I watched The Lord of the Rings with my friends today and I’m really enjoying it. We only watched the first two since we didn’t have enough time to watch the last one since it was four hours LMAO. I’m really enjoying the characters and the worldbuilding, if anyone has read the books do you recommend?

alright you’ve been extremely extremely kind and indulgent to me about my oc and i cannot possibly thank you enough <333333 so MY turn now to ask YOU about YOURS. please tell me about maglor’s distant granddaughter who is also your bbeg?? .w. or about the chatty hobbits i would very VERY much love to hear about both!!!
~ @nelyoslegalteam, reporting from main <3
(long post, sorry for the random people stumbling upon this lol)
so I'm the dm for the chatty hobbits campaign and essentially it's set in a beleriand-adjacent continent, but with a few extra races and stuff. of the founders of the original settlements, the king of elende (the elf kingdom) is Gil-galad's (invented for the campaign) twin brother Finellach/Finwain. originally he was inspired by the fact that gil galad has a ton of names but only uses ereinion/gil, so I just invented a new character and gave him half the names. I headcanon gil galad as maglor's son, so finwain is in universe maglor's son (left at the havens with gil bc his wife divorced him for kinslaying and his kingdom, being next door neighbors with morgoth, is far too dangerous for small children).
Anyways, his descendant Elinyel (also known as aramire or elinnor) is the current queen of Elende! she's an evil fire-themed bard who is extremely feanorian in all the worst ways - her actual kingdom prospered under her reign, but she just does not care about everyone else as long as she's protecting her people. There were some tensions with one of the major kingdoms to the north (conflict over unclaimed territory between the kingdoms and some tariff stuff), so instead of risking the other kingdom starting a war and hurting her people, she just preemptively invaded it and started burned all the border territories to the ground.
her actual coronation was pretty weird- so she's the second child, but her older sister was born in wartime and there's a general belief in elende that children of peacetime make better rulers, so Elinyel was chosen as her family's heir. her grandfather (the crown prince of his generation) died defending Elende in one of the major wars, but his younger brother and two young kids survived. there's a whole feud between their houses because the brother chose to retain the kingship even after the kids were old enough to take the throne. anyways, two generations later Elinyel killed her cousin Arendil (the previous king of Elende) over a dispute about the legitimacy of his house (and what she believed to be a dishonoring of her grandparents' sacrifice) and took the throne.
obviously she has many Issues. arendil also has two surviving kids who are now essentially trying to stop her from murdering all their neighbors in proactive defense of her people.
however, when she first ascended she recruited her friend group as her elite guard/vassals of the kingdom. (aka the other bosses in the storyline). so it escalated to a war between her forces and the children of arendil, which ultimately culminated in her beloved sister being killed by one of arendil's children. this in turn led to her having basically a massive mental breakdown and feeling like she failed to protect her loved ones (exacerbated by some of her other friends being killed in battles she led). a normal person might decide this is was kind of her fault for starting a war and putting her friends in charge of the army. instead she decided she needed to destroy everyone who could ever potentially pose a threat. which is, in her eyes, literally everyone on the continent (except for her kingdom, of course).
so now she is at war with absolutely everyone of all factions! She is also somehow winning by virtue of Song almost on the level of maglor himself, and ten (now six) also incredibly powerful friends. Anyways, she has decided that the best way to wipe out the continent (except her kingdom) and start fresh is to literally find an ancient lost stone that can break the Doors of Night, summon Morgoth himself, and start the Dagorath. obviously this will Not go well for anyone at all if she succeeds, but she is on a full-on rampage and genuinely believes she (plus friends) can protect her kingdom from Morgoth's army while he wipes out everyone else.
Here's some old art of her btw!
Tumblr media
And some slightly more recent unfinished art of her and the Evil Friend Group from when they were younger:
Tumblr media
and here's (L-R) her cousin who is the 3rd boss, Elinyel, and her sister from before the war!
Tumblr media
#asks#THANK YOU FOR THIS BTW#i only have 1 friend irl who plays dnd and is also not affiliated with the campaign#and they aren't a silm person#so i cannot talk w anyone irl about the Lore#one of the few kingdoms who could really oppose her is the magic one#bc max level wizards might as well be ainur and the monarch of the magic kingdom is Very Powerful#however. said monarch is also the twin sibling of one of elinyel's friends#(who is also an evil lich now and also maybe dating a diff friend who is an evil sorceror? not sure of details yet)#so the super powerful battlemage monarch is remaining Politically Neutral so they don't have to fight their literal evil twin#currently the party is level 6 and just defeated the very-weakened wraith of one of the friends#she was a druid but sort of decayed when she was corrupted and was kidnapping untrained/low level sorcs as servants to siphon power from#and also living in the Grove of Resurrection in order to stay intact#i forgot her dialogue while running the battle so while i looked through my docs i just had her say 'loading please wait' lol#also more chatty hobbit stuff#the grove is a huge grassy area with a walking tree in the middle#so the whole thing is constantly roaming aroudn#the wraith-druid had her castle built on it so she could have a moving castle that also heals her#the grassy part will resurrect any dead thing put on it#for the battle they had to drag her off the grass in order to kill her#technically shes been dead for some years but is surviving via constant contact w the grove#the hobbit (Shade) is from the Alder family who has historically been the guardians of the grove#he discovered he could talk to the tree in the middle and immediately started trying to figure out a way he could use the grove to#clone one of the party members#the tree does not approve of intentionally cutting off people's arms to see if it regenerates into a clone lol#oh! and they found anglachel in the grove. the dragonborn monk wants to keep it

I pull out so many random facts about the making of Lord of the Rings that people usually respond with, 'how do you even know that?!'
oh, friend.
my brother, a most pretentious lotr fan, snatched up the extended edition hot off the shelf and for weeks it was the only thing on the tv all day long. I've seen every commentary, every special feature . . . twice. maybe more. I didn't have a choice.
#a butterfly obsesses#I've forgotten so much but still#maybe I just don't hang out with nerdy enough people and the rest of you know all this but:#billy boyd every time Minas Tirith is on the screen: I love Minas Tirith#Dominic Monaghan: shut. up.#sean austin forgot to put his waistcoat on for the scene where they all say farewell to frodo so they had to reshoot the whole thing#everybody had to cry again. but the second recording ended up blurry and they had to reshoot a 3rd time. nobody was happy with sean#when sam shows up to fight shelob his hand and sheathed sword appear first like the start of a duel in a western#that's actually peter jackson's hand#sean austin could 'see' shelob when they were filming those scenes. he could very vividly imagine her.#after he saw some cgi test footage of her he lost the ability to imagine her and had to work to get it back#dominic or billy I forget but one stole a skull from the scenes with the army of the dead#after pirates of the Caribbean came out they had to change the design for the army of the dead because the ghost designs were too similar#they built a huge dead Oliphaunt for the battlefield (peter wanted it to be bigger tho)#the people linking up plastic rings for the chain mail wore away their fingerprints on their pointer fingers and thumbs#they basically thawed a frozen stream so andy serkis could dive in and chase a fish in the ice-cold water#I want to say it was billy boyd who had to get a dental procedure done and opted to do with without being numbed#because he had to shoot a scene right after. however he sweated so much his hobbit feet came off#by the time they were put back on the medication would have worn off anyway#viggo mortensen got part of a front tooth chipped off and wanted to finish the scene before having it fixed but they forced him to go#when auditioning horses for the scene the horse kneels down to let the wounded aragorn get on a horse was disqualified for sit on the dummy#the HUGE ring they used for perspective shots

I've seen a lot of people complaining that the new River Hobbits look too much like small humans. I see their point, but have they considered: they're adorable
#lotro#ALSO#VINDICATION#not really but ive always been in the apparently very small headcanon camp#since basically forever tbh#that hobbits are an evolutionary branch of human#most likely originating from the same people as the rohirrim and the people from dale#but they moved off to the gladden fields away from other humans#started living in holes and fishing a lot#and as time passed just sort of. changed to match their environment and habits#and maybe there was some sort of magic influence that helped things along#but the changes are primarily cosmetic#i hc that theyre still actually 100% human#i know a lot of people like to imagine that theyre very different from humans and the 'yavanna made them' theory is very popular#but ngl i find that idea quite boring#but so easily people forget that they can reproduce with elves#or did no one else notice the part where its said that one of the took ancestors 'took a fairy wife'?#which. if yavanna did an aule and make hobbits before the firstborn arrived#how and why would she have made them compatible#(theres no evidence that dwarves are compatible with elves and humans and absolutely no record of a half dwarf anywhere)#(so its safe to assume that theyre NOT compatible. theres No Way no one ever tried)#(and the obvious explanation for that is that aule didnt make them compatible.)#(either because he didnt know how to or he didnt think it was important)#so anyway my line of reasoning is (unconfirmed) rumors of half hobbits half elves indicate that hobbits were designed by eru#and not a vala#and also i think it was mentioned in concerning hobbits or one of the appendices#that in universe the 'human offshoot' theory is considered pretty likely#idk exactly where tho but it stuck in my head#anyway. relevance to this post is that its perfectly reasonable for hobbits closer to their origin to LOOK more like their origin#so there

short editing session today bc I wanna go swimming, but at least I finished the chapter I started yesterday
which means only three chapters more to do!!
two of which should require only minor touch up to fit with the rest, while one will, in fact, need to be completely rewritten from scratch bc, well, it was the epilogue of the fic and now Karadeg doesn’t have a brother nor an uncle that could come and visit him lol

Okay, what are your guys’ thoughts on what the new Warner Bro Tolkien movies should be about?
There’s like, a THOUSAND ideas floating around, and as I’m currently in the process of planning to see the new Avatar movie in cinemas (yes, I know I’m late to the party), I think they should make a trilogy leading up to the War of the Last Alliance, and cast the kid who plays Lo’ak in Avatar to play young Thranduil
Kid is SERVING the young bitchy Thranduil vibes, like I could easily see this guy being the predecessor to sassy early 2000s Legolas
Tumblr media
They have the rights to film about that war, so it’s a strong potential
Again, what do you guys think the new movies will be about?

there's a moment in the second hobbit film, a flashback, where thorin's sitting down in the prancing pony inn and going straight for the food and watching as a human dude just picks up a hobbit and sets him on a barstool, right?
it's a moment that looks habitual. familiar. the human says "master saddle," the hobbit seems comfortable with it. thorin doesn't even visibly react much. but I love the thought of him quietly in the back of his mind thinking "if anyone tries that with me, by my grandfather's blood they will get stabbed," and also "I will never find it in me to respect a hobbit."
#admittedly I think the dwarves are too heavy to lift that easily but a person could still try‚ and regret it in more than one way.#the hobbit#the desolation of smaug#orig#I'm having more thinky thoughts about thorin on this watch-through#and realising that he is multiple layers of trauma and fear and horrific expectations bundled together really helps matters#though interestingly I feel like even when he doesn't yet Respect bilbo he does still want good things for him#bilbo's life in the shire is the kind of home and safety thorin feels he can never know now#not now he knows what's out there. not now he's seen what the world can do.#so every dismissive and rude comment suggesting bilbo should be back there is ABSOLUTELY what it seems to be#but it's also maybe a little ''you can have that. I can't. you can still go back and have that‚ so you should.''#anyway yes I can't remember anything i've seen about the ship I'm just poking at the films out of curiosity#the book kinda confused me as a kid when I reached the point of bilbo's betrayal#I've yet to reread as an adult and am not at that point in the films yet#but I seem to recall they presented it maybe more clearly as a kind of protecting thorin thing?#which I could buy.#bilbo's interesting. clever and mild and manipulative. I don't like him as a person but I kinda do as a character.#but thorin just… the guy feels doomed from the start. you can't put a person on that kind of pedestal without messing them up majorly.#the ''I looked at him and saw someone who could lead us as king'' moment (paraphrasing) was chilling to me#as grand and noble as it was meant to be too. but that might be what made it so tragic.#I'd apologise for these tags but I'd be lying. reserving the right to come back and shape them into coherent thoughts later though.
