Thanks to the anonymous new Key West resident who called to report this Black Scoter down with a wing injury at Cow Key Channel Bridge. Thanks to Lazy Dog for making the rescue and transferring the patient into our care. The wing has been treated in our clinic.

The Black Scoter is a sea duck, which means it spends much of its time in ocean waters, and can be found in the winter along both the Pacific and Atlantic coasts. This does not, however, mean that they avoid freshwater entirely. They often make their nests near freshwater, and some birds even winter on the Great Lakes.
The Wood Duck is well known for its striking and unique appearance. Males have an iridescent green head with a crest while females have a greyish brown head with a white eye ring. Wood ducks nest in tree cavities and have sharp claws that allow them to perch on branches.

Looking back on five of my favourite ever birdwatching days
Seeing the Surf Scoter at Stokes Bay in 2015
Seeing Pennington’s female Surf Scoter on Sunday inspired this post which was brilliant too, and this 2015 sighting of this mega bird has always stuck with me. A wonderful and thrilling moment, with the Common Scoters it was with and only my second ever Red-throated Diver seen other highlights in a day we saw so much. A long time Twitter friend of mine joked when I was sharing my sightings that night “did a Hoopoe fly by as well?”, clearly a good luck charm as that iconic species was the next new bird we saw later that year. I took the first picture in this photoset of the Surf Scoter and Common Scoters.
Great Spotted Cuckoo at Portland in 2016
2016 feels like the beginning of a few amazing birding years for us with so much seen and high year list totals at a bit of an increasing intensity and in hindsight this super bird at Portland was the key bird seen that year, when it looked like this rarity may have eluded us on that sunny afternoon it suddenly dashed over the path right beside us and we got a sensational view of a special species in a smashing wild bank holiday Sunday. I got the record shot in the second picture in this photoset of it.
The first day of the Scotland trip we went on in 2018, in the Highlands
On this sensational part of the amazing Heatherlea ‘Birding Bites’ tour a present for my 21st birthday I had one of the best days of my life, with dream after dream coming true in the snow covered landscape as I saw my first ever Red Grouse, Crested Tit, Capercaillie, Golden Eagle and Black Grouse as well as White-tailed Eagle, Dipper, my first ever Mountain Hare and also Red Squirrels and Red Deer seen in the way of mammals and more. Magical moments in an enchanting trip with wildlife and scenes to savour I always longed to see. I took the third and fourth pictures in this photoset of Crested Tits, fifth of Golden Eagle and sixth of the Black Grouse that day.
Seeing Lesser Spotted Woodpecker and Tawny Owl on one afternoon in 2021 in the New Forest
Being two birds I dreamed of seeing for years and first saw in the same year back in 2014, this was a utopian day at a place I love when we thrillingly saw a Tawny Owl flying in the day and were ecstatic to see a Lesser Spotted Woodpecker weaving through the branches. Hawfinch, Woodlark, Stock Dove, Treecreeper, Reed Bunting and Fallow Deer were other highlights in an unbelievable list of species seen that day. This massive moment seeing them both together has sparked a good couple of years of seeing the owl and woodpecker a bit more frequently too. I got the seventh picture in this photoset of the Lesser Spotted Woodpecker that day.
Seeing an Osprey fly over Skomer Island whilst enjoying Puffins in 2022
My 2022′s answer to the Lesser Spotted Woodpecker/Tawny Owl moment which I have also replayed so much in my mind, I was so amazed when whilst watching the original birds I took to my heart getting into birding as a kid the seabirds and taking in all the splendour of this with Puffins ensconced in sea campion the other bird I first loved as a kid an Osprey flew over. I never imagined seeing Puffin and the other seabirds and Osprey in the same day so this was also one of the days of my life and was an inspirational personal moment for me in a year of changing things for the better last year. The crazy few minutes in a packed, momentous and sensational day also included other of my favourite birds Red Kite and Chough flying over. I took the eighth picture in this photoset of the Osprey and ninth of a Puffin that day and tenth of a Chough later that week away at Strumble Head.

Empty cabin
Luke Castellan x Aphrodite!Reader
WARNINGS: not established relations, Smut, oral (r receiving), grover walking in on them.
————————————————————————
It all started with a few looks across the campfire, looks turned into smiles, smiles turned into following like into an empty cabin.
All the campers of the cabin are at the nightly campfire and you and Luke, we’ll you guys are making out on a random bed of a cabin number you forgot a while ago.
Your on his lap kissing him willingly and his hands are creeping under your shirt getting closer and closer to your chest,
You guys finally part from each others faces and when you do, you just look at each other and smile, it made you happy to know you long time crush since you were 15 liked you back.
It was relieving to finally be in his arm, in a swift motion you were on your back on the bed and Luke was giving you kisses on your stomach and making his way down,
as he’s getting closer to you heat he begins to in button your Jean shorts that fit you so well, and finally zipping them down he drags them off you and stares in awe at your lacy panties,
“wore these just f’me?” He says with a cocky smile and a raspy voice.
You start to feel your face heat up, the truth is, you did wear them for him, you weren’t sure if you were gonna end up doing this with him but you did, just in case ;)
he eventually dives in between your carefully taking of your panties and when he does, he goes to town.
Your a moaning mess, tugging at his curly black hair and anything else around you.
As you tug at his hair, his finger nails tigging into the skin of you thighs and the rugs of his hair makes him groan in pleasure.
Soon enough you feel a knot on your stomach, “fuck..yes Right there!” You say desperately basically whispering it to yourself but Luke still heard,
“OH MY GODS” you hear, it was Grover… you both scoter apart from each other and you grab the sheets attempting to cover yourself
“UHM ILL JUST GO IM SO SO SORRY” he says as he rushes out as he’s covering his eyes,
“I-I should go I’ll see you later?” You say rushing to put on your clothes,
as you turn to look at Luke he’s slightly smirking “definitely” he says and kissed you goodbye as your basically running out the room trying to explain the situation to Grover.
————————————————————————
THATS ITTTT please don’t be afraid to give me request I need ideas 🙏🏾🙏🏾

note: images on the left are Black Scoters, images on the right are Harlequin Ducks. If in doubt, check the alt text!
The Harlequin Duck is found along rocky coasts in Canada, the northern United States, and Greenland. On top of the male’s distinctive patterning, both sexes can be identified by the white spots present on both sides of the head, towards the back. The male makes a high-pitched squeaking call, and is therefore sometimes referred to as a “sea mouse”.

Days 0-1 of family vacation
So far things are going reasonably well, despite a lack of sleep.
Day 0
Yesterday, I took dance class in the morning, then rushed home to finish packing and getting organised for the trip. We were aiming to leave by 1:30, which didn't happen, but we loaded up the car and left around 2pm. I drove the whole way to the vacation rental (south of Santa Cruz), without stopping for a break until we had nearly arrived. I was proud of myself for driving on the freeway (which I usually avoid), including a winding mountain highway and, in some areas, heavy traffic.
We were the first to arrive, around 4:30 or so, but my brother's family arrived a few minutes after we opened the door. They had the right priorities: they immediately walked across the street and up the stairs to the top of the dune to look at the sun setting over Monterey Bay! We joined them, of course. My parents and uncle arrived just after sunset.
We chose bedrooms, had Thai food delivered for dinner, and then played Isle of Cats, a very complex (at least for a beginner!) game involving polyomino cats. Fun! But that meant I was up until 2am. oops.
Wildlife: a coyote just before sunset as we were arriving.
Day 1
Unfortunately, I woke up around 7:20 and it took a while to doze off again, so I'm not super well-rested. But I got up around 9:15; my dad was the only one up. Around 11:30, when a few other people had gotten up, he and I went across the street and over the dune to the beach to look at birds. My dad got hungry after a bit and went home for lunch, but I took a longer bird walk along the beach and a river mouth (about an hour and a half) and saw a lot of birds, including what I believe were my first ever snowy plovers! (I'm pretty sure. Is that possible, @lies? There were about 45 of them. Many were sitting in little indentations in the sand. They're so cute!) I also saw an osprey, a black phoebe, a great blue heron, lots of sanderlings and willets, several long-billed curlews, a couple semi-palmated plovers, a western grebe, a couple of marbled godwits, buffleheads, surf scoters, some unidentified cormorants and gulls, and at least 500 brown pelicans (mostly at the mouth of the river or a little upstream)! There were also four turkey vultures eating a dead marine mammal, and I saw the (at least partially) decomposed carcass of what might have once been a dolphin.
On my way back, I ran into my brother and his family, followed by Wife, so I told them where to find the pelicans! In the later afternoon, after some discussion about food planning, Wife, my mother and I drove into town to the health food store. (Such a trip is part of every vacation for Wife and me.) In the evening, we had pizza delivered and then played So Clover, a cooperative word game in which each person has to clue 4 pairs of random words (the clue for each pair is a single word) on cards arranged in a square, and then they shuffle the cards and add another, and everyone else has to use the clues to reconstruct the correct arrangement of words. There was much hilarity!
So far, everyone is getting along pretty well!
