Sandstorm dying solely to further alderheart’s pissbaby manpain made me so upset. alderheart in general just pisses me off… him and tree were both just so blatantly written to steal the arc from their she-cat counterparts lmfao (sparkpelt, sandstorm, needletail, violetshine). that’s it, that’s their purpose… similar to rootspring and nightheart. I just can’t enjoy characters whose purpose narratively is to shove the she-cats to the wayside… it happens so much in this series already

yeah 😔 it's the repetition of the archetype and the context around it that gets me- on his own, alderheart is just "guy i don't really care about", same with rootspring and tree, but the more i sit down and think "hm, why are the male characters in the series written this way and the female characters written this way? why are events ordered in a way that constantly shifts attention and sympathy back towards the male characters?" i start to get mad about lots of little tiny details, which in turn make egregious things like "arc 1 legacy character getting unceremoniously fridged by dying in a ditch somewhere for a pittance of character development her boring grandson while all of her male counterparts get comparatively way more respectful or impactful deaths" even worse somehow.

#it's also so tiring to me that when male characters are boring they are given heaps of fanon that make them sweet and memorable #but when female characters are underwritten that side of the fandom is just like 'yup she's boring! i hate her. ignoring her' #i understand that there are few genuinely well-written male characters to latch onto in the series #but people do it with every single male character regardless anyways so it's not like that even matters #i liked a lot of generic niceboy characters when i first joined the fandom but in hindsight it was all just fanon and a sense of obligation #'yeah of course i have to like alderheart and fernsong! they're good soft boys! crowfeather is a funny pathetic guy!' #nowadays i couldnt care less if alderheart and fernsong etc died in a tragic sudden minecraft creeper explosion offscreen #and im actively manifesting that it happen to crowfeather

The man -- Grian, Tim thinks, though god knows why the poor soul's called that -- fidgets in his ill-fitting red sweater, fingers tangled in unravelling thread. Peers at the crowbar in his hand, perplexed.

Tim thinks that maybe he should be nervous; hell, the last time he'd pissed someone off, it had ended with the explosions, and horrible death, and everything. Still, he thinks, shifting in his stance, it's kind of par for the course, at this point.

(He thinks about the amount he's going to have to spend on therapy after this, mourning his poor credit card, then remembers that he does not, in fact, have his credit card on him. Probably because of the aforementioned 'horrible death and everything.') (Are you even allowed to get therapy when you're dead? Maybe heaven has therapy. Maybe it has some kayaks. Tim doesn't come to an answer.) 

(Grian doesn't look like much of a therapist, anyway.)

He opens his mouth to speak - something scathing and well-thought out, because he's cool and sexy and not losing his calm - when the guy beats him to it. His voice is, somehow, exactly what Tim had expected: "Woah. That's not in minecraft. ...is it?"

Tim blinks. Blinks a couple times, really, as if that'd make any more sense. It doesn't. "What," he says. He's trying for neutral, but honestly at this point he just sounds bewildered. "You've never seen a crowbar before?"

"Nope," Grian says, sounding awfully cheerful about it. (Really, Tim respects a guy who's never seen a crowbar before. He wishes he hadn't, but, y'know. Clowns, and death, and everything.)

(That being said, Tim pulls it off. At least he's got that going for him.)

"Huh." The silence stretches between them. "Weird."

"Weird," red-sweater hums, nodding in polite British agreement. "Learning a lot about Minecraft, actually. Did you know that in version Beta 1.2_01, you used to be able to milk squids?"

Tim has no idea what half of those words mean. He very much does not want to know about the other half. "I'm an alpha," he tells Grian. Grian nods sagely.

The silence stretches onward.

You know it's always a weird feeling but also very satisfying when after not knowing for so long you finally get the answer to a tiny question you've had for years

#okay so let me explain #or more like give an example #when i was like 12 or 13 i was really into german minecraft youtubers #and i watched this one guy specifically a Lot #and he always had a series going on that had a little storyline with some plot every episode #and i think he had some mods that made references to famous shows or movies or something like that #anyways #at some point in a video he was mining as you do in minecraft and there was this random statue of a sad angel that got closer to him #whenever he didn't look at it #and i didn't know what that was but it creeped me the fuck out #(i recently rewatched that series which is why i remember this) #and now #Now i'm watching doctor who #and get to the episode about the weeping angels #and just #something clicks and now it all makes sense #like i really do not know why that was in his minecraft episode the series had Nothing to do with doctor who and those angels were also #very irrelevant to the plot of the series #but now i know What That Was #and idk i just think that's funny #how after Years of not knowing something i accidentally get the right information i need to answer that specific question #also i've had this situation before where in 5th grade i was walking around in my school and a classmate i didn't really know was crying and #talking to someone and i was wondering what was going on and why she was crying #and then years later in 9th grade i become friends with that classmate who was crying and at some point she tells me the story of what #happened that day #and i had completely forgotten about that but when she told me the story i just remembered and was like 'oh yea i was wonder what happened' #so yeah #i like moments like that a lot actually #lea's random thoughts

oh gosh, welcome! in general i am BAD about remembering who i follow and who i don't; a great way to find who you want to follow might be to just go through the #hermitcraft tag and follow people you find funny, or, heck, if i reblog a lot of art from a certain artist you like (or not a lot, like one art even), go follow them!

while we're here, a few additional general etiquette rules (keeping in mind that like, this is tumblr, trying to claim ANYTHING is a whole-community norm is basically impossible i am claiming a norm from my specific circle of guys): do not crosstag, only tag things that are actually in your post. don't use the 'minecraft' tag, that tag is for people who like the actual game. (i mean, you can use it if you are posting about minecraft, but not if you're posting about the youtubers). it's generally considered rude to put your crit in the main tags, especially without tagging 'discourse' somewhere so it can be filtered. shipping should generally have a 'hermitshipping' tag on it for filtering purposes as well, but if something is tagged hermitshipping and you're mad about it just like, block them, they did the important part.

the hermits i know of on tumblr (could be more, idk): @/joehills @/pearlescentmoo @/falsesymmetry @/therealdocm77 (not actually active but has the account) @/geminitayyt. cleo also had an account but it is no longer active. also @/inthelittlewood is here and like very active, as is @/askzloyxp and @/quinnhills. as a general etiquette rule, just... act like they're perfectly ordinary tumblr users and continue your business as usual! and don't send them weird asks or anything.
