So bungie made this post, and it’s getting dog piled by reactionary morons. Latinx derives from Chicano movements incorporating a Nahua ‘X’ into modern Spanish (Chicano can be rendered as Xicano with almost the same pronunciation). Chicanx was a way to incorporate a linguistic heritage that was almost wiped out by the Spaniards, challenge Spaniard led linguistic rigidity in gendered language, and also speak to the American relationship with the letter ‘x’ (Malcom X, the usage of X to mark slave cargo etc).
It’s a regional thing, invented by those that that thought it worked for them. If it doesn’t apply to a Hispanic or Latino because they don’t have a Nahua ancestral root, cool! It wasn’t supposed to be all encompassing. And yet the response is just pure smoothbrain reactionary - especially for something which is just a regional thing. What? Chifa isn’t a word because it’s only in Peru?
If you use Twitter, go mark that stupid community note as unsourced and incorrect.

Begging gringos (and some latin-americans descendants who were born and grew up outside America Latina) to learn somethings.
There's no such thing as "white passing Latino" unless that person is indigenous.
Stop saying that you're not white because you're Latino, you are white. You're not a victim of racism for being Latino, you're affected by xenophobia.
Latino it's not a race.
If one of your parents is Latino and the other is not you're not "half Latino and half white/black/asian/brown etc" you're whatever race you are AND LATINO, you're both, the entire thing, no half.
Latinos aren't mixed or biracial for being Latino and white/black etc.
Latino it's A CULTURAL IDENTITY, an attachment we have to the country we came from. And that country HAVE TO BE PART OF AMERICA LATINA.
French, Italians, Spain people, THEY'RE NOT LATINO. (I can not believe I have to say this) yes, Latino have this linguistic meaning of people who speak a latin language and that includes french and Italian, but no one use the word in that sense most of the time. Latino it's a cultural identity related to only America latina.
PEOPLE FROM SPAIN AREN'T LATINOS, they're Hispanic, Wich is also not a race and does not make white Hispanics less white. Hispanic are people who are born in spanish-speaking countries, that's it.
For the mother of god STOP SAYING LATINX. Not only is completely useless when you're speaking in English since the English language ALREADY HAVE A NEUTRAL FORM OF SAYING LATINO (literally "Latin"), but also not even inside America Latina with our languages we say "Latinx" since people with Dislexia here often have a problem pronouncing and reading that. Insisting In the use of that is ableist and stupid. Either say "Latin" or "Latine"
NOBODY LOOKS LATINO, we don't have "Latin phenotypes", you could show me a picture of a Chinese family, tell me they're Brazilians and I would believe in you because that's how diverse america latina is, no one look Latino.
Doing this list because I was reading ultimate Spider-Man and miles called himself "Half Hispanic" and that pissed me off because he said that as a response of someone saying that he's black. As if this would make him less black or half black and he's both black and Latino, no halfs.

Angel Reyes x Y/N
MasterList
Part 1
Part 2
Part 3
Tumblr media
Part Four:
A/N: Again, I just want to say that I am not Latinx and am completely winging this and in no way trying to disrespect anyone or anything in the Latinx culture. If I do get something wrong, please tell me and I will fix it right away. Now onto the next part of the story…
Things you should know about this part: Y/E/C = Your eye color. Also, we are pretending that bishop didn’t have a kid that he lost previously. Strong langue is used just a heads up on that.
That night Angel met his brothers in Templo and briefed them all on Y/N’s condition and what she and his pop’s had told them about what had happened and Coco and Gilly both agreed that they would start the recon work to try and find the guy that almost killed Y/N.
Bishop was at the head of the table and was clearly still angry that they had almost lost someone he had viewed as a daughter. This whole situation made him feel a level of fear he hadn’t in a long time. A fear he had thought he had buried. His life he had to bury all any and all emotions besides anger to survive in that world. This dredged all those emotions to the surface, and he was having a hard time concealing them and everyone was starting to notice. Bishop decided to end the gathering at this point and slammed the gavel adjourning them, asking Angel to stay behind for a talk.
Agreeing angel move closer to his Presidente speaking first, “Bish, I know this situation is bad, but she told me to come back here ant update you guys. She knew everyone would be worried about her and that I should be here because all she was going to be doing was sleeping. I did stay until she drifted off again…”
Angel had finally paused to take a breath when Bishop finally spoke up, “She told you to be here right? So, you are finally going to listen to her then?! We almost lost that girl! You understand that right?! That perfect, amazing, wonderful, Y/E/C eyed girl almost died thinking you stopped loving her and that she wasn’t welcome in this clubhouse. Or around her found family because of your bullshit! That changes now, understand?!”
Bishop was yelling at this point and Angel couldn’t blame him. He knew how awful he had been because of his jealousy, and he knew everyone knew that was what drove Y/N away. “Bish I never meant to push her away like that, I was afraid one of the guys or even you would take her from me. She was getting so close with everyone…” Angel was beating himself up over it now. He knew how ridiculous he was being then and how ridiculous he sounded now.
Bishop took this as his opportunity to really lay into Angel because he was so blinded by jealousy his couldn’t see the way things really were between everyone and Y/N, “You stupid son of a bitch! You’re seriously going to try that shit with me? You know how she looks at the rest of us? Like brothers! And they all love her like a little sister. And hell, she’s like a daughter to me.’’
Bishop slammed his fist on the table instead of into Angel’s face like he desperately wanted to, he was frustrated at the entire mess they were in. He sighed and tried to calm himself. Standing, he looked to Angel, “Now I’m going to go and sit with our girl so that she isn’t in that hospital room by herself. You go have your fun with the guys.”
With that he stomped out past Angel and out to his bike, starting it up and speeding off to Y/N’s bedside. Angel walked out of Templo and looked at the guys, who were all looking at him with an expression of ‘you screwed up big and every word Bishop said was right.’ No one needed to actually say it; however, it hung in the air like cigarette smoke.
Bishop arrived at the hospital and after some bribery, he made his way into Y/N’s room sitting down in the chair that Angel had previously occupied. He sat next to her and held her hand gently. He watched her happy that she was on the upswing and that, after quite a bit of healing and down time, she would be okay. He stayed all night, awake, and watching her ready to jump and run for a nurse at any sign of movement or distress. He couldn’t help the smile and tears that pricked his dark eyes when she opened hers and offered him a weak smile and greeted him with a soft ‘Hey you”.
He was grinning ear to ear and wiping the corners of his eyes as he spoke to her, “Hey Sweetheart. You scared the hell out of us.” He spoke quietly and brushed the hair out of her eyes. He was so stern and stoic all the time around everyone but her. With Y/n he could be real instead of the hardened soul he had become from years of the club and club business.
She smiled sadly back and apologized to him, “I’m sorry Bishop. But thank goodness for Coco. The nurses say if it wasn’t for him, I wouldn’t still be on this side of the dirt. Sure, am glad he’s got the training he has.”
Bishop nodded in agreement to Y/n’s words. He knew all too well if they hadn’t had Coco there, she’d be gone. A thought he did his best to shake out of his head. He gave a dry laugh, “Yeah, that’s a phrase uttered frequently…” He trailed off knowing she never cared for the way he’d harass Coco and the guys, and he didn’t want to upset her, not now.
After giving him a look noticing him trail off, she squeezed his hand, “They are moving me to a regular room today, if all goes to plan that is…” Y/n now trialed off knowing all too well that things could change in a heartbeat.
Bishop knew it too. He did his best to deflect and keep the subject light. He didn’t want her stressing over too much. Before he could change the subject though Y/n spoke again.
“Bishop, any word on who did this yet? I know it’s a little soon but…’’ She looked slightly hopeful that her boys had come through but when Bishop shook his head her heart sank slightly. He did tell her that Coco and Gilly were on it. This made her feel better knowing that those two wouldn’t sleep until they had found the shooter.
A nurse had come into the room and started taking Y/n’s vitals and doing other things that needed done asking what the relation was to the man in the room and Bishop spoke up before Y/n could saying that she was his daughter. Which caused Y/n to cry because that was something that had never been discussed between them it was just assumed that was the dynamic they had.
Y/n had never had a dad in her life, she barely had a mom. She had thought that Phillipe would be the only one to end up becoming a ‘bonus dad’ to her but Bishop also ended up in that role and to hear him say that proudly to the nurse was something she hadn’t expected from him.
The nurse started checking information and begave to try to question his statement only for Y/n to shut her down with a simple “I was adopted, and it was decided I was to keep my last name.” This seemed to satisfy the nurse and the subject was promptly dropped. The nurse said that the doctor would be in shortly to make the decision about moving her to a regular room.
The doctor came into the room about twenty minutes after the nurse had left and checked Y/n over and informed her that she was indeed well enough to be moved to a regular room and would most likely be sent home in another day or so but wouldn’t be able to be by herself for at least a week after.
Bishop told the doctor not to be worried about that, she would be with at least one person around the clock between his club and her boyfriend father she wasn’t being left out of anyone’s sight for quite some time. Most likely well beyond that week, which prompted both the doctor and Bishop to chuckle.
As the doctor started going over the things that would be necessary after she was sent home Bishop’s phone rang and he excused himself to take the call. Once he returned the Doctor finished up his speech and left. Bishop looked at Y/n and she knew.
Bishop spoke in s deadly serious tone, “That was Coco, they found him. Now here is the tricky part, who do you want to stay here with you while the rest of us go take care of this piece of shit?”
To Be Continued…

genuine question here: i just read something about “Latinx” being considered a slur (or at least incredibly offensive) by most actual Latino and Hispanic people. is that true? (since the whole point of the post is me not being sure, i’m just gonna use “Latino” as gender-neutral)
the main reason i ask is bc i’ve never heard that before for as long as i’ve known of the word itself, and because ive heard it used so often in formal/academic situations - even by Latino people - with no issue brought up in comments etc
most people talk about it as an attempt to “correct” the gendered nature of Spanish grammar itself, which is not what I thought the term referred to - grammatical “gender” is not the same as gender identity anyway, so that would be pointless and also quite stupid imo
I was always under the impression that the term was an attempt to be inclusive of nonbinary/gnc people of Latin heritage. i know that the masculine form is usually considered to be neutral as well, and for some words like “persona” the feminine form is actually neutral. but even then, there’s also a sort of movement happening to get rid of the “male-as-default” trend in several languages - even English - and establish truly gender-neutral terms that are not associated with any gender whatsoever.
of course since i’m not Latina myself, i’m in no position to really have my own opinion on the topic; i’m mostly just curious, and I don’t wanna offend anyone ofc. though I’m inclined to feel that the voices of nonbinary/gnc Latino people are the most relevant here, since they represent both identities in question.

Kindly Reminder that using latinx is stupid, not only latino and hyspanic is already a neutral word that refers to whole ethnic and geographics groups
But also latinx was created by people who don't talk the language at all, gringos that wanted to feel part of a group they dont belong to and have a new title for some reason

Writing a Latine character
Here’s a little PSA for people who would like to write a Latine/ Latinx/ Latina/ Latino character in their stories and want to be a decent writer.
The great thing about writing is that you can make whatever you want, come to life. You can create characters and plot points and twists and all that good stuff.
You can also chose to not be a fucking racist piece of shit.
Recently there was a book written by a white woman called Drive which involved a lot of racist tropes, jokes, and stereotypes that deal with a Mexican girl. I feel like this should be talked about.
The writer issued a bullshit apology on IG but she turned off the comments so here the fuck we are. The examples listed are from said book as well.
If you don’t know how to write ethnicities that are not your own make sure you  get a sensitivity reader to help you, or just don’t write them. However, this author had a “Mexican friend” who informed the general public that the author had lost her v*iginity to a person with a Hispanic sounding last name... yeah idk. And that she had lots of Hispanic people on her team because she is color blind, but “not in a bad way”. So idk get someone that doesn’t know you and is confined to a very racist state, again she’s from TEXAS.
However if you would like to make your list of characters more diverse without being a racist these are somethings you can avoid doing.
Don’t add r*cist jokes (that should go without saying, but here the fuck we are). Or unnecessary race jokes even if they are being said by your Latine characters. You aren’t us, so leave these things out of your writing.
For example:
Immigration jokes, specifically border patrol jokes. (Below is a screen shot from the book I mentioned)
Tumblr media
Internalized racism “She doesn’t speak Spanish because she thinks she sounds stupid. She hasn’t used the lounge enough, and she doesn’t like being half a b*aner.” (This was written by a White Texan woman in 2017. I wonder what was happening at the time that made a lot of Mexican and Latine people the target of xenophobia and racism).
Inquisition jokes: “’No, it’s the Latina Inquisition,’ he said with a twist of his lips.”
Colonization jokes
Fetishization “’There’s the cocky little Latina I know and love,’”
Tropes
The spicy latine (angry/ loud/ jealous):“’You’re so rough around the edges, my little Latina.” And “’Yeah, well, you were getting a little fucking feisty back there, Stella.’ I laughed. ‘You don’t like it when I show my Latina.” WHAT THE FUCK!!!
The maid
The self hating brown girl: “And every dark girl want to know what it’s like to be a light girl at some point in their life.”
The dancer: “’Come on, woman, you’re half Mexican. You were born with rhythm.’” “’I’m Latina,’” I corrected “’And I have rhythm. Shut up.’”
Certain mentions of one’s ethnicity where there shouldn’t be
“’GO!’” I screamed at the top of my Latina lungs...” (Ah yes to show that she thought we are very loud.)
“‘How about you kiss my Latina ass.’“
“Paige, I’m fine,’ I said, trying to keep the angry, tequila-filled Latina at bay.’“ (Because we are always pissed off and prideful)
DON’T USE SLURS, even if you have heard people use them with each other, You aren’t us so stop. If you don’t know if a word you are using is a slur, look it up, thankfully Google is free, or don’t use that word you are unsure of. No one should have to remind you not to be a piece of shit.
Avoid racist situations towards your characters in your books especially if you are writing in a fantasy setting. Most readers like to escape to a different reality, why the fuck are you making them take these things with them as they read your book.
Just because you saw some racist shit go down from one Latine to another, DON’T WRITE IT IN! FFS
If you are a latinx/e person who has experienced these things and your main character is also Latinx/e that is fine because it deals with YOUR experiences, everyone else stfu.
And if any of you feel some kind of way about this post, figure out why and change that shit because what the fuck?
- Sincerely a Mexican- American woman that shouldn’t need to be writing this.

At first the daddy thing was a bit funny but also annoying, then it became exhausting and kinda gross, now it just feels absurd and insulting.
Unless you're a white english native or white from a european country we all have challenges when it comes to representation in media. Latinx people have historically been the "dumb hot character" from using our accents as a joke, to assigning stupidity as a main character trait for us, both men and women being used as the sexy ones people get to objectify without shame, usually in undervalued jobs like maids, plumbers, gardeners etc.
And this "representation" has lead to horrible things, I had to go through things like CBP officers asking me as a 13-14 year old if I was traveling to become a sex worker at the airport (and this isn't a dig at sex workers but I was a literal child). So it just fucking sucks that as roles for latinx people have started to change and diversify the media is refusing to let go, to let us be something else.
Pedro has been the lead in 2 huge shows this year, he is by far in the lead to win best actor at several award shows and TLOU is also in the lead for best show in general. He has been cast in several really cool projects and yet I click on an interview and I can't go 3 seconds before hearing the word "DADDY", all this success, all these incredible things and yet THIS is the main topic for him, THIS is the go to. It's so frustrating specially in an ACTORS ROUNDTABLE which isn't a damn mtv fun little interview but something that's meant to be bigger and more serious.

If gay-hating Arkansas Gov. Sarah Huckabee Sanders thought it was going to be easy to impose a new law that threatens librarians with jail time for providing banned books (gay, in other words) to children, she’d better guess again.
She’s now being sued by a coalition of librarians, booksellers, authors, and readers who are challenging The Arkansas Act 372. The lawsuit was filed Friday by a group that includes the Arkansas Library Association, and the Central Arkansas Library System, Queerty reports.
The Arkansas Act, which Sanders signed into law in March, is incredibly draconian, threatening librarians with as much as a year in jail if they are caught giving kids banned books. The coalition accuses the legislation of violating the state’s 1st and 14th amendments.
“Library workers across Arkansas are rightly concerned that the overly broad edicts of Act 372 will prevent them from serving their patrons as they have always done, by providing a wide variety of materials to fill their information needs, and perhaps more importantly, materials that allow each child to see themselves in the books in their library,” wrote Carol Coffey, president of the Arkansas Library Association, in a statement.

Mind you, Arkansas is the fourth poorest state in the U.S. It is dealing with a growing affordable housing crisis, and overwhelming food insecurity. And according to a recent Scholaroo study found the state ranks 49th in the nation regarding quality of life, and 50th in the nation regarding health.
You’d think Huckabee Sanders would focus on this, but nope. She’s not. Since being elected in January, hating on the LGBTQ+ community has been her top priority. So much so, in fact, that she appointed Jacob Oliva, the dude who is responsible for implementing Florida’s “Don’t Say Gay” law, to head the Arkansas Department of Education and then signed a law prohibiting trans teachers and students from using school bathrooms and locker rooms that match their gender identities.
She even went as far as to sign an executive order that prevents “indoctrination” in classrooms. The order prohibits teachers from respecting a student’s pronouns. Teachers are also not allowed to talk about sexuality, gender, or race. Even the gender-neutral term “Latinx” is banned.
Then there’s the stupid line of transphobic beer koozies that she recently released.
Because in a state buried under the weight of poverty, mounting food insecurity, and exploding housing costs what people really need right now are beer koozies with her mug plastered on them. But is what she’s doing really called governing? She’s imposing her own will on people and doing nothing to solve the towering problems her state is faced with.
But Arkansans voted her in so I guess they get what they deserve. They’ll be safe from learning about the people living within their own community. No learning about Black history or LGBTQ+ history in the U.S. And this is a real tragedy.
Arkansans have now officially won the booby prize.

i hate driving thru oklahoma bc it's a bunch of tiny towns that kinda remind me of where im from but dude im not exagerating when i say there are marijuana dispensaries like back to back in these towns. there are so many packed onto one street alone and then the liquor stores ofc then youve got your billboards that have suicide prevention ads specifically for native american populations and when you get to bigger areas all you see are the casino/gas station advertising and "cultural centers" and im not gonna pretend to be an expert on oklahoma/native american issues but they (as in oklahoma in general) got some of the highest rates for mental illness/SUDs and it's like wow i wonder why. the only time i ever hear anything about oklahoma is to talk about tulsa which like, yeah, obv important, but im just tired of so much being overlooked and driving thru the area really just encapsulates that feeling for me. also their toll roads are confusing :))))
it's the same feeling about being from south texas and then seeing people constantly trying to talk about the area like they know shit. like jill biden accidentally mispronounces a word and everyone is talking shit about her calling hispanic people tacos???? like she didnt say shit wrong, south texas mexicans are super proud of their breakfast tacos and she was talking about that area specifically. y'all just wanna talk shit about stupid inconsequential shit. we got people, babies!! in cages still, got high covid rates, poverty and literacy rates are off the shits.
but people wanna talk about words. like OKAY, let's do that. first stop talking about us as a damn collective. if you look at mexican americans alone, our experiences and perspectives vastly differ. youve got people like my family who has been in this country for many generations, never was forced out on one side, assimilated to a degree while retaining their identity, then youve got full assimilated mexicans who have been here for the same amount of time, youve got mexicans who have been here forever with little interactions with anglos, youve got recent immigrants with verryyyy different experiences. and that's just mexicans. but you wanna group those people all together AND other ethnic/immigrant groups bc they all come from latin america???
the news was talking about this biden shit and was like "ohoho biden may have some trouble with his biggest political ally" And im !!!!!!! like ur reporting about people "cancelling" jill bc they decided she called them tacos or some shit bu you are generalizing everyone and then looking at them purely as a political tool. like bruh. did the same shit in 2020 and was surprised when cubans voted for trump, like yeah that would be less of a shocker if you took the time to understand all of us.
OR how the left keeps alienating us by referring to us as Latinx? like do you know how complicated that shit it? my area and family has never used latino, we say mexican or hispanic, sometimes tejano or chicano, but that's rarer in my experience, but you wanna refer to everyone as this super new term that is very divisive? i dont even care when other hispanic people call me latina, but i understand if they dont wanna be called hispanic bc it's fairly problematic lmao but everyone is so eager, so blase about using this term for everyone on a level where they should be very cautious.
oh man what else, you could do that "hispanic/latino isn't a race" that comes up constantly. like yeah mf ik it's complicated teehee you could talk about how some us refer to ourselves as spanish bc we hate ourselves so much. talk about how everyone labels every brown person as "mexican" when they mean hispanic/latino. so much shit. but let's shit on this old ass white lady for a relatively innocent comment said in the context of her supporting hispanic people :))))))

Is "folx" just a fun way of spelling "folks" or is it one of those nonsensical "latinx" things that disregards the fact that "latino" can be used gender-neutrally in the same way the English "guys" can.

American standards of race are stupid anyways and Latin America is kind of yknow a place where mixed people are Everywhere and considered just as Latinx as the rest
Mmmm no, let's not go with the "Ohhh americans are the only ones that care about race" either; Latinoamérica simply has other terms, or directly avoids using words to name certain things (and we know there is a historical reason for that!).
And while I do agree we are incredibly mixed (given colonization, immigration, etc) we have to admit that it's often an argument used to silent casual racism in Latinoamerica (the amount of times i've seen people go "it's okay i am part native so I can joke about this" it's astounding.)
I get being uncomfortable with being categorized by someone else/being put under a labell you didn't even chose, but we should also be critical of these things.

This was gonna be a reply to someone else’s post but I figured why hide it in the replies. So…
I think tptb probably will keep Ry*n around after his latest bs because he’s doing the bare minimum to keep his job, i.e. following vax protocol. Bare. Minimum. 🤦🏾‍♀️ But that’s not a win imo.
Just doing the bare minimum causes legit harm to so many people irl. His coworkers are real people and working with him has to be getting harder and harder with every stupid post/comment that oozes out of him. I mean they’re resilient so they’re probably handling it fine but they shouldn’t have to put up with his crap all the time. I mean the n-word and comparing vax protocols to nazi germany??? Come on!!! The bar is on the ground and he just can’t seem to effing clear it!!!
It’s 2022; leveling up to be a decent human is the least he can do and being fired might be the needed wake up call. Or not. I dunno. I’m not his keeper and I don’t care if bad things happen to his career because he chose to show his ass. Repeatedly.
As for “nobody else can be eddie”, I disagree. Talent and chemistry aren’t as rare among actors as folks like to think. I love Eddie AND I’m not okay with encouraging asshole behavior by expecting nothing/accepting the status quo. If Ry*n has to go, I’m confident another talented Latinx actor can and will step up to fill his shoes. So much the better if that actor is actually queer. I think it’s also important to note that Oliver is a talented actor and might have the same amazing on-screen chemistry or WAY better with someone who is not a trash person!
Ry*n would not be the first actor to be replaced on a show, if it comes to that. See Capheus in Sense8. If we let go of our attachment to Ry*n face on Eddie’s personality, i think the fandom could make the transition to someone else playing Eddie just fine. 💁🏾‍♀️
I think I’m done ranting on this topic. I just had to get this out.

hi luki! i have a clarification question. I’ve looked into it but I see different answers everywhere. From what I gathered (obviously please correct me if I’m wrong) Latino or Latina is gendered, there for the correct term is Latine? I saw some Latinx but I’m not sure that’s appropriate. If you have insight on what the correct term or terms should be I’d really appreciate it!
i tried searching for a post where i explained it in detail but i couldn’t find it so sorry, i’ll make it short here
spanish is a very gendered language as a derivative from latin. latin used to have a neutral gender, but it’s not like it was assigned only to “stuff”. some stuff like rosa, rosae (rose) were feminine, lupus, lupi (wolf) were masculine, but templum, templi (temple) was neutral. spanish lost that along the way and modern spanish has every single noun with an assigned feminine or masculine gender: el gato, la flor, el cuadro, la mesa. so at some point it was decided all masculine plural nouns would be “neutral” when talking about a group of people that was diverse in gender. 5 girls are “chicas.” 5 boys are “chicos.” 5 boys and 5 girls are “chicos.” 5 girls and 1 boy are “chicos.” 100 girls and 1 boy are “chicos.” you can see the problem? no matter how many women there are in a group of people you only need 1 man to change the entire language around them. in that sense, the grammatically “correct” way to name the latinamerican identity would be to say Latino. but that is clearly gendered and not inclusive of women or anyone who’s on the gender spectrum.
a few years back people started using both, especially in politics, saying for example “alumnos y alumnas”, “ciudadanos y ciudadanas”, “argentinos y argentinas”, and some people got mad saying it was pandering and a waste of time. i mean it’s grammatically incorrect but also i appreciate being included. but we’re still excluding anyone who’s not male or female. so, some people started using the ridiculous @ as a way to mean both “a” and “o.” for example: alumn@s, ciudadan@s. but this is actually a bastardization of the language. how do you even pronounce this?
the term “latinx” is not a term that came from the latinamerican community. nobody who’s a spanish or portuguese native speaker would be able to pronounce that term. it was coined and then adopted by americans and the english speaking latine community in the united states, not by the people who actually live in latin america. worse, recently i’ve learned in english is pronounced “latin-ex” which is.... so ridiculous?????? anyway. when latinx started getting popular we faced the issue of how on earth do you pronounce latinx. so people decided “latine” was a good way to do it. and at some point they also decided hey maybe let’s drop the stupid x and just use the -e.
the termination -e is actually used today a lot in academic settings as a new gender neutral way to gender words. “alumnes, ciudadanes, argentines.” it’s inclusive of all genders and pronounceable.
the use of “latine” instead of “latinx” is incredibly important because it’s actually pronounced by the people it describes. by using latinx you’re excluding the people you’re trying to include.

this is a post thats just me complaining based on my feelings as a black person on ofmd and the reaction to it. people can do what they want and be critical of whatever. nobody needs to stop complaining abt ofmd. this is just me complaining abt ppl complaining and this is my official disclaimer of please dont be obnoxious to me
tumblr keeps making me insane bc i keep getting mad at purposefully bad faith and ill meaning "critiques" of ofmd that arent actually trying to open a dialogue or anything, but are just. unpleasant. which its ok to be critical of things including the show i just think a lot of people are fucking idiots unwilling to examine media in an actual critical fashion and instead are just 1. negative for the sake of being negative and 2. shuts down any further conversation on the topics to the point of removing agency from other poc in fandom and the poc (and black ppl specifically) making and acting within the show. like its not possible that other people might just have different opinions on how to portray history, no ofc not, we have to be patronizing and assume that the black writers just dont know any better and are too ignorant of their own history to understand their own subjugation.
its just annoying and unproductive in a way that goes beyond discussing analysis of the show and its relationship to race, and instead gets stuck on this black and white viewpoint that doesnt just express "i dont care for this show" which is fine, but makes sweeping generalizations that ppl consuming the media or participating in fandom are all co-conspirators to bigotry and GOD its so stupid bc its a standard that is flat out not applied to other media. like i dont understand how people can say that black sails is flawed but ultimately good, a show that portrays both fictional and irl slaveowners with white characters who participate in the slave trade and assist in the sexual abuse of a black woman, and in the same breath discredit ofmd as a whole.
like! it doesnt matter that much but it is disheartening bc there flat out isnt that much media with this type of representation both in the show and in the writers room. i feel like people are so used to taika being in big marvel things that they forget that its not common for an indigenous man to be able to act/create things. and nobody needs to watch the show or be kind to it, but it does feel kinda fucked up that theres this encouragement for others to also not watch it or that ppl engaging in fandom are doing harm when theres just not much media with a gay indigenous love interest. theres not much media with latinx nonbinary people and esp not any of them dating a black man.
theres not much media with a writers room as diverse as theirs, where theres several black women/nonbinary black ppl in the writers room alongside other poc (THREE nonbinary writers of color!!!) same with having directors of color, makeup artists, and other crew members who are left off of set and have a hard time finding work in an industry that is not kind to them.
and idk! i think its kinda fucked up that this is not a big show, and that hbomax gave it very limited promotion and the vast majority of its promotion has been from the cast openly pleading for a second season, and word of mouth, but that criticism of it goes beyond personal distaste or open conversation, and instead is this stupid ass thing of promoting this stupid ass idea that a fandom existing is proof that theyre bigoted and that the show never shouldve existed in the first place.
it just sucks i guess! as a black person who genuinely likes the black representation in the show, and feels comforted seeing that the black cast are all openly joyful about the show and have talked abt being able to incorporate their culture within it, and the relief of having a writers room full of poc dedicated to not doing harm. like i was trying to find the article where leslie jones talks abt being excited about having her pirate boots and 20 husbands and how fun the character was to play, and the first thing that popped up on google was a handful of articles about the harassment she received for ghostbusters and the lack of support from her cast members. and it makes me sad that there arent many roles for black people in general, but that the black cast has been so positive about this story and have felt so connected to their characters.
and i just dont see the point in trying to take that away i guess? where you can just not watch the show, and you can be openly critical of it too, but it feels like an over expansion of that criticism to the point of discrediting the writers and actors as unknowing victims, actively and explicitly discouraging a fandom to emerge (the only thing sustaining a show that has not received support bc idk how to break it to ppl but networks arent kind to gay shows with casts of color,) and then purposefully shutting down any conversation on the topic including people bringing further context into the convo. (like that the actor loves the name roach, or that there are prominent black writers on the show, or that a lot of criticism has been specifically addressed before the show started and you dont have to agree with their approach, but its weird to erase the fact that thought went into this via a diverse room)
and its just fuuucking insane specifically because its criticism that is not leveraged at other shows!!!! at the very least, people cant sit here and explain how black sails is more woke than ofmd, a show with very few prominent poc where the main ones are a black woman raped on screen and a slave! with characters ALSO based off of real historical figures (the guthrie clan was a real clan!!!!!!) and white main characters who participate in the slave trade. and im p sure doesnt even have a single poc in the writers room? at the very least i desperately need people to be consistent.
be critical all you want, but it fucking suuuucks that its a hypercriticism being leverage against a show that doesnt have network support and only is able to get attention because of fans/word of mouth. and its fucking annoying how 1. its not even taikas show like he produced four episodes of it so idk why critique is mostly directed at only him but okay and 2. this weird thing where it feels like people deracialize him where i know he makes it look easy bc of how massively talented he is as a creator, but its not easy to get representation for māori or indigenous people and it SUCKS that it feels like people are discrediting and ignoring the fact that there isnt really any gay representation for indigenous ppl :(
anyways this was my long winded way of saying im going to try and be off tumblr for a bit bc this site irritates me and i need to stop being annoyed at tv things bc ppl can do and consume what they want just jfc it annoys me
