School was...well, it was interesting.  Ingo and Emmet's parents had decided that the two of them should join public schooling rather than homeschooling, to force them to interact more with their peers.  Ingo and Emmet had protested, (Ingo quite loudly at that, but Emmet no less fervently), but their parents had been adamant.  Neither of them had been looking forward to being stuck in a small room with the few other kids from town, who already thought they were weird and off-putting.

Then their parents had informed them that they weren't going to be attending the local school, but instead the larger school in Nimbasa.  Which they would get to by train.

After that, Ingo and Emmet had been beside themselves, impatient to start the school year.  If all of their enthusiasm was in planning for the travel itself, at least they were no longer protesting, their parents reasoned.

The thing was, school was there both to prepare young trainers for the journey they would begin in a few years, as well as to broaden their horizons to other professions and interests outside of pokemon battling.  Most youths paid little attention to the latter, despite the probability that most of them would end up in a more menial job than champion or gym leader.  Others, like Ingo and Emmet, had passions alongside of their pokemon obsession.  Fewer still imagined a future where both combined.

Then there were the more practical lessons.  Like Home Ec. Which brought Ingo to where he was now.

The girl—Ingo thought her name was Greta—looked at him with hopeful eyes, a small bundle held in front of her in offering.  In the little bundle of cloth, some lopsided cookies lay.  

"Would you please accept my cookies?" she asked, voice trembling slightly.  Her friends shoved at each other behind her, obviously there as moral support. Ingo wished he had moral support right now too, but Emmet had stayed behind to talk with the teacher, and Ingo had offered to head to their lockers and gather what they needed to head home.

"I..." he looked around, hopeful for any distraction, but there were none to be had.  In fact, their little gathering was quickly becoming the center of attention for the other teens passing by, some loitering to gawk.  He ducked his head down, wishing again for Emmet's steady presence at his side.  "Of course," he said helplessly, not knowing what else to do, not being able to force more than that out of his mouth.  "Thank you," he added, because it was polite.

She beamed when he took one of the cookies, then continued to stare at him expectantly.  Oh dear.  She expected him to eat it now?  Feeling entirely self conscious, he popped the cookie in his mouth.  He did have to admit they tasted pretty good.  Maybe not something he'd pick for himself, but…

She kept staring at him, and as his nerves grew, he realized the moment he'd made a grave mistake.

He couldn't move his jaw, teeth clenching tight around the sweet morsel, throat rebelling against the mere thought of swallowing.  The cookies were quickly going from "doesn't taste terrible" to the mushiest texture imaginable, and Ingo knew he was in trouble.  His eyes started to water a bit as he tried to force himself to swallow, desperate to not insult the still hopefully staring girl.  It was such a small thing!  Why could he not do it?  Just swallow, compliment her, then he'd be free to leave.  

Somehow he managed to start swallowing.  Then his eyes widened and he dove for a nearby trashcan, coughing and retching as the soggy mess dripped into the plastic container.  He heard a few disgusted cries from the group of girls, but he couldn't see through the tears in his eyes, couldn't get his hands to unclench from the sides of the garbage as he gasped in short breaths.  

A moment later a warm, familiar hand was on his back, and a water bottle was dangled in front of him, already uncapped.  Emmet's voice rang out above him, though for the life of him Ingo couldn't make out what he was saying.  Knowing Emmet, it was something decidedly blunt and rude.  Ingo would have to apologize properly for both of them later.  Now, he raised a shaking hand to grab the water bottle, straightening up enough that he could tip it against his mouth and take a small sip.  

The cool water was a balm to the burning inside of his mouth and throat.  He was grateful he hadn't thrown up more than the little bit of the cookie he'd eaten.  It wasn't the first time it had happened, nor would it be the last, but it was distressing and embarrassing.  

"Ingo?"  Emmet's voice broke through the throbbing in Ingo's head, and he pulled himself away from the trash can.  The hallway was mostly empty, the group of girls nowhere to be seen.

"That was...quite rude of me," Ingo said, wiping his mouth with the back of his hand.  

"Ingo," Emmet said again, though his tone had turned disapproving.  "Stop that.  It is not your fault!  Besides, she shouldn't have done it in front of everyone.  I know you.  You would not say no.  She knows too."

"Still," Ingo said, sighing.  He leaned he head against Emmet's shoulder, humming when Emmet immediately embraced him, hands rubbing soothingly on his back.  After a moment, he muttered, "I hate this."

"I am Emmet.  I know."

"I don't know why it happens.  There is no reason.  It doesn't taste bad!  So why—"

"Ingo," Emmet cut him off, pushing him back by his shoulders so he could shake him.  "It does not matter why.  Do you ask why I do not like Pecha?  Do you ask why you do?  It is just something that Ingo is."

Ingo grimaced sullenly, but did have to concede the point.  Emmet had many textures he refused to eat, most of which Ingo could understand.  There was no reason to feel his own issue was any different.  He just wished he could predict when it would occur. Sure, it was more likely to happen when he was nervous, but it was not always.  And sometimes it was when he was eating his favorite food!  Ridiculous.

"Is your engine sufficiently settled?" Emmet asked, still holding Ingo by his shoulders as he turned him from side to side.  Ingo allowed it, arms swaying limply with the motion.

"Yes.  Overdue for departure."  Ingo was very ready to head home.  "Oh, but I failed to retrieve our books from the lockers.  We should head there post haste."

"Hmmm."  Emmet gave him a considering look.  Ingo hated it when people acted as if he were fragile after one of his episodes, and Emmet knew it.  So instead of arguing, his twin merely nodded.  "One detour.  Then full steam ahead for home station."  He slid one hand down to tangle with Ingo's, squeezing gently.  Ingo appreciated the anchor, and squeezed back.

(Ingo did manage to apologize to Greta, Emmet all but attached at his hip in support.  While she understood it hadn't been anything against her, it became well-known not to offer either of the twins food after that.  It was a reputation Ingo could live with.)

Even if a creator is a bad person it's still okay to like their work. People need to mind their own business.

Honestly it's not really that sort of situation. I'll actively defend Steven Moffat here.

There was a huge hate movement for him back in the early 2010s - which, in retrospect, formed largely because he was running 2 of the superwholock shows at once, one of which went through extremely long hiatuses* and the other of which was functionally an adaptation of an already well regarded show**, making him subject to a sort of double ire in the eyes of a lot of fandom people. Notably, his co-showrunner, Mark Gatiss, is rarely mentioned and much of his work is still attributed to Moffat (and yes, this includes that Hbomberguy video. Several of "Steven Moffat's bad writing choices" were not actually written by him, they were Gatiss.)

People caricatured the dude into a sort of malicious, arrogant figure who hated women and was deliberately mismanaging these shows to spite fans, to the point where people who never watched them believe this via cultural osmosis. It became very common to take quotes from him out of context to make them look bad***, to cite him as an example of a showrunner who hated his fans, someone who sabotaged his own work just to get at said fans, someone who was too arrogant to take criticism, despite all of this being basically a collective "headcanon" formed on tumblr. Some if it got especially terrible, like lying about sexual assault (I don't mean people accused him of sexual assault and I think they're making it up, I mean people would say things like "many of his actresses have accused him of sexual assault on set" when no such accusations exist in the first place. This gets passed around en masse and is, in my opinion, absolutely rancid.)

On top of that a ton of the criticism directed at the shows themselves is, personally, just terrible media criticism. So much of it came from assuming a very hostile intent from the writer and just refusing to engage with the text at all past that.

Like some really common threads you see with critique of this writer's work, especially in regards to Doctor Who since that's the one I'm most familiar with:

A general belief that his lead characters were meant to be ever perfect self inserts, and so therefore when they act shitty or arrogant or flawed in any way, that's both reflective of the author and meant to be viewed as positive or aspirational.

An overarching thesis that his characters are "too important" in the narrative due to the writer's arrogance and self obsession

A lot of focus on the writer personally "attacking" the fans or making choices primarily out of spite.

A tendency to treat the show being different to what it's adapting as inherently bad and hostile towards the original

Just generally very little consideration of the themes, intent, etc.

This one's a little more nebulous and doesn't apply to all critique but a lot of it, especially recently, is clearly by people who haven't seen the show in like 10 years and their opinion is largely formed secondhand through like, "discourse nostalgia". Which. you know. bad.

I think these are just weird and nonsensical ways to engage with a work of fiction. I also think it's really sad to see the show boiled down to this because that era of who is, in my opinion, very thematically rich and unique among similar shows, and I hate that it's often dismissed in such a paltry way.

This isn't to say people aren't allowed to critique Steven Moffat or anything, but the context in which he basically became The Devil™ to a large portion of fandom and is still remembered in a poor light is very tied to this perfect storm of fan culture and I just don't agree with a ton of it.

* I'm sure most people have seen the way long running shows and hiatuses will cause people to fall out with a show, with some former fans turning around and joining a sort of "anti fandom" for it while it's still airing. That happened with both these shows. ** Doctor Who will change it's entire writing staff, crew, and cast every few years, and with that comes a change in style, tone, theme - the old show basically ends and is replaced by a new show under the same title. As Steven Moffat's era was the first of these handovers for the majority of audiences, you can imagine this wasn't a well loved move for many fans. *** I know for a fact most people have not sought out the sources for a lot of these quotes to check that they read the same in context because 1) most of them were deleted years ago and are very difficult to find now and 2) many of them do actually make sense in the context of their respective interviews

#and yeah i think the hbomberguy video is kind of bad #I can pull up examples but a lot of what he's saying is very rooted in this sort of critique #maybe most egregiously he sometimes just explains something very poorly or outright incorrectly to make it seem worse or more nonsensical #ex. saying a scene in doctor who 'steals a huge chunk of the plot' when it's less than 30 seconds long #saying two characters randomly start hanging out again while not mentioning the episode entirely dedicated to this #or the way her decision to keep hanging out with him is the emotional turning point of the entire season #etc etc etc.

So let me get this straight. TOTK!Rauru had repeatedly requested that the Gerudo join the ‘protective embrace’ of his kingdom, to serve him. Protection from whom? The monster clans? If anything, the Gerudo seem at the peak of their power! They have some measure of control over the molduga, the fiercest of the desert’s monsters. It’s also established elsewhere that the Secret Stones merely amplify one’s existing power—that one would catapult Ganon to near-unstoppable heights speaks of his already formidable might. With him at the helm, the Gerudo were ready and willing to invade Hyrule. Until Rauru demonstrated a superweapon that quite literally vaporized any notion of a military assault—a superweapon that Rauru (and his cohort) brazenly wears. Ganon is entreating a party wearing nuclear launch codes around their necks! And those aren’t even the only Secret Stones in Rauru’s possession, later handing those out as he sees fit to the Sages. Of course, the narrative portrays Rauru as someone who would never abuse that kind of power—he’s a Good King. But that’s a terrifying Sword of Damocles.

Also I'd like to point out that apparently, Rauru's "sin", and what passes off as his character arc (so far, I haven't finished the whole game yet), is that he was too confident that he'd keep Ganondorf under control as a vassal? Like, okay what were the options otherwise? What should he have done that he didn't do? Like in OoT/TP beforehand: was Rauru supposed to simply imprison the king of a foreign nation just because he didn't pass the vibe check --or worse, kill him off? And then what happens to the gerudo? I feel like we've gone down this road before, and it didn't lead anywhere pretty...

This is what I mean about the poor character writing in this game: I think Rauru is supposed to be the emotional core of the story, and he might be the only one with an "arc" so far, but his flaw/regret is... a whole bunch of nothing? Unless you think he should have commited genocide to protect his kingdom from evil, according to the game that refuses to examine his actions/power, there's nothing he should have done differently besides... not having his wife be murdered? That's not a character arc, that's just an unfortunate event you participated in unwillingly!! To make a comparaison that is worth being brought up: the king of Hyrule in BotW worked much better in that regard, because he is indeed partially responsible for the fall of his kingdom through the pressure he inflicted upon his daughter and the prideful belief that he could control a force of nature (Calamity Ganon being treated as such in that game) through technology; both of these attitudes costing him everything, condemning his daughter to a century-long fight and said technology ruling the lands through terror in his stead. As a ghost, he haunts the wreckage waiting for the hero to wake up to try and finally correct his mistakes through Link.

I think they kind of wanted to do that again in TotK, but it extremely doesn't land in my opinion because Rauru has no flaw --beyond, apparently, not being bigoted enough?

I hope everyone is as good as they can be given the times. I truly believe art as therapy is the future of personal medication. Both in creation and experience. I've been trying to read more poetry lately as I've fallen into the habit of only reading non fiction. I'm not setting a 'goal' by any means but I am hoping to sink my teeth into more good stuff this year.

Okay so now that I'm a good way through the series (just got to thiller bark) and I want to sort out my feelings on Nami.

So I really do like Nami, but the way she's sexualized is really starting to get on my nerves and is preventing me from really loving her.

I love how pragmatic she is, how she's often the one solving things out, and how important she is to the crew as the navigator. But there are so many scenes of Nami's body being objectified that make her stop feeling like a character sometimes. And that really sucks.

I just read the scene in thriller bark where she's fucking assaulted in the bath, and that scene is quickly used as a peeping joke. Which was actually upsetting to read. And that scene really kind of got to what had been bothering me about Nami up to that point: sometimes, she's treated very differently by Oda, and by extension the men of the crew, because she's an attractive woman.

And listen I did two tours in the naruto fandom, I am not about to start blaming Nami for this. But it does really get in the way of me really loving her cus it feels like sometimes she stops being a character so the men and the audience can oogle at her.

Does anyone else feel this way? Does it get better? I feel really torn because I do want to love Nami, but her over-sexualization makes me really uncomfortable.

i was looking back at my old knitting posts to check on a thing and like yeah i really did just rocket right up the knitting skill tree over the course of a few months. no wonder i'm convinced i can knit literally anything i've spent ten minutes reading and watching videos about.

my personal knitting trajectory is that i learned to knit at age 8, stopped knitting at age 16 or so, and did not knit anything more complex than circular knit legwarmers with mild shaping at that time (so i could make rectangles and tubes and slightly widen the tubes). (ok i also did one lace scarf for about four inches but it was very bad.) then i got back into it at the end of college, and my projects were lace cowl > multiple stranded colorwork hats > socks on dpns > elaborately cabled sweater (which i finished only the back and half a sleeve of, admittedly, and am now picking up again) > most of a beaded lace crescent shawl in the span of, like, five months. and then a bunch of other shit after that! i literally can just learn to knit whatever the fuck i want, that's just uncontroversially true. what a fantastic hobby

the premise of orv swap au (name has yet to be finalized) is this: what if kdj and yjh swapped narrative positions (reader <-> character) but very little else? what if a video game player enters a time loop to save his favorite character from dying over and over again and also to end the apocalypse?

admittedly it's not super fleshed out yet (a lot of the changes this premise would introduce are still not hammered out yet) but here are some points under the cut (novel spoilers ahead!)

orv swap au starts with pro gamer yjh who feels :/ abt his job, but hey, it pays the bills. despite (or maybe because of) his relative popularity as a pro gamer and networking with the agency/sponsors/people to impress, he's kind of isolated in a way that's detrimental, a facade of someone he's not whenever he's on camera

something to play around with is the idea of agency? maybe this yjh doesn't feel like he has any and has his hands tied between the lifestyle and being under public scrutiny and not having enough of a support system to leave everything behind. maybe he doesn't know what else he would even do. maybe he's aimless and drifting with nothing to hold on to.

his favorite video game is what i've been thinking of as World's Hardest To Play Indie Game (not based on difficulty but just on the experience of consuming it) a boring, exposition heavy, player-hostile, poorly designed, slightly buggy mess of a barely-playable game: twsa, a game that was not finished upon release and experiences with sporadic updates every now and then.

the ending tree to this game is so convoluted its insane. also theres no save states so if you die (very likely) u restart babeyyy.

twsa (video game) does have multiple endings, all of which happen when kdj, your main character, dies. some are farther into the apocolypse than others, some paths require meta knowledge of future events or character actions or items or whatever. the "true ending" is either analogous to the original 1863: kdj makes it to the end at the cost of everyone he loves, or hsy's modified 1863: kdj makes himself enemy of the scenario to secure a way out for the kimcom remnants.

there's branches on the choices tree where everyone dies and everything sucks and is bad forever and theres choices to make where kdj gets to make a family and they don't really get to settle down but they can get pretty close to it among the ruins of the apocalypse. through all his testing, yjh finds that these endings are nice but peter out - to get to the end of the apocalypse yjh has to claw his way there inch by painful inch, through betrayal and sacrifice, and he still cant fully get past it

i originally wanted to finagle a yoohankim 3 way swap but i couldn't figure it out. swap aus are a lot easier to work with when they're even numbers, at least to me, so this au features a ysa who is a video game company employee by day and by night she really has become god this time (and also a terrible indie dev). and this is how jungdoksang can still win !!!!

also yjh's coworker from Real Life hsy :) i haven't decided if she's like an employee for the same agency, or if she's someone else in the gaming circles that yjh interacts with sometimes (in my heart theyre in like some sort of discord server together), or something like that but she's around. whatever she does she is twitter cancelled for something. to me.

the only other character swaps are lsk and yma. yma is yjh's estranged sister (in broad strokes there's a vague bad parent situation going on here) (they used to be close until they drifted apart and slowly started hating each other [there is an abyss between them that neither of them can bridge]) (he feels that she betrayed him and threw him under the bus so he left [maybe he gets kicked out]) (she feels that he abandoned her to whatever situation they have going on [he didn't even try to take her with him]) and he has to find her when the apocalypse starts. yjh older sibling to yma gives us a whole different little dynamic to explore from kdj ysk (there's different levels of responsibility and guilt and blame when you're talking siblings that are soooooo interesting to me. sorry that i see any set of siblings and immediately try to figure out how to make them worse)

lsk is kdj's mom who appeared into existence at some point with kdj and they were both just adults. that's weird isn't it. oh well. i guess she can become a transcendent later too for funsies

everyone else stays in the same configuration of Real Person vs Character to me this is a very important aspect

this point has no precedent with the swap, nothing particular that would change to cause this, but it would be so funny if lgy was a little gamer boy who is an avid yjh hater. hates that guy. shows up to competitions to boo him. tunes into yjh's silent no-mic speedrunning streams to mald in chat but yjh +mods don't ban him bc its kinda funny.

anyways the apocalypse starts when yjh and his coworker/fellow gamer hsy are on a train to twitchcon and lgy is also there (also headed to twitchcon) and he brings bugs because he likes them but also to sabotage yjh specifically. its just funny if this happened. you understand

instead of having reader-related skills and abilities, yjh's skills are video game player based! he gets flavor text insight on people, location, and items, things like that. notably, he has the ability to reset, to bring himself back to the beginning of the apocalypse

orv swap proper follows yjh as the Player of the Game (Consumer of the Narrative) who lives hundred of lifetimes in this ruined-world-become-reality "replaying" [read: time looping through] the game to reshape it to save his fave character from self implosion (kdj with no dissociation is very prone to dying. all the time.). to revisit the idea of playing with yjh and the idea of agency, of creation, the only way to get past the apocalypse is to go off the beaten path, to choose options that weren't even there in the game. when in space, at his darkest point, yjh becomes a writer. in this story, at his darkest point, he has to become a creator too

please do not ask me how the epilogues go i dont know how the epilogues go (i don't want to throw yjh back into a train for milennia after he Just went through a thousand resets so i'm sending kdj for that but i havent fully planned how or why)

#i wanted an oc who is just always down to clown and will do some of the silliest things to make you smile #and now i got one 👁️👁️ #for the first time in a while i started creating soley based on vibes so he has no name yet but!! #he’s connected to chiyo :) he was part of the group of kids who bullied her growing up :) #he wasn’t the one putting eggs in her hair but he sure did let it happen #AND I KNOW IT SOUNDS BAD but he was scared and struggling and handled it poorly and then!! grew up and got better!! #he’s a character who definitely just did what he had to to fit in and make it through school bc his sister stood out #and he saw how that went for her at school and with their parents #as adults he and his older sister are very close 💜 but it’s a long road getting to that point #and actually!! i was debating whether i wanted him to be chiyo’s close friend or a coworker who realizes #who she was #bc his experience with her in middle school really impacted him and started his journey of growth #but pls know that he’s a big goofball who just wants to know who he is when there’s no one to copy #in my notes i wrote ‘does he like chocolate or does he like it bc it’s his sister’s favorite?’ and i’m sad :(((( #get ready to ramble | ooc #alright i might actually pass out now asdfgh i’m eepy

not only do i think everyone should have at least one (1) creative hobby of some sort but I also think everyone should have at least one hobby that it's fun to be bad at. yeah yeah being bad at something is the first step towards being good at something and all that but i think there should also be a place for things that you are unabashedly bad at without an end goal of being good at it. rather the end goal should just be having the time of your life doing something with no skill and lots of gusto

Melli in the gear station family au is like that one lovingly overbearing family member who comes to see you at your job and tell you that you're doing a great job, except he needs an excuse to tell Akari & Rei their doing a great job so part of his getting lost is intentional and part of it is genuinely accidental (hc he has an absolutely terrible sense of direction and gets lost in a straight line, Zoro from one piece style) so when they find him and help him he's like "you two are SO GOOD at your jobs, the BEST employees here, honestly" and like half of the ten most recent gear station reviews are from Melli praising Akari and Rei.

Ingo and Emmet ask them if he needs to be banned from the subway and the younger twins are like "no, he's fine. Embarrassing but he means well and it's all good." (They have a hunch that Melli Knows Them which is why the kids are fine with hanging around him and helping him, but also all three of them are so at ease with each other that they had to ask just to Make Sure everything was fine even though they were Pretty Sure there was no issue)

That's why MELLI is ALWAYS so thankful to his hairstylist and doesn't give them shit #Esp when the hairstylist is running late or dealing with some sort of UNEXPECTED PROBLEM that they're WORKING ON FIXING #Obv Melli can wait a lil bit!!! Another mini-arc of Fault is being released. Fault is an SCP SBI AU that deals with themes of dealing with the trauma and guilt of surviving, The SCP Foundation’s system of oppression, and naturally found family. The first arc is Tommy and Tubbo-centric, focusing on the sacrifices needed to survive, and then broadens to fully introduce the rest of the Sleepy Bois, alternative morality systems, and new terrible mental health strategies. While the story does get dark, it makes the moments of love shine all the brighter. Even if humanity hates them, these monsters have each other’s backs.
