I just know Mike would be SO SWEET to an autistic little reader having a meltdown… I know that man would immediately turn off the lights and silence any noise and put u under a weighted blanket and he’d give u the best hug of ur LIFE,, I’m going feral
OH NONNIE YOU KNOW HE WOULD OMGS he’s autistic too so he knows exactly what to do and let me write a drabble about this
◞♡࿐
Unfortunately, it wasn’t your day. Everything seemed to go as wrong as it could have. You woke up late for work, your shift was abysmal, and you hadn’t eaten a single thing. Your mood was horrible, a reflection of the day you were having.
So when you got home, which was where your two favorite people were, everything was just too much. Abby sat on the floor drawing while watching the television and Mike was cooking dinner. The cacophony of smells, sights, and sounds were so nauseating.
You began to tear up while also regressing, dropping your keys which made you flinch. The simple tears grew to sobs while you settled into a small age, catching the attention of the Schmidts.
Abby ran over to you and asked what was wrong, unknowingly making the meltdown even worse. Mike, on the other hand, knew exactly what was happening. “Hey Abs, why don’t you go draw quietly in your room?” He whispered to her, coming over to you. “But I want to help!” She reasoned, watching as you fell to the floor softly.
“I don’t think you can help right now. You know how sometimes you get overstimulated?” Abby nodded. “That’s what’s happening right now. There isn’t much you can do. So please, go shut off the television and go to your room.” She almost responded but looked at you and then instead nodded at her brother. The TV was eventually shut off and Mike then could hear his sister’s door close quietly.
He turned to you and then looked around the room, assessing what triggers there could potentially be. So, he closed all the blinds, turned off the lights and the stove, put the half-cooked food away in the fridge, and bent down next to you.
“Is it okay if I talk to you?” Mike asked softly, changing his position so he was sitting instead. You hesitated before you nodded, beginning to rock yourself back and forth slowly. “Is it okay if I touch you?” He then asked. You took longer to think about this question, unsure if you would like it. But eventually you nodded again.
Seeing your head move up and down, Mike put his arms around you. He squeezed, knowing you liked the pressure. You only sobbed more, enjoying the feeling while also getting used to the lack of things happening around you. “I’ve got you, baby, you’re okay.”
◞♡࿐
mike is so gentle and kind and he’s definitely had meltdowns before and so has abby so he knows what to do and he just wants you to feel comfortable and safe and T_T

your post about mike having astigmatism is so real!
as a fellow astigmatism haver i often joke that i have two things that start with an “a” and end with a “tism” (i am also autistic), and i can now see mike making the same joke lmao
The amount of times i have said or typed Autism instead of Astigmatism is unbelievable so my heacanon is that Mike also mixes up the words and jokes about it

mike schmidt just cannot stop looking at you. (no warnings, it's fluff.)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
mike was never one to hold eye contact with people— at-least, not until he learned that in adulthood his employers would very likely think he was an absolute fucking weirdo, or think he didn't care about the jobs he absolutely needed, so he had to learn to force himself to hold eye contact with his peers. he could hold eye contact with abby the easiest— considering that was his little sister. but with you, it's more than just holding your gaze. it's the fact that he can't look away from it.
it was harder when you two first met, obviously. but it was a little bit easier as you two got closer, step by step, until you two became inseparable. his avoided eye contact was no longer really intentional, only when he was deep in thought, before he'd turn his attention right back to you. and then he started holding your eye contact, not even looking away once you did. he had to pry his eyes off of you, most times. he stopped caring about his staring problem eventually.
mike woke up before you, always. it wasn't easy for him to sleep in the first place— the ambien not doing much to really keep him asleep— he always woke up with a start right after the reoccurring dream, before going right back to sleep and doing it all over again. but your face met his each time, and he'd drink in your sleeping form, his eyes absorbing every single detail on your face, like he was imprinting it into his mind. and if he was just too tired to keep his eyes open, or it was too dark in the room, he'd wander his hands over your cheeks, envisioning the face he memorized long ago. that's what'd lure him back to sleep, each time.
mike who starts to tear up every-time he looks at you for a bit too long. you just look so beautiful, he doesn't know what to do with it. close is never close enough with you— he can never hold you close enough. some days, he cups your cheeks and just stares at you, such longing in his eyes, it has you flustered as you turn your head away, before he's redirecting you with the softest "no, look a'me. please". you've ever heard.
some days, mike is so afraid that if he stops staring at you, you'll slip from his fingers just like garrett and everything else besides abby in his life has. so he drinks you in as much as he can, because if he ever loses you, he'd never forgive himself if he forgot what you looked like.

The Schmidt family and Autism, using patterns, dialogue and sources from both the Movie and novel adaptation
NOTE: These are all my personal understandings of their Behavior and mannerisms. These could very well be something else entirely to you— this is just my interpretation based upon my personal experiences of being on the spectrum. Do not use this to twist my words or anyone elses.
It's also to be noted Autism can be and a lot of the time is genetic— so both Mike and Abby showing signs and symptoms of autism is something in itself.
Mike
• Is Viewed as reclusive, only likes a selective amount of people
• Has a hard time picking up on social cues; doesn't pick up on when people are flirting with him or giving him special attention unless it is very blatant.
• Describes the smell, sound, and very detailed descriptions of people and places around him— also describes being overwhelmed by these senses.
• Unintentionally eavesdrops on people due to his keen senses. He does not seem to like that he does so, and often opts to shutting out the rest of the world in favor of his own daydreams of an ideal/better version of his life, entirely in his own mind
• Doesn't speak his thoughts, oftentimes keeps to himself and keeps his emotions close to his chest. He bottles up these emotions almost constantly until they overflow, causing occasional emotional outbursts when triggered. (fountain scene) can be similar to autistic masking
• Is viewed as strange, violent and crass due to his enclosure of these emotions. Misunderstood, and expresses an exhaustion of trying to convince others otherwise.
• Resting bitch face 24/7
• Doesn't speak to people unless directly spoken to— and if so, it's usually very brief. If he feels no need to speak, he won't, and will simply sit there in silence until the person he's speaking to gives up and moves on. (As referenced in his interactions with Reaglan/William.)
• Very burnt out; borderline disassociative. While this has no direct connection to autism, many autistic individuals usually have these kinds of issues as long term side effects.
• Has described difficulty in reading others emotions, and has even described having trouble differentiating and identifying his own emotions. he also seems to struggle in verbalizing and showing said emotions (Alexithymia; very common in autistic individuals)
• In the same sense, however, he's very observant— he's able to recognize very quick shifts in facial expression and other observations others wouldn't regularly note. He also mentions people's faces and their expressions many times in passages, implying he pays close attention to people's facial expression in order to gauge their thoughts and emotions. This can also be considered a form of autistic masking.
• Likes routine; seems to get thrown off when said routine is disrupted. Has a specific order of events on how he wakes up and goes about his mornings.
• Has established trouble in being able to keep a job. While this is partially due to his own academic struggles, a good portion of his aforementioned job failures are because of things of his own manner. (Again, not directly connected to autism, but something many autistic individuals struggle with)
• Probably a lot more, but I can't really think of them lol
Abby
• Is described multiple times as a very reclusive kid, often times refusing to speak unless directly spoken to
• Has a guidance counselor specifically because she does not fit in with the other children her age and presumably refuses to socialize, preferring to draw rather than interact with children her age (outside of her "imaginary friends".)
• Likes to hide away in her "hidey tent", and only leaves to sit at her desk to draw. Expresses sadness that she cannot fit said desk in her tent
• Only likes specifically the desk. She does not like the chair paired with it, as she doesn't like how it feels.
• Does not eat regularly, often has to be encouraged multiple times and/or forced to eat unless it's something she likes
• Is described as "Mentally ill" by her aunt
• Refuses to talk to people, similar to shutting down
• Also expresses "tantrums" similar to autism meltdowns, like when she's under the belief that Mike is giving her off to her aunt
• Is very stubborn, oftentimes viewed as "disobedient" because she prefers to go off and do her own thing rather than what people want her to do
• Very smart, but has trouble with cues sometimes— cannot seem to tell when people she views as close to her are lying to her or attempting to manipulate her (the ghost kids) unless they're easy to read or she is very familiar with them (like Mike)
• Similar to Mike, Abby shows a mild disdain for her surroundings and the world around her; opts instead to delve into her own world derived of her own mind
• Observant; very easily able to read those she is familiar with.
In conclusion; the Schmidts are autistic as hell and Scott cawthon has somehow, by some insane circumstances, created two characters with some of the most realistic autistic rep I've seen to date. What in the world.
