. He'll hand Dean a fresh cup of coffee in his favorite mug, and Dean will close his eyes and lean into him until the cup is empty.
Dean calls him angel when he's flirting, a smile on his lips and a sparkle in his eyes. It's usually accompanied by a light touch up his arm, or a teasing finger down his neck, or a warm hand on his thigh. Dean's a flirt, always has been, and Castiel can't believe that now it's all directed at him. It disarms him completely, and he tries to flirt back but can't think of words, and Dean's smug grin at his weak attempts reveals he knows exactly what he's doing.
Dean calls him darlin' and honey when they're in public. At Mary's over tomato rice soup and apple pie, when they visit Kelly to help her in her garden, at Bobby's house bringing him a fancy bottle of whiskey, when they see Charlie at some geek event she's organized in this new Heaven, over beers and shots at the Harvelle's Roadhouse – it doesn't matter. He can see Dean's soul again, now that he's got all his Grace back, and every time he says those words, it glows brighter and brighter, until Cass is dizzy with the light and thinks he's looking at the sun. Jo and Eileen tease him mercilessly whenever it happens, and for all his millennia, all Castiel can do is look down and smile.
He calls him boo and sugar and snookums when he's playfully teasing or being silly. It's harder to get drunk here, but occasionally he manages it. Someone will ask Castiel what the date on Earth is, and if it's close to a special occasion – an anniversary, a birthday, a holiday – the humans will start making plans. Those plans usually include copious amounts of alcohol, and usually ends up with Dean being silly in a way he never really got to be in life, having everyone he loves together in one place (especially after Sam, Eileen, Jody and Donna all arrive – he can wait for Dean Jr and Claire, Kaia, the other girls to arrive, but for now this is enough), alcohol or no.
Dean calls him sugarpie when Ben arrives and tracks him down, having remembered everything years before. Castiel doesn't know why he remembers, he shouldn't, but he does. He brings his mother with him, who also remembers now, and their reunion is bittersweet to Castiel until Dean assures him 'ain't goin' anywhere without you, sugarpie'.
He calls him stud and Casanova whenever Castiel does something he deems hot, like moving an entire bookcase without taking the books off. Or when he catches him training outside, angel blade in hand, in the early morning hours (because angels don't sleep), after rolling over in bed and finding a cold place where a body was supposed to be. Castiel will be parring invisible blades and kicks and punches, and suddenly he'll sense Dean standing on their porch, watching him. When he turns around, the look Dean gives him is smoldering, and it's not very long before they're back in bed.
Dean calls him sweetheart when they're laying in a field, basking in the sun with butterflies darting around or the stars overhead with fireflies dancing in the air. He says it drowsily, happily, as Castiel's chest supports his head and the angel runs his fingers through his hair. He says it in the peaceful, easy moments, when it's just the two of them and the feeling washing over him is one he stopped feeling at four years old, the night his entire world fell apart.
He calls Cass dumbass when they're fighting. They still argue like crazy, still can't let go of some things, but mostly they fight about the small things. Like Dean dog-earing Castiel's latest book, or Castiel spending too much time away from home, helping Jack. Dean's still human, Castiel is still an angel, and even though one of them is dead now, they're still finding ways to cross the distance. Castiel thinks they'll always fight, but that's okay – because he'd rather fight with Dean then be without Dean entirely. Again. They're used to the fighting, by now, but it's the making up and forgiving after that's still new. Every time, Dean says 'we're just better together, dumbass'.
He calls him tweetiepie when they're sitting in the Witch Queen's parlor, drinking fine Scotch out of crystal glasses. Jack had finally given in to Sam's begging, and allowed the three of them to visit Rowena. Dean does it to tease the witch and the angel, but all they do in response is smile at each other. Dean's a little jealous, a little possessive, but Rowena just looks at them with her knowing eyes and says ‘I'm glad the two of you fixed it‘.
Dean calls him love in the middle of the night, pressed against each other, no room between them, no walls to divide them or apocalypses to rush out and fix. It's taken them almost twenty years to get here, not counting the ten years it took Castiel to get Dean out of Hell. Including the two years Cass spent in The Empty, dreaming of his greatest regrets (most of them having something to do with Dean, which was it's own kind of regret). Including the three years he waited for Dean to arrive, having been too scared to visit him on Earth after Jack broke him out. Even after Dean continued praying to him, right up until that piece of rebar ended his life. But now, here, in Heaven, they have all the time in the world. Because Bobby chastised an angel like he was his son, and the angel couldn't do anything but follow the stern order.
But the name Castiel loves the most is mine.

Note
I am incapable of serious thoughts but since cw spn is officially a sitcom because i said so consider the comedic potential of cscm,, every time an angel calls cas cassie (derogatory) she just pops her head around the corner dean why’s your new bf’s weird brother talking about me again and it escalates to the point that when someone tries that cas is also automatically like ??? Why’s everyone so obsessed with dean’s ex (also derogatory bc cas is petty) she’s not even HERE
AJDJSJJS SEE U GET IT
the hilarity that comes from dean’s first and last loves having such close names is not lost on us or on everyone else in the cscm universe and dean is so tired he’s So Tired of people doing it but everyone Knows it gets under his skin so they do it anyway and at some point early on cassie realizes how it’s funny too and she’ll be like “ur other cassie called i see how it is” and he’s like. cassie please not today
obsessed with the idea that cas likes cassie they’re friends! but this is just so annoying to him bc his name isn’t cassie- his nickname cas is the Only thing other than castiel that anyone can call him so he’s just a bitch about it

Destiel Fic Recs!
Congratulations or sorry, but here are some more Destiel fic recs to take over your life.
Penny & Pound by thalius @seasontwelvedean (Explicit, 67k WIP)
OK, I know some of you don't read works in progress, but this one is worth breaking that rule for, because it caused me approximately 25 internal breakdowns. Go read it yesterday.
Dean's in love with Cas. That's a given. And lately he's been thinking about doing something about it. Especially now that Eileen is becoming a fixture in their lives and Dean finds himself more achingly alone with Cas right beside him. All he has to do is work up the nerve to ask his best friend out. What's the worst that could happen? He says no? Leaves and never returns? They start dating and Cas realizes Dean is the worst and they break up and everything is terrible forever? He's fine. This is fine.
This canon/canon adjacent fic is a master class in the disaster4disaater, Dean and Cas are the last to know it's requited dynamic. It's amazing and sweet and I found myself unable to sleep until I read one more chapter. If that's not enough, there's also some incredible stuff about Dean and Mary trying to work on their relationship and Cas trying to figure out where he fits into Claire's life. This fic is everything.
Strandlines by aeli_kindara (Explicit, 40k) @gravelghosts
Speaking of fics that make me feral, Strandlines is one of those stories where you have to stop reading and think "holy shit this is so incredible" and then stare at the wall for a good 10 minutes.
Cas finds himself back in the year 2003 with his memory scrambled. All he knows for certain is that he has one directive: save Dean Winchester. It's Stanford Era Dean with all of his brash, charming bravado and his aching loneliness. And Cas at his BAMF angeliest but free from the interference of Heaven.
The fic will make you ache. It's gorgeous. It absolutely dismantled me. The way Cas sees the man who wants so desperately to know he can be loved. The way Dean wants Cas to stay and how he wants to share everything with him. It's breathtaking.
Plus there is a healthy dose of Fuck John Winchester as a treat.
the home we make together by vaudelin (Explicit, 48k) @vaudelin
A post-canon fix-it that is so soft and sweet. After losing Cas, Dean has exhausted almost all his options to try and bring him home. One more shot. And if it doesn't work, he'll have to stop. He needs to focus on Jack, now a toddler. Dean has built a life for them. A good one. But he has to try it one more time.
What follows is a sweet, consensual possession domestic Dad!Dean and Dadstiel fic that will heal your soul. Toddler Jack is adorable and Dean and Cas finally have time without the world ending to try and figure out what they want their life to look like. It's the soft epilogue they deserve.
Falling Inn Love by MalMuses (Explicit, 58k) @malmuses
Sometimes you need some hilarious, tropey rom-com goodness in your life, and this fic goes above and beyond. It had me laughing so hard I had tears rolling down my face as I tried not to wake my family (because I wouldn't put it down and go to bed). It also has a lot of heart.
Cas' comfortable if unsatisfying life gets turned upside down when he breaks up with his suffocatingly controlling boyfriend and then finds that the company he's devoted years to has gone belly up the next day .
Single and with no real plan, Cas is wallowing with his bestie (Meg, my beloved) when he gets an unexpected opportunity. His co-worker is willing to sell him a quaint little Inn in Kansas at a bargain price. Cas can finally pursue a dream he's had since college.
So off Cas goes, sight unseen, to start a new life. But he manages to make a complete fool of himself in front of the town's most eligible bachelor within minutes of arriving and the dream home he purchased turns out to be a bit of a nightmare. Cas may be a bit Inn (sorry, but you know I'm not) over his head.
More below the cut
The Closest Thing We Have To Magic by EllenOfOz and TrenchcoatBaby (Explicit, 221k) @ellen-of-oz
As I have said, I'm very picky about AU fics because I need Dean and Cas to feel like them. This one manages to hit all the Destiel feels for me and it is so so good.
Set in a world where magic exists but is regulated by elite learning institutions, Dean is a graduate student working on his thesis. This is made more difficult when he's assigned Dr. Novak, a drop dead gorgeous new professor as his advisor. An advisor he can’t stop thinking about.
Dean and Cas are absolutely messy disasters in the best way in this fic. Seriously, they are amazing. I'm a sucker for smart, competent Dean. And Cas is trying so hard to do the right thing.
But I can't rec this without also mentioning the absolutely stellar world building. The authors have created such great mythology. From the way magic works to the use of the profound bond to the societal inequities created by the regulation of magic. Seriously, you won't want it to end.

I'm gonna say something that is exceptionally hard to share because apparently some people need to hear it. The lgbtqia+ community is there to create a safe place for people who don't fit within cisheteronormative societal expectations, regardless of labels.
There have been a few hot takes about "pantomiming" or "performing" queerness and I want to say this is deeply hurtful to me personally.
I don't know where I fit when it comes to the gender fuckery that lives inside my brain. Straight spaces full of cis women often make me feel uncomfortable. Like I have to pretend I am someone I'm not. But I still (at this time) consider myself a cis woman. I enjoy and I am affirmed by my femme gender expression but hate being forced into feminine things. My brain often feels more like what society feels a guy should be like.
Nothing I have tried on feels quite right. Am I nonbinary? Gender nonconforming? Genderqueer? Mostly I describe myself as "a woman but in a way that makes most people distinctly uncomfortable." That makes me happy. That sentence feels right.
Talking about queerness as if it is one monolithic thing you can perform or pantomime makes me ache. Are my efforts for trans and GNC folks less meaningful if I am or am not part of the community? Can I joke about things being gender?
For me, queerness has always been looking at what society has to offer and saying: nope. I don't fit there. Queer spaces make me feel so much less alone.
And my openly bi status gives me a nice, clean place in those spaces, but it's my gender fuckery that makes me need them more.
The feeling that I could say: I'm not like other girls because I literally feel like I have to pretend around them, can I please come find shelter here? And that I might be told: nope, you are just performing queerness for clout. Or nope, you have to subscribe to certain external expressions to be considered queer. The idea that anyone could "perform" queerness because they acted outside of societal norms and that is somehow a violation? The idea that I might be expected to go from performing cis woman to performing queer woman where if I fail I am somehow not enough? Makes me feel invalid. It is physically affecting me.
So, I don’t know? Maybe think about that?

Which character from OFMD are you and who do you stan?
Let me tell you who you kin and who you stan in OFMD (or in SPNblr speak, what x coded, y girl (gn) alignment you have).

My #1 post of 2022
I'm gonna say it here too. Allow me to be crystal fucking clear.
It is not cowardly to stay in the closet. Full stop. You do not owe anyone any part of yourself you aren't ready to share
If you unable to come out because you fear for your safety or well-being or because you know it will cause you substantial discomfort, that is not a defect in you. It's a failure of the society in which you live and the community surrounding you.
If you just don't want to share that part of yourself, that is valid and I support you

one of many reasons castiel spent the first year of knowing dean trying not to strangle him: dean's weird little winchester-only dialect
i’m fucking obsessed with this right now, so buckle in for a meta. a cool fun (horrible) thing about dean's dialogue is that a good 90% of what comes out of his mouth is:
a pop culture reference ("you're just gonna take some divine bong hit, and shazam, you're roma downey?")
references to real life phenomenon ("i don't wanna wake up missing a kidney in a bathtub full of ice" "try new mexico, i hear he’s on a tortilla")
these also often take the form of nicknames, and dean has a tendency to give people nicknames in general or call them something besides their given name, whether it’s affectionate or rude ("easy there, van damme" "so i’m girl interrupted" furthermore castiel = cas, ezekiel = zeke, etc, see also frequent use of "chucklehead" "asshat" and on the nicer/endearments end "buddy" "pal" "sunshine" etc)
an idiom ("a snowball's chance" "if it smells like a duck...")
slang ("drinking the koolaid" "jonesing for some hooch" not to mention the literal endless amount of words dean uses to refer to killing - gank, waste, juice, ice, etc)
a metaphor ("power up your batteries" "fly me back to my page on the calendar")
a euphemism ("cloud seeding" "i'd have given you an hour alone with her first")
sarcasm (his habit of replying "peachy" or "super" when asked how he is)
wordplay (see: the entire "vampirate" and "werepire" debacles)
completely nonsensical (guessing what happened to a magical artifact: "it was dug up by tomb raiders? it was seized by the king of the dead by warlords?")
said at lightning speed - if you pay attention, dean actually talks a LOT, usually a mile a minute (this makes me feel a way when you recall him being nonverbal for a year at age 4 but that’s another post)
slang IN ANOTHER LANGUAGE (casual usage of “guano,” etc)
a lie, a deflection, a joke, etc
or worse, something dean’s NOT saying, deliberately, because he’s one of the most repressed people on earth
the end result of all this being:
dean winchester is utterly infuckingcomprehensible.
think about this. there's an ENTIRE SECTION on EVERY SINGLE EPISODE PAGE of the spn wiki devoted to JUST explaining dean's pop culture references, because the average viewer won't have seen everything he's talking about either. they have a whole page for this called “hunter’s lingo,” but honestly, it’s not all hunters, just sam and dean’s fucking batshit communication style. even i don't understand dean half the time. SAM gets it, sam speaks it back to dean a lot in the early seasons, but that's because sam and dean are 1. practically two halves of the same person 2. FREAKS. every time we get an episode that involves outsider POV is devoted to them going "what the fuck is WRONG with them?"
enter castiel. technically speaking, the show implies that angels are omnilingual. castiel should understand every language known to man, but knowing the meaning of words doesn't help him understand the following:
pop culture references
references to real life phenomenon
nicknames
idioms
slang
metaphors
euphemisms
sarcasm
wordplay
you get the idea.
listen to me. look me in the eyes. castiel cannot understand a single fucking word that comes out of dean's mouth. my guy laid a hand on dean winchester in hell and immediately fell in love with him and has no fucking idea what he's talking about ever. because not only is dean winchester's way of speaking CLINICALLY insane, and sometimes incomprehensible even to other human beings who are not sam, castiel is an angel, and someone prone to taking things even more literally than other angels do
go back and watch and watch seasons 4-5 especially. the reason cas does so much squinting and head tilting is because every time dean opens his mouth castiel has to open up his mental "dean winchester dictionary" and translate entire paragraphs on the fly, because again, dean never shuts up!
what makes this extra hilarious to me is this gem:
Tumblr media
this line is from 5.13. at this point cas has known dean for AN ENTIRE YEAR AND A HALF. what you see here is my guy SNAPPING. cas made an EFFORT in this scene. he asked who glenn close was. he's telling dean that he can't understand him. he is doing his level best to have a normal conversation with this guy he has a crush on and for the life of him he cannot do it (equal but opposite energy to cas blowing up the gas station and motel room in 4.01, tbh)
yes, cas can understand dean's tone. he can use context clues, and he usually gets the general idea. and when cas DOES understand dean's jokes, he laughs at them. the first time we ever see him smile is during their 4.07 heart-to-heart when dean says "it was a witch, not the tet offensive." since cas has knowledge of human history, he knows what the tet offensive is; he got the joke, and he laughed.
but as far as actual dialogue goes, he consistently struggles to keep up. even after metatron gives castiel the pop culture knowledge in season 9, cas struggles to put it to put it to proper use (dean: "you wanna just walk right into the death star?" cas: "what does a fictional battle station have to do with this?"). whenever he asks dean to clarify it's always when he’s most annoyed, like most of the time he knows it would be futile but he's too annoyed to care. (dean: "i don't know who's on first, what's on second!" cas: "what IS second???") i’m pretty sure he spends seasons 4-6 wanting to shake dean by the shoulders and ask him why he is LIKE THIS.
it takes cas - who, again, is omnilingual - YEARS to begin to acclimate to dean’s speech and start speaking that language back to him. it's season 8 before we start really hearing him use slang, season 9 before he begins to understand wordplay, season 10 before he starts using pop culture references (to other angels, who immediately fail to understand him, which disappoints him immensely), and season 11 before he really gets into metaphors. i don't remember what season he started using "yeah" instead of "yes" but i do know it took a really damn long time.
and honestly, i don't think cas truly got the hang of it until at least season 11-12. that's something like 7 or 8 YEARS. it’s more than half the time they’ve known each other at the point of the series finale.
so what's true romance, fellas? it's falling completely and totally in love with the most inexplicable person you will ever meet in your whole 4.5 billion year life, even though you have yet to understand a single thing he's ever said to you. thank you for coming to my ted talk
