Tea Snob Meets Pretentious Tea

So, at the office we have this fancy beverage-making machine. It does lattes, espresso, tea, hot chocolate, hot water, whatever. I don’t really use it because I have my own supply of loose leaf tea (because I’m a snob like that. So sue me; my family’s English). I use the machine when it’s a bad day and I don’t have time to brew my own pot of tea and then clean up afterwards.

Anyway, we have a new office administrator, and she’s getting us a new machine that uses fresh-ground coffee beans instead of the packets. That’s great for the coffee people. For the tea people, she’s decided that what we would prefer is...tea bags. Forgive her. She’s a good woman. She means well, and she doesn’t know any better. To be completely fair to her, I asked if we would still have jasmine green tea (because that’s what I drink from the machine on the bad days when I use the machine), and she made sure to order jasmine green tea bags. She has acted in good faith, and the other tea drinkers at the office aren’t snobs, so I’m over it. I mean, I’m going to be drinking my own loose leaf tea ninety-five percent of the time anyway.

Today, however, the bottled water I was drinking tasted off. I think I got a bad batch or something. Today was also one of the bad days when I didn’t have time to brew tea and then clean up the pot, filter, cup, and saucer afterwards. So I got to try all of the new tea bags. It was fine. It wasn’t fantastic. It wasn’t the worst thing ever. It was fine.

Most of the tea bags were of a mediocre brand that I’d had before, but we had two varieties by Tazo. I picked up the bag of Tazo English Breakfast, and I was looking at it like, “What is this?” (You know. Like a snob, with my nose held aloft. As one does.) Then, I noticed the French translation below the English description of the tea. I was highly amused. ^.^ I literally started snickering out loud in the kitchen, thinking, “Wow. How pretentious! Nice, Tazo. I like your style. I approve”. (Incidentally, this is also the thing I love about Godiva truffles. I love reading the French descriptions that they include on the insert card telling you about the chocolates. It’s great language study. You learn a lot of overblown adjectives for all of your purple prose needs.)

The Tazo English Breakfast was mediocre, but the Berryblossom White was actually good. I liked that they had the ideal temperatures for brewing the tea on the back along with the time. That’s legit. I think I’ll get along with Tazo on the bad days when I don’t have time to brew loose leaf but still want tea.

Go ahead and laugh. I am fully aware that I am ridiculous. I have accepted this about myself, and I am at peace with it. :P
