some convos have lead me to get emotional about joel farabee so. enjoy. under read more because i may have went a little overboard idk you can judge that

i regularly think about his house, about how he lets (encourages) the young guys to stay with him, how he doesn’t want guys to have to stay at the hotel. how his first thought when he moved in and realized how much space he had was to fill it with teammates. he’s in philly in the offseason to train, and he’s making sure the guys staying with him train as well, but also they’re all having their fun at the same time. he practically adopted foery as his little brother, let’s foery drag him around philly all summer, keeping the kid entertained!!! even when guys aren’t living with him, he encourages them to stay at his place after going out. he cares so much about this team!!!! about his teammates!!! our love for the team does not compare to his love for the team!!

i genuinely think that sometime in the near future he will have a letter, idk if it’s going to be an A or a C (i’m super bias and want to see him with the C in the future) but i know he’s leadership potential. and it’s not just off ice, he’s talented as hell! he wouldn’t have made it to the nhl if he wasn’t good, but i don’t even think it’s me being bias when i say he’s one of our top guys. and he also defends guys on the ice when needed! he’s not one of our main fighters, but he’s gets scrappy when needed, one of those times being in january to defend york.

and he genuinely seems so fun to be around!! and so nice!! when i met him in october, it was like a 2 minute interaction and only a few words were exchanged, but listen he fucking gentle toned me. i almost died. he’s just a silly guy!! he’s just a dude!! and he’s our silly dude!!!!

How do you interpret JJ’s facial expression after the boat convo with Pope? It looks very resigned or disappointed to me, especially as he walks away, but I’m not sure that really fits the context. Does he have trouble believing he can chose things because he wants them maybe? It’s as close to a blessing as he’s likely to get. I wish Pope had revisited this conversation later in the season especially as JJ and Kie obviously didn’t sort their shit out after this.

Okay, so there's a lot of way to interpret this scene, but my take on it is JJ is a little bit at a loss in terms of what to do in that moment. What he needed from Pope was a clear-cut go for it, because that's how he operates. He assesses his friends' needs, and all his choices are an immediate answer to these needs: Kiara is being attacked by the ships captain? JJ will jump on his back to stop him. His friends are about to get arrested? JJ will distract the cops. John B needs to be broken out of prison? JJ will take care of it.

But in that moment, when Pope is just realizing how serious things are becoming between JJ and Kiara, he was never gonna give him a resounding yes. What Pope gave him was room to make a choice for himself. He essentially tells him if it makes you happy, do it.

The problem is, from season 1, JJ has always equated his happiness with that of his friends. It didn't matter if he's going through it, he was willing to do whatever he needed to keep the Pogues happy. All his big choices have revolved around that. But for the first time, any choice he makes will result in one of his friends being hurt, even if it's temporary; if he chooses Kiara, he hurts Pope, and if he doesn't, he hurts Kie.

Plus, Pope is telling him to make a choice for himself - something that will make him happy, and JJ is very much someone who has a hard time making good and healthy choices for himself. It's almost like he considers any choice that does make him feel good as inherently wrong. Even when he goes off the rails and blows all the money on the hot tub, a decision that from the outside can look selfish, his reasoning is the opposite: he does it because he thinks it would make the Pogues happy.

Bottom line, I think he leaves disappointed because he was sorta hoping Pope would give him a firm answer, but instead he tells him to do the thing that he hates the most, which is to put himself first, and put his own happiness above someone else's.

Oh and totally wish they circled back to it, I think it would've been really nice for Pope to approach JJ and ask him how things were going mid-season, when Pope was clearly over Kie and JJ was struggling the most.
