actually i talked about this w a friend a while ago but i think the whole acotar series couldve been improved sm more if all the fae were evil and fucked up and it was a silly little romcom instead of wtv the fuck sjm was going for
like imagine tamlin who has flowers growing over corpses in his garden 😋😋😋😍😍😍😍 or a rhys who makes stars to put in the sky after every kill he makes in another court (to cont a family tradition !!!) as a way to taunt every other lord... 🤩🤩 and they fall for this muscled runt of a woman who adds more bodies to both their collections. I mean like. itd still be better if it was sapphic. but still. this would improve the acotar series by a landslide
(also ending like iron widow's love interests :3c)

At the end of the day. Write what you like to write. Read what you like to read. Don’t write what you don’t like to write. Don’t read what you don’t like to read. And don’t attack someone because their own self indulgent writing isn’t catered to you specifically.

i’m gonna be honest the notion that jean paul/azrael are bad at detective work/skills annoys me. they're not BAD at it. they're not PATIENT enough for it and find it boring. because of this they seem bad at it, but actually being bad at it and not having patience for it have COMPLETELY different characterization implications, imo.
from batman: sword of azrael (1992) #3
(see above) from one of their very first appearances jean paul is shown to be very adept at problem solving and logical reasoning, both skills important in detective work. and this is with practically no experience, beyond what was implanted in the system.
i do understand where people get the idea that they're "bad" at detective work from--it is stated constantly throughout the knightfall saga that jp/az, and i do see most of these as azrael character moments, are bored by/don't like detective work. but i think it's very important to remember the context of those issues. they're in the middle of severe emotional and psychological dysregulation, and have less capacity for things like slowing down and doing detective work. but that doesn't mean they aren't able to, especially when they're not in active crisis. and this is proven throughout azrael: agent of the bat. jp and azrael are not absolute expert detectives, obviously, and they're still impatient and immature in a lot of their casework, and rush into situations before knowing all the details. but they still display a natural aptitude and skill in detective work, something that bruce wayne comments on in his own narration about jean paul/azrael!
also! according to the azrael secret file below, they were barely twenty-one during the events of SoA 1992! of course jp/azzy are impatient and immature sometimes!
azrael secret file from batman: no man's land secret files #1
i just think it's too easy to say that jean paul and azrael are bad detectives when, in my opinion, the majority of that evidence is taken out of context (knightfall saga and the fact that they were in the middle of a mental health crisis) and also doesn't acknowledge the fact that they are early to mid twenties AT THE MOST, with VERY little actual training in detective work. or in anything outside of being a brute force assassin only used to kill and send threats.
am i saying they're good at utilizing these skills and actually doing the detective work? no. but i think that just saying "they're bad at it" is an oversimplification that can lead to the development of mischaracterization, or at least unfaithful characterization, of jean paul and azrael

Effloresce Snippet
He kissed both her cheeks, bending even lower to raise Nesta’s right hand, pressing her cold knuckles to his brow in solemn salute.
“Nesta Archeron,” Jurian said, like her name was twice its length, a foreign weighted history, “You ready to know whose blood runs in your veins?”
Nesta, who had lived this particular conversation thrice over now, only shook her head. Touched between his brows in curious, only half-understood benediction, allowing him to step away. “Jurian. You survived the fires.”
His smile was only in his eyes, rainwater grey searingly bright. “You wouldn’t waste time sending messages to corpses.”
Nadia, from where she’d stopped three swaggering paces into the room, shedding her coat and swords with utterly false carelessness, huffed out a rough laugh. It was a bizarre comfort to see her, unchanged- strong brown hands dense with tattoos that bloomed into looser patterns up her arms, those knives and that hideous leather vest, remnants of a life that seemed nearly simple, now. So very far away.
She cast a scathing look at Nesta’s guard, the Illyrian busy visibly wishing murder upon Jurian, his entire focus held on the distance between their bodies.
“Protection has gotten more interesting,” she said, tone blithe, “Where’s your Vanserra?”
“Honeymoon.” Nesta let herself lean back onto the desk, hand behind her body biting into its ash lip. Dawn, Winter, reconnaissance. Elain walking underhill in mortal wedding pearls, Lucien at her back.
A heaved sigh, Jurian’s head oh so briefly dipped. “Wars and weddings, my lady. Blessings.”
“When you were our age, humans couldn’t marry.”
“Nor does he believe in any damned gods,” Nadia crossed the room fae quick, expression wicked as the guard flinched, stopping right alongside Nesta. A test, twofold- Nesta didn’t pull a knife as Nadia had once taught her, the legionnaire didn’t start in on violence without orders. “Don’t believe the prayers, unless they’re bloody.”

I’ve heard some things about the Bryce x Nesta x Azriel bonus chapter 👀🙊
what have you heard?? I read it, it's better - more substantive - than I hoped, gave us next to nothing for the ship war, though people are coming in with theories acting like a theory is a win (despite 95% of their previous theories being debunked already).
I am so looking forward to doing meta on Nesta and Azriel and their friendship and how they work together. Besides being proven right about multiple of my assumptions about HOFAS, their friendship is the best thing to come out of this book to me.
