Luzon Bleeding-Heart Dove (Gallicolumba luzonica)
Family: Pigeon and Dove Family (Columbidae)
IUCN Conservation Status: Near Threatened
Found only on the island of Luzon (the largest island in the Philippines Archipelago) the Luzon Bleeding-Heart Dove is one of several species of “bleeding-heart doves”, so named for the unusual bright-red patches on their chests which bare an uncanny resemblance to a bloody wound (complete with paler red markings surrounding the vivid red center, making the feathers appear blood-stained.) These bright red markings are present in both females and males, and while their exact purpose is the subject of extensive debate it is generally assumed that they are related to sexual selection; males typically have larger, redder “wounds” than females, and during courtship they produce loud, hooting calls, puff out their chests and “bare their hearts” to potential mates, with females seemingly preferring males with louder calls, bigger chests and redder markings. Rarely encountered in the wild due to their extreme timidity and near-total silence outside of courtship, Luzon Bleeding-Heart Doves inhabit lowland forests and are unusual among pigeons in that they are largely terrestrial, foraging for fruits, seeds, insects and worms on the forest floor during the day and taking flight only at night to reach safe roosting sites in the branches of trees - even when threatened by potential predators (such as monitor lizards and birds-of-prey) they are more likely to flee into dense vegetation than to fly away, despite being fully capable of doing so. After forming a bond members of this species typically remain together for life, foraging and roosting in pairs and working together to defend their nest and raise their young; Luzon Bleeding-Heart Doves are believed to nest in trees towards the end of Luzon’s dry season (during the early-to-mid may), with females laying 1-2 pale white eggs which both parents incubate (with males typically sitting on their nest during the day and females sitting on it overnight.) Young Luzon Bleeding-Heart Doves hatch after around 16 days of incubation, fledge when around 2-3 months old and are mature enough to find partners of their own after roughly 18 months.

COORIER (Flying/Psychic) - The Messenger Pokemon
Decided to finish this one for Valentine's Day, but got it ready too early so I decided to post it anyways, maybe I will make something new for Valentine.
COORIER is based on the Luzon Bleeding-Heart (Gallicolumba luzonica) mixed with a Mailman/Delivery Courier
It has the ability Overcoat as a reference to the phrase “Neither snow nor rain nor heat nor gloom of night stays these couriers from the swift completion of their appointed rounds” often associated with the postal office

Animal of the Day!
Mindoro Bleeding-heart (Gallicolumba platenae)
Tumblr media
(Photo from Animalia Bio)
Conservation Status- Critically Endangered
Habitat- Philippines
Size (Weight/Length)- 200 g; 30 cm
Diet- Fruits; Seeds; Insects
Cool Facts- This bird is completely fine, that’s just their measure of horniness. I’m not joking. During the breeding season, males puff out their chest and strut their stuff for females. The brighter the red, the more fit the male. Mindoro bleeding-hearts live in small flocks alongside green pigeons as they forage for fruit. Unfortunately, these doves are under extreme threat from illegal logging and dynamite-blasting for marble. An estimated 50-250 adults survive. Conservation groups are working to map the forests of Mindoro and do an in depth population survey. There are future hopes for a captive breeding program to bring these birds back from the brink. In addition, they are working with local people to plant native trees to replace areas that were previously logged.
Rating- 13/10 (As a wise man once said “Shot through the heart and you’re to blame…”)

Luzon Bleeding Heart
Don't worry, this guy isn't actually bleeding out. Thats just his plumage! They endemic to the island of Luzon in the Philippines. In Tagalog, their name is Punay, and they aren't the only kind of dove with this feature. Other birds in the same genus, called Gallicolumba which means "bleeding-hearts" also have this feature. But, the Luzon Bleeding Heart's spot is the brightest of the bunch. Learn More!
Barn Owl
With such a beautiful face, its no wonder people love the barn owl. It is one of the best hunters when it comes to relying solely on sound, using its wonderfully shaped face to pinpoint its prey's exact location. Its spread out all over the world, being one of the most widely distributed birds in the whole world. However, in a lot of cultures the barn owl is feared. Learn More!

day 19
today's bird is the luzon bleeding-heart!
- the courtship display of the luzon bleeding-heart involves the male showing the female his "heart" (cute!)
- if their young don't develop their adult plumage in time, the parents will attack and sometimes kill them 😨
- when incubating their eggs, the male takes the day shift and the female takes the night shift

COORIER (Flying/Psychic) The messenger pokemon
This distant relative of PIDOVES is used to deliver letters and love messages by many. They use their psychic powers to read peoples hearts and track their loved ones, always finding the recipient of their letters without fail.
They can be equiped with a special Item called "Lovey-Dovey Satchel" used to store letters and other presents.
They know moves like Heart Stamp and Present, and their signature move is "Love Message", a psychic-type move that does double damage if the target is infatuated. If equiped with its satchel, it will show him throwing heart-stamped letters 💌 if not, they will be heart shaped projectiles
It has the ability Overcoat to protect itself from weather effects as a reference to the phrase "Neither snow nor rain nor heat nor gloom of night stays these couriers from the swift completion of their appointed rounds" often associated with the postal office
