“Baz Pitch isn’t white,” I say into the mic.
The crowd boos. I begin to walk off in shame, when a voice speaks and commands silence from the room.
“She’s right,” they say. I look for the owner of the voice. There in the 3rd row stands: Rainbow Rowell herself.

I have so many theories and meta about the Simon Snow Trilogy, I should stop thinking about it and write them down.

Wayward Son reread!
starting the story with an Epilogue really confused me at first
the idea of Baz with a beard/ facial hair is....
Truly as much as Baz talks and thinks about kill/ draining ppl I don't think he could... likes Simon and Penny would (and do) without hesitation but does Baz even kill any of the vampires??? (Double checking he does kill 2 of the RenFest vamps with fire but only when Simon is in deep danger -- he also does kill some vamps at the end battle but again... Simon in danger)
I don't think Simon ever really learned to regulate his emotions. Like in care it was no emotions and at Watford he needed to be extreme to go off... and who was going to teach him control? Definitely not the mage. And none of the Adults where going to stand up to his mistreatment (or even acknowledge that it was happening) and now in WS he still doesn't know how but now it isn't ok because he doesn't have magic has a back reason
"he looks like Quasimodo" (page 5) i know that in AWTWB his wings fold in more (?) but i always think that Simon looks like he has a hump back whenever he has to hide his wings under clothes
"Surprise! it's your exboyfriend and his boyfriend and that girl you never liked very much!" (page 9)
Agatha and Simon are two peas in "what is my sexuality" pod. in my head Agatha is AroAce (ppl can be mad about it and yes i've read AWTWB) and Simon is Demisexual
WS again references Simon transforming into a dragon so...
"(fuck men, always trying to trap you alone.)" (page 34)
Simon has memory loss about his childhood (specifically this is referencing non Watford childhood) (page 38)
"'Yah. Do it, Snow. Live dangerously.' Says the vampire teaching me how to drive." (page 56)
it makes he laugh that NO ONE told an Adult they were going to American....
Penny and Baz friendship makes me smile
"'Imagine dating a legend.' That's the trouble. I don't have to." (page 85)
"Something specifically American: a gun demon,..." (page 127)
when Simon and Shepard meet and both turn into golden retrievers wagging their tails at each other
everyone calls the were-skunk something different
i don't think Baz knows how not to not pretend to not be a vampire (what did i just write..? - he doesn't know how not to pretend to be human)
"'We are made of magic. Without our magic, you're worse than Normal. You're useless'" (page 159) - this hurts real bad cuz Simon could have overheard (i don't think he did but if this was less of a YA book i think he would have)
so many things happen with Margaret that i'm not even sure i have a half-baked theory on what she says to Simon
Simon likes kissing Baz but doesn't like to be kissed (page 206)
f*ck creepy Lamb
there is a slip where Lamb reveals he's working with the Next Blood vamps but if you don't know you don't know (page 278)
do you think Baz was in Lamb's thrall? or was Baz just really hoping to see the good and a teacher in someone like himself?
so much goes down after the fight - and i have a grumpy face that the book ends with a prologue...

Chinese editions of Simon Snow: Part 1 of 2
Tumblr media
So my wonderful girlfriend decided that she wanted to read @rainbowrowell 's Simon Snow series, because she knows it's my favourite. She thought getting the Chinese versions would be a faster and easier read, and I obviously benefit entirely from this decision.
Initially, I was excited to just get a hold of these stunning covers, but I'm fascinated by translation and it turns out that there's so much to say about these editions.*
The titles
I'm obsessed with these choices, to be honest. Not only did they decided to give the series a name, but the original titles do not resonate to the general Chinese audience so they all have brand new ones:
The series: The Son of Prophecy
Carry On: Burnt Forest (or essentially, what's left in the forest after being burnt)
Wayward Son: Exile Desert
Any Way the Wind Blows: Silent Battlefield
I'm gonna leave that without comment, but I'd love to chat about it with people!
All of the titles have 4 characters, which is a deliberate and popular aesthetic choice in Chinese.
The covers
You know those little mini black jackets in the pic above? They use those to give a quick sales pitch for the books. The Carry On book, for example, says, roughly, "Magic school roommates + mutual pining nemesis = to love or to kill??".
Carry On:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Wayward Son:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Any Way the Wind Blows:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This book is so big they decided to break it into two. Though the covers are exactly the same, they've differentiated between them with characters that translate roughly to "top" and "bottom":
Tumblr media
Additionally, the AWTWB came with a first edition bonus mini folding screen of all three covers:
Tumblr media
An interesting choice the artist, Marlowe Loop, made was drawing Baz shorter than Simon. I have a theory as to why, but I don't want to speculate without any proof here so dm me if you're curious.
To be continued...
This post ended up being way too long, so stay tuned for Part 2, where I'll talk about the text itself. (Be sure to check the original post for the link to part 2 when it's live!)
*I'll be talking about the translations, but please note that I can't read Chinese myself, and the gf grew up in Beijing and typically reads simplified Chinese rather than the traditional in these books. Our translations are rough.

Six Sentence Sunday
Happy Sunday! It feels like the weeks are flying by. January is gone already what the actual fuck. I'm refocusing on my EGF, which is (in theory) a fuck or die set post-awtwb, pre-sfc.
"But Ashton," you may ask, "Isn't the whole draw of a fuck or die that they aren't fucking yet? Aren't they enthusiastically fucking at the end of awtwb?"
To which I would respond, "fair point."
Anyway, here's an excerpt from AMCOM :)
"Do you actually trust him?  After everything he’s done to you.  Everything you’ve done to each other.”
I sigh.  “I don’t know.”
All the things I’ve always believed I hated about him feel different now, filtered through a new lens.  His relentlessness, his sharp edges, his poise.  The way he moves across the pitch, and plays his violin, sweet-toned and sorrowful.  The singe of his magick.
“I  just … see him,” I say quietly.  “And I know I want him.  The way I’m supposed to.”

It occurs to me that I've been posting a lot lately about Simon being gay – as a character analysis kinda way, not because I care about him labeling himself (and also as a counter to him being understood as bi, if I'm completely honest). I still haven't gotten off the "Simon is some flavor of acespec" train. Still convinced you can read him that way, even in my rosebud boy (his type is not based on looks), an AU which makes me more confident in some reads I had of the trilogy.
For example, MRB confirm to us that Simon likes when Baz is mean to him. Is a turn on! (When the meaness doesn't touch genuinely sensitive areas). Which lead me to another thought: in the trilogy, Agatha is a fully realized character with a voice. In Simon's and Baz's POV, she can sometimes be less of person and more of a concept (she does the same with them in some ways). She's like a representation of feminine desirability. The prettiest girl to ever pretty etc. And they both say no. With both sex with her is used to say no.
The difference being that Baz thinks and Simon doesn't. Simon barrels through, he experiences things and then is left to process and figure it out long after it happened (or it's been happening). MRB simplifies it as: Simon's type is "better than me" – in theory, Agatha fits the bill. To me, that reinforces that Agatha is used to express that Simon is not into women, period. Simon doesn't like to think about abstract things, things that seem "unnecessary"/don't seem to be affecting him in the moment, even complicated things that are affecting him. It makes sense that he would begin to process (because he just started in awtwb! He still hasn't fully figure it out by SFC) by focusing on a person he does know and who is still in his life. In CO Simon tells you Agatha "likes being better than everyone else" – we know this is not a negative thing for him! And yet he says this in the context of describing what type of friend Agatha is. While saying they have only ever been friends (after 3 years of dating, this is what he says! Says it all really) Agatha being like this (a jerk) is likely part of why he was drawn to her, but he was never into her. In Agatha, this is not (sexually) attractive. In Baz, being a jerk is attractive. Baz being ruthless and good at the things he does is turn on! (In that vein, interesting that Simon tells you stuff like Agatha being good at things he's not interested in/not being good at things he is while losing his goddamn mind over Baz's competency)
MRB also makes me think about Simon's relationship with sex. He made out with a guy once. He made out. He didn't hookup. He did it once. It sounds like this is part of him experimenting and figuring things out. He says "I'm not an ink slut" in the classic "using denial as comedy" – not a slut in general, but focusing on the ink. Not people. He doesn't even tell you what they guy looked like and the highlight of the memory is free tattoo. Not the dude. The ink! Simon's horniness is directed to inks/tattoos, which is connected to Baz. All Horny Roads lead to Baz for Simon. In a universe where Simon's horniness is directed to a person, there is a Baz. It's a constant. He's truly a Baz-sexual.
I'm getting somewhere here, stay with me (or don't. I'm fairly sure people see the length of these posts and are like "bitch nobody has time for this"). Simon jokes about tracking down everyone who has seen him naked. The joke is not "I would track them down but who even remembers all of them" or something. He has more than a decade of dating. This list is likely not long. This list is manageable. When he talks about being dumped (because he's a mess, a dead end job, etc) it sounds like he was generally dating people who were interested in serious relationships. He was looking for companionship. Connection. (I mean, someone who's just interested in a dick appointment is unlikely to give a fuck about your future job prospects and all that.)
My point is: even without the acespec reading (but perhaps very supported by that), I think Simon is the type to not being comfortable having sex with strangers. He's not hookup material. Not for one night stands. "He doesn't think" "he's a horny dude" yeah sure, but barreling through to swap spit with a stranger is not really comparable to getting naked in front of them (and he's like "I made out once" as opposed to having "a reputation" of doing that kind of thing) There's a vulnerability and a trust there that I don't think Simon would be anywhere near comfortable with. He wants security. Stability. I think he would be the type to want to get into relationships before having sex. He would want to at least get a general vibe/idea of who the person is (and I don’t mean just a chat over dinner or something but like... at least a couple dates/encounters, y'know?). The more I think about it, the more I'm like... The Word of God could come into my house, manifest as a gun on my head, and I still would have trouble suspending my belief to... well, believe that Simon would be down to stick out his dick in front of a person he has never seen before/only just met.
Going back to Simon's type and looking for companionship: not to be a cliché but it's clear that Simon has been looking for Baz all his dating life. "This bitch is exactly my type" he says while noting he has never seen anyone more attractive. And then gradually losing his mind more and more over how attractive he is. He finds him more and more attractive the more he gets to know him! It's clear Simon is already attracted to/interested in him before Baz is even introduced – he has been stalking him for who knows long, he was out there trying to see his naked legs and tummy – they were both likely interested from day one in this AU. There was likely Attraction At First Sight here. But thinking about it (one of the funniest parts) when Baz is unbuttoning his shirt and Simon is like "hell yes, love this for me" you know Simon is down to fuck him (that cut before the ending, when Simon talks about tattooing Baz's name on his heart? Fellas: that's a post-sex scene. They fucked!) But also note that when it happens Simon already likes him. Simon already trusts him. He trust him with his body – literally. And when they kiss "this is it" – Simon tells us this is what he had been looking for! Baz is who he have been looking for.
Without Baz, Simon is a mess whose type is a version of Baz without genuine love and care. People who treat him like shit. With Baz, Simon is a mess who's loved and cherished and exactly where he wants to be. Simon kissing Baz like "this is it" is comparable to Simon kissing Baz is CO and thinking "finally I have you exactly where I want you." It's a constant with Simon: desiring Baz. Wanting to have him so badly, that when he finally gets his hands on him it marks a before and an after. It's monumental. It's everything Simon has ever wanted/been looking for. Him.

Again I'm still working on my COBB COMIC called The Gift Box and it's taking ages to finish. It's taking even longer because I have the flu. So again I'm gonna talk about quotes from the series that have kept me up at night.
This quote from Baz in AWTWB
Tumblr media
You and me both pal. One of the things that Rowell strongly implied/kinda just spelled out in the WS Annotated Playlist is that Simon suffered from "trauma, abuse and neglect" but neither she nor Simon go into details. I've poured through the text to get small glimpses of Simon's past but they are few and far between. I hope Simon works through this stuff in therapy but knowing his luck he'll end up running into the WOM equivalent of a dementor and just be retraumatized:(
Tumblr media Tumblr media
There is so much to unpack with these lines from Simon when talking about Penny and her ex. Has Simon experienced this or witnessed it? It's dark either way. He even tells Baz later that he's scared that Baz will get tired of him. This whole description is way to specific.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Simon going unresponsive is so dark to me. He gets overwhelmed to the point that he needs to mentally shut down is so messed up
Tumblr media
This is interesting cause Simon is basically saying he never really believed in Father Xmas cause believing in him involves a loving adult keeping up the fiction and clearly the homes did not do this and when they made an attempt Simon was already disillusioned. He couldn't believe. Sounds familiar huh?
Tumblr media Tumblr media
OK...what's with Simon's Basement thing? Where is this coming from? He brings it up twice in 2 different chapters. If this was any other character we'd get a whole explanation for this but since it's Simon he gives no context to this aversion, we just gotta take his word on this. He hates basements. I'm so curious as to whether this started with something that happened to him at Watford or before?
Tumblr media
Given how much innuendo is saturating this learning to drive scene, it precipitates the firm not gentle stance Simon will later take in regards to his physical relationship with Baz.
Tumblr media
The 'and more' part of that line is what's so interesting to me. First this whole thing gives me lady of the lake vibes from the Arthurian legends but also she is saying that Simon not only returned the magic he took but his own magic as well. In CO Baz and Penny talk theory about how Magic is based on a balance system. So Simon returning the magic to fill up the dead spots should eventually leave the magical atmosphere with a surplus this technically should be returned to Simon...so Smiths magic may not have affected Simon as it did others because magic itself is holding Simon's share in trust? Who knows but it's an interesting thought.

A Guide to My Tagging System
anything from before October 2022 may or may not adhere to these rules. i'm working my way through my old posts to catch them up but i am just one woman against a sea of cringe high school tumblr era me. and cringe high school tumblr era me is stronger than i remember. pray for me.
My Posts:
#mine - all of my original posts have this tag, regardless of content #my art - my art :) #my uquiz - my uquizzes #personal - anything to do with my real life #rant - i feel like this is self-explanatory #lesbian antics - me being gay (no homo)
Fandom:
#fanart - does what it says on the tin #theory - red string and pushpins #x spoilers - replace "x" with various fandom tags. i tag posts with spoilers pretty religiously* #x analysis - again, just replace "x" with whatever fandom you're looking for #spoiler free - posts that are completely (or as much as possible, anyway) free of spoilers about the series in general +more specific fandom tags that are explained below**
* i tag spoilers according to which book/season it's spoiling. for ex, if a series has 3 books and i post/reblog something that spoils the 2nd book, it would be tagged with #book 1 #book 1 spoilers #book 2 #book 2 spoilers #book 3 (except replace “book” with whatever tag i use for various books/seasons)
** the tags i use on my posts/reblogs are mostly for my own blog's navigation. i always use my own tagging system, but i also occasionally use several variations of popular tags (ex: the difference between tagging with series’ initials vs full words). sometimes i tag specific characters, sometimes just the fandom, it depends whether i'm feeling silly goofy quirky. never let them know your next move.
Locked Tomb ↓
#tlt - all of my posts about the Locked Tomb #gtn - posts about Gideon the Ninth (book 1) #htn - posts about Harrow the Ninth (book 2) #ntn - posts about Nona the Ninth (book 3) #atn - posts about Alecto the Ninth (book 4)
Arcane ↓
#arcane - all of my posts about Arcane (not League, I don't rlly care about League) #arcane s1 - posts about Arcane season 1
Simon Snow Trilogy ↓
#sst - all of my posts about the Simon Snow Trilogy #co - posts about Carry On (book 1) #ws - posts about Wayward Son (book 2) #awtwb - posts about Any Way the Wind Blows (book 3)
+ probably more in the future, i’ll update as needed :D

Welcome to episode infinity of Anna cannot depict metaphors or understand the meaning of creative writing choices:
Can anyone describe to me in immense and clear detail why Wayward son begins with an epilogue and More Importantly - ENDS with a prologue???
I honestly don’t get it- like maybe it is a reference to the end of Carry On? But that only explains the “epilogue” not the prologue.
Also the epilogue is in third person while the prologue is in first person. I just don’t understand and my autism brain is wired to the point where I cannot trust my own gut when it comes to metaphors. Also, I can point out minor details but can’t string them together.
@rainbowrowell I would love your reasoning behind this but also if anyone else has any thoughts please add them.

Ok.... I finished reading AWTWB, and beware of spoilers here: I have a theory. Like. A big far fetched Theory.
What if Agatha is the chosen one? Niamh says she saved Watford, the nymph called her "The Golden One" (which is a similar title to "The Chosen One" and also... Wasn't Simon often associated with the color gold?). She literally "saves" watford by saving the goats and tending to them while the whole mess was happening in the white chapel and an imposter was calling himself "The Chosen One".
The main plot of the book is how people are wrongly believing themselves to be Chosen One, and who better to be The Chosen One then Agatha, who calls it all bullshit and hates the fame that goes with it?
Ah!!! I don't know!!!!
