Kiddads headcanons: (Lark and Sparrow)

Sparrow:

drinks red wine out of a coffee mug every morning.

Sometimes mixes in actual coffee with the wine (it's fucking disgusting and makes Lark gag)

Low-key kinda an alcoholic in the way that white upper-middle class suburban moms are

Still wears the friendship bracelet him and Lark made for each other as kids, along with a bunch of those beaded circle bracelets and the leather strappy ones.

Abso-fucking-LUTELY rockin' the 'Burks.

Still really likes art and painting but feels weirdly guilty about it so he only does it when everyone else is out of the house.

Has so many crystals it's a fire hazard. (Rocks rock!)

Keeps them right next to the Incense too.

Eats reeses peanut butter cups when he's really drunk and cries about how guilty he is cause they're not vegan as he is actively shoving them in his mouth. He never remembers this in the morning.

Actually, weirdly does not like weed. It makes him paranoid and he starts acting like Lark.

Took shrooms once as was convinced he had prophetic doodler dreams where he saw the end of the world.

He was convinced because it's true. That's literally exactly what happened.

Before he lost his love wolf powers, he got drunk and wandered around in wolf form until he got caught by the pound and Lark had to pay 30 bucks to get him back.

He read homestuck as a kid and LOVED jade but he grew up and ended up more like roses mom.

Both him and Lark watched gravity falls as kids and routinely argued over which twin they were.

Hero once told sparrow that his ponytail made him look like a dead anime mom and it mentally fucked him up for 2 day before he cut his hair down to his shoulders "just incase"

Sparrow doesn't have a favorite. he loves both his children equally. (its hero)

Sparrow believes in his heart that he's a bad father and thinks that Lark would do a better job than him (despite evidence to the contrary)

When Sparrow started doing yoga, both Lark and Henry had a heart attack cause he would do EXACTLY what barry did and start just yoga-ing mid-conversation.

Sparrow is still afraid of snakes.

Sparrow still has dreams about when Lark died in Oakvale, and it scares the shit out of him. Because of that moment, Sparrow is so afraid of Lark dying alone on a mission that it has gotten them into screaming matches because Lark refuses to stop going off on his own.

Sparrows favorite TV show actually IS the sunrise because it's been so long since he's seen it. He paints it a lot.

Sparrows second favorite TV show is gossip girl.

Sparrow thinks Harry Potter is stupid cause real spells are nothing like the Harry Potter ones.... but like.... he also owns a hufflepuff sweater.

If sparrow paints when he's blackout drunk he always ALWAYS paints the doodler. He burns the paintings cause they give him nightmares.

Sparrow feels like he, personally, is the reason the doodler was released. Because his drawing is what started the whole mess.

However, he feels like Henry is responsible for what Lark did.

Sparrow participated in heros training but he wasn't the main source of it. And he's the one who made Lark cut it off.

Sparrow has no idea if either of his kids are actually his. He asked both Rebecca and Lark if the timing lined up and they both just grimaced.

He played barbies with his kids when they were little and considered going to AA meetings after hero made the dad barbie get drunk at 3pm and fall asleep on the couch crying.

Sparrow has seen ALLLL the barbie movies #dadofadaughterthings

His favorite is Princess and the Pauper.

Sparrow was the one who set the school on fire. After he became a love wolf, he wrote a letter of "apology" to the school suggesting they make their classrooms less flammable.

Sparrows favorite kiddad (aside from lark) was Terry Jr. But he wasn't really all that close with him. it's like when you just observe someone from the outside and get invested. They still hung out tho. But both Lark and Sparrow are personally closest with Grant.

Sparrow is more afraid of Lark dying than he is of himself dying.

Lark:

For the longest time, Lark had pretty short hair, especially in comparison to sparrow who grows his out. But after code purple Lark stopped really caring about cutting it.

Lark bitched about normal never washing his mascot costume but Larks bomber jacket hasn't been washed since before normal's birth.

He smells like cigarette smoke all the time.

Lark drinks black coffee like normal people drink water. he drinks it hot when he can, but he also drinks it cold out of a fucking flask like a psychopath.

His ass never sleeps, or when he does its like 4 hours a night. he's constantly running on 14 cups of coffee and a prayer.

like and share if both you and your twin have ADDICTION ISSUES.

speaking of addictive shit, lark does not drink. he's too fuckin on edge to allow himself to be in a vulnerable position. especially since he has to willingly put his mind at the mercy of the doodler shit.

he did, however, smoke weed a lot with nick as teenagers.

Lark didn't get that moment of being absoultely alone in the world like sparrow did when he watched lark die, so lark literally just doesn't comprehend how much it would effect other people if he died. so he's an insensitive asshole about it.

He cares if he dies, but only in the sense that he feels he's the most capable of the kiddads of fighting the doodler and keeping everyone alive, and dying would inconvenience that.

He got arrested for trying to sneak a gun into hero's 1st grade classroom, quote, "in case of emergencies. its fine. she knows how to use it." unquote.

shockingly, this arguments was not taken well by the police.

Lark lives with sparrow because both of them are a fucking wreck without each other and they need that other half to stabilize them.

Lark knows a shit ton about the rocks on old earth from henry and he HATES that its legitimately helpful knowledge on the plane where its really easy to loose your mind and forget where you are and knowing the geology of the terrain really helps navigation.

He wore his glasses one time. for his drivers test. and has never worn them since.

He's is a really really good driver. he doesn't follow any of the traffic laws, but he's never gotten pulled over, and he'll get you places 3 hours early. He knows how to parallel park too its insane.

during one of the "camping trips" with hero, Lark pretended to be a bear to "keep her on her toes" and got shot in the shoulder.

His ass has like three prepper bunkers.

Lark is no longer afraid of snakes. (lie)

he's not a vegan anymore, and he'd never admit it, but Lark actually still prefers a lot of the "vegan substitute meats" that he ate as a kid.

Larks hair is curlier than sparrows because sparrow brushes his and makes it fluffy rather than curly, but Lark hasn't brushed his hair a day in his life.

Lark definitely has a favorite. its hero.

Larks least favorite of Normal's spouses is Lincoln (he slapped him that one time)

When he was alive, Lark and Terry Jr. had that awkward relationship of like "our friends are friends, but I don't really like you"

The main reason Lark grew out his beard, doesn't wear glasses, is all in an effort to not look like Henry. It mostly works until it doesn't.

Sparrow doesn't make that effort to avoid looking like their dad, and sometimes, he looks just like Henry. Especially when he's being kind and fatherly to hero and normal. Lark feels really bittersweet about it.

Lark knows that the doodler is his fault.

Sparrow has walked in on Lark trying to wrap up actively bleeding wounds in the bathroom in the middle of the night so many fucking times they have a jar for it now.

This is extra annoying to sparrow because sparrow HAS HEALING SPELLS. there is NO REASON for Lark to be actively staining the carpets with blood on his tromp through the house.

Lark is the main one who was training hero, the training was much much more brutal when sparrow wasn't there.

He's deffo the one who made her kill a deer with her bare hands.

Lark got the idea from batman to make contingency plans for if any of his friends turn on him. They're all 10 pages long. Sparrow found his and Lark had to make a whole new plan cause now that one was compromised.

Lark was bribed into playing barbies with the kids and then got yelled at by sparrow when he made his barbie kill all the other barbies.

Grant got prescribed anxiety meds, and Lark made a huge deal about them dulling your senses and instincts so he doesn't take them.

Lark should be on anxiety meds.

A Comparative Analysis of Hook’s Ship and Cabin in Popular Media Portrayals

Part 3: Steven Spielberg’s Hook

Not gonna lie—visually, Hook is one of my favorite versions of the character because both the captain himself and his living space are just so incredibly over-the-top with lots of attention to detail. The costuming and set designers really went all-out on this one.

Dustin Hoffman’s Hook has a ship like no other! His Jolly Roger leaves absolutely no doubt from the second you lay eyes on it that it is a pirate ship and throws all sense of practicality out the window in favor of lavish decadence fit for a king. From the outside, the cabin itself is reminiscent of a large skull wearing a bicorn hat with two large windows serving as the eyes. Perhaps most interestingly, the very center of the hat bears what appears to be a slightly altered version of the Eton crest with a skull and crossbones over it. This “knock-off” Eton crest (which was probably altered in the film for legal reasons) or one similar to it, shows up in multiple places inside the cabin as well.

If you look closely and zoom in on the two images above, you’ll notice one (not colored) crest over the piano, one on the desk, and one over the fireplace (which, by the way, does not seem practical on a wooden ship). Some other neat details I noticed in these shots include what looks like gramophones on the desk, images of fencing stances on the wall, and that the bottom of the bed which lowers down from the ceiling appears to be painted. I don’t know for certain but believe that the painting is meant to be this image used for promotional material but not ever actually visible in the film. Interestingly, it still features the hook on the right hand. Perhaps that’s why it was never shown in the film. If this godlike portrayal is how Hoffman’s Hook sees himself, it borders on pathological narcissism.

Back to the cabin itself… When the camera pans over to the other side of the room, we see another mock Eton crest in the background. In another, closer shot, we can clearly see the words “Good Form” over this one. This guy is Eton OBSESSED! (Which, to be fair, is pretty canon.)

We get a few more interesting views of the cabin in the scenes where Hook is attempting to teach Jack and Maggie. There is another self-portrait—though this one is a bit humbler and more realistic. Again, narcissist much? But what’s especially intriguing to me is the fact that if you zoom in close, you will notice that below the painting, there are black and white photographs. Now, so far, everything else about this Hook screams 17th century with the one odd exception of the gramophone(s) on his desk. But one might explain that away as something he picked up while visiting the outer world. But to have photographs would seem to imply that he (or someone he cares about) is from a much later time period. The one seems to be a photo of a young man (Perhaps Hook himself?) while the other is, I think, a couple (His parents? A younger Hook and his former love?). There is another black and white photo, too, that you can see in a shot behind Jack and Maggie that looks like it might be of a sports team… Might this be a team photo from his time at Eton? Unfortunately, without better quality close-ups on these images and input from the set director, there is no way to know for certain, but it certainly is intriguing…and it might explain Hook connecting with Jack over his love of sports.

Hoffman’s Hook is an enigma. His ship is unlike anything that sailed during the Golden Age of Piracy—far too gaudy and over-the-top, both inside and out, to be practical. And yet, there are details that no child would think to make up like the ever-present Eton crest and the black and white photographs. The clashing of time periods apparent in his wardrobe and personal effects lines up well with Barrie’s own conflicting information regarding Hook’s murky past, but it leaves us as the audience a little unsure what to make of this man. Perhaps, Hook and his ship are still the product of Peter’s imagination…but since Pan has grown up in this retelling, the details of Hook’s cabin have shifted to reveal the same larger than life character as imagined by an adult.

respond to the prompts out of character!

what made you pick up the current muse(s) you have? Obviously, I'm heavily influenced by a set list of characters I personally love, which means I come up with a take/portrayal as I delve deeper into the lore. I tend to have a preference for side characters, rather than protags or lore heavy ones, bc of the freedom I get... BUT at the same time I've had numerous muses that carry a lot of weight in their respective franchises (see: Seto Kaiba, Captain Rex, rival Barry, Richter Belmont and Sea Dragon Kanon just to name a few).

I mainly write as canon characters, I genuinely have little to no interest in making or RPing as an OC. At most, I have 1 OC in two out of the RPCs I'm currently part of. Which explains this huge disparity.

is there anything you don’t like to write? My hard nos are Incest, Adult/minor types of relationships. Bodily fluids/toilet stuff and fetish focused RPs. One-liners and really short replies aren't fun for me, sure, they can be fun for crack/joke interactions. But they won't last long. I really love working and expanding on the source material, so RPs for me really need to have that good plotting to back it up. While I'm totally open for exploring darker/taboo subjects (e.g.: adultery, toxic relationships, etc.), they MUST carry weight on the characters and be handled accordingly.

is there anything you really enjoy writing? GIMME ALL THE WEIRD COMBOS TO INTERACT WITH!!! Characters that never met or barely interacted with one another in canon but, they can interact in our RPs!!! My jam is doing worldbuilding and expanding on the source material!!! I also enjoy writing comedy, fluff, romance, slice-of-life, over-arching stories that connect/get refferenced in other threads.

how do you come up with headcanons? I look for plotholes or anything that was barely touched upon, in the source material, and I go off from it. I try establishing connections or make them clearer, to serve as future reference for me and my RP partners. I also love taking influence from other medias I'm into.

do you write in silence or do you play music? I used to be able to multitask a lot easier in the past. Now, I mainly prefer writing in silence. Only in very rare cases, I may play some kind of lo-fi beat or lounge music.

do you plan your replies or wing them? It depends on the thread in specific! Most of them have been plotted out, so I go off what we have laid out. Only in a few cases I try to wing it.

do you enjoy shipping? YES YES. GIMME. However, due to some bad experiences in the past, I'm really picky with platonic and familial stuff (popular fanons my beloathed).

We're All In This Together-Chapter 4

Fandom: Supergirl, Batman, Superman, The Flash

Characters: Kara Danvers, Clark Kent, Bruce Wayne, Barry Allen, Barbara Gordon, Leonard Snart, Mxyzptlk, John Stewart, Lois Lane, Jimmy Olsen

Summary: Kara, Clark, and Barry are taken off guard by a request by the imp Mxyzptlk: watch over and protect the children of their alternate selves from a different Earth. Will our heroes rise to the occasion?

Chapter 1, Chapter 2, Chapter 3

Mxy suddenly appeared in the middle of a den. He winced because everything was in shades of green from the walls to the furniture. The only thing that wasn’t green was white the door to enter and exit the room.

Mxy sighed and muttered, “Probably white so that a sane person knows how to leave the room without knocking themselves out. I know the Lanterns like green, but this is too much.”

Mxy shook his head while looking around until he found his targets. As he looked around, his face fell as he saw three sad children sitting on the couch with John in front of them talking.

Mxy sighed and muttered, “At least they are not crying full-fledged tears.”

Mxy shook his head as he walked towards the group. About two years ago, both John and Mxy had a sinking suspicion that this wouldn’t likely be their permanent home. The Green Lanterns weren’t making any ground with Superman and his clones. As much as they wanted to be in denial about that, John and Mxy agree that the kids need to be prepared to leave at a moment’s notice. That also meant figuring out a way to let them know the gravity of the situation without permanently scarring them for life. Since they turned three, they decided to keep the concept for them simple. They told them they were caretakers for them until they found them permanent homes with a parent(s). They told the children multiple times over the years so that they would not be blindsided. However, he should have known that they would be upset regardless. This was the only home they had ever known, and they were suddenly being taken away from it.

Mxy gave a soft smile as he knelt so he was at eye level with the children and asked, “Why do my favorite people in the world have such sad looks on their faces?”

Alura looked up with big round eyes and huge pout. Mxy would almost chuckle if it wasn’t such a serious situation.

It’s uncanny how she has Kara’s infamous pout down.

Alura said as her voice wavered, “It isn’t fair Uncle Mxy. We don’t want to leave.”

Jonathan looked up with teary eyes and said, “We would miss you guys too much.”

Mxy nearly winced at that statement.

He tried to force a smile and said, “We have had this conversation before that this was a place temporary for you guys until we find you a new home.”

Alura’s pout became more pronounced. Mxy was nearly startled. He didn’t she could get her pout to look so big.

“But we like it here better,” whined Alura.

Jonathan sniffled while wiping his eyes with his sleeves and asked, “Is it because I accidentally bumped into the vase and it fell? I said I was sorry. I tried to fix it but it kept falling apart.”

John kneeled down in front of Johnathan and gently grabbed his hand while rubbing smooth circles around it. He used his other hand to lift Jonathan’s face so they were staring eye to eye with each other.

John gave a soft smile and said, “You guys never did anything wrong. It isn’t safe for you to stay here. I would never forgive myself if something were to happen to you guys.”

Alura whimpered and said, “But the Green Lanterns are the greatest army ever.”

“Ultraman is coming,” said Nora softly.

Mxy and John looked at Nora startled. They have tried to keep the devastation caused by Superman (or Ultraman as he began to call himself this year) from them, but looking back Mxy realized that may have been unrealistic. There were other Green Lanterns and staff that the kids ran into throughout the day. He shouldn’t be surprised that the kids may have picked up on a few things.

Jonathan frowned and said, “Ultraman isn’t real. That is just a story to scare children.”

Nora turned to Johnathan terrified and said a little louder, “It is true. I heard some of the other Green Lanterns talking about it. Ultraman destroyed 30 of the Green Lantern’s rings.”

Alura looked up startled and said, “That can’t be true. The Green Lantern rings are supposed to be powerful.”

John sighed while rubbing the back of his head and said, “What Nora said is true. We are struggling to prevent Ultraman from reaching Oa. That is why we want to get you guys to a safe place.

Alura and Johnathan looked up at John terrified. Nora looked down while wringing her hands.

John scooped all of the kids in for a hug. The kids all embraced him tightly.

John said softly, “I don’t want you guys to worry. The rest of the Lanterns and I will be holding him and his army off while Mxy gets you to a safe location.”

“Will you come back for us when this is over?” mumbled Alura with tears streaming down her face.

John tried to keep a passive face but was struggling.

“No, my dear, you are going to your permanent home now.”

Mxy gave a soft smile and asked, “Do you guys remember that I told you that I was looking for a mommy and daddy to take care of you guys? You were all excited about having parents.”

“But that means losing you guys too,” said Nora softly while wringing her hands.

“We don’t want to go if it means not seeing you guys again,” wailed Jonathan.

John hugged them tighter and said, “I don’t want you guys to go either, but my priority is to keep you guys safe.”

Mxy embraced them all as well and said, “I know you guys won’t be able to see John again, but I will still be around with weekly check-ins.”

All three kids looked up at him surprised.

Mxy smirked and said, “You guys aren’t getting rid of me that easily.”

The children looked away sheepishly.

After a couple of minutes, Nora looked up thoughtfully and said, “Are the new parents nice?”

Mxy smiled and said, “They are the best. They are very kind and noble. And guess what?”

All the kids look up at him curiously.

“What?” asked Alura scratching her head.

Mxy leaned in lowered and whispered, “They are all superheroes.”

“Really?” squealed all three kids.

Mxy smiled and said, “Yes, they are their universe’s greatest defenders, and they are looking forward to meeting you all.”

“What kind of heroes are they?” asked Nora quizzically.

“Remember the stuffed animals that I gave you guys earlier?” asked Mxy.

The kids nodded.

“They are modeled after The Flash, Superman, and Supergirl,” said Mxy.

All of the kids looked at each other in awe.

Nerdy Pet Peeves

AKA things that people say about the Flash and the Rogues that bug me when found in supposedly-informative lists or videos.

"Barry/Wally is an inferior copy of Wally/Barry!" This one is usually just a lead-up to an internet flame war, and ignores that the two characters are both distinct, interesting, and likable in their own right. It's also just objectively not true (except when applied to adaptations, which have a bad habit of blending the two characters together). This isn't to say that people can't like one better than the other, or even dislike one, but to claim that either character is objectively unworthy of being the Flash/existing is a bit much.

"Barry was/is boring." I like Wally a lot (he is my favorite Flash, although by an extremely narrow margin), but I can't agree with people who claim that Barry is boring, or was boring before the retconned-in death of his mother. He wasn't. As white-bread as he seems, Silver/Bronze Age Barry Allen was a deeply weird individual. He had weird friends (like Albert Desmond, an ex-supervillain, and his 12-year-old neighbor), weird and dorky hobbies (collecting comics being the most notable), and did very weird things (like dressing up as a supervillain basically just to troll the Rogues, which @gorogues has some good scans of). He also has a solidly-written relationship with Iris (at least in the Bronze Age; not so much in the Silver Age) and actually has a number of really solid and emotional stories. I think a lot of the reputation Barry has as being boring stems from the fact that Cary Bates' run on the character, which did a lot to establish his more idiosyncratic character traits and emotional range, isn't published in reprints very often. As such, most modern fans don't know about Barry as he was written in that time period, and miss out on his more interesting character beats. Although I may be biased by the fact that I love Silver and Bronze Age comics.

"Captain Cold is a knock-off Mr. Freeze." Even setting aside the massive differences in their appearances, personalities, and backgrounds, Captain Cold debuted in 1957. Mr. Freeze didn't appear as Mr. Zero until 1959, and didn't become the Mr. Freeze most audiences are familiar with now until BTAS in the 1990s. So if anyone is a knock-off, it's Mr. Freeze, not Captain Cold (though the two are very distinct and I don't think either of them is a rip-off).

"Heat Wave is a knock-off Firefly." Again, the two are massively different in appearance, personality, and backstory, and, while Firefly does technically predate Heat Wave, he didn't start using a flamethrower until the early 1990s, at which point Heat Wave had been around---using his heat gun---for nearly 30 years. Before that, Firefly had light-based powers.

"Trickster is a second-rate Joker." Different powersets, different backstory, totally different personality, and different goals. Trickster is a barnum and a showman; Joker is a twisted comedian. Just because they're both vaguely humor-themed does not make them the same character.

"Heat Wave is boring/didn't age well." I've seen this opinion in a few different places, and it baffles me. Heat Wave is plenty interesting. He had a bit of a rough patch in the New 52, but other than that he's pretty consistently had good stories, his character has been firmly established, and his backstory is really interesting (and suitably grimdark for those people who think comics need to be "mature"). Is it just because his costume is mostly kind of monochrome? Or because his heat gun isn't as flashy as some of the other Rogues' weapons?

"Trickster is the Flash's Joker/a homicidal maniac." This one is basically entirely the fault of adaptations, which do keep turning the Trickster (specifically, James) into the Joker in all but name. In the comics, the Trickster is many things, but he is not a homicidal maniac. It's one of the things that separates him from the Joker. I love Mark Hamill (even as the Trickster), but he's not playing the Trickster from the comics, and it bothers me when people apply the traits of the TV Tricksters to their comic counterpart.

"Captain Boomerang is lame/stupid." Does it make total sense that a normal guy who throws boomerangs can fight the Flash? No. Does it matter? No. This is comics we're talking about; they're inherently kind of silly. That's what makes them so fun---and why Captain Boomerang is so great. Also, Digger is way more skilled, more deadly, and more ruthless than he gets credit for. He's actually one of the scariest Flash villains when his back is to the wall. @gorogues, you probably have some good scans of impressive Digger feats. Also, if you apply the logic used to judge Captain Boomerang as lame, then characters like the Joker are also, objectively, kind of lame.

"Ha ha ha, the Top spins! LOL! What a stupid villain." He has telekinetic powers and tried to blow up half the world in his first appearance. Plus, he's a ghost who can possess corpses, and can be downright terrifying when he wants to be. I don't know why people have such a hard time taking him seriously. It's not like his costume is that much weirder than Sinestro's. Or Lex Luthor's purple-and-green battle armor. Thankfully, this one does seem to have become less common than it used to be.

Similarly, "ha ha, the Golden Glider skates! That's silly!" In the Bronze Age, Lisa was the scariest Rogue of them all, and arguably came the closest to achieving her goals. The fact that she ice skates does not negate the fact that she was absolutely deadly, and would have fit right in with the darker modern era of comics. And her costume's not even silly looking! This opinion seems to have become less common of late, but unfortunately it has, in part, been replaced by....

"The Golden Glider is the nicest of the Rogues/nicer than her brother." This one is the fault of the comics themselves, since they've been writing her this way for about a decade at this point. So this one is less a criticism of people online and more a criticism of DC's writing decisions for the Golden Glider. Lisa is more than Captain Cold's cute little sister. She is capable of functioning on her own, and this perception of her as being nothing but generally cute and nice (and led into crime by her brother!) kneecaps her as an independent character. The fact that Cary Bates, who was writing during the 1970s and 1980s, is still Lisa's best writer is a little sad.

People who confuse/conflate Eobard Thawne and Hunter Zolomon, or describe Zolomon as though he's the version from the 2014 TV show rather than the more nuanced character from the comics. This happens more than it should, especially in lists and videos that are supposed to be explaining the Flash, and it just adds fuel to the fire that is people confusing them.

"The Rogues were lame until Geoff Johns started writing them." Geoff Johns was a great writer for the Rogues, and did develop a lot of their backstories, but the Rogues were just as great in the Silver and Bronze Ages, and Roscoe and Lisa were actually much better in that era than under Johns' pen (especially since Johns hated Roscoe). There are tons of good Rogues stories from earlier eras, and I think that they're vital to understanding the characters (especially poor Sam, who has had maybe three good stories since he was brought back to life in 2011).

"Captain Cold is the only Rogue that matters." This usually isn't stated precisely in this way, but I see this general sentiment quite frequently. This idea seems to assume that the Rogues are Len's henchmen, rather than his teammates, and therefore that they aren't interesting or important in their own right. Some of this can be laid at the feet of Geoff Johns, who really, really, really loved Len and seemed to not put as much time or effort into characterizing the other Rogues. I also think Joshua Willaimson's run was rather bad about this, as it portrayed Len as a pretty absolute, selfish leader and seemed to imply that the other Rogues were evil primarily because of his orders/influence. Even Johns' run didn't do that!

"The Rogues are only a threat to the Flash as a group." Again, this one can probably be attributed at least in part to the fact that most modern comic runs never show the Rogues operating independently, but historically they were all threatening and capable in their own right when fighting the Flash. Teaming up made them more threatening, but they were capable on their own.

"Sam (the first Mirror Master) is boring." This one is kind of true, but only if it's in reference to the post-Flashpoint version of the character. Pre-Flashpoint Sam, who also frequently gets called boring, was the most dynamic Rogue in the entire Pre-Crisis era, and was anything but boring. He was showy, cocky, dynamic, clever, and extremely entertaining. Silver/Bronze Age Mirror Master is the most fun you can have reading Pre-Crisis Flash.

People who confuse Evan and Sam, or Axel and James. Admittedly, DC hasn't been helping matters any by combining them into weird hybrids so much, but when writing an informative list about Sam, one should make sure that you're not including backstory elements than only apply to Evan, and that you're not attributing some of Evan's more violent activities, addictions, or eldritch powers to Sam. Similarly, when talking about the Trickster, make sure that you don't give Axel's backstory to James (or vice versa).

"The Rogues are lame/joke villains/aren't capable of fighting the Flash." This opinion isn't nearly as common as it once was, but it still pops up from time to time. It's as though the Rogues' costumes and names are preventing people from realizing that they're very capable combatants.

Duke Thomas - who’s surprised 😭 no but he’s without a doubt my fave bat. i think there are just so many inspiring things about him, and he represents the aspect of comics I love most - stepping up and doing what’s right even when all odds are against you

Carol Ferris - I used to talk about her 24/7 when I was heavy in my GL phase, but I never stopped loving her. I love that she’s deeply flawed and angry and passionate, and she gets to be messy. Also she influenced me to be more comfortable expressing myself femininely which was hard as a brown girl ngl anyways carol <333

Ollie Queen - LMAO idk why but I feel so cliche putting him, but he’s my favorite Arrow and he always has been. I relate to him a lot. He’s really introverted, in his own head despite being is outspoken, he loves nature, cares deeply, and he isolates when he’s sad. I also like his very black-and-white thinking, esp when it gets challenged. live laugh love ollie queen

Khalid Nassour - it’s hell being his fan, but i’ll do it anyways 😭 so Khalid is rlly interesting bc i read his “cool” appearances first then read Dr Fate 2015 where he was more of an annoying 22 yr old. And it was so satisfying watching him grow from someone who was more narrow-minded and whitewashed to an intelligent, capable, and enlightened person. I really enjoy his character’s spin on what fate means in regards to one’s identity, heritage, lifestyle, and faith.

Top 5 comic series (THIS IS ALSO HARD OMG)

Day of Vengeance - this is the one currently living rent free in my head rn bc it’s so FUNNY and random, but also a really interesting storyline in regards to magic in the DCU. It’s just so enjoyable watching this group of mystics handle the hugest threat ever and barely get along, and they’re all weird, and then Lori joins and she’s like the group teenager and it’s so funny

We Are Robin - I honestly wish it was longer ngl but I really wanted to see more of the group together and their stories, especially Izzy and Dre. The premise and duration of this story is SO dear to me bc ofc Duke, but also I love watching kids band together against authorities bc they love their city sm.

Batman: Son of the Demon - as a Talia and sometimes Brutalia fan, how can I not 😭 It’s so sad and actually heartwrenching how happiness was so close to them but taken away, and how much Bruce and Talia sacrificed for each other because they are both loving people, they just love in the wrong way

Green Arrow: The Longbow Hunters - perfect Ollie. Perfect depiction of his mind. Really good storytelling. SHADOOOOO she served cunt and dc didn’t like that so they ruined her. Green Lantern: Blackest Night - OKAY THIS IS THE ONE I WAS AFRAID OF SHARING 😭 I’m SORRY i love this for so many reasons, nostalgia mostly bc I re-read it over and over again at the peak of my hal obsession era idk why, I like the giant white entity, I like when all the Corps leaders have to team up and they’re all side-eyeing each other sm, and I also love when random heroes get involved and help save the day like Mera, Ray, Barry, Diana, Grant, watching them all try to survive it while battling grief in front of them. So this is a lil oneshot with a drool-worthy Hispanic James that Regulus does indeed drool over, so I speak the truth. Highly reccomend, though fair warning, James may (will) make you blush (+ supportive slytherin skittles)

The thought crossed his mind that Regulus would be nice to kiss, what with his girly lips and all, at the same time he thought about purpling the pale skin around his eyes.

“What, are you going to make me?” Suddenly, James’ mind was made up.

If Regulus wanted to play, he’d play.

This is a series with eight parts (the second one is my personal favorite), it takes place during Hogwarts years in which Regulus is appointed James' potions tutor so he can go to Slughorn's party and impress Lily. It starts out with a lot of smut (*THIS IS A SMUTTY SERIES*), but it actually gains a lot of emotional and romantic substance

Drugs and surgical scrubs: anauro

James was fairly certain nothing could ever come close to heroin, absolutely nothing, but Regulus Black wasn’t far off.

Medical AU fic set in modern London, where Regulus is a doctor and Marauders are drug addicts. Rated mature for addiction (including implied underage use and overdoses) and mental health illness themes. Chapters 20+ contain smut. All characters are adults.

Eventual James/Regulus, where it is James that needs saving.

This. THIS. I don't even have the words to describe how amazing THIS is to you. And no, it's not finished yet, but it doesn't NEED to be finished, because it is stunning. It's primary ship is jegulus and it's done perfectly, but there's some horny background wolfstar and technically background rosekiller... but if you want rosekiller I recommend:

Curiosity killed the cat (what Evan and Barty did that night): anauro

As his best friend of eight years, Barty knows exactly how to heal Evan’s broken heart.

This is meant to be read after ch18 of Drugs and surgical scrubs and is the accompanying piece, explaining what Evan and Barty did whilst James and Regulus played boardgames.

Having said that, it will also work as pwp if all you’re looking for is some smut!

As the summary implies, this rosekiller oneshot goes along what the previous fic, but it can be read on it's own too! It's smut. Very hot smut. Might wanna turn on a fan before reading this one 😘

I Stayed There: stoned_regulus

“I can’t lose you again.” & “Don’t raise your fucking voice at me.” + Rosekiller

It’s like he’s been transported back in time to that place he tends to haunt when he’s left alone with nothing but his thoughts. When Evan told Barty he’d found someone. When he told Barty he was happy. When Evan left him there in that restaurant. When Barty realized he’d been living in a fantasy of his own design thinking the boy he’d loved, loved him back.

I went on such a journey to re-find this, but I remembered it so fondly that I knew I had to. This is another rosekiller oneshot with some past love-lost angst, but they meet again at a party! I know there's background jegulus and maybe some other ships that I can't remember right now... but still worth a read!

hmmm.... lets see. this is going to be a funny set of answers because im not a film buff but i DO watch a lot of weird films none of which i can list here.... but i'll see if i can give a good "top 5" ranking.

1- Judas and the Black Messiah (2021, dir. Shaka King)

Just genuinely one of my fav movies of the past couple years. Rlly introduced me to having the slightest celeb crush on Daniel Kaluuya (I hadn't watched Nope at the time lmao). I rewatch this religiously at least once a year.

2- When It Rains (1995, Charles Burnett)

I got so fucked up & emotional after this film that I had a whole big dramatic Mitski-themed breakdown in a shower. And I never do that shit. this is a really personal pick and it probably won't resonate with everybody the same way lol. it's half nostalgia and half really beautiful filmmaking that puts the movie at #2.

3- The Big Short (2015, Adam Mckay)

I haven't rewatched in a while, maybe this movie isnt as funny anymore as it used to be, but a pretty great &compelling twist on the "sarcastic tongue in cheek white guy biopic" genre. blew me away when i first watched it lol.

4- Nope (2022, Jordan Peele)

Film school bait.... sorry..... also yeah ANOTHER daniel kaluuya movie i just ran out of movies . i don't watch anything. Ever . nope is good and it scares me every time for like . the next day after i watch it bc hollywood is so scary. i H8 california

5- Addams Family Values (1993, Barry Sonnenfield)

💛: What is a popular ship you just can't get behind, and why?

Coldflash (Barry Allen/Leonard Snart). Idk, it has all the ingredients of a ship that I really should be into, but I'm just... not. I think it's just that they're that really specific brand of "friendly rivals" that doesn't really excite me that much.

💚: What does everyone else get wrong about your favorite character?

It's apparently really hard to "get" Nora West-Allen's character if you didn't grow up in a single-parent household, never meeting your other parent. A lot of people say that she overreacted or that she was being irrational in her actions to try to save her dad from dying. Yeah, she did make some bad decisions, but she just wanted to know her dad. She just wanted to get to know him, because she had a frankly terrible life and she thought that maybe, if he was around, things could be better. Idk I have a lot of thoughts about her but she deserves her own post.

Caitlin Snow. Because she's the token white woman of the main cast, a lot of people seem to uwu-ify her and make her into someone who can do no wrong. Really, Caitlin has willingly worked with a human trafficker and hid the fact that she had a murderous alternate personality from people who could help her with it, and the people who were put in danger because of it, for a really long time.

💔: If you had to remove one major character from the series, who would you choose?

Cecile Horton. Idk, she just bores me. She's an interesting character in the earlier seasons, but later on, her personality is just filed down to "empath".

They all seem like they're some flavor of LGBT+. However, with Caitlin Snow, people often headcanon her as bi or pan, but I see her as a-spec.

Obikin. Even though I'm aware that they're both adults when most people ship it, I'm just not a huge fan of the power imbalance in there. It gives me this feeling of visceral disgust, and if I see it untagged that gets an instant block from me. Ship and let ship, I'm not going to give someone hate if they ship it, but that ship kinda grosses me out.

💚: What does everyone else get wrong about your favorite character?

REVA WAS A CHILD!!! SHE WAS A CHILD SUCKED INTO A BRUTAL CULT AND NO ONE WAS THERE FOR HER!!!! YES SHE DID BAD THINGS BUT THAT DOES NOT MAKE HER A BAD PERSON! SHE WAS TRYING TO SURVIVE!!!! (also she's honestly one of the best most compelling characters that Star Wars has put out since the Clone Wars ended and anyone who says otherwise clearly doesn't understand her character)

Padme. Again, sad dead white woman can do no wrong. She was ready to stay with Anakin, to try to bring him back to the light, even after finding out that he murdered his friends and massacred children.

Kylo Ren. He really could have been interesting! He had so much potential! I was peak Reylo trash back when TLJ came out, but now? He got boring. There was potential there, but they just made him a generic conflicted sad bad boy.

General Hux. While I have enjoyed a few Huxlo fics in my time, I don't really see him as liking men, or he's just around the wrong type of men. MAYBE he'd be Bi with a very strong preference for women, a 0.1 on the Kinsey Scale, but I don't see him as being anything more than that.

top 10 pokemon characters/story arcs?

Hi! Sorry this response is coming a little late. I can take a bit to answer asks, but I swear in general I will get around to them. Life's just been hectic.

To answer your question, though (And assuming this only applies to mainline Pokemon— I'll do everyone a favor and spare you from hearing me talk about my feelings on PMD characters... unless people WANT to hear about those too?)

As a note, this is within the context of how well developed I think their characters/story were, so it's not in the order of my favorites in general. That would vary slightly. For example: I love Raifort, but her ass does NOT have that much going on. I'd also put Volo much higher up than I did on this list.

1 - N - Honestly, I had a lot of trouble deciding whether he or Lillie deserved first place. They're more or less a tie in my book. I think they both had character arcs handled extremely well in different ways. I ultimately opted for giving N this slot because I think BW is just the more thematically rich game as a whole, but I do love Lillie. N is just so fantastic, though. I love his arc as well as the different facets of his personality. He was the first character that was ever truly a "blorbo" in a fandom sense to me and with good reason. I would take Ibuprofen with him any day.

2 - Lillie - Like I said, Lillie almost made first place. I really do love her. I think her arc about learning to stand up for herself and generally carve out her identity as an abused child is extremely well done. She is my FRIEND and it made me VERY SAD when she left at the end of the game. I hope everyone who complains about Sun & Moon's story without ever having actually bothered to engage with it blows up forever.

3 - Arven - Say what you will about Scarlet and Violet- they're buggy, rushed games, but their story slaps. I think Arven's arc and the general way he's characterized is super well done. Although that goes for all of the ScarVi cast! I think they're just sincerely good characters. Blowing up everyone who didn't pay attention to the story then had the audacity to complain about it being bad with my mind here as well. [This is malice directed specifically towards Alpharad for his read on Penny, but don't tell anyone that]

4 - Silver - Silver's interesting in that he comes from a time when Pokemon character arcs weren't super defined but he has such a solid one, so he really stands out! I love him learning to open up, trust, and love his Pokemon and think the way that story is told organically through elements such as his Golbat finally evolving is wonderful. His Pokemas event with Ho-Oh made me cry.

5 & 6 - Cheren and Bianca - I feel weird separating these two because of the way their arcs parallel each other, so they're going together. They really do exemplify the way that Black and White were sincerely well-written games and I love their individual stories as well as the way they play into the themes of the overarching story as a whole.

7 - Cyrus - What a character. Cyrus is well and truly one of the most offputting yet interesting characters in the entire series. His nihilistic outlook burying what little he does seem to sincerely care about is so fascinating, and his backstory easily gives him even more depth. He's just this guy who's like... sincerely mentally unwell, and not in a cartoon villain way. He has legit psychological issues. I would love to study him under a microscope.

8 - Volo - This guy's one of my favorite Pokemon characters, but even I've gotta admit he doesn't actually have that much going on. I feel like so much of what I like about him just came from my head. That said, he has a fun charisma about him, even in canon, and I loved getting stabbed in the back. Please stab me in the back more, GameFreak. ([A flying ice-cream truck appears over my head, a la SpongeBob] IN THE STORY! PLEASE DON'T STAB ME IN THE BACK BY MAKING DISAPPOINTING GAMES...)

9 - Barry - Yet another fantastic character from gen 4. I love him realizing he needs to actually take some things seriously and the way he grapples with his failure to protect the Pokemon of the lake. For the third time in this post I'm blowing people up with my mind, specifically the people who just see him as annoying and loud and don't pay attention to the way he changes over the course of the game. ADHD king.

10 - Bede - Tbh... I don't know if Bede actually deserves to be on this list. I think it's probably a little offensive to put any SWSH character on this list. But truth is... I just like him! Even if it was ostensibly poorly executed, I'm a complete sucker for the "spoiled brat gets smacked in the face by reality and has to learn some goddamn humility" trope, and he embodies it well. I also like how ultimately he finds himself and his place in the world through embracing things stereotypically associated with femininity :) I simply think it's nice.

Maurice - Chapter 2

Warning: Maurice Spoilers (mostly for the book)

Named Characters Description:

Maurice- same age as chapter 1

Mrs. Hall- Maurice’s mother, very doting mother in this chapter

Ada Hall- oldest younger sister, adores Maurice to the point of “worshiping” him

Kitty Hall- youngest sister, likes Maurice but does not “worship” him in the same way Ada does, is described by Dr. Barry as having “hints of grit” in her.

George- one of the servants hired by the Halls, he has left to “better himself” when Maurice comes home from school

Mr and Mrs. Howell- servants employed by the Halls, Mr. Howell is a coachman

Dr. Barry- old family friend, his favorite Hall is Kitty due to her slightly different personality from the rest of the Halls

Slight side note: Literally why has no one written fanfic about Kitty that isn’t focused around Maurice? Literally two chapters in and there’s already so much potential for her character??? There’s some Kitty/Violet fics on AO3, but all of them still have focus on Maurice (fair enough with him being the title character but still).

Points of Note:

The Halls are essentially the 1910’s version of your white nuclear suburban family. Like Forester goes through a lot of effort to insist how painfully average the Halls are. Kitty is the only one who stands out amongst them, but that isn’t much of an accomplishment considering how boring they’re described as.

Maurice is compared to his father even more in this chapter. It comes up four times from three separate conversations (Mrs. Hall, Mr and Mrs Howell, and Dr. Barry). Once again, this is not in a ‘he’ll be a great success’ way; but in a ‘he’ll be just as plain and boring’ kind of way.

George is arguably Maurice’s first childhood love. Though we get very little description of George, I’ve come to the conclusion that Alec and George are parallels. There’s something hauntingly similar between the two and as we go on with the summary I’ll go more in depth.

Summary:

This chapter starts with Maurice coming home from school. He’s greeted by his sisters and mother who all dote on him and welcome him home. While walking the garden with his mother, he asks where George is. His mother ignores this at first to tell him,

“Such a splendid report from Mr. Abrahams. He says you remind him of your poor father…” (Pg. 17)

After a bit more talking (mostly about vegetables) Maurice asks again about George. His mother lies to him and tells him that George had gotten too old and was given notice (basically laid off/fired) from Mr. Howell. She then changes subject to what they should do while Maurice is home and about how proud she is about him going to the same public school as his father.

“(...) you see, your father was at his school too, and we are sending you to your father’s old public school too- Sunnington- in order that you may grow up like your dear father in every way.” (Pg. 17)

Maurice then begins to cry. When asked why by his mother, Maurice claims he doesn’t know why he’s crying. However, we can assume it’s probably because George is gone. Though when his sisters ask why Maurice is crying, his mother claims that he is tired and he agrees. After this he plays Halma with his sisters (a board game that’s kinda like checkers but a bit more complicated) and then runs out to Mr. Howell to ask about George. It’s here that he learns the truth.

According to Mr. Howell, George left on his accord to better himself (cough cough foreshadowing cough cough). Maurice then makes a rude and snobbish comment to Mr and Mrs. Howell and runs off in true shithead kid fashion. Once again, he’s compared to his father.

Dr. Barry and his wife stop by to join the Halls for dinner. He also sees the Halls as plain and somewhat boring but he’s nicer about it. This is where we get this interesting quote though,

“Kitty he liked- she had hints of grit in her- but the girls were in bed, and he told his wife afterwards that Maurice ought to have been there too. ‘And stop there all his life. As he will. Like his father. What is the use of such people?’ ” (Pg. 19)

Basically saying, Maurice is as boring and unremarkable as his father he might as well just went to bed instead of joining the adults for their dinner. I think he also just called Maurice useless which is such a harsh thing to say about a fourteen year old like damn.

When Maurice does go to bed, we get a scene with him arranging the candle so the light doesn't cast shadows into the mirror. As mentioned in the previous chapter, young Maurice is scared of the dark. In this chapter we learn that it isn’t so much darkness as it is the odd shadows that are cast against the ceiling and walls by low light.

In his fear of the dark he calls out for George (cough cough foreshadowing cough cough). Maurice questions his own actions (essentially: why should he care about some servant???) and then he falls asleep.

River’s Extra Notes:

So when I read this chapter, all I really thought of George was that he was Maurice’s first crush. But as I was writing this review I had a little light bulb moment as I was looking over the chapter. George is Alec. Alec is foreshadowed from the very beginning and it drives me batshit insane. I didn’t make the connection the first or second time reading the book, but the third times’ the charm I guess. George and Alec are both working class men who move onto another job to better themselves. Maurice, in the darkness/in his darkest moments, calls out for them. Alec answers the call, George does not.

(Maybe I’m the last to figure this out and now I just look stupid lmao.)

Anyways, I wrote this instead of studying and now my brain will be going feral for the rest of the day. Feel free to tell me I’m wrong about anything honestly.

oh wow that's so sweet 🥺

SOA is my favorite show and I'm constantly re-watching it, and rafebarry is my favourite ship so they just naturally overlapped in my mind when I was writing about Rafe, Topper and Kelce's dynamic. In fanfiction it's whatever we make it, but he's pretty alone in canon, besides Barry.

So I started imagining what it would be like if he had people all his own, not ones that wanted to get with his sister or wanted his money or wanted his compliance, etc. that he would constantly have to worry about losing. My original rafebarry SOA AU was about Rafe running away to the south side to hide from Ward and being picked up by the scruff of the neck like the lost little kitten he is by Gemma, who loses her shit at a boy a couple years younger than her own being mistreated and well, Clay goes to have a chat with Ward. I never finished it but the idea was Rafe would grow straight into SAMCRO alongside Jax, who was like a big brother. I think under Gemma and Clay he would've been a completely different person, I mean imagine how far Rafe could go with a father (figure) telling him how proud he is of him. In this scenario I wasn't sure which direction to take Barry, though.. I considered making him a Mayan but they aren't as lax with their rules as the Sons, so I don't think that would work. Like I think the Sons would allow Rafe to live quietly with his roommate Barry but other MCs wouldn't. Just my piece.

I gave up on that story and started working on Delicate after listening to White Buffalo - House of the Rising Son from season 4, which screamed SOA Rafe to me. I won't bore you by picking apart all the lyrics but "my sweetheart, he's a rambler. Lord, he rides an old machine." stuck with me, especially because it's sung by another man.

I wasn't sure about the story at first but it was exciting thinking about Barry and Rafe seeing eachother after all those years, so much tension between them that they have no choice but to keep distance or they'll lose it, end up fighting or whatever. They haven't even bumped shoulders or brushed hands or knocked knees. But then Barry's on break getting lunch at some hole in the wall sandwich shop and there's Rafe and some big, scary-ass biker talking and then biker guy leans in and kisses Rafe's temple?! Cradles Rafe's face?! And then all the scenarios I could throw them into; lockdown at the clubhouse is my fav!! just the idea of Barry being holed up with all the Sons families, having no clue what's going on but not being allowed to leave is so 😋😋 like he gets bossed around by rafe a lot in delicate and I actually love it where usually I prefer it the other way around, badass biker Rafe is just different. but also a fundraiser at Barry's garage because his coworkers mom needs treatment and Rafe has the Sons show out for it, which is all fine and cool but there's a girl all over Barry, so Rafe stands off to the side with a scowl while Happy & Tiggy talk about how they'd love to help solve the problem. There were so many outlandish positions I felt comfortable writing them into in this AU which was so fun and refreshing.

It was also a way to work out my own feelings towards Barry's betrayal and the alternative route the show could've taken, where Rafe does time for his crime (despite getting out early, obviously, but that's solely based off being in the MC) and has to deal with how he feels afterwards, about what happened between them and about Barry in general, dodging his father and his past at the same time. While also working out my feelings for SOA, putting my observations into Rafe so I can flesh them out properly, like how significant some of the losses were or how unfair their lives are or the downfall of certain characters.
