red letter media but it's just me and my gf discussing why babylon 5 is everything deep space 9 tried to be but better... kinda want to write up a side by side breakdown bc as a bit of a connoisseur of 90s scifi serials, babylon 5 is one of the best I've seen and feels criminally underrated

It's been interesting getting back into both Sam/Jack and MSR at the same time, I get to compare and contrast really similar themes (secret duty, dangerous truths, aliens, government oversight, honor, loss of family, pining, devotion etc) from really different framing. The X files is a much darker show overall and Chris Carter's misogyny problem and hand of fate baby arcs are frustrating and painful, and yet the MSR fic has so much more room to be much sweeter and more openly domestic and a lot of times the stakes are lower because as much as it affects their own lives, the Syndicate and the threat of Colonization is much bigger than what they personally alone can bring about or prevent. They have guilt and repression and fear of losing each other or the work to contend with, but we're also shown that as long as they have each other they're generally okay even without the work -- I mean aimlessness and depression (and out of character writing choices) yes, but the Syndicate operations aren't that closely affected by if Mulder and Scully are in the basement office or not, so you can conjure up a wide variety of believable paths for them to be together with or without 'the files.'
Meanwhile Sam and Jack could literally be prosecuted for disobeying orders/getting involved within the same chain of command, they could get their team or the whole program taken apart thanks to that excuse in the hands of Simmons or similar, they're directly on the front lines for 8 years and they're repeatedly shown via the quantum mirror that Sam and Jack both being active members of SG1 is the only reason Earth wasn't decimated in a hostile Goa'uld invasion so they can't just resign and be together. For a second you think there's a window but then there's a new war and they make Jack everyone's boss and send Sam to a different galaxy and then put her up on a ship, and you go; Oh. So that's an endless set of circumstances, then. There's so much 'be miserably, honorably apart, serving and pining forever or the destruction of Earth will directly be your fault' baggage baked into Sam and Jack's narrative setup that you're boxed into either character-bending wish fulfillment (which is satisfying to read but hard to commit to writing ime) or the soul excoriating 'hanging on waiting for what can never be' flavor of overly believable quiet tragedy.
I'm finding I'm spending more time with the show where the skinny grey aliens with big eyes are a lot more evil and the themes are more bleak but the characters are less entirely trapped by their own best intentions 💀😭😭

Dr. Kraussen Vol. 1
Read in Royal Road
Chapter 1 - "The Doctor"
He always started his day with a cup of coffee, delicious liquid addiction. He cleaned his home, a simple one–store house and two rooms; he wore and adjusted his watch and went out once more into the world. Three hours was the maximum that he could be outside, time that had increased considerably in comparison with those poor 10 minutes with 42 seconds he had when he arrived.
People that knew Dr. Kraussen thought of him as a recluse that was nice…when he let himself be seen. He always said please and thank you, and spoke with a cute accent that mixed the round sounds of British English and the strong r’s of Russian. He helped when asked, dressed simple and was always interested in what others might say, whether it was a fun fact or the latest neighborhood gossip.
The doctor lead a good life. He adored strong flavors, rarely present in his native country’s gastronomy. Coffee, mustard, spices, chili and certain types of cheese were his favorites. Sometimes he’d mix them all in a bowl and eat it with a spoon, laying in his bed while watching TV, lazy tradition of the people in that place.
Three hours to be outside and complete his list of activities wasn’t a lot, but Kraussen made them count. Get water and food, pay taxes, take out the trash… The sun was strong even in cloudy days, but the protection he’d acquired was more than enough. For three hours, of course.
Two hours with 59 minutes and 59 seconds later, he crossed again the front door of his house. He was about to leave the food over the table, when the noise of his door being banged, and then taken down, surprised him.
“Hands up! Nobody moves!”, yelled the first armed person that entered, followed by other two.
Kraussen let go of the food, threw down the table and took cover with it from the bullets that were indiscriminately shot at him. He adjusted his glasses so they didn’t fall, took a big breath and, with a kick, sent the table flying through the air and towards his attackers to knock them down.
He ran to the second of the rooms and teared down the false wall to the left, to go down the stairs and guard himself there. He had protection against the sun but not against bullets; even a scratch was dangerous. He went down two steps at a time. Forgot to close the door. Came back to do it. Before he reached it, more people with weapons appeared in the entrance.
“Hands up!”, they yelled.
The doctor stopped mid going upstairs. His breathing was agitated by adrenaline and his mind worked at full steam. He slowly raised his hands… And, with a gesture, stole the weapon of one of them, which flew towards his hand, and he shot with it. He managed to get his attackers to retreat and take cover behind the wall, but Kraussen wasn’t a soldier, so the result was obvious. One bullet to his leg was enough to take him down. Pain expanded through his entire limb, making him close his eyes as his blood dripped. He had suffered a lot in his life, but this was the first time he was shot.
“Take off your mask, doctor.” The soldier that seemed to be the leader of the squad dangerously approached him. “We know what you are. Save us the work of taking it off ourselves.”
Kraussen thought about it. Certainly, in that moment the most logical thing was to give up, be captured and wait for a chance to ran away. To be discovered made his blood boil, but he couldn’t allow himself to die. Slowly, without breaking eye contact with his captors, he took off his watch and the mask fell. Then came out to light his green skin, his hands with three fingers and tattoos, his tentacles, the golden symbols in his face and his eyes with triangle pupils, which irises shone in a mix of brown, orange and yellow.

it's a good thing I'm too occupied with other stuff right now to draw, because my own interpretations of the razias shadow setting / characters are bouncing around in my head and they are definitely above my current skill level.

Terra Ignota fucked up my whole brain (positive). I think it's either the deepest or most pretentious (more likely both) works of fiction I've ever encountered. Ada Palmer is my new god. These books are so gender and strange and interesting and horrifying and political.
My favourite genre is Scifi Where Your Favourite Character Is A Queer War Criminal (or other monster beyond comprehension) (Machineries of Empire, The Locked Tomb, etc). In this area, Terra Ignota is a holy book.
Canner and Sniper are my precious innocent friends who can do no* wrong.
*all
(I deeply love these books, I'm just very insane about them)
SAME SAME SAME SAME SAME SAME SAME. YOURE IN SUCH GOOD COMPANY. i first read too like the lightning in 2017, promptly shoveled seven surrenders in my mouth, got the will to battle for christmas, and then spent the next three-and-change years rereading them multiple times and collecting a small cadre of weird friends i could convince to attempt it. perhaps the stars permanently rewired my brain on first readthrough. terra ignota kinda one of the lenses through which i see most things cus it came to me at the right time. touchstone of my brain and heart. also MASSIVE UPS FOR MACHINERIES OF EMPIRE AND LOCKED TOMB ASWELL LETS GOOOOOO!!!!! also off the top of my head i'll point to ann leckie's imperial radch & related books, kameron hurley's stars are legion, seth dickinson's exordia which im reading rn, and on the fantasy side of the same trope we got seth dickinson's traitor baru cormorant, n.k. jemison's broken earth trilogy, fuckin, don't feel like going upstairs to remind myself of more but yeah. i slurp compellingly fucked up people with strong motivations/principles with a straw. And good god if you like those terra ignota has like fifty of them ! Yay! christ i love these books. if you want to marinate your brain in thoughts about them i have a "ti tags" tag which is a lot of stupid memes and also some very juicy thoughts..... things to rotate... i have been rotating it all for so many years in my mind

So I live in a super conservative right wing small town.
I can access L.A. by driving about an hour and a half, which is great. HOWEVER I have to live here, and I get exhausted by the horrors every time I leave my house. It's not pretty. I won't list everything I deal with here, just trust me that it is bleak as fuck.
In a fit of hope, I went to a local bar that was having a book club and actually found some cool people there. There was even a fellow scifi fantasy nerd. So I'm going back tonight (it's monthly).
YAY book club YAY wine YAY normal fuckn people.

Hi dear friends,
The past two weeks have consisted of three infections back to back, including a finger infection on my dominant hand. So there'll be no art progress for TSL Chapter 2 for a little while.
But what I can share with you is that my untitled scifi vn project now has a name, a logo, and--an itch.io page!
Tumblr media
Yay!
It's safe to say it'll stay empty for a good long time, but in case anyone wants to bookmark it or add it to a collection, there you go!
And because I procrastinate by working on UI, I can show you a little of what Resonance in Orbit is going to look like:
It's the first time I spent a lot of time designing the settings screen! I wanted it to feel like the UI is your own little spaceship that you control. It was very fun to mess with the different displays.
That's all for now!
much love,
qk

I know this is tumblr but I'm like.... unbelievably and disproportionately bummed out that people took my "yay yippee card games and holodecks and paintings and music in star trek!" post and started discoursing about it. It wasn't even that bad, it's probably just that it's January and dark and there are horrors happening in the world and so any "well actually" or mean spirited comment on any mild, non-controversial little happy scifi post just cuts extra deep. So I've turned off reblogs 👍

Watching Halo, Episode 2
Episode 2
Ok kids, I binge-watched this entire show and took THIRTEEN PAGES of handwritten notes so I didn’t forget to talk about anything that caught me! So let’s be about it.
First off, may I say how much I appreciate that John is not a good-looking guy? He’s just a dude (the other Spartans likewise) and that sells the whole thing to me more than if they were all pretty. (Granted, I also thought Hiddleston and the cucumber guy were not pretty, so YMMV.)
Speaking of the other Spartans, how many are there? “Silver Team” implies the existence of a “Gold Team”, at the very least. And we open with a flashback to at least one getting away, or trying to—is he the only one to try, or to make it out? John apparently was supposed to go with him, or so Soren thought. He doesn’t (obviously), but he does give Soren a small headstart. (I can only assume that John/Soren is one of the top tags on AO3, this is Serious Emotional Bond stuff.) Why is Soren able to want out? Glad John didn’t shoot him.
In the present, Halsey is plotting something, because of course she is. The Spartans are trying to track John down, seemingly under some protest over whether he actually needs to be tracked down. I pegged Kai as the smartest Spartan last episode, and I’m getting confirmed in that opinion now. She questions and she thinks. Whether this is going to serve John’s arc or the UNSC, I don’t know yet.
Here we are with Kwan and Master Chief, with Kwan asking the real questions, which is a talent of hers. May I take a quick aside to point out that asteroids do not, in fact, float around that close to each other? It’s a very fun SF trope, though. Oh, so THIS is why the place is called “Rubble”. Clever. That is a seriously cool asteroid city design. YAY for someone speaking Hungarian! This show excels at showing that more than people from Iowa made it off the planet. (I appreciate all the accents to this end, as well.)
Uh, the armor’s a bit conspicuous, Chief, shoulda left that on the ship. Wow, they found Soren fast. (Has Kwan ever been off-planet before? She’s looking a little overwhelmed. Which is fair, shit is A Lot right now.) I laughed at the “mind the gap” reference. The tram thing is pure Universal Studios Ride bait.
I have a lot of feelings about Kessler and Laera, in order:
Cute kid and happy family? Oh shit they are doomed.
Otoh, Laera’s pretty glammed up, maybe she’s the sell-them-out type
Pale hair, intense eyes, Covenant destroyed her planet? Is she related to Makee?
Cute little stamp, this kid is DEFINITELY doomed
…unless they get to tragically lose Soren, instead? I TRUST NOTHING HERE
“Soren speaks of you often.” “Not that often,” Soren says flatly to the man he left behind. You talk about him constantly because you two were deeply in love, I’m calling it.
Makee is planning a mission to get the magical alien tech, full of references I would absolutely get if I were a gamer and which I instead absolutely don’t. As a fan of several long-running scifi series in an era when a lot of them are retreading ground (some brilliantly, some not), it’s novel, annoying, and deeply refreshing all at once to have to discover things as the characters do. I am still super obsessed with Makee’s costume design, and the aliens’ appearance is very well-done. They clearly put a lot of effort into making them stand up.
The UNSC brass are politicking and plotting, as the brass in any universe does, and I’m sorry, AI and cloning are never, ever good ideas in settings like this. I feel for Miranda getting constantly shut out, etc. I do wonder what the other Spartans want. Like, what are their goals? What do they think of the different people ordering them around?
Back on Rubble, Soren’s getting churros and saying “I know a guy,” which of course he does. Reth was… a choice. Ngl, this whole bit was deeply uncomfortable for me. We did get some good intel on the object and the Covenant. I absolutely appreciate Soren calling out explicitly the Mommy Dearest-ness of Halsey, she has predator vibes you can see from space. I do wish we knew more about the (apparently very few?) prisoners the Covenant takes and why and how they pick them. YIKES YIKES YIKES what did that thing just do? And who else can activate it?
And there goes John, leaving Kwan behind (so she can tragically die alongside the tragedy-bait kid??) and returning to Halsey and her creepiness. Meanwhile, Makee gets a gratuitous nude scene, which on one hand had me rolling my eyes and on the other had me glued to every detail of the construction design of that costume. So thanks, I guess, director dude.
Credits roll… wait, what do you mean, executive produced by Steven Spielberg???

I am so fascinated with the throuple thing how did that happen if you feel up to talking about it if not i totally understand. The guys are dating each other too? How do the dynamics work?
haha no worries i used to be really curious about this sort of thing before it happened to me!
so, i have been married to my husband danny for quite some time (coming up on our six year anniversary yay!) and together we are working on a series of scifi novels called neokosmos. i bring this up because of course neokosmos is involved in this story sdfjhsdf
so one day in early 2020 (yeah, during covid lockdowns, what better time) a guy shows up in the neokosmos discord! his name is brian and he is 30, which we are really excited about because a lot of the people in our community are in their early 20s and danny and i were in our late twenties at the time (i'm 30 now) so we were very interested in making a friend our age! he's an awesome writer and he had amazing takes on our characters and story and so naturally i was like okay i can't let this just be a fan relationship i need to befriend this guy outside of the server! next thing you know he is writing for us, because i can never shut up about neokosmos and he is just as obsessed with it as i am.
hilariously, when we first started writing together and getting close we made a pact to "WHATEVER WE DO, DON'T FALL IN LOVE..." which... in retrospect, is exactly what you should say to someone if you want them to fall in love with you. whoops!
the three of us ended up talking every day, playing minecraft together, and chatting on discord all the time. and when we pushed our minecraft beds together... we knew something was there...
danny and i already knew we were both polyamorous so this wasn't really like a shocking revelation that we would develop feelings for someone. then one day we got the fateful BRIAN CONFESSION LETTER, he confessed fully expecting that he would be rejected and we surprised him by being like YEAH WE ARE DOWN and the three of us quickly became a triad!
so yeah, all three of us are mutually dating each other. it started off as like, married couple with a mutual boyfriend sorta deal but obviously each combo of us has our own sort of dynamics and relationship with each other. personally i get so much joy out of seeing my two partners love each other and i know danny and brian feel the same way about our various pairings.
and it all just works! being with brian has made our lives so much better and living together has been a dream. because the relationship between danny and i was already so strong it was very easy to adapt to this new dynamic and the three of us are all extremely happy now.
and if you're wondering, we have a big king sized bed we CAN all sleep in, but brian prefers to sleep in his own room so sleeping arrangements are pretty easy hahaha.
i hope that answers your question! i'm happy to answer anything else about being in a triad. it's not something we were like actively seeking out it just kind of happened! life is crazy.

Adding to the Loki 2 reactions (with spoilers), slightly critical:
*I still like the aesthetic, the set design is great
*trying to figure out if Loki does not quite feel like Loki, because he actually is out of character or because he's in a completely different environment. I mean, he basically went from period piece-like drama and fantasy to SciFi
Plus he actually gets to built connections with other people here (outside of his family), because the show makes room for it, so that's kinda new. And has to be acted out somehow.
*Regarding those connections, I still feel Loki is a bit too emotional and touchy. Might be on purpose to make him more relatable.
(The "she'll be fine" comment after the car crash though felt Loki-ish)
He is more human in the TVA, which is connected to him not having access to his powers there.
I don't have much hope, but it would be neat to see a shift in his and Mobius' interactions once he gets to use his powers more again.
*On Mobius. Intriguing character, still don't completely buy into the buddy vibe. Mobius does care about Loki in a way and there might have been time to built somewhat of a friendship (I don't know, how much time actually passed in season 1).
But imo Mobius still treats Loki a bit like an asset. Their interactions in 2x1 are more about managing. Mobius maneuvers Loki around to keep him out of an unclear situation and in order to get information. He also needs Loki. As an Loki expert Mobius is fully aware how capable and valuable for a fight Loki is. Loki also knows more about what's happening to the time line, so Mobius has to keep him stable and work with him.
I still don't feel he takes him completely seriously. It all seems a bit patronizing.
Otoh Mobius takes a great risk to keep Loki. Might make sense given the overall situation, but is a bit inconsistent.
They should not have forced the buddy comedy imo. I would have enjoyed enemies reluctantly working together way more.
But Loki needs a friend so I take what I can get I guess. And at least it's Owen Wilson.
(I still would love to see Mobius nearly shitting himself over a display of Loki's true power. He is way to nonchalant, which comes with his position and experience of course, but well...)
*Yeah yeah, we all love OB, that's a given
*does time travel in the MCU work like this? Idc, it was funny. The simultaneous conversation with past and present OB was a nice touch, funny and well done.
*was the time slip a one ep kinda deal? Trailer indicates it wasn't. We'll see.
*Hunter B15 being the moral compass, important.
*That TVA council seemed a bit all over the place. What's the course of action apart from finding Sylvie? But yay, Liz Carr.
*So Sylvie thinks Loki's dead-dead? Makes sense, that she would try to built an actual life after everything. The post credit scene was a bit anvil on the head, but I get it in regards to Sylvie's journey.
Btw my guess is Loki will make a sacrifice in the end, but that will probably be leaving Sylvie and Mobius behind so they can have an actual life.
And Loki will be alone again.
It would fit. It would be dramatic enough, but Disney would still keep the character alive just in case. Loki's a cash cow after all.

so I just figured it out
woooooo
yay
my scifi bullshit makes a bit of sense
I'm so tired
my brain wasent getting it until I went on wiki pages
turns out I just used neofunctionalization and warped it into some conscious decision with a complicated little process of killing cells and replacing them and making more genomes to get more patterns to make new functions and stuff
it's like messing around with Legos but instead sometimes you get another box of legos thats mostly the same but with a few different pieces of Legos then building the same thing but kinda different then rotating them out with the original thing that was built, deconstructing or destrotying the original thing then rinse and repeat
it dosent make that much sense honestly but I figured it out
@kenonade
you will get your fish hyper evolution explained after I take a nap
thank you all for waiting
