This is Aunt Polly Jackson from the 19th century.⁣
She was once enslaved, but managed to escape well into her old age. ⁣Like many others, Aunt Polly escaped slavery via the Underground Railroad and settled in Ripley, Ohio.⁣
She dedicated the rest of her life to helping others win their freedom by opening up her home and feeding those who either came to Ohio to settle or those who just needed some rest before continuing further up north.⁣
During this time, anti-abolitionists had set up what was called the reverse underground railroad, which was a practice of kidnapping not only the enslaved that had managed to escape, but also those who were already free. The reverse underground railroad operated for 85 years from 1780 to 1865.⁣
Aunt Polly would deliberately dress herself to appear as a weaker older lady in order to fool the anti-abolitionists who typically were not interested in capturing older people. Her weapon of choice was a butcher knife, which she hid under her clothes, and a kettle of boiling water. Aunt Polly was able to successfully fight off several slave catchers while working along the Underground Railroad.⁣

Polly Jackson or Aunt Polly Jackson was a key figure in the Underground Railroad movement, and her name is listed on a local monument dedicated to her and others who risked their lives to help free the enslaved. The migration of fugitives from the Deep and Upper South to the North accelerated. She traveled to Ohio. She fought off slave catchers with a kettle full of hot water and a butcher knife. It was difficult for women to defend themselves against male pursuers, and this discouraged them from running away. Women driven to the end of their limits would flee and defend themselves in any manner that they could.
She joined a community of free Blacks in the settlement of Africa, Ohio. Many of the local Black residents served as conductors on the Railroad. Africa was a settlement created by Blacks who escaped slavery. It allowed Blacks to have land and create a life for their families. She was able to buy land and settle on a farm in Africa. Because Africa was located along the northern route of the Underground Railroad, residents living in Africa helped Blacks escape slavery. They were victims of raids by anti-abolitionists.
Little is known about her life. Her birth and death are unknown. She witnessed the anti-abolitionists terrorizing her people, so she decided to help her people.
She became a conductor on the Underground Railroad. To disguise herself, she dressed as an older woman, the disguise allowed her to not be attacked by the anti-abolitionists because they didn’t see elderly Blacks as a threat. She was so successful at fighting off anti-abolitionists that she gained a reputation in the settlement of Africa. Her reputation grew with the anti-abolitionists, so she became more strategic with how she helped Blacks escape. She was not the only person fighting off anti-abolitionists, but she became famous because of her tact and success. She, along with others fighting for the freedom of enslaved Blacks, helped to slow down and end the anti-abolitionist system. #africanhistory365 #africanexcellence #womenshistorymonth

Note
that picture of aunt polly jackson is colourised so obvs we dont know exactly what the indigo staining looked like but it's actually there isn't it? that wasn't just a choice made by the colouriser when they retouched the photo?
Project Guttenberg put out a WPA book with former slave narratives (with B &W photos) from different parts of the U.S. and there were a lot of interviewers who were stunned and commented on the stained indigo hands of a lot of former slaves. I've seen a B & W photo of Polly Jackson before (If I remember correctly I think she was interviewed in Ohio, or she was formerly enslaved in Ohio) and I could see the stains even in the B &W photo.
The movie "Daughter of the Dust" does a wonderful job of showing that stained indigo history (Julie Dash has Gullah/Geechee roots) in the low country. The literal stain of slavery was embedded in the skin of many Black American slaves and never faded. They were reminded of that time visually until the day they died.

At first, Y/n was muttering to herself, constantly. Things like, “no”, “it’s alright, it’s not real”, and “I’m just imagining it”, things that made the family exchange looks of concern and confusion. One person would raise their eyebrows upon hearing Y/n’s quieted rambling, only to earn mirrored eyebrows and a shrug from the other person.
Next, she was acting...off. She’d find excuses to go home early, or to reschedule dates her and Tommy were supposed to go on. He assumed she wasn’t interested in him any longer, until she confirmed that his assumptions were incorrect, but it was her small tone of annoyance that continued to Tommy after that day. If anyone else asked anything, she’d have actions that’d suggest she just wasn’t in the mood.
Then she began to show up everywhere late, tired, puffy eyed, sometimes she wouldn’t even show up at all. It was beginning to concern Tommy, but he brushed it off, as she pleaded for him, again and again, not to worry, offering to do anything that would make him feel better.
Now, she hadn’t left her house in almost an entire month. He was done “not worrying”. Polly visited her as much as she could, but like when Ada had lost Freddie to the coppers, Y/n refused to even let Pol know she was alive. Ada joined her aunt some times, but both women were unsuccessful in getting Thomas’ lover to do anything.
He himself was in a panic, trying to figure out what on earth could’ve been preventing her from leaving. Was she in danger? Dead? Gone? It was nagging at him.
Tommy was beginning to do the same; not leaving his office unless he need to, determined to find a way to get the woman he loved back. He often sent his aunt or sister, sometimes even Lizzie, to check on Y/n, but they all came back with the same answer to his hopeful expression. Nothing.
“Listen, Tom, you need to go to her yourself. We’re not the one in love with Y/n/n, nor are we your little messengers.” Polly leaned against Lizzie’s desk, the woman nodding in agreement with Pol.
Thomas hesitated, but closed his eyes and nodded, waking back into his office to prepare. He grabbed Y/n’s favorite treats, which he stashed in a small cupboard in case Y/n ever waited for him at work, and a bottle of gin. The blinder rushed out of his office, leaving Polly and Lizzie with raised eyebrows and slight smiles, amused by how fast Tommy walked out of the building.
He decided against going in the family car, against stopping to do anything in general. His speed-walking turned into a slight jog, then to a faster jog, until he finally gripped the things in his hand as hard as he could and took off, running to Y/n’s home as fast as he could.
To be honest, he was excited to see her after they’d been apart for so long, but there were other things. Like his curiosity to why she’d been hiding in her home for so long, his desire to kiss her roughly and make sure she was okay, so many things were racing around his head. The point was, he just needed to know she was alright.
When he approached her door, slowing to a stop, he reached for the knob, twisting it to find that it was locked. He knocked a couple times, earning no response. Knocked again. Still nothing.
“Y/n? Love? Are you alright? It’s me, T-”
The door swung open to reveal a puffy eyed Y/n, the tip of her nose a shade of reddish-pink to show she’d been blowing it a lot, dried tear stains on her cheeks, her home was dark, though it was the night.
Tommy let his eyes study his beloved as much as he could in the small amount of light a bonfire, taking place across the street, provided. Her hair was messy, her clothes looked like they’d been the only thing she’d worn during the time she’d been in her home, she looked smaller than before, and she had circles under her eyes.
“Love...”
“Tommy.” Her relived smile began to deteriorate, Y/n falling into Tommy’s arms as tears escaped once more. He caught her the best he could, gin and snacks still in his grip, and walked inside with her, closing the door behind him after setting down the items on the small table by the door.
“What’s wrong, my love?” He asked her as they sat down, Y/n resting her head on his shoulder.
“They... they’re gone...” Tommy furrowed his eyebrows, confused. “Tommy,” she turned to him, watery eyes and a shivering bottom lip, “they died...” Y/n pointed to a newspaper from her hometown, the headline’s big bold black letters guiding Tommy to the realization.
“Shit...” Her little brother died due to a fever spreading throughout the smaller place, only two years old, so pure and innocent, he felt her pain almost immediately. The boy played with Tommy and Finn, enjoying Finn’s company more, but still having a special place in the Shelby’s heart.
Y/n cried harder, moving and shoving her face into Tommy’s chest, wrapping her arms around him. His arms came around to hold her close to him. The paper explained not only her physical and emotional state, but the state of her home, things remained unused, unmoved, as if she’d been in one spot for the entire month, doing nothing but mourning her sibling.
“Come, love, let’s get you out of these clothes.” She didn’t say anything or move, so Tommy helped her up, picking her up like one would his bride, and carried her to her room and set her in the small tub sitting across her bed.
She just sat there, unmoving, expression still empty, heartbroken, grieving. He knew she had to be cleaned one way or another, luckily, he’d help her clean up before, so he knew all of her cleansing preferences. Some might say it wouldn’t matter with her catatonic-like-state, but it did matter. He wanted her to feel better, and he knew just the ways to do so.
He grabbed a cloth, dipping it into the warm water, and scrubbed the soap onto her body, then washed it off using his hands and the small jar she had for that very reason. Once she was properly cleaned off, he moved behind her, bringing his hands to her hair.
Y/n shivered, lip trembling again, the salty droplets slowly sliding down her face again. She wasn’t entirely bawling or crying like she’d been earlier, she was calming and had taken the time of her silence to process everything, slowly coming to another stage of the grieving process.
Acceptance.
And Tommy was the one to thanks, as she moved past the depression stage, finally. He helped her from the tub, helped her dry off, then walked to her wardrobe. He picked a soft nightgown and slipped it over head. It was the gown she said made her feel like she was sleeping on clouds, the gown he bought her the first night she slept in his home.
Finally, he brewed some tea and poured a cup for Y/n and himself. Taking the two glasses into her room, he brought the gin and snacks as well. “Here, darling, you’ll need to eat, as well as drink something. And here’s some stuff that’ll help with the... pain.”
She nodded, reaching for the gin and taking a swig. “Thank you, Tommy. I don’t know what I’d do without you...” Tommy moved the tea towards her, wordlessly telling her not to just drink the gin, and that she’d feel better with the tea as well.
“There’s no need to thank me, Y/n/n. I’m here for you and with you through this.” He shifted on her bed, taking her face into his hands and pressing soft kisses to her hairline, then forehead, then her lips. “I’ll be there for you, whenever you need me, I’ll be there.”
“L-likewise, my love... And um.. Tommy?” He nodded. “Do you promise?”
“I promise. Whenever you need me, just- just call my name, and I’ll be there."

I finished watching the first season of The Haunting (of Hill House) and I didn't like it!
Tumblr media
My first impression:
I used to love Shirley Jackson original book, The Haunting of Hill House, and I loved that the author called one of the daughters like her, but... I don't liked how they change the background story: Hugh Crain built the house for his family and was the beginning of the tragedies.
Maybe, if the authors could keep the Sanderson surname, not change all the background story of the house and choose other name for the children, it would be better: in the book Theodora was an artist, —that was supposed to be lesbian by critics —, Eleanor (Nell) was a disturbed women and both of them were chosed by Dr. Montague as "medium" for his researches on haunted houses, and they weren't related at all. On the other hand Luke Sanderson, the other main male character, was really related to the owner of the mansion, that was his aunt, and was there to watch on Dr. Montague experiments.
I don't know how will evolve the story, but I hope it will be interesting as the original book (I saw also others movies adaptation and there were good).
Tumblr media
The novel has been adapted to film twice, in 1963 and again in 1999, both times under the title The Haunting. The 1963 version is a relatively faithful adaptation and received critical praise. The 1999 version, considerably different from the novel and widely panned by critics, is an overt fantasy horror in which all the main characters are terrorized and two are killed by explicitly supernatural deaths.
Why I didn't like the show:
1 - Ten episodes of NOTHING: being ghosts is not enaugh to make your characters interesting!
Ten episodes of NOTHING. This show is one of the few TV shows, movies or books that left no emotion at all in me. When I finish reading or watching movies and TV show, I feel always a deep melancholy for a world that close his doors, but here I felt nothing. Great photography, no jumpscares. I appreciated that, but there wasn't a real plot and the ghost stories have only a superficial touch in TEN EPISODES.
I don't know if watch the next season or not...
2 - In a story about haunted hauses, the main creepy, scary events are supposed to happen in that damn house!
Ok. This is a show about an haunted house, so the ghost creepy events are supposed to happen only in that damn house... Not out.
Mr. Dudley told Hugh that his wife nightmare and vision stopped when they stopped to work in the house by night... I feel so confused!
And more important: if you told us that the damn "red room" is the stomach of the house, you just can't let ghost following the characters even to L. A.!
You are saying that that damn house has eaten them, they have been digested and now are part of the evil and darkness of the house. THEY JUST CAN'T GOING AROUND. FIND OTHER NARRATIVE SOLUTIONS!
3 - Ghosts not even were not interesting (we know very little about that past), but they aren't even scarying!
There were Polly, the beautiful flapper girl, her husbdand William, the tall men with the bowler hat and thr walking stick, their unnamed daughter and son in wheelchair...
There were Hazel and her daughter Jacqueline, who used to play with starry teapots!
And... I discover that Hazel was William's sister on reddit. Wow.
Oh, in the show is mentioned that William must have at least another sister, but we know a very little about William himself, so reasonably we couldn't expect some more!
They only thing we know about William he was generically mentally insane and walled up himself alive in his own house.
Of Polly we knew a little too: she was generically crazy”, met William in an asylum, they fell in love, get married, have two children and she died at an old age, even more crazy, as Hazel did.
From the show we didn't know how her relationship with Hazel was (it was just said that William didn't get along well with his sisters), but on reddit I discovered that both Polly and Hazel blame each other for their children's death: Polly thought that Hazel murdered her children, Hazel thought Polly murdered her daughter.
On reddit it is also said that Mr. Dudley could be the extramarital son of William. Wooow. So much information!
Why, why the hell they didn't put this on the show? Oh. Yes, they didn't want to steal space to the useless Crain's family drama!
4 - Mental illness is portrayed as glamour and all the difficulties of recovering from a drug addiction were all simplified in the final episode!
Both Olivia and Nell characters are so clean and nice, they are loved by evrebody and their mental illness have a very little impact of their social life: yes, they both commit suicide, but at the end was said it was all the ghost of Hill House to blame.
Well, honey, mental illness is not clean and nice, most of the time. I talk by experience!
And recovering from drug addiction is so easy, when all the ghost disappear and you have such a supporting and lovely family with you.
Ok. Yes. Thank you for exposing your Disney-like ideal of life, but poeple keep having drug problems, even if they have a loving and supportive family at their side. Most of the time, the family actually pay more times for their loved ones recovery.
And all the main characters' problems easily end with a simple hearth-to-hearth talk with their dead sister. That's too superficial, even for a stupid mainstream TV show.
5 - Basically the whole show is just This Is US but with ghosts: full of good sentiments and feelings. They love each other so much, even if their “big brother” is an idiot and they barely speek with their father.
6 - All the Father/Parents-Children issue is superficially portrayed in the show.
Hugh trys his best, but fails. He didn't make amend with his children, only with Steve, the narrator, to whom he shows what really happened the night in which his mother, Olivia, killed herself. Hugh loves his child, but at the same time keep them away from him. Their problem is not they can't communicate with each other, they don't even try it! And don't want to hear other's position. Also the Dursley storyline is a bit annoying: yes, I know that it is meant to break our heart and it does, it does, when Mr. Dursley told to Hugh about his born-dead daughter. But the Abigail part was just a big nonsense: Oliva murdered their only daughter and Mrs. and Mr. Dursley were unbelievable so comprehensive with Hugh and agreed with him that “no one must know”. Their daughter's sould has been eaten by a dark, evil entity and they didn't care! They keep her at home to “protect her”, but to protect her better, they just could take miles and miles from Hill House! A big nonsense!
7 - The director and screenplayers deleted all the nasty, anxious atmosphere of the original book.
Shirley Jackson described Hill House as “arrogant and hating,” full of “sickening, degraded cold.” In the novel, we’re trapped not merely inside this malevolent architecture but in the mind of an unreliable mouseburger named Eleanor, a spinster whose sanity gets eaten away during her days at Hill House, where she’s gone to participate in a study about the paranormal.
In the show we just see Olivia floating around the house with her long gown. Her slowly corruption by the house is not scary nor shocking at all. We are not trapped in her ill and weak mind, we just saw her smiling and talking with herself in some occasion, and finally asking herself: “Oh, this strange lady dressed as a 20s flapper is telling me to poison my own children, why I shouldn't trust her?”
It would be more shocking if she actually kill all her family. That would be more impressive. Again: Olivia and Nell mental illness is fashioble, charming, not scarying. They are so well dressed, with perfect hair and make up. No one Eye bugs on their face. They look like healthy girls who sleep very good every night. You are not worried by their behavior. They look normal. Not even insane. Just a bit stressed as can happen to everybody.

Title: Just a Little Longer
Summary: A man comes to the house asking for your hand in marriage. Tommy’s not pleased.
Words: 3225
Tumblr media
“Arthur’s called for a family meeting.” Thomas Shelby looked up from where he was seated next to you at a desk, the two of you bent over some papers, as Finn walked into the room. Immediately, he set about discreetly analysing his brother’s face, searching for any obvious sign that what Arthur wanted to discuss at this meeting was serious. The boy looked a little flustered, but apart from that he seemed fine.
“Right.” Tommy stood to his feet and you moved to follow him until Finn shook his head and gave his brother a knowing look.
“Minus the baby,” he said quietly, and Tommy rose both brows, glancing over at you just in time to catch you rolling your eyes. There weren’t many family meetings the boys had that they deemed unsuitable for you to hear - they’d been involving you in a lot more business-related work recently - and so knowing this was one of those moments set a curious glint in his eye.
“You know, I’m only one year younger than you, Finn. I’m not a baby,” you said. Nevertheless, you huffed and reluctantly plopped yourself back down onto your seat. Both your brothers smiled at your plight, clearly believing that your crossed arms, pouted lips and slumped form did nothing to aid in moving your insistent statement along the right path.
“Stay here,” Tommy told you as he moved around the desk, “and see if you can work out any more of those numbers. I’ll be back as soon as I can.”
He fell into step with his younger brother, the two of them pacing down the hallway towards the family room. “What’re you teaching her?” Finn asked a moment later, referring to the numbers he’d heard him tell you about.
Tommy adjusted his cap. “Nothing much, just simple adding up wages and such. I want her to get more involved in what we’re doing – I’d hate for us to have another Ada on our hands where she goes off with some man and leaves the business entirely to us.” He sighed deeply. “Anyway, what’s this Arthur wants to talk about?”
“Oh, Arthur’s already talked about it. He just wants your opinion on the matter, s’all,” Finn said, an odd mix of both amusement and anger in his voice. Tommy glanced down and his sharp eyes caught sight of his brother’s clenched fists. He stopped in his tracks.
“What do you mean Arthur’s already talked about it? I thought this was a family meeting; discussions don’t start until everyone’s there.” He stared at the younger Shelby, frustration getting clearer in his voice. The two of them were standing a few feet away from the door to the family room, and though there were no clear voices emanating from behind the door, the atmosphere surrounding it seemed to be seriously intense. Finn sighed and looked at the door for a moment before turning back around and stepping a little closer to his brother.
“Look, Tommy,” he said quietly, “I’m gonna tell you this now because I know how you are with these kinda things and I think you need to be somewhat prepared.”
Tommy rose an eyebrow in expectation, mind whirring with thousands of possibilities. “Spit it out, then.”
Finn swallowed. Hard. “A man knocked on the door a few minutes ago. We thought it was for business, but when he came in, he said he was here for something else.”
“What do you mean? Get to the fucking point, Finn.”
Finn honestly wished Arthur had sent someone else to get their brother, but, as always, he seemed to be the message boy of the family. The look currently on his older brother’s face was definitely not something to be trifled with, and he hated being on the receiving end of it, so quickly set about explaining. “He wants to marry Y/N. He came to our door asking to marry our sister, Tommy, and, as expected, Arthur lost his temper. Surprised the man’s not run off, yet.”
Tommy blinked, completely perplexed. He wasn’t sure whether to laugh or throw himself into some pit of rage, and so he simply settled with nothing at all. Placing a hand on Finn’s shoulder, he turned, straightened his jacket and walked through the door.
The first thing he looked for was the new face in the room. His blue eyes found it almost immediately. It belonged to a fairly tall chap, probably only a few inches shorter than himself, with dirty blonde hair and light brown eyes. He had one of those faces you couldn’t decipher – was he sad? Was he happy? Angry, excited, terrified? – but at this current moment, all he wanted to do with that face was punch it.
Arthur and John stood off a little to the side, the younger of the two’s hand gripping the older’s shoulder tightly, as if keeping him in place. Arthur was breathing heavily, face bolting around to face him as soon as he walked in. “Tommy,” he said, brushing his brother’s hand off his shoulder before moving forward, “this fucking man-”
“I know, Arthur, I know,” Tommy said, voice cooler than even he expected. Calmly, he pulled out a chair and sat down, whipping out a cigarette, lighting it, and swiftly pulling it up to his lips.
Tumblr media
The man belonging to this new face stepped forward with an air of forced dignity and honour about him. “Mister Shelby, I-”
“Don’t speak.”
He shut his mouth, blinking rapidly and ducking his head as if in embarrassment before slowly stepping back and unconsciously biting his lip. Tommy smirked faintly, taking a puff of his cigarette and looking over at his brothers. “Where’s Polly?”
“Says we can handle this ourselves,” John said.
Tommy nodded. That was fair enough; their aunt was protective of you, of course, but nobody could compare her protectiveness to her nephews’. Theirs was fierce and completely, totally built on deep love for you. Doubtless, she did not agree with what this man had come to ask of them, but she didn’t need to be there to add her input. She knew what the outcome would be.
“What’s your name?” A small smile accompanied his query as he looked up at the man in question and moved to lean his chin on his fist.
“Jackson, Sir,” he replied. “Jackson Rodgers.”
Tommy nodded. “Funny,” he said, “I’ve never heard my sister mention that name before.”
“That’s because she probably doesn’t even know the fucker,” Arthur spoke up from the side, though he remained where he was. Tommy knew his words were correct, though. Truthfully, he himself couldn’t remember ever seeing the damn man even once, and he’d made it a point to subtly visit every one of your friends to ensure they were what he considered safe to spend time with. If you hadn’t told him about Jackson, there’d undoubtedly be more people you hadn’t mentioned to him, and that would lead to endless trouble from him on your side. But he knew you knew that, and he also knew you didn’t want that. So, really, there was only one other option.
“Is that right?” He waited for the wisp of smoke to waft out of his mouth before he lifted his head a little more to gaze up at the man in front of him. “Do you know my sister?”
He seemed to stumble for a brief moment before settling on an answer. “Yes.”
Arthur scoffed and Tommy nodded. “Right. How?”
This garnered an even longer hesitation. “I’ve seen her around town.”
Both Finn and John stared at each other for a moment before bursting into a fit of relentless laughter, doubling over and slapping their thighs. Jackson stood silent, yet Tommy could see his face growing red – not with embarrassment, but anger. His sharp brown eyes had dimmed slightly, and his fists were clenched so tight his knuckles were almost white. Temper. This man had a temper, and if something as simple as two men laughing at his expense brought out that temper, he doubted he’d ever get himself a woman that escaped the occasional abuse. Despite this, Tommy couldn’t help the small smile that appeared on his lips before he reached his cigarette up yet again to puff. “That so?” He put a hand out to his brothers, signalling for them to quieten down. “You seen her around town, yeah?”
Jackson’s face hardened and he glared at Finn and John for a brief moment longer before turning it on Tommy. “Yes.”
“You can hardly count that as knowing someone, Mister Rodgers.” He wasn’t even looking at the man, and yet he could tell that he probably looked like a raging bull at this moment. Sure enough, when he lifted his head just enough to lay eyes on him, red was practically all he saw.
“Mister Shelby,” Jackson said, clearly still attempting to cover his angered tone with a calmer one, “I am a respectable man-”
“Respectable!” Tommy laughed. He snuffed his cigarette and threw it across the table before crossing one leg over the other, leaning back in his chair and folding his hands in his lap. “How old are you?”
“Twenty-nine,” Jackson ground out.
Tommy nodded. He’d thought as much. Looking over his shoulder, he pointed at his brothers. “You see Johnny boy over there?” John stepped forward, intense glare on Jackson never wavering. “He’s two years older than you. That’s it. You’re practically the same age, and yet you want to marry his little sister.”
Jackson fidgeted slightly, though Tommy could see it wasn’t out of awkwardness. His lip kept twitching, and his balled fists looked as though they were ready to hit someone at any time.
“Do you even know how old she is?” Arthur spoke up from the side, voice slightly calmer yet still extremely unforgiving. The man in question glanced over at him before turning his gaze back on the head of the family.
“Answer the question, Mister Rodgers,” Tommy said with a faint nod.
Jackson had the decency to look frightened for just a second before he schooled his features and lifted his chin defiantly. “No. But I do know that she’s a young lady that needs to be married-”
“Needs to be married?” Tommy’s voice had risen a notch. There was a deep frown on his face as he reached up to remove his hat, placing it on the table before standing to his feet and moving closer to the man stood in front of him. “Needs to be married, you say? My sister is seventeen, and only just turned. She’s not even of age yet, so don’t you dare tell me what she needs. I haven’t thought about her marriage once. She’s a fucking child.”
Jackson soon came to find himself face to face with none other than Thomas Shelby, his nose mere inches from his own. Now he was closer, he could clearly see the anger swimming in those blue - like hard, cold ice - eyes, and the way his jaw was firmly tended. No doubt he was trying desperately to maintain his composure and control the emotions that were so obviously struggling to take over.
“Children get married to older men all the time, Mister Shelby.”
“Not in this house and not to men like you.”
Jackson stiffened. “As I said, I am respectable-”
“There’s nothing respectable about coming into someone’s house and asking to marry their seventeen-year-old sister, a girl you’ve never even met before!” Tommy hissed. “Do you seriously believe she’d want to marry you?”
“She doesn’t have to want it,” Jackson said, moving his face closer to Tommy’s. His voice was challenging, steady, and yet nothing but poison. “You’re her brother. Make her!”
The man couldn’t contain a gasp as he was slapped hard on the face. The sting and burn that accompanied the leader of the Peaky Blinders’ hand connecting with his cheek only grew worse, even after Tommy had withdrew, and he hastily reached up to grasp at his aching skin. He turned accusing eyes on the offender not a second later, yet made no move to speak. All signs of confidence had drained from his face, leaving nothing but fear and shock. He expected to hear the faint sound of John and Finn laughing yet again, but nothing reached his ears. The room was silent, the only sound being the hazy voices of men working outside the room. He turned his attention back on Tommy as the man made to speak. “I would never make her marry a fucker like you,” he ground out. “In fact, I would never make her do anything. I’m her brother, you piece of shit, not her slave master. All you want from her is the money she has and the body she owns. I doubt you even know her fucking name.”
Jackson had the good sense not to answer. Each word the older man uttered seemed as though it was dripping with venom, and it was all aimed at him. If he’d ever doubted the notorious Peaky Blinders before, he didn’t now.
Hesitantly, he looked over at Arthur, John and Finn, all leaning against the wall, smug looks gracing their faces. “You lot are mad,” he said quietly, though it was loud enough for them all to hear. “Why you wouldn’t want someone like me as your brother-in-law I have no-” He stepped back as another slap was aimed at his still-burning skin, and this time, the distinct sound of laughter coming from the three men by the wall reached his ears. He clung to his cheek yet again and glared at Tommy, who stood rooted to the spot, feet apart, arms crossed over his muscled chest, and an all but emotionless expression on his face.
“Do you want to say anything else, Mister Rodgers?” he asked, calm and smooth. Jackson breathed in deep and had the decency to look slightly shameful.
“No, Mister Shelby. I don’t.”
Tommy nodded, the corners of his mouth turning upwards. He stepped forward. “I can’t believe you had the nerve to come here and ask that of me. You’re a brave one, I’ll admit, but if you actually walked through that door with the intention of marrying my sister than your skull is thicker than it looks. When she marries, and it won’t be for a few years yet, it’ll be for love or for business. I’m not handing her over to the first man that walks through my house.”
Jackson scoffed and opened his mouth to speak again, but Tommy held up his hand and tilted his head slightly to the side. “You’ve had your say, Mister Rodgers, don’t speak another word. You came here with a question, and my answer is no. Now, get the fuck out before I hit you again.”
“Run back to your mother, boy,” Arthur said, and Jackson had just enough time to give him the middle finger before turning and hurrying out the door.
“Yeah, and don’t come back, you rat!” John shouted. “Else Tommy’ll beat you up and leave you to rot on the front step!”
Tommy rolled his eyes at his brother’s words but nevertheless smiled slightly, shaking his head. The door shut loudly, almost shaking the building, and he sighed before reaching down for his hat. “He won’t be coming back.”
“He better not,” Arthur said, smoothing back his hair. Tommy looked at him for a moment before walking towards him. He knew his brother, and he knew Jackson had probably received a mouthful from him before he himself had had his go; Arthur’s temper was not something to be messed with and certainly not something easily reined in.
“You alright?” he asked.
Arthur nodded. “Yeah, I’m fine. The nerve of that boy, though, Tommy…”
Tommy placed his cap on his head and reached out to squeeze his brother’s shoulders. He ducked his head to catch his eyes. “No one’s going to be marrying Y/N anytime soon, Arthur, least of all someone like that. She’s the last Shelby; we’ll wait for her, this time. She’ll make her own choices when she’s older. But, for now, we look out for her, as we’ve always done, and we keep those fuckers off her tail, alright? No one’ll get near her if we have anything to say about it, which we will. The next time someone comes in here asking for her hand in marriage, we’ll say nothing, and I give you permission to punch him in the face before we kick him out onto the streets.” He smiled at Arthur, who returned it immediately, before pulling him into a quick hug. “No one’s taking our girl away from us just yet, brother.”
Tumblr media
You grumbled something incoherent as your mind puzzled over the numbers on the paper Tommy had told you to continue with. They were all over the place, really, and all you wanted to do was scrunch it into a small ball and throw it into the fire. Of course, you wanted to earn your firm place in the family business, but you knew it wouldn’t be for a little while yet, and even so, numbers were not your thing.
Footsteps coming towards you broke you from your slight reverie and you lifted your head, sighing in relief at the sight of Tommy. “Thank God,” you mumbled before giving him a smile. “Is everything okay?”
Your brother nodded, reaching for his pack of cigarettes still laying next to you and moving behind you while lighting one. He glanced over your shoulder. “Yeah. Just dealing with some idiot.”
“Oh.”
“Nothing for you to worry about. How’re you doing with those numbers?” He sat next to you and listened intently as you showed him all you’d done so far and what was left to do. All the while, he couldn’t help but let his eyes linger on your guileless, youthful face, and his attention strayed entirely to the way you were rapidly talking childish nonsense and getting increasingly frustrated simply at the prospect of dividing.
He shook his head the slightest bit, wondering to himself how anyone could take one look at you and think it alright to have you as their wife. You were a child, the baby of the family, and he wasn’t just saying that. Giving you a husband would take away your freedom and your innocence, something he adored in you, but, more importantly, giving you a husband would take you away from him and your brothers. No matter what anyone said about the Shelby family, the one thing that would always remain true was the fact that you came before anything else, even the business. He’d be damned if he handed you over to a man – any man – and only saw you a few times a month, or even possibly a year. You kept the family together; you were the light, the hope, and the future of the business, and without you he’d probably spend most of his days at the pub, drinking away his problems instead of sitting with you, listening to you simply speak and feeling those worries and fears drift away into nothing. You kept him sane. You kept him whole.
And he needed to hang onto you just a little longer before he let you go.
Just a little longer.

The Adventures of Tom Sawyer- Themes:
This is the story of a mischievous boy living in a small mid-west American town in the mid 19th century. He keeps getting into trouble and finding his way out of it again. Some of the novel is about Tom’s romance with Becky Thatcher, a new girl in town. They like each other and experience relationship problems, which are eventually resolved. Tom hooks up Huckleberry Finn, the son of the town drunk. One night they sneak out to a graveyard where they see Injun Joe murdering Dr. Robinson. Most of the story is now about that murder and its repercussions. After various adventures connected with Injun Joe and some treasure he is hiding, during which Tom and Becky are lost in a cave for days, Tom solves the mystery surrounding Injun Joe and his whereabouts.
The themes of this novel are:
- Boyhood and growing up
Tom Sawyer is a rebel. The adults who surround him are constantly concerned by his rule-breaking, fighting, ducking out of chores, truanting, telling lies, stealing treats from his Aunt Polly’s closet, and so on. All that is presented with humour and affection. There is not a trace of judgment in Twain’s portrayal of him. In fact, Tom’s escapades are a delight to read. His gang’s activities are often satirical mirror images of the town’s adult behaviour.
More daring and imaginative than the other boys, Tom is admired by them. They all misbehave, but never in such a bold manner as Tom, which makes him their leader. His friend, and rival in wildness, is the unsupervised boy, Huckleberry Finn. He is every boy’s dream, envied because he is free to do as he likes without adult censure. The boys of the town bond through rebellion, and those who don’t conform, such as Tom’s half brother, Sid, are isolated.
Adults who don’t conform are also isolated. The mirror image is the expectation of good behaviour among them, so the criminals, Injun Joe and Muff Potter are outcasts, excluded from society.
The theme of boyhood includes the mapping of Tom’s journey from rebellious boy to responsible citizen through the process of maturing. Tom is an intelligent and sensitive boy and he realizes that his actions can have serious consequences. He is driven to make several moral decisions like testifying against Injun Joe and protecting Becky Thatcher from being whipped by their teacher by taking the blame for ripping the book.
The other model of boyhood does not lead to an acceptance of society. Huck Finn also matures. He performs the most heroic act in the novel when he saves the Widow Douglas’ life. However, even after he wins the approval of the adults he is not drawn into the kind of behaviour that would make him completely accepted. He does not conform, by going to church, developing table manners, and so on, preferring to live on the outskirts of society instead.
As the novel ends we see the two boys presenting as two different models of looming adulthood. In spite of that, they continue to bond through their firm friendship. Such friendship is a characteristic of boyhood that Mark Twain endorses as enduring wisdom – a friendship that will be with them throughout their lives.
-  Adventure
Adventure, exploration, and discovery are central themes in the American experience. It is at the core of  The Adventures of Tom Sawyer.
Tom is an adventurer, an explorer, and a thrill-seeker, driven by his imagination and sense of nobility. The novel’s title is a nod towards the popular emerging literary genre  – the adventure novel – and reveals the author’s intention of commenting on it. He makes repeated references to other tales of high adventure  like “Injun Joe’s cup stands first in the list of the cavern’s marvels; even “Aladdin’s Palace” cannot rival it.”
Moreover, the sarcastic tone of the novel presents a postmodern self-consciousness – the sense that the author is telling a story that is aware that it is a story being told. Tom’s adventures subsequently become a commentary on adventure stories. There is an echo of Don Quixote in that Tom’s imagination like Don Quixote’s plays the central role in his adventures. It is a comment on the role of imagination in the premise of adventure. Tom is connected with Don Quixote with his romantic swashbuckling.  Like the knight of La Mancha Tom is self-made, formed by his reading of romantic adventurers.
-  Adult hypocrisy
The novel is set in small-town America. It is a close-knit society where everyone knows everyone else. The townsfolk see themselves as law-abiding, Godfearing, church-going, stable families who raise their children with discipline, with the aim of turning out responsible adults.
Almost everyone goes to church on Sundays and all accept a common set of moral values. The town judge is the most respected figure and he administers the law with rectitude and fairness.  School attendance is compulsory and education consists of reinforcing the inflexible rules that guard the town’s social values. It is a model of what a good society should be.
However, the town is full of children and they can muddy the water. The novel focuses on them, particularly the boys, who are led in boyhood rebellious behaviour by the rebel-in-chief, Tom Sawyer. Their activities frequently show gaps in the adults’ logic, and reveal a degree of hypocrisy, as they often say one thing and do another. Aunt Polly intends harsh punishments for Tom’s behaviour but is unable to follow them through to harsh action. Tom is sometimes punished for not doing as he agreed to do, but her hypocrisy in not carrying out her threats is not, and in that sense she is being hypocritical. In spite of that, she remains a moral authority.
When Tom joins the Cadets of Temperance he does that, not because of any belief or understanding of the cause of temperance, but because of the effect that the fancy sash he will be allowed to wear will affect his standing among the other kids. The author suggests that the adult members of the Temperance group are similarly motivated – more impressed by the actual membership, with its insignia, than by the cause itself.
The author extends his satire to the hypocrisy in 19th century America in general. For example, Aunt Polly is typical of small-town American women in her belief in quack medicines. That is a reflection of Tom’s and Huck’s belief in black magic but, whereas there is no authoritative affirmation of that, there are medical ‘authorities’ in support of the efficacy of quack medicines, who are themselves charlatans.
The town’s adults fail to follow through on their word in response to Tom’s various transgressions.  In running away to Jackson’s Island, getting lost in the cave, and tracking down Injun Joe’s treasure, Tom and his friends break several serious rules, but in every case, the villagers don’t punish them. Mark Twain is suggesting that one can’t condemn the community for their hypocrisy in desiring the children’s safety. He is affirming the ultimate goodness of community, which is not a simple matter of the strict policing of children. Hypocrisy is not always such a bad thing and can be forgiven when it results in the good
