Random Kaplan family headcanons (P1 of ?)
~~~~
Jeff and Rebecca met at the age of twenty-five. Rebecca's brother and Jeff's sister were put together by a matchmaker and decided to try and introduce the two families.
All of their sons are named after playwrights (William Shakespeare=William (Billy) Kaplan, Eugene O'Neill=Eugene (Gene) Kaplan, Samuel Beckett=Beckett Kaplan)
Billy is the oldest (nineteen), Gene is the middle child (seventeen), and Beckett is the youngest (fourteen).
Gene and Beckett are also mutants, but Eugene doesn't use his powers, and Beckett's haven't activated yet.
Jeff and Rebecca legally adopted Tommy when he was seventeen
Jeff has undiagnosed Autism. He and Rebecca agreed not to get a professional diagnosis.
Beckett is Autistic and has ADHD, Gene has dyslexia and Billy has dyspraxia and have all been diagnosed.
Gene is obsessed with dreams and sleep (like, he wants to study it at university and stuff)
Tommy likes arts and crafts and often makes bookmarks and gives them to friends as gifts. He doesn't like using hot glue guns, though.
Jeff knits to relieve stress and to keep his hands steady.
Gene does knitting and crochet, and Beckett does embroidery.
Rebecca calls herself Dr. Rebecca Oure-Klum (her maiden name) to her patients. And Jeff just tells them to call him Jeff.
Billy, Beckett, and Gene used to have a massive Minecraft world that they played on together, but now only Beckett plays on it.
Gene goes to a private boarding school for high achieving students.
Everyone at Beckett's school avoids him because of Billy and the John Kessler thing.
Beckett posts superhero fanfiction online (but never includes The Young Avengers because to him, that's weird). Jeff and Rebecca support it because they think fanfiction and fanart are healthy ways for teenagers to explore gender, sexuality and creativity; they do not read them, though, Gene does and occasionally does fanart for Beckett's fics, but keep them on the down low.
Gene has a crush on Marvel Girl (Jean Grey, not Rachel). Beckett has a crush on Iceman, Spider-Man, and Human Torch.
Jeff and Rebecca made a swear jar for English swears, a swear jar for Yiddish swears, a swear jar for Hebrew swears, and a swear jar for made up language swears. They have over 5,000 dollars in them.
Gene once got Northstars autograph. He also once got Jean-Paul Beaubier's autograph. So far, he's the only person to have figured out his identity by himself.
They live next door to William and Madeline Drake.
The reason Gene and Becket weren’t home when Mother took over is because they were both on multiday field trips to Xaviers School for Gifted Youngsters.
Gene cries when dogs die in movies. A Dogs Journey broke him.
Like Billy, Jeff sleep talks. A lot. Mainly about the structure of a heart and different heart conditions. Often about Rebecca.
Gotta love Tommy Shepherd, he's got like four sets of parental figures that could care about him but he either feels awkward around them or they just apparently forgot he exists. Like the only semi ok adult in his life is Master Pandemonium, who he's taking care of but he at least interacts with him.
Unsure if anyone will see this or any of my followers read the marvel comics but i just keep thinking about Vision and how this man-android hasn’t produced a single straight child (in a manner of speaking).
His first marriage: Billy and Tommy with Wanda. Neither of these guys are straight. Billy is gay and married to his space prince alien husband. Tommy is bisexual and in a relationship with an X-man.
His second marriage: 2 kids, daughter and son. Unfortunately we will never know about the son but Vivian Vision is a big ol lesbian.
Dude cannot make straight kids, and I love it.
happy mother's day to rebecca kaplan who housed FIVE young boys at one point, three of which were her actual sons, as well as as her son's boyfriend who would later become her son-in-law, and her son's long lost twin brother who isn't technically her son but I'm sure she treated him like one.
often forgotten by marvel fans who will claim that wanda is billy and tommy's only mother. underappreciated but beloved by those who know <33333
an incomplete list of sibling dynamics that make me ill (and why):
hazel levesque, nico and bianca di angelo
nico being so dependent on bianca only to loose her because she was so emotionally tired of looking after a child when she was a child too, that despite her loving him, she just couldn't look after him like that anymore. And then nico finding hazel and using her to fill that empty space inside him and later desperately trying to separate bianca and hazel into their own people after he used hazel as a replacement, while trying not to make hazel feel inadequate but she already knows that she'll never be what nicos looking for and fjlgflsjkhsfjkd
carys and aled last
carys leaving aled thinking he'll be okay because he was always the good one and exactly what carol (the mother) wanted but unknowingly condemning him to a life he hates because she didn't realize he felt like that. And aled loving carys despite knowing that theoretically he should resent her. And him writing to her knowing she will never read it.
tori, charlie and oliver spring
tori struggling silently because she doesn't know how to ask for help and thinking its normal. and charlie struggling silently because he doesn't want to ask for help because it feels like a burden and being noticed and getting help but still feeling like that. and oliver sitting their silently wondering why his older siblings look so sad all the time. (also this quote: 'She doesn’t move. How many times have we sat here next to each other like this?' and everything about this winter.)
tommy shepherd and billy kaplan (comics)
them being born brothers only to be torn apart (quite literally) and billy being born back into a family that is loving and happy and tommy not getting that same privilege and them reconnecting and billy not feeling for tommy the same way tommy feels for him because billy already has brothers and tommy trying to reconnect only to never have the efforts reciprocated and then being ostracized from his first (AND ONL) group of friends and billy doing nothing djghslakjg (i would like to thank the fandom for taking these two away from the writers and fixing their relationship through communication.)
alisa montagova and roma montagov
them only having each other in amongst the rest of the white flowers, but roma has benmars so they don't only have eachother really. and alisa being younger so there's always that bridge they can't cross. and then roma dying, but not dying and alisa not being told and its been 5 years and she still doesn't know, but she will soon and this whole life she'd built for herself around the fact her brothers dead is going to come crashing down and she's, for all thats its worth, only just an adult.
comic!wanda and pietro
they were so close and pietro fucked it up (admittedly because of bad writing) and now its still not been fixed because, how do you fix something like that, and wanda not wanting to see pietro, but also still caring for him. and pietro caring for wanda but not knowing how to properly.
movie!natasha and yelena
natasha knowing something yelena doesn't when they're young only for yelena to become more familiar with it than natasha ever was. and for them to reconnect years later only for natasha to die before they ever got a real chance to know each other again.
scarlet and ivy grey
ivy being compared to scarlet her whole life and eventually having to become her on a level that is just Wrong and when scarlet comes back neither of them are quite Right and it creates this rift that scarlet doesn't know how to cross and ivy doesn't know if she wants to cross and finding out that they're in the same situation but they also aren't and maybe they're not the same people anymore but distorted reflection's (yes thats a mirror reference for the people who've read the books) which should be a good thing but ivy doesn't know how to be anything else except scarlets shadow and scarlet doesn't know how to do anything else except be everything ivy wasn't. (do i care that this is a childrens series? no. so much fucked up shit happens that ive earned the right to analyze their dynamic)
The Tournament of X
Fun Fact!
Despite Wanda Maximoff, AKA the Scarlet Witch, having her history retconned to erase her mutanthood, Billy Kaplan-Altman and Tommy Shepherd, AKA Wiccan and Speed, have yet to be de-confirmed as mutants!
As such, they are eligible to compete in the Tournament of X, even though Wanda and her brother Pietro, AKA Quicksilver, are not!
What are your thoughts on the idea of tommy officially adopting the name maximoff? Obviously it’s a very different case for billy but tommy doesn’t seem to have a close relationship with the Shepards and the name doesn’t have a cultural significance to him either. Do you think that could be an exciting move for his character or do you reckon it’s unnecessary
I'm of two minds. On the one hand, I think that this type of name-change can create unnecessary confusion, especially when there are multiple versions of a character that need to be distinguished. I'm also reluctant to create further imbalances or discrepancies between Tommy and Billy. Moreover, my initial instinct is to say that actually demonstrating a positive relationship between Wanda and her sons is more important than what either Tommy or Billy call themselves--and, much like my opinion on Magneto and the Maximoffs [x], I think we do a disservice to these characters when we shy away from the challenging parts of their complicated family dynamic. Billy and Tommy's disjointed upbringing, as well as the sometimes imperfect process of reunification and reclamation, are vital parts of their narrative. That's a specific, unique part of the Romani identity they represent, and I want to lean into that complexity, not smooth it over.
On the other hand, you're correct that Tommy does not have any relationship with the Shepherds and has no need to keep their name. Billy and Tommy both stand to gain a lot from developing their relationship with Wanda, but where Billy would be mostly exploring the nature of his powers and how that fits into his Romani heritage, Tommy is the one who could really expand on his feelings about family and belonging, and potentially, how that fits into his Romani heritage as well.
As I've said in the past, I find that the preservation of identity and lineage, in spite of our history of forced assimilation, displacement, and family separation, is a very important subject for many Romani people. That's why I think it's so important to consider Wanda's relationship with her sons in the context of racial and cultural identity. As "Maximoff" is, in this context, an ethnic name, having Tommy adopt that name would be a really meaningful gesture, and hopefull dispel any doubts among the fans that he and his brother are Roma.
Tumblr media
The most recent Hulkling & Wiccan comic on Marvel Unlimited made it clear that Wanda views all her children-- including her son-in-law-- as Maximoffs. I thought that was really beautiful, and I would really like to see more indications that Billy and Tommy are, explicitly, part of this family, regardless of their surnames. I used to think maybe writers should just start giving them double or hyphenated surnames, but now that Billy's married it might be a little awkward. William Maximoff-Kaplan-Altman is kinda too much.
Hi! Idk if you're still taking scarletsilver/maxicest asks but I'll just shoot my shot I guess.
Idk if I'm alone in this or not but one of my biggest maxicest headcanons is that if Wanda didn't magically create her twin babies... she still would have had them... with Pietro. (Ya know what I mean).
I know, I know, I know. There's plenty of reasons why it sounds illogical. BUT! I feel like if Wanda never loved Vision (or just said "frick it" and just elopes with her brother) or if she really really REALLY wanted to have babies (the 'traditional' way) and asked Pietro... you know that man is 1000% gonna go with whatever his beloved sister wants whether he likes it or not.
Another reason why is because I want them to raise my boys Thomas/Tommy and William/Billy. Especially our lil speed. Baby boy deserves all the nice things. We already see how Wanda interacts with her boys as their mother-not-mother. But imagine if Pietro was their actual dad and how he would interact with the boys?? So many possibilitiessss
And if Wanda and Pietro did raise them, they would also train/mentor Billy and Tommy with their powers early on which would probably make them more powerful or at least more in control in their powers.
Anyways, sorry for the rant! Just wanna know what you'd think of this headcanon of mine and anything you'd like to add really! :)))
I'm never not taking asks, thanks for sending this!
i love having them all as a family. for tommy especially. the kaplans are good parents, but tommy never got to have that and that sucks because wanda loved him so much the whole time and ughh they could have been happy. i would love more wanda and tommy stuff in canon or otherwise. but i also love pietro being more a part of tommys life. not sure if pietro is more competitive or concilliatory with him? bit of both probably. seeing himself in tommy and whether that creates friction or pride or pity.
like in 616 i feel like they have major old cat vs new hyperactive kitten energy and idk if that would be the same if pietro helped raise him from birth but i do love it. pietro's slightly put-on long suffering exasperation and tommy's overwhelming need to annoy this one guy in particular but underneath pietro's really fond of him and tommy's looking for attention and for someone to appreciate him and care that he exists. but they should also get to have stupid fun at high speeds (and together cause i imagine its usually pretty isolating).
in 616 i go with the headcanon that billy and tommy are pietros genetically, like wanda made them as if they were his, but it was still done magically and he just had to see it from afar. theyre the children she always imagined having, the ones she really wanted. so i have no qualms about just making them fully biologically his in AUs, its the way the rebirths and subsequent life experiences affect their personalities that i have to work around.
im working on (slowly) a 616 post childrens crusade fic where the two of them sort of readopt tommy. and they form this kind of nuclear family but dont talk to each other about it really because theyre all afraid the others will reject it. 100% happy ending they get the family they were supposed to have eventually.
also something i probably wont write but have as an idea. a very lighthearted fox xmen au where billy and tommy exist and theyre like 12-14 and pietro (peter i guess) has to keep juggling his job of Saving the World(tm) with dealing with whatever bullshit the boys have done. like the phoenix force is out of control and we need to do something to stop jean from destroying the world, but billy really wanted to see a dinosaur and now theres a time rift in the garden and pietro cannot let his coworkers find out about his children and their godlike powers, so he's bouncing between some really deep placatory conversation with jean and trying to find enough cages to put all the velociraptors in before wanda gets home and finds the house in a mess.
I say this every so often but. I want a book focused on the more mundane details of Teddy's court after Empyre.
No intergalactic war, no huge world ending threats... just a dude who was raised on Earth trying to introduce reforms re: the whole empire thing and trying to live up to his title as The King of Space/The Great Uniter, and the smaller political shenanigans his court has to deal with as they settle into a working relationship both within the empire and with other (interstellar/intergalactic) parties in general
like, iirc Mur-G'nn was the court mage before Billy took over when he married Teddy—I think she's fine with him being court mage (he's a stronger mage and also the Emperor's consort), but I'd love to see more about how they work together in neutralizing magical threats against the kingdom, or just bonding/interacting in general. (Also, with the role of prophecy in Mur-G'nn's life, and with Billy being a reality warper and having a destiny himself (demiurge stuff), i think a discussion about the concept of fate could be interesting? idk if they ever talked about that in canon but it'd be cool)
I'd also kill for Teddy having cultural advisors, since he was raised on earth and wasn't schooled in space politics; he might know the Kree-Skrull stuff, but might not have as firm a grasp on Kree and Skrull historical interactions with other planets/cultures. It's touched upon here and there from what I've seen, but I'd love a dedicated arc about war crime tribunals and transitional justice, given the bloody history of both the Kree and Skrull empires. (also... I get Teddy being the Kree-Skrull emperor, but the King of Space thing never really made sense to me—i know those two cultures pretty much have the biggest influence and power in space, but being king of Krees and Skrulls doesn't equate to being king of all space???)
Also. It'd be sooo much fun to see Billy "I never had a problem with being different, it's other people who had problems with me" Kaplan-Altman throw slimy dignitaries for a loop. Or alien diplomats trying to get into the good graces of the Kaplans (especially if Billy's younger brothers are like. Still a thing), and/or Tommy (and Maximoffs) being roped into state functions..... A one-shot about Kree and Skrulls who were off-planet for a long time like Xavin and Noh-Varr figuring out citizenship bureaucracy bullshit under the new empire would be kinda fun too ngl
just like, idk. the mundane day to day activities of the court like policy debates and appointing ministers, which can build up to a bigger conflict and flashy fights as a treat
Round Two
The Fey family (Ace Attorney) VS the Lehnsherr-Maximoff+ Family (Marvel)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The Fey family
Members: Mia Fey, Maya Fey, Misty Fey, Pearl Fey, Morgan Fey, Dahlia Hawthorne, Iris Hawthorne
Propaganda:
"The Feys are spirit mediums and leadership is hereditary; Maya is next in line and Morgan has tried to Get Rid of her twice (once by framing her for murder and another by actually murdering her), in order to make Pearl the new leader instead. Pearl is 8. Misty disappeared almost twenty years ago and left behind two kids, she was assumed dead but was actually living a fine life and awkwardly spying on her kids, one of whom did not recognize her when they came face to face for once. Mia abandoned the family in search of Misty and was murdered before ever finding her. Dahlia and Iris are Morgan’s kids from another marriage, and Dahlia was part of Morgan’s plans to murder Maya, while Iris… tried to prevent it but in a very ineffective way that ultimately ended with Misty getting murdered instead. It’s noteworthy that near the end of these games Maya says she wants absolutely nothing to do with the Fey clan anymore" More propaganda here
Lehnsherr-Maximoff+ Family
Members: Erik lehnsherr, Magda lehnsherr, Wanda Maximoff, Pietro Maximoff, Tommy Sheppard, Billy Kaplan, Vision, Max Eisenhardt, Crystal, Luna Maximoff, Lorna Dane, Teddy Altman
Propaganda:
"wanda married a robot and changed reality and invented two children (tommy and billy) who then died(?) and their souls were transferred into two random pregnant womens unborn childrens bodies(??). most people in this family have killed multiple people and - except for luna - theyve all been labeled criminals at some point. wandas dad (who she didnt know was her dad until he revealed it to her darth-vader style), max/erik/magnus/magneto, is an international terrorist and is wanted by every government in the country. wandas twin brother, pietro is bad at parenting (but not as bad as magnets). also wandas half sister lorna is there and she tried to kill pietro once. magneto also tried to kill pietro. actually lots of people have tried to kill pietro. he is hated by many. anyway those two children, tommy and billy? they had a sort of normal life until they met and realised, as near-identical twins, they looked the exact same and then they realised wanda was their mum which was Bad because this was after wanda had killed lots of people and was a murderer. billys boyfriend teddy is just there. he doesnt really know whats going on but is afraid of every single maximoff." Hunger Games AU for Marvel Champions: Reaping of District Seven
"Let's see here, for the boy's tribute we have..." The escort turned to swish their hand into the ball, looking for a piece of paper to grab.
Thousands of starved eyes watched, hoping, praying, for their slips to be missed.
"Don't worry about that." A bored, disinterested voice cut through the crowd. A pale hand raised over the heads of the eighteen year olds, connected to a boy at the very head of the group, "I volunteer as Tribute."
"And you are...?" The escort straightened their glasses.
The boy extricated himself from the line, smirking at the camera lightly, "Tommy Shepherd. Turning nineteen next month."
The escort's mouth fell open, and all attention turned to the current year's Mentor. One Billy Kaplan, who had a stormy expression on his face.
"Yeah, I'm the estranged twin!" Tommy confirmed, noticing that everyone had seen the distinct similarities between them, "Couldn't let Brother Dearest take all the credit, could I?"
---
He waited until they were inside the Justice Hall to begin his tirade. Tommy was grateful for that much at least.
"What are you thinking?" Billy screamed, and not for the first time.
Tommy didn't even bother keeping up the facade, "I caught the District Five reaping right before ours started." He explained, trying to keep his voice steady, "Billy, Viv's on the chopping block."
"...who?"
"Our sister."
"The robot one? Isn't she two? And a robot??"
"Her internal programming makes her sixteen. I've been using some of my contact hours to keep up with her and our father. Figured you'd do the same, given how much you love our little family." That wasn't meant to be read as sarcastic. Billy was genuinely ecstatic about his soul relatives, to the point where it got a little terrifying.
No one should be that happy to know their soul mother was the reason the Hunger Games existed.
"She's a good kid." Tommy told him, "I'll wipe out the competition for her and set her up for the win. Because she's two years old and deserves to die in these stupid games less than anyone."
"You're not even trying to come back?" Billy asked, on the brink of tears again.
"Don't worry, you've still got your real brothers." Tommy tried to console him. It didn't help.
"Fuck." Billy said, wiping at his eyes furiously, "You're so fucking stupid, but fine. Don't expect me to let you walk into that arena unprepared."
Tommy didn't doubt it for a second. With Billy working the Kaplan Charm, he was guaranteed dozens of Sponsors before the Games even began.
[Okay so Tommy isn't technically a Champions member. But there's a member in their reserves roster whose hero name starts with S that we never know the full name of and I've decided that that is Speed. Esp since Prodigy (Speed's bf and fellow young avenger) is mentioned in the same sentence. And the reserves recruitment was done on The Forums and out of the very few listed users, he's one. It all makes sense. No I'm not milking it for angst I'm sadder than all you for this.
So the First Rebellion in this one was kicked off by Wanda doing House of M, or at least that was a major part of it. Billy and Tommy say that they're twins separated at birth to hide the reincarnated-sons-of-scarlet-witch secret that would def get them killed.
Also a lot of the Mentors are going to be Young Avengers. It's going to be a whole thing.]
