Got a little snippet of a witch!Maka AU for @soulxmakaweek Day 5: Vulnerability

“This is Selwyn, my youngest son,” Aneirin Evans stated, causing Maka to narrow her eyes at the way he’d uttered the last word.

She had a handful of good and bad memories about her papa, but they all seemed to leave an uneasy feeling within her chest once recalling the fallout he had with her mama and the final days they’d spent together as a family.

“I assume that you’ve agreed to our terms then,” Mosquito spoke from beside her, probing the witch into focusing her attention upon the slim man in front of her as he kept his bloodshot eyes leveled towards the floor.

“Yes, and I anticipate you properly dealing with our competitors in exchange for him,” Aneirin Evans then hummed before Wesley Evans unceremoniously turned on his heel and slammed the door on his way out of the room.

It was at that moment that Selwyn Evans finally looked up, allowing Maka to notice the emotionless facade he seemed to have been holding throughout the whole exchange.

They practically bartered him away like property and still felt as if putting him in a lower position would’ve looked bad for their family pride?? Maka thought while gaping at Selwyn Evan’s still figure in front of the wide dais she was seated on.

The witch had found it a bit comforting that they’d decided to put him in a pinstripe suit and dress pants rather than the plain black robe and obstructing mask which were customary for the lower members of Arachnophobia.

However, she wasn’t sure if that sense of ease would even last since he’d technically been assigned the role of being her sentient meat shield until they could find a way to effectively utilize his abilities as a scythe.

“Um Selwyn, do you mind handing me that book,” Maka called to the man, who seemed to flinch at how her voice reverberated through the empty room.

He then looked back to see Maka pointing towards a large memoir sitting outside of her book fort before walking over and grabbing it for her.

“Will…that be all Lady Bushida?” he questioned, causing the witch to let out a small breath.

“You can call me Maka. Lady Bushida sounds way too old-fashioned in my opinion,” she clarified.

As if everything else in this castle isn’t old-fashioned Maka thought as Selwyn lowered his head into a bow.

“Right, I’ll remember that La-uhh Maka,” he murmured.

“Hmm, thank you Selwyn,” the witch hummed while watching his face slightly morph into a grimace.

“What’s wrong?” Maka probed, forcing the man to meet her eyes in a stunned frenzy.

“It’s just…Selwyn sounds really old-fashioned to me,” he whispered, almost as if he was afraid of being blighted from existence for uttering something like that out loud.

“Ohh, so do you go by anything else then?” Maka asked before watching him clumsily rub his palm across the back of his neck.

“You can call me…Soul,” he offered.

“Ya’ sure do read a lot,” Soul chuckled, causing Maka to ignore her book in favor of meeting the man’s gaze.

They’d been able to become more acquainted after his first day in the castle, which elicited Maka into being comfortable enough for him to sit on the dais with her.

“Well…there’s not much to do other than that,” she countered, earning a hum out of Soul.

“I would’ve expected you to at least…ya’ know go out once in a while but-“

“The Bushida family has always served as a placeholder until the resurrection of Lady Arachne. That’s why I’m in this room everyday,” the witch countered over Soul and then cringing at how strained her voice had become.

“Right…sorry,” the man murmured before a thick silence began to wash over the empty room once more.

Ugh, why do I let these feelings dictate me so much Maka thought while looking down at her vintage copy of The Memoirs of Frederic Chopin and running an idea through her mind.

“What kind of songs are the Backstreet Boys releasing these days?” the witch asked Soul, only to raise her eyebrows when his head zipped backwards to look at her.

“…What?” he questioned.

“Y’know, the boy band,” she added as Soul broke into a fit of laughter.

“Ahh, sorry I just…,” the man exclaimed while watching Maka’s face morph into a pout.

“That just really caught me off guard. They, ehm, fell off a long while ago,” Soul stated as the witch began to scoot closer towards him.

“WHAT NO WAY!” Maka shouted before realizing how long fifteen years in isolation truly were.

“Hmm, a lot of musicians lose popularity after a while though, so it’s not really all that weird. My brother worries about that kinda stuff all the time,” the man elaborated while Maka felt his body tense up beside her.

“I’m sorry Soul, I shouldn’t have brought that topic up-“

“Oh nah, it’s ok. You didn’t know,” he added while moving his hand closer towards her own, causing the witch’s heart to slightly flutter at the way their fingers were pressing against one another.

“Sure I got sold off, but at least I got something good outta’ it,” the man added as Maka looked up to meet his crimson eyes.

“What?” Maka questioned while beginning to slowly tap her thumb on his forefinger.

“Havin’ someone not shut me out for once,” Soul finished before muffling his hand within her own.

On the origin of Trin

The first tentative concept Picrew of the character that would become Trin was saved to my laptop on April 16th 2022, and I made a note to myself at the time that the vague concept of the character had been around for about a month at that point. So, we'll consider today, March 16th, to be Trin's first anniversary of existing!

To mark the occasion, I've decided on a total whim to lay out the timeline of Trin's development from the first idea I had, to the character she is today.

Beginnings

Fittingly, Trin technically started her 'life' as three people- triplets, to be exact. I decided that I wanted two of my VB peeps (a Cipher and a BoS guy) to have a child to continue the Ciphers arc into the post-NV era in my convoluted Fallout headcanon universe. I wanted to make a trigonometry reference, and so for the sake of that, the one child quickly became three. I'm not the most mathematically-minded or original, so of course these triplets were intended to be named Sine, Cosine and Tangent.

The triplets got very limited character development, especially since in the one (1) scene I ever pictured them in, they were about two years old. I didn't decide genders or much personality-wise, but I did set out that Sine and Cosine were identical 'twins', Tangent was not identical to them, and that reflected in their personality as they felt conflicted identity-wise and tried to strike out on their own. The main thing I did determine was some details of their physical appearances, with Tangent having short black hair and the other two having longer blonde hair.

Three Become One

At some point after creating the trigonometry triplets, I realised that adding three new interlinked main characters and trying to follow their arcs in the meticulous detail I always do would be simply too much to keep up with. I'd secretly started to favour Tangent and they'd already received a bit more development than the others, so I decided to focus on them and have Sine and Cosine occasionally crop up as background characters.

Soon after this, for reasons I don't entirely remember, I decided to do away with the triplet idea altogether, just have one BoS/Cipher character, and renamed the concept of what had been Tangent to Trinity (bonus fact: it's now canon in-universe that Trin was almost named Tangent as a baby). Still no gender or characterisation yet, and I still only pictured the character as a young child.

First Sightings

And so now we come to April 16th 2022. The first ever image of Trin:

This was also the very first time I envisioned Trin as an adult. I wasn't really getting any strong gender vibes, and had an inkling that the character would turn out to be some variation on the theme of nonbinary.

I continued adding small details and rotating Trin, as I now began to call them, in my brain for a while, and to my mild surprise she soon informed me that she's a cis woman (honestly, that still sometimes surprises me lol).

On May 29th came the first instance of Trinposting! I posted this mysterious drawing of a new character I'd been developing.

To Appalachia

I've always struggled to create new characters on demand for a particular purpose (which is why a lot of my player character OCs start out with a 'placeholder' version, and some unknown length of time later suddenly get more development). The creation of Trin happened to come at a convenient time for me, as I'd been contemplating attempting a new playthrough of Fallout 76 for several months. One day in June, the inspiration suddenly struck me hard to get this playthrough on the road now, and my mind happeend to be thoroughly immersed in Trin at the time, so naturally I decided to play as her. I originally considered just using an AU version of her due to 76 being set so early in the timeline, but I'm no stranger to altering canon for my own needs, and so in-universe, Trin arrived in West Virginia in 2295.

In-game, this was one of her first nights above ground. In-universe, I consider this the earliest canon screenshot of Trin, taken on her very first night in Appalachia (all the Vault stuff had to go considering her amended origin)

When I first started the playthrough, Trin was very much still primarily a blank slate of a character. She had an established backstory, but not a lot in the way of personality, talents, opinoins, and the likes. After I'd been playing for a week or so, had got to grips with the game mechanics and was no longer solely focused on survival, she really began to show herself through the in-game choices I was making.

On Sexuality

I don't remember at what point I decided/was 'told' by Trin that she was aroace, but I do know that I never much thought about her orientation prior to that and would never have considered anything else to fit her. Getting personal for a second: Looking back, it feels very coincidental that this took place not long before I myself finally figured out I'm aro as well as ace, and I feel like my exploration of aromantic-ness (aromanticism?) through the lens of Trin played a bigger role in my discovery of that than I've ever previously really acknowledged.

Becoming Crunchy

By August, she was much more developed and had become thoroughly enmeshed in the 76 world, and I, being the same plague-obsessed Chaos as always, decided it was high time to Scorch her.

From here, a lot happened plot-wise, but the basic characterisation of Trin has remained more or less constant. She left Appalachia for around a year in-universe to focus on trying to recover, eventually came back with a friend and some new scars across her face, built a mini settlement, entangled herself further in WV and its factions, made yet more friends and re-encountered some old ones, aaand most recently cut her hair.

I'm still thoroughly obsessed with Trin, and don't foresee that changing in the near future! She's very quickly overtaken all of my other OCs to have the highest populated tag on my blog, and that will probably continue for Some Time lol. I just wish I could kick myself into gear to write up more of her story hgfdfgf.

Oh hey, you managed to get 'fics featuring Robyn where her name isn't in the placeholder title' bingo! :D I'm going to answer both, because they're both fun.

'Do it anyway / Be honest, anyway'

This one is a fic I've been poking at on and off for ages, and exists in a couple of different mutually exclusive partial drafts as well as one big main unfinished first draft, but the basic idea is that Robyn finds a way to get in touch with Ironwood after she learns the truth about Amity from Blake and Yang, and they end up in an 'enemy of my enemy' situation in order to deal with the whole 'Jacques Schnee is on the council, fucking hell' situation. It's fun, it's basically me taking the fact that Robyn was surprisingly willing to give James the benefit of the doubt and trust his good intentions during the dining room scene and going 'what if she'd reached out earlier when they had a chance to talk it out between just the two of them, and he'd pulled the stick out of his butt that he's got re: her for long enough to have a proper conversation?' And it's also got a little bit of riffing on my favourite headcanon re: those two, which is that James taught classes at the Academy while she was a student and remembers her as a mouthy pain in his ass and that's part of why he's so hostile towards her as an adult.

Here's a snippet:

Ironwood held out his hand.

“Take it,” he said. “Use your Semblance. You won’t believe me otherwise.” Robyn looked from his face to his white-gloved hand and back again, surprised and trying to read his expression. He looked and sounded exhausted, but his hand was steady and his face resolute.

“We’re really going to do this?” she asked. “You’re going to answer my questions?”

“Yes,” said Ironwood. “It’s the only way you’ll understand.” He took a deep breath, and let it out in a short sigh. “You’re right, Miss Hill, I don’t like you very much. I don’t agree with your methods, and I think your priorities are short-sighted. But the only way you’ll learn about the larger picture is if I tell you what it is.”

“Wow,” said Robyn, raising her eyebrows. “I guess it is honesty hour. And I’m not even holding your hand yet.” She reached out, but before she took his hand she stopped and looked him right in the face. “In the interest of reciprocity, General, I could say the exact same things about you. But I’m willing to believe that you care about protecting the people of this kingdom as much as I do. This -” she indicated his outstretched hand - “this helps. But don’t think it’s going to be all it takes to get me on side.”

'It Was Your Heart On The Line'

This one is the second fic in a 'verse I've named 'Take My Hand', part one of which is the 'Penny and Winter go to the Vault together and manage to talk some sense into James' fic that I've published over on AO3 as 'Corner Me And Make Me Something'. This one moves away from Penny and Winter and on to Robyn and Qrow, as James has to deal with more of the fallout of the bad decisions he's made that night and is trying to walk back as much as he can.

It's also got another change, which is that Clover wasn't killed by Tyrian, just very badly injured and at this point in time is in surgery and no one knows if he's going to make it or not. (Spoiler: he does. I can milk all the angst I could want from the situation by putting him in critical condition for a while, but his actual death would just be pointless and cruel. This is a more hopeful AU than canon.)

I haven't actually written much of this one yet, it mainly exists in my head as a bunch of scene outlines, but the basic gist is this: James heads down to the stockade to talk to Qrow and Robyn, having gone via the med centre to drop Winter off with the doctors and check in on Clover's condition. It's still ambiguous whether Qrow is to blame for his injuries or not, they were still clearly inflicted by his weapon, so James is still angry and upset at him, and blaming Qrow to distract from the fact that it's also his fault. Robyn, fed up of James's bullshit, immediately starts tearing him a new one over the mess he's made and the fact that he did all this after she stood up in front of the whole kingdom and supported him, and then uses her Semblance to prove that Tyrian was the one that injured Clover. Then she stomps off in order to go help coordinate the rest of the evacuation of Mantle, which Penny talked James into continuing in the previous fic.

Cue James and Qrow left alone together, and Qrow demanding to know what happened with Ruby. (Who James has already talked to, also at Penny's insistence, a conversation revisited in flashback.) They're both mad at each other and worried about Clover on top of everything else, and it's a whole big fun mess of Disasters With Emotions. Probably with at least some acknowledgement of my headcanon that they have romantic history as well as their Weird, Complicated, Sometimes Vitriolic Friendship, because gotta have the Ironqrow Agenda, but things are too stressful and complicated for anything of that sort of happen between them at this point in this particular AU. This scene is the vaguest in my head, structure-wise, because I like to write these sorts of big argument-conversations by picking a place to start and then just letting the characters have a go at each other for as long as it takes to get everything out in the open.

I'm not sure yet where this one ends, but it probably leaves off with them having decided on some sort of plan of what they're doing next, and an acknowledgement that James really ought to be in the med centre as well, because what the hell did he do to his arm? (This being the first time Qrow has learned of that particular situation.)

Bad Trip, the final chapter! Posted to AO3! With art!: 910 words. Bad Trip totals at 127,685 words and I'm happy it's complete. :D

Hippie AU/Original: 664 words, and ended! Lots of stuff if we ever get back to it (the myriad relationships, actually going forward to a happier part of their lives, etc) but this was a good ending point.

Editing "Crossover" (placeholder title) which is the sequel to Bad Trip! Which has been complete for a couple months now, but obvs had to wait for Bad Trip to end. But now we can! And I say "we" because it's a cowriting production between myself and @the-lastcall, and this one (unlike a lot of our cowriting, which is for fun), we hope to post to AO3. 7872 words edited tonight!

Also today: got 40% of the Small Explodey Heart blocks sewn together in rows. Maybe can finish over the weekend? That'd be nice.

1. What themes would you like to write about that you feel don’t get explored very often?

okay! so, to be honest, i think this has actually become a very popular theme more recently, but ive always enjoyed aftermath as a theme? especially as it pertains to side characters. so a lot of my stories will start AFTER the big action climax and will usually follow the fallout from that and how the POV characters navigate that. And usually like, I tend to gravitate towards the characters who either weren't really actively involved in the main event (karin, for example) or who were ancillary to the main characters (more of itachi, i think)

another theme that i really enjoy is non physical kinds of strength? like, strength of will, mental strength, emotional strength. i would say that personally i feel like these themes are common only when paired with physical strength? like the hero is usually a mix of both, but i prefer to write protagonists who arent physically strong but get by using other means. i also really like kicking itachis ass w his mysterious illness to make him a little less op

5. Would you rather write a happy ending that soothes the soul or a tragic ending that hurts the heart?

hehe definitely the former. i like opening with angst and then spending the rest of the story untangling it. im gonna sound like a broken record, but since karin and itachi are my go-tos for writing, angst is a little hard to avoid unless its a big au. i think karin got the 'bad' ending in canon (not badly written, but on the bittersweet to tragic scale), so i try to avoid putting her right back there in fanfic lol.

21.How do you come up with titles? Do you use placeholders or tend to change your titles while writing the first draft?

i would say maybe - 1/10 of my fics have easy titles. usually i pick a poem or something that i like that fits and ill stick with a line from that. for some ill try to incorporate the lines extensively, if i can, though some its more like - this single line says everything im saying here. other than those, i almost exclusively use placeholders until i nail down a good one.

24. Do you let your story evolve as you write or do you meticulously plan everything prior to writing the first draft?

I really wish i could plan things out but i cant. sometimes for a fic ill let the idea simmer and then sketch out something rough? like ill start writing the first scene and then start blocking out the rest of the fic for how i want the plot to progress. usually most of these marks will stay in, but about halfway through the process i usually start looking at themes to incorporate (i can either start with a theme or a plot but not both) and then add scenes to nail it down better. my process is hell and there's a reason im super slow!

Hi, Hello, Hey. First of all–thank you! This is my standard you offered to write one of my fandoms, so you’re obviously a perfect paragon of humanity and all that jazz opening spiel, full of generals likes and dislikes, I’m sure you know the drill. I’ll make sure the fandom specific stuff is up by the time assignments go out. (That said, if you already have an idea about how you want to write about the fandom we match on—wow, I’m jealous! tell me your secrets!—just skip over the fandom stuff and go forth with your bad self.)

Things I like include, but are in no way limited to: fun with POV, fun with linear vs. non-linear storytelling, fun with tone, fun with writing. I really dig character studies, stories that really get into what makes a character tick (and something porny that can get at that is wonderful too), and I like relationships that are hard and prickly and worth fighting for. I like happy endings that don’t feel tacked on or forced. I like doubt, and hope, and theology; I like actors, and directors, and I like the random deity. I like fairy tales. I like (love) romance tropes. Forced to share a bed, marriages of convenience, fake dating, friends-to-lovers, idiots-to-lovers, enemies-to-lovers: it’s all like unto catnip. I like interesting turns of phrase, I like the perfect line, I like any story written just for me. If you have any questions about my taste (or lack thereof), feel free to ask @summervillen who probably knows my fannish tastes better than I do.

Things that I would prefer you not include—especially gratuitously; there are obviously ways to engage with problematic actions/thoughts/etc. in fiction, but there’s such a fine line there—are as follows: noncon, necrophilia, pedophilia, incest, non-character driven racism/sexism/[all]isms. I also have a pretty big embarrassment squick. A/B/O doesn’t do anything for me. And I’m not really interested in AUs for any of these fandoms: canon divergence is fine, but not-related-to-canon alternate universes really aren’t my preference here.

Babylon 5 Delenn/Susan Ivanova I just ship them post-canon so hard. Later in life chances at love are sort of a thing of mine, and add to that two of my favorite characters ever, well, it’s like this pairing is made for me. That said, if you can find a way to write them during canon (maybe John doesn’t return from Z'ha'dum, maybe Delenn and John just never get together at all, maybe you can think of something I can’t) I’d love that too. Delenn/Shaal Mayan I’d love a story about them that’s really Minbari–that understands that neither of them is human. Something set when they were young and just figuring themselves out (and first love is rarely forever but it feels like it must be) or something set when Mayan visits Babylon 5 in season one or, heck, something set after the series ends. (I have a thing for writing on skin, so if you can find a way to fit that in more power to you.)

ER Jeanie Boulet/Kerry Weaver Elizabeth Corday/Kerry Weaver

Oh, the women of ER, how I love them. While I don’t want a never a medical professional AU, I’m fine with playing loose with canon events for these. (That said, I love that Jeanie can be HIV+ and fall in love, have sex, be happy, so while you don’t have to go deep on that I’d rather you didn’t change it.) I love the idea of post-series Jeanie/Kerry, but would also love something that takes place earlier (does Kerry realizing she’s attracted to Jeanie make her admit she’s a lesbian? do arguments over staffing lead to heated makeouts in the break room?). As for Elizabeth/Kerry, just think of all the sparks. All. Of. Them. I’m not a huge Mark fan, so I’d rather he not be front and center, but I’m fine with you including him as part of Elizabeth’s past if you want to go that route. I’m also fine with ignore canon relationships all together. Go wild, basically.

Doctor Who Donna Noble/Thirteenth Doctor Donna Noble/River Song

Donna. Deserved. Better. Which is to say: ignore what happened to her, fix what happened to her, however you want to go about it, but make it better. I mean, imagine a world where Donna just shows up and has fun times with whatever Doctor is Doctoring at the time, and when it’s Thirteen they have to pretend to be married for some reason or other and, oh, kissing feels good! Or maybe River meets her during one of those times, and they spend so much time rolling their eyes about the Doctor that they end up in bed! (Or, um, feel free to go a threesome route with Thirteen, Donna, and River. If you want.) I just really do not want a story that is all about how much Donna loses or that ends with her without her memories again or any of that—if you fix it but keep what happened as story-canon, go ahead and have her deal with the fallout if if you want, but I can’t really cope with that being the (eventual or in-story) ending.

Star Trek: Classic Timeline Beverly Crusher/Vash Kimara Cretak/Kira Nerys

First of all, I don’t know book canon, so include it, don’t include, whatever floats your proverbial boat. Second of all, I am more than happy with “this character lives” stories here. Which is to say, feel free to have Cretak escape/live/etc. Feel free to ignore anything that happens to Bev or Vash or Nerys. I basically think there should be reams and reams of fic about both of these pairings, and yet there is not. For Kira/Cretak I’d especially love something that recognizes that neither of them is human; play around with what we know of their cultures, about how those cultures might clash or unexpectedly mesh, how that can affect a relationship both positively and negatively. And just have fun with Beverly and Vash (and feel free to bring Picard in if you want, either as a friend or a third romantic partner or whatever). And of course I love the crews of the Enterprise and Deep Space Nine, so their reactions and relationships with everyone involved are more than welcome additions (although, again, not necessary).

Game of Thrones Brienne of Tarth/Sansa Stark

Look, the show did everyone dirty. The show did their relationship dirty. The show did writing dirty. Feel free to fix things, either by using the canon ending as a jumping board—maybe it turns out that an all-seeing-knowing-etc. being doesn’t make for a good king and revolt happens! maybe Bran and Sansa meet up for some sort of political thing or another and Brienne’s there as Lord Commander and things happen!—or by going AU (in the for want of a sense, not the everyone’s in space sense). Oh, and this is definitely a pairing where I would dig service kink if you are interested in writing such a thing. Look, it’s right there.

This is also the only pairing I requested a vid for; I’d love anything that builds on their relationship, maybe plays around with service and fealty and honor and the way different women fight. Nooo...dude, you WANT there to be a twist/it to be supernatural/AU/etc...not gonna happen.

Ummm....loovvee your faux outrage about teh gheys.....dude, they never DID, because they’re non-Core Four characters that were never given any build up or development to begin with (or chemistry. Or acting talent). And the only reason Pinkle has ever BEEN popular was because tokenism/peeps fapping to hi lezzies...

Plus just because Molars and Tinkle are currently in a het relationship doesn’t make them not bi....sooo...nooooo...

IDGAF what Vermin does or doesn’t “feel guilt” over....but since we see her weeping of Daddykins funeral, we’re talking about like an episode...and it’s largely to:

A) spur her “friendship” with Slizzy, so we can have the BAV triangle happen in a bit

There is no “X-Men plot”---this is your idiotic fanfic....and inability STILL to grasp what fucking show you watch. Similarly, since it’s dealing with trauma/fallout, it will actually be interesting (at least for us Cole stans) to watch it play out.

It occured to me that I should probably make a "who tf are all these people" post for my characters. I have a bunch of bios half filled out but I always get sidetracked before I can finish them all and format them, so. Going to try to summarize everyone in a few sentences!

Imry Ceigwardwyn (Adamantoise, Balmung, Behemoth, Cactuar [rule 63] ) -a young Sea Wolf adventurer with a friendly and boisterous personality. Rather naive and clueless. Loves helping others. Both WoL and non-WoL flavors. (PLD/DRK. IC: gladiator w/o a soul stone, unless she does the DRK questline. Has some conjury ability.)

Victor Kresnik (Adamantoise) -expy of Victor from Tales of Xillia 2. Mostly for fun and looking sharp in a suit. Sometimes I play an AU version of him. Doting father, enthusiastic culinarian, estranged son of a wealthy Ul'dahn businessman. (DRG/NIN/WAR/MCH/CUL. IC: who the fuck knows but it involves the black market and murder.)

N'valyh Tia (Adamantoise) ["Val"] -Miqo'te mercenary and incorrigible flirt. Useless bisexual. Blind in one eye. Ends up in relationship w/ Akiv'a after double-crossing him, losing a fight to him, then later saving his life. (NIN/MNK. IC: fights with knives/fists/wrestling type moves, no formal training.)

Kototsuki Malaguld (Adamantoise) -Raen from the western mountains of Othard. Witnessed the fallout from Bozja. Hates Garleans. Exiled from her pacifist clan for having extreme anger issues, lived among the Malaguld tribe for a time before heading to Eorzea looking to fight stuff. (BRD/WAR. IC: fights with a bow & axe)

Nergui Malaguld (Adamantoise) -Steppe Xaela. His parents took Tsuki in when he was young. He's rather intimidated by her. Quiet and thoughtful. Loves to fish. Ended up in Eorzea when his parents sent him after his sister hoping she'd keep him safe. Now lives near Idyllshire with Akiv'a's cousin Sef. (BRD/FSH. IC: hunts with a bow but dislikes fighting.)

Faunh Seket (Adamantoise) -a Miqo’te from Meracydia who fled to Eorzea to escape an arranged marriage. Worked as a barmaid in Limsa before becoming an adventurer. Good friends with Akiv'a’s father. Anxious and judgmental but fiercely loyal. (BRD. IC: uses a bow, plays a mandolin-like instrument.)

Elouan Linvernois (Adamantoise) -Ishgardian astrologian. Falsely accused of heresy but miraculously survived his execution. Joined Faunh's adventuring band after they saved his life. Still heavily scarred & missing fingers. Bookish and a little awkward. Has a huge crush on Faunh that she's too nervous to admit she reciprocates. (AST/WHM. IC: Technically uses conjury but learns some Sharlayan astrology later on.)

Arst Outway (Adamantoise) -Expy/AU version of King Gaius from Tales of Xillia because I couldn't resist plonking him down in a DIFFERENT version of Fantasy Mongolia. (DRK eventually. IC: a big ol sword.)

Weinblyss Galeturner (Balmung) [Eyngeim Klynkestwyn] -Imry's long-lost cousin. Lost her family to a shipwreck as a child, raised by pirates. Now a drifter after her captain vanished in the turmoil of the Calamity. Offers her services as a mercenary and healer. Ruthless, amoral and a bit vain. Triple Triad fiend. (WAR/WHM/MCH/ALC. IC: Uses conjury, esp wind magic. Also proficient with axe & musket.)

Sivana Villeneuve (Balmung) [Noline Sellecerre] -XIVth Legion deserter. From a tiny northern village in Islabard. Joined the army to feed her family after her father perished at Carteneau. Decided self-preservation was more appealing after van Baelsar's defeat and faked the deaths of herself and her partner while on patrol. Worked briefly at Garlond Ironworks before becoming a courier. Irritable & no-nonsense. (DRG. IC: Was an eques. Fights with a spear but has passing knowledge of other weaponry.)

Aerling Dorne (Balmung) [Keiho Oshiga] -XIVth Legion deserter. Son of a Doman woman and a Garlean officer. Joined the army to escape the miserable circumstances of his birth. Was scouted for the Frumentarii but deliberately failed aptitude tests, apparently content to be a grunt forever. Strangely attached to Sivana, would probably do anything for her. Outwardly jovial, cowardly, doesn't seem to take much seriously. (PLD. IC: Was a hoplomachus.)

Pyha Sharpshade (Balmung) -Sky pirate. Former Coeurlclaw. Under Captain Tohnrune Rokren, her crew mostly raids slavers and other pirates who prey on the weak. (Much of the crew are escaped slaves themselves.) Laid-back, friendly, "cool big sister" type, a little impulsive and hotheaded. Doting partner of Duua Kagon. (NIN. IC: Fights with knives.)

Raiya Ceigwardwyn (Faerie) -Imry's older sister by four years. Introverted and a bit awkward, fascinated by all types of magitek. Likes to build things. Eventually follows her sister out into the world to accomplish her dream of joining Garlond Ironworks. (SCH/MCH. IC: dislikes fighting and avoids it as much as possible.)

Nennali Durant (Faerie) -Ala Mhigan refugee, was brought to the Shroud as a young child & raised by a Duskwight couple. Has a strong sense of justice & quick temper, but is a kind and loyal friend. (NIN/WHM. IC: Uses knives to defend herself, has some healing ability)

Tache Wystlan (Faerie) -Ala Mhigan refugee, was abandoned as a baby shortly before the city fell & brought to the Shroud along with Nennali. The two girls were accepted by the elementals on account of their strong innate conjury talents, but the woman that brought them there was turned away. Tache was raised by an adoptive family & in training to become a Hearer when Nennali left the forest, and eventually followed, her desire to be with her friend stronger than her sense of duty. Sweet and friendly and a little timid. (WHM. IC: Conjurer but not afraid to hit people w that stick.)

Yulili Yuli (Faerie) -A girl from Summerford with dreams of adventure and very overprotective parents. She met Imry at the Moonfire Faire one year and took the opportunity to run off and start her own adventuring career. (They actually dated very briefly before Yulili called it off, on account of Imry being too busy for her.) (BLM. IC: thaumaturge.) (also Imry's in game retainer)

Ketenbraena Skaetfyr (Faerie) -the result of Imry getting the DRK soul stone. An autonomous being of darkness born from Imry's despair and her inability to process her grief. (Ultimately sort of a mashup of Esteem-Fray and Myste. This was done before SB came out.) Imry views them as a separate person and wanted them to be able to experience life for themselves, and willed them a body of their own with...mixed results. Eventually she gave them the soul stone and gave up using it herself, since they can't maintain their form without it nearby. (DRK. Very literal here.)

Ragna Estelwede (Famfrit) -a mysterious scholar from Gyr Abania. [Working on this.] (SCH/RDM. IC: Arcanist, dabbles in other disciplines.)

Enzel Silverfist (Faerie) -Ragna's apprentice, a tall and reticent girl who, despite her training in the arcane arts, seems to prefer solving problems with her fists. (MNK. IC: PUNCH STUFF and a lil magic.)

Ehr Tohl (Faerie) -A young dragonet from Nidhogg’s brood trying to find his place in the world after the end of the Dragonsong War. Curious and friendly. Accompanied by his surrogate mother, a white aevis named Faye, formerly an Ishgardian noblewoman from 600 years past. (WHM. IC: Dislikes fighting and and avoids it if possible.)

Relulu Relu (Cactuar) -Adventurer/healer, constantly exasperated. (The result of my WHM of Darkness headcanons being jossed and deciding to make an OC w them instead.) (WHM. IC: conjurer)

Memenu Menu (Mateus) -One of Faunh & Elouan's adventuring companions. Died at Carteneau. Sassy grandma. Formerly of the Order of Nald’thal. (BLM. IC: thaumaturge)

Whispering Glacier (Zalera) -A young mountain Hellsguard who has decided to see the world. Curious & clever. (BLM/RDM. IC: Would be Dancer if it exists. Uses a variant of thaumaturgy.)

Laelius Valens (Goblin) [Laelius dus Valens] -Pureblood Garlean. Commoner who left home & took on a new name & became a security guard for a scientific facility in Islabard. AFAB NB, presents as male. Sharp-witted, dislikes attention & prefers to keep their head down. Self-preservation first and foremost. Reluctantly befriends a young scientist & does their best to keep him out of trouble. (PLD/DRG/MCH. IC: Trained with sword & shield, halberd, firearms.)

Estellise Sidos (Tonberry) -Expy of Estelle from Tales of Vesperia. Mostly a placeholder character b/c Tonberry was my first server and I like to visit. And use the game as a dress-up doll simulator. (PLD/WHM)

Half Highlander/half Hellsguard. Kerrich Fairclough: (all I've got is a name and appearance here) Kamui: a Hingan Raen found adrift in the ocean. He joined the crew with nowhere else to go. Loyal but doesn't talk much about his past. (Two Lalafell brothers who don't have names yet.) Paoriri Paori: XIVth Legion laquearius, was Sivana’s first army buddy. Akiv'a Ryaol: a Miqo’te from a remote Keeper tribe deep in the mountains of Coerthas. His father was a wandering adventurer from the Basilisk (P) tribe who took his young son with him. Saved Imry's life once and they became (reluctant on his part) friends. They are now nigh inseparable to the point where they're often assumed to be a couple. (They aren't; both of them are painfully gay.) Khai Ryaol [P'khai Tia]: Akiv'a’s father. His relationship with Akiv'a’s mother Kiht was unusual in that they had children due to mutual affection for each other. Deceased as of the Calamity. (Akiv'a is named after his grandmother, Akiv, in a slight deviation from regular keeper lore) Iiriku Rururiku: (former) Sultansworn and reluctant adventurer. One of Faunh & Elouan's companions. He and Memenu were old friends. Sanlie Kierha [N'kierha Sarre]: N'valyh's half sister by their father N'sarre. They didn't grow up together and only met as adults. Sefika Ryaol [Sef]: Akiv'a’s cousin, a fierce hunter with a wicked sense of humor. Calgaran Talareis: a mysterious Duskwight woman who trained Imry when she was a fledgling adventurer for a time. Montienne David: Nennali and Tache’s childhood friend. Nennali's parents took him in after he lost his remaining family to the Calamity. X'lhenai: an Ala Mhigan refugee Nennali meets on her travels. They have a tempestuous relationship at best. Duua Kagon: sky pirate, formerly of the Steppe.

General likes:

– Relationships that aren’t built on romance or attraction. They can be romantic or sexual as well, but my favorite ships are all ones where it would still be interesting or compelling if the romantic component never materialized.

– Loyalty kink! Trust, affectionate or loving use of titles, gestures of loyalty, replacing one’s situational or ethical judgment with someone else’s, risking oneself (physically or otherwise) for someone else, not doing so on their orders. Can be commander-subordinate or comrades-in-arms.

– Heists, or other stories where there’s a lot of planning and then we see how the plan goes.

– Femslash, complicated or intense relationships between women, and female-centric gen. Women doing “male” stuff (possibly while crossdressing).

– Stories whose emotional climax or resolution isn’t the sex scene, if there is one.

I love the loyalty kink in this canon, and in this duo specifically: the trust and competence and stoically hidden but very very intense feelings, the willingness to risk oneself or the other person, or to stake a lot on the other person’s competence (and willingness to hurt or sacrifice the other person because their shared cause says it’s right, too, all the times that comes up), the fighting together in tandem.

So - a dangerous mission (or intelligence-collecting situation) where their deep familiarity/trust/awareness of each other’s presence and fighting style and communication come into play (god, that bit in canon where Hawkeye shoots two guys right over Mustang’s shoulder), or where they worry about each other’s safety, or rescue each other? Or a more private scene? I love the intimacy of their work relationship and personal history, on levels from casual to very intense. I love the "protect my back" exchange so, so much (I'm particularly interested in fics set during a time when that is already part of their relationship history, rather than fics set in Ishval or shortly after, and I am not really interested in fics set when they were children or young adults at all) and the way that, eventually, ends up playing out with regard to Envy.

I love the loyalty kink in this canon, and in Briggs specifically - both heartwarming and id-satisfying. (The watch! Buccaneer handing Olivier a clean pair of gloves after she kills Raven! Constant and deeply sincere saluting! And Olivier’s lack of patience for anyone’s shit.) Ordinary or extraordinary circumstances - daily life in the fort, a battle with Drachma where they work together seamlessly, surviving a storm or the typical winter cold? Entire Briggs Is Gay would also non-ironically be neat, as would other ways of exploring the idea of Briggs being a united wall made up of people with a lot of secrets and/or racial and gender differences. This of course can bring in Miles specifically - I love the scene where he recounts Olivier's explanation of why it's important to her to have him as her right-hand man.

Platonic Kneeling

I love the loyalty kink in this canon and the various forms it takes - "I'm your gun" with the kneeling, Mikodez showing the contingency plans to Zehun to make a point, Ragath defecting from the Kel because of what they did to his soldiers - and the variety of important, intense platonic relationships. I don't have a lot of particular plot prompts (I'd just love to see more loyalty and trust, especially under strain - deferring to someone's competence or sense of ethics even though you don't know how it will turn out, making difficult choices, verbal or nonverbal displays of loyalty like the kneeling and swearing and the glove thing)...but for Cheris and Jedao I'm especially interested in a post-Glass Cannon timeframe. (Oh my god, they were roommates telepathically bonded. I quite like their Ninefox Gambit interactions as well when he's in her head, but the fallout of everything that happens in the series and how it creates that strong Jedao->Cheris loyalty is very good.) For Nija and Feiyed I reckon Feiyed mentors Nija after rescuing/recruiting her, and maybe they work together in future? Brezan, Khiruev and Ragath in the Revenant Gun timeline or after, trusting each other with the future of the former hexarchate and working together on an interpersonal level? Mikodez and Zehun at any time, oh my god. I also enjoy the faction loyalty within the Kel and within the Shuos in general, and seeing that play out in some proportion or other of ritualized and personal.

Fandom-Specific DNW: I'm aware that there's a lot of torture and dubcon in canon. I don't mind if you mention that they exist but I'd like to reiterate that I absolutely do not want any onscreen, or any details about torture even mentioned.

Mentor/Mentee Relationships

One thing I enjoyed about seasons 3 and 4 of Korra was the writing team’s attempt to write villains who were sincerely committed ideologues with valid points, even if they became evil in pursuit of their goals, and to figure out how Korra could relate to those villains as the Avatar and as the person that she is. I loved how Korra needed to seek help from Zaheer because as an anarchist he truly opposed what Kuvira was doing and wanted to help Korra, and how she was able to empathize with Kuvira at the end of s4 because the two have some big personality similarities. How might they continue to work together or influence each other after the end of s4? I don’t need a redemption arc if that’s not what you’re interested in writing - Zaheer and Kuvira can absolutely continue to believe that their ideals were correct and even that not all of their methods were wrong - but I would be interested in reading about Korra getting more mental/spiritual tutoring from her enemy Zaheer and deciding how much of that she wants to integrate into her practice, seeking Kuvira’s advice on how to handle ongoing developments in the Earth Kingdom as it transitions to a republic, sparring or practicing bending with Kuvira, Spirit World meditation adventures with Zaheer… (I haven’t read the comics, so you can either take or leave comics canon.)

Fandom-Specific Exception: I've been a Korrasami shipper since s1, so if your vision for this fic includes a big part for Asami, consider that an exception to my unrequested-ships DNW.
