Note
1, 2, 6, 7, 10, 20 and 26 asks, I included question 26 a few minutes ago
Thank you!
1. Who is your favorite character(s)?
I’ve discussed my current ones already but my first favorite characters were Nishiki, Yoriko, Hinami, and the very guy who got me into the whole series, Tsukiyama. So glad they all remained consistent and important parts of the story that were never taken for granted or disregarded by the main characters right.
2. And your favorite ship?
I ship rather like a particular eater. I take bits and pieces of the fine meals you have prepared for yourselves and I congratulate everyone on their tastes! I enjoy them all in moderation so long as they are not illegal. Some more than others. (Utaren, Houtata, Arieto etc.) But will I dine upon those when serving myself, regardless of how appealing I find them? Nay. Should you follow me home and see what I think of, or consume, you will see me over the ship equivalent of a basket of uncooked potatoes covered in whipped cream, (MutsKanae) and a combination of caesar salad dressing and a singular green pepper. (Furutui) Judge me for my choices and I agree but tell me to stop and I will refuse. But it does change frequently so tomorrow who knows. However, it will never be wholly sensical. I thrive on crack pairings. I think I effectively murdered that metaphor.
6. Which character do you find most useless or indifferent to the story?
I want to say every character serves some kind of purpose, but Suzuya’s squad besides Hanbee kind of didn’t really need to be there. Like you could’ve mashed them all into one third character and been none the worse off. That said I don’t mind that they are there and I wouldn’t change it, I just don’t think they need to be.
7. Which character(s) do you dislike? For a time, Ayato. Fun design, annoying kid. But he was already beaten up (and actually learned a lesson from it instead of just contemplating how sad his life is cough cough Kaneki) so I don’t have any remaining qualms.
10. Which character deserved more? Or was it more unfair?
Rize, but I talk more about that in 26. Mutsuki! My son, what did they do to you. He is riddled with transphobic messages but I will ignore them because he is mine now and he cannot be hurt anymore, what do you mean he joined a different branch of the CCG upon its collapse and abandoned his friends he’s healing with them, trust me.
20. If you could trade coffee for anything else to be food for ghouls, what would it be?
Okay assuming we’re still operating under the rule it has to be a one-ingredient thing that can’t be mixed with others without tasting disgusting anyways… I’m going to say straight vanilla extract and look yes I know, tumblr meme but that’s not actually why I said that, can you IMAGINE the awkward workarounds they’d have to figure out to justify it. Anteiku’s a bakery with a suspicious number of vanilla flavored products. Tsukiyama the baker. A human takes a swig of a ghoul’s drink and dies. Beautiful.
26. If you could sacrifice any character to bring another back, who would it be?
I would like to trade in a Kaneki for a Rize. Specifically I want him to drown in the dragon with Nimu while Dragon Rize actually gets revived, autonomy, personality, mental function and all. Changed? Obviously. But free again in a world where she doesn’t have to run from herself. I just want to see her get to be herself without the objectified lens of a man over her to make her some kind of driving force, regret, etc. Or her own actions trying to bury the scared kid she once was through murder and indulgence. She was kind of on a self-destructive warpath from the moment of her escape, and regardless of how her intent was to distance herself from the garden in every way possible, counterintuitively her suppressed fear would’ve ended up with her right back in the garden. Anyways all in all I want a character who Kaneki has not deemed “good” to be given another chance. Kaneki’s fixed world (or world that “just is” according to him) is not a paradise for ghouls and humans alike, it is paradise for Kaneki. I would like an outlier.

Keiji and Sara’s relationship throughout yttd
In which I analyze the found family dynamic between Sara and Keiji then nobody reads it. But jokes aside, I realized back when that anon asked me for my thoughts on Sara that I had enough thoughts on the relationship between these two alone for its own meta so here goes. What Sara and Keiji’s relationship means in the grand scheme of yttd.
ALSO THIS IS NOT SHIPPING SHIPPERS GET THE FUCK AWAY
Sara when she meets Keiji is distrustful of him. And how can she not be? The guy has some creepy bags under his eyes, doesn’t seem to care about the situation, and for no reason is gravitating towards her. And his response when she asks why the hell he keeps putting a random stranger in charge? “Because you’re cute.” Yeah. I’d stay within 50 feet of this guy too Sara. Especially when he’s not spilling a word about himself.
Alright we might as well get the gross part out of the way. To clear things up. In the Japanese version, the word he uses “Kawai” can be seen as a more fatherly word to use with a kid. But the comments about going on dates from himself and from Shin? Those are still there. And I still think they’re really uncomfortable and wish they weren’t in the game period but we can get thematic significance out of them.
We still don’t know Keijis reasons in game for being attached to Sara. My theory? She’s his handicap. He was told to get close to the higher scorer who could easily backstab him, and he’d be stuck with her. It just kinda makes sense to me. But since that’s just a theory I won’t lean to heavily on it for support. But let’s talk about his comments.
Keiji… well, it’s shown at many points in the game that Keiji just thinks of himself as doomed to be a bad person. It can be seen during his day two negotiations when he calls himself a killer and explains he can’t even trust himself so Sara shouldn’t really bother and more explicitly so is the classroom scene between him and Ranmaru where he says he isn’t fit to protect Sara because of his sins. The flirting is both a way to distract people, and to put distance between himself and Sara. He’s not really “protecting” her.
Okay gross bit nobody wants to talk about is over I promise we won’t talk about it again. Let’s talk about Russian Roulette. In this scene, Keiji once again tries to make Sara the leader with no explanation, but then, Sara yells at him, something he didn’t expect. And through this he actually reveals something huge. The source of his trauma. His shooting. For Keiji to have actually revealed something that big, I think that this is the first moment he began to see Sara past whatever reason he first started making her a leader. This is the beginning of their bond.
This bond gets solidified over chapter 1-2s investigation. Keiji is still putting her in charge because his handicap said to build her up for whatever reason, but they’re able to have chats, and she keeps picking at his armor. He reveals his dark sense of humor to her, and she, suspicious just sort of keeps him at arms length. Also she rides his shoulders to screw in a light and he complains which is funny. The scene post Nao also helps the two of them sharpen investigative skills together, as they discuss the mystery of Miley, and Mishimas head.
Then another significant scene. The white room. I call this scene significant because, instead of letting Sara investigate the gruesome scene of the first trial, Keiji for the first time, allows Sara to walk out. Something that will become relevant later but until then, Keiji has begun to put Sara’s well-being above serving whatever purpose he had by building her up. So keep that in your pocket while we go over the main game.
There’s only two points for the main game I want to cover. While Keiji and Sara do put their heads together a few times, Sara still doesn’t fully trust him, so I will only go over 1. When Shin brings up Kai’s emails. Keiji has been fully logical this whole time, questioning everyone’s alibis including Nao’s who he saw the emotional plea from, but when Sou brings up potentially damning evidence of Sara, he just asks if he read the emails wrong. 2. When Sara is panicking over being chosen for the final round, Keiji loudly shouts “GET A GRIP SARA!” With a serious expression. Before quickly backtracking and going back to a devil may care expression. This shows he is both already emotionally attached to Sara, but unwilling to stake himself towards giving himself to a new cause.
Anyways, he stops her from pressing the button blah blah blah, onto chapter 2! I’ve made a post about this before but it seems as early as here, Keiji is trying to talk Sara down from pushing herself further. But at this point, Sara has already dedicated herself to the role because her best friend died due to her priority to protect everyone. Keiji sees the problem and he tries to get her to rest up, but he still doesn’t spend the time to have a serious talk about it because as he says in the classroom. He isn’t fit to protect her. He doesn’t think of himself as a good person who can help her. He thinks of himself as a murderer and he doesn’t allow himself to recover from the trauma.
Sara however is starting to rely more on Keiji. He’s been willing to comfort her in her times of grief and furthermore, she has something to relate to him on. They both have deaths of important people in their lives they feel responsibility for.
There’s also the fact that Keiji sees a lot of his old self in Sara. An idealistic person, being beaten down, and worrying over the idea they might be becoming a bad person. He feels the same as her.
Not to mention… Keiji follows through on his promises. He actually tells Sara about the person he respected like he said he would which establishes a further sense of trust.
However, something that tears that sense of trust apart is the tokens scene. When Keiji doesn’t even let Sara hold 50 tokens, it raises suspicion. Sara already knows he shot a person- what more could he have to hide? That scares her away. The negotiation event is an attempt for Keiji to win back her trust. But it slowly turns into Keiji’s self-loathing session. And his declaration maybe Sara shouldn’t trust him.
However, time passes enough (and Keiji supports Sara enough in the final attraction) for them to get together and investigate in 2-2. And there’s a lot of moments I can talk about there so I’ll be just doing a few rapidfire things. So first, Sara is in peak weird girl mode and Keiji can hardly control her chaos. Second, Keiji makes a full on decision at one point to go against Sara when she’s putting herself in danger of getting caught for their search so they can hide. Third, his response to “I don’t intend to die” when he asks “will you die with me” is that’s a good answer.
And fourth… a moment I really wanna touch on… Keiji watches something that could easily incriminate Sara. It’s not just some word of mouth thing like with Shin who lied about things several times before this point. But in that moment, he still relies on Sara and says he wouldn’t feel bad betting his life on her. The message is clear. Keiji supports Sara unconditionally.
Now let’s talk about Keiji totally dropping Sara’s ass with the card trades.
The way Keiji makes his trades is very telling. He first, steals a keymaster card from either Sou or Kanna to give to Sara. This is supporting Sara, but it’s doing it in a way that supports his view of himself. That he’s a scumbag who would steal someone’s immunity just to give it to someone he likes more. And would a shithead like that be “worthy” of sacrificing themselves and taking the card for Sara? (And he knew she had it. Qtaro had to tell him for their plan to happen) no. Instead he essentially opts for a revenge plot. A plan to ensnare Shin and kill him for pawning off the sacrifice to Sara. Basically, he wanted to fuck up Shin like how he fucked up Megumi. Nice going Keiji. This is… kind of his low point in the story.
But 3-1….. man this chapter hits in all the right ways. I don’t remember 3A that much, (although I do know that Keiji shows a lot of concern over Sara potentially being triggered by Joe memorabilia) and also if you fail the Keiji Midori fight you can have Sara attempt to tag Keiji and he rejects. And how can we forget… the mr policeman flashback. As Sara says, this is Keiji’s first time opening up on his own.
And then… coffin saga. Sara through everything is not willing to let Keiji die. Although she’s had her ups and downs with him, leaving him to die is inconceivable to her with everything they’ve been through together. So she opts to sign the contract both times she is offered it.
Keiji clearly is somebody important to Sara. Important enough that Ranmaru bringing him up is enough to snap her out of her murderous trance. Enough that she throws logic out the window when she has a sign he’s okay.
Likewise, the scene in the classroom for Keiji is… a huge step. When he’s alone with Ranmaru, who is unstable, in that classroom, his priority is Sara. He turns his back to the threat to hold Sara and try and make sure she’s okay- dumb move, but it shows how far he’s come.
And again, I want to reiterate- Keiji is Sara’s anchor. At the banquet when Sara is about to give up, she imagines Keiji talking to her which brings her back in the game. Much like Joe did back in chapter 2. The message is palpable. Keiji is Sara’s new Joe. And when Keiji comes back to comfort her? He’s now fully willing to sacrifice himself. It winds up not being needed seeing as Qtaro is the one that died. But in that moment, we see Keiji has made a huge leap from chapter 2. He almost sacrificed himself for Gin. And he would’ve used his final moments to comfort Sara. He’s embraced that he’s a father figure. He allows himself to be a good person.
Anyways I don’t know how to conclude this and I’ve been writing for hours. Bababooey.

The Voyage So Far: Dressrosa (Part Two)

wild how this is upwards of 750 chapters in and yet i still get a big dumb smile whenever luffy declares he’s going to be king of the pirates. one piece is a series very much driven by its main characters and their goals and dreams- i don’t think it would be nearly as good if the main character was anyone but monkey d. luffy.
personally, i always just feel kind of proud whenever he says this, because- yeah!! he is!! that’s luffy, he’s going to be king of the pirates, and we’ve known that since day fucking one.
Tumblr media
i really think there’s something to be said about usopp never taking credit for saving luffy and law from sugar. it’s arguably his greatest feat in the entire series thus far- an impossible, perfect shot across an entire country, with an angry mob inches from his back- and he never even tells anybody he did it. he’s come a long way from someone who tells tall tales about heroic acts he never did to someone who doesn’t even feel the need to take credit for ones he really did, so long as his friends are safe.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
i really like how corazon’s introduction and characterization throughout the flashback is handled. at the start of law’s flashback, we know a few things about him already: that he’s someone law loved very much, and that he was killed by doflamingo. we know how this ends.
but then cora is introduced as a clumsy mute weirdo who nearly kills law as one of the very first things he does, and we as the audience aren’t really sure how to reconcile that- and then the rest of the flashback is us, along with law, slowly discovering what a complicated and contradictory but ultimately good person he is. something very similar happens with the asl flashback- we know the endpoint of luffy and ace’s relationship, but the flashback is all about how they got there, from attempted murder to willing self-sacrifice.
Tumblr media
i think it’s really cool the way law and doflamingo’s backstories are layered together. they’re characters who exist with a lot of parallels and similarities between them already, which is something they’re both clearly aware of- i’ve mentioned before i think the only real difference between them is that law got corazon where doflamingo got the executives- and presenting their backstories simultaneously only makes that more obvious.
Tumblr media
i’ve always found it so interesting that we get what’s pretty much our only substantial exposition about the will of d direct from a former celestial dragon. it makes sense- cora’s basically the only character we’ve met who both has this information and is willing to share it-  but i don’t know, there’s something that feels very poetic to me about him having this information that’s clearly been suppressed and hidden by the dragons and willingly choosing to share it in order to help protect law, a D, who should technically be the very enemy he was once taught to hate and fear.
i really like corazon.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
it fucks me up that we can tell the exact moment cora dies from the moment law starts making noise again.
Tumblr media
this might be a controversial take? i’m not sure. but i like baby five. i think her and sai’s relationship is really sweet, and people might complain about her getting off easy or whatever but i’m honestly glad she gets a happy ending after being thoroughly emotionally abused and broken her entire life. and on a lighter note, she’s also just a fun character to watch through the whole arc- the running gag with her crying whenever law glares at her is still one of my favorites in the whole series.
Tumblr media
the shot of robin’s bloody back is a favorite of mine, because it’s a reveal that doesn’t get lingered on at all, and yet at once it gives the entire proceeding scene a lot more weight when we understand just how much pain she must’ve been in the entire time. and yet she never even flinched or faltered while protecting rebecca. nico robin is very, very strong.
Tumblr media
there’s something so deliciously fitting about diamante’s final fall ending with him cracking his head on scarlett’s grave, and something so lovely about kyros and rebecca finally getting their proper reunion there, when neither of them ever really got a chance to mourn.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
law’s line about the strawhats trailing nothing but miracles in their wake is one of the first ones i always think of when i think about the strawhats in general and luffy in particular, mostly because it’s so true. from the very beginning, the strawhats have been doing the impossible, from sailing to the sky to breaking in and out of the world’s greatest prison, and law saw that and staked all his hopes on it and they did not let him down.
also i think it’s very cool of law to, when held at gunpoint and down an arm, grin, flip doflamingo off, and tell him to eat shit and that luffy is going to kick his ass. love that for him.
Tumblr media
i think dressrosa does a very good job of making the victory against doflamingo equally law’s and luffy’s. they cooperate and trade off fighting him throughout the arc to great effect, and i think it’s pretty clear that neither of them could have tackled the massive challenge of dressrosa alone.
while the final fight is luffy’s, it’s made clear that that’s only after law’s done absolutely everything he could and spent the majority of the arc distracting doflamingo, keeping him occupied, and even fucking shredding his insides with pure radiation before finally needing to tap out. i think it’s a good balance, given that luffy is the protagonist but law’s grudge against doflamingo is the driving force behind the entire arc.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
conqueror’s haki clashes are always very cool, pretty much regardless of who or where or why, but the one between luffy and doflamingo is a favorite.
Tumblr media
one of the things that’s always impressed me about one piece in comparison to other shounen series is how it handles its powerscaling- in that it does it well with a gradual increase and villains who vary widely in strength instead of every arc necessarily needing to be bigger and better than the last- and i think the way it handles powering up the main characters is a big part of that.
through the entirety of one piece thus far, i’d say luffy has had three major power-ups- second and third gear in enies lobby, haki at the timeskip, and gear four here in dressrosa (an argument could also be made for ryuuou in wano, but i think that’s less major than these others). this helps prevent runaway powerscaling and also makes new power-ups feel like a genuine event, which i really like.
Tumblr media
i once referred to luffy as ‘hopebringer’ in a conversation with friends, and it’s a descriptor for him i think sums up really well how he manages to save so many people while insistently not being a hero. luffy inspires people, inspires whole countries, starting all the way back with coby in romance dawn. it’s one of the reasons i think it’s fitting how thoroughly he’s associated with the dawn.
Tumblr media
doflamingo is very, very scary. which is interesting, because he’s indisputably less powerful someone like kaidou, but at the same time i find him a much scarier villain, and i think it comes down to doflamingo’s gleeful, wanton cruelty. not that kaidou is in any way shape or form a nice person, but our first introduction to doflamingo is him forcing marines to attack each other just because he’s a little bored. he hurts people just because he can, and finds it funny.
Tumblr media
relating to my earlier comment about hope, i really like how the whole country comes together at the end to cheer luffy on and count down to his return. it makes it feel all the more triumphant when it does, especially for the citizens of dressrosa who’ve been suffocating under doflamingo’s rule for years and can finally, finally see freedom.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
other people have put a lot more thought of the symbolism of doflamingo’s eyes and glasses than i intend to, but i’ll settle for saying that it’s the breaking of the glasses, before anything else, before the birdcage even vanishes from the sky and everyone is safe, that shows us that, at long last, doflamingo is well and truly defeated. his glasses break, and so does his power.
Tumblr media
i’ve written a longer post about it before (here) but it’s a recurring motif that one piece’s worst villains are those that steal people’s freedom, including, in the cruelest cases, the freedom to express their emotions openly. we see it with koala and the celestial dragons, with the failed smile fruits in wano, and here, too, with kyros. and, much like koala, triumph for him means finally being able to cry.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
i mentioned it back in the first post, but i’m so, so happy rebecca and kyros get the happy ending they deserve. they’ve both been fighting a war that they never should have had to for years and years, and they both deserve to get to just live, now, peaceful and quiet and together and surrounded by flowers.
Tumblr media
i really dig the note dressrosa ends on. it’s happy, of course, obviously, with the liberation of the country, kyros and rebecca’s happy ending, the creation of the grand fleet, even law getting some degree of closure through his talk with sengoku, but it also leaves this massive, gaping question- what now?
in a way, doflamingo’s speech here follows up on law’s new era speech from punk hazard. luffy and law have just thrown a major wrench into the delicate power equilibrium of the entire new world, and we have all these characters out there who might be affected, who might want to take advantage, who might try to seize the throne.

Prisoner - Part 14
Tumblr media
February, 1067
Henry Cavill is a respected Norman baron who has been tasked with finding Lady Thomasin, an ill-tempered Saxon noblewoman, and returning her to London so the king can marry her off to a cruel Norman invader. The two grow close during the long journey, and Henry puts his own life in danger (more than once) to protect the woman he loves.
Masterlist
This chapter sucks but it’s about to get super good!
Tumblr media
Thomasin went straight to church in the morning to confess. She liked and trusted Elaine, but she wasn’t comfortable sharing her innermost thoughts with her yet, especially since her daughter was likely to eavesdrop.
Not that she particularly trusted William’s priest to keep her confidence, especially considering what she planned to confess.
Her conversation with Charlie pricked at her mind like a sewing needle hidden in a bed might prick at her body.
Thomasin lowered herself to her knees and made the sign of the cross. “Bless me, Father, for I have sinned. It has been three months since my last confession.” It was the custom to confess at least once a month, but the past year’s events had altered everyone’s routines.
“What are your sins, daughter?”
“I have been unkind. I have blasphemed. I have not loved my neighbors. I have not kept the Sabbath day. I have been . . . amorous.” These were mostly the same sins as usual, but the amorousness was a new addition thanks to that week she spent in Henry’s lap. “That’s all I can remember.”
“Are you sure of that?” asked the priest.
Thomasin took a deep breath. “No. I have not yet - that is, I’m considering another sin. You won’t betray my confidence, Father, will you? That must surely be a sin. Is it not?”
“It is. No, child, I won’t betray your confidence and share your secrets. What is this sin you consider?”
“I’m thinking of . . . lying . . . to the king.”
There was a long pause on the other end of the curtain. “Explain.”
All at once, Thomasin’s story came rushing out starting with the night the Cavills took her prisoner to Charlie’s idea that she lie to the king about her virginity. “And I know I mustn’t bear false witness against my neighbor, but I am not bearing false witness against my neighbor, only myself. You see?”
The priest was silent for a long time. “Would it truly be so bad to marry Lawrence?”
“Yes!” He drove his wife to commit self-murder. Didn’t he? He didn’t seem actively cruel. Did he truly become so angry that he beat his wife until she lost the child in her belly? It seemed to Thomasin that he couldn’t be bothered to do such a thing, that he didn’t feel anything strongly enough to act in such a way – to act at all, really.
“I think so,” Thomasin amended. “I can’t be sure. But it cannot be good.” Of that, she was quite certain.
“Is that the only reason you don’t wish to marry him?” asked the priest.
“There’s Henry, too, of course.” She swallowed hard. “I cannot bear the thought of Henry being with someone else.” The words stuck in her dry throat like fish bones. Lord. That was the first time she’d admitted it. It was painfully true. The idea of Henry bedding another woman, her bearing his children – it made her sick to her stomach.
The priest sighed. “It is never easy to follow God’s laws. We all must make sacrifices to enter His Kingdom, for the road to Heaven is narrow and steep.”
“You think I ought to marry Lawrence? Don’t you know what happened to his last wife?”
“Seek solace in the spiritual world. Devote yourself to God. It is through Him that you will find comfort and joy.”
Thomasin had to literally bite her tongue to keep from lashing out. Wouldn’t God want His children to be happy? Didn’t He want Lawrence to be punished?
The priest told her to recite certain prayers to atone for her sins. She thanked him as graciously as possible and nearly stomped out of the chapel.
She was being childish, she knew, but she could not help it. Most girls were married off at fourteen to men they did not know. She was some twenty years old and unwed. She spent her life being coddled and guarded by her father. And now she was a piece of chattel to be traded by men who did not know her or care for her wellbeing.
She knew in her heart that Henry wouldn’t let that happen. He’d give his arm for her if she asked him to. But it might not be enough.
She believed that he was a finer swordsman that Lawrence – better than even King William, perhaps – but she also believed his honor made him vulnerable. Henry might be the finer warrior, but she suspected Lawrence had a great and dark mind. That could be just as dangerous. Sometimes more so.
Henry ordered her to let him deal with the matter. It was the only thing he ever truly asked of the woman he held so dearly and treated with such generosity and respect. But if it was in her power to preserve the life and limb of the man to whom she owed her own, how could she not? Surely he would understand. He must.
***
The next few days numbered among the most difficult in Thomasin’s life. She felt sick even after her courses passed; she’d worked herself into a fine state. She had an episode like this when she was young, around the time of her mother’s death. The healer, a monk, called it hysteria. She’d been blessedly free of it since then – it didn’t even happen when her father got sick – but now it was back, and it would not go away.
One of the Saxon prisoners died – of what, Thomasin did not know – and two more pledged their loyalty to William, even though it meant giving up everything they owned, including their dignity. They made their pledge in front of the entire court just before supper.
Thomasin and Henry were seated at the table at opposite sides, one chair over from each other. They could steal glances at one another during the meal, but they could not speak. Thomasin supposed that was the point.
Lawrence had taken to sitting next to her most nights. They didn’t speak. Lawrence had ceased with the pleasantries after her comment about his last wife. He ignored her as much as possible, but he sneered whenever she spoke.
Thomasin understood that he didn’t want this any more than she did, but he needed a wife to produce heirs and Thomasin was a gift from the king. He couldn’t refuse. He did still get pleasure out of the arrangement, for seeing him with Thomasin upset Henry to the point where he could hardly hold back his anger. Between Henry’s jealousy and Thomasin’s feistiness, conquering her was sure to be excellent sport.
The Saxon knights came forward and fell to their knees before the king and his wife and made their pledges. The other Saxons in attendance – mostly women, but a handful of warriors and former nobles that pledged themselves to the Normans early on – showed a range of emotions. Some of the men applauded their brothers for being sensible; others appeared to be ashamed. Most of the women looked like the wanted the whole thing over and done with, especially Elaine, who knew most of the Saxon prisoners either from tending their wounds or meeting them at court before the Norman invasion.
Henry’s reaction was surprising. He glared at the trencher of food in front of him, nostrils flared and jaw clenched as though he were the one being forced to swallow his pride. Thomasin made no effort to hide her concern, and neither did Charlie.
He, of course, knew about Cerdic’s presence in the dungeon, and he worried that Henry would allow his emotions to get the best of him. Frankly, he didn’t understand why Henry was so upset. He thought Cerdic was dead already; soon enough he would be. Perhaps he was feeling guilty for his part in the conquest. Thomasin had his head in knots.
During the applause that followed the oaths, Henry shoved away from the table and made a beeline for the main doors without offering any excuse or explanation.
Thomasin looked quizzically at Charlie, who sat directly across from her. He shook his head. She stood up and went after him anyway.
The large corridor was mostly empty, except for a young couple kissing deeply in a shadowed corner and a handful of female servants walking back and forth between the hall and the kitchens. They gossiped as they walked, paying no attention to those around them.
“Henry,” Thomasin called, scurrying over to him. He had his shoulder leaned against the wall and he was rubbing his face with his hand.
He looked up at the sound of Thomasin’s voice and gave a weary smile. “You should not have followed me,” Henry said, trying to sound stern; he just sounded tired. He caught sight of his ring hanging from the chain around Thomasin’s neck. He held it in his hand, still hanging from her neck, and smiled slightly.
“You followed me when I ran off in the woods,” she said. “I’m only returning the favor.”
“Or exacting your revenge,” Henry teased.
Thomasin shrugged her narrow shoulders and repeated Henry’s earlier words back to him. “It’s a matter of perspective.”
“This looks very fine on you,” Henry said of the ring.
“Will you have a pendant made for me like your brothers’ wives and your mother?”
“Patience,” he said teasingly. In fact, he had commissioned a jeweler shortly after arriving in London, though the piece’s production was delayed because Henry didn’t have his ring to show the jeweler. Instead, he had to provide the man with his shield so he could study the symbols painted on it. It wouldn’t be very pretty, he thought, but as long as it was recognizable it didn’t matter.
He knew better than to seek to borrow Charlie’s ring when he arrived. He would lend it to Henry if he asked him to, but he’d certainly put up a fuss about it.
And then he remembered the Saxon awaiting his death three floors below them.
Henry’s smile faltered.
“What’s wrong?” Thomasin murmured.
Seeing Cerdic, simply knowing that he was alive and nearby, upset Henry. As far as he could tell, the man was a boar, and it would be no great loss to the world for him to die. But it still bothered him.
Cerdic didn’t know about Henry’s relationship with Thomasin, her betrothal to Lawrence, or even that she was at court. He had no fondness for Thomasin, it seemed, and he would certainly not treat her with respect if they were wed, but he was still a living reminder of the life the Normans stole from her. That Henry stole from her. He sometimes felt that Thomasin was as much a prisoner as her former intended.
She cared for Henry, of course, but he wondered how much of her affection was true – true, in that it would still be there if she were free of Norman rule – if she had the option to return home to her father and go on living as she did before.
More than that, he worried how Thomasin would feel if she knew Cerdic was here. He swore Roger and Charlie to secrecy, of course. Lawrence didn’t know of his intended’s former relationship with the red-bearded prisoner – if he did, he would surely use that information to inflict pain.
“The Saxons . . .” Henry shook his head. “I’m so tired of all this fighting.”
Thomasin took a deep breath knowing she was about to start a fight. “Then why do you insist on fighting Lawrence?”
Henry’s nostrils flared in anger; he let the ring fall back into place. “Don’t start.”
“I’m not trying to start anything,” she said apologetically. She stepped closer as he started pacing in a circle, one hand on his hip as he rubbed his brow with the other. His hair, still short by Saxon standards, was a small pile of tumbling curls stacked atop his head. But he still looked so handsome. “I just . . . I’m just . . .”
“Just what?”
“I’m frightened! All right?!” How dare he make her say it out loud?
Henry stopped pacing. He tried to soften his features, but he was still stiff with nervousness. “It will be all right, Tom. Nothing will happen to you.”
“I don’t care about me!” she hissed. “I want to protect you just as much as you wish to protect me. Why won’t you let me?”
Henry was lost. “How?”
Kal let loose a warning bark that nearly made Thomasin jump. She hadn’t even realized he was in the hall with them. “Go,” she said to Henry. “I need a moment to compose myself.”
Henry slipped past her just as Lawrence came into view, carrying a goblet of wine in one hand and holding the other behind his back. Henry tensed his muscles so hard he nearly shook. Thomasin nodded silently to assure him that she was all right. Henry stomped back into the hall as Lawrence took a long drink from his goblet of wine.
“Would you like some?” he asked Thomasin.
“No, thank you.”
“Very well.” He tapped his fingernail against the rim of the glass. “You remember the nobleman’s family that I put to death?” he asked, lifting the cup to his lips again.
What sort of a question was that? “Yes.”
“Do you think they would’ve been better off alive, surrounded by lustful soldiers?” Lawrence asked calmly. “Do you think the baroness would be pleased to see her young daughters beaten and defiled in the same home where she was once mistress? It was a mercy killing in some ways.”
Thomasin was silent. She’d considered such questions for months after the Normans landed up until the night Henry lifted her out of her hiding place. She always concluded that she would rather be dead than passed around like a brood mare.
“You’d never have been so lucky. That would’ve been your fate if the king weren’t so set on bringing your brother to heel, which he clearly cannot, and if anyone but the Cavills had come for you, you would’ve been tied and beaten into submission and raped nightly, not carried about like a babe with your virtue intact.”
“I know that,” Thomasin snapped. What was his point? “Are you truly surprised that I might wish to marry someone who would treat me well? Someone I know would never raise a hand to me?”
“I won’t deny that I struck my wife on more than one occasion,” Lawrence said. “She came to me when she was fifteen years old. Still a child in need of discipline. You’re more intelligent, more mature, and I think you will know better than she did. I was not the source of all her troubles, as much as you might like to think so.”
“Why are you telling me this?”
“Because I dislike the way that you fawn over Henry and regard me as the most heinous of villains. You should be grateful for your good fortune. You’re betrothed to a man capable of mercy toward women.”
Beating his wife was mercy? He likely just meant that he wouldn’t take her against her will, and that was a great mercy indeed for women. Beating wasn’t so heinous, Thomasin supposed, but that didn’t mean she was all right with it.
“What do you care what I think?”
“I don’t. I care about whether or not my peers perceive me as weak, though, and I won’t have a wife who runs after another man anytime he frowns.” His voice remained even but his whole face had gone bright red with anger. “We’re to be wed next week. Once you are mine, I won’t tolerate such behavior. A wife obeys her husband in all things; you will not embarrass me by fawning over a weakling. Should you continue to do so, I won’t hesitate to show you my displeasure. Am I clear?”
The calm with which he spoke was unsettling. God’s truth, Thomasin would have felt better if he shouted.
Thomasin dipped her head. “I understand, my lord.”
Lawrence’s face returned to its normal color and a smile bloomed across his face. “Good.” He gave Thomasin a peck on the cheek. “Sleep well, my beloved.”
She didn’t notice Elaine and her daughter standing nearby until Elaine called out to her. “Thomasin?” She scurried over to her friend. “Are you all right?” Thomasin swallowed back the lump in her throat and nodded. “Here. Come with me.” She released her grip on Mercia to pull Thomasin around a corner for greater privacy, squeezing her hands reassuringly. “What’s happened?”
Thomasin didn’t realize all the color was gone from her face or that she was quaking like a leaf. “I’m fine.”
“Mamma?” Mercia said.
“A moment, my love,” her mother told her. “She was falling asleep at the table; I was leaving to put her to bed,” she explained to Thomasin. “I didn’t mean to listen in on your conversation.”
“I don’t care about that,” Thomasin said, shaking her head.
“I didn’t hear anything clearly,” Elaine said over her. “I only saw that he was talking to you and the look on your face.”
Mercia wasn’t paying attention to what the women were saying, she only saw the sadness in Thomasin’s eyes. “Why you crying?” she asked, eyebrows knit together. Thomasin noticed for the first time how cherubic the child appeared.
“I’m not crying.” Thomasin honestly didn’t think she was. And she wasn’t really, in that there were no tears, but she certainly looked distressed.
The child wouldn’t accept the non-explanation. “Mamma, why she crying?”
Elaine released her friend’s hands and crouched to look her daughter in the eye. “Go back inside, please. Lady Thomasin and I are speaking. I’ll take you to bed just as soon as we’ve finished.”
“But she sad!” Mercia objected. She looked around. “Where Bear? Bear make you happy. I go find!” She was still upset with Kal for assaulting Batty, but she trusted in his ability to bring joy to others.
“No, no, that’s all right,” Thomasin said with a sniffle. “I don’t want to bother him.” The last thing she needed was for Henry to be involved.
Mercia frowned for a moment before thrusting her doll up toward Thomasin’s face. “Take,” she commanded. “Batty make you feel better.”
Thomasin swallowed again and reached out numb fingers. She couldn’t remember the last time she held a doll. “Thank you.”
“Not for always,” Mercia said, holding up a finger. “You keep just until you feel better.”
“I understand. Thank you.”
Elaine and Mercia walked Thomasin back to her room. Elaine gave Etheldreda some instructions. “Mercia, can Lady Thomasin borrow some of Batty’s magic?”
“Just a little bit,” Mercia agreed.
Elaine smiled in thanks. She tore the doll open just enough to pull out some of the dried lavender, which she instructed Etheldreda to put in hot water for Thomasin to drink. “It will keep you from getting upset. I’ll send along some more herbs to help you rest. And more of Batty’s magic,” she assured her daughter. She turned back to Thomasin. “It won’t seem so bad in the morning. A good night’s sleep always helps.”
“I don’t think I can shut my eyes,” Thomasin said.
Elaine smirked. “Sleeping drafts are my specialty.” She didn’t mention that the drafts were the only thing that kept her from going mad when the Normans arrived. Without them, she’d spend all night staring up at the ceiling, clutching her daughter to her chest, praying for mercy from God and the invaders both.
She slipped away to put Mercia to sleep while Etheldreda prepared Thomasin for bed she sent a servant back with a pack of herbs for Etheldreda to make a sleeping draft and a handful of lavender to replace Batty’s stuffing.
Thomasin watched the fire flicker until the draft was ready. Etheldreda watched her drink, ensuring she drained every drop. Thomasin wiped her mouth with the back of her wrist.
“Lie down,” said Etheldreda.
Thomasin shuffled down in the bed as her maid drew the covers over her. “Etheldreda, have you ever been married?”
She nodded. “Twice.”
“Did you love your husbands?”
“Oh, yes.”
“Did they ever beat you?”
The old woman frowned. “Peasant women can be lucky on occasion. Sometimes we get to choose our husbands.” She tucked Batty under the covers beside Thomasin. “Shut your eyes and rest.”
“I don’t feel tired,” Thomasin said skeptically. She was asleep moments later.
**
Thomasin woke around noon the following day. She was still in a daze, so she decided to keep to her rooms for the day. She’d go visit Henry once she was feeling better.
Etheldreda drew her a steaming bath to ease her into the waking world. She washed and brushed her mistress’s hair, as there was too much of it for Thomasin to manage on her own. She told little stories about her daughters and granddaughters. She had sons, too, Thomasin thought, but she didn’t talk about them. Thomasin guessed they were killed in the war.
A servant dropped off some bread and cheese so Etheldreda and Thomasin did not need to leave the room for their nooning meal. Thomasin did feel better, she thought as Etheldreda laced the back of her simple gown.
The servant had only just finished when someone pounded on the door so hard that it shook. “Thomasin!” It was Charlie’s voice.
She pulled the door open, knowing immediately that something bad had happened. “What is it?”
Charlie’s shoulders heaved as he breathed heavily; he’d clearly run from wherever he had been to Thomasin’s room. “Henry’s challenging Lawrence.”
“Today?”
“Now!” Charlie said. “If you want to help him, we must go.”
Thomasin didn’t even stop to put on her slippers. She ran alongside Charlie, damp hair loose and whipping around her. The people they passed looked at her like she’d gone mad. Maybe they thought she was drunk for presenting herself in public like that. Or a strumpet.
They finally reached the throne room.
Charlie shoved the doors open and Thomasin rushed inside. Henry had removed his glove and prepared to throw it down; Thomasin surged forward and managed to grab it out of his hand before he could and careened toward the dais and the king.
She fell so heavily on her knees that she scraped the skin. She’d have awful bruises tomorrow. It didn’t matter.  She stared up at the king with enormous eyes. “Your grace, they can’t fight,” she gasped. “Please don’t let them fight.”
“Thomasin,” Henry snarled.
“There’s no need for them to fight,” Thomasin said over him. She refused to turn and look at him.
William raised an eyebrow. “No need? Does this mean you’ll marry Lawrence willingly?”
“Absolutely not.” Her tone was far too harsh but she prayed William would excuse her given the circumstances. “But – I cannot be his wife. Not truly.”
William asked, “Why?”
Oh, God help her. This stupid, stupid girl. Charlie’s plan might not work but she at least had to try.
“Because. Because I’m not – I’m – I’m not a virgin!”

Since the finale aired, I’ve been yammering on about how it would’ve only worked as a finale to s2, and now that I’m actually rewatching s2, I stand by that even more staunchly. The finale doesn’t work in a post-s2 supernatural universe.
This is the version of Dean we saw in the finale-- the one whose only mission in life was to Save Sammy, to help him get his revenge and allow him to go out and live a Normal Safe Life pretending that hunting and monsters don’t exist. The one who just wanted some pie, to drive his car, and had no real connections beyond Sam in the world outside of Bobby. Even Dean’s characterization in the finale is this far younger Dean who’d never allowed himself to crack open and truly understand love. It would take me years to plow through everything I’ve ever written about him as a character and his long struggle to emotional maturity we saw evolve over the next 13 years beyond this episode, but the tl;dr will always be “this s2 Dean is the same as the Dean in the finale.”
The goal of s2 was saving SAM from his “destiny,” too. In this era of the show, Dean didn’t have a “destiny” the same way Sam did. The ONLY thing that mattered was freeing Sam from “becoming evil,” and being manipulated into terrible things. What Dean wanted, what he was “destined” for by the narrative was irrelevant, because all of his choices and emotional burdens were tied only to saving Sam. To freeing Sam so he could safely return to his “normal life.” Go back to college, have a family and the white picket fence life.
This was before Dean truly began fighting for HIMSELF. Which only really and truly began after he sells his soul to resurrect Sam. That’s when Dean truly begins fighting for himself. Sure, he’s angry with John during s2 for trading his own life for Dean’s, for putting the burden of “if you can’t save Sam, you’ll have to kill him” on his shoulders with his dying breath, but Dean is still fighting against John’s authority and the complicated tangle of feelings of his own childhood and not actually coming to terms with his own wants and needs and wishes out beyond that yet. He’s still unwittingly confronting the “destiny” John had set up for him, and hasn’t moved beyond that yet. It’s only trading his soul for Sam’s that finally brings Dean into the cosmic narrative that will fuel his introspection and personal growth for the rest of the series.
And out beyond that point, his entire character arc explodes into orbit.
Dean’s entire character arc in s3 is confronting this very basic fact: he doesn’t deserve to have been sacrificed just to save Sam. He doesn’t deserve that burden, and he does deserve to live. This is the realization he comes to before eventually being dragged to Hell and then rescued by an angel, who literally tells him, “you don’t think you deserve to be saved” in the aftermath of that. From that point on, we have TWELVE SEASONS of Dean struggling with what he “deserves” versus what is “fate” and “destiny” and eventually confronting what he WANTS if he truly could choose his own destiny.
Plus, out beyond that point, he has Cas. And nothing changes Dean, pushes him to grow and understand himself, and accept himself-- all of himself, from the good to the horrific-- than the pure and unflinching acceptance of Castiel. Cas never looked at him and said “you are evil,” or “you are worthless.” (well, they’ve both said some pretty awful stuff to each other over the years, but there was either brainwashing or other deeper issues pushing those things on them, and they have ALWAYS eventually come back to one another, and the awful stuff was dealt with). Point is, Dean and Cas both began running these parallel arcs of duty versus desire, and for Dean, the duty was always framed around “taking care of Sam” versus pursuing any sort of ambition or goals for himself. They would fight for this for most of the rest of the series, until eventually the goal for ALL of them would be about discovering what they would want for themselves.
The show explicitly dealt with this, repeatedly, over later seasons, asking all of the characters the big questions: is this what you would choose for yourself? What WOULD you choose for yourself if you could?
And then they made the narrative of the final season, of the final Big Bad, the fact that they had NEVER had real freedom, and that their entire lives (and the entire history of not only this universe but every parallel universe) had been Chuck’s Puppet Theater, and true free will had been a lie all this time. Pushing all of the characters to confront their own choices and understand what about who they were as people was separate from what Chuck pushed them into choosing and doing all these years. The main thing that Dean (and also Cas, and to the extent she was included in the narrative this was Eileen’s issue as well) were being pushed to come to terms with what really was real, and were their feelings and choices their own or imposed on them for the furtherance of Chuck’s story.
At the end of the road, finally free and out from under Chuck’s control, they knew what was real. For Sam and Eileen, they had chosen each other. Cas had chosen Dean, but Dean hadn’t yet had a chance to reply, but anyone with two eyes and a brain knows what he would’ve said in return. It’s what Cas stopped him from saying even back in Purgatory in 15.09. And yet, for some reason Sam and Dean forgot all of that, as if none of it had ever even really happened at all, and we went right back to who they were right after they finally defeated the YED, before we even knew Azazel had a name, let alone the fact that the ultimate boogeyman of their entire lives to that point had been nothing more than a fanatic pawn in a much larger destiny for both of them.
The end of s2 was the last time Dean sacrificing himself so Sam could have a normal life, where Dean really felt there was nothing more for himself than fulfilling his father’s orders to save Sammy, even feels remotely plausible. It’s the last time we can feel like Dean might find peace and contentment in a Heaven where John is nearby to be proud of him, and where Dean would actually feel like that validation was even relevant to his own life.
And that finally brings me back to s2, where that was actually addressed through John’s self-sacrifice to save Dean, to serve Dean up to the narrative and provide a stage for this self-transformative journey INTO being a version of John himself. Only... Dean DOESN’T choose that. He fights to save Sam at all costs, even when it seems clear that the right answer would probably be to KILL Sam instead. When not only the ghost of John Winchester plaguing Dean’s mind would make him doubt his own drive to save his brother, but the John Winchester Insert Character of s2-- Gordon Walker-- basically put Dean’s own doubts out there in plain words in 2.10:
GORDON: I'm surprised at you, Dean. Getting all emotional. I'd heard you were more of a professional than this. Look, let's say you were cruising around in that car of yours and, uh, you had little Hitler riding shotgun, right? Back when he was just some goofy, crappy artist. But you knew what he was going to turn into someday. You'd take him out, no questions, am I right?
DEAN: That's not Sam.
GORDON: Yes it is. You just can't see it yet. Dean, it's his destiny. Look, I'm sympathetic. He's your brother, you love the guy. This has got to hurt like hell for you. But here's the thing. It would wreck him. But your dad? If it really came right down to it, he would have had the stones to do the right thing here. But you're telling me you're not the man he is?
This, the episode where Dean finally confesses John’s final orders to Sam, where Dean has decided that saving Sam is all that matters, even when circumstance and everyone else is practically screaming at him that this could all be over if only he gave in-- be it his own self-sacrifice OR killing Sam. Six of one, half a dozen of the other, the universe doesn’t care (and neither does Chuck... especially at this point... and the proof of that is Sam’s s15 nightmares where one of Chuck’s alternate universe endings for Sam and Dean was Sam actually going Darkside on demon blood and killing Dean... any iteration of the old drama, Chuck has explored all potential endings-- oh, except the ending where TFW gets to just be happy and live... that’s the one ending they never get and the only one they deserved in the end).
also from 2.10... loads of chat about “destiny” and one of Dean’s first “we should just lay all this shit down and take a vacation” moments when he suggests they go to Amsterdam and enjoy some of the not-coffee-coffee-shops, which Sam counters by doubling down on the fact that Dean has a destiny in all this as much as Sam does:
SAM: Well, come on, dude, you're a hunter. I mean, it's what you were meant to do.
DEAN: Ah, I wasn't meant to do anything, I don't believe in that destiny crap.
SAM: You mean you don't believe in my destiny.
DEAN: Yeah, whatever.
SAM: Look, Dean, I've tried running before. I mean, I ran all the way to California and look what happened. You can't run from this. And you can't protect me.
DEAN: I can try.
And that’s it, right there. This is the “neither of you can try for a normal life outside of the other while the other is still alive.” This is Sam pinning a destiny to Dean that’s just as inescapable within Chuck’s narrative as Sam’s demon blood and psychic powers.
This is the core essence of Chuck’s story about them. The sibling dynamic that Chuck failed to free himself from, and that Sam and Dean failed to free themselves from after Chuck’s demise in 15.19.
Destiny. One must die so the other can live.
And considering the next 13 seasons of the show and the long and emotionally grueling character arcs Sam and Dean proceed through where they truly confront the core of who they are as people-- as individuals outside of their duty and destiny-- the finale ceases to make any sense outside of Chuck’s narrative for them. If 15.20 really happened exactly as we saw it on screen, then Chuck still won.
And they had to loop Sam and Dean all the way back to where they were emotionally at the end of s2 in order to make it seem plausible. Which, for those of us who actually care about what they endured after s2, makes the finale entirely implausible as a whole.

What do you think if the Phantom Thieves (except Futaba) all had Shadows they had to confront and fight (like in p4), and what would they be?
OK this one is super interesting and it’s taken me MONTHS to get to, so let’s gooooooooo (will include p5r spoilers!)
i think all of their contracts sort of give us an idea of what their shadow selves may be (meaning goro is more up in the air), and i like to go with the idea that in p5, their shadows are how society has forced them to act. they have incorporated that into the self and conformed to it, but they don’t wish to acknowledge that they do so, instead making themselves believe they have no choice. futaba’s shadow, as the example, wishes for her own death as she was a burden and a curse to her mother...but she also made futaba aware this was a lie concocted by adults that took away her agency and her anger. SO with that in mind, here are the takes!!
akira - the bystander, the boy told to keep out of the way and to keep his head down. he’s determined to live a quiet and peaceful life, to get through his probation and swear to turn the other way when evil happens in front of him. akira is ashamed of the impulse because he knows what’s right, he knows he needs to help, but his shadow is all about self-preservation and avoiding further punishment. so he protects himself and only himself by feigning ignorance and closing his eyes, his ears, and his mouth. his shadow says “i already got mine, they’re on their own”
ryuji - the traitor, the boy who ruined the dreams of the track team and wears it with pride. he destroyed their hopes of the future and now has become a delinquent, free of the responsibilities he once had to himself, to his mom, and to his school. he can be rude, crass, and vulgar (lol) to his heart’s content because no one expects any more of him after enacting such violence. his anger runs deep and he doesn’t care about how he hurt his old team, they deserved it for never standing up for themselves.
ann - the sweetheart, the girl always there with a kind but seemingly empty word for her friend, supportive but distant. however, she instead tries to work within the confines of the world, trying to save the ones she cares about by using her looks and the reputation everyone puts on her because of them, pretending to be a flirtatious airhead to please those that may hurt the only person she cares for. she hurts herself over and over again, breaks down her own sense of self worth to sacrifice endlessly in ways others never see. she takes the pain forever with a smile.
yusuke - the student, the boy who knows the lies his teacher tells to him, but he is forever devoted to preserving the image his superior has both to the world and to himself. he believes his debt extends to worship, faith in the teacher who is a genius, who knows best, who is so much older and so much wiser and so must be doing right. in fact, he should be so lucky to have his work considered good enough to carry his teacher’s name instead of his own, he should happily produce for him because his teacher’s reputation has no price too high. surely he at least must return the cost of caring for him when no one would.
makoto - the role model, the girl who is quick-witted and resourceful, she can juggle every task the incompetent, lazy, or uncaring adults entrust to her. after all, their responsibilities are so much greater than even hers, just a silly high school student with all the time in the world to perform their lowlier tasks for them. she accepts every ask with grace and tact, she turns down no request and will work herself past the point of burn out for praise, for recognition, for the promise of her future. this is just the way the world is, she must get used to it now if she wants to survive.
haru - the princess, the girl who’s always charming and polite, perfectly prim and never a bore but her words are always shallow. she seems to only exist at gatherings and galas, always smiling, introduced by a beaming father and complimented on how beautiful she is, how she will make a most wonderful wife now that she’s blossoming into a young woman. she worships her fiance, she has captivated his whole family and, most importantly, his father with how delicate and vapid she is. a wonderful spouse up for trade, the loveliest business venture her father ever pursued.
goro - the orphan, the boy who is helpless and was left abandoned by his family and by society. he has no will of his own that he can inflict on the world, instead he is battered by fate and by an actively cruel reality, a curse, unwanted and unneeded by anyone. he elicits disgust in whoever he meets, yet he yearns deeply to be loved and to be accepted, he begs for it and everyone he meets that will give him any time of day are his “friends”. he believes there is no such thing as unconditional love and no matter what he tries, his struggle will be rendered futile.
sumire - the doppelganger, the girl that believes she is only a shadow of a sister far more talented and determined than she could ever be. she only had worth defined by another, one she followed around like a weight, dragging her down with her incompetence. a burden for her sister, pitied awkwardly by parents, an inconvenience that grew increasingly irrelevant and irritating with every passing day until she botched her own death. now she is a shadow without a body, the wrong girl taken in her attempt on her own life, the ultimate blunder ever committed by another human being. she pantomimes her sister more and more poorly, although she’s tricked herself into believing she really is her in her house of ashes.
morgana - the monster, the boy that can’t face who he really is for he fears what he will see in the mirror. he lives happily in ignorance, never wanting to remember his origins or his duties and he indulges in his freedom without worry of where he comes from. after all, if he has no idea of his past, he can imagine himself as anything he wants - a dashing rogue, a swashbuckling hero, a gallant thief, he is whatever he makes himself to be without the burden of his history. he never turns around too quickly, never wanting to catch a look at himself because every now and then he sees jail cells, black ooze, darkness. but that’s not him.

YOUR CHARACTER IN FIVE QUOTES!
( repost, do not reblog. ) Tell us your favorite quotes from your character. Give us an idea of who they are by five things they’ve said.
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
Tumblr media
Alright, buckle up, I’m stealing this meme and repurposing it for my own use. Probably more than five, and including some quotes from others about him, though I’m going to try to keep it in groupings, and also not meant to be exhaustive of qrow’s character, but rather, to point out some very poignant lines that have effected my portrayal and... some possibly in an unpopular way compared to what I’ve seen in the fandom? I think Qrow Branwen is more complex than fitting the broody broken boi trope would give credit for (though he at least fits it as an overall stereotype).
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
1) I’m absolutely sure Qrow had a rough start and transition from the tribe to ‘civilized society’, coupled with typical teenage hormones and mood swings, but generally, Beacon was a good time, and he sees himself as a good huntsman, and (though we may joke about it sometimes) he absolutely does not have an active nor passive death wish.
Yeah, yeah, I know he has a song all about how he self depreciates and carries shame, but that’s a theme of his attitude, not backed up to be every single aspect of his life by actual canon. Quite the contrary.
I don’t know where fndm gets the idea that he constantly lost his battles (especially to Raven) or was perpetually looked down on or stayed an angsty, broody teenager (who could never possibly have ever even breathed a single happy breath on his own without Summer??) all four years. As if school was hell and he never came into his own until STRQ was a graduated unit or something? If ever?
Leo tells Raven she and her brother are evenly matched. Raven herself - who takes pride in being stronger and more clever than others - describes them as a pair: “we were good.”
“you're talking to a member of the coolest team that graduated Beacon! ...we were pretty well known back in the day. ...hey, we looked good! and I have a number of inappropriate stories to back that up!”
“let me tell ya, these kids are way better than we were at their age. ...well, not better than me, specifically...”
“a professional huntsman like myself is expected to get results as soon as possible.”
The way Qrow talks about his past, as well as carrying a memento of team STRQ around with him, it’s very nostalgic for better times. The way he talks about his work, if not himself, can actually be to the point of being self-aggrandizing, instead of depreciating. He’s even able to admit that his dreaded semblance, Misfortune, “comes in handy in a fight.”
“lots of us thought you were just layin' low. eventually, we just came to accept that you were probably dead. but the stories about you, i based my weapon off of yours. i wanted to be as good as the Grimm Reaper.”
Qrow talks about himself as striving to be better. It seems he never really sees himself as reaching that standard, but it certainly implies he knows he’s not at the bottom - he had an ideal he wanted to reach and likely worked towards. Notice the use of “us” and “we” as well - he talks about himself as part of a group of larger huntsfolk circles. Who knows if this refers to students or licensed professionals or both, but this heavily, heavily implies that he was more than just a sad, outside loner, at least for a time; he chatted with others and traded stories about goings-on and missions and idols.
Somewhat related and leading into...
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
2)  At least around this blog, Qrow does not have an inferiority complex because of Raven.
Does he have some internalized shame about being soft that he can’t quite shake? A few insecurities about being unwanted compared to her natural leadership and competence? Yes. Does he consciously view himself as lesser than her? No.
Also... he’s not co-dependent on her. To a degree, for while? Yeah, there was probably an unhealthy reliance going on there. But Qrow and Raven establish themselves with their own identities at some point, they’d have to, to chose different paths so stubbornly. There’s a rift there, eventually, if not always having been at odds in some ways and comfort in others.
“Raven's got an interesting way of looking at the world that I don't particularly agree with. [The weak die, the strong live. Those are the rules.]”
“...they were killers and thieves.”
We are shown that the twins were raised with this weak/strong dichotomy. Raven bought into it, but Qrow explicitly separates himself from that belief. Shown again when he mocks Raven with, “because that was your rule, right?”
He believes in true family, he believes in protecting the weak, he believes in doing good, he believes in standing up for what’s right. He may not like being emotionally vulnerable, but he shows softness and kindness to others, and for as much as he likes his flourish when fighting, he also isn’t afraid to look an absolute fool either.
He is shown de-escalating conflict time and again, even if he also falls back into violent, defensive patterns at times, too. He resents Raven for the choices she made, and as far as I interpret, thinks she’s the lesser one for running away and abandoning her family and her mission. (Meanwhile, she thinks the same of him for turning his back on the tribe.)
He all but spits on the tribe’s way of life, is willing to attack them outright to get the Spring Maiden. Why would he judge himself by those standards any longer? No, he lives by his own code, a huntsman’s code, and even has some pride in that. It’s why he can call Clover out on it. It’s why he folds when Robyn holds him to it.
It’s why it hurts when he finds out what gave him more meaning, aligned more with his own heart, than the tribe’s dogma may not actually have any purpose at all...
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
3) There’s so much to unpack here:
“No one wanted me... I was cursed... I gave my life to you because you gave me a place in this world... I thought I was finally doing some good... Meeting you... was the worst luck of my life...”
No one wanted him? I believe this means the tribe, maybe even Raven, maybe trying to make friends, but no one until Oz? Does this include STRQ? I have trouble reconciling that one with everything else we’re shown. I still maintain he was part of bigger circles, but we get confirmation that these were probably fleeting or superficial. He knew people and was known, but no one stuck around.  Also more confirmation of his values. Gave me a place sounds like so much more than refocusing to me. It’s not gave me a direction, not told me what to do, it’s took who i am and gave that person a place to thrive - despite the bad that comes with - to work towards something better. Just like he always wanted.
But then he backtracks. What is it he regrets?  We do know how he likes to go into dramatic hyperbole about these things when he’s upset. [eg. “we’re not family anymore.” “i shouldn’t have come. i shouldn’t have let any of you come.” “we can kill the man who put us here.” “gone. like everybody else.”] (I love that crwby lets their characters do it. we all say things we don’t mean in the moment, give voice to those intrusive thoughts.)
I’ve talked before about how I picture him having flashes of all the lives he could have had instead. Would he have gone back with Raven and at least still had her? Would he just have been a normal huntsman defending people from Grimm without the crushing extra knowledge? Might he have been able to have a relationship or family of his own had he not signed up for the vagabond spy life? Does he just resent losing Summer and Raven because of how things went down? We don’t know, and I think the point is that he probably doesn’t either, but the weight of sacrificing all those alternatives and putting so much faith in Ozpin, stacking so much of his life’s work and identity on being part of the inner circle, comes crashing down on him all at once.
also quite fitting...
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
4) "Nice place to raise a family. ...If you're ...into that sort of thing."
This is from his World of Remnant narration, talking about Patch, but it hits so damn hard. The softness and warmth in the first half of the statement, followed by the harsh need to qualify it in regards to his own outlook... We learn all we need to know about his opinion of the subject.
We see the conflict right there - the possibility of such a thing brings a wholesome lilt to his voice, yet he implies that it’s not something he personally intends to pursue. Is that because he doesn’t want it or because he thinks he can’t or shouldn’t have it? I don’t think that’s clear, and he may not know either.
At the very least, I fall into the camp of him believing he doesn’t want it. Combine that with the fact that he does pick up that spy life, which makes keeping his distance a necessity, and makes settling down near impossible, and then he definitely knows it’s not in the cards for him.
So I think it ultimately falls somewhere between. Why would he make the commitment to being a lone spy if he had dreams of love and a family? ...But then why would he resent making the sacrifice of that possibility later if he didn’t?
Having his nieces around probably softened him up to the idea, but he’d already made his decision by that point. He’s also solid and generally happy with his choices at the point it would most matter. He’s married to his job. He’s fulfilling his missions well, in well-suited ways for his strengths and flaws. He has his nieces around as a balm on any sort of biological clock. He has his purpose with Oz.  Until he doesn’t.
This is an incredibly long-winded way of restating that one of the headcanon hills I do stand to die on is: Gray-romantic Qrow.
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
5) “some people are just born unlucky... my semblance isn't like most - it's not exactly something i... do.”
I am constantly confused by the amount of people trying to do character analysis around Misfortune and Qrow based on standard semblance lore, when he has yet again stated explicitly to the contrary. We all have carte blanche ya’ll. We can do whatever we want with this, because he’s already told us his semblance breaks the rules.
My full headcanon for it is here and my opinion about the direction I hope it takes is here but tl;dr
Unless we learn otherwise, there are very, very few ways I believe Misfortune is a reflection of Qrow’s soul, if at all. This is from the first headcanon, but it’s worth restating, because it’s important to me, aaand fits the theme of pulling in some quotes from other characters:
Everyone likes to quote Ren and his description of someone’s personality being incorporated into a semblance. I don’t buy it for qrow. Here’s the FULL quote: “A common philosophy is that a warrior’s Semblance is a part of who they are. Some say your personality and character can define your Semblance while some claim that it is the other way around. Of course, there are still many who don’t see a connection at all.”
So unless we find out otherwise I will also die on the hill that qrow is an example of the middle part. Qrow’s personality/soul has nothing to do with why his semblance is what it is, but being forced to grow up and live with Misfortune has defined him tremendously.
OKAY, there are some smaller quick ones, but I’ll stick to my five points like I promised at least, and maybe do a lesser version some other time. :]

I Want to Write a Mikayuu Series
Tumblr media
Okay.
So um.
If you're reading this, HELLO. All of you long time ONS fans probably don't know me, but I'm Alison and I'm a hardcore Mikayuu, Mitsunoa, Gureshin, etc shipper. I've been in the ONS fandom for almost a year and dear god. The amount of people telling me that Mikayuu is queerbait is just making me really sad 😅 I'm a writer, and I'm the type of person who honestly feels like the author of a series should have the ability to choose how a story ends without influence of their readers. I mean, if it's their story, then it should be their ending, right? However, I also do have some qualms when it comes to how this "love triangle" between Yu, Mika, and Shinoa is being portrayed. This is entirely my personal opinion, but I feel like Shinoa seems to be forcing herself to love Yu. I honestly don't think she cares for him in a romantic way, but more of a very deep-rooted admiration or even envy that she's trying to convince herself to be romantic love. And Yu has said multiple times that he values Mika's life above his own, that he doesn't know what he would do without him if he were to die again (I mean the fact that he suffered seeing his best friend and potential lover die a first time was definitely scarring enough, PLEASE STOP TORTURING OUR POOR BABIES). And it's basically confirmed by now that when Mika said I love you in the manga, it was in the romantic sense. Even though I wish, I hope, I dream, and I pray that Mikayuu will become canon, I honestly can't say for certain what I think will happen. I think it could sway any way, with Mikayuu becoming canon, Yu and Shinoa becoming canon, or it being one of those ambiguous endings where it's heavily implied but nothing actually happens. And in order to make myself feel better when stuff like this happens, I tend to rewrite the entire story with the ending that I would have liked to see ;)
You're probably wondering where the hell this stranger is going with this. Well, I want to write a book. A series, actually.
One that's inspired by Seraph of the End.
Now, if you're interested in hearing me out, then feel free to keep reading. But if not, continue on with your scrolling, no hard feelings. But if you do, and I really hope that you do, give me a chance to explain.
I want to write a series inspired by Seraph of the End called Bloodsucker (working title, obviously). And this series is going to be a reimagination of ONS with an ending that I would have loved to see in the anime and manga. I plan to have three main characters (please keep in mind that I'm going to have name changes): Yuichiro, Mikaela, and a brand new character, Epic.
Tumblr media
Now, I would begin this series a bit before the anime and I'm assuming the manga begins. I'd start with introducing our main three characters as they meet in the orphanage (yes, Epic would be a part of this orphanage as well) and how Epic and Yu try to make moves to run away only to be stopped by Mika and Akane.
I plan to include a scene between Epic and Akane where Epic tries to run out in the middle of the night only to be stopped by Akane, and this is what caused Epic to develop a crush on her (Epic is a girl btw). Then I would begin the whole shit with the vampires and how they set the world on fire and shit, but instead of the apocolypse, I'd make it so that most of the adults died in the fire while the kids were taken alive (because young blood is better and whatnot). This includes our little Hyakuya family. The directors would have tried to trade the kids lives for their own, and due to their selfishness, the vamps killed them and took the kids anyway.
This would begin my first story arc: the prewar.
Tumblr media
Epic, Akane, Mika, and Yu would all be living under the vampires at this point along with the rest of the kids in their orphanage. I plan to include lots of moments of bonding that heavily imply Epic loves Akane even though she doesn't know it yet and Mika loves Yu, but Yu is fucking oblivious. The four begin to plot their escape, but while Mika and Akane (yes Akane too) are making deals with the vampires to help out with their family, Epic is constantly finding herself getting dragged along to visit Queen Krul. The pink haired vamp has a soft spot for her for some reason and often tells her that Epic and her family are "special" or sum shit. And she's super confused and semi grossed out. But none of the vamps ever dare to hurt her so she thinks it's fine. Then one day they all plot their escape and it's much more planned out and lengthy and less rushed than it is in the anime. Things almost seem to work out until the vampires stop them
And Mika and Akane DIE.
I know. I'm horrid.
Epic is standing here in shock as she watches the love of her life die before her and Mika BEGS for Yu to take Epic and run while they can. So while in the series only Yu survives, he obeys Mika and both him and Epic survive this. They're found by Guren (a new character I haven't come up with yet lol) and Yu is super protective over Epic, not wanting anyone to take the only piece of his family he has left (he's a fucking mess without Mika let's just be honest) and Guren ends up taking them under his wing.
Now we hit the second arc. Still with me?
The War.
Tumblr media
Hold onto your hats everyone because this is where shit is about to get complicated. So I do plan to have a bit of a time skip into the current spot where Yu and Epic are attending school with Guren as their father figure and they've become very close. So close that Yu refuses to work with anyone else but her. They end up getting onto Shinoa Squad (obviously going to be completely different in my version) and they get put onto the battlefield. But here's the catch. Well, two catches.
Yu and Epic do have demon weapons. I do plan to try to incorporate that into this. BUT the backstory is different. I plan to make it so that the vampires obviously see the humans as fies. Insignificant things that are more playthings than threats. And they didn't want to have to deal with killing all of them, so they sent demons in their place to handle it. But the humans were able to form deals or "contracts" with the demons and therefore turned the vampires' own secret weapon against them.
Now, catch no. 2
So, Epic, Mika, and Yu aren't seraphs in this. But they are something else. I'm going to try to explain this as simply as I can, but each of them (besides Mika since he doesn't have a demon) have 3 souls inside their body:
Soul 1 is their current soul, the one that identifies as Mika or Epic or Yu.
Soul 2 is their demon soul, like what Asuramaru is to Yu.
And soul 3 is their archangel soul (I might change that name later on).
So I'm just going to come right out and say it. In this series, Epic is the villain.
Yes.
You read that right.
Epic is the villain. But she doesn't know that she is. These Soul 3s were reincarnated into the current bodies of Mika, Epic, and Ari (and I know that's not exactly how it works but screw logic this is just a fucking concept) from their lives centuries ago.
These souls existed way before vampires existed and Epic (or Essie) was very close friends with Yu (or Aytigin). Aytigin was in love with Haru (Mika) but for one reason or another, they couldn't be together. Essie wanted to do something, willing to do anything to make the two of them happy. So she made a deal that brought the vampires into creation so that Haru and Aytigin could be happy. She was willing to sacrifice everything that they stood for so that the two of them could be in love together.
She had good intentions, but of course Haru and Aytigin were furious because now the vampires were turning against the humans and they all basically died. Until they were reborn respectively, but unknowingly.
Now picking back up in the present, Yu and Epic are fighting in one of the main battles and the two are very confused when the vampires make a very deliberate attempt not to hurt Epic. They're unsure as to why, but Guren tells them not to worry about it.
Suspicious bastard.
Anyway, it's revealed finally that MIKA IS ALIVE
BUT HE'S ALSO DEAD
Yes he is a vampire. And Yu falls in love all over again upon seeing him, and after a bunch of struggling, Epic gets kidnapped. At first she gets strangled by Lacus and then she gets kidnapped by Ferid who doesn't kill her surprisingly.
Oh and uh... Ferid is nice in this. He's still a fucking creep, but he's a lot nicer than he is in the series. I plan to make Queen Krul or whoever I turn her into be the villain.
Tumblr media
Anyway, they take Epic back to the vampire palace or whatever and Queen Krul and Epic are reunited! And Krul is the one who reveals to Epic exactly who she, Mika, and Yu are and this is what sparks Epic's fall to insanity.
I mean, she's the killer. She's the one who brought them into this world. She's responsible for every death the vampires cause.
I would go crazy too.
So, she manages to escape (partially thanks to Mika) and the two join Yu and the others again and it's revealed a second time exactly what is going on. And while no one actually blames Epic on the Shinoa Squad, that doesn't stop people like Kureto and even herself from blaming.
And this causes her demon to go haywire.
She begins losing her marbles, almost killing her teammates and trying to kill herself, all while the three begin to experience dreams or visions of their Soul 3s.
While all this shit is going on, there's heavy romance between Mika and Yu because these two lovers just got reunited and FUCK did they have glow ups but yes -
Oh. And there is another spark for Epic, even though she doesn't think she's worthy of love.
Okay. I'm just gonna say it.
Lacus falls in love with Epic. Yes. You read that correctly too.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I plan to make the two of them get trapped together at some point and they have to work together to escape. It's during this time that Epic realizes he's not all that bad and has some form of self control and he realizes that she's the most interesting thing he's ever met in this disgusting and boring life and damn do her eyes look pretty-
But yes. She forms a permanent alliance with him that he jokes about as marriage and they meet on other occassions too, but lol yes.
Anyway, blah blah blah, more fall to insanity, the Soul 3s take over their bodies on multiple occasions and there's a lot of bonding and fighting and Epic and Mika somehow manage to get some of the vampires on the human side.
And in the end, Epic and Yu basically sacifice themselves to save the human race and kill Queen Krul. It's a very rough ending I haven't quite perfected yet, but Yu has a moment like he did with the King of Salt. But though he inflicted a lot of damage, it's not enough. So while the team is worried about him, Epic takes this opportunity to fix her and Essie's mistakes.
She allows both Essie and her demon to take control of her body and dies on the battlefield. Queen Krul is eliminated. Most of the vampires are gone. The humans won.
Horray.
Epic is dead.
Kinda. Yu and Mika take her back home and this is the preview to the last arc where everyone's in the hospital and Epic's in a coma. Mika and Yu barely ever leave her side and it's only when Lacus of all people comes to visit that she fucking wakes up.
Okay. Are you still with me? Now come with me to the final arc.
The Post-War.
Tumblr media
No my friend. It doesn't end there. Because Mika and Lacus are still vamps and life still sucks and I drank too much coffee this morning.
No it's not over yet.
So flash forward a couple years and Kureto and Crew are working as the heads of this city. Stuff is being rebuilt, people are settling down in homes, Lacus and some of the other "good" vampires find jobs, and Mika, Yu, and Epic get a house together (in case I didn't mention before, Epic is pansexual. She loved Akane dearly and I plan to include scenes where she sees her in her mind and dreams like Mikayuu so she's never truly gone, but she falls for Lacus too when he's not being a sadistic asshole). Things are going strangely when
BAM. Epic and Yu come up with a cure for vampirism.
How, you may ask? I don't fucking know, I haven't read about it in the manga yet but before we come up with an idea for it, imma say they came up with it through a spell. They share their findings with Guren and soon all vampires are being cured, most notably Mika, Lacus, and even Rene.
BUT and there's always a but, Kureto passes a new law claiming all vampires to be property. That any vampire or previous vampire or even vampire supporter/owner that tries to disobey these new laws is to be killed immediately. Now Epic and Yu are in jeopardy because their ex-vampires are in danger (Epic and Lacus have been hanging out a lot more and he's proven himself to be a decent guy. Contrary to popular belief, I headcanon him as not really knowing what to do when he actually cares about someone since he's been a heartless vamp for so long. So when he turns to Mika and begrudgingly asks him for LOVE ADVICE of all fucking things, Mika is ready to die). So basically, Mika and Lacus end up getting locked up along with the other ex-vamps (including Ferid which was a pain in the ass) and did I forget to mention that there's a proposal?
Oh yeah, Yu proposes to Mika and the blond still has yet to give him an actual answer because poor baby is still having a hard time accepting that Yu can love a "monster" like him.
But anyways, now Epic and Yu are furious and SHINOA SQUAD IS BACK IN BUSINESS. With the help of Guren and Shinya and everyone, they form a sort of rebellion and blah blah blah they manage to get Mika and Lacus and everyone out and blah blah blah they all get separated and Lacus begins to get INSANELY protective of Epic and ends up confessing his feelings to her before he nearly dies and blah blah blah did I forget to mention that I'm making Mitsunnoa and Kimizuki x Yoichi canon and blah blah blah.
Epic kisses Lacus as an instinct. Lacus kisses her again. Mika accepts Yu's proposal then almost dies AGAIN. I kill off some characters for emotional tugs and after a ton of more fighting and revenge and psychological breakings later, Kureto is killed. And Guren (or someone else haven't decided yet) is the new head of their city.
Epic, Mika, and Yu finally let Akane and the kids go. There's a lot of Shinoa Squad bonding but this is a summary so I haven't included much besides the main three. Epic and Lacus becomes canon. Mika and Yu get married. Guren and Shinya get married. Shinoa gets pregnant.
And everyone gets the FUCKING HAPPY ENDING THAT THEY ALL FUCKING DESERVE BECAUSE FUCK
I do plan to be slightly ruthless like the creator and include a lot of heartbreaking scenes, but it's going to be much different than ONS but I still want it to hold on to some core relationships.
I just want them to be happy. And I just want to make other people happy because fuck I JUST WANT TO BE HAPPY
So. Yeah.
That's Bloodsucker...
So my question to you is... if I wrote this shit.
If I sat down and typed about 30 books roughly inspired by Seraph of the End and Mikayuu and Mitsunnoa and shit...
Would anyone read it?

"...the right kind of love, the kind that’s real... that sacrifices... that kind of love doesn’t blind you.  It actually helps you see.”  --Avatar: North & South
Personal Note--
You know, putting everything else aside-- and by everything, I mean every bit of color symbolism, every mythological parallel, every meaningful exchange of dialogue, every aesthetically and narratively beautiful reason that keeps us fans rooting for Zuko and Katara to fall in love in our own HeadCanon-- there still is no way for me to dismiss that a friendship between them was the best thing that could’ve ever happened to them.
I see them as characters in Season 1 and how their story arcs progress through the end of Season 3, and I see how one’s world could not fully be “complete” without understanding the other’s. I see the two of them, standing side-by-side as the Avatar’s greatest allies in a new era of peace... a position that could’ve worked *wonders* for these two as warriors, leaders, confidantes, and yes... perhaps eventually lovers.
When Zuko was helping Katara in the “Southern Raiders” episode, he didn’t know what his life would look like after Sozen’s Comet.  He didn’t know that his uncle would vouch for him to become the new Fire Lord and fight Azula to claim the throne; in my mind, Zuko must’ve been so detached from the Fire Nation by that point in the show that he’d swear never to return unless the Avatar himself requested it.  Katara also didn’t know what the future held for her after the Comet, but she was certain about her destiny to be with the Avatar. (This is not about romance, necessarily -- it’s about faith, loyalty, and dedication to bringing something back in the world that’s been long-forgotten, watching it take shape again through hope.)  Katara is essentially a miracle-worker and an advocate for change that would influence the world... including the Fire Nation.
Zuko would’ve been greatly inspired by Katara’s passion, and Katara would’ve been just as inspired by Zuko’s courage to trade his newfound freedom for a crown, trading his old life of duty and war for a new life of service and peace.
With this mutual respect and understanding -- and with all of their past animosity behind them -- there’s no doubt in my mind that Zuko and Katara would’ve become so much closer after Sozin’s Comet.  It doesn’t matter that Zuko ends up becoming FireLord and Katara remains at Aang’s side at the end of the show, because they would’ve come to terms with their greater purpose in life: helping the Avatar.  Their bond would remain, despite one always traveling to assist the Avatar and her homeland in the SWT, the other mostly staying within the Fire Nation to restructure government and mend international relations after a century of war.
I don’t want to dismiss Aang as a viable romantic candidate for Katara, because the show does demonstrate that he and Katara grow very close from all of their time together. Still, from how I see him through the end of the show, Aang’s maturity level is not at Katara’s, they never really had a heart-to-heart about their feelings beyond friendship, and while Aang seems to still depend on her at times of need... it’s never the other way around... nor is he willing to face Katara’s darkest moments.  Zuko understands Katara’s dark side and her anger, and he has the same level of maturity.  Their trust was developed so deeply and quickly that they were willing to go to battle together and risk their lives for the other.  For me, the sense of understanding that Zuko and Katara demonstrated as friends was more powerful than what Aang and Katara shared as a potential romantic couple... and looking it long-term, I would see Zuko and Katara getting closer, unless Aang does some major “growing up” with his Avatar duties and learns to be self-sufficient.
In my HeadCanon... despite the awkwardness that might occur with Aang always having a “thing” for Katara, I think he would realize that what Zuko and Katara have is incomparable, and he would eventually step aside and let destiny do its thing.  Zuko and Katara would grow up counseling each other in their roles... and I believe it’s through that friendship and that dedication to helping the Avatar that they would become each other’s partner though life.
It’s foolish to say that all of this wouldn’t be lovely potential for a romance.

Blood For Gold Chapter 22
Tumblr media
Woo, let the healing begin matters to be set right!
Thanks to @kriskukko for again, letting me borrow her regency era orc art and her regency era troll art too! Let’s bring Count Javyn Jabire back in shall we? And see what he thinks about all of these changes and let Sierge reflect on his own behavior and not let him get off the hook so easily.
@punkhorse96 you’re gonna love it!
Blood For Gold
Chapter 22
“So what kind of wedding did you have in mind?” You asked Demsey at dinner.
“Whatever kind of wedding you want, if you want to go full Dorierran, I will happily comply and pay for whatever you want. I want you to be happy and satisfied with everything. I know the Morrigans tried to make you as “English” as possible. So especially since your family is here and your friends are here and even more are coming in, you make it however you want it to be. I’ll happily submit and concede to anything you want, as long as we get married, the when and how and other details don’t really matter to me. Your marriage to Edward was all about him, This is your wedding, it should please you above all else. To hell with everyone else and their expectations, if they don’t like any particular thing, they don’t need to come.” Demsey reassured you.
“Really?” You asked as your tears glassed over your eyes.
“You mean that? You’re not just saying that to…” You began, almost afraid to believe him.
“No I absolutely mean it, this is your wedding and you’re marrying me for love, it should be exactly how you want to be.” He insisted.
“Thank you.” You thanked him before you announced to the table of what Demsey just told you and how you wanted it to be as Dorierran as possible before you changed your plans, how you were going to use the moura temple in London, instead of the church of the Voyambi’s choice as Demsey had no qualms about informing and insisting to his parents that because your marriage to Edward had been “his way” how it was only right that your wedding to him be all yours and that it should embrace you and your family and heritage and asking you to sacrifice anything was completely out of the question which his mother took as a surprise but the more she thought about it, the more “right” that became.
“Oh Zax and Axal, invite the Raymonds, Axal, I want you to enjoy my wedding with Ramsey, Octavia and Drina by your side. Yalin and Charlotte have always been genuine and I know that Zax will want Charlotte to be there too. I think since they were generous and hospitable with us, that we should be the same with them.” You told Axal and Zax who both teared up but their smiles were beaming.
“Thank you, I didn’t know how you felt so I wasn’t even going to ask.” Axal admitted.
“Me either.” Zax added.
“Well they’re kind of like family at this point and I want this to be a small, private, family and very close friends kind of affair, so of course they should be invited. But that also goes for you Demesy, you should invite your friends too.” You urged him.
“I will, I plan on having Javyn Jabire be my best man, he’s been my closest friend since we were boys.” Demesy smiled.
“Well in that case, will any of you be willing to help Demsey with his wedding suit? It needs to be gold because my wedding dress is gold because in the Hanging Garden Quarter which used to include the Sultanate Quarter and the Shiek and Shah Quarter, the bride and groom wear matching color schemes, I got some fabrics in from Dorierra that should help because I don’t know if the unstitched suit that was already made to go with it will be big enough for him.” You asked hopefully.
“Oh absolutely, after dinner, we can go back to your house to get it all and then we can spend all day tomorrow making him a suit, no worries.” Leumeni reassured you as the other male members of your family eagerly agreed to help as well which made you practically glow with gratitude.
“Thank you.” You thanked them gratefully.
After dinner though you made a stop at the moura Masai Temple and inquired about using it for your wedding as you were happy to see the same people who had been at the Kamoba battle as the band and orchestra also played music here at Masai Temple as they were all happy to see you marry the man who had the balls to kiss you in front of not just Royalty but all of gentry as you immediately made plans and orders for a “Sirerinna Wedding” later in the week for when they had the availability which would be in only five days which they assured you was more than enough time to put that kind of wedding together, because sometimes they usually only had a few hours notice but they were impressed that you had enough self control to wait a whole five days for it which made you and your family laugh.
They assured and reassured you that a lot could get done in a matter of days and that they would take it as a privilege that you, the Violet Viper would be married from Masai Temple as they asked you what colors you would like as you happily told them gold, turquoise and purple which for them made a lot of sense as Demsey happily paid them their asking price for it all and then some to make it ‘extra special’ which they happily accepted as Demsey, just by the looks of the entryway of the temple, he was in awe of it’s splendor and he didn’t need to see the rest of it to know that he was in for a treat to be married from here and after that, you took note of the moura dress shop- Corasura, that had a whole back room full of moura wedding attire that could either be bought or rented but because it was so late, it was decided that if the party needed anything, they would come in the next day to pick what they wanted or needed from there.
Then you brought everyone back to your house and went through all your trunks and got all the supplies you wanted and all the other items had been put with your wedding things for your future groom, whoever he might be as you noticed that there was already so much in these trunks that your family had put in here when you had left home two years prior, they were basically a wedding in a box, or in this case, three boxes or trunks in total, one of items for the groom, one for the bride and the last for the couple and the ceremony. Even the powder for all the white and gold henna was in there, only needing a special water and oil mix to mix it up and set it up to paint you head to toe with it along with other members of your family along with a copy of a henna design book, the most illustrious and amazing copy of the book available.
But Demsey of course refused to actually see your wedding dress because he wanted to at least honor that tradition and not tempt fate and superstition by seeing the bride’s dress before the wedding itself and wanted to wait until he saw you in it walking down the aisle. Which you couldn’t blame him for, even though he was informed that you weren’t going to be walking, you were going to be dancing down the aisle, your whole bridal party would be because that was traditional for a Sirerinna Wedding.
But Leumeni, Coravien, Storren, Brima, Zax, Axal and Rian as well as your hier father’s sons all took notes about the shade of gold and the more intricate details of the dress so that when they helped make Demsey’s wedding suit as well as their own since you had dozens of bolts of yards and yards and yards of fabrics of all kinds, enough to make all the men in your family as well as Demsey’s proper Dorierran wedding suits. Your brothers wanted to make especially sure they would have the same details on Demsey’s clothes as well as their own so that he would match you in an exquisite manner as they took all they could and asked you about what traditions you wanted to keep as you repeated that you wanted the quintessential “Sirerinna Wedding” which in marinai and in Dorierran culture meant ‘true love match wedding’.
The Sirerinna Wedding was reserved for when a bride would settle down for good and it would hopefully be the last wedding of her life and it wasn’t just because you were already pregnant, but that you felt it in your bones that this is what it should be and you were so happy and relieved and thrilled that Demsey was ok with all of this and was essentially, just along for the ride of it all and was embracing all of you, including your family, your home and your traditional culture before all the men in your family and friends departed so they could get to work tonight at the Voyambi’s house which the whole Voyambi family were more than happy to have them although they did insist that all of the gentlemen uphold the rules of decorum and decency which they were all happy to agree to.
The next day the Bellafonts, the Raymonds and the Voyambis met your family back at the moura dress shop, Corasura as all the Bellafont, Voyambi and Raymond women along with Jane, were fitted with traditional Dorierran Hanging Garden wedding celebration dresses as they marveled at them and happily traded them for the bolts of fabrics from Dorierra and charged only a small fee for the actual seamstresses to sew them together and to tailor the other dresses to the ladies and especially once they saw the unstitched wedding suit and actually pinned it to Demsey, found that only needed just a few more inches on the sides as your brothers showed what notes they had taken of your wedding dress and repeated that the two match together before Count Javyn Jabire came into the shop at Demsey’s instructions in the letter Demsey had penned and sent to him the night before.
“Count.” You greeted happily, seeing him again, he had been there for the Kamoba battle and had of course bet on his friend and when Demsey had caught sight of him had talked with him during lunch while you and your family were talking with the Royal Family.
“You still sure about this?” Javyn questioned as he stood on the pedestal and got fitted for his own wedding suit.
“Absolutely, there is no doubt in my mind.” Demsey grinned.
“And this doesn’t seem too sudden for you?” Javyn questioned as the tailor made his measurements and walked away to write them down. .
“Nope, actually,” Demsey began as he gestured for Javyn to lean his way.
“She’s already with child, my child, time is of the essence.” Demsey revealed in a low whisper before putting his finger to his lips to keep that revelation a secret.
“Ah, I see, you celebrated her victory in style did you?” Javyn couldn’t help but chuckle softly.
“Something like that, a gentlemen never…” Demsey began.
“Oh I know, I know, I would never say anything anyway. But congratulations on both counts then.” Javyn offered amiably as this suddenly made a lot more sense to him.
“Then I take it that the saying is true that ‘mouras have been bred to be irresistible’.” Javyn teased as Demsey made a series of noises and facial expressions of agreement.
“So this couldn’t be helped then?” Javyn noted.
“No it could not, thankfully.” Demsey beamed happily.
“Well I’m happy for you and I wish you the best.” Javyn offered.
“Oh just wait, Audra invited several of her friends who are flying in and will be here hopefully by tonight, I saw a troll or two that might catch your eye.” Demsey teased back.
“Don’t bring me into temptation, I can barely keep Lady Wollworth and Lady Castana at bay as it is. I take it Lady Whitesale is not taking this news well.” He furthered.
“No, I don’t suppose she is, that’s actually why you do not see Princess Benyana in the mix. Benny tried to betray Audra and myself to the Whitesales by making up the most egregious lies and did Sierge heinously wrong.” Demsey informed him before he told his best friend some of the more nasty particulars.
“So in my experience, Benny was the outlier, the other mouras are perfectly amiable, it’s individuals like her that give the whole lot a bad name. So I wouldn’t take her and her conduct as an indicator on mouras, if anything, take Audra or Calla as your cue onto the true moura’s disposition.” Demsey reassured his friend before a herd of other customers came into the shop, but they were all new faces to everyone except your family as you and they all hugged each other tightly and received them happily.
“Your housekeeper told us where to find you, here, as you asked.” Jenniverre offered you a fig as they were all still in their riding leathers as you started laughing as you hugged them all and thanked them for coming as they all handed you figs of all kinds as you happily took them and eagerly inhaled the figs in between introducing your friends to the Voyambis and Count Javyn Jabire who stared at the moura troll in front of him in awed wonder because she was the most gorgeous thing he had ever seen.
Her name was Jenniverre Saphairines, she had the most gorgeous pastel indigo skin which matched with her gold moura marks was a heavenly contrast. Her hair was a gorgeous platinum blonde and the way that leather riding suit hugged her voluptuous body was threatening to send his body into a tizzy because he had never, in his life, looked at a more gorgeous creature in his life.
Meanwhile Sierge was in a similar state, staring at Adrilody. If Benny had been beautiful, Adrilody was exquisite. Where Benny felt like a force like a hurricane, all wild and alluring in her air of danger which had been exciting at first. But she was all together different. Like the calm and beautiful rainbow after the storm. All pleasant and calm and her energy was happy, upbeat and peaceful. She was just...darling and he could tell she was all sweet like honey without the sting of the bees.
“So where’s Benny?” Adrilody asked as she noticed her biggest rival and cousin was not in attendance.
“She left by train to go home last night, she was no longer welcome here.” Your mother informed her.
“Ah, I take it from your tone, she lived up to her reputation.” Adrilody gathered.
“What’s her reputation now?” You asked curiously.
“Oh she’s known as Benny the Bitch now, she’s gone to three different courts to try to court different bachelors just in the last year, and she’s all about the quick fix and the immediate payoff and she’ll burn any bridge if she thinks she can get a better greener pasture at the other end and benefit in any way. She has gotten banned from five different courts in total, she keeps having her grandmother do a purification spell on her so that she can regain her virginity over and over again, she’s lost it, I don’t know how many times now. She only took this invitation because it came with the promise that her rank would not suffer and the super high pay out, because before now, her rank has suffered, does anyone know what rank she has now?” Adrilody explained.
“She tried to manipulate Audra into getting a Dowager status.” Loreiris revealed as all the new comer’s eyes grew wide as they all grimaced.
“She didn’t get it.” You reassured them as they all blew out a breath of relief.
“Does anyone know what she did get?” Adrilody asked.
“Tavnit.” Leumeni revealed with a smug grin.
“Oh thank the gods! Finally!” They all exclaimed as you could only just shake your head.
“What does tavnit mean?” Sierge asked.
“It means “no master” it means that a bride is no longer allowed to be in the bride system because she will do more damage than good and that she is beyond her welcome in it. I know this because I have Tavnit, because of the mourkatili.” You answered as they all gasped, most of them in outrage.
“It’s ok, I’m relieved I have it honestly. It means I’m not a slave to the system. I mean I’m having a Sirerinna Wedding for crying out loud. Don’t feel sorry for me, I’m getting a happily ever after with the love of my life, the system can hang itself for all I care.” You insisted with a laugh.
“Don’t be offended, just be relieved that none of you have to contend with her anymore, but she did leave behind one last victim. Sierge.” You said as you gestured over to him.
“Oh I’m so sorry.” They all offered Sierge.
“Well, like the saying says, ‘when something seems too good to be true, it usually is’.” Sierge commented as he did his best to keep his composure as the others gave him apologetic looks before they went from the dress salon to the moura jewelry shop called Orianna,  that was right next door to get jewelry and other accessories for their wedding suits, even though Demsey didn’t need much of anything because your trunk of goodies had already set him up really well for all he needed or even wanted.
“So once we are done here, we have a lot to do, we need to preserve all those figs and then we have henna to do, so much henna.” Your mother suggested once everyone got what they wanted and needed from both stores.
Javyn suddenly, uncharacteristically felt that his business didn’t need much of any attending to as Demsey did all he could from his home office as Javyn did the same, trying to do as much business as quickly as he could from Demsey’s office too, as Javyn asked to come and stay with Demsey for the week since once your henna was done and needed to set, the girls came to apply the henna mixture to the boys and the rest of the Voyambi family after doing Myra Bellafont’s family and Jane and the Raymonds of course.
“So why is it white? I thought henna was usually black or even dark red?” Sierge asked as Adrilody applied it to him as he was more than happy to be in a state of undress, in only his breeches that came down to his knees but was otherwise naked and only hoped she liked what she saw as he had gone through the book and picked the design that appealed to him the most. Of course having to be shaved clean and scrubbed so that the skin was clean and fresh also made a big difference too. He wasn’t wild about losing his chest hair but having Adrilody attend to him, he’d happily go bald head to toe if it meant she’d be the one to do it because having her near was sending him into a tizzy again.
“Because for millenia, purebred mouras could capture light into clouds, long before electricity. Well when mouras would do this in the light of the full moon, they created what’s called “black light clouds” and they’re this most unusual shade of indigo violet purple but more blueish. When all the lights are off but a black light cloud is turned on, everything white glows a light blue and other colors can glow too. The white will make your body glow in the light. Audra is covered from head to toe in it so her whole body will glow, even through her clothes if they are sheer enough. It’s a tradition in many cultures for the women having henna are exempt from any housework or chores or anything for as long as the henna lasts. But the moura twist on this is there’s an aphrodisiac in the henna and it’s a sign of very good fortune if she falls pregnant before it wears off. Like an ink stain on your hand. But since she is already pregnant, she’ll just enjoy all the extra sex regardless.” Adrilody grinned as she focused on her work and did her best to ignore the handsomeness of her subject.
“And why am I being painted in it then?” Sierge asked as he watched her work in awed wonder, she was clearly an artist and it was a great honor to have himself be her canvas.
“Well, that’s another tradition everyone in all the friends and families involved in the wedding party get it done on them, it’s seen as very good luck if a wedding plants seeds of metaphorical love in others who attended the wedding and are wearing the henna get married to others wearing the henna too, we just came from The Palace of Windsor and applied some to the Raymonds and Ramsey, Octavia, Axal and Drina all got matching henna so when the black light turns on, the four of them make up a romantic unit, which here might be untraditional but in Dorierra, it’s not unusual at all, and of course Charlotte got a specific pattern that I also applied to Zax so it’ll show up on them too and even Jane, I did her hands and feet cause that’s all she wanted but Rian got the same so that even they will show up as a couple too. So that part of the tradition is already being played out, so you’re off the hook in that respect, but you are part of the wedding party, closest brother to the groom, so of course you would have a fair amount.” Adrilody explained as she kept looking at the book and then back at her handiwork on his chest to make sure she was still applying this correctly, using the right technique and following the design because if she looked into his eyes too long, she felt like she could get lost in them but she had to bide her time because she had heard from Calla what Benny had put Sierge though and she knew she needed to give him time to heal from the hurt Benny caused and hoped that Sierge wouldn’t be against mouras all together because of Benny.
And Adrilody, believed that the design chosen was indicative of the person and had watched Sierge closely as he went through the book to find a design since Sierge could pick out any design he wanted while Demsey was getting the same exact designs from your mother and grandmother as they painted him with the henna too while also casting specific spells in a chant like song and poem while they did it to ensure that Demsey would never raise a hand to you in anger or say a mean hurtful, cutting remark or let his eyes wander from you and be faithful to you in all things and of course satisfy you in every way he could.
However the design that Sierge picked out was telling to Adrilody. In her experience, men who had been wounded but were trying to tough it out usually got this design. The proud lion’s head showed strength, bravery and regal confidence but betrayed hurt and battle scars.
“So do you want this exactly how it is in the books or do you want any kind of twist with it?” Adrilody asked.
“You know, I really like the design in the book but you’re the artist, take whatever liberties you want, I’m sure it’ll come out better than the book if you do.” Sierge answered as Adrilody smiled happily as she finished the lion’s head and began to work on the mane and no longer needed to look back at the book and went head first in her own unique design.
“So what design do you think you’ll get?” Sierge asked her.
“I don’t know, I haven’t decided yet, I usually do most of mine in a mirror except for my back which I can’t reach but Jenniverre, Calla and Audra are really good at this and Jodhaa and Loreiris are just as much masters at every art including henna as they are the art of wielding the blade. I’m sure Audra especially will give me something awesome, she’s like me, she takes the traditional and gives it a twist and a spin and makes it so much more and so much better than the original. That’s why she’s such a good fighter, she shows great creativity and ingenuity but never at the cost of her own integrity.” Adrilody answered.
“Whereas Benny doesn’t.” Sierge realized.
“Nope. But I hope you won’t use Benny to judge us all and think that because she’s that way, that all of us are, because that’s not true. I mean she’s my cousin for crying out loud and even I am ashamed of her behavior and usually avoid her at home and she may technically be family but she is far from being a friend and much closer to being a foe to me personally, she likes to say that family should stick together but she backstabbed her own brothers in the Kamoba but still demands their loyalty which is wrong. She’s tried to burn me a few times in every sense, that’s why I and everyone else steer clear of her. She’s the exception and nothing like what a good moura bride should be, she takes every bad trait and turns it up to its maximum, thinking she’s being original but sadly she’s just being cliche. She had promise in the beginning but her obsession at being the biggest baddest motherfucker in the room has obviously led to her downfall. Audra was the standard for many good reasons and Benny always resented that she couldn’t reach it and instead wanted to set her own standard. Too bad it was just in the wrong direction. I’m just sorry you got mauled in the process and I wish you were the first and last but sadly, Benny leaves a trail of carnage wherever she goes and I had hoped for Audra’s sake that this place would have been the exception that even Benny would have realized that betraying Audra when she was already being betrayed by everyone around her should have been a step too far, but unfortunately, no. Just be grateful she is now far away and hopefully you’ll never have to see her again, let alone deal with her. Honestly I don’t even want to go back home if she’s going to be there raising all kinds of hell and stirring up family drama and all kinds of trouble trying to put the blame for her own consequences on anyone but herself. Honestly, you dodged a bullet not being bonded to her as did every other guy who she did the same thing to. You deserve better.” Adrilody offered apologetically.
“Thank you.” Sierge thanked her as her words were like a healing balm for his heart that she was painting over.
“Why didn’t you accept the offer to come here?” Sierge asked.
“Because the royal family could only afford for two to come “officially”. Honestly with the communications cut between Audra and the rest of us back home, we didn’t know what to think. First she leaves, then a year later we hear that she’s widowed and has shakan status and then nothing again until only a few weeks ago when only her family was invited to see her but when they called back during the messengerari’s it was the most horrific news until only a couple of days ago when she contacted me directly. A lot can happen in two years. But the chance to come to her Sirerinna Wedding, which in marinai is a true love wedding, like you’re marrying your soulmate, till death do you part, grow old together, kind of wedding because moura brides in the system usually have three to four weddings in their lives and Sirerinna is supposed to be the last, the biggest, most important in her life, it’s the one that counts for everything, none of her real friends would ever turn that down, that’s why so many of us came as fast as we could get packed, we will happily pile onto a bed or sleep in a stall with our griffins for a chance to go to that if it’s for her because we know that she would do the same for us because she has always been the best of friends to all of us and for Benny to do her so wrong just shows how awful Benny is, not Audra. From what she’s been through, it’s the least we can do and to hear what she went through while we were painting her with henna this morning, to hear it directly from her, it was heartbreaking and it’s a miracle she’s alive and she deserves better than she’s gotten so now all of us are just hoping your brother does right by her and treats her lovingly from now on.” Adrilody revealed.
“So are you married?” Sierge asked.
“No, I’ve just entered the system and just got my own classification, I’m actually a few years younger than Benny, I haven’t even gotten any offers yet, let alone get seen by any potentials yet and even right now, my mother is negotiating my proper asking price with the stable masters. But with Benny getting a tavnit status from here and with how badly she did not just you but this whole court because the Raymonds related what she did to the Royal Family who were not pleased at all, they were quite angry actually and from what I heard from Mama Yalin when I was doing this to her this morning, they were talking with the stable masters and when Benny gets home, who knows what kind of punishment she will face. Because you have to understand that every bride who leaves Dorierra, everyone is looking to her to judge her and the whole system by her and her conduct and that’s usually why most brides have to behave in such a way that is above reproach, except for Benny apparently, and because she’s come here and made a muck of it, now any bride who comes through has to be her opposite, they have to be extra good to help overcome and overcorrect the damage she’s done to repair the damage to the moura brides system’s reputation. And those brides, oof, they’re a just a different kind of severe and they’re just on the opposite end of the spectrum and make us out to be perfect, innocent, guileless, nonthreatening saints who would never dream of being clever because clever and conniving are too similar to some and that’s not fair either, because I can tell you right now that if the masters implement that protocol, none of the brides you see now would be welcome back here because all of us are classified as Rissa, which is middle of the road- too clever for the innocents, too soft hearted for intrigue and not sharp enough in wit to survive the most extreme of attacks but too witty for the simple minded and easily offended, like that saying, ‘a jack of all trades is a master of none but better than a master of one’. But my parents have always encouraged me to just be the best version of myself that I can be and at this point I’m just hoping that the right suitor will look at me and just accept me as a I am and not cut off parts of me that are inconvenient or that he doesn’t like, like the way Edward did to Audra, taking a square peg and cutting it to try to force it into a round hole, but Demsey is doing his best to mend the damage and cuts and at least try to glue on all the cut off pieces to try to make it whole again, which helps quite a bit and reassures us a lot.” Adrilody mused as she finished up with the mane of the lion and continued to fill in as she went, letting her hands practically discover the pattern that seemed to bloom in her head as she did it.
Like a writer discovering a story as they write it or an artist or architect discovering a design as they work on it as she scooted closer and let her arm rest on the other half of his chest to help brace herself and her other hand as she seemed to hyperfocus on the task at hand and that was to make Sierge’s chest her own mural as Sierge reveled in the close contact and the feel of her breath on his chest as his imagination was sweetly torturing him of fantasies of either her over him or her under him and bringing her to ecstasy and fantasizing about how much sweeter she would taste.
“Ok, if you’ll excuse me I have to refill, I’m getting low.” She excused herself as she got up to refill her piping bag with more mix.
“So how’s it going?” Jenniverre asked Adrilody in Marinai as she was there at the bowl refilling her bag too.
“It’s going good, he chose the lion, so he’s obviously trying to play it tough, Benny hurt him something deep. To kill his unborn child like it was a weed in a flower garden. That has to hurt something awful, but he’s been giving me free rein so it’s turning out really nicely. I always do my best work when I’m given free rein.” Adrilody answered.
“Mine is half way to falling for me I think, he keeps asking me all these questions about myself and what quarter I’m from and what traditions and culture I’ve been brought up with. He told me I’m his first moura troll he’s ever seen before and I think this mix is a little too heavy on the aphrodisiac powder if he’s like this with just the base work on his skin.” Jenniverre revealed.
“Well if you want him, you better snatch him fast, because with Benny tearing through here and setting this court on fire, I doubt us rissa’s will get a chance to come back, it’ll probably go to the aquiras.” Adrilody reminded her friend.
“Ooh, I didn’t think of that.” Jenniverre realized before she added another spoonful of aphrodisiac powder to the mix both in the bag and in the bowl and another few drops of the liquid pheromones in the carrier oil and another spoonful of glitter and tried to casually stir it in to make it look like she was adding more glitter to the mix before she hastily refilled her piping bag and returned to Javyn as Adrilody had already filled her bag with the mix before Jenniverre “enhanced” it.
“So what do you think you own price will be?” Sierge asked Adrilody curiously as she came back over and settled back into her rhythm of her work.
“Psh, I have no idea. A lot of factors play into the price. But my advice to you is do not try to find another moura bride right now or right after your brother’s wedding, not until you fully heal from the damage of the last. And don’t try to find a better “nicer” version of what you just experienced, because that’s not fair to you or to her.” Adrilody advised him in all seriousness.
“And honestly, look at the service Benny did for you. What Benny excels at is finding someone’s weaknesses and exploiting them and working them like a horse to the plow without any reward of food or shelter or any other necessities but instead their wants in that moment but nothing else which in the grand scheme of things, usually is nothing of real lasting value or consequence. Now that you know your weaknesses as does anyone and everyone else. Work on yourself, build up those weaknesses so that they can never be your downfall again. Because even though your family isn’t saying so, there was still a breach of trust between you and your family. Especially Demsey and even your parents. You’re grown so your father isn’t really permitting your mother from really chastizing or disciplining you for even giving the smallest of half truths to Benny in the first place. You should start by re-earning every bit of trust and respect back from everyone in your friends and family and don’t let everyone put all the blame on Benny and make yourself out to be the biggest victim and shirk any responsibility or any guilt for whatever part you had to play in it. And don’t take your winnings in the Kamoba to do that for you, money can be won or lost as quickly as it rains then shines. And also realize that there was truth in Benny’s criticisms of you too. She wasn’t just saying whatever hurtful thing she could think of. The truth when not paired with tact can hurt someone’s feelings and someone’s sense of self just as much as a lie can. Benny doesn’t mince her words when she doesn’t need to. She can be very direct and brutal in her honesty. So maybe take that to heart too and use that as your stepping stone to rebuild whatever she damaged in you too and then refortify her damage and turn her truths into an inaccuracy. That’s always the best revenge is when a harsh criticism while rooted in the past reality- no longer holds true in the present. Use this to grow yourself and your personality. That would be my advice.” Adrilody suggested as Sierge was awestruck by how profound she was in bestowing such wisdom and realized, she was right, about everything.
He had a lot of work to do on himself to be worthy of a bride like her. If anyone deserved a dowager status, it was the woman in front of him now and while it was true, he was comparing her to Benny, she had a point, that wasn’t fair to her. He really just needed to look at her and see her, not anyone else. Not a fantasy, but the reality and he had a lot to make up for and needed to make this right, because everyone deserved better from him and he shouldn’t have been so caught up in his own sexual pleasure, that he traded in his own family’s trust and respect for it. No wonder Benny went after him first, because he made himself easy prey to her. He practically rolled over and put his own throat in her jaws and had the audacity to be surprised when she bit down.
Once she was done with his chest, she moved onto his back and started humming to herself as she continued to work, pulling elements from many of the designs in the book and blending them together beautifully as Sierge was just happy and content to be her canvas and welcomed the peace that her company brought him before your mother and your grandmother came over to check up on her handiwork.
“Wow, new design Lody?” Your mother appraised as she looked over Lody’s work on Sierge in awe and appreciation.
“Yup, he let me have free rein, so I’m taking advantage, come back here,” Adrilody invited as they came around and they all gasped when they saw the impressive design radiate from the center of his shoulder blades out, like a huge mandela as your mother and grandmother took keen notes of it and looked at each other while giving each other meaningful looks with scheming grins as they each praised Lody for each well executed element of the design as Lody had to refill her piping bag twice now. Although she tried to gather the mix from the outside of the bowl where Jenniverre hadn’t “enhanced” it too much.
“You are blessed to have such an artisan as her to do your henna such as this. It’s a one of a kind work of art.” Loreiris praised Sierge which made both Sierge and Lody smile happily.
“We will have to do the same on her.” Your grandmother whispered to your mother in marinai.
“Don’t you dare.” Lody practically sang out back in marinai, trying to keep her voice and tone pleasant so as not to raise Sierge’s suspicions.
“Why not?” Your mother asked curiously.
“Can you imagine what my mother would think? For me to receive Benny’s damaged leftovers? Benny mauled his heart, mind and soul, I don’t need him thinking I’m a nicer version of Benny and I have enough problems with people thinking that about me as it is. I do not wish to be in her shadow any more than she liked to be in Audra’s. I am my own unique person. And I need my mate, whoever he may be, to see that, not see me as another her or constantly compare me to her either for my elevation or decline. Plus I’m sure Benny was brutal in her truths of criticisms, and they are still truths and I would much rather have an honorable man who would not give his self respect, much less the faith and trust of his family over to an enemy parading around as his lover and confidant for his own sexual release and momentary happiness, I’m sure he had his own motives for doing it and until I know them, I can’t trust him and neither can anyone else, so don’t you dare match my henna with his.” Adrilody repeated with a smile like “fuck you” was written on her teeth and a determined look in her eyes.
“That is true, you’re right, I apologize.” Loreiris offered.
“Thank you.” Adrilody accepted.
“So...I feel like you’re talking about me.” Sierge murmured.
“We are, we are discussing the meaning of the henna you chose and what that means about you as a person. You chose a lion, a male lion specifically. It means regal dignity, power and strength.” Adrilody revealed as Sierge seemed to puff his chest out proudly.
“It also means, that you’ve been hurt and you’re making a show of strength and confidence in trying to remain composed as you conceal your real hurt and that the mane is a defense to keep you from garnering any more battle scars. You have gotten mauled by the wolf so the lion, is an appropriate reaction.” Loreiris deduced.
“Exactly.” Adrilody nodded in agreement.
“Wait, do all of these have meanings like that?” Sierge asked.
“Oh yes, mouras are bred to read into meanings behind preferences which there has been countless years of science and research behind it in Dorrierran custom. Red can mean passion, or rage, lust or danger, it is an extreme color, the color of war and death or carnage or the color of a blush. Depending on the shade or hue. Blue can mean peace, or inaction, even laziness, tranquility or depth. Like the ocean, peaceful one moment but can be caught up in a storm the next. Green can mean life, vibrance, or the other extreme, sickness or decay, like bread mold and gangrene, again, depending on the shade and hue. Black can be mysterious, or deadly, secretive yet seductive because it shows shape but hides intent. White can be lifeless, devoid of life and color just as much as it means innocence and a fresh new start, like a piece of white paper, just waiting to be turned into a piece of art that is the purpose of the white henna, to indicate a fresh new start, it is simply a thick liquid in the bowl, but when used with intent and intelligence, can create works of art, like what is on you right now. Gold can be opulence and all consuming greed. But greater meanings is the symbolism of the patterns and animals chosen as well. A panther is strength true, but lonesome, solitary. A tortoise is slow, but deliberate, and can endure. An elephant is large, with an exceptional memory and strong family ties, but like the tortoise is slower, much more deliberate and cautious but couragous enough to go into war just as much as it is willing to help it’s rider build, moving beams with it’s trunk. An eagle is proud but aloof, a hawk is a keen hunter with great speed, but not soft or comforting. An owl is wise and long living, but detached. A viper is deadly, yet protective and demands respect and will bluff before it bites, trying to warn anything that threatens it. You chose a lion, lions like to hunt in prides, be close to families, they are defensive of their territory and will die defending it. The lion in the artwork is strong, brave, courageous. Who’s strong clean lines invoke respect and admiration. But little creativity or a willingness to bend before they break. But you did not stick to the design in the book but in fact you are open to new designs and change and even now with the softer curves in the lines that Adriolody has given the design, shows she is encouraging you to bend your will and accept that your will has to bend before it’s broken completely. You must yield for now. But will gain your strength back and be stronger than you have ever been before,  which is good, you are letting go of some old to embrace new, but you still have a long way to go.” Loreiris sagely explained before she and Jodhaa left to gather the remaining henna for their own designs.
“Holy shit, does she always hand everyone’s ass to them on a platter like that?” Sierge asked Adrilody over his shoulder which got her snicker laugh and nearly snot all over him.
“Yes, be grateful she went easy on you. She has this test, where she hands you a bunch of colored squares painted on thin pieces of wood and asks you to pick your favorites and your least favorites of all the colors. For every color you love yet hate has a meaning and she will outright fuck your mind up with how accurately she hands you your ass and shows you yourself in the most accurate mirror there is- that has nothing to do with your outward appearance. She has taught many this test and what each color means whether that person likes or hates it but once she teaches you the meanings of the colors, she will not read for you again because you’ll of course choose the colors based on their meanings, not on the colors themselves to try to throw the test off, trying to get the best result. She says the best and most honest results are when someone takes it for the first time, thinking it’s just a fun little game.” Adriolody murmured in a low whisper before she finished the design on his back and moved to his arms.
“Would you do the test on me?” Siege asked curiously.
“I didn’t bring it with me, and I doubt anyone else did either. But it’s usually a fun little “game” that is played with the groom before the wedding, and the positive is shared with the groom, but the negatives are shared with the bride so that she is given a heads up so to speak about what kind of man she is marrying and what she should look out for.” Adrilody revealed in a low murmur as his arm was up and she could get a whiff of his pheromones. The henna is supposed to be affecting him, not her. It wasn’t even on her but here she was, thirsting over him. Not only did he look good but smelled heavenly to her too, it was going to be hard for her to fight the attraction once she was painted with the henna too. If only she had met him before Benny mauled him and if only he had met her before Benny. Adrilody reminded herself that once again, it was not her job to heal her cousin’s hurt. And if there was ever going to be any hope for any kind of friendship, let alone a relationship between the two of them, there had to be no confusion, conflict or distraction in his mind or heart, and right now, there was much of all three.
Once she was done she had Sierge stand in front of a messengerari to capture her work, having him slowly turn since her mural in henna stretched all around him and down his arms and was made in such a way so that even when his arms were up or down, they added to it.
“This is your best work yet Lody.” Your mother and grandmother and all the others praised as they looked it over.
“Sometimes when you give a wild horse it’s rein, it’ll show you secret lakes in the mountains.” Jenniverre quoted from one of the holy books.
“So true, she has made you into something extraordinary Sierge. Part of me thinks you shouldn’t be in the bride system Lody, Dorierra needs a talent like you at home to do this to the other brides in the Hanging Garden Quarter if not many more.” Jodhaa complimented.
“Thank you, but now my hands are tired and sore, not to mention the rest of me. I should get back to Mirador with Audra and take a bath and rest. Audra’s henna should be dry and be ready to be washed off by now, I look forward to any art she decides to bestow upon me, Audra also does her best work with free rein.” Adrilody suggested before they left, all the guys trying to stay still while they waited for the henna to dry and to stain their skin and were told to leave it on for at least an hour or two. But Audra’s henna, was supposed to be stay on all day so that when it washed off, she would practically glow.
“That looks amazing Sierge.” Amara and Kiera praised since their henna had been done first upstairs in private and only had it on their hands, feet, legs and chest, so they could still walk around as usual as Callie had wanted practically her whole body done.
“Thanks, hey, can you get Ma’ma?” He requested before they nodded and informed their mother that Sierge wanted to see her.
“Hey, oh wow, Adrilody did an amazing job with this design! I didn’t see it in the book, if I had, I would have requested this one.” His mother Gwendolyn praised.
“Thanks, all I told Adrilody was that I wanted a lion but that she could have free reign on how she gave it to me. And she did a fantastic job. And we got to talk while she put it on me and she made some really good points as she did it. She told me what lions meant in her culture and what they symbolized and she was really accurate. And she made the point that even though I was “mauled” metaphorically speaking by that bitch wolf. It was partially my fault for willingly laying down and offering myself up to be her prey. And I never should have put my own pleasure at the cost of everyone’s confidence and trust in me. I’m sorry. I’ll happily submit to any discipline you see fit.” Sierge offered to his mother who almost burst into tears.
“You should definitely apologize to your brother. And whatever he decides, you should do, since your offense was against him and Audra. You can make it up to her by keeping her condition a secret and make whatever amends she wants.” Gwen advised before Sierge came over to Demsey and did just that, offering a sincere and heart felt apology.
“Honestly, it’s going to take time to learn to trust you with anything again, and the fact that you gave her even as much as you did, means that I now know your price for our brotherly bond, which should have been priceless and it should have been sacred enough for you to never breach it and the moment you had the inkling that she was trying to jeopardize that, you should have backed off and quit her and put as much distance between her and yourself as you could, she had you ignoring the head on your shoulders by squeezing the one between your legs. And now because of your conduct, that put this family’s loyalty and integrity into question, I had Audra’s mother and grandmother literally at my throat, questioning me and my own loyalty and integrity and faithfulness, you saw what happened with Benny’s own brothers, how the moment they knew she was working you, they distanced themselves from her as did Calla and her brothers and Audra. You should have picked up on all of their cues and don’t go running where everyone is fleeing from.” Demesy lectured.
“Yeah, I hear you. I agree. I should have been more careful and read the signs of fire, instead of being enchanted by the glow of the flame.” Sierge answered, quoting from a holy book himself.
“Exactly.” Demsey smiled in relief that Sierge seemed to get it.
“I like the alicorn though.” Sierge complimented, appreciating the art on his brother’s body in turn.
“Thanks, apparently, that’s what Audra got, she’s always been a unicorn in the wild, untamable sense, the Morrigans shot her down and broke her horn, but according to her mother and her grandmother, I helped her up and gave her wings so she can take to the skies and fly right along side me. Which I thought was really sweet.” Demsey grinned as he looked at it all.
“That’s interesting, Adrilody said that all the designs have meanings and Loreiris confirmed it. Loreiris said the lion meant that I’m making a show of strength to conceal my own hurt from the mauling Benny did and, she of course was right.” Sierge revealed.
“Well damn, I wonder what the alicorn means then?” Demsey asked as he looked at it in a handheld mirror since his chest hair and the chest hair of all the guys had to be shaved off and their skin scrubbed to make the skin ready to take on the henna.
“I think Audra will tell you when you see her on your wedding day.” Sierge ventured.
“I know I can’t wait to see Jenniverre, I imagine you’re anxious to see Adrilody too, I wonder if she’ll get anything that matches yours, because Jenniverre said that I picked what she always gets herself, the stingray and that they mean peace and elegance.” Javyn practically giggled excitedly as he appraised his own henna and was delighted that it was such a clean, crisp contrast on his dark midnight blue skin as he just couldn’t stop marveling at it.
“I hope so.” Sierge found himself grinning and quite liking the thought of that.
“So? How was it?” You asked once your family came back.
“Javyn got a stingray, so who wants to put a stingray on me?” Jenniverre squealed excitedly.
“She likes him a lot, she upped the dosage of the isla in the mix,” Lody murmured in your ear in marinai as your eyes grew wide and gave her a meaningful look that she returned.
“Mom, grandma, how about you two do Jenni, I’ll take care of Lody, on my own.” You suggested as you let them take the remainder of the mix to put on Jenniverre so you could mix up fresh henna for Lody.
“So what did Sierge get?” You asked as you mixed it together thoughtfully, making sure it was the correct and was in balance.
“A lion.” Lody answered as she undressed and got into the special henna seat.
“Oooh, yikes,” you sucked in a breath through your teeth with a grimace.
“I mean Benny mauled him bad.” Lody defended.
“True,” you had to admit as you poured the mix into the bag.
“But he did let me have free rein, so I made the most amazing kick ass lion I’ve ever made, I captured it and saved it to the messengerari, here, do you have a hand held one?” She said before you handed what looked like a special hand held mirror as she opened the handle and rolled out the special typer on it and keyed in the code to bring it up.
“Wow! That’s exquisite, I hope you can duplicate it for your book. If that were in the book, everyone would get it, that is amazing!” You marveled.
“Now, please, don’t match it.” Lody requested.
“The shadow?” You guessed cryptically because when reading the meaning of henna designs or colors and their meanings, there was “the light” meaning the positives, and then “the shadows” meaning what was hidden by the light shining upon the object, when one read into the meanings of the designs and one knew the lights as well as the shadows, it helped decipher the meaning and much more importantly the intent of the person you were working with.
“Yup, the shadow.” Lody nodded in confirmation.
“Well do you mind if I still use elements and hints of this? Because this is epic and I want to try to do this justice but I promise I won’t give you a lioness or copy it faithfully, still give you something unique and one of a kind, but can I do a jaguar or a leopard, tiger perhaps?” You asked hopefully.
“Tiger.” She decided.
“Yes! Tiger it is.” You said as you had her keep the picture up to draw from as you worked diligently, trying to copy the style and the details but not the overall design as her own pattern seemed to bloom on her skin as you discovered it just as she had done with Sierge, making her whole body a mural of greater beauty than what she had done, having to refill the piping bag several times over, careful not to make sure the mix was correct and not out of balance.
“So I have a theory.” Lody noted as you were doing her arms.
“I’m all ears.” You answered.
“Because of Benny, I think this court will go to the aquiras, the same way they did in the others she tore through.” Lody murmured quietly.
“And what are you? Did you get your classification?” You asked.
“Rissa,” She answered.
“Did Benny steal the nescia status because of the other maulings in the other courts?” You asked.
“I think so. The stable masters were hoping if the whole family had a disciplinary action, that the whole family would get after her, and we tried, but, like a wolf, she mauled us too and had every excuse in the book and then some to validate her actions. I’ve already seen others come and demand audiences and auditions with my other sisters and cousins, demanding a nicer version of Benny and retribution. Thankfully Mama Chikati saw that they all had revenge and retribution in their hearts and that they meant harm and would not allow us to go to them. She instead happily took the downgrade to keep us from ever being the prey to them, knowing that they were hungry lions, simply looking to devour a poor dog in place of the wolf that mauled them.” Lody confessed.
“Although I’m happy that Sierge chose a lion whose mouth was closed, it showed that he is not actively looking to devour, simply, trying to be stoic while his wounds heal.” Lody noted.
“Now I worry for when the winter comes, I worry he will be frozen in such a state and waste away. Some chill will calm the burn and the rage, but too much will freeze and then burn again. What he needs is the comfort of his familial pride, to heal to recover, but once he is healed, hunt again, but not for the closest, easiest prey. And not to become pray to anyone else. But hunt for a prize of his own. Once he realizes his own distaste for being in the shadows of others, coming into the light, will help, of course seeing you shine in the light, your stripes a sharp contrast to the solid black coat of that bitch wolf, the black will remind him that you are like her in a few ways, a capable hunter, cunning and clever, but never at the downfall of others but purely for the survival of yourself and your den, but that you stand out and don’t wait until dark to do anything, but instead can choose to move in broad daylight and still have stealth, you do as you please, independent from a pride.” You murmured as you continued to use a striped pattern on her skin with gorgeous mini patterns both in and out of the stripes.
“Only you would see the truth of the choice, both in the light and in the shadows.” Lody praised you.
“Well all big cats share similarities, at least you didn’t go full wild dog, or a shark, seagull even.” You laughed, teasing her.
“Oh my god, don’t you dare put any of that on me.” Adrilody cackled.
“People like to say pigeons are rats with wings, nothing compared to seagulls. Those things will bite your hand for the bread and then crap right in your hair.” You barked a deep belly laugh.
“True, although they have no fear, opportunistic as they are.” Lody noted.
“That’s what Benny should be, no black wolf, just a greedy gaul.” You teased which made both of you erupt into deep laughter as you smudged and smeared the henna as you tried to quickly wipe it up and clean it before it stained that way.
But you could see, even in this moment, that Lody was fighting as you couldn’t help but feel some sense of dejavu.
“I remember when I first met Demsey, and there was that first interaction and instant attraction. But being in such a polite society. These English men, they like to think they have such high manners, such polite society. It’s pretty words and a show of civility. But pretty words can hide a silver bladed tongue, it can be the same here as it is in the orientals, where your manners are judged just as harshly. But once you find a gentle man who is gentle in any light or shadow, then you have something special. That’s what Demsey has always been, the same man in every light and shadow, he has the same kindness and affection in his eyes and in his touch in private as he does in a ballroom and never once has his touch ever had any hint of harm. Desperation from passion? Absolutely. Love and tenderness? Always. Respect, admiration and adoration? From that first moment on. First impressions are the hardest to break. Please don’t judge Sierge too harshly. He’s suffered and he is not at his best, but I’d gather close to his worst and the fact that he’s persevering and trying to remain composed, says a lot about his character too and yet you are fighting your attraction because your own pride is incensed on Benny’s behalf. I think if your attraction to him stays with you after the henna wears off and if your attraction to him stays long after the henna because your attraction started before the henna was ever a component. Don’t let Benny put a distaste in your mouth for this place or of him, much less his family because you do not want the same from Benny.” You advised.
“Deal, if he will like me enough to approach me at the stables, and never bring up Benny, I’d consider it.” Lody decided.
“Good.” You grinned.

The Character-Based Reasons Why Sara Chidouin Has the Highest Win Likelihood
So, okay. We all know Nankidai is, first and foremost, a writer. Don’t get me wrong, the art and gameplay are nice, and the music is... there, but Your Turn to Die is fantastic because of the game’s thematic consistency and incredible characters. Which is why the idea that Sara wins so often because she is so trustworthy and is a great leader always seemed like a very barebones analysis to me. Sure, it makes sense, but what would Nankidai convey through that? There’s definitely a message about trust that is implied, that trusting makes a person stronger, but Sara does not initially trust everyone, and not everyone trusts her. Every single character has plenty of people who don’t trust them and who they don’t trust. If anyone is good at working with and trusting people, it’s Reko (even despite her conflict with Alice), who becomes the big sister to this cast of characters. (BTW: this is a really long post. If you don’t want to read it all, scroll to the end and there’s a TL;DR).
So then, for what thematic reason is Sara so likely to win?
Personally, I would attribute her survival rate to another common theme throughout the game: her balance between prioritizing her own survival and that of the rest of the players. While Sara would never truly give her Sacrifice card to someone else, it’s doubtful that she would take the Sacrifice card to save anyone either. No other character has a similar inner balance, except Kanna in the Kanna Lives route (to be perfectly honest, I have not played the Shin lives route because I’m terrified of killing Kanna, so my knowledge may be lacking). Anyway, I am going to go down the list of characters and talk about why they’re not Sara, which I know everyone is just really, really, excited to hear (please don’t fall asleep). (Also not including dolls since our information on them is very limited at the moment).
I’m starting with the absolute worst person to start with: Joe Tazuna. He may not be a candidate, but he is still a character who dies and is thus worthy of an explanation. While he may have procrasinated to reveal that he was the Sacrifice, it was never truly a battle with Joe on whether to sacrifice himself. In the end, he will always prioritize everyone else’s survival. If there was a battle, it was between whether to save Sara right then and there or let everyone else survive, and although his connection to Sara is personal, this is still not self-prioritization.
Then there’s Keiji Shinogi (yes, I’m going by the Wiki order and you can’t stop me). At first, it may seem that logical, levelheaded Keiji prioritizes himself, but in Chapter 3 1-A, he readily accepts the tag if it means saving Sara. Keiji is traumatized by his own guilt, and thus does not seem to consider himself worthy of survival, unless it means being the smart one and thinking where no one else does. He may not have traded for Sara’s Sacrifice card in the Second Main Game, but it’s unclear whether he was planning to before Kanna took it herself (or rather, tried to). I theorize now that Keiji will have a say about his own death in Chapter 3 1-B, and it will depend on whether he is able to balance his own needs with the needs of everyone else.
Which brings me to Kanna Kizuchi, who I think has the most interesting arc in this regard. When the game begins, Kanna is extremely frightened, and we don’t really get to know her priorities since she is most definitely not thinking straight. As Kanna matures and developed into her own character, in spite of Sou’s suggestions to her, we learn she prioritizes other people’s surival over her own when she attempts to take Sara’s Sacrifice card. Now, this is where the disclaimer of “I Have not Played the Shin Lives Route” comes in extra handy, because I expect criticism here. Anyway, given that Sara logically wants to survive, and there are even character reasons to vote for Kanna (her being more ready for death), it seems very likely Sara would vote for Kanna, which would explain her extremely low 2.7% survival rate. This is a reflection of Kanna’s unshaking will to prioritize others’ survival over her own. However, when Shin dies, Kanna realizes she should never again attempt to sacrifice herself (particularly because he became a role model for her), and she begins, just like Sara, to find a balance, wherein she puts herself in danger only when logically necessary, while also caring for everyone else. As a result, and this is very shaky ground, I am putting forth that there are either no routes, or very few routes, from here on out, where Kanna dies. (The one thing I will say about this theory is that it partially contradicts my theory that the game cannot be a simulation because they would not simulate Gashu’s betrayal. While my argument mainly revolves around the metanarrative of prioritization of lives other than one’s own, these themes are reflected within the non-meta of the game itself, wherein Asunaro specifically tailors who receives the Sacrifice, Keymaster, and Sage cards. As a result, Kanna’s character arc revolving around surviving the Second Main Game makes no sense if she would have been the Sacrifice in the first place if not for Gashu. Although, her low win rate could be tied to the high likelihood that she would take Sara’s Sacrifice card).
Well, now that I’m off my tangent, let’s focus on Q-Taro. At the beginning of the game, Q-Taro, while not the brightest, takes a cold and logical approach. He is willing to sacrifice literal children--Kanna and Gin--because he doesn’t think they’re useful enough. However, his character flips (pun intended) when he presses the button and takes the poison for Gin. Q-Taro realizes that trust and self-sacrifice are noble traits, and he comes to prioritize them over his own survival, as he put his life on the line when he took the poison, when a lower dosage earlier would have been the more logical way to keep him and Gin alive. Q-Taro’s arc is intersting, but unlike Kanna, who becomes a reasonable person, his values flip entirely, particularly because his change was likely planned by Asunaro.
Then you have Shin. I don’t know what he does when he lives, and I have a whole theory about Shin’s 0.0% win rate, which I will possibly write some day and link in later, but I do have some stuff to say about his own character balance. It’s obvious that because of his fear of the win rates, Shin comes to prioritize his own life, despite all irrationality therein. He manipulates and lies for his own survival, mainly out of fear. When Shin realizes that Sara killed him instead of killing Kanna, as she prioritizes emotion over logic, he realizes that maybe he could have trusted her after all, and to die with as few regrets as possible, he gives her the Joe AI. This character change sounds like it contradicts my theory, but given that, at this point, Shin was pretty much already dead, it’s simply an interesting change within him that is representative of the theme of Your Turn to Die. Furthermore, I subscribe to the theory that Shin’s low win rate is a direct result of knowing he has a low win rate (fun bootstrap paradox times (Beethoven’s Fifth plays on electric guitar)), because this causes his self-preservation.
I mentioned Reko earlier, but I think this only needs a brief explanation (important note: I have only played the Reko dies route). Prior to the Death Game, while Alice was in jail, Reko learned that the “weak” do not deserve what’s coming to them. This indirectly causes her own kindness to Nao and Kanna in the Death Game. (Come to think of it, I don’t think this one’s going to be as brief as I thought). Reko enters the death game a changed woman, who already prioritizes the lives of others, and thus is entirely imbalanced. The fact that her past self kills her is beautifaly symbolic of why she died: because she could not balance her priorities, where she only cares about others now (which is why Nao saved modern Reko), and only really cared about herself in the past (because she thought that the “weak” did not deserve her help). As a result, in an act of pure selfishness, the AI, which has Reko’s past personality, kills human Reko. If modern Reko had been more balanced, perhaps she could have explained to Nao why it would make more logical sense to save the Reko AI.
And it’s perfect that Nao should come next. In general, Nao does not think for herself. Not until her suggestion that Sara should run away with her at the end of the Second Main Game did she do anything other than follow earliers or force herself into certain situations. This, of course, relates to the juxtaposition between her and Sara, who is a natural leader. However, it explains why there is not much to say about Nao other than the fact that she is so far removed from the issue of self-sacrifice vs. self-preservation.
Everything Kai did, up until his death, was to protect Sara. His job was to be her bodyguard, and Sara is the person who saved Kai from a life of murder. Kai dies because his silence in his efforts to protect Sara prevented a proper discussion over whether it was worth it to kill the Sage simply because they were the Sage.
Gin Ibushi, much like Kanna, started the game by prioritiznig the lives of others. Unlike Kanna, he did not change, particularly because there was no narrative reason for his change. Even when Gin was about to die, it was up to Q-Taro to decide between self-sacrifice and self-preservation. However, when Gin and Q-Taro were up on the targets, this was a symbolic message to Sara: you must choose between the self-preserving tendencies of Q-Taro and the self-sacrificing tendencies of Gin, who gave out his tokens for free, unaware of the consequences. While Gin has yet to die, his steadfast hold on his self-sacrificing beliefs would explain why his win rate is lower even than Kanna’s.
Gin would often cling to father figures due to his dad’s alcohol addiction, and Mishima was the first to experience this treatment. Mishima cared for Gin, but he knew Nao best, and his instruction that she vote for him would cause his death, because Mishima sacrificed himself for Nao. Mishima is interesting, because his self-sacrifice is less a result of a hope for everyone’s survival, and more about his desire for people to improve as human beings. He tells Nao to give him up when he is an AI, and instructs Reko to break his screen. Although Mishima is perhaps more self-sacrificng than Gin, his understanding of teaching others how to care about themselves is likely why his win rate is higher than both Gin’s and Kanna’s. This may also be a result of the fact that he is older and more capable, but his strange quirks also make him less trustworthy than both Gin and Kanna, which cancels his capabilities out. Thus his self-sacrificing beliefs would kill him, even if his understanding of self-preservation decreases the likelihood of his death.
Last but not least of the non-Sara characters, we have Alice Yabusame. Now, on this one, I am probably missing the most information, since I have absolutely no idea how he dies in the route where Reko survives. However, I can say that in the route where he survives, despite his understanding at the beginning of Chapter 2 that Reko had changed, he was unable to accept that the unchanged Reko was not human. This implies that Alice wants a version of Reko who both cares for others and values strength, suggesting a need for balance. I also know this is a big change from his attitude towards the beginning, where he believes that everyone should be as self-preserving as possible, and not get in anyone else’s way. The fact that Alice has to die to accept Reko’s change (I think???), it makes sense that his self-preserving tendencies would place him in the bottom half of win rates. Again, this theory is weakened by my ignorance.
Joe’s likely inevitable death contributes to Sara’s fear of the Sacrifice card, which perfectly balances her lack of desire to manipulate others with her desire to preserve herself. Sara is also often given the choice between wanting to win or escape with everyone, and the fact that character moments often hinge on her response illustrates Nankidai’s thematic goals. The choice between Shin and Kanna’s deaths, while about emotion and logic, are also about choosing between preserving oneself (voting for Kanna, who cannot contribute to Sara’s survival) and preserving others (Kanna is TOO YOUNG TO DIE). I do not mean to suggest that saving Kanna was necessarilly the “correct route.” Quite the opposite, in fact. I mean to suggest that the fact that Sara is presented this choice and that she does not have an immediate answer is exactly why she is so likely to win.
TL;DR i drone on about how sara is special and not like other characters, and how she cares about people but also about herself, so that’s the theme and stuff. there’s also a long, pretentious rant about the symbolism of reko’s death. and a doctor who reference. there’s also a weird amount of parantheses.
(credit to @sip-of-depresso for having the conversation with me which sparked this theory)

A Court of Dragons and Fallen Angels (NobuKichou Demon AU)
Tagging @ashavazesa not sure if you’re gonna like it, buttt think of it as thanks for your wonderful NobuKichou ficlet
Pairing: Nobunaga x Kichou, Mitsuhide x Reader
Length: 1,188 words
Warning: slight gore and sexual situations
Prompt: Demon AU based on Onimusha: Warlords
Tumblr media
It was another unsuccessful raid on Azuchi Castle. True to Mitsuhide's words, Nobunaga needn't don his armor and greet the invaders himself. The Oni warriors were swiftly massacred the moment they set foot on the other side of the wall.
His demonic vassals had outdone themselves once again. Tonight, another celebratory feast was in order.
Nobunaga sipped his rice wine leisurely as he enjoyed the night breeze.
At his side sat Azuchi's chatelaine, anxiously awaiting the return of her beloved.
"No need to fret," Nobunaga assured her. "Don't you remember how effortlessly he crushes Oni like bugs under his soles? He will return soon."
The seamstress shuddered at the image of Mitsuhide blowing the enemies' heads with his trusty rifle. Flesh-colored veins from his hand tangled along the barrel like a web of viscera.
"It's not that. I just find this all to be so...surreal, detached from my own reality," The princess whispered. "Even now, I still can't wrap my head around demon people killing each other with supernatural powers."
Nobunaga laughed.
"Monstrous, am I right?" He scratched at his muscular arm. "Don't worry, you'll get used to it. Soon, the history of this nation will change under the rule of my infernal army. Your future will change."
The expanse of his skin that transformed into adamantine scales would itch at certain times. But it mattered little to Nobunaga. He needed the protection it provided from flames and bullets. Now almost invincible, Nobunaga and his retainers were free to invade lads under Uesugi and Takeda's banners.
Not even resurrected warlords could stall his thirst for conquest.
"Look," Nobunaga pointed at the grounds below. "They're coming."
But his chatelaine didn't have his enchanted senses and thus could not make out the features of the returning men. Yet she only had to look at her lord's fond gaze.
"I heard Kichou was leading the party," she nodded. "I thought he would be exhausted from all our recent battles. That demon strength really is something."
Nobunaga licked his lips at the thought of Kichou gunning and slicing through hordes of Oni and men alike. He would always bring the barrel to his lips before firing, like a prayer so that he'd never miss his mark.
The shot was dedicated to Nobunaga, along with the unfortunate soul it reaped.
Ironically (then and even now to a certain extent), it wasn't the killing that fulfilled Nobunaga. Kichou did.
It's a shame Nobunaga couldn't declare them as lovers. Two hearts made of ice weren't meant to warm each other.
But Kichou fell in love with his vision. Nobunaga loved his devotion and unyielding trust. Even when he told Kichou that he was willing to call upon the powers of hell if need be.
To which Nobunaga literally did.
There was a flicker of uncertainty in Kichou's eyes after Nobunaga showed him the books and spoke of his plans in great detail. For the first time in their long life together, Nobunaga feared that the other man would finally leave him for their adversaries in disgust.
But it didn't take long before Kichou appeared at the entrance to the tenshu. In the dim light, the smaller man reached for Nobunaga's hand, declaring his readiness to sacrifice his very own humanity.
Nobunaga smirked wryly. Then again, they had already stopped being human some time ago. Even though the princess believed otherwise.
Soon, she'd learn that their entire entourage (including her serpent) had long traded their human souls for the sake of Nobunaga's vision.
They sealed their fates as asuras the moment they pledged loyalty to Nobunaga. It was a foregone conclusion that they chose infernal powers over the promise of nirvana.
Evil, the senile monk at Honganji had accused. But Nobunaga could care less about being the villain in everybody else's story. It was all about the ending they'd all eventually meet.
Nobunaga rose. It was time to go welcome his warlords.
"Come," he offered his hand to the young woman. "Let's meet your “boyfriend.”
_______________________________________________________________
The warlords were still high on the thrill of bloodshed when Nobunaga called them to the meeting room.
Nobunaga was delighted at the fevered look in Hideyoshi's eyes as he babbled at their exploits. Kichou paid no heed to him speaking out of turn. He only answered to Nobunaga, and only when prompted.
Was his poor warlord fatigued? These consecutive series of attacks had taken a heavy toll on his sleeping schedule. Nobunaga chuckled at his gormless expression. Demon warriors were supposed to liven up at the prospect of bloodletting.
The constant need for violence was now running through their veins, no matter how righteous they believed themselves to be in the beginning. Just look at Hideyoshi.
"Excellent," Nobunaga concluded their assembly. "Now, go and let yourself indulge for tonight. But remember that we still have much to do in the morning."
The warlords left their seats after bowing to Nobunaga, leaving Mitsuhide and Kichou with Nobunaga and the chatelaine. She rose and immediately went to the silver-haired man's side.
"My little mouse," Mitsuhide stroke her head. "Have you been waiting long?"
The tired man beside them eyed the couple impassively. His old self would have sneered at the lover's audacious display. But not this Kichou, who patiently listened to the chatelaine chattering about his impish cousin with adoration in her eyes.
The more monstrous we become, Kichou muttered one night, the more we appreciate these little moments that remind us we still haven't changed.
Even for all his cruelty, Kichou was still very much a sentimental man, Nobunaga mused.
After what felt like eons, the couple finally bid good night and left Nobunaga alone with Kichou. About time. He wasted no time making use of his privacy with his green-eyed companion.
Nobunaga drew Kichou to his chest, grimy armor and all.
"Nobunaga-sama, please," He pleaded weakly, hands kneading at the fabric of his kimono. "I'm all covered in blood."
"Hmmm, does it matter?" Nobunaga chuckled. "You won't be needing all that bloodied garment on you once we're upstairs."
But Nobunaga understood the exhaustion in his voice. He will wait until morning, then, when Kichou was refreshed and awake to savor his ministrations.
Nobunaga enjoyed their couplings as a demon should: for pleasure and nothing more. But to Kichou, the steady rush of emotions between every touch of their skin was his last remaining tether to his withering humanity.
Nobunaga, already ruthless before his transformation, could barely comprehend the usefulness of keeping another fragile being close to his heart. The era they were living in nearly led him to believe every living soul was disposable, even his own. It was ironic that he only understood Kichou's sentiments now when they had literally been turned into monsters.
Kichou didn't protest when Nobunaga hauled him to his feet and looped his arm behind the Demon King's neck. A sturdy hand rested at Kichou's slender waist, pulling him closer to Nobunaga's side.
Kichou was allowed to clean up and rest in his master's suite, where he belonged. When he woke up, Nobunaga would ensure his right-hand-man was handsomely rewarded for his efforts.

Notes: the “demons” are actually referred to by the franchise as Genma. The Oni (sometimes usually translated to “demons”) as well are their equally supernaturally enhanced counterparts, but good.

Leech Lord AU - Char Breakdown
Seifa A’rosk / Seifa Ur-Machina / Saint of the God King’s Mechanica
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Bless u @nikyri-art and @lazulizard for the art! List of character traits and world-building facets for this character within my story. The Leech Lord Au is the one all other twins content I’ve written is set in.
Troy’s is HERE Tyreen’s is HERE
Note, ye asked and ye received. Literally my first OC ever, no clue what I’m doing, constructive feedback is 100% welcome.
Physical Details:
Right handed.
Very short, 4′11″, and rarely seen out of heeled boots.
5 years older than the twins, in her mid twenties when she came across the scabby looking rat who introduced herself as Tyreen.
Long auburn hair she usually wears in waves.
Right side shave, warm blue eyes, septum/eyebrow/labret facial piercings
Average bodyweight, hourglass shape.
Saint sigil tattoo between her shoulderblades.
Couple of small scars across torso, stab wound near navel, nicks across left ribs.
Visible facial scar is paper thin and streaks across her right brow into her hairline. Tells everyone this was from a knife fight, but was actually from an echodevice she was trying to scavenge components from blowing in her face a decade ago. Figures she might as well try and get some intimidation points out of it.
Relaxed punk aesthetic she carries into her engineering uniform.
Usually covered in homemade jewelry.
Backstory:
Sei is a migrant junker/mechanic, and has been running a solo career as one since her late teens.
She has no memory of family, and doesn't care in the slightest. Figures she was probably sold into child labor before she was old enough to remember who they were. Loses no sleep over this and rarely gives it any thought.
Grew up traveling with her "Boss" (head of the scavenging ring who managed herself and the other skinny little kids she was raised with) between different rim planets including Pandora, scrapping and repairing tech while scavenging the thousands of ship husks dumped during the corporate wars.
Spent her formative years constantly surrounded by other children and teens who helped each other get each other through what should have been a relatively lonely existence, and developed a close family bond with many.
Retained contact with a lot of them in adulthood. They operate a network of mechanics and engineers across the system, a few of which come to work within the COV Mechanica when they realise she can offer safety.
Spent her childhood and teens learning the art of the deal from her boss, accompanying him on trade runs, market dealings, debt collections, anything and everything he figured would help her in the long term. Learned everything she could while accompanying him as a kid, like a filthy little sponge in too-big overalls and a runny nose.
Engineering and mech skills have been honed from years of pulling apart and crawling into junked ships, repairing and reselling on components for profit.
At 19, she had saved enough to purchase a shitty little rehashed transport ship from her Boss, and set out to start her own trade. They've kept in touch and are on friendly grounds. Still calls him Boss. Never actually learned his name, it didn’t matter.
Seifa spends years migrating between outer planets, building a reputation with her bartering and trade skills. Playing idiot traders like instruments, flirting her way into high profit deals, and starting bar fights. She doesn’t take part in them mind you, she’s a lady. She just starts them.
It’s an easy way to get a group of “eager investors” to weed out the lesser competition, and leave you able to playfully manipulate yourself into the good graces of someone who’s too horny and pumped up on the hormonal rush of the fight to realise that they are the mark.
Moves to the next planet once she's outstayed her welcome, but always makes more friends than enemies.
At 25, finds a terrified and not remotely intimidating girl in a Pandoran junkyard, who pulls a gun on her. Tyreen tries to mug her with a shitty SMG that's clearly out of ammo, has a jammed trigger, and gets laughed at in response. Gets called a weird, stupid kid. Gets interrogated about how she is too old to be on Pandora and still alive if this is how clueless she is, so what’s going on?
Ty breaks down into tears and begs to please, please get her some medicine. Her "Brother is so sick” and he's “all she has now”, and they've “no money, no supplies. It wasn’t meant to go like this, it shouldn’t have gone like this but they didn’t know what it would be like.." and in a rare moment of empathy likely routed in years of being around kids this stupid, and clueless, and dumb ... Seifa helps.
Traits: ✓ Positive x Negative:
✓ Confident, both in her appearance and knowledge.
Sei is a jack of all trades, master of none. Her range of knowledge is broad and useful, and her confidence stems both from her well maintained physical appearance, and general competency in most situations where she needs to be.
✓  Socially skilled, fast learner, adaptable.
She’s been learning on her feet as long as she can remember, and is highly socially skilled, though a lot of her “nice” interactions can be a veneer. She holds people at arms length without them realising she’s not being as open and friendly as she appears.
✓  Self sufficient, reliable, trustworthy.
An adult lifetime of needing to rely solely on herself has left her highly sufficient, and very dependable. Seifa is the kind of person you call when you need something done, and don’t need to ask questions about how she gets you your results. You’ll get what you need.. just don’t hassle her about how she achieved it. You’ll be told to piss off, very clearly.
✓  Excellent negotiator, skilled in controlling conversations and manipulating others from years of trading for a living.
Seifa has been learning how to argue, shift conversations towards her own goals, and turn competitors on each other since she was barely able to carry a wrench. She’s an excellent dealer, and can drop into one of her many characters instantly when they’d help shift a contract towards her gain. Floozy giggling newcomer? Got it. Clueless naive big spender? No problem. Trade baroness about to crush your knuckles? Game on.
It’s something the twin strays she rescues are very interested in learning from her.
✓  Naturally friendly, and deeply caring for those she bonds with.
Sei is generally easy to get on with, between her decent set of social skills and ability to quickly read people, she comes across as quite friendly and overall pleasant to most people. She’s very slow to become genuine around others or show her caring side, an understandable side effect of the kind of life she’s lived, but her close friends are very close, and see her as one for life.
✓  Lawful Neutral.
Morals are decent ( for a Pandoran) , and is always willing to help someone if it's not too much hassle or won’t put her out. Like the majority of people living on this rock however, she won’t put strangers before her own safety or wellbeing.
x  Very vain.
Sei will sacrifice functionality for style in the Mechanicum without a second thought, and will become frustrated and snappy if unhappy with her appearance and forced into social situations. She’s had a lifetime of curating her looks and using them as a tool, and hates being seen “out of character”.
x Self focused.
She won’t risk harm physically or to her reputation for someone she has no stake in. Fact of life on Pandora is that people who do that don't tend to live very long, and she’s highly aware of that. Close friends and children are about it when it comes to who she’d take a risk for, and bandits slaughtering each other or ransacking towns is unlikely to be something she’d be very phased by. It’s not that she doesn’t care, she just doesn’t allow herself to.
x Irritable, easily brought to frustration or insulted. Holds grudges badly.
Seifa manages her collected and cool outer demeanor by pushing it over her emotional state. It’s a defense mechanism she’s learned from a lifetime of being in situations where emotion = weakness. Her high personal opinion of herself and pride in her skill means she takes to being insulted very easily. A subordinate who doesn’t show her respect won’t stay in her department long, and an equal who treats her like an underling? She will Never. Let. It. Go.
x Snappy and unpleasant when stressed or overworked, unable to handle emotion based arguments.
Seifa’s response to stress or frustration is to become overwhelmingly in control of the situation, and fiercely logical. Her social niceness evaporates and she defaults to the simple level of “Get this shit done NOW, and don’t question me” when it comes to dolling out required tasks. This is a bad thing to couple with arrogance. She is also completely incapable of arguing with someone who uses emotion instead of logic as their drive, and so while she is able to communicate with Troy very well even in heated times as they both default to logic, arguments between herself and Tyreen can become vicious, as neither is capable of expressing themselves in the other’s language when frustrated.
x Loyalty to close friends can overpower her better judgement in situations.
She’s completely aware of the hypocrisy of this weakness considering the front she likes to portray, being cold and unaffected by problems, but has never been able to stop herself from making this same mistake. Over and over.
x Noticeably arrogant, no respect for the chain of command.
Relying on her gut for survival through her life left her with an inflated sense of worth for her own opinion, and she finds it very hard to really convince herself that others may be the better option, or have more value than her own. This means she can also easily forget her place if she thinks a superior is in the wrong. Has earned her a stab to the abdomen and a broken wrist in the past. Both healed, both scarred. Her arrogance towards the twins, being that they are younger and far less experienced than her in general life, has caused multiple confrontation. She know’s it’s a problem, and she’s trying to get better. She really is.

I’m so angry that tumblr put my read more WITHIN THE ASK ITSELF so I’m copying the whole post since I worked hard on it:
Ask from @ blue-electric-angel
Hi Dath! Would you feel up to rant about the trolley problem? I've never liked it but I don't know WHY or at least can't articulate it, so I would be interested in hearing another person's thoughts 🤔 But it's okay if you don't want to!!
OKAY TWO DISCLAIMERS
a) I was reminded that I should clarify my dislike of the trolley problem bc of @callmearcturus talking about its issues, so can’t take full credit here!
b) I am not a philosophy expert and find ethical thought games only useful in how they apply to the real world, and find worth in ethical discussions in how they’re applied/affect how people think more than how complex/challenging they are.
THIRD DISCLAIMER I’m very sleepy and pretty sure I have surpassed my words quota of the week so this may be a bit disjointed!!
Some background on my ire:  I’m a CPA.  Which means majoring in business.  Which means being around business majors.  Which means BUSINESS ETHICS CLASSES.  My eyes start to water every time I think about how many American Dream dudebros tried to apply the trolley problem as a flimsy excuse to devalue those they thought were reasonable sacrifices for their own greater good.  Is it worth testing weapons on your own population, if you can then use those weapons to end a war faster?  Should we get rid of regulations about medical tests on people, if it would result in life-saving medicine being produced faster?  And so on.  Rules, protections, and just anything that would require giving another human being agency are treated like nuisances in the way of Great Minds moving and shaping the world as they see fit.
I went and did a search to see if anyone already put my thoughts about the trolley problem into words, and the article The Trolley Problem Will Tell you Nothing Useful About Morality sums it up right from the get-go:
It discourages us from examining the structural factors that determine our choices.
[cut for length]
One thing that drove me BATSHIT about philosophy classes is I was never allowed to bring historical or social context into any of the discussions.  I couldn’t challenge Aristotle’s view of women as ranking somewhere near livestock, because if I couldn’t word puzzle my way into a truth, nonsense like “disenfranchisement of women in Ancient Greece” and “self-perpetuating social structures enforcing class and gender divides” didn’t belong in my discussions, apparently!
Which, needless to say, is a huge issue when you start getting into topics of “who should we sacrifice for the greater good” as applied to political policy.  I don’t even need to elaborate on this one.  It’s always those whose lives are valued less and who have less power in that society.  The “greater good” is intensely subjective, and will always include the well-being of the person making the choice.
The trolley problem works from a long list of assumptions that will rarely reflect reality, and shortcut past the most important discussions to be had:
- The person behind the switch has the sole power or responsibility for making the choice.  They don’t have the chance to communicate, they don’t have the chance to get input from the people in danger.
- The person behind the switch is the only one with agency, and the only one who CAN have agency.
- The safety of the person behind the switch is assumed.  No possible choice could involve them being in danger.
- There’s a time limit that allows nothing more than an impulse decision.
- There’s no examination of why there is only one person with power over the situation, or why those at risk are 100% powerless to leave their situation
- There’s no chance of examining why the trolley is rolling down the tracks in the first place
That last one is where my rage comes from about the misapplication of this thought game re: insisting philosophy must be ahistorical.  But the thing that especially gets under my skin is how the agency of other human beings is just completely taken off the table.  A non-issue.  Something we have to assume wouldn’t make a difference, something we should assume isn’t possible to begin with.
[Stop reading here if you’re avoiding The Magnus Archives spoilers to episode 101]
Since this came up in a TMA context, I’ll veer it over to TMA: I see it get brought up in the context of Gertrude sacrificing Michael to save the world.  But this dehumanizes Michael as a person who could have been given agency and information, when in fact we know he was kept ignorant so that he could be more easily manipulated.  It places Gertrude behind the switch with no other options other than to pull a lever one way or another.  But therein lies the issue with the application of this experiment to “real life” scenarios.  Where is talking to Michael instead of betraying him?  Where is letting him make a choice of his own?  We learn later that his sacrifice wasn’t even necessary, but with the limited information Gertrude had at the time, how much were other options (LIKE GOOD OL C4) explored before she decided to ruin the life of someone who trusted her?  Why does she get to ensure her own safety behind the switch, rather than considering herself in the trade of “one life to save the world”?
TMA 155 - Cost of Living is a fantastic deconstruction of how rich and privileged people try to apply the trolley problem to excuse their choices and their abuse of others.  The statement giver rationalizes murdering dozens of people to fuel her own life, excusing it with “but I can do so much good if I’m alive!”  Meanwhile we’re left horrified that she clearly finds those she postures as being so helpful towards as expendable and “less valuable to society,” such as homeless people and the elderly.  We’re left side-eying the idea that a rich person giving to charity while living comfortably as being an indisputable “greater good” when all that’s really happening is one person valuing her own life over the lives of so many others.  The statement giver insists the net gain of the world excuses her actions, and tries to narrow the choice down to those two tracks:  Don’t pull the switch and lose “all the good she could do,” pull the switch and lose just a handful of people.  Listening, we know that the only person on the other track is her, and that her rationalization only enables her to kill again and again.
And that is why I hate the trolley problem.
