Ooooh lets see what I remember-

Charlie reigned supreme- like really and truly so many blogs and so, so much content was Charlie Charlie Charlie, everyday, all the time and I mean he still is insanely popular but definitely back in the day Charlie in the show and of the cast was easily the most popular, like it felt like 7/10 posts were about him. Glenn was next in line but I do distinctly remember Kaitlin and Rob didn't have as much content about them, at a certain point I kinda was the Kaitlin Olson tag, that's not me being up myself I just used to be in her tag constantly and it'd be a lot of posts in a row of just me- the girls of the series def didnt always get the love they should and I'm not really sure that's changed much ☠ But yeah this was also around the time that everyone was also going gaga about Pacific Rim so that def made Charlie even more popular too.

Macdennis has always, always been a popular pairing but their popularity 100% has skyrocketed the past few years, and I mean SKYROCKETED. Like they're on par with some wildly popular mlm ships nowadays and it's lowkey so funny to see em in the ring with like. destiel 😂 now when I go in the tag it seems half the posts feature mac and dennis, which is notable to me bc Mac especially was kinda... Unloved is not the right way to phrase it bc fans have always loved him but Rob/Mac def didn't get /as/ much love back in the day. Like people often spoke of him as the weakest character but after season 13 I think he's gained more appreciation.

Fans have def gotten much bigger on theories and stuff these days, I'm sure they had em back then too but it wasn't as prevalent and none particularly stand out, it was usually just the "X characters are secretly sleeping together" type beat. I also remember a popular theory that everyone was going to die in the inevitable series finale but then the show never got cancelled and I dont know what that was about?

Reddit has always been messy and there def was a pretty big us vs them type vibe between sunny fans back then- though it was less reddit vs tumblr and more "straight dude bros" vs everyone else like I remember so many posts being like "Ugh straight dude bros don't get the show" I probably made some of those posts 😂 Lots of "Mac isn't actually gay" too which is very, very funny in hindsight- No one ever thought they'd canonize his sexuality.

Ummm... Probably the most notable thing to me tho is seeing how popular the cast has become, like 8 years ago Danny was the only "Big name" Like the media absolutely spoke of the show as these no name people and Danny Devito. I mean that was not totally the case for Charlie, he was becoming more and more popular and gaining traction in the mainstream with pacific rim and the likes but with Glenn, Kaitlin and Rob they were definitely not super well known outside Big always sunny fans so seeing them go from that to Rob being besties with Ryan Reynolds and stuff has honestly been super interesting and funny. Like I remember posting rob and kaitlins wedding pictures and getting so many people going WAIT THEYRE MARRIED?? it was hilarious to see the transition.

Yeah those are probably the biggest changes I can think of- it's gotten more popular which explains most of it, shipping has def become a much bigger thing as well, ships were pretty chill back then, there wasn't too much fic or art so thats different now :)

OH BUT ART! There's always been wonderful fan artists but nowadays wowee!! some amazing art for the series, like much more abundant! That's the gist of it :)

It always baffles me how much people believe that their ideas about gay sex and shipping come from nowhere when it's clearly just thinly veiled homophobic and sexist stereotypes that fem=bottom=submissive we’re all unconsciously taught growing up in homophobic societies (with racist undertones anytime half of a ship is not white). i believe it to be unconcsious bias, im not blaming people for not having unpacked why they jump to headcanon the character performing the most traditional masculinity to be a top, but it’s getting tiring. Especially when authors refuse to question themselves when getting callled out for fetichizing, say, latino men and reducing them to sex-obsessed, domineering, possessive, bordeline abusive partners. I promise you your tendency to make the more traditionally masculine one a top with a dominant attitude does not come from yourself entirely. It’s not something you just “happen” to consistently repeat your work for no subjacent reason. You have every right to hold these headcanons, and to like exploring these dynamics, i sometimes even agree with those interpretations myself ! But we all should be careful and conscious of the why, what pushed us to hold these headcanons, and check it’s not rooted in shallow gendered and racialized stereotypes.

I'm with you there on preferring bottom!Alastor and getting squicked out by top!Alastor. The squick is worse for me when searching radioapple than radiostatic stuff, and I think it has more to do with the egregious amount of uke-fication of Lucifer that I've seen. Vox and Al get it sometimes too, let's be real that's gonna happen in any mlm ship. But I feel like it happens SO often to Lucifer, mostly cause he's small and cute, that people completely forget he's the oldest and most powerful entity in hell.

He would NOT be genuinely scared or intimidated by Al or any other sinner for that matter and Al would NOT be able to physically overpower or threaten Luci. It just feels so wildly out of character for me that any of the appeal of the ship/characters is gone at that point.

That's literally it! It's the uke-fication of Lucifer. That's it. Lucifer would never feel threatened by Alastor. He would never be overpowered by Alastor. So when I see depictions of Alastor successfully intimidating Lucifer, or overpowering him at all, it just throws me out of the story.

Lucifer's been alive longer than Hell. Alastor's measely 100+ years of being alive is nothing compared to his millennia+ lifespan. And yeah, Lucifer is the strongest person in Hell, he could beat Alastor in any fight, no question. He has no reason to be scared or threatened by him.

And look, there are ways to get Lucifer to a point of being afraid. There are always a way to make characters act in a way you wouldn't typically see. In fact, Lucifer, the biggest, baddest person in Hell, being threatened by something would be a huge thing for his character and for the story. That could totally work!

But when it comes from Alastor just going into his demon form, or looming over Lucifer, I just 🥲 it takes me out of the story. I can't. Alastor may be a big bad Overlord, and he's dangerous for sure, but like...power-wise he is just not on Lucifer's level and Lucifer knows that--Alastor knows that--and this is what makes their dynamic so, SO interesting, especially if they're in a relationship or slowly building into a relationship. That's what makes it so spicy and flavorful. The push and pull. The insecurity and emotion. The complex dynamic between them.

I think you're right about it making bottom!Lucifer and top!Alastor lose its appeal. I went back through my Twitter bookmarks yesterday and found a few top!Alastor's & bottom!Lucifer's that I've saved, but I've come to dislike that generalized characterization of it so much that I avoid it it like the plague too.

And like you said, there's no hate to those who enjoy it. This is fandom and people are allowed to write, draw, and do what they want. It's all fiction and it's not hurting anyone.

I just don't like the top!Alastor & bottom!Lucifer dynamic in most fan-arts, and I don't click onto fics with it cause I just don't want to subject myself to an unenjoyable time 😂 I'm here to have fun too, afterall.

some of yall are avoidant in the strangest ways when it comes to acknowledging the presence of emotional interconnection - and the decisions driven by them - amongst characters in a story. especially romantic, but i've seen it happen for like. literally anything.

i say strange cause i'll see someone say "X story is about LOVE!" and then turn right around and say that acknowledging the fact that a character's choice is partially or largely fueled by that love cheapens their narrative or deprives the character of agency. as if love, a strong narrative, and chracter agency cannot possibly coexist. ???

and sure, yeah, in certain circumstance it IS simply incorrect to make out a character's motivations to be driven by/for another character. but sometimes it's like. you think the very presence of this interconnection - romantic, platonic, familial, or otherwise - cheapens the narrative even in moments (or within entire narratives) where these connections are The Whole Damn Point.

Take the boobies scene vs the van scene for example.

Boobies scene: the intention is clearly laid out in the dialogue. There is one way to interpret the scene, there’s nothing extra that seeing directions in the script adds

Van scene: there are many different interpretations to this scene, including the direct intention of the creators which is not always clear in the dialogue/acting choices. So seeing the script, we can ALL understand that it is canonical that Will is lying about El’s feelings and we can ALL understand that Jonathan knows that he is because that’s exactly what they say they are trying to do when it was something left up for interpretation upon initial watching (that will stay that way until we get answered questions and wrapped up storylines, the duffers can’t just give us all the intentional dialogue at once because they trust their audience’s intelligence).

We know what Nancy saw because she told us what she saw. And we know how it made her feel because she showed how it made her feel. Her emotions and her words are not up for interpretation, it’s clear in their deliberate choices

Whereas the Will and Mike scene purposefully makes unclear choices to leave questions unanswered. And we know that is does with how coded their scenes have been throughout this season.

The elmax scene is the same thing, we see that they’re happy to see each other and we see that El revives her. There are no unanswered questions because this moment (like Nancy’s visions) isn’t a storyline that’s been stretched out across five seasons (like how Mike and Will’s relationship has been), it’s directly related to the action and main plot and questions need to be answered NOW.

We’re voting for byler because we want to understand the coded scenes and cautious yet deliberate acting/direction choices and want to know which interpretation lines up with the director’s intention. As the director’s intention is what is going to propel us into season five.

tbh i don't really have any on either ! im not a big follower on any of the players listed, not cus like they all suck and their ships suck or something, it's just ! the players happen to just not be my favs! i don't hate em, but i don't u know? love them enough to take real interest and learn more about them myself, and that's just a personal me thing! i feel like id know more about bron/kyrie and be more interactive with them if i came into the fandom earlier to watch its VERY interesting storyline unfold in all its dramatic king and shadow chaos, but i was busy shaving my hedgehog and i don't have enough of the fueled want to go back and check their details myself. BUT!!@ again that doesn't mean EITHER is bad, and since i don't have the experience to speak GOOD good on either, i don't have the experience to speak the BAD bad on either! Both the ships are like! There! And it's cool, do whatever! They're cool !
